STATEHOOD FOR NEW MEXICO

In His Message to Congress President RooseveltRecommends the Immediate Admission of NewMexico and Arizona as States of the Union.

That great progress has been made to-

ward the desired goal by the agitation forstatehood for New Mexico is shown by thefollowing paragraph from President Roose-velt's message to congress, read at the as-sembling of that body the first of the week:

"I advocate the immediate admission ofof New Mexico and Arizona as states. Thisshould be done at the present session of con-gress. The people of the two territories havemade it evident by their votes that they willnot come in as one state. The only alterna-tive is to admit them as two, and I trust thatthis will be done without delay."

Ali. the numerous dispatchesfrom Washington this week in-

dicate a sentiment in high placesthere very favorable to the im-

mediate granting of statehood toNew Mexico. Delegate An-

drews, Governor Curry, and com-

mitteeman Luna are in the capi-

tal city working hard to fulfillthe promise they made to thevoters at home during the recentcampaign. There are the bestof reasons to believe that theywill succeed. If they do, NewMexico will be theirs on their re-

turn home. If they lo notwell, to their own sense of fail-

ure and a general sense of disap-

pointment may be added somepolitical consequences not pleas-

ant to contemplate.

Tiikki-- : was a sudden andunannounced exodus of undesira-ble citizens from Socorro Mondaymorning. They went by train, they went by private conveyance, they went on horseback, theywent on foot, they went by themeans and in the direction thatpromised to place them most ex-

peditiously beyond the call of thegrand jury about to assemble.District Attorney Wolford was intown and had determined to ridthe city of the motley gang bybringing every mother's son anddaughter of them before thegrand jury. He must havesixjken his determination loudenough for them to hear, for themajority of them took to theirliteral or metaphorical heels andthus saved the county the ex-

pense of their arrest and prose-cution. Tally one for Mr. Wol-

ford.

Congkkss has been in sessionthis week, and one of the mostimportant pieces of legislationnow proposed is that of revisingthe present tariff law. This isgoing to be a delicate and diff-icult task, for the general under-standing is that the presentrates of import duty are to Ije

revised downward, while longexperience has shown that it ismuch easier to revise those ratesof duty upward. For instance, how would a proposal to reducethe rates of duty on wool andhides le received in New Mexico? No doubt the people of this ter-

ritory would ston be praying tobe spared the catastrophe withas much zeal as the people ofthV zinc producing districts ofdemocratic Missouri are now exhibiting in appointing a day ofprayer on which to importunethe Almighty for a republicanduty on their principal product.Hut the republican party is to becredited with the tariff legislation under which the countryhas made its recent stupendousprogress, and that party may besafely trusted now even to sur-pass its former wisdom.

AN ELOQUENT TBIBUTE.

Col. IIknky Wattkkson, thegreatly talented editor of theLouisville Courier-Journa- l, is nothappy over the result of the lateelection. In fact. Colonel Wat-ter&o- n

takes an exceedinglygloomy view of the future of con

stitutional liberty in this blessedland of ours, all because thevoters have entrenched the re-

publican party in power morestrongly than ever before. "Itcan never be driven out short ofits own dissolution, or some direcataclysm bringing ruin in itstrain," says the sorely disap-pointed colonel, though he con-

cedes that the constitution of theUnited States is not abolishedyet and that this is one of thefew things that are still worthfighting for.

Hut, no matter whether heshares the colonel's dire forebod-ings or not, the reader of one ofhis recent brilliant editorial!must concede that Colonel Wat-terso- n

achieved a triumph in elo-

quence of tribute when he wrote,"Nothing could surpass, as noth-ing has ever equaled, the personal canvass of Mr. Hryan;its wondrous lucidity and powerof statement; its splendid intel-lectual and physical endurance;its unanswerable argument.Nor did Ignatiusof Loyola sweepthrough a world of incarnateevil bearing the cross of Jesus totriumph with greater force of in-

spiration and truth than did theheroic son of Nebraska traversea land gaping with curiosity, buttoo busy over its work and playto consider any danger to theimmortal soul of its constitution-al fabric."

Marked for Death."Three years ago I was marked

for death. A grave-yar- d coughwas tearing my lungs to pieces.Doctors failed to help me and hopehad fled, when my husband gotDr. King's New Discovery," saysMrs. A. C. Williams, of Bac, Ky."The first dose helped me andimprovement kept on until I hadgained 5S pounds in weight andmy health was fully restored."This medicine holds the world'shealing record for coughs andcolds and lung and throat diseases. It prevents pneumonia. Soldunder guarantee at all druggists,50c and $1.00. Trial bottle free.

A Discomfiting Witneaa. The following colloquy took

place between Councilor Sealingwax and a witness who "wouldtalk back:" "You say, sir, theprisoner is a thief?" "Yes, sir.'Cause why, she has confessedshe was." "And vou also swearshe worked for you after thisconfession?" "Yes, sir." "Thenwe are to understand that youemploy dishonest people to workfor you, even after their rascali-ties are known?" "Of course. How else would I get assistancefrom a lawyer?"

Medicine That la Medicine.

"I have suffered a good dealwith malaria and stomach com-

plaints, but I have now founda remedy that keeps me well, and that remedy is Electric Bit-

ters: a medicine that is medicinefor stomach and liver troubles, and for run down conditions,"says W. C. Kiestler, of Halliday,Ark. DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO DIE

Wk Son Other JUmarkableThing Happen, According to

Atlanta Coaetitutlon.

A democratic exchange reproduces the following democraticclassic, which first appeared inthe Atlanta Constitution severalyears ago. Dedicate the production to the time when the democratic party will win instead ofwhen that party will die and itwill have the heartv endorsementof all good republicans. Here itis:

When the lion eats grass likethe ox, and the fish worm swal-lows the whale; when the terrapin knits woolen sox, and thebear is out run by the snail.

When serpents walk uprightlike men, and tumble bugs travellike dogs; when grasshoppersfeed on the hen, and feathers aretound on the hogs.

When Thomas cats swim inthe air, and elephants root upthe trees; when insects in sum-mer are rare and snuff nevermakes people sneeze.

When fish creep over dry land, and mules on bicycles ride; whenfoxes lay eggs in the sand, andwomen in dress take no pride.

When Dutchmen no longerdrink beer, and girls get topreaching on time; when billygoats butt from the rear, andtreason's no longer a crime.

When the humming bird brayslike the ass, and limburger smellslike cologne; when plow sharesare made out of glass, and thehearts of Missourians are ttone.

When ideas grow in gold-bug- s'

heads, and wool on the hydraulicram; then the democratic partywill be dead and the countrywon't be worth a d n.

"The Law."Parents of Wayne, a suburb of

Philadelphia, are required to re-

port promptly any case of con-

tagious disease, in compliancewith the regulations of the localboard of health.

In accordance with this order,Health Officer Leary receivedthis post card recently:

"Dear sir: This is to notifyyou that my boy Ephriam isdown bad with the measles as required by the new law."

A Dangerous Operation

is the remaval of the appendixby a surgeon. No one who takesDr. Ling's New Life Pills is eversubject to this frightful ordeal. They work so quietly you don'tfeel them. They cure constipation, headache, biliousness andmalaria. 25c at all druggists.

Fairy TaleOn the third finger of her left

hand the sweet young thing worea magnificent solitaire.

"So you're going to marry aprince, are you?" said the necessary questioner.

"A prince? I don't understand."

"The son of a coal king.""Oh, yes," smiled the sweet

young thing. "I'm to be hisCinder Ella."

A YOUNG BOY WAS KIDNAPPED

Tisd Hand and Foot He Made IliaEscape During the Might and

Returned home.

The following account of a re-

markable case of kidnapping istaken from a recent issue of theSierra County Advocate:

"A kidnapping episode was re-

ported here Wednesday evening.According to the story as told bythe nine year old son of (1. J.Helton, who has a goat ranch onthe Seco, being the victim. Itseems that on Tuesday, eveningas young Helton and a )oungcrsister were bringing their flockof goats home, the boy was sud-

denly confronted by a man witha pair of revolvers and his faceblackened, the man threw a gunin his face and told him if hemade a noise he would kill him.The man with the gun and blackpiloted the boy to the Colemancabin on the Animas, tied himhand and foot, put him in thecabin and barricaded the dooranil left. Some time during thenight the boy succeeded in re-

leasing the bands that held himand escaped through the roof inthe morning and returned home.At the time the boy was captur-ed the sister was some distancefrom her brother and did notwitness the abduction. A searchwas made for tin; boy withoutavail, and his safe return wasgladly heralded the next morn-ing. The next morning Mr.Helton started in search of thekidnapoer, and while travelingalong he saw a strange man highup on the mountain side. Mr.Helton immediately prepared forwar, but before he could get hisartillery into action, the strangeman retired behind the rocks anddisappeared. So far the matteris a mvsterv yet to be solved.Joe Badger, whose camp is nearHelton's left yesterday morningwith an invoice of new rifles andammunition and the man withthe black face and ivory handledrevolvers had best make himselfscarce about the Helton camp."
