ATHLETICS ANNUAL REPORT 1
LE TTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Thank you so much for your support this year. We could not have achieved the exciting heights we reached without your constant support and enthusiasm.
Throughout these pages you will read about an assortment of accomplishments as we recap the 2016-17 athletic season – but I’d like to hit on some of the highlights.
First and foremost, our goals are to compete in our athletic venues for league championships, NCAA Tournaments births and FBS Bowl bids. Our nationally-recognized men’s soccer program made its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Our track and field program sent individuals through the NCAA Regionals and on to the NCAA Championships for the 10th straight year. Our men’s golf program was represented at the NCAA Tournament for the 13th straight year. Our women’s soccer program won the Conference USA Championship Tournament and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Along the way, we greatly celebrated those student-athletes that earned all-America honors: Brandt Bronico, men’s soccer, Victoria Merriweather, indoor track and field and Caroline Sang, outdoor track and field. We had 11 student-athletes named 1st team all-Conference USA and 11 earned all-region or district honors. Bronico was named the C-USA Player of the Year in men’s soccer while teammate Luke Waechter was named the sport’s Defensive MVP. Martha Thomas was named C-USA’s Player of the Year in women’s soccer and Victoria Merriweather was named the league’s Field Performer of the Meet at the Indoor Championships. Men’s Soccer head coach Kevin Langan was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year.
Several individuals were also crowned Conference USA champions: Seth Gandy, men’s golf; Keon Howe, Indoor track and field (pole vault), Stevan Veselinovic, indoor track and field (weight throw), Victoria Merriweather, indoor track and field (weight throw), Stevan Veselinovic, outdoor track and field (hammer throw), and Ashleigh Handchen, outdoor track and field (3000m steeplechase).
And, finally, several student-athletes reached their ultimate athletic goals by being drafted into professional leagues: Larry Ogunjobi (NFL, Cleveland Browns), Brandt Bronico (MLS, Chicago Fire), Matej Dekovic (MLS, Chicago Fire), Brett Netzer (MLB, Boston Red Sox), Colton Laws (MLB, Toronto Blue Jays), TJ Nichting (MLB, Baltimore Orioles) and Zach Jarrett (MLB, Baltimore Orioles).
We could not be prouder of them and we wish them the best as they pursue their pro careers.
Of course, we also strive for excellence in the classroom and are proud to say that 203 of our student-athletes were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Of those, 43 received a Commissioner’s Academic Medal for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better.
Football’s Lee McNeill was also awarded a Conference USA Post-Graduate Scholarship and two student-athletes were named CoSIDA Academic all-Americans: Callum Montgomery, men’s soccer and Haley Pace, softball.
The growth that we have made. The hurdles that we have cleared. We continue to push forward, striving for excellence on and off the field – and our coaches, athletes and staff continue to respond. But, we would not have the tools and resources to do so were it not for the tremendous support we see on a daily basis from each of you.
We are extremely grateful.
Sincerely,
Judy W. Rose

DONOR LISTING
The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation is the official fundraising arm of the Charlotte
Athletics Department and provides funds for athletic scholarship and facilities for more
than 400 student-athletes. Established in 1969, the Athletic Foundation has developed
into a vitally important support group, pursuing excellence, integrity and pride in the
university’s athletic program. The Foundation sponsors the “Let Me Play” Luncheon in the
fall, 49er Club Golf Outing each April and the Great Gold Rush Auction the first Saturday
following Memorial Day. Friends of the 49ers and 49er Club members are invited to plan
for these three extremely successful and popular events. For more information on these
events or to join the Athletic Foundation, please call (704) 687-4950. Listed below and on
the following pages are the 49er Club members whose combined contributions totaled
more than $6.16 million during the past fiscal year, July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017, both for

SPIRI T GROUPS
• The Charlotte 49ers have some of the nation’s top spirit groups on hand to enthuse and entertain Niner Nation. Charlotte’s marching and basketball band, cheerleaders, Gold Dusters and, of course, Norm, bring their own versions of energy and antics to 49ers home games.
• Over the years, Niner Nation has been treated to national champion caliber performances from the 49ers spirit groups and several of our best have gone on to perform for the professional organizations here in Charlotte.
• While we see them on the sidelines and in the stands supporting our teams, the spirit groups work behind the scenes on their craft to deliver on Game Day.
• In addition, these groups have their own competitions to prepare for. Just as they represent the 49ers well at home contests, they have made a name for themselves at national events.
• The Cheer Squad finished 8th in the Intermediate all-Girl IA division at the 2017 NCA Collegiate National Championship. At the 2017 NDA Collegiate Nationals, the Gold Dusters placed 3rd in Hip Hop 1A category.
• At the end of the 2018 academic year, the Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band will trek to Normandy, France, as they have been selected as the official band to represent the United States in June 2018 to mark the 74th anniversary of D-Day.
• While the 49ers continue to impress at their national competitions, Niner Nation is lucky enough to see their performances up close throughout the school year. Each year, they entertain with great displays of athleticism, grace, humor and music and each year they build on the tradition of giving Niner Nation a first-class atmosphere in which to enjoy 49ers games.
