What Colors Make Up Sunlight?

1.

Glue a piece of white paper onto the inside bottom of a shoe box.

2.

Place the box on its side near a window or outside in a sunny area.

3.

Hold a mirror in front of the open side of the box. Adjust the mirror until it reflects sunlight onto the paper in the box.

CAUTION:

Do not direct the sunlight into your eyes.

4.

Place a prism between the mirror and the box. Adjust the location of the prism so that sunlight passes through the prism.

5.

Describe what you see on the paper in the box.

The year was 1883. T. W. Engelmann, a German biologist, wasat work in his laboratory. He peered into the microscope atsome algae on a slide. The microscope had a prism locatedbetween the light source and the algae. As Engelmann watchedthe algae, he saw gas bubbles forming in the water aroundsome of the cells. Curiously, no gas bubbles formed aroundother cells. Although Engelmann did not know it at the time,his experiment provided a clue about how light is involved inphotosynthesis. To understand what Engelmann observed, youneed to know more about the nature of light.

7AeORGAN SYSTEMS

HOW DO CELLS, TISSUES AND ORGANS WORK TOGETHER?

When cells of the same type are grouped together they form a tissue. Di erent tissues are found grouped together in an organ.

1 L4 Name three tissues found in the heart.

Doctors in Ancient Egypt could see that organs were connected but did not understand how or why. For example, they thought that you breathed air into your lungs, your heart and all the tubes going to and from your heart. They could only examine the heart and its tubes in dead bodies when these organs were full of air, and so they thought that they always contained air.

Today we know that the heart and its tubes carry blood around the body. The tubes are called blood vessels and work with the heart to form an organ system called the circulatory system.

An organ system is a group of organs that work together. Other organ systems in humans include the locomotor (muscles and bones), digestive, urinary, breathing and nervous systems.

Organ systems in plantsPlants also have organs made up of tissues.

Plant organs work together in organ systems too. For example, the water transport system takes water from the ground up to the leaves. Water is always owing through this organ system because leaves constantly lose water (by evaporation).

Calculating the total energy converted by an applianceThe power of an appliance (P) tells you how much energy it converts each second. This means that the total energy (E) converted by an appliance is equal to its power multiplied by the length of time (in seconds) the appliance is being used.

energy, E (in joules) = power, P (in watts) × time, t (in seconds) E = P × t

since P = I × V E = I × V × t

Worked example Example 1

If a 230 V television takes a current of 3 A, calculate its power.

P = I × V

P = 3 A × 230 V

P = 690 W

Worked example Example 2

Calculate the correct fuse that should be used for a 230 V, 1 kW electric hair dryer (1k W = 1000 W).

P = I × V

I = PV

I = 1000 W230 V

I = 4.3 A

The correct fuse for this hair dryer is therefore a 5 A fuse.

If an examination question asks for the formula for calculating power, voltage or current, always give the actual equation (such as P = I × V ). You may not be awarded a mark if you just draw the triangle.

Alternating current and direct currentThe mains electricity supply provides alternating current (ac), which means that the flow of electricity is constantly changing direction. This is because of the way that electricity generators work – you will find out more about this in Chapter 22. Cells and batteries provide direct current (dc), where the current is always in the same direction. Figure 7.15 shows how the voltage of an ac supply compares with a dc supply.

Figure 7.15 How the voltage of an ac supply compares with that of a dc supply.

Worked example Example 3

Calculate the energy converted by a 60 W bulb that is turned on for a) 20 s, and b) 5 min.

a) E = P × t

E = 60 W × 20 s

E = 1200 J or 1.2 kJ

b) E = P × t

E = 60 W × 5 × 60 s

E = 18 000 J or 18 kJ

Figure 7.10 The switch in a circuit should be in the live wire.

Earth wires and double insulation

Many appliances have a metal casing. This should be connected to the earth wire so that if the live wire becomes frayed or breaks and comes into contact with the casing the earth wire provides a low-resistance path for the current. This current is likely to be large enough to blow the fuse and turn the circuit off. Without the earth wire anyone touching the casing of the faulty appliance would receive a severe electric shock as current passed through them to earth (Figure 7.8).

Some modern appliances now use casings made from an insulator such as plastic rather than from metal. If all the electrical parts of an appliance are insulated in this way, so that they cannot be touched by the user, the appliance is said to have double insulation. Appliances that have double insulation use a two-wire flex. There is no need for an earth wire.

Switches

Switches in mains circuits should always be included in the live wire so that when the switch is open no electrical energy can reach an appliance. If the switch is included in the neutral wire, electrical energy can still enter an appliance, and could possibly cause an electric shock (Figure 7.10).

Sub-atomic particlesA hundred years or so after Dalton rst proposed his model, experiments showed that atoms are themselves made up from smaller or sub-atomic particles. The nucleus of an atom is made up of protons and neutrons. As they both reside in the nucleus of the atom they are sometimes called nucleons. Both the protons and neutron have almost the same mass as a hydrogen nucleus and account for the most of the mass of the atom. Electrons, which have a charge equal and opposite to that of the proton, occupy the space in the atom outside of the nucleus.

These particles are described by their relative masses and charges which have no units. The absolute masses and charges of these fundamental particles are given in Section 4 of the IB data booklet.

incident alphaparticles

Figure 2.3 Rutherford’s model of the atom accounts for the experimental observations. Most of the alpha particles pass straight through but a small number collide with and are repelled by a positively charged nucleus.

Our knowledge of the nuclear atom came from Rutherford’s experiments with the relatively newly discovered alpha particles. Scientifi c knowledge grows as new evidence is gathered as a result of new technologies and instrumentation.

The description of sub-atomic particles offered here is suffi cient to understand chemistry but incomplete. Although the electron is indeed a fundamental particle, we now know that the protons and neutrons are both themselves made up from more fundamental particles called quarks. We also know that all particles have anti-particles. The positron is the anti-particle of an electron; it has the same mass but has an equal and opposite positive charge. When particles and anti-particles collide they destroy each other and release energy in the form of high-energy photons called gamma rays. Our treatment of sub-atomic particles is in line with principle of Occam’s razor, which states that theories should be as simple as possible while maximizing explanatory power.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is run by twenty European Member States, with involvements from scientists from many other countries. It operates the world’s largest particle physics research centre, including particle accelerators and detectors used to study the fundamental constituents of matter.

PET (positron-emission tomography) scanners give three-dimensional images of tracer concentration in the body, and can be used to detect cancers. The patient is injected with a tracer compound labelled with a positron-emitting isotope. The positrons collide with electrons after travelling a short distance (≈1 mm) within the body. Both particles are destroyed with the production of two photons, which can be collected by the detectors surrounding the patient, and used to generate an image.

UtilizationUtilization boxes support the new curriculum aims to provide synoptic links to other areas of science, as well as examples of a variety of real-world applications.

Nature of scienceCentral to the new curriculum is an emphasis on the nature of science. Margin boxes promote an understanding of the proof and justification of scientific knowledge and the scientific world view.

Following his example, the formation of water (described above) can be written using modern notation:

2H + 1O → H2O

But what are atoms really like? It can be useful to think of them as hard spheres (Figure 2.1), but this tells us little about how the atoms of different elements differ. To

understand this, it is necessary to probe deeper.

Figure 2.1 A model of a water molecule made from

two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Dalton’s picture

of the atom as a hard ball is the basis behind the molecular

models we use today.

Figure 2.2 Thomson’s ‘plum pudding’ model of the atom.

The electrons (yellow) are scattered in a positively

charged sponge-like substance (pink).

Dalton’s atomic theory was not accepted when it was fi rst proposed. Many scientists, such as Kelvin for example, considered it as nothing more than as a useful fi ction which should not be taken too seriously. Over time, as the supporting evidence grew, there was a general shift in thinking which led to its widespread acceptance. These revolutions in understanding or ‘paradigm shifts’ are characteristic of the evolutions of scientifi c thinking.

Atoms contain electronsThe rst indication that atoms were destructible came at the end of the 19th century when the British scientist J. J. Thomson discovered that different metals produce a stream of negatively charged particles when a high voltage is applied across two electrodes. As these particles, which we now know as electrons, were the same regardless of the metal, he suggested that they are part of the make-up of all atoms.

The properties of electrons, or cathode rays as they were fi rst called, could only be investigated once powerful vacuum pumps had been invented – and once advances had been made in the use and understanding of electricity and magnetism. Improved instrumentation and new technology have often been the drivers for new discoveries.

As it was known that the atom had no net charge, Thomson pictured the atom as a ‘plum pudding’, with the negatively charged electrons scattered in a positively charged sponge-like substance (Figure 2.2).

Rutherford’s model of the atomErnest Rutherford (1871–1937) and his research team working at Manchester University in England, tested Thomson’s model by ring alpha particles at a piece of gold foil. We now know that alpha particles are helium nuclei, composed of two protons and two neutrons, with a positive charge. They are emitted by nuclei with too many protons to be stable. If Thomson’s model was correct, the alpha particles should either pass straight through or get stuck in the positive ‘sponge’. Most of the alpha particles did indeed pass straight through, but a very small number were repelled and bounced back. Ernest Rutherford recalled that ‘It was quite the most incredible thing that has happened to me. It was as if you had red a (artillery) shell at a piece of tissue paper and it came back and hit you.’

The large number of unde ected particles led to the conclusion that the atom is mainly empty space. Large de ections occur when the positively charged alpha particles collide with and are repelled by a positively charged nucleus (Figure 2.3). The fact that only a small number of alpha particles bounce back suggests that the nucleus is very small.

When Geiger and Marsden reported to Rutherford that they had seen nothing unusual with most of the alpha particles passing straight through the gold and a small number being defl ected by small angles he asked them to look and see if any of the alpha particles had bounced back. This was a very unusual suggestion to make at the time, with little logical justifi cation. What is the role of intuition in the pursuit of scientifi c knowledge?

14The Behavior of Gases

Hot and Cold Balloons 1. Work with a partner. You will need two

round non-latex balloons, a bowl of ice water, and a bowl of hot water.

2. Blow up both balloons to the same size.3. Predict what will happen if you put one

balloon in each bowl.4. Then put one balloon in the cold water

and one in the hot water. Were your predictions correct?

Form a Hypothesis Explain why you think the balloons changed as they did.

Take a video field trip with the Untamed Science crew as they talk with experts who are working on new ways to keep fruits and vegetables fresher longer.

Aviators known as cluster balloonists rise above the clouds by harnessing themselves to balloons filled with helium gas.

KINETIC THEORY

Essential Questions:1. How do gases respond to changes in

pressure, volume, and temperature?2. Why is the ideal gas law useful even

though ideal gases do not exist ?

BIGIDEA

Under PressureJust after 2 p.m., Becki completes her eighth scuba dive over a four-day period off the coast of Belize. After the dive, she feels fine.

A few hours later at dinner, Becki feels tired. She thinks that her fatigue is probably due to the many hours she had spent swimming during her vacation. But she also begins to feel itchy and notices a blotchy rash on her skin. Did she get stung by a sea creature during her last dive? Becki decides to go back to her hotel room to get some rest. As she is walking, she begins to feel severe pains in the joints of her arms and legs and feels achy all over her body. Becki feels like she is coming down with the flu, but she realizes that her symptoms are related to her dives. What is wrong with Becki?

CHEMYSTERY Have students read over the CHEMystery. Connect the CHEMystery to the Big Idea of kinetic theory by explaining that the behavior

of gases can be predicted. For example, as the pressure of a sample of gas at a constant temperature decreases, volume increases.

Ask What do you think happens to the pressure of the gases that Becki breathes in as she dives and then surfaces? (The pressure increases as she dives and decreases as she surfaces.)As a hint, tell students that the pressure of the gases that Becki breathes in is the same as the pressure outside her body. As Becki dives deeper, the pressure outside her body increases. As she rises to the surface, the pressure decreases.

Introduce the Chapter

Introduce chapter concepts by having students work through the Foundations for Learning activity. Depending upon the availability of supplies, you may present this activity as a demonstration. Ask students to write their predictions and hypothesis in their notebooks.

MATERIALS Two non-latex balloons, 2 large bowls, ice, hot water

EXPECTED OUTCOME The balloon placed in hot water will expand, and the balloon placed in cold water will shrink.

Understanding by DesignIntroduce the BIGIDEA and Essential Questions to students. Lead a short class discussion to help students start connecting these ideas with chapter content.

Ask Compared with solids and liquids, what’s unique about the distance between gas particles? (Gas par-ticles are much farther apart than particles in solids and liquids.)

Ask How might this characteristic of gases affect a gas sample if there are changes in pressure, volume, or temperature? (Accept all reasonable responses.)

PERFORMANCE GOALSAt the end of Chapter 14, students will be able to answer the essential questions by applying their knowledge of gas laws. Students will also be able to use the ideal gas law to calculate unknown values.

A-1, A-2, B-2, B-5, E-2, F-1

Focus on ELLCONTENT AND LANGUAGE Explain that the words property, gas, and law each have a common and a scientific meaning. Divide the class into three groups and have each group complete a Frayer Model for one word—with a definition, characteristics, an example, and a nonexample. Have each group teach the word to the class.

Beginning Low Proficiency Have students create a symbol or drawing to represent each word. If they can, have them create a native language definition.

Beginning High Proficiency Ask ELLs to write each word and introduce it to the class by pointing and saying it aloud.

Intermediate Low/High Proficiency Have students brainstorm examples and non-examples and present them to the class.

Advanced Low/High Proficiency Students should write each definition, present it to the class, and explain how the examples represent the word.

Context-led resources:Salters-nuffield Advanced biology and Salters-Horners Advanced physicsSalters-nuffield Advanced biology (SNAB) and Salters-Horners Advanced physics (SHAP) are complete courses with their own distinctive philosophy. Developed by the SHAP and SNAB teams at the University of York Science Education Group and Nuffield Curriculum Centre, they cover biology and physics through real-life contexts, combining the key concepts underpinning science today with the opportunity to gain the wider skills that biologists and physicists now need.

Concept-led resources:Edexcel GCE biology, Chemistry and physicsThe concept-led approach to Edexcel GCE Sciences provides students with an in-depth understanding of the principles covered whilst studying a particular topic. It usually begins with the study of the theories and models of the individual sciences and finishes with an exploration of their practical applications.

1 Muscle paralysis is common in many cases of poisoning, often as a result of interference with chemical transmission from the motor neurones to the muscles at the neuromuscular junctions. Studies of venomous snakes, such as the Prugasti krait (Bungarus fasciatus) have played a part in the investigation of this chemical transmission.

(a) Describe the normal sequence of events that occurs within a muscle fibre after stimulation of a neuromuscular junction. (5)

(b) Bungaratoxin can be isolated from the venom of the Prugasti krait. In minute amounts, it can cause paralysis of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles by its effects at synapses. Suggest how bungaratoxin causes these effects. (3)

Unit 5: Exercise and Coordination5

Muscles, joints and movementBones can move in relation to one another at joints. Different types of joint allow different degrees of movement. Ligaments are made of elastic connective tissue. They hold bones together and restrict the amount of movement possible at a joint. Tendons are cords of non-elastic fi brous tissue that anchor muscles to bones.

Skeletal muscles are those attached to bones and are normally arranged in antagonistic pairs. This means that there are pairs of muscles which pull in opposite directions. Flexors contract to fl ex, or bend a joint, e.g. biceps in the arm; extensors contract to extend, or straighten a joint, e.g. triceps in the arm.

Each skeletal muscle is a bundle of millions of muscle cells called fi bres. Each muscle cell may be several centimetres long and contains several nuclei. It contains many myofi brils which are made up of the fi brous proteins actin (thin fi laments) and myosin (thick fi laments). The cell surface membrane of a muscle cell is known as the sarcolemma. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is a specialised endoplasmic reticulum which can store and release calcium ions. The cytoplasm inside a muscle cell is called the sarcoplasm. The specialised synapse (see page 63, Topic 8) between neurones and muscle cells is called the neuromuscular junction.

The sliding fi lament theory of muscle contraction

Remember that muscles can’t stretch themselves. It is the pull created by the contraction of the antagonistic muscle that stretches a muscle when it is in a relaxed state.

The prefi x myo- refers to ‘muscle’ and sarco- to ‘fl esh’ (i.e. muscle) so specialist terms starting with myo- or sarco- will refer to structures within muscles.

The functional unit of a muscle fi bre is called a sarcomere. When the muscle contracts the thin actin fi laments move between the thick myosin fi laments, shortening the length of the sarcomere and therefore shortening the length of the muscle.

Examiner tip

Remember that transcription is copying and then you will remember which stage is which in protein synthesis. Transcription is copying the DNA code onto a piece of mRNA. At ribosomes this code is translated into a protein.

Figure 4 Scanning electron micrograph of translation:

Figure 5bacterium Escherichia coli: DNA (pink) transcription yields mRNA strands (green), which are immediately translated by ribosomes (blue)

Questions1 In which type of cell, prokaryote

protein synthesis to be faster?

2 What is the minimum number of different tRNA molecules that are needed for protein synthesis?

Glycogen in muscle cells can be broken down by an enzyme, glycogen phosphorylase. Glycogen can be synthesised by the enzyme, glycogen synthase. If both were to be happening at the same time, it would waste the cell’s energy, so there has to be a control mechanism to ‘make or break’ glycogen according to the cell’s needs.

Glycogen phosphorylase is activated by cAMP but inhibited by ATP and by glucose 6-P. cAMP binds to an allosteric site (not the active site) of the enzyme and causes it to change its shape and bring its previously hidden active site to a more exposed position. If ATP or G-6-P bind, then the shape changes back and the active site becomes buried into the molecule.

QuestionsA What do you think the effect of cAMP is on the activity of the enzyme glycogen

synthase and how do you think the effect is brought about?B What do you think the effect of G-6-P is on the activity of glycogen synthase?

By the end of this spread, you should be able to …

Describe, with the aid of diagrams, how the sequence of nucleotides within a gene is used to construct a polypeptide, including the roles of messenger RNA, transfer RNA and ribosomes.State that cyclic AMP activates proteins by altering their three-dimensional structure.

Translation is the second stage of protein synthesis, when the amino acids are assembled into a polypeptide. They are assembled into the sequence dictated by the sequence of codons (triplets of nucleotide bases) on the mRNA. The genetic code, copied from DNA into mRNA, is now translated into a sequence of amino acids. This chain of amino acids is a polypeptide. It happens at ribosomes, which may be free in the cytoplasm but many are bound to the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

RibosomesRibosomes are assembled in the nucleolus of eukaryote cells, from ribosomal RNA

The sequence of amino acids in a protein is critical because:

its three-dimensional shape and is held in that 3D shape by hydrogen or ionic bonds and hydrophobic interactions forming between the R groups of amino acids

of a protein is dependent upon its primary structure, and this primary sequence of

substrate molecules will no longer fit, or if a chloride ion channel protein in cell surface
