Message from the Vice-Chancellor

The respect and oneness with the Environment which is responsible for our own existence is native to our ethos.

Sardar Patel University, which is a planned fruition of the green educational town of Vallabh Vidyanagar out of

the rural resurgence project is a frontier University in the state of Gujarat in maintaining and nurturing the eco-

friendly environment and systems.

We are so attuned to the development of Environmental consciousness amongst youth that the education,

extension, training and research activities in almost all disciplines reflect the same in the work by faculty and the

students.

Sustainable Development has been the demand of the age. As such we have been working for the same since

inception, we shall further strengthen the efforts. While the UN has declared 2021-2030 as the decade of

Ecosystem restoration, we at Sardar Patel University have set up a Sustainable Innovative Education

and Development Cell. This cell will explore and implement innovative methods with which we can

conserve the Environment keeping appraised with the need of the modern developments.

I am happy to state that …

• about 11 buildings of the University are equipped with the roof top solar power generation system

connected to grid in last 5 years.

• We have about half a dozen water conserving and recharging cells on the campus.

• We have also taken care of energy conservation and clean air initiatives. An innovative, first of its kind in

the Country, a Small Wind generator was developed at our Physics Department in 2004.

• An another green belt in addition to the existing township, is created in the satellite township of our

Biosciences Department and Sports complex. The barren land in 2006 during the inception of the

Department in the new campus, was converted into a lushy green belt, rich in Biodiversity by the efforts

of the Faculty and Students.

• Our campus is humming with varied activities of formal, informal education and research to enhance the

Environment Quotient of our students, faculty and community.

I am humbled to say, we are on a Green March.

Introduction

➢ Transformation of the barren land Known as a Green Town of Gujarat state in India, Vallabh Vidyanagar was essentially created to develop a university township, which gave birth to Sardar Patel University in 1955. The founder of the township and the First Vice-Chancellor of the University, Shri Bhailalbhai Patel got

inspired from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to develop an educational township which is an integration

of rural natural surroundings and urban facilities. This was the project of rural regeneration of post independent India through education which created the first residential “Rural University” of the Country.

➢ Mission of the University Regeneration of rural Indian life with the application of the study and research in all the disciplines of knowledge in tune with the modern global developments

➢ Environmental Consciousness In the very roots of this University campus lie the seeds of preservation and oneness with the Environment. A well planned township having a green envelope of more than 80 species of trees planted on roadside; it has perhaps the highest number of trees in the state of Gujarat in such a small area. The town has the largest colony of rose-ringed parakeet; the last count in 2003-04 was of more than 63,000 parakeets (wiki details) The University has been pioneer in the issues addressing the Environmental crisis and has contributed significantly.

➢ Commitment towards Sustainable Development The Sardar Patel University is determined to continue its efforts of educating and training young minds in developing a higher consciousness to serve the Mother Nature. We have a vibrant mission to empower the society through eco-friendly solutions. We are committed to be the part of the innovative sustainable education and developmental activities of Government of India and also to work in tune with the guidelines of the United Nations.

THE BIOSCIENCES: A CAMPUS TO VISIT Prof. Ujjval Trivedi

Professor, Department of Biosciences, Sardar Patel University

The Post Graduate Department of Biosciences is one of the most active departments of Sardar Patel University, situated off campus on Bakrol-Vadtal road, approximately two and a half km. from main campus. The Department was shifted from main campus fifteen years ago into a new building constructed on a barren land spread over 30 acres, reclaimed through land filling. The shifting started in the year 2006 and was completed in 2007.

This campus, fifteen years ago, was a barren huge

ground, almost without a blade of grass. It had a three

storied building standing in the middle, conspicuously

visible from the main road. Today, it is a lush green

campus, with trees, shrubs, insects, birds, reptiles, all

forms of biodiversity. The campus development

initiative was taken up by Dr A S Reddy and supported

by all members of the department, past and present

students, with careful planning and several tree

plantation programs have transformed the

department in a decade and half. The diversity inside

the department has various diverse subjects and

outside has various diverse life forms.

The plants: The campus has more than 250 grown up

trees with a diversity of 89 different species.

This is unique in terms of species density because of careful planning and expertise of Dr. Reddy. Some tree

species include garmalo, palash, papal, kachnar, gulmohar, kadamb, rain tree etc.

Other than tree species, there are small plants, the herbs and shrubs. The flowering plants outdoors and indoors,

in kyara and pots make the campus look young and beautiful. Moreover, these plants attract birds and insects,

including butterflies.

Birds: A variety of birds visit the green campus. In last five year the department has

recorded more than 90 bird species. Other than

common birds like Bulbul, Myna, crows, babblers and pigeon the noted birds includer are birds like Jerdons leafbird, large cuckoo shrike, Indian Scops owl, migratory flycatchers, raptors like Oriental honey buzzard, Black kite, shikra, colourful birds like sunbirds, common Iora, woodpecker, yellow footed green pigeon, crow pheasant, and singing birds like tailorbird, Robins and Magpie.

Insects: Huge varieties of insect species have been noticed, especially in rainy season including flies, moths, spiders and butterflies. The records of

butterflies observed in last five year revealed about 70 species of different

types and forms including Swallowtails, brush footed, white and yellow tips and blues. The attractive one include Common crow, eggfly, common tiger, tawny costar, common jay, lemon and peacock pansy etc. Several blues and sunbeams and others recorded at different times include like forget me not, silver line, palmbob, skipper etc.

Special studies undertaken on spiders diversity recorded about 80 spider

species, which include jumping, orb weavers, ground runners, foliage

hunters. signature, wolf, lynx etc.

Some other life forms like mushrooms, langoors, squirrels, garden lizards, snakes also have membership.

Spectacled Cobra is a frequent visitor.

All these life forms along with Homo sapiens, coexist in harmony in the department. No untoward incidence has

occurred on either side, on this campus. Last but not the least, the campus has a small canteen and under

canopy of trees are placed some benches. It is worth a cup of tea here.

1) Agro-Economic Research Centre (AERC):

Ears and Eyes for the Ministry of Agriculture

Dr. S S Kalamkar Director and Professor

AERC as a part of University has now completed 60 glorious years (1961-2021). The Centre is located at the H.M. Patel Institute of Rural Development, Opp. Nandalaya Temple, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar 388120. In the same building, Department of Economics is housed on ground and first floor while AERC and CCS are working from second floor of the same building. This Centre was established in July 1961 at this University by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, New Delhi, India to cover the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. During these years, the Centre has emerged as a strong policy feedback centre of the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India due to hard work and strong commitment of the staff in the Centre. The focus of research effort in the initial stage was on comprehensive village surveys and resurveys in order to understand the process and direction of change at the village level. Subsequently, the emphasis of research has shifted to problem oriented studies. The Centre has by now completed 203 problem-oriented studies, 21 village surveys and 4 village resurveys. Most of these research projects have been taken up by Centre on the recommendation of the Government of India and State Governments of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Some of the projects have also been sponsored by other national and international organizations. During its long journey, the Centre has brought remarkable improvement in every aspect of research including methodological base of the studies. The studies have come out with useful findings and policy implications for agricultural and rural development of the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. While conducting the research work, Centre has also undertaken various nature supportive activities to fulfill its institutional social responsibility in order to safeguard the nature and soil, viz. installation of roof top solar power

SPU Estate is proactive for Environment Conservation practices Mr. Parag Vaidya, University Engineer

University Campus Area : 86 Acres, Total Roof Area : 1,40,012.59 sq.mtr. Our University is proactive for Environment Conservation practices. The University has 5 rain water harvesting tanks. In 2003, the first underground tank was constructed at Vice Chancellor’s Residence which stored 10,000 litres water harvested from the rain fall. Similarly, in the year 2014, same capacity underground tank of the same specification was provided at the Community Science Centre. The water stored is potable water and have been scientifically tested. Antifungal coating was applied while construction. Rain Water Harvesting: Roof and Non-roof

Water Recharge Well: In the year 2004, water recharge well was constructed at University staff colony and

University Guest House which harvest rain water of entire monsoon period. Due to this, the water table of the

bore at University colony and University campus water table is maintained and there is no shortage of water

during weak monsoon period. It has also helped to reduce the electricity bill due to constant ground water table

availability at shorter depth. In the year 2013, Estate section constructed water harvesting recharge well near

University Women Hostel No. 3. From the entire catchment area of the said hostel of approximately 5000 sq.ft.,

2,50,000 litres water has been harvested in the recharge cell. In 2019, the University has provided land

to the local Municipality for constructing another recharge well.

The University Estate section works on the principle of Community Outreach and any institute/ individual can

approach the Estate section for guidance regarding water harvesting/recharging procedure.

Natural Lighting and Air Cooling System at the Sport Complex: A unique Natural air cooling system operating on

solar system exists in the UV Sports building. 6 inch diameter PVC pipelines are installed along the Short Wall and

have been laid beneath 10 ft ground level and the outlet is left in the Basketball Court area which cools the Court

Area. The Hot air is lifted by the Turbo ventilators fitted at the Ceiling.

Commitment for Green Energy initiatives to Conserve the Environment

Er. Sulax Shah

Head, University Science and Instrumentation Centre

Having associated with this great green and rural university township since more than 4 decades, I have learnt and adopted to use technology for sustainable development. The main function of USIC is to extend repair and maintain facilities of all Instruments housed in the University and also maintaining the entire Electrification but we also develop some of our indigenous equipment for the use of our own researchers. The Main thrust is to engage ourselves to minimize the degradation to the best extent possible and conserve Energy using Green initiatives. Following are the highlights of our activities befitting the GoGreen campus movement.

1. Use of Eco-friendly Refrigerants

We encourage the use of eco-friendly refrigerants in the University to minimize the impact on Ozon layer depletion. The Air Conditioner models that we have installed in last couple of years include (i) Whirlpool Magic Cool (Inverter) and (ii) BlueStar Models: IC324YATU, IC318YBTU. All these are with Environmental and Ecofriendly refrigerant (R410A and R32). These ecofriendly refrigerants have zero Ozone depleting substances ensuring fast cooling through better heat transfer.

2. Energy Efficient Electrical Devices Lighting Fixtures: We enhance energy efficiency by installing efficient lighting fixtures, thereby reducing the environmental impacts associated with energy use. Energy Efficient Fans University enhances energy efficiency by installing efficient fans, thereby reducing the environmental impacts associated with energy use. A total of 140 nos of 28 Watts / BLDC Type Atomberg Fans are installed at CISST building.

Energy Efficiency in Appliances & Equipment The university encourages the use of efficient appliances & equipment, thereby reducing the environmental impacts associated with energy use. 3. Sensor based Lights for the Corridors using circuits prepared by community science centre volunteers

4. Power Generation through PV Solar Panels

(i) The University pioneered in the installation of a Wind Solar hybrid Inverter system in the year of 2005.

1 Dual Axis Solar Tracker – 1.5 KW with Battery Backup (12V,100 Ah , 8 Nos.) 9.6 KWH were installed at the Physics and 2 at MBA Departments in 2013.

(ii) Dual Axis l Axis Solar Tracker on Grid of 1.5 KW at Gyanodaya and 3KW at Agro Economic Research Centre respectively in 2013 and 2012.
