Ever since the invention of the potters' wheel 3500 years BCE and the subsequent invention of the spoked wheel by the Greeks between the fourth and the sixth century BCE, the growing need for speed has been assuming maniacal proportions. A study at the Arkin Mental Health Institute, Amsterdam, has linked the fast pace of life and work in a city with a 39% increase in mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, etc) and 21% rise in anxiety disorders. A University of Kansas study also associated high-speed living with a 20-fold increase in depression over the past century. Constant craving seems to have erased the virtue of contentment from our genes and equanimity (sambhaav) has been cruelly replaced by anxiety!

Isn't it high time for us to relearn and revise our forgotten art of 'perfect equanimity' (remaining emotionally untouched)? A poet describes the state of perfect equanimity as under:

“Look how a mirror will reflect with perfect equanimity all actions before it.

There is no act in this world that will ever cause the mirror to look away.

There is no act in this world that will ever make the mirror say, 'no.'

The mirror, like perfect love, will just keep giving of itself to all before it …”

This art of simply knowing and seeing the self, while living and being is what is known as

'Samayik' in our Jain tradition! Samayik is a process in which the seeker immerses himself in meditation for at least forty-eight minutes after renouncing all attachments and aversions, all sinful inclinations and adopting a sense of equanimity in all objects and all events. Samayik offers the seeker an opportunity for 'being' at once while 'knowing and seeing' ie. being a silent spectator, like the mirror in the above poem, rather than being an 'actor' and indulging in 'doing

and bearing' all the time. It is one of the six essentials (avashyaks) prescribed for both the shravaks (householders) and shramans (ascetics). Samayik not only prevents the influx of karmic particles, averting their future bondage to the soul but also helps the dissolution of the past karmic knots of the soul. Thus it is the principal means to realize the true omniscient, omnipotent and all-blissful nature of the 'self'!Characteristics of a true Samayik:Ÿ Equanimity: Equanimity in life and death, in togetherness and separation, in the unpleasant and the pleasant, in enemies and friends, in happiness and sorrow, is actually a samayik.Ÿ Abandonment of attachment and aversion: Giving up attachment and aversion towards all substances and situations while being absorbed in contemplation (dhyan) of the true nature of the self and having a firm faith in Jain scriptures, is an essential characteristic of a true samayik.Ÿ Avoidance of all sinful inclinations: After abstention of all sensory activities, hibernation of the mind, speech and body and resignation from all sinful inclinations, the seeker is completely immersed in the contemplation and experience of the true nature of the 'self'. This is the real samayik.Ÿ Dissolution in thinking of and being one's true 'self': A True samayik is to keep the mind still through knowledge and the experience firmly anchored in the real nature of the soul.Ÿ Unison with inner discipline, austerity and penance: A Samayik performed by him whose soul is absorbed in spiritual discipline, restraint and austerity, is a true samayik.

Thus, samayik is not just a ritual, it is a state of being, it is not a matter of right 'doing' but of right 'being'. Hence it is for our own real 'well-being' that we must aim to be in samayik in every breath. Next time, we shall learn the types, the flaws and the benefits of a samayik to help us to realise this goal.

Few institutions have shown eagerness to launch it as it is very cost effective, easy to organise, involves youth as it is a subject of their interest and choice and serves many objectives of the community at large.2. REIGNITE- MAKE IT FRIENDLYThis method is to be implemented at individual levels and in the long run will , directly and indirectly, render the desired results. Few decades back marriages were Big Fat Weddings, of course not in monetary terms, but in terms of involvement of number of full families and their participation in marriage preparations and functions. Marriage in a family was a fullfledged social event and a time for merry making. Over the years, due to various factors and social compulsions and developments, the things changed drastically. Sizes of families became smaller. Due to the sizes of the marriage halls, lesser financial budgets, smaller homes etc. all the members of the family could not be invited. So the social practice of inviting one or two members of the family started. This innocuous custom had far reaching social impact over the years and those consequences we are facing at present. When invitees were restricted, the first casualty was the presence of children in the functions as only adults will normally attend them. Consequently, except the youngsters of close families, no other youngster attended. Even if children were invited, the parents couldn't answer an usual question of the children as to, "What will we do there when there are hardly any youngsters in the function?" So this became a no go area. Consequently, youngsters have become asocial and indifferent to the society, which includes community. Can we retrieve or reignite in a friendly way this situation and find a solution to this challenge in the changed and further changing environment because "H$mo{ee' hr ha "g\$cVm' H$m H$maU hmoVr h¡ !

Now a days in the celebration of marriages there are number of functions, especially in reasonably financially sound families. Mehandi, Sangeet/

Dandiya, Marriage, Reception etc. to name a few. May I suggest one more function exclusively for youngsters (both genders) of all the relatives and friends, the seniors of whom have been otherwise invited in some other functions. How and when to do it, what will be its content, size, duration, methodology etc will all depend on the budget and ingenuity of the inviting marriage family. Idea is to provide them a common platform and an occasion to know each other, interact and develop bond among themselves and in turn enhance social fraternity. Sometimes you just need to start and have faith that things will work out. Let us go a little and let life happen. While doing so we have to be prepared to answer the age old dilema of 'whether the hen came first or the egg'. The standard question raised will be "As I do not know many invitees, I will be a stranger." So NO. For this the answer could be as under: "When a child doesn't know how to write ABC, how can he be sent to a School or only when he attends the School, he will learn ABC." Unanimous answer will be to go to school first. Same logic. Unless one goes and meets strangers they will remain strangers. Our children are intelligent and have intrinsic capabilities and once they go and participate, they will definitely cease to be strangers and slowly become friends. And once a vehicle starts in the first gear, other lower gears will follow easily and soon. Huge forests started from a single seed. From small beginnings come great things.

It doesn’t matter what teenagers do to startwith. Any involvement is good. We are sowing the seeds. Later few may become banyan trees of the community and the soc iety. And in their developnent, we will achieve our objective.Apart from marriage celebration, one, including

donors, can create any alibi or बहाना for such get-

togethers and once it kickstarts, the desired purpose will be easy to achieve.

FISCAL DISCIPLINE IN SOCIO-RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONSPART-2 FUND RAISING

Pravinchandra Shamji Dharamashi (Shah),Kothara- Surat.

In majority of the cases, the main sources of fund for such institutions are the contributions by its members. It may be considered as crowd funding by way of donations and regular subscriptions. Some times some non-members like visitors or similar kind of other institutions also donate in cash or in kind. Since the donations from non-members are not in the regular form, they are to be treated as a separate class of fund. Sometimes the donations are given for some specific task or activity and the same must be used for that purpose only. For regular members, it is desired that some minimum contribution be prescribed or specified. When a socio religious institution starts, it does not have any fund. I have come across the cases where the initial contribution is by an individual, family or a group of persons or association of persons. I will share my own experience here. A very successful Jain institute which is operating from Gujarat had come closer to some Jains (mainly from Kutch) during the unprecedented floods of 2006 in Surat. It was decided to form similar institute in South Gujarat; to look after the welfare and interest of Jains from Kutch province, who have migrated to South Gujarat. Initially it was decided to cover Surat and Navsari. In this case 24 persons were selected as Trustees and every one was required to contribute 1000/- Rupees to meet the start up expenses. It started with a bang and even one full page bulletin was published; but after a few meetings it could not function and died in its childhood. I will share yet another example. One of my close family friends was a very active person. He was a Municipal Councilor also and was lawyer too. In 1982, in one family and friend get-together, he floated an idea of formation of a formal Jain Social group; with some like minded and only Jains family. It received the warm support from all of us and it was decided to go

ahead with one time family registration fee and annual subscription. Its idea was to inculcate social bandings among Jains of all sects, with Jain Aachar Sanhita ( ). S>¥_ kdpQpfu Thus the foundation of a Jain Social Group was laid, which is now one of the eight Jain Social Groups functioning in Surat. They follow the system of annual membership fees and one time family registration fees. In our Gnati, there are about 100 plus Mahajan Institutions which are operational. Most of these are funded by our Gnatijans. Some institutions like Panjarapols, Schools and Health Centers which are managed by them may have funding from other communities. But the regular form of membership fees is by way of Mahajan's Lago ( ). It's very nominal, dlpS>__p¡ gpNp¡almost like a token and is annual. I like the idea of this system or practice very much. Although compulsory, it is affordable and non discriminatory. I believe this a perfect and practical method of what is known as

inclusiveness ( ). It's R>¡hpX$p_u ìe[¼s_p¡ `Z kdph¡iminimal and one can contribute more voluntarily. I have illustrated a few methods of funding for Socio-Religious institutions. They can not be universal and exhaustive, as it depends upon the purpose, aims, size and objectives of the particular institution. But some attributes of such funding, as per my thinking are as under.Non-discriminatory: It's uniform for all.Affordable: It must be affordable so that more people can join the Institution. Voluntary: There should not be any element of compulsion, coercion and social shaming for this.Reasonable: It should be reasonable.Justifiable: It should be justifiable, just and be convincing.Logical: It should be logically related to the objectives of the institutions. Pearl in the shell: Welfare of maximum people is the essence of any socio-religious institution.

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men". Child abuse, molestation, harassment of children , pedophilia - these words are very frequently heard, mostly with respect to some shocking incidents , only to slip into oblivion just as fast. There are times we come across instances that sends a chill down our spine. A missing child raped and murdered, an innocent child sexually molested by teacher or uncle, a child labourer beaten or burnt with cigarettes etc... We feel a sense of insecurity, anxiety or at times guilty about whether are we doing enough to protect children. But slowly we push such incidents from our conscious memory by reassuring ourselves that such things happen "out there". As a mental health professional, at Pehechaan, we hear a lot about different kinds of abuse a person goes through, be it male or female, the traumatic experience one goes through is indeed a very difficult one. There are many in the masses who have shared their journey of abuse with us after believing and trusting in us and have healed of their trauma. Abuse is indeed a trauma which the society does not talk openly about. There are many who brush it under the carpet and suffer in silence for the rest of their lives. So let us understand more about child abuse and the different kinds often our society faces. It's Verbal abuse ,Physical abuse, Sexual abuse, Emotional abuse, Medical abuse and Neglect. The dividing line between the first 3 is very thin. Many times it's a combination of all three abuses a child faces. Verbal abuse is very common than we think. Most of the time it's done with good intentions. Any intentional harm or mistreatment to a child under 18 years old is considered child abuse. Child abuse takes many forms, which often occur at the same time. Verbal abuse of children is more common than we think. The sad part is that many a time this abuse is done with good intentions, even with the idea of helping a child. Pointing out to his/her elder sibling and saying "see how well

he/she has studied and made us all proud. Why can't you do that?" This will only make the child inferior and inadequate ( he/she may think that the benchmark of his brother/sister 's performance is too high to achieve), but will also give a strong feeling that parents love is more for him and less for me. Consider these remarks which are said light heartedly by parents: "look at your hair. You look like you have come out of the sewage pipe". Or "How dark you look - I am sure you are not our child, we must have brought you from some orphanage." Even worse are those parents who says "why were you even born? Or " we wish you were dead " These statements even said in jest, and often forgotten easily by everyone but not by the child against whom they were said. Physical abuse. Physical child abuse occurs when a child is purposely physically injured or put at risk of harm by another person. Similarly, physical violence cannot be measured by the amount of hurt it has inflicted. A teacher hitting a child in front of all classmates may be causing more harm to the child's dignity and self-respect, than the palms that received the cane. A strong squeeze of the child 's hand or neck by an elder may make the little one develop a fear that he/she may die with the intensity of the hold- and this fear will linger for life time. Sexual abuse : Child sexual abuse (CSA) is any sexual activity with a child. This can involve sexual contact, such as intentional sexual touching, oral-genital contact or intercourse. This can also involve noncontact sexual abuse of a child, such as exposing a child to sexual activity or pornography; observing or filming a child in a sexual manner; sexual harassment of a child; or prostitution of a child, including sex trafficking. Emotional abuse : Emotional child abuse means injuring a child's self-esteem or emotional well-being. It includes verbal and emotional assault — such as continually belittling or berating a child — as well as isolating, ignoring or rejecting a child. Medical abuse. Medical child abuse occurs when someone gives false information about

illness in a child that requires medical attention, putting the child at risk of injury and unnecessary medical care. Neglect. Child neglect is failure to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, clean living conditions, affection, supervision, education, or dental or medical care. A child who's being abused may feel guilty, ashamed or confused. The child may be afraid to tell anyone about the abuse, especially if the abuser is a parent, other relative or family friend. That's why it's vital to watch for red flags, such as:1) Withdrawal from friends or usual activities.2) Changes in behavior — such as aggression, anger, hostility or hyperactivity — or changes in school performance.3) Depression, anxiety or unusual fears, or a sudden loss of self-confidence.4) Sleep problems and nightmares.5) Frequent absences from school.6) Rebellious or defiant behavior.7) Self-harm or attempts at suicide. Specific signs and symptoms depend on the type of abuse and can vary. Keep in mind that warning signs are just that — warning signs. The presence of warning signs doesn't necessarily mean that a child is being abused. Physical abuse signs and symptoms.1) Unexplained injuries, such as bruises, broken bones (fractures) or burns.2) Injuries that don't match the given explanation.3) Injuries that aren't compatible with the child's developmental ability.Sexual abuse signs and symptoms.1) Sexual behav ior or knowledge that 's inappropriate for the child's age.2) Pregnancy or a sexually transmitted infection.3) Genital or anal pain, bleeding, or injury.4) Statements by the child that he or she was sexually abused.5) Inappropriate sexual behavior with other children.6) A trusted adult exposing himself. A b u s e o f a ny fo r m t h a t h a s s e x u a l connotations can be most damaging to the mind. It can also have a life long effect. This is not to say that every child who is a victim of molestation will suffer in later years. The after affects depends on various factors. The following are some that indicates why a

victim carries the emotional baggage into adult life.• If the abuser was a trusted elder, a feeling of betrayal.• If victim was asked to respect the abuser, a confusion of values.• If the abuser drilled into the victim that she "asked for it", intense guilt.• Mortal fear if the abuser has threatened that if disclosed, he will kill or harm her parents.• A sense of shame for having been violated, since society gives so much importance to virginity and modesty.• The burden of carrying the horrible memories alone if she cannot confide in her near and dear ones.• The added burden of making attempts to disclose, and rather accused of improper behaviour.• A sense of isolation and loneliness, thinking that everyone else in the world is happy and this shameful thing has " happened to me only".Emotional abuse signs and symptoms.1 ) D e layed o r in a p p ro p r iate em o t io n a l development.2) Loss of self-confidence or self-esteem.3) Social withdrawal or a loss of interest or enthusiasm.Depression1) Avoidance of certain situations, such as refusing to go to school or ride the bus.2) Appears to desperately seek affection.3) A decrease in school performance or loss of interest in school.4) Loss of previously acquired developmental skills.Neglect signs and symptoms.1) Poor growth.2) Excessive weight with medical complications that are not being adequately addressed.3) Poor personal cleanliness.4) Lack of clothing or supplies to meet physical needs.5) Hoarding or stealing food.6) Poor record of school attendance.7) Lack of appropriate attention for medical, dental or psychological problems or lack of necessary follow-up care.
