Sixth Form Mentoring Scheme

1 2

This is perhaps an all too familiar question for you as a Sixth Form student. While a number of you will have a clear idea about the path you wish to take, others will still be weighing up a world of possibilities. It’s important to know that both of these stages are just fine!

Project Pankhurst, our Sixth Form mentoring scheme is designed to help you prepare for the world beyond School. It is a forward-looking initiative and not just about getting you on your university course of choice. The initiative will enable you to make a connection with a former pupil who will support you as you make decisions about your professional development in the broadest sense.

This booklet documents those members of the Manchester High alumnae community who have volunteered to mentor a current Sixth Former. Pay attention to the mentor’s background and the level of support they can offer. Due to geography, lots of the mentoring partnerships we establish will be reliant on email, Skype and telephone contact, rather than face-to-face meetings, but these partnerships have proven just as successful as ones that are nearby.

Please note that virtual partnerships are preferable in the current climate, and as the year progresses face-to-face meetings and work experience or shadowing must be arranged in line with current guidance.

“What do you want to be when you finish university?”

“…make a connection with a former pupil who will support you as you make decisions about your

professional development.”

A limited number of mentors are available so we may not be able to match everyone with their first choice of mentor. Please note, participation in Project Pankhurst is not compulsory and you will all receive ongoing HE and careers advice from the Sixth Form team.

If you would like to be considered for a mentoring partnership, then please follow the application guidelines you have been given. All pupils’ guardians will also need to provide their permission during the application process.

The programme is called Project Pankhurst because the scheme enables our network of highly accomplished alumnae to uphold the Pankhurst legacy of women supporting each other. We greatly value the links we have with our alumnae, so please remember these people have volunteered their time and you will be representing Manchester High School for Girls. In the back of this booklet is some advice on how to be a great mentee and ensure both you and your mentor get the most out of the partnership.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Class: 2005

Further Education: University of Nottingham

Qualifications: Nutrition

Job Title: Customer Marketing Manager

Company: Cranswick PLC

Background Information:I left MHSG in 2005 to study Nutrition at The University of Nottingham and trained as a chemistry teacher at LJMU. I then worked as a chemistry teacher for three years but left to pursue a passion of mine within the food industry, knowing in my heart it wasn’t quite the right fit.

I commenced an operations role within ABP and then worked my way across a number of functions including quality and finally product development. I created and launched food products into retailers, which was a really exciting time and I learnt a lot about manufacturing and innovation in the food industry. In 2017 I moved into marketing and haven’t looked back. We work to glean insight from shoppers to ensure we have the right product on the shelf. It involves lots of tasting and I work with continental meat and olives, so no hardship for me either! It’s a totally food focussed role that means I get to chat about what I love for most of the day and seeing our products reach the supermarket shelves is one of the most rewarding parts!

What’s On Offer:I think I would have a breadth of experience to offer some insight into varied career options. There is an opportunity for some marketing shadowing at my place of work, should that be of interest, with over the phone support or email - or whatever suits, I would have really valued a similar opportunity when I was in Sixth Form.

Advertising, Marketing and Communications

Top Tip:Don’t assume the career you start with will be the one you have for life. Pursue what you love and the rest will come together.

Class: 2004

Further Education: Manchester School of Art

Qualifications: Design and Art Direction

Job Title: Creative

Company: McGarrybowen London

Background Information:I am one half of a female creative team, which is rare in an industry still dominated by men. We also run the Cannes Lionness project which you can view here: www.canneslionesses.com

What’s On Offer:I would be happy to have a conversation with my mentee about what they would find most useful. I am London-based but I am sure we can work something out!

Miss Holly Fallows

Miss Helen Coulson Class: 2001

Further Education: University of Leicester

Qualifications: English Literature

Job Title: Head of Marketing Activations

Company: Adidas

Background Information:I worked in marketing across both the tech (Apple) and finance (Amex) industries but have specialised in fashion marketing for the last 10 years, having worked at Burberry, Converse, Topshop Topman and now heading up marketing activations at Adidas.

What’s On Offer:I absolutely love my profession and want to help others achieve this too. I am happy to help with CVs, course selection, interview prep, career advice and insights into marketing, as well as potentially offering work shadowing. I’m equally happy to look at any projects you’re working on. I am based in London but return to Manchester frequently so would be happy to offer mentoring support via email, FaceTime, text, phone and occasionally face-to-face.

Architecture

Class: 2004

Further Education: Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art 2005 - 2012

Qualifications: BArch & DipArch Architecture

Job Title: Architect

Company: Michael Laird Architects

Background Information:As a Part 1 Architectural Assistant, I worked in Manchester and Norway. Then at Reiach and Hall in Edinburgh following university. The RIBA Stirling Prize-nominated City of Glasgow Colleges was my first major project, offering fantastic experience from the early bid stages through to the construction on site.

I have recently joined a new practice in Glasgow, Michael Laird Architects. I am also studying Construction Law, with the intention of being involved in building contract disputes.

What’s On Offer:Although I live in Glasgow, my family are in Manchester so I would be happy to meet up, discuss university choices and portfolios etc.

Mrs Nicola Bird

Top Tip:Gain work experience in an architectural practice where

possible. Architecture school is a long commitment. Spending a few weeks in a practice early on would be

great experience to test it out for size.

Top Tip:Lean in, embrace the

opportunity and be willing to step out of your comfort zone

A great quote that has seen me through many challenging

times: “You’re so busy doubting yourself while so

many others are intimidated by your potential.”

Miss Jennifer Bromley

Class: 2007

Further Education: The University of Nottingham

Qualifications: Politics and International Relations: (CIMA) Chartered Institute of

Management Accounting

Job Title: Senior Manager | Advisory

Company: EY

Background Information:Following on from university I pursued a career in consultancy. I did not necessarily have a ‘calling in life’, however, I have always been a strong all-rounder who enjoys variety, meeting new people and solving problems.

Since starting my career in 2011 I have had a wealth of experience in designing and leading strategically significant cross-border engagements across the regulatory and structural change agenda that has dominated the Banking and Capital Market industry.

I am currently focusing on the global trade agenda, leading the development of EY’s Global trade campaign across all geographies and industries.

Being part of a ‘big 4’ consulting firm has afforded me a number of fantastic opportunities to travel, with secondments in Cape Town, Singapore, New York and regular business trips to many other countries.

What’s On Offer:Happy to be guided by the mentee, but I am more than happy to offer advice on CVs, letters of application, interviews, assessment centres and any other general career progression advice.

I’m based in London so we would need to communicate predominantly through email, Skype etc. but there may be opportunities for me to get to Manchester to meet in person.

Business, Consulting and Startups

9 10

Miss Murvah Iqbal

Class: 2014

Further Education: King’s College London

Qualifications: International Development

Job Title: Co-Founder

Company: Hived

Background Information:After visiting Silicon Valley in San Francisco (the epicentre of startups) in my second year of university, I was determined that I wanted to work on building my own startup and work in innovation. I was able to gain deep insights into companies such as Tesla who were solving crucial problems in the world. After leaving university, I was able to network and gain some experience in small, fast-paced startups. I continued to research some of the most exciting start-ups and how they managed to grow so quickly. Three years after leaving university I started my own startup with two people, which revolved around advertising on courier vans. However, as we worked closely with these courier vans, we soon realised the routes they were driving daily were highly inefficient and very bad for the environment. We then shifted our business model to Hived - 100% emission-free parcel delivery, starting in London. Our aim is to revolutionise parcel delivery in an environmentally friendly way to cope with the increasing demands of home delivery, by harnessing the power of technology along with our revised method of parcel delivery. Since coming up with the idea, we have managed to win an InnovateUK grant competition as well as raising funding for our venture. We have now gone live and have began delivering parcels in central London with the backing of some major clients.

What’s On Offer:The startup world can seem very daunting, risky and scary. I want to change that perception and I am willing to offer deep insights on how the industry works; from explaining the start-up jargon, how fundraising works and the science behind a successful startup. I am also able to offer advice and contacts for work experience within fast-paced startups. I can also suggest some great books and content to help you get a deeper understanding of startups and how they operate.

Top Tip:

Network, network and network!

Ms Annette Kurer

Background Information:I am a global leadership consultant and motivational speaker whose career has evolved through four major career transformations. I am passionate about supporting women to be their best authentic selves, and achieve the work/life balance they aspire to.

I qualified as a dentist before joining the corporate world in 1988. I worked at Pearl & Dean Publishing for three years before moving to Unilever Cosmetics International, managing multi-million-pound Calvin Klein fragrance businesses in over 20 countries while launching over 10 number one fragrances.

What’s On Offer:Advice and strategies for how to get ahead in the industry and how to succeed in a non-linear career.

Miss Anna Szczerkowska

Class: 2009Further Education: University of York

Exchange in Hong Kong

Founders AcademyQualifications: History and Economics BA

Alternative-MBA

Job Title: Product Marketing Manager

Company: Vita Mojo

Background Information:After leaving MHSG, I took a year out to teach English in Nepal, and then went to study History with Economics at the University of York with an exchange year at the University of Hong Kong. Following graduation, I spent two years working at the dairy cooperative, Arla Foods, gaining experience across supply chain, sales and product development. However, I was pining to be abroad again and applied for the international management programme with John Swire & Sons. I was airdropped into their shipping business, working in operations and commercial roles based in Singapore, London and, finally, Vancouver where I ended my time with the company. After years of international experience and intense development in business and leadership, I took some time out to think about my next move. I joined my partner in Nairobi and worked with an education and creative industries startup which gave me my first taste of startup culture. I loved it. On our return to London, I enrolled in an Alternative-MBA programme with Founders Academy, designed to build dynamic leaders for an ever-changing world. Through this programme, I transitioned into the startup tech ecosystem. I am currently part of the Product team at Vita Mojo: a software business for hospitality, supporting the sector through the challenges of the pandemic and beyond!

What’s On Offer:It can be very overwhelming having to think about the next stage of your life - especially in the current climate. I can offer guidance on the range of higher education options that are available, support to anyone considering a year abroad or working abroad, and information for those interested in a career in business, tech, or an unconventional industry such as shipping. I may also be able to arrange a virtual work experience placement to give a taste of what it is like to work in tech - the industry needs more diversity!!

Top Tip:A career for life does not exist anymore. You always

have options.

Civil Service

Class: 1999

Further Education: UCL

Qualifications: French BA

Job Title: Organisation Design Consultant

Company: Department for Education

Background Information:After graduating from UCL I did the fairly standard routine of temping and travelling – including living in China for a year. I eventually decided to get a ‘proper’ job and so joined the Civil Service through the Fast Stream programme in 2006.

Since then I’ve worked in a wide range of roles – from working on the Forced Marriage Bill in parliament, to being a Regional Manager for the Tribunals Service, to working on citizenship at the Home Office. After a few years of working on policy and projects in Whitehall, I found my niche in change management and organisation design. My role is to make government departments better at delivering for the general public and better places to work.

I love my job! No two days are ever the same, and I’m always learning. Right now I’m getting involved in digital transformation – looking at how we can move more public services online.

What’s On Offer:Whilst for the majority of my working life I’ve been a civil servant, because of the wide and varied nature of the Civil Service, I’ve managed to ‘have a go’ at lots of different types of work: from policy to delivery, to culture change, to communications and engagement, to project management, to leadership and people management.

I’ve learnt a lot along the way (and am still learning) and would be more than happy to share my experiences. I can also offer advice and guidance for anyone looking for a career in government. I was also never really sure of what I wanted to do ‘when I grew up’ and I’ve changed my mind a few times… (and luckily I’ve found a job where I can do lots of very different things without changing employer!) So if that’s you – and you’d like someone to bounce ideas around with – that’s on offer too!

Mrs Emma Hamilton

Top Tip:Be yourself.

Charity

Class: 1999

Further Education: Leeds University

Qualifications: Biology

Job Title: CEO

Company: The First Step

Background Information:I have a Biology degree but followed a completely different route after graduation and have worked across the private and charity sectors. I am currently the CEO of a charity based near Liverpool and have worked in roles at a number of front line charities, as well as at grant makers - who provide funding to the delivery charities that directlysupport people in need. A CEO role is very varied and challenging, no two days are the same. I have ultimate responsibility for areas including writing and delivering on strategies, finance, HR, marketing, developing partnerships and designing new services. I have previously been a Head of Development, responsible for generating income for a charity, and an Operations Manager of a homelessness charity, each requiring different sets of skills. The sector has many opportunities in almost every discipline and the work is incredibly rewarding.

What’s On Offer:I can offer support and guidance on developing a career in the charity sector in general, including how to know if this type of work is for you, the realities of working in the sector, what qualifications and experience are actually useful, how to progress, finding and securing your dream role and networking.

been so helpful over the years in my career.

What’s On Offer:I aim to offer whatever level of mentoring you need; I can usually arrange work experience/personal statement and interview advice.

17 18

Miss Beky Parry

Class: 2003Further Education: Vocational Conservatoire

Qualifications: American Associate Degree in Occupational Studies

Job Title: Head of Lighting and Projection - Les Miserables UK Tour

Company: I work in technical theatre, mostly lighting for touring productions and a little bit of

small scale production management.

Background Information:I left Manchester High in 2001 after GCSEs and trained as an actor before doing a work-study placement in the production department at my college. During my acting training, I worked as a carpenter and stage manager inside the college to support myself and focused on this when I left college. I ended up working in lighting by networking and being a helpful, quick learner and learned my skills ‘on the job’ which is still a very possible route for theatre technicians. There are increasing numbers of formal apprenticeships where young technicians can get the skills and qualifications they need and progress more quickly.

What’s On Offer:As I am touring, I would only be able to offer work experience placements at certain times of the year when I am in the Manchester area. I would also love to help any girls who were interested in this field get the connections they would need to get their first jobs, as I am well connected to some of the big houses in London as well as touring people.

Top Tip:Don’t panic if you haven’t got your path mapped out yet. Keep trying things that sound exciting or interesting, apply yourself, and you can’t go wrong.

Drama, Theatre and The Arts

Miss Sophie Howard

Class: 2007Further Education: University of Bristol, LAMDA,

University of ManchesterQualifications: BA (Hons) Drama: Theatre and

Performance Studies,

MFA Professional Acting (Two year course), PGCE Primary Education

Job Title: Actor and Teacher

Company: Greater Manchester Primary School

Background Information:Acting credits include:Phebe in As You Like It for Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory, Annie in the original production of Peter Pan Goes Wrong for Mischief Theatre, Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet and Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew both for The Willow Globe Theatre, Hecuba in Women of Troy for LAMDA, Evelyn in Absent Friends at the Lyric, Hammersmith.

Following a successful number of years performing in the theatre, I completed a PGCE which has enabled me to have a balanced career acting and teaching; both of which I find extremely rewarding and enjoyable.

I am currently a member of the Senior Leadership Team, English lead and Year 6 teacher at a primary school in Greater Manchester.

What’s On Offer:I would be happy to offer advice to up to three mentees who have an interest in acting (theatre or television) or education. I would be particularly interested in offering guidance to MHSG pupils who are hoping to apply for places at drama school. I know I would have found it beneficial to gain an insight into the acting world and the life of a drama school student prior to starting my further education. I could also share my experiences with pupils who have an interest in pursuing a career in middle or senior management in an educational context.

Top Tip:Continue to pursue your ambition despite the challenges you may face. I believe it is incredibly important to find a career that you find challenging, rewarding and satisfying in equal measure.

Dr Judith Bennett

Education

Class: 1975

Further Education: University of York

Qualifications: Chemistry with Education

Job Title: Professor of Science Education

Company: University of York

Background Information:I began my career as a teacher of Chemistry and Physics, mainly in London. While I was teaching, I studied part-time for my MA and then a PhD in Science Education at King’s College in London. I then took up a lectureship at the University of York. I have two particular interests. The first is encouraging young people, and particularly women, to pursue careers in the STEM subjects. The second is making sure that educational research makes a difference for the better to pupils’ experiences and achievement in science in their schools. Much of my research and professional activity focuses on these two areas. As Head of the Education Department at York for eight years (the first female head of the department), I also have experience in leadership and management.

What’s On Offer:I would love to mentor someone interested in education and in science, and in supporting girls and women to achieve in these areas. I can offer email and Skype mentoring, and possible meetings in York. I would also be happy to host a visit for anyone considering applying to the University of York.

Top Tip:Make the most of the

opportunity to work with a mentor, and don’t be afraid to get in touch. Some things will be useful, some may not, and some things may not seem useful at the time, but may

become useful at a later point.

Class: 2011

Further Education: University of Sussex

University of BolognaQualifications: German and Italian BA

Arts and Culture Management MA

Job Title: Freelance Writer

Background Information:After studying Fine Art, German and Latin at A-level, I went on to study German and Italian ab initio at the University of Sussex, including an Erasmus year abroad in Bologna, Italy. After my Bachelor Degree I decided to continue studying, undertaking a master’s course in Arts and Culture Management at the University of Bologna.

After five years of living in Bologna and Venice, I am now fluent in Italian. Since completing my studies, I have worked at private art galleries, art fairs, the Venice Biennale, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Fondazione MAST in the educational department.

In my free time, I am an active member of a non-profit cultural association and we organise an annual film festival dedicated to short films. I am currently working as a freelance writer, preparing articles on the art world, various exhibition spaces and contemporary art in general, both in Italy and abroad.

What’s On Offer:The art world can be a daunting sector to enter, but with perseverance and patience it is possible to find your place. I am available to support and give advice to the Sixth Form students who are interested in the art world, galleries and museums, but also those who are interested in studying a foreign language and want to study abroad. Unfortunately, I am unable to meet in person but happy to talk over the phone, Zoom or via email.

Ms Glesni Williams

21 22

Class: 1975Further Education: University of Birmingham

Trinity College CambridgeQualifications: Civil EngineeringJob Title: Engineering ConsultantCompany: Previously Vice-President, BG Group

Background Information:I have worked in the international oil and gas industry for over 30 years as an engineer and senior executive. My work has taken me to many countries; at one time I was Regional Chairman of British Gas Asia Pacific (based in Singapore) and later President of British Gas Italy (based in Milan). I have also worked on oil rigs in the North Sea. I have a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Cambridge and am a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Today I am an independent expert advising governments and companies all over the world on major energy infrastructure projects that cost hundreds of millions of pounds.

What’s On Offer:I live and work in Italy, but I have found that email communication and sessions via Skype are effective. I can put mentees in touch with others in my network if the need arises.

Dr Yvonne Barton

Engineering

Top Tip:Don’t be afraid to talk frankly and openly with your mentor. The conversation is

confidential and you will probably find that they have experienced the same worries

and challenges as you are facing now.

Miss Seyi Smith

Class: 2014

Further Education: University of Birmingham

Qualifications: BSc Business Management

Job Title: Programme Support Officer

Company: BPP University

Background Information:My background and experience are in business operations, education, administration and event management. Whilst I was at Manchester High, I gained a huge wealth of knowledge studying Economics and Business at A-level. I soon realised that I wanted to work in a successful business in an operations role, but I wasn’t sure what industry or what particular role I wanted to pursue. Therefore, I knew I had to gain a variety of experience until I found my niche. I started by being the Model Manager (organising the hair, make-up and clothes) for the Decadence themed fashion show in Junior Sixth. I had to liaise with the choreographers, AV team, hair and make-up artists and took part in choosing the models.

During my Business Management degree at university, I learnt more about event/project management, operations, accounting and finance- helping me gain an insight into how successful firms work as a whole. After university I gained priceless experience working as an Event Manager and as Administration Support in successful companies for a few years before finally settling into a role at BPP University, somewhere a lot of Manchester High girls attend for further study. I support the operations of the Business School, including helping the tutors, students and its programmes.

I have worked across different areas, gaining different skills and experience to help support the role I am in today, and I am happy to offer advice about anything!

What’s On Offer:Support over email, phone and face-to-face (once restrictions allow). I live in Cheadle and I’m happy to arrange meetings after work/school hours. I can offer advice on personal statements, university life, jobs and careers.

Top Tip:It’s not a problem if you don’t know what you want to do straight away, or if you change your mind a few times. There is always time to find your path, so don’t ever feel like you are running out of time. If you want to work in an industry or a specific company, research it constantly and learn what sort of skills you need to achieve it. LinkedIn and career websites are great for this. Write down every question you have for your mentor so your meetings can be more productive. Don’t be afraid to ask anything, and don’t procrastinate!

23 24

Class: 2016

I have worked in various environments outside of this and have faced the uncertainty that comes with choosing career choices in the recent past so understand how to deal with the challenges associated with such a time.

What’s On Offer:Whatever is needed!

Miss Esha SenTop Tip:There are no bad experiences, only stepping stones on your way to where you eventually want to be.

Top Tip:Ask lots of questions! I think at school you aren’t able to gain a wide awareness of what possible careers are

out there, and you can only find out if you’re curious. Something may be perfect for you that you have never

considered!

Class: 2013Further Education: University of Bristol

Qualifications: MEng Civil Engineering

Job Title: Civil Engineer - Section Engineer for High Speed 2 Main Works (West

Background Information:I have been working with Skanska for almost three years now, after graduating from university in 2017. I am working towards gaining Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers, and have completed a variety of rotations to gain a wide range of experience.

I spent my first nine months working as an on-site engineer on a Thames Water project, diverting a 42” trunk main through the Camden Town/Euston area of London. Then I moved to High Speed 2 Main Works to complete additional ground works. After that, I was seconded to a design consultancy, Mott MacDonald, to gain technical experience in tunnel design. Now I am back with Skanska managing a section of works on High Speed 2, involving the construction of bridges and embankments for the new railway, all next to an existing live railway!

Civil engineering and construction can offer a really diverse career. Whether you are interested in the design or construction of railways, tunnels, roads, buildings or bridges, there is the opportunity out there!

What’s On Offer:Very happy to be contacted via phone and/or email, or to meet face-to-face in London. I am permanently London-based so I am not back in Manchester that frequently, however I am allowed volunteer days to help with mentoring.

- Mechanical Engineering. Job Title: Metal Manufacturing Technologies LeadCompany: Boeing Europe

Background Information:After leaving Boeing Europe, I am now studying the GDL conversion (law) for my next adventure. The plan is to merge my career in engineering with law. Over the last decade and a half, I am fortunate to have led some extremely exciting engineering programmes. Starting in the water industry, before moving to aerospace after a few years, which eventually led to an opportunity with Bloodhound SSC. My background is focused on design engineering and 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing). I am privileged to have worked with engineers across the world and regularly felt the pain of working across multiple time zones in one day.

Class: 1987

Further Education: University of Manchester

Qualifications: Biochemistry

Job Title: Chartered Accountant

Company: Spirit Data Capture

Background Information:When I was at school I didn’t know what I wanted to do afterwards, and had great difficulty choosing my options for A-level. I did a degree in Biochemistry but knew by the end of my degree course that I wanted to work in a field which would give more immediate results and leave my options open as far as possible. I trained as a chartered accountant with KPMG in Manchester and went on to work there for 11 years. I worked with a huge variety of companies across the Northwest and elsewhere in the UK and sometimes Europe; it was a time of great change in industry, with manufacturing, which had been the backbone of industry in the north, disappearing quite rapidly, and globalisation and technology opening up new but very different opportunities and working patterns.

With KPMG, I worked on a large number of audits, mergers, acquisitions and privatisations of companies, as well as doing two years in forensic accounting. I then spent eight years at United Utilities - two years as financial accountant for one of the business groups - this included managing a joint venture and its legal contracts as well as implementing a new accounting system and preparing the monthly financial reports; and six years in internal audit, including five years as Head of Internal Audit, which was the most senior finance role held by a woman across the organisation at the time. I also fitted in a year’s maternity leave during that time.

Since leaving United Utilities I have worked for AstraZeneca, helping with the transfer of jobs overseas, and set up my own accountancy practice, preparing accounts and tax returns for small companies. I now work part-time for a small IT company and am responsible for the finance, HR, facilities and legal work.

Over the years, I have had some great experiences and worked with some fantastic people. Nothing has ever stood still, and every day has been different and exciting in its own way. I have faced challenges along the way, particularly around making sure that women are given the same opportunities as their male colleagues, and with trying to balance family and work commitments, but have tried to turn these to my advantage. At the end of the day, things always seem to work out for the best.

Background Information:When I left school I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I was enjoying my A-level course in Business Management and Economics so decided to continue with this course at university. It was a very varied course which included modules of HR, marketing, advertising, occupational psychology, brand management, business tourism and statistics, amongst others.

I found I was drawn to marketing and brand management and hoped to get a job following my degree in these areas. Sadly, it wasn’t to be so I took a job at a large local property development company, The Emerson Group, working in the office lettings team which partially drew on my marketing knowledge. It was enjoyable and after some months I became interested in furthering my career in property. I was lucky that my company agreed to pay for me to do a distance-learning postgraduate diploma in Surveying which took two and a half years in total. This allowed me to ultimately become a Chartered Surveyor in Commercial Property.

There are a number of sub-specialisms within this area and I have ultimately settled on Commercial Property Management which is extremely varied. It allows me to get out of the office, inspecting properties, meeting clients and tenants, problem solving and networking.

Background Information:I left MHSG in 2000 after my GCSEs and I went to work for a small accountancy practice based in Stockport, as a tax assistant. This was a fantastic opportunity as it introduced me to the world of finance. I worked for a couple of accountancy firms including Grant Thornton where I decided that it was time for me to complete a qualification in accounts. I was lucky that whilst working in the finance department of a nursing home they agreed to fund my AAT course at Tameside College. After successful completion, I was promoted to Senior Finance Officer and I assisted the accountant with the completion of accounts for three nursing homes, a domiciliary care agency and two charities.

After my maternity leave with my second child, I decided that I needed a new challenge and I took the role of Accounts Administrator with my current employer. This is a small company where we are in the process of bringing all the accounts functions in-house.

Mrs Jordana White

Class: 1986

Further Education: University College London

Qualifications: Economics & Statistics

Job Title: Chief Risk Officer, Fellow of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries

Company: OneFamily

Background Information:After graduating, I started work in actuarial consultancy in London alongside studying for professional exams. Working and studying at the same time was quite challenging and there were some retakes along the way, so I was very proud, delighted and above all relieved when I qualified 5 years later. Actuarial study is all about assessing the probability and financial impact of future events, typically in relation to insurance businesses and pensions. There’s quite a lot of mathematical and statistical material but also study of investments and regulation. Over the course of my career I’ve made some sideways moves and have spent a lot of my time working in Compliance and Risk Management roles. I’ve worked for a number of bigger companies including PwC, Legal & General and Bupa but am currently enjoying life at a smaller company, OneFamily.

As Chief Risk Officer, my role is to provide an independent view to the Board of the risks facing the business and how effectively they’re being managed. Like in many jobs, it’s really mostly about communication, judgement and building an effective team. I’m also part of the Executive team of the business so I get involved in advising on many of the decisions that the business makes. My role is very broad and in the course of a day I could be looking at pretty much anything: the methodologies we use in our financial reporting; how we’re communicating with our customers; the outlook for financial markets; and how we’re managing cyber risks – to name just a few things. I’m by no means an expert in all of these areas so there’s always a lot to learn and no day is the same.

What’s On Offer:I would be very happy to have phone calls / video calls to discuss career paths, interview techniques, and whatever else might be useful. I can share my perspectives on working life, based on my own experiences and my observations of how friends and colleagues have managed their careers. For anyone interested in financial services, I can share insights into different career routes and may be able to help with introductions to others in the industry.

Class: 1991

Further Education: Lancaster University

Qualifications: BA (Hons) Educational Studies and Business Law

MSc in Psychology from MMU

Job Title: HR Consultant

Company: Job Seeker Coaching - Self-employed

Background Information:I left MHSG after GCSEs in 1989 having been there since I was seven. I’m still very close friends now with girls I was at school with and moving back to South Manchester in 2013 really felt like coming home. I went to Lancaster University and hated every single minute of my three years there so no-one is more surprised than me that I have returned to academia several times since for extra post grad learning and also been Head of HR at a university (the Glasgow School of Art). A huge part of my career has been in policing and I have undertaken several different specialisms for three different police forces. I was the Equality and Diversity manager for Cheshire Police during the time of the Stephen Lawrence enquiry into racism in policing, was part of the senior management team in a project for the Home Office on developing a competency framework for the entire police service in England and Wales in early 2000s (some 44 forces, so that job required a lot of travel) and Acting Head of Personnel for City of London Police. But I’ve also worked in professional services, global banking, private consultancy and private health care. HR is such a versatile profession - it can take you all over the world and into every sector. If you enjoy working with people and understanding what makes them tick, it’s a great career, albeit not the best-paid profession out there.

What’s On Offer:As an HR consultant I have recruited some of the very best people for some renowned and worldwide organisations so I have plenty of professional advice about application forms, CVs and covering letters for all types of roles and my own company now specialises in exactly that. Moreover, if HR, employment law or coaching/development are your thing, then I can share with you what I’ve learnt from my career as an HR professional in the corporate world, SME sector and public and charitable sectors. I can provide 1-2-1 coaching sessions on interview and presentation skills as well, useful for university applications as well as in the world of work. As I work for myself now, I cannot offer any meaningful work shadowing.

Job Title: Self-employed Property Manager

Company: Winn Property Limited

Background Information:My starting career was a baptism of fire, working for a fast-paced marketing agency, presenting marketing strategy to multi-nationals and managing campaigns. Feeling a little disillusioned, I moved to corporate funding for GE commercial finance (General Electric at the time was the 2nd largest company in the world). I progressed through the ranks until I became a regional director originating and completing on corporate funding up to £20million.

In 2014, after my second maternity leave, GE divested of our division and there were global redundancies. Having worked there for nine years, it was time to look for a new challenge. I moved to Metro Bank (the first new challenger bank to be granted a banking licence in over 100 years), I was top-ranked in the new business team out of a team of 20 (all male with me being the exception).

After two years, my then three and four-year-olds were being a little neglected from my constant travelling so I made the decision to step down. I took some time out and set up Winn Property Limited where I source self-funded commercial properties and manage them. I have a great work-life balance and can do pick up and drop offs for my beautiful girls who are in Manchester High Prep.

What’s On Offer:I can provide whatever the requirements are of the mentee. From personal statements, to self presentation, interview tips and insight into working in a male-dominated environment.

Qualifications: Bachelors in Astrophysics and Masters in Humanitarianism and Conflict Response

Job Title: Acting Director of Operations

Company: Muslim Council of Britain (MCB)

Background Information:Currently I work with a community organisation in the UK after having worked in the humanitarian space for seven years. I believe my varied background, range of experience and my ability to transfer skills across sectors would be of interest to prospective mentees.

After my Bachelors in Science it was clear to me that I really wanted to head in a different direction. I used my voluntary work with charities to explore international development. A three month placement in Ghana, a stint with Christian Aid, and another placement in the Philippines led me to my Masters. After that, I fell into working with a local organisation on the Syria response, I relocated to Turkey and worked in that region including Iraq and Jordan for almost five years with both local and international organisations. I gained a lot of hands on experience in operational and general management, as well as advocacy and project management work which led me to my current role.

I am a good fit for anyone interested in Development, Humanitarian Aid, or community-based organisations. But equally, anyone who is confused about what they want to do (I have a lot of experience with that!) or not interested in taking the typical career path.

What’s On Offer:I am happy to offer support and advice on career options. I am based between London and Manchester but I think phone/Skype or email sessions would be best. We can work out schedules between us, depending on work demands.

After sage advice, I chose a degree that combined what I loved, and through a module with the law school, decided to do the GDL and embark on a career in law.

I did the GDL, the LPC, and then I converted and entered the legal market. This happened at the height of the recession, and so I initially struggled to find a training contract. I worked in a high street firm doing family law initially and then moved into Real Estate and to a regional firm before stepping up to the silver circle, if anyone is not sure on the best type of firm for them and the reality or pros and cons of working in them, I’ve experienced them all!

I enjoyed the analytical aspects of my subjects, and combined with my love of debating, developed during MUN conferences, I applied to study Law at university. Although it is not necessary to study Law to become a lawyer, I preferred the range and depth of legal subjects that the degree would allow me to explore, over the one-year conversion course. I graduated in 2019 with an LLB Law degree from UCL, and following this, accepted a training contract offer with magic circle solicitors’ firm Clifford Chance. I will begin my LPC (Legal Practice Course) in July 2021 and start working as a trainee solicitor in February 2022.

Job Title: Corporate Associate

Company: Fieldfisher LLP

Background Information:I took an unexpected gap year after deciding to withdraw from my offer to study Human Anatomy at KCL and secured some work experience with Eversheds Sutherland. Whilst there, I assisted on the Mid Staffs Public Inquiry which kick-started my interest in Law.

On finishing my law degree, I returned to Eversheds Sutherland as a trainee and remained for a number of years post-qualification. Since then I have moved to the corporate team at Fieldfisher LLP where I specialise in public company fundraising, IPO‘s and takeover work. It is a hectic but rewarding profession which I really enjoy.

Qualifications: Medicine (MBChB)

Job Title: Surgical Clinical Fellow

Company: Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester

Background Information:I firmly believe that I would not be where I am today without MHSG - it was a school that pushed me to reach my full potential and gave me faith that women should continue to “break glass ceilings”.

After leaving MHSG in 2013, I went on to study Medicine at Birmingham, where my aspiration to be a surgeon started. I completed my Foundation Years in the West Midlands, before moving back to Manchester in August 2020 for a Clinical Fellow job (out-of-training) in ENT/Neurosurgery and General Surgery. I am applying for Surgical Training in November.

What’s On Offer:I can provide advice and guidance about the decision to apply for Medicine, the application/interview process, what Medical School and being a doctor is actually like and anything else a mentee wants to know! I am happy to be messaged via Whatsapp or have a conversation on the phone/Skype etc.

Top Tip:Especially with a career like Medicine, try and gain as much information about the life you’re signing up for before you apply. But once you’ve decided, remember there is nothing you can’t achieve if you keep focussed and work hard (this was my mantra during medical school exams!)

Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust

Job Title: Educational Psychologist

Company: Barnet Education and Learning Services (Barnet Local Authority)

Background Information:After leaving MHSG and gaining my undergraduate degree, I took a six month break to travel. After a brief period doing work experience in a variety of industries trying to figure out if I could avoid a career that required me to get a doctorate, I decided I couldn’t and began a six year journey to qualify as an Educational Psychologist.

I worked in schools for three years supporting children with a range of special educational needs (including language, learning, social interaction and mental health). This gave me enough experience to earn a place on the doctorate course at the Tavistock and Portman (a mental health hospital in North London).

Qualifications: Biomedical Sciences, PhD Cell and Molecular Biosciences

Job Title: Associate Director, Scientific Writing

Company: PTC Therapeutics

Background Information:After completing my PhD, I decided I was ready to leave the lab bench and find a career that allowed the merge of science with medicine and disease. In particular, I became fascinated with rare disease, the science behind it, and how we can treat it to improve people’s lives. I believe that everyone, no matter how rare their disease is, deserves to have research done on it! My job fuses science, data analysis, and medicine, which, to me, is an awesome combination. I have brought several drugs to market in Europe and the US that are now frequently prescribed as standard of care. To me, that is the best job satisfaction you can ask for.

Miss Catherine Roberts

Miss Sujata Sridharan

Class: 2008

Further Education: University of Manchester

Qualifications: MPhys Physics with Astrophysics and a PhD Medicine

Job Title: Research Associate (academic/post-doc)

Background Information:I completed my PhD at the University of Manchester in 2016 and took up a post-doc at Imperial College, where I worked until 2019. Academia is a highly competitive environment and more often than not carries little reward or promise of job progression. While I enjoyed it, I found myself wanting to move away from the instability of the academic lifestyle.

I first heard about the field of medical communications (med comms) at a careers fair and decided to pursue it. Med comms is a fast-paced and dynamic field which encompasses a broad range of disciplines, from scientific writing to project management; editing to graphic design.

On a daily basis I work with medical and commercial leads at pharmaceutical companies and medical experts on cutting edge scientific data, commercial campaigns and medical education for novel drugs. Usually, the job involves a fair bit of travel and teamwork is key, so it is very different from academic life. The progression and job security are a bonus. If you love science but aren’t sure about a long-term career as an academic, med comms could be for you!

What’s On Offer:I’m happy to be flexible! Advice/work shadowing/contacts etc. I am happy to mentor as you need: by Skype, email or face-to-face as I am based in Cheshire.

Top Tip:

Don’t panic if you aren’t sure what to do when you leave school!

61 62

1. Don’t expect the mentor to drive your busIt’s your future, not theirs. The focus of mentoring is on you, the mentee, therefore don’t expect your mentor to do the hard work for you.

2. “Show Up” for the relationship and make the first contactOnce you are matched with a mentor, you should email them within the first week of having their contact details to introduce yourself and establish how often, and by what means, you should contact them. Please remember to CC Mrs Norton and Mrs Robinson in your first communication: [email protected] and [email protected]

You will find some hints and tips about how to make this initial contact on the next page.

Remember, your mentor is a volunteer and you should maintain clear boundaries and respect. If you need to reschedule an appointment with them you should give at least 24 hours’ notice.

3. Ask the right questionsBe prepared for the time you spend in contact with your mentor. Have a specific issue or idea that you would like to discuss. It doesn’t have to be monumental, sometimes simple things lead to great discussions and insights.

That said, think about the types of questions you ask. For example, asking your mentor, “What career should I go into?” is not appropriate as it is too open-ended. They are not there to tell you what to do.

Asking something along the lines of, “I’m deciding between two potential courses, here are the pros and cons of each, what do you think?” is much better. It shows you have put the background work in and have possibly formed an opinion of your own. Nobody wants to mentor someone who asks a million questions but puts forth no ideas of their own.

4. Give back and get moreShare examples with your mentor of how you are benefitting from the relationship and always say thank you. Tell them what advice you have acted on, what worked and what perhaps didn’t go so well; from this feedback your mentor will have a better idea of how to help you in the future.

Through the mentoring programme, you are being given the potential to build a relationship with someone who could prove a useful contact throughout your career, not just during your time at MHSG. Stay in touch; show an appropriate level of interest in their life. For example, if you see an article they would like, forward it to them. Do they have a blog? Keep up to date with posts and comment from time to time.

How to Be a Great Mentee

5. This is not about comfort zonesA mentor is not supposed to make you feel comfortable about where you currently are in your life. They should challenge you. Sometimes you may present an issue to your mentor and from their response, you may think they have not understood you. However, their response is simply from a totally different view point; be open-minded.

6. Be you! Remember, you don’t need to act like your mentor. You are an individual with your own path to follow. Your mentor is simply there to share their experiences, resist the temptation to clone them. Your mentor will want to hear your opinions and know what makes you tick.

7. RUN through the doors that are opened for you Don’t meander, walk or skip through any doors that your mentor may open: run through them! If they provide an introduction for you to a particular person, invite you to an event or even set you up with a job interview, seize the opportunity as soon as possible.

8. Remember, your mentor is not a therapist, best friend, parent or partner Don’t use valuable mentoring time as an opportunity to have a moan, especially if you feel nobody else has listened to you! Be focused and positive to ensure you get the most out of exchanges with your mentor and leave them with a good impression each and every time.

9. Stay in touch! Not just with your mentor…Make sure to keep checking your emails, as Mrs Robinson and Mrs Norton will set up multiple meetings during the year in which to catch up with you on how your mentorship is progressing, and answer any questions you may have.

If you have any questions regarding your mentoring partnership at any stage, you can speak with:

Mrs S NortonDirector of Sixth Form [email protected]

Mrs L Robinson Alumnae and Development [email protected]

63 64

Once you have completed your application and you have been paired with someone, it is important to reach out to your Project Pankhurst mentor as soon as possible. Usually, email is the preferred method of initial communication. Not sure where to start in sending an email to your mentor? Follow this formula as a template to get you started! Remember to CC in Mrs Norton and Mrs Robinson in your initial communication.

SubjectMake sure the subject of the email includes “Project Pankhurst”

Examples:

• Project Pankhurst MHSG: I am your mentee

• I am your Project Pankhurst mentee

• Introducing myself as your Project Pankhurst mentee

GreetingAddress your mentor using the proper formality. As a student mentee reaching out to your alumnae mentor for the first time, you should address her as “Mrs.”, “Ms.”, “Dr.”, etc. for this first contact. Note, informal greetings such as “Hey,” “Hi,” or “What’s up,” are inappropriate.

Examples:

• Dear Dr. Smith, (then continue on the next line)

• Dear Ms. Patel, (then continue on the next line)

Introduction of yourselfTell your mentor your name and a little bit about yourself. What you are studying, and the extra-curricular activities you enjoy, for instance, are great pieces of information to include. Let your partner know that you’ve been paired through Project Pankhurst and why you’re reaching out to them.

Examples:

• You and I have been paired through the MHSG Project Pankhurst mentorship programme this year, and I am reaching out to touch base with you.

• I received your contact information from Mrs Robinson and Mrs Norton, and I am excited to have you as my mentor this year.

• I am contacting you because I have just received my pairing information from Mrs Robinson and Mrs Norton, and I am excited that I have been paired with you as my mentor.

How to Get Started

Share more about yourself/add a personal touchYour mentor will have received a similar pairing email/letter to the one you received, so they will have a little bit of background about you, but help them paint a better picture of who you are. Share a few additional details about yourself and add a personal touch to your email. Topics like hobbies, extracurricular interests, and some goals you have are all great introductory details.

Example:

• I also want to share a little bit more about myself. Outside of classes/work, I enjoy cooking, running, and travelling.

Set action itemsThroughout your mentoring relationship, it will be important to be purposeful and set action items or targets for your next interaction each time you communicate. In this instance, letting your partner know that you are looking forward to hearing from them and politely requesting a response would be appropriate actionable items.

Example:

• I am looking forward to learning more about you too. Please let me know if there is a time we can set up a phone call/meeting so I can learn more about you and we can discuss our mentoring relationship.

Formally end the emailBe polite and professional in ending your email. Consider thanking your mentor for volunteering their time to serve as a mentor. Use one of the following closings to end the email before signing your name:

• Sincerely,

• Best regards,

• Thank you,

• Best wishes,

• All the best,

Note: “Sign” your email with the name you would like your partner to call you by. If your name is “Samantha”, but you would prefer to go by “Sam” use that. On the reverse of this, take note of the name your partner uses to sign her emails and use that name when you address her going forward.

65 66

When you put all these pieces together, you end up with an email which looks something like this (use your own relevant information to fill in the parts in purple):

Full Template

Please note this resource is to be used as a guide. We encourage you to use your own wording and your own voice! Remember that this is the first impression you will be making to your mentor, so be polite and professional.

Dear Ms. Patel,

My name is Hannah Johnson and I am a Year 13 student from Oldham. You and I have been paired through the Project Pankhurst mentorship scheme at MHSG this year. I am contacting you because I have just received my pairing information from Mrs Robinson and Mrs Norton, and I am excited that I have been paired with you!

I want to share a little bit more about myself. Outside of classes, I enjoy cooking, running, and travelling.

I am looking forward to learning more about you too. Please let me know if there is a time we can set up a phone or video call so I can learn more about you and we can discuss our mentoring relationship.

Thank you for taking the time to serve as a mentor in the Project Pankhurst programme, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes,

Hannah
