INFORMATIONS ÉPIDÉMIOLOGIQUES - EPIDEMIOLOGICAL NOTES

TYPHUS EN 1959

Les notifications officielles, conformément au Règlement sanitaire international, ont fourni, en 1959, 5 800 cas environ de typhus à poux; quelque 4 000 de ces cas ont été signalés en Ethiopie et 900 dans quatre pays de l'Afrique du Nord et dansl'UnionSud-Africaine. Moins de 700 cas ont été relevés dans quatre pays d'Amérique (Mexique, Equateur, Bolivie, Pérou); 144 en Asie (Afghanistan, Iran, Turquie et Corée) et 85 en Yougoslavie.

A l'exception du Caire, où 37 cas ont été déclarés au cours de l'année, !>euls des cas sporadiques ont été signalés dans les ports et aéroports ouverts au trafic international. Ceux-ci comprennent Philippeville (Algérie), Tripoli (Libye), Alexandrie et Suez (Egypte, RAU), et Tunis (Tunisie), en Afrique;Cochabamba, La Paz (Bolivie), Quito (Equateur), Mexico, Merida, Tampico (Mexique), Arequipa (Pérou), en Amérique; Kaboul (Afghanistan), en Asie, et Belgrade (Yougoslavie), en Europe.

En Afrique, les cas de typhus étaient répartis comme suit:

En Ethiopie (4· 749 cas en 1958) 3 964 cas ont été déclarés en 1959, dont le plus grand nombre dans les provinces de Shoa (1 031), Arussi (939) et Harrar-Balé (502). En Egypte, R.A.U., 811 cas ont été déclarés en 1959 (contre 789 en 1958) dont le plus grand nombre dans les provinces de la Basse-Egypte: Beheira (209), Gharbiya (130), Dakhalieh (114) et dans la province de Beni-Suef (124) en HauteEgypte. Dans l'Union Sud-Africaine, 79 cas ont été relevés dans 8 districts de la Province du Cap. Des cas sporadiques ont également été signalés dans 12 localités de l'Algérie (26 cas), 6 localités de Libye (17 cas) et 8 localités de Tunisie (15 cas).

En Amérique, le plus grand nombre de cas a été enregistré en Equateur (283 cas), au Mexique (258 cas) et au Pérou (96 cas); la présence de la maladie a également été signalée en Colombie (12 cas), au Chili (6 cas) et çn Argentine (4 cas).

En Asie (en dehors de la Chine continentale), la présence du typhus a été signalée en Corée du Sud (67 cas), en Afghanistan (40 cas) et en Iran (15 cas); en Turquie, 23 cas ont été notifiés dans 9 provinces.

En Europe, le typhus à poux était présent en Yougoslavie (85 cas, dont 48 en Bosnie-Herzégovine) et en Bulgarie (4 cas).

TYPHUS IN 1959

Official notifications under the International Sanitary Regulations accounted in 1959 for about 5 800 cases of louse-borne typhus; of these about 4 000 were reported in Ethiopia and 900 in four countries of North Africa and in the Union of South Africa. Less than 700 cases were notified in four countries of America (Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru); 144 cases in Asia (Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey and Korea) and 85 cases in Yugoslavia.

Except in Cairo, where 37 cases were recorded during the year, only sporadic cases were reported in ports and airports open to international traffic. These include Philippeville (Algeria), Tripoli (Libya), Alexandria and Suez (Egypt, U.A.R.) and Tunis (Tunisia) in Africa; Cochabamba, La Paz (Bolivia), Quito (Ecuador), Mexico, Merida, Tampico (Mexico), Arequipa (Peru) in America; Kabul (Afghanistan) in Asia and Beograd (Yugoslavia) in Europe.

In Africa, the typhus cases were distributed as follows:

In Ethiopia (where 4 749 cases were recorded in 1958) the total of cases notified in 1959 was 3 964 of which the highest number occurred in the provinces of Shoa (1 031), Arussi (939) and HarrarBaie (502). In Egypt, U.A.R., 811 cases were reported in 1959 (789 cases in 1958) most of which occurred in the provinces of Lower Egypt: Beheira (209), Gharbiya (130), Dakhalieh (114) and in Beni-Suef Province (124) in Upper Egypt. In the Union of South Africa, 79 cases were recorded in 8 districts of Cape Province. Sporadic cases were also reported in 12localities of Algeria (26 cases), 6 localities of Libya (17 cases) and 8 localities of Tunisia (15 cases).

In America, the highest number of cases were recorded in Ecuador (283 cases), Mexico (258 cases) and Peru (96 cases); the presence of the disease was also notified in Colombia (12 cases), ChiZe (6 cases) and Argentina (4 cases).

In Asia (outside mainland China) the disease was reported in South Korea (67 cases), Afghanistan (40 cases) and Iran (15 cases); in Turkey 23 cases were notified in 9 provinces.

In Europe the louse-borne type of typhus was present in Yugoslavia (85 cases of which 48 occurred in Bosnia-Hercegovina) and in Bulgaria (4 cases).

FIÈVRE RÉCURRENTE EN 1959

L'Ethiopie semble actuellement être la seule région du monde où la fièvre récurrente à poux est endémique; 8 800 cas environ ont été dénombrés dans ce pays en 1959, tandis que 18 cas seulement ont été relevés dans onze pays d'Mrique, d'Amérique et d'Asie. La présence de la maladie n'a pas été observée pendant l'année dans les ports et aéroports ouverts au trafic international.

En Ethiopie, le nombre de cas déclarés officiellement a augmenté, passant de 3 220 en 1957 à 5 009 en 1958, et atteignant 8 759 cas en 1959. 1 125 de ces cas ont été relevés entre le 16 août et le 12 septembre. Les plus grands nombres de cas ont été enregistrés en Erythrée (2 219) et dans les provinces de Tigré (2 297), Shoa (1117) et Arussi (971). Un petit foyer avec six cas a été observé à Zilingei (Darfour) au Soudan.

En dehors de cette poussée, due à la fièvre récurrente à poux, seuls des cas isolés ont été notifiés comme fièvre récurrente au cours de l'année, souvent sans spécification du type de la maladie. Ces cas isolés se sont produits en Tunisie (dans 3 régions), au Congo belge (dans 2 régions), au Nigéria et en Somalie britannique, en Mrique; en Bolivie et au Pérou, en Amérique, et à Chypre, en Turquie et en Afghanistan, en Asie.

Amérique

Etats-Unis: Selon un rapport du 25 mars, aucune nouvelle poussée de grippe ou de maladie à forme grippale n'a été signalée par les autorités sanitaires des divers états. Le total des décès pour toutes causes, dans 117 grandes villes, tout en restant au-dessus de la moyenne pour cette période de l'année, a diminué au cours des semaines terminées les 5, 12 et 19 mars.

Un virus du type Al a été isolé à partir de quatre cas, dans le comté de Douglas au Nebraska; la présence de la souche A2 a été confirmée chez un malade, dans une autre région du Nebraska. Des prélèvements du tissus pulmonaire chez un malade à Charlotte, Caroline du Nord, ont fourni une souche A2. Un virus du type A2 a également été isolé dans 1 'Oregon.

Europe

Danemark: Le point culminant de la fréquence de la grippe à Copenhague paraît avoir été atteint au cours de la semaine terminée le 27 février (2 810 cas). Au cours des trois semaines consécutives terminées le 19 mars, le nombre de cas déclarés a diminué.

Suisse: Le nombre des cas attribués à la grippe a diminué, passant de 1193 à 641 au cours de la semaine terminée le 19 mars.

RELAPSING FEVER IN 1959

Ethiopia appears to be at present the only area where !ouseborne relapsing fever· is endemie; about 8 800 cases were notified in this country in 1959 while only 18 cases were recorded in 11 other co un tries of Mrica, America and Asia. The presence of the disease was not recorded during the year in any ports or airports open to international traffic.

In Ethiopia the number of officially notified cases rose from 3 220 in 1957 and 5 009 in 1958 to 8 759 in 1959. Of these cases 1125 were recorded between 16 August and 12 September. The highest incidence was recorded in Eritrea (2 219 cases) and the provinces of Tigré (2 297), Shoa (1117) and Arussi (971). Outside this outbreak, due to !ouse-borne type of the disease, only single cases were notified during the year, often without specification of the type. Such single cases were notified in Tunisia (in 3 areas), in the Belgian Congo (in 2 areas) and in Nigeria and Somali/and Protectorate in Mrica; in Bolivia and Peru in America, and in Cyprus, Turkey and Afghanistan in Asia.

INFLUENZA

America

United States: According to a report dated 25 March no new outbreaks of influenza and infl.uenza-like illness have been reported by any of the States. The total number of deaths from ali causes in 117 major cities, still above the average for this period of the year, bas decreased during the weeks ending 5, 12 and 19 March.

Type Al virus strain bas been isolated from four persons in Douglas County, Nebraska; confirmation of type A2 influenza strain bas also been demonstrated in: one patient of another area of Nebraska. Specimens of lung tissues from a patient in Charlotte, North Carolina, yielded a strain of type A2. Type A2 strain was also isolated in Oregon.

Europe

Denmark: The peak of influenza incidence in Copenhagen appears to have been reached during week ended 27 February (2 810 cases) and the number of cases decreased during the three consecutive weeks ended 19 March.

Switzerland: The number of cases ascribed to influenza feil during the week ended 19 March from 1193 to 641.
