The pipesthe impure bodyfeet mangled fingersshoul'nt deserveto play but do so well
The key is the feelingbehindbecause only measured airfills the cylinderedsoundand pressing harderwon't matter
But pressuredscreamingmatters
THE PIPES

and I pushbelieving thatdoing so makes pipeslike Marshall stacksinform the worldof my powerself-indulged or noI cannot careeven thougha discerning earwill hear accosted lossI lose controlwhen I play
Ohow I wishI wishedfor atonement then maybeBachwould forgive memy irreverent trespassesinto the voidthat blesses methe pipes that envelop methe melodiesthat dictate me
Transmutation thencracker to boneblood to bodied life Take the cupTake the sacrament
Pushthe bless-ed airinto adjacent pipesanddissonantlyrejoicefor all is wellthough nonechurched will ever agree
This all reminds meof what happenedof what happenswhen light meetsbodied awarenesswhen compassioned eyesmeet and their rivers flowand mingleanguish withpurityloss withdesire to hold happinessin unsure waters
To the unforgiving heartLet air reign

There I was bornThere I was dad photographedjaybird naked babyon the sofaSome years laterthere I was belted Ignorant babysitterfound me down by the creekacross from the brand new mini-golf parkEven my own ma never did suchShe figured I was the perfect childno wailingno bawlingmaybe even no shit diapers
But this sitter thought I must be breakingsome law to be down at the creeksearching for watersearching for soundsearching for warminconsequential lightupon mudcrawdadsor frogsor the bugs they leave behind
Frogs? When it rains in Enidthey do come outand it's not unusual to seetheir flattened bodiesin the day-after streetsPoor thingsPoor fat tire victimseyes wide open and dried in the nightand only an imaginary soundbut impressive nonethelessto a sponge-minded boy
just wanderinglooking for a magic Peter Pan place to land like a Tinkerbelland believe that things will be better than a fridge cardboard boxShitWhat is this?
What used to be fun is survival nowand I see the stars in the Memphis nightand remember when some caring relative told me oncethat things aren't always what they seemto beDon't worry, see
You'll be all rightYour ma means wellShe's not too smartbut will surprise youwhen you least expectShe'll be walking awayone dayand you'll seethe beauty in it allShe is not greatbut played the cardsshe got and planted the poton you and your siblingsTheyresponded in their waycleared the limbo barand if you askthey will sayOKwe made itbut not without scars

Well, my heart is a whiskey barrelWooden through and through But gentle as a bearmama with cubLook now she sucklesthe precious progeny
My heart is softened with morning dewIf you are fortunate enough to seeyou will seeit's trueThe heart is indeed capableof amazing somethingness
Mother was a bearShe loved her children wellGoldilocks will tellHer head had every hair
FAIRY TALE

Take your cares to the lone prairieThat's where you'll find tranquilityAsk your fathers, they will sayThis is the only way
Cast your cares on the lone prairieThat's where you'll find reason to beAsk your fathers, they will sayThis is the only way
The place where we all beganThe moon was intimate with the sandThe sun gave gifts, the waters moreWe grew and wandered, evermore
Leave your cares on the lone prairieGod is there, there's nothing HeHas told your fathers but to sayThis is the only way
THE LONE PRAIRIE

I have this memory, seeIt started out friendlyA door to door salesman cameoffering a door to a different fatea fate I could not love yetbut there he wasfriendly and kindand held an accordionin a casebut an accordionjust the sameThe velvet smellthe glossy shinethe black and whiteand red and buttonsand I swear to youas pure as my attractionto anything at the timethose keys and colorswere naturalunder my slender fingersand quiet eyes
THE ACCORDION

and I played to a mirrorto the salesman's delightThis boy's a naturalRight or wrongnobody signedthe purchase agreementsoI feed imagination
9
Man, I can't believe exists a twilight zoneIn black and white and warm in-console blissEndearing, feline, Agnes Moorehead hissIs cooler now than then I could have known
Saltines, vanilla ice cream, dad's cologneOn blue nights, I, forgive me, reminisceBut find no memory of maternal kissWhen window-shattering eye finds us alone
As characters drive roles beyond their reachAnd fuel dimensions twixt such oppositesThat dread reality the show befitsA boy does lonely, cathode tube beseech
I've long since learnt that I was not the causeFor grieving just how gone she really was

PROFANITY
11
Profanity flows with practice The practice of angry thoughtgives gate to wrathful lashing It wasn't a serpentgave reason to flingblame but a serpentinewavelike brainseeded in humanity's cocoondid itby flaming godItall this timehas beenthe somehowignoredsomehowdeniedsomehow washed brainnegatedthatI'm suregod help medid it

Igor, pleaseHad you no clue?Psalms are not hallowed eveningsare they?
You know, I've noticedholiday cheer doesn't fitthe minor, modal deviceWho can hear it?
There's no magical wonderfulThere's no crack nutsrhyme or reasondirect connectionfrom candy popschocolate killers in Octoberthrough stuffed turkey birdsall the way throughinjected all the way throughto blood virgin birth in a manger
IGOR
13
But waitDon't the Psalms merita happy songa sound of glee?Intuition tells meCome on, MoultonEase up, manYou're too tenseOctober through Decembershould be stress freeNo stress should accompanythe transition from falling leafto evergreen
OKlet's stop and thinkTo a regularprairie-eared descendantStravinsky just a tad weird eh?friggin' scaryI mean, honestly!volga boats and shit?Really?Even Russian youth in twenty-first centuryI wonder, do they even knowthe name Stravinsky?
OKlet's stop and thinkShould we be scared to think about dinosaursroaming primitive earthat a time just aftercreatures crawled from the seaonto the bellyof the earth, slurping the land
digging to hide the eggsof their continued existence?Oh noI should think notunless we have something to hide
There's nothing to hideif you are clearAll can abidethe truth close to hereDon't succumb to fearexcept in jest
The candy's great this wayHoliday cheerSweet eternityDon't lose connection to allthat makes you rememberthe joy of fulfilling sweet pleasuresweet longingsweet fear to sweet comfort

PUSH
15
But where does the birth of creativity lie?Whistle it in?Hand gesture it in?Scream it in?Only the gods can sayand they are mute in times like theseOh well
I like Sisyphuspushmy stone to the highest peakand roll with punchesback downbut laugh at the topwatching the stone roll downalonefrom time to timebecause laughter makes me strongstrong enoughto push and push again
16
All my life there have beenone or two or sometimes moreEveryone needs a heroI guesswomen tooBut their heroes are lessor actuallycould care less'cause, come onThey are already the true, the authentic, the purethe real workersthe really concernedLet's not fool our man selvesany longer, fools
Everything they dothey do betternever have to reloadIt's all right there
LET BE
17
right in their veinsOnly a man fool cannot see the deep irony The spellkeeps men from seeingthe profound wrongnessof their seeing
Once I asked a room full of men'Who, who, pray tellhas ever once doneor even tried to doeven one such menial labor task, one, only one exercise of fingernail-splittingvertebrae-bendingmophead-pushingthat would set their intimate companion free?'
The iron the rodthe dishwashing swellNot one nonot even one could sayHey the house mattersour holy refuge mattersLet me help you lovewoman let us helpYou carried our burden so
Let us learnto care your soulWe know you love us soSo, we are gratefulbut
teach us howhow simple gesturesthe most insignificantmake the purest differencebetween lost and found
You found usand treasure usThank you sowe will not forget
No?Let you be?

Fucker could sure writeis what they saiddrunk or notMe, I liked him better drunkthen than nowWhen I think of howhe always won an argumentwith mumbut lost his wit whenhe tried to sober upand got so serious about it allthe loss, the strainThough the blurry world was much the samewhen he cried and called mum's nameafter the many times she triedbut diedas when he'd hot breath't ranted
If I'd ever had a sonor ever even been oneI believe he'd have liked me better then, toothan when a sobering bell had rungand bonged me into sensibility
WARRIOR
19
Man, sensibility?
The warriors who live longlive to hear the bellThe bell only ringswhen the thing is sureSure enoughthe thing is dong donealmostListen to the warning'cause the end comeseven when you least expect
You might be carefullylistening one nightto the only sound of crickets in the nightcrickets signalingdoomtheir constantfrictiondizzyinginto submission
What do they know?Their wild waxingkeeping the insanityat bayhopingclaimingmighty scratchingguarantees chick cricketsswooning over the soundthe irresistible submittingsound
Sure, I'd fight too
Ribs ache to save the middle class baconLet me see my girls smilewith authenticity They don't know how daddy sees the world nor near how it sees me
Enough is enough! Is it any wonder a man that lives for protecting his ownwill do what the wild worldness will ever and always do?Hell, those mountain male gorillassilver backs gleaminglet and watchlet and watchand with a sober eyenever need forgivenessor trustTrustto the warrior's wildis not evenan afterthought
It all won't matter thenLooking back to whena man, clear-eyed or nolooked into his heart and said, noto his baser selfI know, the best of me resounds with bell resonanceand takes this vibrant lifeand survives long enoughto tellListen, a bell will tellwe're here to stayNothing dizzying will keep usfrom the matter most
20
I might say you inspired meThough you behaved so predictablyThe chasm deep when I fell inThe dark so bright I could not see
As goes Wichita Wichita goesShe loved me sure as no one knowsWell OK so one or twoLove lovers like the corn loves crows
The road I'm on I've never beenWhere once I stood I find I leanMy arches high my heels and toesSupport me but the air is thin
Don't get it wrong the myth it grewIf I was wild wild hubris knewKansas boys don't get off freeTheir wings are wax and feathers too
ICE HARVEST
21
Don't lie or think that I can never seeThe rage that lies behind your guilded powerThat blasted blue you don for causing cowerServes just to mask a man you cannot be
You badge and badger those that just like meBelieve in, hope for knights that shine their armourThough questing ruthlessly to soul devourVow softly now to bring serenity
A couple once somewhere is surely sureThat gods do favor lives that intertwineFor worse or best they enter treasured lineWithout regard for whether thoughts are pure
Persuade me once and shame falls hard on youDeceive my dream and love does life construe
SURRENDER

(based loosely upon Psalm 40: 1 - 3)

THE RIVER

Just as soon asthe coast is clearthe tears will flow
Actors practicethe craftbut the reality isno one knowswhen the only recourse to economic prison will come
It may come as private islands it may come astobacco havenstax freeIt may comeas crickets chirp in an otherwise quiet night

I remember theself promisedsure thingto a troubled mindwould surely come alongsurely come merelybecause the oft rewarded undeservingselfexpected suchsomehow
But it became easierto seenothing is due usnothing we can cry aboutreally merits due
Romeowe tried to keep our belovedalivebut perhaps the bestwe can operateis a sinking vesselbound down the cheeksof the best weourselves can offer
Let the gods bewareHumanity may swimwith the dolphinsbut the wavesswim truerthan we

the praises of Abel and Cainand get along just as such sons of shine and flowers and bitchesshouldindeedget along
Each time I lift and pourwhat I thoughtwas an endless bottlemy thoughts come to reassure mewhat I did was rightI walked a trailrode a Humvee coachprotected by God and angelsand each stepeach rpm was an answer to prayereven the one to change me forever
And the fire in my throatmatches the flame fires the blameto governmentsnot peopleFor people can find common groundwhen fearless sensible hero leaderscut the hand share the bloodmingle the truth that all need alland shed the view that separationis realitywalls bring security
Heroes are not driven by moneythough their dogma may say soReach in your pocket!Reach for your star!
Come on everybody! This makes who you are!Shame on youif you are not!Don't get leftor leave parts of youon the road to prosperityLet me just sayif life shreds youmake pepperoni pizza

Loss, like an illusion counted hardDrifts aimless, concentrated in the soulBe strong, the cry seeks sentimental goalBefore true reason cries inept canard
Count the drops upon the cold schoolyardWinter's worse deciphering bullet holesBut clear blue skies make easy flight for soulsSo long as grief denies not death's reward
Lord, lord I know it's hard, it's always beenTo count the symbol'd hooded innocenceAmong corrupted criminal offenseWhat, bottom line, is only youthful sin
Oh, what do I care but gamble poet's whimAnd share with losers faced with sink or swim

T'was when youth spoke and somehow prospered wellDefied the Capulets and MontaguesDeposits, rent, could not dispel the spellStood firm their vow, and loving life did choose
"Can't be," the voice of ages still insists,"Don't be stupid, life is not this way.""Oh, yes, yes, yes, we beat the odds and twistsAnd still we love and all the bills we pay!"
T'was then the fixed paradigm did shiftFor youth, love, work and wisdom coalescedIgnored the poo, poo, poo and found a giftWe'll struggle on, the primitive attest
