Your resume is the key marketing document to make sure you get the right opportunities to show off your skills.

Where’s my candidate!!!!!

I am getting stress and starting to lose confidence. All the resumes seemed to be lost in the black hole. I

should be qualified based on my diploma.

Reality

10

A resume is a perspective document — your self-made invitation to an interviewwith the job you want.

Reality

11

All roles are created out of a business needs.

Time pressure.

Instead of coming out with a list of skills you possessed, put yourself in theposition of the hiring manager and ask “Why should we hire you?”

What you know What the hiring manager is looking for

But what can you do for the company?

To the hiring manager…………………………………

I don’t have much work experience because it’s

been quite hard to find much. Last summer I worked

for six weeks in my mum’s friends nursery to help

with holiday cover – I had quite a bit of

responsibility with some of the office duties but I

also really enjoyed it because during the breaks I

could play with some of the kids that attended the

nursery.

Jobs = Function (Skills, Qualities)Your resume is your career brochure, not your autobiography. [Ashley Watkins]

Reality

15

Most of the time, the first person to read your resume is not the hiringmanager. (recruiters, HRs, applicant tracking systems -ATS)

Recruiters only scan resumes for an average of 6 seconds before making ajudgment, so what they do see has to be the most impactful material you have.

Each recruiter may easily handle 10-12 active cases at any one time and he/shewill have to present 6 to 10 candidates per case.

Easily review up to 80+ resumes for any given vacancy.

Reality

16

The roles are usually non-exclusive for external recruiters. Hence speed forthem is an essence.

Vacancies are expected to be filled up in 2 to 3 months.

Sense Making

17

As a candidate, your job is to make the recruiter and HR’s job easier.

Help The Recruiter To Help Yourself.

The recruiter and HR’s job is to rule you out, not in. [Ashley Watkins]

Your resume will not be read by the hiring manager if it does not get throughthe initial vetting stage.

You are only a qualified candidate if you can fulfil the businessneeds required.

End goal is to increase your probability of selection.

I decided to take up Kendo as I was interested in Japanese martialarts after watching anime

I wanted to know more about Japanese culture and learn how todefend myself after being in NCC in secondary school

I found it hard to learn all the different techniques at first and theteachers were strict. I also found it hard to juggle school work withKendo training

It has been going for a year although I stopped for exam revisions

I feel I’ve achieved something because I passed my first kendo exam.I also feel I am more disciplined as the practice is strict.
