FOREWORD
We are grateful to various organisations who have supported this symposium financially.
As dam engineering developed with advancement of technology, new types of dams using different
construction materials came to operation adopting modem designs and method of construction with accent on
safety of these structures as it is considered imperative to derive economic benefits from these dams for as long
a period as possible. This warrants special attention to be given to dams built in earlier times not conforming to
modem designs and construction practices which may have to be rehabilitated through universally accepted
current norms and measures to make these structures quite safe.
Keeping in view the importance of the subject, the Indian Committee on Large Dams (INCOLD), Central
Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP), Committee for International Geosynthetics Society (India) (CIGSI) and
Geographical Committee of International Water Resources Association (India) are organising a one day
Symposium on “Rehabilitation of Dams” during the 66th ICOLD Annual Meeting, in which about 30 papers,
focussing on all aspects of Rehabilitation of Dams, will be presented.
I congratulate all the authors for excellent contribution of the papers. We express our sincere thanks to
Technical Committee, headed by Mr. N. Visvanathan, for the guidance in selection of the papers.
C.V.J. VARMAChairman, INCOLD
For harnessing water resources of the streams/rivers for catering to various human needs like drinking water
supply, irrigation, hydro power generation, industrial needs etc. man has been constructing dams from time
immemorial. The ancient civilisation of India, Egypt, Mesopotamia and China show that making water
available for domestic use, harnessing it for irrigation and controlling it for flood protection against floods
were basic pre-occupations in these societies. In India there is evidence of canal, dams and dugwells from pre
historic times.
