RCSC Christmas/New Year’s Schedule See Page 2 While many may remember wishing for a white Christmas as a child, people in Sun City AZ for the holidays can be certain there will be a sleigh full of good cheer and fun times throughout the season, with plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. RCSC Clubs celebrate the season in a variety of ways – from simple potlucks to catered events; some dine out and others may have modest gift exchanges. In the meantime, music fills the air with car- ols and choirs and concerts for all. Many of Sun City AZ’s churches host a variety of performances during this season of joy. Even Santa Claus makes several appearances early in the month before his busiest delivery days arrive, so it is wise to carry your smartphone or camera as you make your holiday rounds. One place he will be for certain is the RCSC Holiday Celebration at Lakeview Center on Friday, December 8, 2017 starting at 3pm. This annual community event helps to spread glad tidings as residents and guests cheerfully partake in fundraising festivities for a good cause including the Amazing Duck Race and Duck Bucks may be purchased in advance (see page 11 for more information). This year, donations collected are ear-marked for the Del Webb Sun Cities Historical Museum, located next to Oakmont Center. We end the evening with a lighted boat parade which leaves the Cameo Ave. Bridge at 6:15pm. (See the back page for event details). RCSC Cardholders are also invited to a very special evening as Scott Keo brings his Michael Buble’ Christmas Tribute to Sundial Auditorium on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 7pm. Free for RCSC Cardholders and their escort guests. This event is general admission and doors will open at 6pm. Please arrive with adequate time to present your Member or Privilege Card (with photo) and to enjoy a complimentary cup of hot cider or cocoa. Golf & Grounds Report

Pro Shops

On December 4 we will be hosting a fundraising tournament for our chosen Winter Celebration Charity, the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum. The format will be Beat the Pro(s), which will be Brian Duthu (PGA) and Chris Linam (Pro Shop Manager) and will be competing against other two-person teams. Teams that beat the Best Ball score of the Pros will equally share the prize pool. The entry fee will be $40 and the event will be held at North with lunch at Oakmont Center following play. In addition to bragging rights for beating the pro, there will also be a chance at a Pebble Beach Vaca-tion on Hole #12.

Complimentary golf clinics begin October 28 at Lakes West. The first clinic will be chipping, followed by putting, irons and woods in subsequent weeks. The clinics will also be held on November 4, 11 & 18, with all clinics beginning at 9:30am. Clinics are open to all skill levels and do not require registration. This is a great opportunity to introduce a family member, friend or neighbor to the wonderful game of golf. The remaining clinics will be held at Lakes East/Lakes West. Another session of free clinics will be offered in March.

Registration for Get Golf Ready classes is also underway. The cost of the classes is $99 which includes 4 days of instruction as part of a group of 8 students or less, as well as a 5th day of on- course instruction. The program covers swing fundamentals as well as golf etiquette and an introduction to golf rules. The program is part of a national initiative of the PGA of America to grow the game of golf. The first class will begin November 7 and classes will be available throughout the winter and spring.

Snack Shops

Through September snack shop revenue is running $4,190 ahead of budget. The shops that will reopen on October 28 are scheduled to close at 3pm, but are given the discretion to remain open as long as demand dictates.

Golf Courses

Overseeding began October 9 and has germinated as expected, despite daytime temperatures being slightly warmer than ideal. The courses currently closed (Riverview, Lakes West, Willowbrook and South) will reopen October 28 and will be cart path only until November 10. The courses that had not yet been overseeded closed October 23 and will reopen November 11, with cart path only restrictions in place until November 24.

For those that are interested, plans for Willowcreek green recon-struction are posted in the Willowcreek/Willowbrook pro shop. Final plans for the turf reduction concept are in the final stages and will be posted in the pro shop once they are available.

from all various centers and will be replacing with similar plantings. The white landscape rock around the mini-golf station at Lakeview will be replaced with red rock which will also be installed along the path leading to the parking lot.

Lakeview Lawn Bowl was top dressed and laser leveled two weeks ago. The east green has received the final leveling; the west green has an additional leveling planned. We have been having issues with a coyote pulling up carpet and digging in the stones in the ditch at Fairway. We have been told that someone has been leaving food for this coyote. We kindly remind everyone that feeding wild animals may make them dependent on human food sources, mak-ing them less fearful of humans and possibly lose their ability to survive in the wild. Feeding of wild animals is strongly discouraged by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, we ask for your coop-eration in discontinuing this practice.

We’ve got with a great selection of drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and putters for on-the-course trials right now at Riverview!

Just because one Board is finished with its work for the year doesn’t mean that the work is done. There are always new items to consider. As we look forward to a new Board taking over on January 1st, and to a new year, ask yourself if this isn’t a great time for you to become involved and help make the RCSC even better! Wow! It’s hard to believe we are in the midst of the bustling holi-day season! As I sit and reflect back on the year, it’s been a busy one, but I think a very fruitful one for the RCSC and Sun City AZ.

The RCSC Board of Directors has incorporated several new poli-cies that helped to improve the communications with Members. In January, we began videotaping Board/Member Exchanges and Board Meetings and posting them on the internet so if you were not able to attend a meeting, you could still see what the Board was up to. Roughly ten times the number of people that used to attend our meetings now watch the videos every single month. We also added the “Meet with The Board” where once a month you can come in and meet with a couple of Board members, without a huge audience being present. It’s worked out very well, and we’ve received a lot of positive feedback from it.

The Board has also undertaken some very important legisla-tion that will serve Sun City AZ far into the future. We heard and approved the recommendations of the ad hoc Long Range Plan-ning Committee’s eight months of work on the use of the Grand Avenue property, by approving five clubs to relocate onto this property, and one club to move into a space that will be vacated. We brought back one of the more popular committees, the Long Range Planning Committee, as a standing committee after a three year hiatus.

The Board also approved the go-ahead for the Willowcreek/Wil-lowbrook irrigation project, greens rebuild (on Willowcreek), and turf reduction program on both courses. We also gave the green light to the long-awaited South Golf Course Pro Shop, Snack Shop, and Golf Cart Barn renovation.

The Board of Directors were happy to welcome four new clubs to our ever-growing list of things to do in Sun City AZ!

With all of the improvements the Board approved this year, there is so much more work to be done! 2018 will be a watershed year for the RCSC with many new ideas and programs in the works.

Financial Report:

As directed by the RCSC Board of Directors, we did not budget income as conservatively as we have in the past. Two divisions, Bowling and Golf, did not meet their gross income budget as of September 30, 2017. Bowling missed their budgeted gross income by $18,132, which is due to leagues starting with less teams and the loss of one league completely. RCSC Cardholder daily green fees came in under budget by $77k ($43k less than last year), daily surcharge fees for annual golf passes are $12k under budget and guest daily green fees ended the third quarter at $24k under budget. Fortunately most of this negative budget variance in golf revenue was recap-tured by public daily green fees, leaving the golf division under budgeted income by only $1,265 as of September 30, 2017. With an additional $9k in credit card fees, the golf division missed their budgeted gross income by only $6,986.

Although we ended the third quarter well within our budget for wages, taxes and benefits, I believe it is important to point out that this expense has increased by $871,620 over last year due to the passing of Proposi-tion 206 by Arizona voters which increased minimum wage from $8.05 to $10 per hour in 2017 and provided sick pay for part-time personnel. This proposition will continue to affect us as it calls for increases in 2018 (to $10.50), 2019 (to $11) and 2020 (to $12). The Arizona minimum wage will continue to increase each year thereafter based upon the cost of living (starting on January 1, 2021).

As has become common practice to assure that there are sufficient funds for operations, many projects are held until the last quarter of the year. As of September 30, 2017, we have $954k in budgeted projects that are yet to be completed. Although this reflects as a positive variance from budget in our financial statements, these budgeted projects will be completed in the fourth quar-ter and/or carried forward into 2018 and these funds will be spent.

We have under budgeted utilities throughout the entire year and as of the end of the third quarter we have a $50k negative variance from budget, which is primar-ily in two expenses: water and sewer and pump and well electric. Both have considerable increases from last year’s expense, $20k and $28k respectively. All divisions excluding Food Service met their budgeted general operating expenses. Unplanned equipment replacement at the leased café in Lakeview Lanes cre-ated a $4k negative variance.

The entire organization has completed the third quarter of 2017 within our operating and capital budget year to date and each division has ended September 30, 2017 within their overall budget year to date as well.

Investment Report 3rd Quarter 2017:

RCSC’s Investment Policy (Board Policy 33) is stringent in its requirements with the priority of investment objec-tives to be placed in this order: 1) safety, 2) liquidity, and 3) yield.

At the end of the third quarter 2017, $4,600,199 (cost basis) of the $2.5M unrestricted cash reserve and other unrestricted funds have been invested in various FDIC insured certificates of deposit and corporate bonds. Bowling:

Preventive maintenance for pinsetters, lanes and lane conditioning machines has always been a high priority at both bowling centers. Although preventive mainte-nance is performed year-round, extensive maintenance is performed during the summer months to ensure a smooth operation during the fall season. All the bowling lanes were inspected during the summer by the United States Bowling Congress to ensure that the lanes comply with all specifications as mandated by the USBC.

Sign-ups for the annual New Year’s Eve Bowling Party at Lakeview Lanes will begin Wednesday November 1, 2017 at 9am. The party starts December 31, 2017 at 8pm with a potluck, bowling and prize drawings. The night will end with a champagne toast to the new year. Everyone is welcome even if you are not a bowler. Stop by Lakev-iew or Bell Lanes to reserve your spot as availability is limited.

Human Resources:

Three CPR, AED and First Aid training classes for employees were held in October. Thir-teen employees completed the training. Additional classes are scheduled for November to complete the fall training schedule.

Recruiting and hiring continues and in October to date eighteen individuals have been hired. Some are due to turnover and others have filled seasonal positions.

Since we are in the last quarter of the year, we are preparing for employee benefits renewal and open enrollment. Typically insurance companies do not provide renewal rates until approximately 60 days prior to the end of the benefit year. Our management is proactive in hurrying that process along so we get the information with as much lead time as possible to complete our budgeting process. We have scheduled open enrollment meetings for Thursday and Friday, December 7 and 8, and are preparing materials for the meetings. Biometric screenings and health assessments will take place in early January.

On October 19, 2017, the IRS issued Notice 2017-58 detailing the cost-of-living adjust-ments affecting dollar limitations for Section 125 Flexible Spending Plans. The maximum amount that an individual can contribute to a Healthcare Flexible Spending Account has increased from $2,600 to $2,650 for all plan years starting on or after January 1, 2018. These contributions are taken pretax from participants paychecks.

PAGE 10 COMMUNITY NEWS SUNVIEWS • DECEMBER 2017

Every Drop Counts!Do your part to help conserve!

In September 2015, The Hollywood Reporter published an article called “Hollywood’s100 Favorite TV Shows.” Whether we agree or disagree with their rankings, they areinteresting. Many of the shows have a special meaning to us because of how theyrelate to where we were then, or a significant event in our lives. Below are the top 10of that list and their special meaning to the Friends of the Sun City LIbraries, Inc.

10. The Simpsons, the Smiths, the Browns, the Millers, in fact everyone who has commented, thinks that Books Around the Corner is one of, if not the best usedbookstore in the area. If you haven’t visited us yet, drop by the Bell Recreation CenterLibrary and join the happy shoppers. Browsing is welcome; buying is even better.

9. Mad Men, as well as mad women, mellow when shopping at our Bookstore. The warm greeting upon entering, the assistance in a book search, and the big smile atcheckout, all by our volunteers, cannot help but turn a scowl to a grin.

8. I Love Lucy, Judy, Carol, Monica, and all Book Buddies who deliver booksto housebound Sun City residents. Readers who cannot get to either Library love thefact that Library materials, which they select, can be delivered to their doors. Thatservice is available at 602-651-2014. Leave a message for Carol, not Lucy.

7. Saturday Night Live does not exist in the Bookstore, or either of our Libraries. Life does return, however, on Monday through Saturday at 9:00am in the Libraries and 10:00am in Books Around the Corner.

6. The Sopranos, as well at the altos, tenors and basses, all singing the praises of the Bell and Fairway Libraries. In addition to all the regular features of a fine library, our special features for seniors strike a friendly note. Just ask when you need a favor.

5. Seinfeld is so special, the Bookstore has his picture on the wall. His feelings about bookstores are an inspiration. Stop by to read them and you will understand.

4. Game of Thrones is not played in Library pro-grams. Educational matters and fun are. Check out special programs by going to http://www.mcldaz.org. Click on Events at the top of the page and select your Branch, or call 602-652-3000.

3. The X-Files are those unlocked mysteries found in a library or bookstore by just exploring in new areas. X does mark the spot, because it is different for everyone. Our Libraries and Bookstore welcome explorers, and will help when asked.

2. Breaking Bad does not exist in the Bookstore; however, breaking good is the Christmas Boutique all month. Come see all the special items. Another good break in December is the Monday only soft cover half-price book sale. Do not forget to take afun break by attending Fairway’s book sale on Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9.

1. Friends of the Sun City Libraries, Inc. are so proud to support our two greatLibraries at Bell and Fairway. We joyfully accept the number one rating, because weare not shy about telling the world what a good thing we have.

Happy Hearts Knit Comfort for Veterans

The 38 members of “Happy Hearts” at Bell Craft Club donate their time to make lap robes and afghans for our Veterans. So far this year the Ameri-can Legion Post 62 Auxiliary in Peoria has distributed 450 of these hand crafted items to the Veterans throughout the state.

To help with this growing need, we are reaching out for yarn donations so that we can continue this work. Any yarn you may have would be much appreciated. Please call 480-299-3316 for donation location.

RCSC Cardholders interested in knitting or crocheting are welcome to join our Happy Hearts group on Friday afternoons from noon to 3pm. We supply the yarn when needed.

The Happy Hearts salute our Veterans for their courage, honor, and most of all, for their personal sacrifice to protect Our Country’s Freedom! Thank you!

No longer just a pretty face plate, the old china painting has changed! More modern, versatile uses for china painting can be almost anything you imagine! Wear it (jewelry), hang it (framed pieces), drink from it (cups and mugs), eat off of it (yes, the plate) and even construct with it (back splashes, counter and table tops, even flooring).

Get creative with china painting! Cute and whimsical, abstract or traditional. Whatever style you fancy, make great gifts with real meaning for family and friends. Let us show you how!

China Painting is located on the 2nd floor at Fair-way (room 217) and we’re hoping you’ll stop by for a visit and try it out for free. We’re open Mon-days and Wednesdays from 9am to 2pm, Tuesday and Fridays from 9am to noon. New classes starting soon. For more information, please call 623-256-6784. You’ll be surprised by what you’re able to create – and that’s a promise!

Fairway Readers

Attention all sewers. Come have some fun with the Bell Stitchers while doing good for someone else. Bell Stitchers is a charitable organization staffed by volunteers who sew outfits for disadvantaged children. The outfits are distributed to seven local schools and the Aqua Fria Food & Cloth-ing Bank during the spring, fall and winter seasons.

In addition to making clothes for children, volunteers also make and sell miscella-neous craft items in order to raise money to buy sewing accessories needed by the club throughout the year. Some of these items include doll outfits (to fit 18” American Girl type dolls), bowl cozies, aprons, steering wheel covers, place mats, adult bibs, scrub-bies, baby items and beautiful Christmas articles. Most are available year-round from the clubroom. If you are in need of reasonably price products made in the USA, please stop by and see everything we have to offer.

Bell Stitchers welcomes new members who like to sew. New members bring fresh ideas and help keep the items we make up-to-date. Please visit our clubroom located in the Arts & Crafts Village at Bell Center. We would love to give you a tour of our facility, which has sewing equipment and closets full of material and notions available for club mem-bers to use. If you prefer, you can sew at home. Membership is open to all valid RCSC Cardholders. Dues are $3 a year.

Winter club hours are Tuesday from 9am to 3pm, Wednesday from 9am to noon and Friday from 9am to 2pm. Join us for a cup of coffee/tea, cookies and lively conversations during our 10am break time

In the words of Olivia Newton John, “Let’s Get Physical…Physical. Let Me Hear Your Body Talk…Body Talk.” Find out what 400+ Sun City residents regularly enjoy! Movement to music—that is what Line Dance Club embodies. Dancing truly is a lifetime sport and studies have shown that dancing improves the brain, balance, coordination and mood. It’s aerobic and raises the heart rate. Dancing gets those happy Endorphin hormones ignited. Two criteria of a well-rounded life for us young-at-heart “seniors” are regular physical exercise and connecting socially with others. Line Dance Club accomplishes both. Even with as many as 250 members at some (winter) dances, there is still plenty of room for everyone to dance. We also have Club Luncheons scheduled in March, October and December. Moreover, most of the club’s dances are dances that are danced interna-tionally.

Sun City Line Dance Club has members of all levels from those who never have danced and to those who have danced a lot. Our Line Dancers are of all ages through 97 years young! Escorted guests and RCSC visitors are welcome. Everyone starts out dancing as a beginner, and Line Dance has had many beginners who learned and progressed. A wide variety of music and songs are played. You never know who might be waiting to meet you at Line Dance!

Line Dance Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday (except holidays) usually from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Sundial Center, with some exceptions due to RCSC scheduling. Before each dance, free 15-minute dance lessons are given by our instructor. Basic steps are taught as well as some of the beginner dances. The first hour is a continuation of the beginner lessons where the dance steps are put to music. Second hour has improved-beginner dances, and third hour has intermediate–level dances. Line Dance Club also hosts a Saturday night dance in those months that have a 5th Saturday at Sundial, where the air-conditioned auditorium is a great place in the summer to keep cool while getting great aerobic exercise, and it’s a joy to dance on the auditorium’s wood floor.

Line Dance Club has a Facebook page containing a list of line dances by the hour they are danced at our regular dances at SUNCITYLINEDANCECLUB.FACEBOOK and you will also find links to on-line teaching sessions. Step sheets are also available and may be down-loaded to your computer or smartphone. Members can learn the line dances in class and then practice at home using these tutorial dance links and step sheets. Come join the fun!

The Fairway Readers (formerly Book in Hand) meets at 1pm on the second Friday in Fairway Center Room 217. There are no dues and the club meets year-round. Members must show RCSC Card at first session. Refreshments are served in December and April.

Moderator Jeri Hauff prepares questions and keeps members on track during lively discussions, now using a microphone so that all members can hear. It is also passed between participants when sharing thoughts and ideas with the group. Club President Ashley Hibbard states, “Members really enjoy being able to hear better thanks to the use of the mic!”

Books are chosen by consensus several months in advance. The Fairway Library Branch puts books on reserve a month in advance for those with Maricopa County library cards. Some members prefer to purchase books to share with club readers.

Our monthly newsletter, prepared by Club Vice President Sue Blechl, is available at the meetings. For more information, call 623-933-7361.

Check out Fairway Readers upcoming selections:

• December 2017: The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens• January 2018: Madame Secretary: A Memoir by Madeleine Albright• February 2018: Kitchens of the Great Midwest, a novel by J. Ryan Stradal• March 2018: Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry• April 2018: The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Juno Diaz

Jewelry @ Oakmont – New name, same great qual-ity craftsmanship! Come visit our showroom at the Oakmont Recreation Center and see what you can create!

Our experienced artists would love to share their skills with you. Jewelry @ Oakmont, Sun City’s very first club, is where mem-bers design and craft cus-tom jewelry using stones and beads, sterling silver, German silver, copper, brass and other metals to create whatever is in their imagination. Recent interest in glass fusion has expanded and now includes snack dishes, candle holders and assorted items as well as jewelry. Faceting is making ordinary glass look and sparkle like a diamond. One of our members has designed a kaleidoscope and makes scrimshaw powder horns. You’ll also find members doing lapidary, wire wrapping, chain making and inlay. Our club is a meeting place where members can come and enjoy each other’s company, share ideas, solve problems and just have a great time. There are some fabulous creations by members on display and for sale in the club’s sales room.

All training courses offered by the club for the various crafts include a start-up kit (equip-ment and raw materials needed), minimum of three classroom/instruction sessions, and a certificate upon completion. Classes are scheduled when a person expresses an interest and are dependent upon the availability of the instructor and student. Fees for classes range from $25-$35.

Open to all RCSC Cardholders, annual membership fee is $10. Club meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 9am. For more information, stop by during our club hours or contact Club President John Schmidt at 623-322-4595.

Jewelry @ Oakmont is open all-year round!

The LGBT Club of Sun City became a sanctioned club in January 2017. During our first meeting, we received 105 members and have grown to 171.

Our club provides a safe networking organization with the mission to provide community service to Sun City through volunteerism—the very founda-tion on which Sun City was built.

In our inaugural year, we have been busy. We collected food for the Valley View Com-munity Food Bank and donated $100 to support One·N·Ten which provides a safe place and programs for LGBTQ youths. Money will go toward items that were lost in a fire. Our Home Improvement Committee has partnered with the Sun City Homeowners Associa-tion’s Resident Assistance Maintenance Program (RAMP). The committee has cleaned up three properties, totaling 35 service hours and will continue working with SCHOA.We also teamed up with Eve’s Place which provides support to victims of domestic, sexual and dating abuse. The committee has sewn nearly 100 cloth bags used to distribute basic necessities. Each bag has a ribbon that reads, “Made with love by LGBT seniors in Sun City AZ.”

We also have fun meetings and having many social events! As the first sanctioned LGBT Club in the area, we are honored and enthusiastic about our commitment to Sun City. Giving back is what it’s all about.

The club will be hosting a Holiday Party on Thursday, December 14, 2017 for club mem-bers and their guests.

On February 1, 2018, the club will be hosting a concert by nationally known lesbian singer Tret Fure at the Church of the Palms in Sun City. For ticket information about this concert, which is open to the public, please email: [email protected]

When was the last time that you attended a dance? What was your favorite dance? Jitter-bug, or maybe the Waltz? The Jitterbug is now called the Swing. Whether it's the Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot, or any of the Latin dances, we do them all during our Friday night dances in the beautiful Sundial Auditorium.

When you step through the door, you will probably be reminded of some of the great ballrooms of long ago. Sundial has one of the best dance floors in the entire Valley. And talk about music - this is where singles and couples come to hear some of the best live dance music in the region. Whether you love to slow dance, are an accomplished

ballroom dancer, or somewhere in between, you will love the Sundial Ballroom.

Friday evening dances begin with a Foxtrot at 7:00pm and usually end with a Waltz, at about 9:45pm. If you are a begin-ner or would like to learn a few new steps, we offer free dance lessons before each dance which begin at 6:15pm. Admission is $5 for members, $8 for escorted guests. Annual club mem-bership/participation is $3 and open to all RCSC Cardholders.

Not only is dancing good for you both physically and men-tally, but it is fun, easy to learn and a great way to make new friends. For more information, please call Bob at 623-215-8718 or visit our website at www.suncitysinglesdanceclub.com

Fun, Friendship, and Exercise (FFE) is a great description of lawn bowling. The challenge of throwing a bowl (ball), that doesn't go straight and hitting the jack is fun, and each time you are paired with different people so making new friends is easy. You can attend when you like, you're not committed to be there each time like some other sports; and once the game is over, the results are not carried forward like 10-pin bowling averages or golf handicaps. Each session offers an opportunity for friendly competition and a chance to hone your bowling skills. For new bowlers, a variety of bowls are available at the club for your use and instructors will help you learn the game. Club membership is just $5 per year and open to all RCSC Cardholders. Please join us for lawn bowling on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at the Mountain View Center - you'll be glad you did! For more information on lawn bowling as a sport and contact numbers for each club, please go to BowlsAZ.com.

Lawn Bowls at Mountain View Organized in 1979, the Sun City Concert Band is open to RCSC Cardholders. Musical leadership is provided by Director George Zoske and Associ-ate Director Charles Musgrave and organizational leadership by a 5-member Board of Directors. The Band plays a wide variety of music but focuses on traditional concert band literature. Membership comprises current/retired professional musicians, retired music educators, and others from a wide variety of backgrounds who have a love for band music. Band members possess the requisite talent to play their chosen instruments and enjoy the fellowship of colleagues in the process of making music. The group works together to produce good music and perform free concerts for the enjoyment of the community.

The band’s first concert of the season was for a standing room only crowd. We will play a Christmas concert on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Sundial. Our annual Sousa concert is scheduled for Sunday, March 4, 2018, and the final concert of the spring season will be on Thursday, April 22, 2018. Check out the band’s web site: sccband.org. Sun City Concert BandClub Articles continued from page 16

“This is a question I hear quite often,” states Jane Fortier, personal trainer and co-owner of Get Fit for Life. “Both forms of exercise have advantages and disad-vantages. ‘Which is most appropriate?’ would be a better way to perhaps ask this question.”

Strength Machines work on a fixed path, which makes it easier to execute the movement with correct form, even when muscle-fatigue sets in. While this is an ad-vantage, it also becomes a weakness. The fixed movement path makes it difficult to work important stabilizing muscles or uti-lize different planes of motion. Machines are more efficient at isolating muscle groups, which is important for rehabbing from an injury or focusing on a particular part of the body. They are user friendly, but invite serious injury if inappropriate weight and incorrect setting adjustments are used. Free Weights and Bodyweight exercises have greater carry over to what the body does in daily living – they are functional in nature. Movements can be completed in different planes of motion. Since the body is responsible for creating and support-ing the range of motion, free weights involve stabilizing muscles, as well as moving muscles. Learning how to perform each exercise takes time and skill. Precise technique is required to target the muscle and avoid injury. Free weights are versatile, convenient and portable. “As aging adults, issues like arthritis, osteoporosis, joint replacements, back surgeries and rotator cuff tears will dictate whether machines or free weight exercises should be used,” states Fortier. “Sometimes combining both is the best solution.” Trudy Bryson does precisely that, in her weekly workouts. Trudy worked with a Get Fit for Life trainer to devise a collection of machine and free weight exercises for various muscle groups. These exercises work well with issues Trudy faces. Trudy now switches-up workouts, by selecting different machine and free weight exercises with every visit to the gym. The variety of this approach keeps her mentally sharp and physically challenged with each workout.” Whether using machines or free weights, a personal trainer can determine the safest and most effective exercises for a workout. Proper form, breathing, cadence and tech-nique are critical to success. To find out more about personal training services in the Fitness Centers of Sun City, call Get Fit for Life at 623-696-6820 or visit Get Fit for Life, Sun City, on Facebook. Above: Instead of using the Leg Press Machine, Trudy Bryson chose the Dumbbell Plie’ Squat for strengthening quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes.

Did you have a stressful day, or are you experiencing some discomfort that just won’t go away? Massage Therapy could be the solution. It contributes to our healing on many levels, physically, mentally and emotionally creating total healing. A gentle touch from someone you trust can be reassuring, comforting and relaxing. Studies show that individuals who receive a nurturing, loving touch on a regular basis are healthier and happier and cope better with social situations than those who do not.

The human skin is the largest organ in the body and has many sensitive nerve ends. Massage is the best means of offering healing touch therapy to people of all ages. Touch stimulates receptors sites located on the skin. They, in turn, communicate to the brain re-sulting in the release of endorphins, a stress-reducing hormone that helps induce relaxation and improve mental focus.

Three Ways Massage Therapy May Benefit You

1. Increase Your Immune System - Add massage Therapy to your wellness regimen. A healthy lifestyle includes more than just exercise, good nutrition and plenty of sleep. By including massage into your routine, you can further boost your body’s ability to stay healthy and fight infection. A gentle massage can cause an increase in the white blood cells used in defense against diseases. It ensures better body protection at all times. Increased blood flow credited with improved immunity, is achieved through therapeutic touch.

2. Reduced stress levels - Stress can be caused by various circumstances, it can be positively motivated stress such as preparing for a big celebration. Or temporary events such as being stuck in traffic or delayed at the airport. Certain stress-related hormones, such as cortisol, can have negative effects on the body. Massage lowers our stress levels, inducing relaxation and decreasing these hormones.

3. Better sleep - Adequate sleep is necessary for healthy functioning and vital for our health and wellness. Is insomnia a problem for you? Massage therapy can help to improve your sleep patterns. Thus reducing fatigue and contributing to a better quality of life. Touch is essential for the physical and mental well-being of a person. This is a gift of great importance. Offer it to yourself or to your loved one this holiday season.

Massage services are offered at Fairway, Sundial and Bell Recreation Centers (as noted below) for RCSC Cardholders and their escorted guests. If you would like to experience the benefits that massage may have for your physical and mental well-being, call and schedule an appointment today!

Computer Club of Sun City Our members come to our Club in the Fairway Recreation Center to share computer knowledge and experiences, including cur-rent Microsoft Operating Systems, Android Smartphones and tablets in a fun social environment. This includes Windows 10, the Internet, mobile devices, media, home, office and social. Members of the Club can come anytime that we are open and

use our computers in the Member’s Lab to check email, read the news and visit favor-ite websites. They use our scanner to scan their impor-tant documents, precious old pictures, prints, slides and negatives. Classes, special interest group discussions, workshops and presenta-tions are both interesting and educational.

We have two entire classroom equipped with Windows 10 computers and many classes using Microsoft 10 are scheduled. Classes are usually announced at least two weeks before and require club membership. You’ll need to come to the club to register. Sign up early as they do fill up fast.

Our Workshops are focused, informal, hands on, and with smaller groups. Membership is required. Topics of the Workshops are targeted to a specific topic and will be related to PCs or Android Devices. Tables are arranged for members to use with their own laptop, tablet, or phone.

All RCSC cardholders are welcome to join the fun! In December, you can join our Club by attending a short “Join Us” presenta-tion in our Club on any Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Come in anytime between 9a to 10:30a. It only takes a few minutes to join! For more information, call 623-933-8953 or visit our Club Website: www.firstsuncity.com

People, meeting needs of people is what Sunshine Service is all about. Sunshine Service lends medical and children’s equipment to residents of Sun City and we have been doing so for over 54 years. We are a charitable non-profit Arizona corporation and are funded by voluntary contribu-tions and memorial gifts.

While the equipment is available for the use of all residents or visitors staying with residents, the equipment must not be taken out of Sun City on a permanent basis. As a matter of control, equipment is loaned only to Sun City residents.

Records show that as the population of Sun City grew, so did use of our medical equipment. Savings for Sun City residents have been calculated periodically; in 2015, it was estimated that residents saved over two million dollars in cost of equipment for that year alone.

Sunshine Service, Inc has received local, state and national recognition. Awards received include the George Washington Honor Medal for services to the sick and hand-icapped from the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge in Pennsylvania.

GET A $400 TAX CREDITFROM YOUR STATE INCOME TAXESWith Your Donation To Nadaburg Unified School District

Please support this win-win opportunity for Nadaburg students. If you would like to contribute this year, complete the form below and mail it in along with your check before April 15.

ORIGINAL SCHOOL BUILDING

Dear Residents of Sun City,Imagine a child’s eyes lighting up because he just understood what most of the other students learned last week, or they just played a musical instrument for the first time, or they just made their own power point on the computer. All of these things are possible through our tutoring program, music program, and after school fine art programs. Your contribution of tax credit funds will enable our District to keep these important programs going. You can make your Arizona State tax funds work for the academic improvement of students, enrichment programs both as after-school and summer activities. Your dollars open a whole new world to our District, and we thank you for caring about our next generation. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR WORLD AND YOU CAN SAY WHERE YOU WANT YOUR TAX CREDIT DOLLARS TO GO. Every penny donated goes directly into benefiting the children of our District. If you have any questions about this program, please call Ms. Kasia Salamon at school at 623-556-5880.

TAX CREDIT! Thanks to Arizona House Bill 2074 enacted in 1998, taxpayers may receive up to a $400 tax credit on their state Income tax by contributing to Arizona schools if they are married and filing jointly. It will remain $200 if they are single. The program gives a dol-lar-for-dollar reduction of state income taxes. The money must be designated for school-based extracurricular activities.• Checks must be made payable to the Nadaburg Unified School District.• The credit is against taxes. If an individual has no tax liability, a credit will not be available for this year, however, it can be carried forward to later years. • When the check is received, the taxpayer will receive a receipt from a school district official. The district will also notify the Arizona Department of Revenue. When the District receives the tax forms necessary for your tax filing, upon request you will be sent the appropriate forms.
