Manage scope, program and resources.
Focus on deliverables which must be achieved
within certain time and cost constraints.
Responsible for project team and its performance.
Takes a deeper view and deals with more
technical issues.

In the context of a program:
Ensure project delivery is in accordance with
program requirements.
If a project is in delay, develop mitigation
strategies to avoid impact on interdependent
projects and/or overall program.
What is the Role of the Program Manager?
Must have strategic vision of the benefits the program will
deliver. Looks at the bigger picture.
Focus on strategy and implementation.
Program/sequence projects to achieve optimum
outcome.
Must articulate goals and objectives of the program.

Oversee all projects comprising the program to ensure it
achieves its outcomes.
Understand interrelationships and interdependencies
between different projects.

What are the Similarities?
Both are temporary.
Both add value.
Both are managed by a team within certain cost and time
criteria.
Both are aligned to strategic objectives with defined
outcomes.
Both deliver change.
What are the Differences?
A program is strategic. A project is more tactical.
The wider team on a program is bigger.
A program has more uncertainty than a project.
A program is typically longer and often split into
phases.
A program is more susceptible to market changes and
fluctuating business objectives.

Question: Do you have to be a Project Manager before
becoming a Program Manager?
Answer: Not necessarily, however a Program Manager with
Project Management experience is better at:
Understanding the importance of delivery to time and budget
Appreciating the challenges regularly faced during project
delivery
Understanding the complex logistics often associated with
projects
Understanding the impact of project delays and the
importance of mitigation strategies
Understanding the nuances between different projects – no
two projects are alike!
Taking a deeper view when required to help resolve issues on
individual projects to the benefit of the overall program
