Upon S?3'sdeparture a band called the Big tsoys prepared to unleashtheir own brand of Texas pr,urk on the kids. They arecal-Led ihe Big Boys because the singer must weigh 300ror.rnds and he has been bi11ed as the Austin*i3 by theN.O. punks in attendance and he rea11y needs to add abeard io flnish off the J3-Iook. Lately our scene here in 11.0. has been invaded bybands fiom our neighboring state of Texas, which isgreat cos it gives this seene a shot in the arm. Notthat the 1oca1 bands are lame, but it is nice to seenew stuff to break the monotony. Texas has a greatoutpouring of bands and what werve seen is on]-y asmall part of it. The ones lYe heve seen' the Skunks, the Savage Saints' and Legionairrers Di-sease' all ofwhom play entirely different styles of music, haveproved to be well worth seeine.

The Skuks played at Jed's a while back for aweekend with the Contenders and the

"'IaJrv/ard Youth.

Fridayrs show was somewhat of a disaster in that thePA had been supremely fucked up the night before by'one of I,l.O.!s other depraved bands. At least that'swhat some people were sayi-Ilg, but then that couldhave been a pack of 1ies, so rea11y who knows whathappened to the goddamn PA. Despite this setbackall of the bands did th.eir best with what was avail-able. Sat Nite was much better as ybu could actuallyhear all of the singers, even though it fucked up acouple of times.

Both ni3hts the Skunks impresseq me very rnuch. There are only three of them but, they definitelypacked a Iot of punch. These guys were incrediblytight and such a pleasure to see alld hear. Theyopened their shows with an instrumental ca11ed"Rumpus" at least I hope that's the name of j-t' andforgi-ve me if itrs not. This song 1et you know rightfrom the beginning that you could expect some verysolid rock from these Texans' and it made you espec-ially aware of John Dee Graham's fantastic guitarplaying ability. You \,/ere al-so aware of the compet-enby of the other two members, tsilty Blackmon andJesse Subl-ett. Bi.Ity kept up a superb best on hisdrums while Jesse technically assaulted his bass anddid most of the lead vocals. All in all they weregreatl The Skunks vrrite all of iheir ovrn materialand they have a lot of songs. Their song topi-csrun the gantlet of ideas from fucking in front of aTV or actually fucking the TV, to cheap girls' to agirl urho lives on 6th St named Peg (don'i know ifshe's cheap or not), to earthquakes arld wanting tobe scared or having been scared. If I'm not mistakenthey did about 26 songs for their set and only onewas a coDy, and that was "Sister Ray".

I got to talk to a couple of them and they seemedlike real nice people. They were traveling in amotorhome and after )-eaving N.0. they were heading'

,f or IiY to olay CtsGBrs and Iriax's. One night theirI notorhome rvas giving them sone trouble but every-thing got fi.xed so they could get on the rbad.

When the Normals (remember them?-ed.) did their 4day stint at O1e iiian Rivers recently I happened to seethe Skunks in the audience. I talked to John some ardfor-urd out ihey were on their way home from l,iY anddeci-ded to see what the i{ormals were like. r didn.tsee him afterwards so I didn't get his oplnion, but hedid tel1 me that everything went well in l,ly and theyrresupposed to go back.

The next time these guys come here get off your assesand go see theml Y'a11 are welcome here anytime, socome back soon, Okay? FttH
