ABOUT SVASahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan (SVA) which literally means Campaign for ParticipatoryDevelopment, started as a collective of several Individuals and Community BasedOrganizations(CBO) in the year 1993-94 to take up various development activities forupliftment of the down trodden and for the overall development of the local Communities.The members of SVA and its associated CBOs are mostly Small and Marginal Farmers,Tribals, Dalits and Agricultural Workers of Odisha.

Legal Status:

Registered under Society Registration Act of 1860. Registration No. NPD-90-9 of1995-1996.

Registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (No. 105110001 of 3rdNovember 2000), Government of India.

Registered under Section 80G of Income Tax Act, 1961.

VISION & MISSIONTo establish a Society where there will be no poverty and injustice and where people playthe roe as subjects in the Economic, Social, Cultural and Political process of developmentand where people have constant access to decision making process and the power thataffects their lives.

With the support of NABARD Tribal Development Funds (TDF) for development in theTribal Pockets of the Nuapada District of Odisha, the long term SustainableLivelihood Development Programme was undertaken. The Programme is mostlyOrchard based and the objective is to create income generating activities for landlessFarmers & Farmers having less than five Acres of land, for a period of Seven Years.

under 1st Phase plantation and Various Intercropping based interventions.

The income source of 725 beneficiaries increased by an average of Rs.

26000/- per year as compared to previous year.

Convergence of 65 Cluster Bore well from OLIC @ 190000/- per Bore well. A

Sum of Rs. 123.50 lakh invested by OLIC which facilitated irrigation of Wadi

plants and various intercropping round the year.

Additional Income Sources were created for 146 Landless Farmers

1000 Acre of wasteland converted into Agro horticulture land which had

intercrops like Onion, Chilly, Spine guard, Tomato, beans, Brinjal, radish ,

Cowpea, groundnut , Arhar and Tuber crop.

After the successful intercropping and Wadi Activities, 85% of distress

Migration checked in WADI operational Area.

36 SHGs and Several Micro Enterprises were formed through mobilization of

resources and credit linkage. This created employment opportunities in the

area.

During the years 1995-2004 Sahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan organized Farmersinformal Co-operatives in several districts to undertake marketing activitiesand based on the experiences of those activities SVA promoted OdishaProducer Company Ltd. in the year 2011-12. In recognition of the experienceand expertise of SVA in Promotion of Farmer Producer Organizations, NABARDR.O. Bhubaneswar has entrusted SVA to promote Farmers ProducerCompanies in Odisha. So far SVA has promoted 41 Farmer Producer Companiesspread over 20 districts of Odisha.

Role of SVA in Promotion of Producer Companies includes:

Feasibility study to Promote FPC in any area. Mobilization of Share holders. Support for the statutory process and Registration of the companies Conduct Baseline survey, Prepare Business Plan of the companies and

support in its implementation. Provide hand holding supports (To continue for at least three years). Facilitate linkage with Traders at various level. Facilitate to mobilize assistances from credit institutions and

government programme.

In order to provide the FPOs with marketing and other service support, SVA

has promoted a state level consortium of Farmer Producer Companies- Utkal

Krushak Samanwaya Producer Company Limited (UKSPCL). The Key business of

UKSPCL includes marketing of seeds & fertilisers, aggregation and marketing of

agriculture produces and to provide other services.

Low Cost Onion Storage at Bilenjore, Dist-Nuapada,

Odisha

To assist the local onion farmers to store their onions and to sell at better

price, Odisha Producer Company Limited (OPCL)- promoted by Sahabhagi

Vikash Abhiyan(SVA) with financial support from NABARD built two Onion

Storage Godowns in village Bilenjore of District Nuapada, Odisha. The

godowns with other infrastructures were inaugurated by Dr.

K.C.Panigrahi Chief General Manager, NABARD. The inaugural function

was also attended by Shri Umesh Chandra Das -Deputy Director

Agriculture, Nuapada, Shri Khirod Kumar Biswal – Senior Scientist, KVK

Nuapada and others. Both the storage godowns have capacity to store 25

metric tonne each and each costs Rs.3,00,000/-. In such storage facility,

onion can be stored for 5-6 months during April – October without use of

any artificial cooling system.

collaboration with FnF(a professional ngo having expertise in agri-

business) ,Manikeswari Producer Co. Ltd. (MPCL) promoted by SVA, sold

high quality seeds and other inputs to its 500+ members at reasonable

price. After harvest, MPCL with market linkage support from SVA-POPI

team, it sold 36 Tons of Maize to Pasupati Agrovet Pvt. Ltd (well

established Poultry and Cattle Feed manufacturing unit in eastern India),

Cuttack. From this market linkage, the Farmers earned Rs 150 extra as

compared to the amount received by them from the local traders.

Pasupati Group has agreed to source maize from MPCL on regular basis.

MPCL is expecting to sell 5-6 times more in the coming year. In Nuapada

district, SVA promoting FPOs- Samaleswari PCL and Udanti FPCL have also

followed the same model.

GRAM SWARAJ ABHYIAN

SVA has been continuing the follow up activities around the Gram Swaraj

Abhiyan or the campaign for Self Reliant villages. As a part of this programme

SVA has conducted awareness programme in the villages to strengthen the

village level institutions and promote self help activities . The villagers are

trained and encouraged to adopt Organic Farming, Integrated Agriculture and

undertake value addition of their produces. The villagers are also encouraged

to actively participate in the planning and implementation of various

development activities in their respective Gram Panchayats.

PROMOTION OF THRIFT & CREDIT COOPERATIVE

To avail credits and savings facility by the villagers, SVA has formed 2 Self Help

Cooperatives with the name “Sahabhagini” in Balipada and “Matru Shakti” in

Komna Village of Kalahandi and Nuapada districts respectively. Sahabhagini

Coopertaive has 1500 members with annual turnover of INR 8,15,000 in the

year 2017-18. Matru Shakti cooperative has 2691 members with annual

turnover of INR 63,15,215 in the year 2017-18.

PROMOTION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

To keep a check on environment pollution , cost and to counter erratic

electicity supply, SVA has been conducting awareness programmes to

encourage using solar appliances in the villages. During the year 2017-18 in

Sinapalli block of Nuapada district, SVA distributed 350 Smokeless improved

cook stove, 8 solar Pumping System and 150 Solar Lights among the

households for promotion of Renewable Energy.

Programme with support from NABARD in Bikrampur village of Khariar block, District

Nuapada. Under this programme the villagers were supported to undertake a number of

Self help development activities such as Kitchen Gardening, Production of Vermin Compost,

Nadep Compost, Production of Quality seeds, Protection and Conservation of village forest

etc. Due to united effort of the villagers, the hilly track was converted into a motorable

road. Now when there is a medical emergency, Ambulance is able to come to their doorstep

to take the patient, unlike before where the villagers used to take the patient by stretcher

all the way to the hospital. Milk production in the area has gone from 50 litres to 150 litres

per day. All the households have been linked to commercial banks. There have increase in

production of vegetables , pulses and Oilseeds in the area. BY next year, the villagers are

targeting to have Pipe water and Toilet in all the households.

Along with Bikrampur, SVA also implemented the programme in Karanduba village of Lanji

Gram Panchayat of Nuapada district. Through SVA effort, the villagers got support from

Governemnt for 21 Indira Awas, Primary School and road connection. Migration was also

checked in the village due to employment in agriculture and NTFP collection. With the

collective demand of the villagers, the Government has agreed to sanction 12 bore wells in

the village for irrigation purpose.

new-to banking customers

On 10th October 2017, in association with Sahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan(SVA), Banking

Codes and Standards Board of India(BCSBI) had organised “Know your Rights” – an

awareness programme for new-to-banking customers, held at Khariar, Dist-Nuapada,

Odisha. The meeting was presided by Shri Anand Aras, CEO, BCSBI; Ms Hemalata

Rajan, Senior VP, BCSBI and Shri Jagadish Pradhan, Director, SVA. Over 200 small and

marginal Farmers participated in the meeting. The participants were enlightened on

the Banking Codes and how they can protect their rights while using banking services

in their day-to-day financial transactions. The interactive session highlighted the

importance of having a nominee for their banking products like savings accounts and

fixed deposits, exchanging soiled/torn notes, privacy and confidentiality, digital

banking and grievance redressal mechanism addressed in the codes.

AWARENESS PROGRAMMES & CAMPAIGNSDURING THE YEAR 2017-18 “Know Your Rights” an awareness programme for

new-to banking customers

On 10th October 2017, in association with Sahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan(SVA), Banking

Codes and Standards Board of India(BCSBI) had organised “Know your Rights” – an

awareness programme for new-to-banking customers, held at Khariar, Dist-Nuapada,

Odisha. The meeting was presided by Shri Anand Aras, CEO, BCSBI; Ms Hemalata

Rajan, Senior VP, BCSBI and Shri Jagadish Pradhan, Director, SVA. Over 200 small and

marginal Farmers participated in the meeting. The participants were enlightened on

the Banking Codes and how they can protect their rights while using banking services

in their day-to-day financial transactions. The interactive session highlighted the

importance of having a nominee for their banking products like savings accounts and

fixed deposits, exchanging soiled/torn notes, privacy and confidentiality, digital

banking and grievance redressal mechanism addressed in the codes.

Swachh Bharat Campaign

Blood Donation Camp

On 7th October 2017, keeping in line with the Swachh Bharat mission, SVA in association withNABARD organized village cleaning and sanitation programme in few villages of Kalahandidistrict. Villagers were made aware of the importance of keeping the surrounding clean andafter the meeting the villagers along with SVA volunteers took part in the cleaning drive.

On 22nd Dec 2017, Blood donation camp was jointly organized by SVA and Ama Odisha atSVA Bilenjore center. Staffs of SVA, Asha Workers and Local Villagers donated their blood.

Rural Emersion Programme

As selected by NABARD, SAHABHAGI VIKASH ABHIYAN conducted the four weeks long RuralEmersion Programme for the second year on 02/07/2017. This time it was for six DirectRecruit Officers (DROs) of NABARD who were placed at its Bhawanipatna field centre.During this programme the DROs were facilitated to get an understanding of the issuesassociated with Rural Development, Agriculture, Tribal Development, Rural Livelihoods etc.During the four weeks they spent most of their time visiting villages, meeting withfunctionaries of Farmer Producer Organizations, visiting Grass root level Institutions such asGram Panchayat, Primary Agriculture Co-operative societies and meeting with their leaders.They also visited the Offices, Local Banks and learned on the functioning of variousgovernment schemes and projects. Among the team of six officers two were from Assamand four were from Odisha Regional Office. During this programme the DROs prepared avillage Development Plan (Micro level plan) by conducting PRAs in village Khairmal of Narlablock Kalahandi. During the field visits they also visited the projects undertaken by HarshaTrust and J.K.Papermills (in Rayagada district), Gram Vikash, A.F.C., Mahashakti Foundation,Seba Jagat and others in Kalahandi district.

Promotion of Kitchen GardeningOn 28th August 2017, SVA celebrated Kitchen Garden Day in Gajramunda villae of Sinapalliblock of Nuapada. 100+ participants had attended the programme which consists of officersfrom Horticulture Department, Farmer Club Members and Farmers. The programmehiglighted on the importance of organic kitchen gardening to get fresh and toxin freevegetables.
