RabbI’s coluMNcrEaTINg a good NEw yEar TogETHEr

Long gone are the days when Rosh Hashanah greeting cards filled our (non-digital) mailboxes. Today, email and social media are the modes through which most

of us share our wishes to friends for a Shanah Tovah. However, prior to World War ii, Yiddish greeting cards, complete with rhyming poetry and matching images, were common among Ashkenazi Jews in North America. Amongst these cards were many pointing towards a specific Jewish ideology. There is one historic card which pictures three smiths at a forge. A Jewish worker holds the blank metal sheet, while the other hammers in the words L’Shanah Tovah with an anvil. The card reads:Mir zaynen nay-yor shmidn,Un shmidn oys atsindDos glik far ale yidnUn lebn un gezint.“We forge the new year and are now forging good luck, life, and health for all Jews.”Of note is the omission of any religious imagery. While other cards of this era often featured families sitting around a holiday table, Jewish books, or candlesticks, this card is bereft of any classical Jewish imagery. Indeed, the brief poem puts the onus of creating “good luck, life, and health” not on a deity, but rather on the Jews themselves. This turning away from God and towards the community around holiday time was common amongst Jews of this generation. At Chanukkah, for example, Jews traditionally sang Ma’oz Tzur – a piyyut (liturgical poem) praising God’s role in saving the Jews from oppression during our much-beleaguered past. Now many also sing Mi Y’malel (Who Can Recall), written by the pre-State and early Israel musician Menashe Ravina, which speaks specifically about how just like in the days of the Maccabees, the Jewish community today must “redeem itself through deed and sacrifice”. God and religious worship is completely removed from the equation. At Adath Israel, we embrace the traditions handed down to us from generations past. At the same time, we turn to our members to ensure the success of our synagogue for today and tomorrow. Each day since I began my tenure at the shul in March, i am blown away by the commitment – time, talent, and resources – of those who choose to make Adath Israel their shul. I am working hard to meet all the wonderful people who compose this special shul.Even more than a physical card, the best way to convey new years’ wishes is to speak to a friend face to face – and face to face is how I’d like to get to know you. Please call me and we can get together in my office or over a cup of coffee. Find a few Adath Israel friends and we can schmooze at your home. There is nothing I want to do more at Adath Israel in my first year than to get to know you and the rest of the people who are the heart and soul of our sacred community. pREsIDENt’s MEssagE

As we move from the warmth of summer into the beauty and changes of fall, so too, are we moving through the changes of the Jewish seasons and

changes at Adath israel.

Your executive and board have been enjoying getting to know Rabbi Adam Cutler and helping our new Senior Rabbi settle in. We have been aiding him in getting to know our congregants and our traditions. We are thrilled at how quickly and easily Rabbi Cutler has adjusted in short order.

This summer, we welcomed our new Executive Director, Phil David, who joined us from his most recent position as Executive Director at Camp Kadimah. In the first six weeks at Adath israel, Phil has helped us put together and launch our major Fall Fundraiser, as well as ensure everything is coming together for the High Holidays, and the start of the new school year.

on ocTobEr 11th we will host our major fundraising event and are thrilled to welcome “THE FoNZ”, Henry winkler, to Adath israel to honour David Rosenberg, Chief Economist at Gluskin Sheff.

For Adath Israel to ensure high quality programming and for all our members to have the opportunity to engage in ongoing growth for the Jewish mind, body and spirit, it is necessary to fundraise, and we have put together a first-class event. If you have not ordered your tickets yet, please do so and encourage your friends and family to join us.

Change is not just about welcoming new, but also time to celebrate the retirement of others. We want to wish Honey Schein a sincere Todah Rabah and Mazal tov on her retirement this october. Honey has been working at Adath Israel for over 20 years, and it truly is her 2nd home. Honey, we wish you all the best and we know you will enjoy the extra time you have with your grandchild.

We hope we will still see you around Adath israel. Drop in at any time.

in the coming months you will see changes in our website. This has been in the works for more than a year and hopefully by the time you read this, our new site will have been launched. our new website could not have been possible without many volunteers and hours and hours of their time. Specifically, we have to thank our Publicity Chair, Susan Rubin, and members of her committee.

Acquiring and motivating volunteers is one of the time-consuming jobs of the President and our committee chairs. But, without the efforts of our many volunteers, we would not be able to maintain Adath israel day to day. As you plan for the New Year, ask yourself if you can spare some time to volunteer for your shul. Can you usher for an hour or so during Shabbat or Yom Tov services? or, take tickets one evening at a program? or contribute on a committee and even help out in the office? If yes to any or all of the above, please contact me directly at [email protected] or leave me a message through the office and you will be directed to the correct task that you choose to volunteer your time.

You are not required to complete the work, yet you are not allowed to desist from it.” ~ Pirkei Avot, 2:21

I want to wish all of you and your families a happy and sweet New year. l’Shanah Tovah Umetukah.

ExEcutIvE DIREctoR

Having begun my role as the Adath israel Executive Director in mid-June, i am asked all the time what my first impressions are of our wonderful Shul.

My first and ongoing observation has been how genuine and friendly everyone has been. It’s probably an overused cliché, but when you consider we are almost 4000 members strong and one of North America’s largest Conservative congregations, the thought of warmth and community may seem like an overpromise. But as the newbie on the block, I can share first-hand what you already know – we clearly have a great thing here at Adath israel and i’m thrilled to have been invited along for the ride.i am a born and bred Cape Bretoner, and i recently visited my home Shul in Sydney, Nova Scotia to attend one of the last Bar Mitzvah’s we’ll ever see in our temple. The inevitable fate of my childhood synagogue has been predicted for years as each generation migrates to big cities like Toronto to start their careers. Like many native Torontonians, young people aren’t necessarily joining congregations, partly because belonging to a Shul may be pushed down the priority list these days and partly because of competing financial burdens like mortgages, school fees, camp fees and after-school activities to name a few.So whether we hail from small towns or the center of Jewish life here in Toronto, as synagogues, we all have to up our game and think more strategically than ever about the next 25 years and beyond to ensure we can thrive in the future like we did during our glory years.I spent the last four years running the summer camp I attended as a kid – Camp Kadimah. After a quarter century entrenched in the corporate world, leading a Jewish camp was truly transformative. I only share this because after just six short weeks here, I am truly amazed at the similarities between my old life and my new life. Other than the fact I no longer have mosquitoes buzzing in my ear at night or rocks in my shoes all day – and knowing my average target market has shifted dramatically from 10-year olds to a slightly more mature demographic - i am truly amazed at how familiar the challenges are between my previous and current roles. The most noticeable overlap, at least through a business lens, is the importance of driving topline revenue.

This is not to diminish the importance of keeping a close eye on what we spend, but we know we should never be over-dependent on membership fees to sustain ourselves. Every donation we receive, every Bar and Bat Mitzvah we host, every wedding we attract…they all play key parts in our future. And all of us, close to 4000, can play a role. True, we can invest in marketing all we want – and we must embrace a rapidly evolving media landscape like Facebook or instagram or SEo to create awareness of our brand - but nothing is more powerful than a personal, positive word-of-mouth reference from our members…You…our Adath israel ambassadors. So we hope you will jump enthusiastically onto the Adath Israel bandwagon if you don’t already have a seat and make a point of telling two friends who will tell two friends and so on about our wonderful Shul. The more we can shout from the rooftops about how special our Shul is, the more we hope to intensify our own members’ involvement in our programs while attracting new families from the neighborhood and beyond. At the same time, we know we aren’t perfect. There’s always things any Shul, any brand or any business can do better. Adath Israel is very much all three of those at once and we know we have work to do.So we’d love to hear from you. It’s nice to listen to the ‘good’, but we’re really interested in hearing about the ‘stuff’ you think we can do better to optimize your experience as a member. Please reach out at your convenience at [email protected] until the next Shofar, L’Shana Tovah from the entire office team at the Adath Israel and join me in thanking Honey Schein for 22 wonderful years and wishing her a happy retirement.

peace of Mind canada

peace of mind is an organization dedicated to facilitating emotional and psychological support for released IDF elite combat soldiers who have undergone difficult battle situations. The POM program is an exceptional opportunity for Adath Israel to show its support for Israel, and has a long-lasting positive impact on the

soldiers as well as their host families. It is important to encourage our community to support this endeavour with generosity and love.

Through the peace of mind organization, Adath Israel will be hosting a unit of elite combat soldiers who undergo months of therapy which culminates in a trip abroad for one week, from march 31 - april 7, 2019.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the shul community to show our love of Israel and our solidarity with the soldiers. We are looking for families to host a pair of soldiers in their home for the week.

There will be a Congregational Shabbat Dinner on April 5th.

Since the program’s inception, over 60 groups have been hosted in Jewish communities in the uK, Canada, and the united States. Another 100 groups are on the waiting list.

We want to balance our desire for our children to make Jewish connections with the confidence that our child is prepared for Kindergarten. Here are some reasons to choose our Preschool.

1. The Jewish experience that we give to our children become familiar and enjoyable and preschoolers will share these experiences. The connection between home and school is valued at Adath Israel and benefits learning. 2. Exposing children to a different language, Hebrew songs, holidays and prayers give them an advantage in their future academics.3. When children bring home holiday crafts, it often inspires parents to participate in traditions and practices and reinforces our Jewish connection.4. Friendships are formed and there is the opportunity to know other families who have the same priorities of education for their children.5. You become part of a larger community which celebrates Jewish life and values their Jewish heritage.

We are proud of 10 years of excellence in producing outstanding and integrated Judaic and early years curriculum. I welcome the opportunity to take you on a tour and talk about what makes our school the right place for your children.Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy sweet New Year, Wendy Steinberg Himmel, Preschool Program Director [email protected]

coNgREgatIoNal school tIME: a bIggER challENgE thaN EvER?

Just admit it: you thought computers would give you more free time, didn’t you? That’s not happening anytime soon. So it’s time to talk

about where does Jewish education time fit into busy family lives. Fact: being a knowledgeable “average” Jew requires an impressively deep skill set. Think of Friday night. There are blessings, some quite long, over candles, wine and bread. Even the abbreviated Birkhat HaMazon (Grace after Meals) requires considerable Hebrew reading skill. Navigating the haggadah at Pesach without mumbling distantly remembered tunes also requires decoding lots of Hebrew letters that many of us weren’t quite sure of at Hebrew school. And i don’t need to tell you about Shabbat or High Holy Day services.Fact: becoming a bar or bat mitzvah requires a dizzying array of skills that we regularly expect our kids to grasp. Never mind singing when their voices are changing and they are petrified (well, most of them!) of performing in front of family and peers. They need to read from the Torah in a script that has no vowels and even looks different than the one they learned in Hebrew school. Depending on the day, there are many additional prayers or a haftarah. All these must be chanted properly, pronounced clearly and accurately, and learned very in less than a year. But it can’t be done well or without considerable anxiety unless the b’nai mitzvah can easily decode the Hebrew texts.Acquiring this knowledge base takes time.

chIlDRENFor some students, there is day school. For those who don’t want that option, Adath israel Congregational School is the place to be. our program is taught by charismatic, loving, knowledgeable and engaged professionals, enhanced by technology and the charm of our Shinshinim. It is full of the music used to teach prayers and songs and further connect our students to Judaism and israel, and make them feel comfortable in shul and at our Shabbat and holy day tables. We ensure that all students can read comfortably before they become b’nai mitzvah. These skills require an investment of time. All this crucial inculcation of values and skills can’t be merely injected. We run a two day per week program because, quite frankly, one day a week is not sufficient. As we know from watching our children become adept at sports, repetition and modelling are keys to success. Skills, however innate in some of us, need to be nurtured. And Judaism, so precious to all of us, is far more than a mere collection of skills. But without these skills, our children will find it challenging to connect to a rich heritage and history that we very much want them to acquire, relate to, and continue with. It’s easy to register for our school online at our newly updated website: www.adathisrael.com But I would love to show you around personally! And don’t worry if the school year has started; our teachers are adept at catching students up. i look forward to hearing from you and wish all of you a Shanah Tovah full of blessings. something old & something new

By Claudette Edghill and Robert BesunderCo-Chairs, High Holy Days Committee

The High Holy Days will start at sunset on September 9th when we usher in Rosh Hashanah, but the High Holy Days Committee works year

round to ensure that there are meaningful services and experiences for all of our congregation during the holidays. At the end of the High Holy Days, during Sukkoth, we read from Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), where we are told “there is nothing new under the sun” – while the High Holy Days services will in many ways be very familiar, there are some exciting new additions to the services, and we hope that you will find something new under the sun for the upcoming holidays. This year’s High Holy Days will be our first with our new Senior Rabbi, Adam Cutler. Rabbi Cutler has spent many hours meeting with members of the congregation, and also meeting with the professional staff and various Committees, getting to know about the traditions at Adath israel, and also sharing his experiences with us. We are certain that those who have the chance to pray together with Rabbi Cutler over the holidays, and to speak with him, will find the experience meaningful. We all extend a warm welcome to Rabbi Cutler. The various services are described in more detail in the High Holy Days Guide, which is included in this issue of the Shofar – it will also be mailed to you with your ticket package. We recommend that you read through the Guide to choose the services that best meet your needs. The services in the main Sanctuary and combined Tobias and granovsky Halls are geared for adults, and for older children who are able to appreciate a traditional synagogue service. As was the case last year, however, we will continue to welcome children of all ages in these services. If you are bringing children into these services, it is important that you ensure that proper decorum is maintained at all times. There are other services available if your children cannot sit through these two services. The service in the Main Sanctuary is an elegant traditional service, officiated by Rabbi Adam Cutler (Rabbi David Seed will officiate on the second day of Rosh Hashanah), with Cantor Stein accompanied by the Israeli Kol Rina Choir for the Torah and Musaf services and the evening services on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidrei and Neilah. The Main Sanctuary fills to capacity; arriving early is important if you want to sit together with your family or friends. The ushers are instructed to fill all empty seats as the hall

hIgh holy Daysfills quickly, and holding seats for others is not permitted. The service in the Tobias/Granovsky halls is officiated by Rabbi David Seed (Rabbi Cutler will officiate on the second day of Rosh Hashanah), and led by Cantor Lipa Glantz, who once again will be visiting from Israel. Like the Main Sanctuary this is a full service, but more participatory. The congregation sings along with Cantor Glantz as he chants the traditional melodies of the High Holy Days.Sermons in both services are given on the various days by Rabbis Cutler and Seed. Neilah services at the conclusion of Yom Kippur will be held in both halls.Adath Israel offers various other services that are open to all family members, regardless of age.Returning to Adath israel this year is Rabbi Howard Markose, who will be leading the service in the benjamin and Fanny greenspoon Hall. Rabbi Markose incorporates commentary and stories to enhance the prayers, and to deepen your understanding of the High Holy Days. This is a complete, traditional service, with full Torah reading, priestly blessing, and Yizkor on Yom Kippur. While the service is appropriate for all members and their families, it is especially suitable for families with teen and college/university age children. Some of our members who have attended services in the Greenspoon Hall found the traffic across the bimah (in order for participants to access the exit) to be distracting. This year we are going to move the bimah to the opposite wall of the room, and we believe that this will help enhance the decorum of the service. We are pleased to announce the very popular “Stroller Service” is back in the chapel this year. It is a wonderful experience for families with babies, toddlers and very young children in preschool. A special thank you is extended to ilana orrelle, a kindergarten teacher at Associated Hebrew Schools, for her many years of excellent work in this service – Ilana and her family will be returning to israel, however, and she will be missed. We are excited to have mark weinstock join us this year to lead this service. Mark is an award-winning singer-songwriter and children’s entertainer. Mark will be building on the foundations built by Ilana for this wonderful service, and will be bringing a wealth of experience, talent and exciting ideas to carry on the tradition that so many families look forward to on the High Holy Days.Michael Ferman is returning to lead the young family

25

service in the Jacob Ulrich Hall. This service is intended for families with young children in kindergarten through grade four. it is an abbreviated service, with traditional High Holy Day prayers and Torah reading, enhanced with songs, stories, plays, and discussion.Yoelit Lipinsky has once again put together an exciting program for children aged three through ten in the Jacob pascal School wing. Yoelit and her team of youth leaders are well-trained in the care and education of children. Yoelit has gone to extraordinary efforts to ensure the safety of the children and to provide an engaging High Holy Day experience for them. Parents will receive a copy of the schedule of activities when they drop off their child so they can see what their children will be doing and learning, and also to make sure they pick up their children at an appropriate time. Healthy snacks will be provided, as well as a light lunch for children who are not fasting on Yom Kippur.

As for any Shabbat or Yom Tov, all people in the synagogue should observe the sanctity of the occasion through appropriate modest attire, and by refraining from using any electronic devices in the synagogue, including cellular telephones, tablets or any writing implements (pens, markers, crayons, etc.).Adath Israel offers High Holy Day experiences that are

suited to every member of our congregation. The various services build upon and respect

the traditions that you and your family have come to enjoy, while also trying to reflect the changing needs of our congregation. With some new faces joining the Adath Israel family, we know that this

year’s High Holy Days will be meaningful and engaging, a blend of something old and

something new.On behalf of the High Holy Days Committee, we

want to extend our wishes to every member of the congregation for a happy and sweet New Year.

adath Israel (of cuba)

For several years, our Adath israel has had a relationship with Adath Israel of Cuba through our member, Sydney Fisher, who travels there yearly

to lend them comfort and support. Through our Humanitarian Fund, we enable Syd to help those who attend the synagogue with a meal and fund some of their other needs. (To give you a picture of the financial situation of our Jewish brothers and sisters in Havana, Adath israel has around 115 members who pay a token membership fee of about $1.00 yearly. The average salary is $15 a month and the old age pension is approximately $6.00 monthly.)Adath Israel members receive a modest snack after morning and evening services and a more substantial meal after Friday evening and Shabbat morning services,

generally the best meals they have during the week. Our donation and those of other congregations and individuals makes a substantial difference in their lives. We received the following note from the congregation signed from its vice-president: “We are deeply grateful to you for your donation which you sent to us with our brother Sydney Fisher. With this money which we received, we can continue providing for the Cuban Jewish families which attend services. As well, there are many sick and elderly people unable to attend the service. We visit their homes and deliver baskets of food. With the bankrupt economy under which we live, the donations which we receive from abroad like yours, permits us to carry on. By your continued support over these many years, saving your Cuban brothers is a great mitzvah. May you all be blessed.”

They Gave Life...

Nearly 60 years ago, 60 leaders had the foresight and commitment to build a new Adath Israel in what was then the northern outskirts of Toronto. Rabbi Erwin Schild called it nothing less than a “magnificent triumph of courage and vision” that gave life to the thriving congregation we are today.

we Give STrenGTh...

Today our congregation numbers more than 1,800 families, making it one of the largest Conservative synagogues in North America. We have beautiful facilities and much to be proud of, but in the end we are only as strong as our weakest link. Those before us had the wisdom and understanding to provide for us. It is now our turn to provide for others. Please do your part to give strength - Ko’ach - to Adath Israel!

We all know about giving in multiples of Chai. This year’s Annual Campaign is focused on giving Ko’ach to our congregation.

Ko’ach is the Hebrew word for strength. Its numeric value of kaf-chet is 28.

We call on EvERy member to play a role in keeping Adath Israel strong. Support this year’s Annual Campaign with a gift in a multiple of Ko’ach to help keep membership affordable for families and provide vital funding for year round programming.

“Its nearly impossible to fathom, but

my father guaranteed a loan for the shul worth double the value of

his house to ensure the success of the shul. He and other leaders of Adath Israel understood the importance of synagogue life and the responsibility of providing for

future generations, even at a great personal sacrifice”

additional InformationYom Kippur is a described by the Torah as a day in which we afflict our souls. The Mishna, the earliest stratum of Jewish law, lists five abstentions that fulfill our obligation for affliction. They are eating and drinking, bathing, applying oils to one’s body, wearing shoes, and conjugal relations. The prohibition against wearing shoes was later restricted to those made of leather. Individuals attending services at Adath israel on Yom Kippur are strongly encouraged to follow the practice set forth in the Mishna and carried forward throughout Jewish history by wearing non-leather footwear.

Please remember, as for any Shabbat or Yom Tov, all people in the Synagogue should observe the sanctity of the occasion through appropriate modest attire. The use of electronic devices is strictly prohibited in the building during Holy Days.

Our Synagogue is able to offer a High Holy Day experience that is suited to every member of our congregation, regardless of age, family size, and preference for style of prayer. Although the array of services can seem bewildering at first, we hope that this guide will help find the right place for you and your family. In fact, we hope you attend more than one service over the High Holy Days, so you can find out which one provides the most engaging and spiritual experience for yourself.

Simchat Torah is a time when we at Adath Israel recognize four individuals through the ceremonies marking the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle. The first honour, titled Chatan Torah or “Bridegroom of the Torah”, is called for the reading

of the last section of the Torah. The second honouree, Chatan Beresheet or “Bridegroom of the Beginning”, starts a new cycle with the reading of the opening chapters of Genesis (Bereisheet). We will also honour two women with the designation of, Eishet Chayil Torah or “Woman of Valor of the Torah”, and Eishet Chayil Beresheet or “Woman of Valor of the Beginning”. The women’s honours parallel the men’s, allowing us also to celebrate those women in our congregation whose contributions, achievements and service mirror the values of the Torah. The congregation is invited to join us for lunch with our Honourees following services. Please see page 33 for more details.

perry Zosky Chatan TorahPerry has been the Financial Manager with Adath Israel for the last 26 years. Perry has had the privilege to have worked alongside Rabbi Steven Saltzman ז”ל, Cantor A. Eliezer Kirshblum and Baruch Hoffman. He cherished his friendships with them and

appreciated having their support throughout the years.

Not only is Perry dedicated to his job, he also had the honour of being married to his wife Lori of 20 years by both Rabbi Saltzman ז”ל and Cantor Kirshblum. Subsequently, Perry also celebrated both of his daughters', Melanie and Lesley, Baby Namings and Bat Mitzvahs at Adath israel.

Working at Adath israel has also given him the opportunity to make great friends with the clergy, staff and many of the congregants. Perry looks forward to many more years at Adath israel and is proud to be a Simchat Torah honouree.

Stephanie kepecs Eishet Chayil Beresheet

Stephanie Kepecs, together with her family, have been members of Adath Israel Congregation for

over 30 years. She is the founder of and inspiration behind ‘Golden Hands’, one of Toronto’s largest Jewish crafting groups.Stephanie embodies many values

that the Torah teaches us and they can be seen through her volunteering at Adath and other organizations. She sets goals for not only herself, but those that she works with. The personal connection she is able to develop and share with many is special and genuine. She instills confidence in others to try new things and be better individuals. One of Stephaine’s brainchild projects is the grade 2 Challah cover project at Associated Hebrew Schools. Together with others that she encouraged to volunteer, more than 300 beautiful keepsakes have been created by the children. Stephanie has donated 3 Torah covers, 3 chuppahs and bimah covers for both the Sanctuary and Chapel at Adath Israel.

Zelda Jonas Eishet Chayil Torah

Zelda has been a member of Adath Israel for 57 years. Zelda and her husband

Harry (ז”ל) joined Adath Israel with their children, Ellen, Steven, David and Sheri. Adath israel has always been a very important part of the Jonas family life, and it has followed through with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their children

attended our Congregational school, had their b’nai mitzvot in the shul, and Ellen (to Neil Melman) and David (to Robin Jonas) were married in the shul. All their grandchildren, Aaron, ora, Sam, and Melanie had their b’nai mitzvot at Adath israel. Additionally, her granddaughter Ora (to Ryan Leopold) was married in the shul and her great grandchildren Dylan and Amelia were named at Adath israel. Zelda is also grandmother to Rabbi Aaron & Elisa and great-grandmother to Jordan and Hannah in Chicago.Zelda and Harry (ז”ל) became active in Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and later Club L’Chaim; believing that being involved was a rewarding and meaningful way to give back to the shul and community. Zelda helped run the Sisterhood gift shop for over 10 years. She was also a dedicated volunteer at Baycrest.Zelda & Harry (ז”ל) made many close friends at the synagogue. She looks forward to continuing her close personal ties with Adath israel and is honoured to be chosen as Eishet Chayil Torah.

allan Noss Chatan BeresheetBorn and raised in Toronto, Allan, an accountant by profession has been an Adath Israel member for over 60 years. He was married in our Shul by Rabbi Schild and his children celebrated their B'nai Mitzvah with us.

Allan is best descibed by his many friends as being "colourful".He is a regular at the daily second Minyan with a reserved seat at breakfast replete with private stock scmaltz herring.Allan took it upon himself many years ago to familiarize the B'nai Mitzvah during services with the where, when and what was going to happen around the Bimah. He described the orchestration that would take place and where the Bar/Bat Mitzvah would be at each point. Allan was the Kaddish Zoger honouree in 2015 and is extremely grateful and touched by this latest Simchat Torah special honour. He was overheard saying,"Very nice, but what took so long?"

Simchat Torah, "Rejoicing in the Torah," marks the completion of the annual cycle of weekly Torah readings. Each week in shul we publicly read a few chapters from the Torah, starting with Genesis Ch. 1 and working our way to Deuteronomy 34. on Simchat Torah, we read the last Torah portion,

then proceed immediately to the first chapter of Genesis, reminding us that the Torah is a circle and never ends. This is a time of great celebration. We march around the synagogue with seven processions (hakafot) carrying the Sifrei Torah with plenty of high-spirited singing and dancing.

on behalf of Adath Israel Brotherhood, I would like to wish all congregants a Happy Rosh Hashanah, an easy fast, and a joyous Sukkot.

The beginning of a new year is a time for us to think about how we can be better in the next year. That is true not just for us as individuals, but also for us as Brotherhood members.A program where we’d like to be better is the distribution of Yellow Candles for Holocaust memorial. They are lit on Erev Yom Hashoah which occurs just after Pesach. While we make Yellow Candles available in the Shul, there are many members who may not be available or may have difficulty picking them up. In addition, while we often hand out the candles after Yizkor services on the eighth day of Pesach, we cannot do that in 2019 as it occurs on a Shabbat. Therefore, for 5779, we would like to deliver Yellow Candles directly to the homes of as many congregants as possible. As you can imagine, that is a significant undertaking for a congregation as big as ours. For us to succeed in this endeavour, we will need a large group of volunteers to help deliver the candles. Each volunteer will be given a list of addresses for deliveries. The lists will be developed geographically so the addresses will be close together.in June, while in Amsterdam, i had the opportunity to visit the Anne Frank House. It serves as a testimonial to the effects of the Holocaust on one family and small group of people. Like the Yellow Candles program, it helps ensure we will never forget. If you are able to help deliver Yellow Candles in March/April of 2019, please contact me at my email address or phone number below. We know this is early to ask, but the earlier we know the better prepared we will be to work out the logistics. The more volunteers we get, the more homes we will be able to cover, meaning more Yellow Candles will be lit.Thank you for helping out. May everyone enjoy health and happiness in 5779!Gary [email protected]

with charitable organizations like ouT oF THE CoLD, BiKuR CHoLiM and vE'AHAvTA that provide assistance to the homeless and those in the hospital. We organize holiday programs to CAMH, and of course, we always appreciate help on our annual Mitzvah Day!

BIkuR CHolIM is the mitzvah of visiting those who are ill or homebound, whether in nursing homes, retire-ment facilities or in their own homes. The clergy will often visit members to give them words of comfort and support on a regular basis if they are made aware. However, in this new year, Adath Israel, through its Chesed Committee, would like to expand its efforts to reach out to more members and their families by creating a Bikur Cholim committee.

Under the supervision of Rabbi Seed, we are asking for volunteers who will be trained to help those who would like to fulfill this import mitzvah by making a visit. No prior experience is necessary, only a desire to reach out to someone who is looking for a bit of friendship and caring. This is not a large commitment of time, only of heart. If you have questions or are interested, please contact Rabbi Seed or our member, Carolyn Wagman, at [email protected]. You will be doing a mitzvah for someone while receiving so much more in return!

chEsED coMMIttEEmITZvaH day 2018

Thanks!i would like to thank all the volunteers,

staff, members of the Clergy, those who gave donations and who worked so hard

to make Mitzvah Day a great event! In just a few hours, piles of clothing were sorted

into over 30 bags and donated to charities that support the homeless and money for charity was raised through

our Jeopardy quiz. More than 150 gift bags filled with toiletries, costume jewellery and scarves were assembled and donated to women's shelters, nearly 200 sandwiches

and food packages were donated to Ve'ahavta, and a number of letters of support were written to IDF soldiers.

Thanks again for all the work. Save the date for mitzvah day 2019 - Sunday, march 3.

To be part of the Mitzvah Day Subcommittee please email [email protected]
