ST. LUCIE COUNTY —The St. Lucie County Fire

District, along with the 2-1-1Call Center, launched a pro-gram to install 3,206 smokedetectors in St. Lucie Coun-ty residences. The programis funded by a Federal Grant.

“We have had severalrecent fires in which a work-ing smoke detector wouldhave made the difference,”said Deputy Chief BrianBlizzard. “We are confidentthat this program will savelives.”

In addition, 200 smokedetectors for the hearingimpaired will be availableand the call center will alsotake calls for those smokedetectors. Those detectorsfor the hearing impaired willneed to be installed by alicensed electrician.

St. Lucie County firefight-ers responded to a housefire on Feb. 18, which killeda grandmother and grandfa-ther, and severely injuredthe grandson. On April 24,firefighters responded toanother house fire in whichtwo residents sufferedsmoke inhalation and bothhad to be transported to aburn center because of theirinjuries.

“The 2-1-1 Call Center isproud to collaborate with St.Lucie County Fire District tomake smoke detectorsaccessible to the citizens of

St. Lucie County,” saidSusan Buza, executive direc-tor for the 2-1-1 Call Center.“Using the 2-1-1 24-hourtelephone community helpline as the access point willmake it easy for residents.”

In 2011, 132 civilians diedfrom fire-related incidentsin Florida, with 73 percentof those being residentialfires. In addition across thestate, 1,003 civilians wereinjured in fires, with 839 ofthose being in residentialfires.

The smoke detectors areoperated by a 10-year lithi-

um battery, so residents willnot have to remember toreplace batteries every year. They also have a “hush” fea-ture so residents will be ableto temporarily turn off thesmoke detector if there is anaccidental activation.

St. Lucie County residentscan call the 2-1-1 Call Cen-ter to arrange for a smokedetector. The call center willgather information from theresident and then pass it onto the Fire District. Firefight-ers will arrange a time tomeet the resident and installthe smoke detector.

This is the week to rememberHello, everyone.

This is a somber week inSt. Lucie County. In themidst of the festivals, thegraduations and the manyevents filling our scheduleshere, there’s one that every-one should make time toattend.

The coming week marksthe annual Law Enforce-ment Memorial Week. For ahandful of days, the lawenforcement and emer-gency personnel would likeyou to take a few minutes toremember those they havelost.

Whether it be to accident, illness or a tragedy, peoplewho have sworn an oath toprotect us every day aren’twith us.

These are the men andwomen who fight the firesthat didn’t burn down yourhouse, that rushed your rel-ative to the hospital in timeto save their life, and whopulled over and arrestedthat drunk driver before theperson injured themselvesor someone else.

There is so much thesepublic servants do everydaywithout our knowledge, andwithout our thanks. It’s justpart of their job, and they doit willingly, day after day.

There are two memorial

events this week. One is awreath-laying ceremony at10 on Monday, May 13 at theSt. Lucie County Sheriff’sOffice in Fort Pierce. Theother is a memorial serviceat 7 p.m. on Thursday, May16 at St. Bernadette CatholicChurch in Port St. Lucie.

Even if you can’t make it tothe actual events, take amoment on one of thesedays to pause and remem-ber. Or better yet, if you seea local law enforcement offi-cer, firefighter or emergencyworker, tell them thank you.

I’ll make the time for it.Will you?

There are fewer thingsmore sensitive orembarrassing than

having to share yourpersonal credit problemswith a stranger. Havingcredit problems can alsoput many buyers in aweakened and defensiveposition when buying acar.

Many people with bad ortoo little credit feel like thecar dealer is somehow“doing them a favor” byselling them a car and get-ting them financed.

Make no mistake aboutit. A car dealer is probablymaking more money sell-ing a person with bad cred-it a car than one with goodcredit. If you have a creditproblem, go about buying acar with the same care anddue diligence as if you hadthe very best credit. Shopand compare your financ-ing, your interest rate, andyour trade-in allowance.Get at least three quotes oneach of these.

Lenders who specializein lending to those withbad credit are known as“special finance” lenders. Many of these lenderscharge the dealer a largeupfront fee, as much as$2,500. Legally, the dealeris not supposed to add thisfee to the price of the car

you buy but, in the realworld, the price of the car isusually higher as the resultof this fee. In addition to anupfront fee, the interestrates are very high fromspecial finance lenders.Because they anticipate amuch higher amount ofrepossession losses, theymust make more on eachtransaction. Don’t auto-matically accept a dealer’sopinion that you mustfinance through such alender. There are manyconventional banks thesedays that loan to peoplewith bad credit. Their inter-est rates are lower and theydon’t charge large upfrontfees.

There is much fraud inspecial finance lending.Credit applications are fal-sified to show more time onthe job, higher incomes, etc. W-2 forms and checkstubs are counterfeited.Buyer’s orders show acces-sories and equipment thatdo not really exist on thecar. Hold checks or promis-sory notes are misrepre-sented as cash down pay-ment. Co-signerssignatures are forged. Con-federates pose as employ-ers, answering pay phonesto verify employment. These falsifications are per-formed by finance man-agers, salesmen, brokersfor special finance lenders(who are paid on commis-sion) and the customersthemselves.

If you sign a credit appli-cation, be sure that youknow all of the informationon that application is accu-rate. Be sure that youunderstand and agree to all

parts of the transactionincluding down payments, accessories on the car, etc.Never be a party to falsify-ing information to a lenderto obtain a loan. This is acriminal offense.

Advertisements aimed atpeople with bad credit usu-ally exaggerate with claimslike, “We finance every-one,” “Wanted, good peo-ple with bad credit.” “Nocredit, no problem” and myfavorite, “No credit appli-cation refused.” It doesn’tsay your loan won’t berefused, just your applica-tion.

My advice is to ignorethese kinds of ads andthese kinds of dealers.Their strategy is to takeadvantage of people withbad credit who they believewill buy any car, pay anyamount of interest, and anyprofit to the dealers as longas the dealer can get them aloan.

It is common practice inFlorida to encourage thecar buyer to drive the carhome immediately uponsigning all of the papers. Insome states like New Yorkthis is not permitted untilall the car has been regis-tered with the state in thenew owner’s name.

The reason for thisimmediate delivery, com-monly referred to as the“spot delivery,” is to dis-courage and possibly evenprevent the buyer fromchanging his mind. Takingpossession of the car is alegal consideration makingthe purchase more bind-ing.

I recommend that younot rush the purchase orthe delivery. For one thingyou want to be sure thatthe car is exactly the wayyou want it…clean insideand out, all the accessoriesproperly installed, nodings, dents or scratches, and that you have a com-

plete understanding ofhow to operate all of thefeatures of the vehicle.

I mention the risk of the“spot delivery” in this col-umn on buying a car withbad credit because it canbe especially harmful tosomeone whose credit isdenied after the car hasbeen delivered.

You will most likely berequired to sign a “Rescis-sion Agreement” beforeyou drive the car home. This is a legal documentwhich requires you toreturn the car if your creditis denied. You will probablybe told that your credit willbe approved, but some-times the dealer is wrong. The rescission agreementwill have a charge for timeand mileage that you haveput on the car you are driv-ing. Usually this is a veryhigh charge from 25 centsper mile plus $50 per dayand higher. It can takeweeks for a special financelender to rule on a creditapplication. If your creditis denied you could owethe dealer thousands ofdollars which the downpayment you made mightnot even cover.

As frightening as all ofthe above may sound, theone single thing you can doto prevent bad things fromhappening when you pur-chase a car is to chooseyour car dealer very care-fully.

How long has he been inbusiness? What is his trackrecord with the BetterBusiness Bureau, theCounty Office for Con-sumer Affairs, and theFlorida Attorney General’sOffice? Ask friends, neigh-bors, or relatives who havedealt with this car dealerwhat their experienceshave been like. Choosing agood dealer with integritywill resolve 95 percent ofall your concerns.

“We’re very excited,” saidKrista Garofalo, communi-cations officer for TreasureCoast Food Bank. “It’s a

largest single-day fooddrive.”

According to Ms. Garofa-lo, It is especially neededduring the summermonths, when children arenot receiving school lunch-es and many workers havetheir hours cut backbecause of seasonalemployment.

“The need tends to go upwhen the children are nolonger in school and theydon’t have access to the freeand reduced lunch pro-gram,” she said.

The day of the drive, boththe post office and the foodbank relies on volunteers tohelp with the food drive.

“Generally, the carriershave to make several trips,”

said Mr. Debee. “We’ll havevolunteers ready to help thedriver unload the truck andplace the food into bins. Wehave several retired postalcarrier in addition to familymembers that help us out.”

After the food goes backto the post office, the vol-unteers will load it intolarge trucks to transport itto the food bank, where it issorted and distributed.

Ms. Garofalo said if resi-dents miss the food drive, they can always drop offfood to the warehouse, located at 3051 Industrial25th St. in Fort Pierce.

Informative websiteI do believe that the website vitals.com (I don't use

WWW) could help many in choosing a doctor. You justhave to enter his or her name and the zip code, and youcan find reviews and ratings of that doctor.

I would hope that more people would use this site andenter praises or complaints so the general public couldhave a view on how their doctor or potential doctor is.

If I would have read the comment on my doctor I wouldhave found another one.

Questioning rantsReading some of rants in the Hometown News very

often leaves me wondering if the writers really believe thestuff they’re spewing.

Some blame everything that is wrong with the world onObama. Seriously? How can people be so uneducated?Uninformed? I’m not sure what their problem may be, butwow, take those blinders off. Please.

Buy AmericanI recently had the privilege of touring our beautiful

country, first in a train, traveling up and down the eastcoast, then in a bus, back and forth to Arizona.

Along the east coast, I was warmed by the homey appealof small towns and in the southwest, awed by mountainsrising from the desert.

However, in city after city, I was struck by the numerousabandoned factories and businesses. These crumblingbuildings with their broken windows look like the after-math of a war. The same applies to empty stores in down-town areas, dotting the land like ghost towns.

I would wager that there has been a war, but it did nottake place in the battlefield. It took place in boardroomsand in the halls of Congress, where decisions were made tooutsource our jobs, for cold hard profit and trade dealsthat favor other nations. This has left hard-working Amer-icans to lose jobs, resulting in homes lost to foreclosureand children left to do without.

But, in this high stakes chess game of the rich and pow-erful, we are not helpless pawns. We can fight back withthe “power of the purchase.” I do this whenever I go to thestore by reading labels and buying products that proudlyproclaim, “Made in the U.S.A.”

In the process, I have noticed surprising things. Forexample, why do some stores sell chopped meat contain-ing meat from other countries? Why go through all thetrouble and expense of importing beef when we have somany cattle right here in the good old USA? The resulting

“meat melange” has a stringy texture and an inferior taste. Also, considering the abundance of Florida’s orange

groves, why do some brands of orange juice contain juicefrom faraway places, where sanitation standards mightnot meet ours? Orange juice made only from Floridaoranges gets my vote and earns my purchase.

Looking down at us from their ivory towers, some politi-cians and business people spit the word “protectionist”like it is a curse. To me, it is a badge of honor. We protectour loved ones and homes. Protecting our jobs and chil-dren is a part of this.

Buying one American product at a time, we can rebuildthe nation’s economy and ensure our children's future.

In responseIn response to the blurb in the April 26, 2013 edition

about gun rights and the lack of call to duty. I am a veteranand come from a family of veterans. My grandfather wasawarded the Silver Star in WWII, my dad served proudly inVietnam and myself served six years.

Yes, unfortunately many of our service men and womendid multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, but how muchof that is from funding cuts?

Many of our soldiers were not even outfitted with theproper equipment they needed to survive over there. Onyour right to not have to worry about gun violence, do youhonestly think taking away our guns are going to stopcriminals from using them? Have you seen the statisticsshowing the increase in violent gun crimes in countriesthat have banned guns from citizens? (Hint: they are veryhigh) If the laws that are currently on the books wereenforced, violent crime would be down. Instead, they areswept under the rug and people cry for more laws. Do I nothave the right to protect myself? If you choose to not owna gun, it is your choice. My family, along with countlessothers, has served this great nation to protect our rights tobear arms and freedom of speech.

Allow me the right to exercise my freedoms and not takethem from me because you don't like guns.

Don’t count on the city councilWell, I’ve seen all too many times people going to the

city council for help with the gangs that dwell there. Formneighborhood street walks and go at various times, thiswill serve as a deterrent to these "gangs."

Quit running to the law or public officials. If you needfunds to do this, write to the fed government.

They’re the ones who supply people whom are on wel-fare. Remember those lovely liberal democrats who sup-posedly are going to take care of you with what impover-ished people think is free? They’re the ones who should behelping you to resolve your unfortunate communityissues.

Gangs and dealers are born out of lack of family founda-tion. That’s what this all boils down to, so take ownershipof the neighborhood and patrol it with your caring neigh-bors. That shouldn’t be too hard, or are you going to bereliant on government assistance all your lives?

And while you’re at it, if you know of young friends or thesuch who are having kids just to get extra food stamps andother government assistance, tell them the problems thatit causes.

It’s just wonderful how the ever-so-lovely democratstake such great care and open up opportunity to theimpoverished. The only thing they haven’t done is takethese people to school to get an education. You have tohave an education, basic skills and even perhaps a familyfoundation of love and genuine caring to thrive in thisworld.

This week, I thoughtwe would talk abouthow everything in the

computer is connected. Byconnected I don't mean bywires and other mechani-cal means, but internallythrough the computer'sfiling system.

Often I hear people saythat a particular file, picture or text, "is in myword processor" or "it's inmy e-mail program." Thatimplies that the file inquestion can be accessedonly with that particularprogram. Not so.

Let me explain. Mostprograms on your comput-er are capable of openingdifferent types of files. Forinstance, word processorssuch as Microsoft Word orWorks Word Processor arefor working with text files, while photo editors such asPaint Shop Pro and PhotoShop are just the thing forworking with pictures.

The files themselves arenot stored within theprogram. They are storedsomewhere on the harddrive available to anyprogram capable ofworking with them. Thatmeans you can share filesoften times with manyother programs. All youreally need to know iswhere on your hard drivethe files really live.

For example: "c:\users\owner\docu-

ments\filename.doc"This is an example of a

typical file name completewith its path on the harddrive. The path tells how toget to a files location onthe hard drive.

Let’s take a closer look:The c:\ indicates what diskdrive the file is stored on.Each disk drive on thecomputer, your floppydrive, your hard drive (c:),and your CD-Rom (typical-ly d:), has a letter assignedto it. This is how to tell thecomputer what drive youare working with.

The next part of ourpath, "users\", is the firstfolder or directory.

Just like the manilafolders you use in a filecabinet keep files organ-ized, directories on yourcomputer organize yourcomputer files. Eachdirectory is separated by aback slash (\) and you can

have directories withindirectories.

In our example, the"documents" folder is inthe "owner" folder, whichis in the "users" folder, which is on the “c:” drive.

The last part of our pathis the actual file name.

A typical file namecomes in two parts, thename, separated by a dotand the extension. Thename is what we call thefile when we saved it (afairly important thing tonote when saving). And theextension tells the comput-er what kind of file it is so itknows what kind ofprogram can open it.

Once you know the pathto a particular file, you canaccess it from most of yourfavorite programs.

For instance, say you gota picture e-mailed to youand you want to use thatpicture in a letter you arewriting with your wordprocessor.

The first step in gettingthe picture into your letterhappens when you savethe picture from e-mail.Note the full path and filename when you save it andyou can access it any time.

When you are ready toimport your picture, usethe insert menu (typical onmost word processors) toload your picture. Whenthe dialogue box comes upasking what file you wantto insert, you can type inthe file's full path andfilename or just navigate tothe file by double clicking.

Start in the “my comput-er” window and doubleclick the drive letter andend with the file name (). Iftyping, separate yourdirectories with backslashes and don’t forget the3 letter extension after thedot. Then click OK. Youshould have your pictureinserted into your letter.

As you can see, the pathand file name is enor-mously important. Sooften I hear, "it's on my

Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day?It may come as a surprise to some that the tradition of “Mother’s Day” springs from the ancientcelebration of goddesses and symbols of motherhood. In more modern times, the English began“Mothering Day” on a Lenten Sunday and allowed breaking the Lenten fast with a family dinner, cakes and gifts.

Our first settlers stopped the “Mothering Day” observance as a rejection of the Church of England, and began their own “Mother’s Day” observance many years later. In 1908 Anna M. Jarvis petitioned to have the first official Mother’s Day celebration which occurred on May 10, 1908. Thetradition of flowers being given began with Anna arranging to have white carnations given to allmother’s who attended the celebration. Today the white carnations are used to honor deceasedMothers and pink or red carnations pay tribute to Mothers who are still with us.

Though some feel that the holiday has become too commercial, most appreciate the focus on Momand availability of mom-oriented gifts. Mothers today are able to enjoy not only their children’shandmade cards, but the special brunches, boxes of sweets, the special gifts, jewelry and even special get-away opportunities that focus on Mom.

No matter what you can afford, make sure you make your Mother feel special this Mother’s Day - she will appreciate it!!

Indian River StateCollege graduated itslargest class to dateat Tradition Field in

Port St. Lucie on May4. Although the

Friday, May 3 cere-mony was postpond-ed due to thunder-

storms, a large crowdof family, professorsand friends from St.Lucie, Martin, Indian

River and Okee-chobee counties

gathered on a sunnySaturday morning.

Acouple weeks ago mywife and I had anopportunity to travel

through several areas ofour beautiful state.

We decided to leavetown for a couple of daysand we headed to some

uncharted areas of northFlorida. We visited a veryquaint town called Key-stone Heights. KeystoneHeights is located about 35minutes north ofGainesville and is almostdue west of St. Augustine.

It’s amazing how only afour-hour drive can changethe entire landscape.

I think the first thing Inoticed as we drove northwas that we saw less andless palm trees and morepine and oak. This is

especially true in the smallrural communities that dotthe landscape. Along manyof the rural roads that wehad to travel to get to ourdestination, wildflowerswere in full bloom andadded a breathtaking touchof color to the landscape. We saw plenty of wildpetunia, periwinkle andaster.

In many of the land-scapes of people’s homeswe observed dogwoodtrees and plenty of oaks. The many small ponds andcreeks were brimming withwater lilies and lotus lilies.

Our trip home was just asexciting as we decided tostop at Silver Springs inOcala. This was indeed apleasurable experience.Along with the glassbottom boats that it is mostfamous for, the park boastsacres of colorful walkways. You can find almost anyflower imaginable from themore common impatienceor marigold to the moreexotic varieties such ascoco plum, sable palms(our state tree) and Aus-tralian tree fern. It is truly aplant lover’s paradise.

The final leg of ourjourney took us throughthe picturesque OcalaNational Forest. This is one

of the most scenic drives inthe state with native treesand wildflowers in fullbloom along most of thedrive.

Did I mention the roadhas hills? Yes real hills, something we don’t seemuch of in our area.

To get the Ocala NationalForest take I-95 north intoBrevard County then takehighway 40 west towardsOcala. It will indeed be apleasurable experience!

Getting back to home, Iam going to talk aboutGerber daisies. Unlikemany of the other varietiesof daisies, Gerber daisiescan provide a summer fullof color. They do well in asunny location, but willrequire daily wateringduring the hotter summermonths to prevent wilting.

Gerber daisies also dovery well in containers on apatio or sunny porch.Although they are perenni-als in Florida, they can begrown as annuals in otherparts of the country and

can even be grown indoorsin a sunny window.

When you are shoppingfor your colorful treasures, don’t pick the flowers withthe most open blooms butrather choose the ones thathave plenty of buds. Thiswill ensure a longer bloomcycle. It is a good idea topinch the spent flowers offthe plant as this will help topromote new blooms. Theflowers of the Gerber daisyare great for makingcuttings for your favoriteflower vase.

You should plant yourcolorful gems in well-drained soil in a sunnylocation. As noted earlier, you will need to water yourplants daily and sometimestwice a day during the hotsummer months. Youshould also feed yourplants once a week with agood all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer.

With a little care andTLC, this is one plant thatwill give you many weeksof rewarding color.

Nonprofit receives restaurant grantFor Hometown [email protected]

There once was a timewhen we year-round resi-dents waited for summerbecause the courses wereless crowded and the rateswere low. While we couldenjoy a nice round for a lotless dough than in the win-ter, we never really had achance to “live it up” likethose who had a club mem-bership. Now, we get toenjoy their club while theyare away for the summer. And for a really good price!

In Palm City, you will findone of the area's oldest andmost prestigious clubs, Mar-tin Downs Country Club. The club enjoys a great rep-utation for golf, tennis andsocializing. Now for aboutthe cost of a round of golf ona public track, we meremortal golfers have theopportunity to play at thisexclusive club and, if we’resuitably impressed, becomemembers.

Presently one of the twochampionship courses thatMartin Downs boasts isavailable for play, OspreyCreek. The second course,Crane Creek, was closed afew years back, but newowner Brian Wenrick is seton rebuilding that course'squaint clubhouse, as well asresurrecting the courseitself. Crane Creek is sched-uled to reopen for play atsome point next year.

When you play OspreyCreek, you get a champi-onship course that has host-ed numerous PGA TourQualifying events, juniorchampionships, and highschool and college play. Thecourses were designed bythe late Charles Ankrom, anoted, award-winning inter-national golf course archi-tect, and 30-year MartinDowns resident.

M&W Land DevelopmentCorporation first designedthe master plan for whatwas then called Palm CityRanch in the mid-1970s. Theproject was quite ambitiousfor its day, as at the timePalm City was little morethan ranches and dairyfarms. Construction of theCrane Creek Course beganin April of 1976, and the firstofficial tee shot was struckin December of that sameyear. Reviews were quitepositive from golf writersand golf insiders, and thecourse quickly joined theranks of the top-50 coursesin the state of Florida.

In 1978, First SouthernHoldings, headed by PeterCummings, entered the pic-ture, buying out M&W LandCompany. The first task wasto develop the 2,400-acrePalm City Ranch.

The name Martin Downscame about in an unusual

the tips. This Florida-styletrack features plenty of sandand water nestled betweenpines and palms. Like its sis-ter course, Osprey also fea-tures wonderfully framedgreens' complexes. Onething my late friend ChuckAnkrom prided himself on

doing was using mounds, trees, and bunkers thatallow the golfer to easilyfocus his or her eye on theproper target.

The fairways are wide, and the greens are varied inshape and size. The coursesits atop a slightly rollingterrain with magnificent, mature trees everywhere. On nearly every hole, golferscan also spot numerousbirds and small animals that

call the trees and foliagesurrounding the coursetheir home.

There are dog-legs to theleft, and to the right. Thereare greens that are wide, others that are narrow anddeep. Your mind may wan-der as you take in the flow-ering foliage and nativefauna, but keep your mindon your game when it's timeto swing or you'll find your-self needing a forest rangerfor a guide instead of a savvymember.

Once your round is com-plete, it's time to head to theclubhouse for refreshmentsand something to satisfythat rumble in your stom-ach. The menu is extensiveand the drinks cold andrefreshing. While the won-derfully conditioned coursealone should be enough toget one to fill out a member-ship form, it's head profes-

sional Chris Cravotta andhis eager-to-please staff thatmay seal the deal.

The club is looking forsummer as well as full-timemembers and is invitingpeople to come out andexperience what the clubhas to offer. Best of all, youdon't need to move into theneighborhood to join. Totake your own tour, enjoy around on the Osprey CreekGolf Course and find outmore about the types ofmemberships available, callStacy Weimer at (772) 286-6818, Ext. 202, and schedulea time or visit www.martin-downsgolfclub.com.
