At around 10 pm on Friday, No-vember 9, Netcare 911 respond-ed to reports of a collision in Ravel Road in Vanderbijlpark. Reports from the scene indicat-ed that two adult male motorcy-clists sustained serious injuries when they collided with each other. The patients were treated at the scene and then transported to hospital for further treatment.
ED up with the high inci-dence of house robberies and other criminal activi-ties, Zakaria Park com-
munity members took the law into their own hands when they confronted three men and ac-cused them of plotting to commit a crime and terrorising people in the area.
Community members set upon the trio meting out swift mob jus-
tice. One suspect was killed in the fracas.
Lenasia South spokesperson, Sergeant Khalipha Mvula said, “We are investigating cases of murder, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, as well as possession of house-breaking im-plements, following an incident that occurred at around 4 pm on Wednesday, November 14, at the corner of Pennyroyal Street and Clove Drive.”
He added, “Police were alerted to an incident where three adult
males were allegedly confronted by members of the community on suspicion that the trio were about to commit an offence in their neighbourhood. Investiga-tions conducted by police at the scene revealed that the white VW Polo sedan that was alleg-edly used by the trio was fitted with false registration plates and had a false licence disc. House breaking implements were found in the vehicle.”The two suspects aged 29 and 35, were immediate-ly placed under arrest on charges
of possession of house breaking implements and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
Lenasia South SAPS acting sta-tion commander Lieutenant Quin-ton Malan condemned the action, of the members of the community who decided to take the law into their own hands.
He pleads with the public to desist from such actions as those who contravene the law will be taken to task. No arrests have been made in connection with the mur-der. Investigations are continuing.
POLICE have launched a man-hunt for the two men pictured.
They are wanted in connection with a house robbery which took place in Lenasia South during the month of October.
At the time of the robbery, four armed men are alleged to have broken into the house and made off with jewellery, cash, cell’ phones and electrical appliances.
Anyone who might know these men is requested to contact the nearest police station or the Le-nasia SAPS on 011-213-6000.
On Wednesday, November 14, a 16-year-old boy was arrested after he was found in posses-sion of a stolen school projector by the schools 'security guard.
The boy was released into the care of his
parents as he is a minor. He appeared at the Lenasia Magistrates’
Court on Thursday, November 14, where the case was postponed.

A sidewalk mechanic was arrested for common assault and theft of coun-cil property in Gemsbok Street in the Lenasia CBD. The suspect had previously
been warned to stop using the sidewalk as his work-shop. He then became ag-gressive and also tried to steal the AARTO book.
N an assessment done by the De-partment of Community Safety, it is safe to say Lenasia is in great hands. An A+ was the overall
achievement for the CPF forum af-ter assessments measuring protocols, procedures, management and its suc-cesses.
Patrol commander, Rashid Adam thanked the patrollers for their dedica-tion to the community.
“We are honoured and privileged to have people like you amongst us. We pray for unity and for continued suc-cess in keeping our community safe. Your efforts are always appreciated.
“The commitment, dedication and efforts of our patrollers in serving our community is being done with integri-ty and adherence to protocols,” Adam said.
CPF Chairperson, Ebrahim Asvat
also thanked the selfless patrollers for the time they give to ensure a better and safer Lenasia.
“We as the CPF have worked tire-lessly to ensure the safety of our community. The guys on the ground are giving it their all, to root out all the bad elements in the area. Kudos to them for this achievement,” Asvat said.

AABERIE Chishty Ambulance Service have issued a press release regarding a Facebook post which accused the or-ganisation of aiding and abetting a man
who is alleged to have caused an accident on Friday, November 9, while under the influence of alcohol.
The post by Facebook user, Disebo Chaka titled ‘Please help find this man’ pictures the man who is alleged to have caused the acci-dent, alongside two vehicles which had been involved in the accident.
Ms Chaka further alleges that paramedics who were called to the scene refused to as-sist her brother who had been injured in the
accident. The man is said to have died at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, as he was only transported four hours later. According to the post, the cause of death was loss of blood.
The Facebook post reads as follows:” “The driver of the vehicle carrying passengers, who is the deceased’s’ colleague requested for the medics to take him to Lenmed hospital as it was the nearest and told them the company (they work for) would cover the expenses as they were still on duty. The paramedics bla-tantly refused and attended to the intoxicated man who caused the accident instead, even though he was not badly injured. He only had a slight sprain in the arm. The paramedics then
helped him escape the scene saying he needed medical attention.”
Aboobaker Sayed, Head of Saaberie Chishty Ambulances, said in a press release, “We are saddened at the loss of life. However, (we) upheld our primary role in this instance and affirm that we acted in line with the require-ments as set out in the HPCSA (Health Prof-fessional Council of South Africa).”
The statement went on to mention that there had been two Emergency Medical Ser-vices Ambulances (EMS) on the scene which had been assisting the injured, including the deceased.
Saaberie Chishty medics first assisted to ex-
tricate a motorist from one of the vehicles. “Bystanders on the scene brought to the at-
tention of our medics that the alleged drunk driver had not yet received medical treatment. As an EMS provider, it is our sole purpose and responsibility to save the lives of those requir-ing medical assistance, regardless of the situa-tion at hand. We are governed by the HPCSA and are required to provide medical assistance to any individual irrespective if the person is under the influence of alcohol or is a suspect at a crime scene,” Sayed said.
Sayed went on to express condolences to the family of the deceased and said he would like to see justice prevail..

The situation regarding Eskom’s coal stock-piles has deteriorated further, with five power stations having less than 10 days’ stock left. Interventions to stabilise the coal supply may only have a positive impact by March next year.
This means that that load shedding is a dis-tinct possibility, Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, told Moneyweb on Sunday.
In the meantime, the power utility is using costly diesel plants to supplement the power generated by its coal-fired stations. It is un-likely to recover this additional cost from tar-iffs and this could result in further deteriora-tion of its finances.
In addition, Eskom got a bloody nose in the High Court in Johannesburg when it tried to force one of its former coal suppliers, which had cancelled its contract with Eskom, to con-tinue supplying coal to its Majuba Power Sta-tion in Mpumalanga.
Kuyasa Mining confirmed to Moneyweb that it had stopped supplying approximately
140 000 tons of coal per month to Majuba, late in October. In court papers, Kuyasa Min-ing accused Eskom of negotiating in bad faith about a sustainable tariff escalation model, and said that the current rate of R12.34 per Gi-gaJoule (GJ), at which Eskom buys coal from the group, is less than the cost of production.
Kuyasa claims that it has been subsidising its coal supply to Eskom by R12 million per month for the past year and that this is ruining the group financially.
The payment terms were 30 days after re-
ceipt of Kuyasa’s invoice.Kuyasa has offered to continue supplying
Eskom until the matter has been settled by ar-bitration, but then Eskom must pay it R27/GJ on a cash-on-delivery basis. No date has been set for the arbitration hearing.
Eskom has rejected this offer and questions the economic hardship Kuyasa claims to have suffered. An affidavit prepared for court by Petrus Mazibuko, an Eskom manager of pri-mary energy, points out that Kuyasa paid its staff members, bonuses of R18 000 each in
2017/18. Kuyasa claimed that the payments were not bonuses, but were for overtime worked.
Moneyweb reported earlier that Eskom had paid its staff members bonuses of R88 000, on average, in July last year and had accept-ed a wage agreement in August this year that included a R10 000 after-tax, “settlement bo-nus” for every one of the more than 33 000 members of the bargaining unit, in addition to a wage increase way above the inflation rate.
Mr Mazibuko said in his affidavit that Eskom could not afford to pay Kuyasa Mining more for its coal and accused Kuyasa of planning to export the coal at a higher price. Kuyasa re-jected Eskom’s poverty claim and referred to the R600 million prepayment it had made to a Gupta-owned coal mine.
In his affidavit, Mr Mazibuko disclosed that Majuba’s reserve stock levels stood at 9.3 days on October 26, and that Eskom was diverting coal from other power stations to the Majuba station.
ON Tuesday,November 13. President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted the resignation of former Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba This was widely welcomed.
Former Minister Gigaba has been under im-mense pressure after the Constitutional Court found that he had lied under oath, and the recent release of a video of him pleasuring himself.
This came on top of serious allegations of his being involved in state capture during the presidency of Jacob Zuma. It is alleged that he granted the notorious Gupta brothers and their families, South African citizenship.
His statement explained in his own words why he had resigned:
“Earlier today, I handed in my resignation as Minister of Home Affairs to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“I did so after a long period of sustained and
vitriolic public attacks on my integrity. I wish to state that my resignation is not an admission of guilt.
“The integrity and public standing of the Government and the African National Con-gress, of which I am a loyal and proud mem-ber, is more important than any individual po-litical office-bearer.
“In this regard, I have filed an application for a judicial review of the Public Protector’s finding with respect to the Fireblade Aviation matter, and I also intend to defend all other matters resulting from my term of office as a member of the Cabinet.
“I was a Deputy Minister from 2004, and have been a member of the Cabinet since 2010. During this period, I have sought to execute my responsibilities to the best of my abilities. In all the departments to which I was deployed, I was privileged to serve with dedi-
cated and capable colleagues and members of the civil service.
“Accordingly, I wish to thank the ANC and the presidents who deployed me in positions of trust and responsibility. My sincere gratitude also goes to the staff and the Directors General of all the departments I have been privileged to lead. In particular, I wish to thank President Ramaphosa for the support and confidence he has shown in me since January this year.
“I wish the President and colleagues in Cabi-net success in their efforts to save the country from the current economic crisis and their on-going work to improve the quality of the lives of our people.
“I remain a committed and disciplined mem-ber of the ANC and will, in the context of the call “Thuma Mina”, continue to execute any tasks that the organisation might deem it nec-essary to instruct me to fulfil.”

OUTH Africa has jumped on the ‘Black Friday’ band-wagon but does one know the true story behind ‘Black
Friday’.Black Friday is not as sunny as
retailers might have you believe. Back in the 1950s, police in the city of Philadelphia used the term to de-scribe the chaos that ensued on a particular day.
Black Friday is also the name giv-en to the start of the great depression after the Wall Street crash in 1929.
One thing to remember is that,
long before the rest of the people started calling it Black Friday, re-tailers hoped to start the holiday shopping season with a bang by of-fering “Can’t Miss” deals right.
People being people, they stormed stores, caused traffic jams and been generally terrible to one another in an effort not to miss these deals.
In the middle years of the twenti-eth century, the scene was particu-larly bad in Philadelphia, where the annual Army-Navy football game was played on the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Lots of cars, lots of traffic, lots of chaos. Sounds familiar?
So at some point in the 1950s or 1960s, some put the date exactly at 1966, the Philadelphia Police Department started to refer to the day after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday,”
“It was not a happy term,” retailer Michael Lisicky told CBS Philly in 2011. “The stores were just too crowded, the streets were crowded, the buses and the police were on overtime and extra duty.”
Real meaning behind 'Black Friday'S

LACK Friday is the annual retail shopping bonanza which falls on Friday, No-vember 24, this year.
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States.
It has been regarded as the begin-ning of the Christmas shopping sea-son in the US since at least 1932. It is a day of big deals, bargains and promotions for American shoppers.
The day has become popular in South Africa.
Prioritise your shopping listList the items you want to buy by
store and then by their importance. Focus on finding the most important items first at each store.
Have a Plan BDue to the sheer number of people
shopping, there will be items that you can’t find or that are sold out. Add other items to your list for this eventuality.
Plan your shopping expeditionOnce you have your list ready, de-
cide which stores you will need to visit first. Start with the one that has your most important item.
Take the locations of the stores into consideration.
Take a friend alongIt’s more fun to shop with someone
close to you, but it’s also more prac-tical. You can split up to find things in different sections of the shop.
No children allowedChildren will be a distraction as
they will want gift that are not on your list. Also, they will not enjoy themselves owing to the crowds, the pushing and rushing around and the time spent standing in queues.
Stick to your budget and pay cash
Before you make your list, you need to decide on your budget. Once that is decided, draw cash. Leave the credit cards at home. You’ll reduce impulse shopping if you only use cash.
Chat to the people in the queueChat with the people around you.
If you see something they have that you want, ask where they found it.
Most people will keep your place in the line for you, while you dash off to get the item.

retired prostate cancer survivor has a message for all men: get diagnosed BEFORE you start having symptoms – early detection will help you beat
prostate cancer. In 2014, Duke Mkhize (now 69) was running
a consumer goods store in Lenasia where he lives. One day, while he was helping to of-fload crates from a delivery truck, he hurt his back. In a great deal of pain, he took himself to Lenmed Hospital, where they diagnosed him with sciatica – an injury to the nerve that runs
from the spine to the legs – and bedrest was recommended.
The doctor said that since Duke was in the hospital anyway, he should have a full medical as well. Duke agreed, and the doctor examined him and ran some tests. He came back with the bad news: Duke had prostate cancer.
“I was so scared it was unbearable,” recalls Duke. “I immediately began preparing for my death. I asked them to let me go, so I could think about my diagnosis and talk to my fam-ily. I brought my three adult sons together and

broke the news to them: ‘Your daddy is going to die.”
After a few days of dwelling on the news, Duke wanted to know more, so he went back to the hospital to find out what would happen next. They told him that the tumour’s growth could be suppressed with medication, and that his diagnosis was probably not a life sentence.
Duke was elated. The medication turned out to be expensive at a private hospital, so he asked for a transfer to the Charlotte Maxeke Government Hospital, where he could receive more affordable treatment.
Unfortunately, because he was sick and re-ceiving treatment, Duke had to stop work-ing and close his business. However, at 65, he could retire, so he relieved himself from the pressures of entrepreneurship. But even though his story is one of endings, there were also new beginnings. With his frequent visits to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, Duke slow-ly became friendly with one of the nurses, Florrie.
“I was just making friends like I usually do.

I didn’t realise that one of them was going to have an interest that ran a little deeper. She started paying attention to me. And from that attention, something more developed.”
At the ripe old age of nearly 70, Duke is en-gaged to be married to Florrie.
He says it certainly helps to have a medical professional by his side. “I realised you feel much better when you talk. And it’s even bet-ter to talk to a person who understands the po-sition you are in – otherwise it’s just like talk-ing to yourself! Talking to her is educational – she comes up with great advice.”
Having experienced first-hand the relief that comes from sharing worries and receiving useful information, Duke has made it his mis-sion to raise awareness about cancer in various communities.
He runs support groups and speaks about the importance of early cancer diagnosis in com-munity centres and churches in Lenasia and Soweto, and runs a support group for people with cancer at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
“The first time we went to one of the church-es, all the men wanted the mammas to go outside. They felt that the women shouldn’t see the photos of men’s parts. I told them it doesn’t make sense, because we are all adults and know what’s happening. Women need to know what their men are going through. If mamma doesn’t know how dangerous cancer can be, she won’t get the message across to her husband and children. It’s important for her to know what’s going on.”
In the end, the men agreed to let the women stay, and Duke is proud of the levels of aware-ness he is creating in the communities he visits.
“Men believe that they have to be sick to go to hospital. My point to them is don’t wait un-til you are sick. If you wait until you are sick, you might not return. Get tested for prostate cancer from when you are 40, so you can find out early and beat it. Even if it doesn’t raise its head, go and find out so you can suppress it or stop it in its tracks.”
For men who have received a prostate (or other) cancer diagnosis, he has a message of hope:
“Get tested for prostate cancer from when you are 40, so you can find out early and beat it. Even if it doesn’t raise its head, go and find out so you can suppress it or stop it in its tracks.”
Duke’s healthy lifestyle and positive outlook is a lesson to all men. Although he has had to deal with hearing the news that everyone dreads, he has emerged stronger and more mo-tivated to live life to the fullest, while showing compassion and support for others in the same situation.

PPLES, cabbages, car-rots, lettuce, peaches, pears, plums, spinach, strawberries, table grapes and tomatoes
found at produce markets in Gauteng tested positive for endocrine-disrup-tive chemicals, a study conducted by the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Health Sciences found.
A study conducted by the Univer-sity of Pretoria (UP) into pesticides in fruit and vegetables from fresh produce markets in Johannesburg and Tshwane found that some fruits and vegetables had one to three different pesticide residues which could have harmful effects on the health of any-one consuming them.
The pesticide concentrations ranged between 0.01 and 0.68 mg/kg and included endosulfan, procymidone, chlorpyrifos and iprodione, which when combined form Endocrine Dis-rupting Chemicals (EDCs).
“While these concentration levels were low, these chemicals can work together to produce additive or syner-gistic effects not seen with individual chemicals,” said Prof Tiaan de Jager, Dean of UP’s Faculty of Health Sci-ences. He was addressing the second International Conference on Food Safety and Security, held in Pretoria recently.
A study on the impact of endocrine disruptors on the food chain was conducted by the UP’s Environmen-
tal Chemical Pollution and Health Research and the Institute for Food Nutrition and Well-Being. It was based on the PhD work of Dr Thomas Mutengwe, who was supervised by Prof De Jager and UP plant patholo-gist Prof Lise Korsten, co-director of the Department of Science and Technology-National Research Foun-dation Centre of Excellence in Food Security.
Her research focused on 27 fruits including apples, pears, plums and strawberries and 26 vegetables in-cluding cabbages, carrots, lettuce and tomatoes, as these are the most com-monly purchased fresh produce.
The pesticides found in this study
have endocrine disruptive effects, which means that they can act as the hormone estrogen and that they can interfere with normal hormonal pro-cesses in humans.
Prof De Jager explained that this can affect many different hormone-dependent processes in the body in-cluding reproduction.
Estrogenic activity (when the body mistakes these endocrine disrupting chemicals for a female hormone), was detected in fourteen samples of fruit and vegetables namely apples, cab-bages, carrots, lettuce, peaches, pears, plums, spinach, strawberries, table grapes and tomatoes.

Dream, create and inspireUnicorns
andrainbowsChildren often have many questions about the legendary unicorn, including “Can uni-corns fly?” Share this list of unicorn facts with your little ones to pique their imagina-tion and encourage imaginative play.
-Unicorns live in groups of four or five that make up a joyous family.
-The head of the family is an elder unicorn who is hundreds of years old. Other family members include a loving couple and one or two young unicorns.
-Unicorn families spend their lives alone living in peace deep in the forest.
-Unicorns can be any color, from jet-black and brown to dazzling gold, brilliant red or pure white.
-The unicorn’s eyes are sky blue or purple.*While we all know that a pot of gold
awaits the person lucky enough to get to the end of a rainbow, what else do we really know about these candy-colored phenom-ena? There’s more to a rainbow than meets the eye.
-“Rainbow” comes from the Latin arcus pluvius, meaning “rainy arch.”
-In Greek and Roman times, it was be-lieved that rainbows were a path created by the goddess of the rainbow, Iris, linking us to the immortals.
1- The truth is, there is no set number of colors in a rainbow! Each hue blends into the next without a hard boundary, leaving the in-terpretation up to the person who sees it and the culture that has defined it.

Transformer in disguise
Facts about the Bumblebee...Since the dawn of the Transformers in 1984, the spunky little Autobot called Bumblebee has been a fan favourite. Why? He was the underdog.
He was small, and he was one of the weaker Transformers, but his heart was huge and he showed great bravery on the battle-field. As a result, he was an admired and gentle friend not only to humans, but to his peers as well.
And it didn’t hurt that his alternate mode was a cute little yel-low Volkswagen Beetle.
Put on your best yellow suit to get in the mood for Things You Didn’t Know About Bumblebee.

Fun factsN Sunday, November 10, President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique official-ly opened the new road that connects Maputo and KwaZulu-Natal.
Travelling time between Maputo in Mozam-bique, to Kosi Bay, South Africa’s eastern coast border post, will now be drastically re-duced, from six hours to just 90 minutes. This a bonus for the Mozambican tourism industry.
The new road, of 120 km, crosses the larg-est suspension bridge in Africa, which spans 680m and stands 60m above the Bay of Ma-puto. It links the capital to Catembe and to the southern border town of Ponto de Uro.
The Maputo-Catembe Bridge is the long-est suspension bridge in Africa
The Bridge has surpassed the Matadi Bridge in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the longest suspension bridge in Africa. Lauded as Southern Africa’s latest engineering feat, the three-kilometre-long suspension bridge extends for 680 metres over Maputo Bay. It straddles the Espirito Santo estuary, hovering 60 metres above the waters below.
The Maputo-Catembe Bridge has a com-plicated and controversial history
Back in 1989, former Mozambican presi-dent, Samora Machel, had plans for an im-proved transportation network. These plans included a proposal for a bridge as part of Ma-puto’s urbanisation policy. This was endorsed by the World Bank. Because of Mozambique’s civil war, the project was shelved and only resurrected in 2010, when the then Portuguese Prime Minister, José Sócrates, offered to fund the construction of the Maputo-Catembe Bridge. These plans also fell through, giving China an opportunity to fund the project as part of the Links Roads Project. This was also delayed because of the resettlement disagree-ments of the Malanga Locals.

Have you noticed how it’s be-come completely normal to spend the equivalent of one month’s salary or rent on a cell-phone? Get used to it because there’s a new trend among cell-phone manufacturers who are hell-bent on hiking up cellphone prices even more.
Gone are the days when a R16k phone would have to be diamond encrusted or have gold dust in its casing to warrant the prices. These days a R16k cellphone is the latest iPhone XS or the Galaxy Note 9 with no precious stones attached.
If you want extra storage or a better camera the price of the phone keeps going up and we’ve become completely numb to just how expensive cellphones have become.
These crazy price hikes are hap-pening everywhere. In the UK a high-spec phone is a whopping £1,349 and AU$2,199 in Austral-ia. Cnet credits these prices to a larger trend that affects the prices of most phone brands, including Google, Huawei and OnePlus.
This week the Economic Times reported that handset makers are likely to follow in the footsteps of Xiaomi and Realme, and hike prices to meet increased pro-
duction costs due to the falling rupee. They expect Samsung, Oppo and Vivo to follow suit and hike the prices of their existing models. It is said that the 15% depreciation value of the Rupee since the beginning of the year has warranted a 5-8% increase in prices of new models.
Where the cellphones are man-ufactured affects the price of the cellphones. For example, Sam-sung has mobile phone manufac-turing facilities in six countries, namely Vietnam, China, India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Korea. The two plants in Vietnam have a combined annual production capacity of 240 million units. So the prices largely depend on the economic situation in the coun-tries where the phones are made
Other factors affecting prices include the cost of making the product, faster processors, cam-eras, inflation and in South Af-rica’s case the import costs.
Data of 11 cellphone mod-els shows a sharp hike between 2016 and 2018. Analysts say that this trend will continue into 2019 and beyond. Apple has certainly applied these price hikes to other electronic products. The prices of the iPad Pro and MacBook Air have already gone up.
This is why your smart-phone prices keep going up

Corporation was responsible for the construction of the Maputo-Catembe Bridge. It spent $785 million on the bridge, which was opened after four years of con-struction. According to several re-ports, the funding was granted as a loan to the government of Mo-zambique. Many have expressed the concern that this move has created more African countries becoming indebted to China.
The Bridge is part of the Af-rican Continental Free Trade Area
MEC Zikalala said that when South Africa joined more than 50 other African states in sign-ing the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, which is aimed at facilitating a single mar-ket for goods and services on the continent, the Maputo-Catembe Bridge was one of the things that the agreement aimed to achieve.
Crossing the Maputo-Catem-be Bridge will cost motorists
Crossing the bridge will cost lo-cals $2.60 or 158.19 Mozambican Metical. For South Africans, it will cost R37 to cross the bridge.

heat-loving varieties such as coleus, pentas, portulacas, salvias and zinnias. Renew col-our in the landscape by replacing summer annuals that have been damaged by drought, pests or disease.
Removing faded flowers:Removing spent blooms from annuals and
perennials, might encourage more flowers! Called deadheading, this process prevents plants from producing seeds, so they put more energy into producing blooms. Dead-heading also prevents self-seeding.
Watching out for pests:
Like weeding, keeping an eye on pests and diseases in the garden should be done all year, but midsummer seems to be par-ticularly popular time for these problems to appear.
Some of the more common midsummer problems to watch for include:
Black spot, cucumber beetles, grasshop-pers, powdery mildew, rust and tomato blight.
Watering:
If one is experiencing a dry summer, or a dry spell in the weather, one may need to water the garden to keep it looking its best.
Most plants enjoy an average of 2,5 cm of water per week.
When watering, apply the water directly to the ground, rather than wetting the foliage. Water collecting on the leaves could lead to fungal diseases. Soaker hoses are great for this!
Raising the mowerRaising the height of the lawn-mower
blade prevents cutting the lawn too short during hot, dry weather.
Harvesting vegetables
Regular harvesting encourages the plants to continue producing, and limits pests and diseases. Insect pests in particular are at-tracted to overripe vegetables and fruit that fall off the plant and begin to rot.

F you are short on time, or not sure what to do, follow this easy summer gardening checklist to keep your lawn and garden in great shape all season
long.
Mulching: Spreading a 2-inch-deep layer of mulch over the soil is one of the best things a gar-dener can do for his / her garden. The mulch protects the soil, shielding it from the sun. This keeps the spoil cooler, so that plant roots are happier, and prevents moisture loss through evaporation.
Weeding:Many weeds love the summer heat and
quickly grow in size and spread. It’s im-portant to remove them from the garden, because weeds steal moisture and nutrients from the plants.
Many weeds also encourage insect pests and diseases.
Weeds are easiest to pull when they’re
young and small. They are also easier to remove when the
soil is moist. Another reason to remove them while
they’re young, is that one can prevent their setting seed. The old adage, “One year’s weeding prevents seven years’ seeding” is very true.
Add colour with summer annuals:
Once the summer heat arrives, many spring-blooming annuals such as pansies and violas start to fade.
Make the garden look its best by pulling out the spent plants and replacing them with

HE Transvaal Hindu Seva Samaj (THSS) hosted a Havan for the Hindu New Year on Sunday, Novem-
ber 11, at the Gandhi Hall in Le-nasia.
The Hindu New Year, 2075, was welcomed and celebrated with much jubilation throughout Lena-sia with puja, aarthi and fireworks on Thursday November 8.
Each year the Samaj follows this with a mass Havan at the Gandhi Hall on the first Sunday of the New Year. This auspicious Havan is hosted at no cost to the commu-nity and all were welcomed to at-tend. One only needed to call the Samaj to reserve a seat for one’s
family to sit for the Havan, and to receive the blessing of doing puja.
The chairperson of THSS, Sunita Thakordas did the welcomed and gave a talk on unity, youth encour-agement and wishes of prosperity. She also extended her wishes to the broader Hindu community for Diwali 2018 and New Year 2018 during a live-feed broadcast.
Also present was Gandhi Walk Committee chairman, Amit Parb-hucharan and PRO Mahendra Modi. Modi rendered a bhajan at the closing and invited all present to participate in the 34th Annual Gandhi Walk which takes place on Sunday, April 7, 2019. He also mentioned that a charity show will
be hosted by the Gandhi Walk Committee at the Gandhi Hall on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Tick-ets for this show will be available from The Village Bakery in Le-nasia in December. N Sunday, November 11, G4S guards were robbed during a pickup at at the En-nerdale shopping centre.
One of the guards was ambushed by a group of men while exiting a store with an undisclosed amount of money.
“At this stage we don’t know how many perpetrators there were, or whether they had a get away vehi-cle, but we are investigating the mat-
ter,” said Captain Molefe Mokoena, spokesperson of the Ennerdale SAPS.
In another incident, on Friday, No-vember 9, employees at a JET store were held up by armed men in the same shopping centre. According to police, about six men entered the store pretending to be shoppers. One of the men then approached the security guard stationed at the store’s entrance and produced a firearm.
The guard was instructed to point out the manager of the store.
“The store manager was instructed by the armed men to show them the cell phone safe where they took a number of cell phones,” Capt Mokoe-na said.
The men also took cash from the tills before fleeing the scene. A few weeks before these robberies, Pep Store was also robbed.

AMSUNG South Africa in partnership with Habitat for Humanity South Africa is build-ing houses for the Underprivillaged South Africans in honor of Mandela’s legacy. The
houses will restore the dignity of deserving ben-eficiaries. All the beneficiaries are the first time home owners. And they are from three regions in South Africa.
Ten families in Lawley have also received their houses.
Hlubi Shivanda, Business Operations and In-novation Director of Samsung South Africa said, “Partnering with Habitat for Humanity is the per-fect opportunity for us to help build South Africa. Samsung prides itself on supporting communities through employee volunteer programms. Addi-tionally, we wanted to use the Mandela Centenary celebrations to give something back that will sig-nificantly change the lives of many families”.
Habitat for Humanity has the infrastructure that allowed Samsung to get involved in making a real change in the lives of South Africans. One home in particular, is a child headed home.
Shivanda added, “The little boy we are provid-ing housing for was residing in a nearby shack with his grandmother, who sadly passed away re-cently after waiting for an RDP home for years. We feel extremely fortunate we could step in and assist this young child with substantial housing, a
place he can call home.”The official handover of the new homes took
place at a ceremony in Lawley, on Monday, No-vember 12 where the deserving homeowners were presented with their house keys after the ribbon cutting ceremony, officially opening and welcom-ing them to their new houses.
In conclusion Shivambu, “At Samsung, we believe in supporting community enrichment
initiatives such as this, which create decent hu-man settlement for less fortunate communities. Our commitment to opening new possibilities for people everywhere is in line with Habitat for Hu-manity’s mission to promote dignity and support sustainable transformation and development. We are pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity in this remarkable endeavour to making a continu-ous change in the lives of many South Africans”.

Ingredients:1 pound strawberries, hulled and cut into
quarters1 (9 ounce) container blueberries, washed
and dried (remove stems)1 (9 ounce container) raspberries, rinsed
and dried1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese1/2 cup Simply Pure Vanilla Coffee
Creamer Method:Prepare berries and lay them on paper tow-
els to dry while you prepare the cheesecake mixture.
In a medium tall bowl, using an electric mixer, whip cream cheese until it becomes smooth. It may bind up in the beaters, but continue as is and it will loosen up.
With mixer running slowly add creamer to the cream cheese. Add it about a tablespoon at a time and then mix until it becomes a smooth mixture and all of the creamer has combined into the cream cheese. Continue
until all of the creamer has been added to the cream cheese. Whip until smooth.
Combine berries in a large bowl. Gently fold in cheesecake mixture until completely combined.
Chill until ready to serve or serve immediately.
Enjoy!

REYVILLE Primary School held Grade R Graduation ceremony on Saturday, November 10, at the Patidar Hall in Lenasia Extension
3.With the theme around the world, learn-
ers represented their two chosen countries from around the world.
The learners represented their chosen countries by presenting the countries’ flag before revealing information about the country and performing the country's well known dance.
The learners were then presented with their graduation certificates by the school's head master Mr Francis.
Fun and celebration were the order of the day as parents and educators celebrated the learner's achievements.
“We wish the learners well in their future endeavours. This is the first of many gradu-ations to come,” said Mr Francis.
He also took the opportunity to wish everyone who attended, a happy festive season.

E.VE all experienced looking in the rear view mirror, to see a fol-lowing motorist driving far too close to the rear of one’s car. The
driver is most likely in a hurry, and wants to get the slower vehicle out of the way. That’s all very well, but one can’t help feeling nervous when this happens.
What is tailgating?Considered to be aggressive driving behav-
iour, tailgating is the practice of following a car with very little space between the front end of one car and the rear end of the other car.
Beware of falling into the trap of road rageSomeone who is tailgating another motorist
may make that motorist angry. The last thing the angry motorist should do is to tap his / her brakes. This could cause a rear-end accident, and could also trigger serious road rage.
How can one escape from tailgaters?Because road rage tends to be closely associ-
ated with tailgating, it is better to adopt a de-fensive driving style. As soon as one becomes aware of a tailgater, try to move out of the way by changing lanes. Alternatively, slow down gradually, avoiding any sudden braking, and thus encouraging the tailgater to overtake.
Tailgating is illegalAccording to South Africa’s National Road
Traffic Regulations, tailgating could result in
amotorist being fined. In addition, one may be held responsible should there be a collision as a result of driving too close to the car in front.
The law and the 3 second rule are there to help motorists have enough time and distance to react to a possible collision.
What steps are involved in a total stopping distance?
A motorist who has to brake suddenly and bring his / her vehicle to a dead stop, has to consider the following:
It takes 0.75 seconds for the brain to realise that there is serious danger ahead.
Another 0.75 seconds are required for the brain to instruct the motorist to start braking.
The car itself needs 0.05 seconds to respond. The time it takes for the car to come to a
complete stop depends on many factors, such as the speed and mass of the car, the quality of the brakes and tyres, and the type of road surface(Paved or gravel) and its condition (wet or dry).
Why should one always be alert when driving?
When following a car, one cannot always see clearly what is happening on the road in front of that car. Perhaps the car in front has to brake suddenly to avoid something lying in the road, or to avoid an animal that has wandered into the road. If one is following too closely, what might happen next?
What is the 2 to 3 second rule and how is it applied?
This is an international guideline used for safe following distances. Irrespective of speed, It is can be used by noting the position of a pole or a tree on the side of the road, and the moment that the vehicle ahead passes this object.
The instant the vehicle does so, one starts counting off 3 seconds by saying, “Two thou-sand and one, two thousand and two, two thousand and three.” If one reaches that pole
or tree before one has stopped counting, then one is most likely too close to the car in front.
When to apply the rule of 5 to 6 secondsUse the rule of 5 to 6 seconds when driving
in bad weather or at night. This means, in ef-fect, that travelling distances between vehicles need to be doubled.
What if a motorist cuts one off?If a motorist overtakes and cuts one off, ap-
ply the brakes gently and create the required space between the two vehicles.

FunTriAnyone 2018 sees the year off with a bang
with ample drinks and the nec-essary supplements. This time around the inaugural junior race, consisting of a 150m swim, a 11km cycle and a 2.5km run was initiated. Twenty budding Tri Ath-letes ranging from 11 to 16 years participated.
The junior race began at 6:50 am. The once anxious and wor-ried faces took on a competitive look as they set off into the dam for the first event of the Tri in ideal weather.
The excellent work by the 'Lin-den Life Saving Club' ensured a safe swim for all. Ziyaad Kharwa was the first to swim out, fol-lowed by a chase group led by Tayba Sallie.
A quick transition from the des-ignated bike area saw the juniors putting in some impressive bike splits. Shakeel Sallie, Yusuf Mo-tala, Mika-eel Sallie and Ziyaad
Kharwa posted the fastest bike splits on the day, all averaging close to times of 24 minutes. Once again, the vigilant marshalls ensured the safety of the cyclists.
The final run leg saw Mika-eel Sallie pull away to win in 44 min-utes, followed by Shakiel Sallie with third place Ziyaad Kharwa taking the prestigious podium place.
The female juniors taking hon-ours on the day were Tayba Sallie coming home first, in an impres-sive time of 58 minutes, followed by Attiyah Vallie. Some of the recognised juniors who made up the start list were: Ahmad Hum-dulay, Hamza Motala, Leo Lund, Mohammed Safi, Muhammed, Muhammed AK, Nishal, Rayhaan E, Sabiha, Shivalay, Uwais Salo-gee, Vigio Lund, Yousha Ally and Yumna Kharwa.

at 7am. The 120 eager tri athletes (many of whom were novices) were off in a flash on the 600m swim. The first swimmer out of the wa-ter was a female, swim instructor Jess Dignon, in a time of 6 minutes.
She then led on the bike course (4 x 5km loop) until the final lap when the 'chase group' caught up with her and finally led with Lyle Timm, Mohammed Motala, Shiraz Chotia, Muhammed Theba and Daniel Botha hot on her 'bicycle heels'. The race then became one for the runners as Lyle Timm took the lead un-til the finish, in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes,
Jess Dignon was in placed in an incredible second overall position and first lady home. She said, "I was impressed with the organisa-tion of the event, and with the warm reception of all who attended and the promotion of the event as a sport in the local community."
Nadirshar Khan, popular known as 'Nadi,' chief organiser, and a multiple Ironman finish-er said, "The event is organised to encourage juniors and seniors alike into the sport. The atmosphere is very relaxed with family and friends get to support their athletes at close quarters. We have put in a lot of work into the fun aspect of the event, and we always get a full field which can only accommodate 120 athletes."
Look out for the next event in January 2019 and follow Trianyone on Instagram.
