UMM Mission Statement The mission of UMM as an undergraduate, residential, liberal arts college is distinctive within the University of Minnesota. The Morris campus shares the University's statewide mission of teaching, research and outreach, yet it is a small college where students can shape their own education. The campus serves undergraduate students primarily from Minnesota and its neighboring states, and it is an educational resource and cultural center for citizens of West Central Minnesota. Through its instructional excellence, its commitment to research, its numerous extracurricular programs and services, and its strong sense of community, UMM endeavors to achieve its place among the best liberal arts colleges in the nation.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MORRIS

Free and enthusiastic expression flourishes at the University of Minnesota, Morris

-a message from Chancellor Sam Schuman The theme of this issue of Profile is "Express Yourself." We are focusing upon self expression in the worlds of politics, the arts and philanthropy. I can certainly testify that free and enthusiastic expression, in all these venues, is flourishing at UMM-indeed, there are occasionally days in my professional life as chancellor when it occurs to me that it might be nice to take a short break from all this vigorous expression!

Fortunately, this mood quickly passes. I recall that a college in which everyone shares the same political perspectives and artistic tastes would be a very dull

place indeed ... and it would be a school in which not much learning was taking place. We need always not just to protect but to encourage the widest (and, yes, occasionally "wildest") freedom of imaginative creation and social philosophy. The very best education takes place in an environment in which a multitude of ideas and arts offer students (and faculty and staff) a variety of choices. It is through such a range of choices that we learn to choose wisely and carefully and thoughtfully. UMM is in no danger of becoming a boring or monolithic place, thank goodness. And that is a reassuring sign of our continued vitality

as the nation 's top public liberal arts college.

Similarly, I believe philanthropy flourishes when donors have many choices, and take the opportunity to study many institutions and programs which compete for their generosity. Obviously, I hope everyone will carefully examine the philanthropic options and then choose UMM as a beneficiary of their giving. Realistically, I know some potential donors will choose to express themselves by gifts to other worthy recipients. Still, I am confident that a careful examination of the value of a UMM education, and the prudent management with which we care for our gifts, will encourage an ever-increasing circle of friends to express themselves by supporting our college.

Thanks once again for all you have done, and will continue to do, for the University of Minnesota, Morris.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MORRIS

A message from Maddy Maxeiner ~iate vice chancellor for external relations and director of fund development Greetings to all of our UMM friends, alumni and donors,

In this annual Honor Roll of Donors issue of Profile, we celebrate the gifts you have given to America's Best

Public Liberal Arts College during the past year. It's also a good time to look forward to the year ahead, and proclaim our intentions to continue UMM's quest to be the best.

Students are our reason for being, and thus our highest priority is to support their academic fulfillment and personal development during this transformational time of life. The heart of UMM's mission centers on "affordable" excellence. We cannot maintain our values as an educational institution if spiraling tuition increases and state budget cuts threaten access by otherwise motivated students. In the coming year, we pledge to increase scholarship resources so that every student with the desire and ability to succeed at UMM has the opportunity to do so.

You will note on page two of this issue that the University of Minnesota is kicking off the largest scholarship fundraising program in its history. The Promise of Tomorrow campaign will double the impact of newly created endowed scholarships by matching the payout from endowed funds of $25,000 or more established during this fund drive. At UMM, we can help hundreds more students if this program is successful. Please let me know if you are interested in learning more about this opportunity.

At UMM, there are about 1,800 reasons to give scholarship gifts. Over 90% of our students qualify for financial aid-more than any other campus of the University. In the coming year, we ask you to consider making a gift to scholarships. Every gift counts toward building our resources. Your gift, given from the heart, will make a difference.

Thank you for your generosity and support. You have strengthened UMM during this past year. In a recent University-wide survey of new graduates, nearly 80% of UMM respondents said they would begin their undergraduate work "all over again" at UMM. Within that same survey, Morris grads were the most satisfied of any campus. Thank you for your outstanding support for these very talented and satisfied learners!

We look forward to the year ahead.

As reported by the University of Minnesota

Foundation:

During fiscal year 2004, July 2003-June 2004, over 1,700 donorsalumni, faculty, staff, retirees, friends of the campus, organizations, businesses, corporations and foundationsexpressed their loyalty and support for UMM and its mission by making a gift to the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Gifts were received in the form of cash, pledges, securities, in-kind donations and credit card transactions. Donors were inspired to contribute to academic programs, scholarships, capital improvements, research and outreach, strategic initiatives and faculty support.

The University of Minnesota has announced the largest scholarship drive in its history with a new program designed to double the impact of gifts for new endowed scholarships.

"At UMM," Chancellor Sam Schuman states, "the Promise of Tomorrow scholarship drive will make a profound difference in the lives of our UMM students. As tuition costs continue to rise throughout higher education, UMM will seek to provide access to an outstanding liberal arts education to every deserving student. Scholarship gifts are the key to this vision. Endowed scholarships are especially valuable, since they provide support to students year after year."

Maddy Maxeiner, associate vice chancellor for external relations and the campus' chief development officer, will lead the scholarship drive on the Morris campus. "Scholarships represent our top philanthropic priority at

grant covered 84% of the cost of a fouryear college education. By 1999-2000, that proportion had dropped to 39%. Scholarships are a critical source of financial help for today 's students. Plus, scholarship gifts help to attract and retain talented students in Minnesota and in our west central Minnesota communities-a people resource which is critical for our future."

Scholarships open the doors of opportunity to students who have the desire and the ability to succeed at the University of Minnesota, Morris, but who may face difficult financial barriers. "I want to insure that every student with the desire and ability to succeed at the U has the opportunity to do so," states University of Minnesota President Bob Bruininks.

Edward and Helen Jane Morrison: key characters in the UMM story Newspaper people like Edward and Helen Jane Morrison know a good story. A narrative with interesting characters, an engaging plot and a lesson to be learned captures a reader's attention. The Morrisons in their roles as avid supporters have been intricately entwined in UMM's story since before its beginning. They recently added another chapter to the campus' chronicle by endowing the Edward J. and Helen Jane Morrison Scholarship.

and publisher of the Morris Tribune. Upon his return from service in the U.S . Navy in 1946, he became a partner with his father. The following year, they purchased the Morris Sun. He assumed leadership of the business when his father passed away in 1954. By the time of his retirement in 1979, he owned several newspapers in west central Minnesota and had served as president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association. Edward and Helen Jane continue to remain active in the Morris business community as part-owners of the Best Western Prairie Inn.

Both Helen Jane and Edward are longtime supporters of their community and of UMM. In the late 1950s, they were members of the grassroots movement that lobbied the Minnesota State Legislature to establish a liberal arts campus of the University of Minnesota in Morris. Edward was one of the founders and a former president of the West Central Educational Development Association.

In UMM's very first year of existence, Helen Jane's efforts helped initiate the fledgling institution 's mission as a cultural center for west central Minnesota. She helped organize an "Artists Course," a season of performances by guests artists that evolved into UMM's annual Performing Arts Series.

A lifetime of UMM student support In 1980 the UMM Alumni Association awarded Edward the Distinguished Services Award and recognized Helen Jane's efforts in supporting the campus. The Morrisons joined the

with a gift of over $100,000. The Edward J. and Helen Jane Morrison Scholarship is awarded to first year students from small towns or rural areas in Minnesota, North Dakota or South Dakota.

The importance of scholarships Helen Jane and Edward have been supporting UMM students through scholarships for over twenty years. They are helping make a UMM education affordable to all students. "Accessibility to a college education was an issue when UMM was established," states Edward, "and it still is today. Helen Jane and I are pleased to help make a UMM education more accessible to students through scholarship support."

Nathan Wood '08, Eagle Bend, was the first Edward J. and Helen Jane Morrison Scholarship recipient. He states with thanks: "It made me happy to learn that I had received this scholarship. It makes it much easier for me to handle my educational expenses. I love the rural life, and it is nice to know that others, like the Morrisons, care about it, too."

A lasting legacy While students complete their academic careers and move on to promising futures , the gifts the Morrisons have made to UMM are unending. As endowed funds, a portion of the interest earned is awarded as scholarships each year, while the principal remains intact. Their gifts become a lasting legacy to their commitment to UMM, a story that continues without end.

Anne and Jim Eidsvold continue tradition of giving Inspired by decades of campus and community connections and their own beliefs about charitable giving, Jim and Anne Eidsvold of Alexandria have established two new scholarships at the University of Minnesota, Morris to recognize the Morris community's role in their lives and to continue their family's long tradition of giving. The two new scholarships-one to be awarded to English majors and one to be awarded to business/management majors-are given in honor of Jim and Anne's children and son-in-law: Philip Eidsvold, Sara Eidsvold Hendrickson

and Jon Hendrickson. "Scholarships recognize students' academic abilities

and interests," state the Eidsvolds. "And students are what the college experience is all about. With our gift to UMM scholarships, we want to help lighten students ' financial loads, and it's exciting for us to be involved in three generations of family giving to the University of Minnesota, Morris."

Jim Eidsvold's grandfather started Henry's Candy Company, a modest "wagon jobber" business, in Morris seventy-five years ago. Following Henry's tenure, Jim's father, Lyman, led the growing company. Lyman and wife Julie were active participants in the life of the Morris community. As members of the West Central Educational Development Association (WCEDA) in the late 1950s, they lobbied for the establishment of a U of M campus in Morris and avidly supported UMM activities and projects, including membership in the U of M 's Presidents Club giving society.

Following in Julie and Lyman's footsteps, Jim and Anne are longtime UMM advocates. The Eidsvolds provided volunteer leadership for the University's recent Campaign Minnesota. They, too, are members of WCEDA, which most recently lobbied for the Regional Fitness Center, the new science building, and renovation of the social science building. "We remember when Morris was seeking to attract the UMM campus," said Jim. "There was a great deal of hard and diligent work put into the presentation by members of the Morris community and area legislators . We feel strongly that UMM has enriched and

positively influenced west central Minnesota." Jim now serves as president of the company his

grandfather founded. Today known as Henry 's Foods and located in Alexandria, the family-owned and operated foodservice distribution business celebrated its seventyfifth anniversary with employees, retirees, friends and family last August.

"Morris and UMM mean a lot to us," shares Anne. "Our children grew up in Morris and had many opportunities to experience programs and events at UMM which added to their quality of life. UMM is important to our whole family. It offers a way for our family to stay connected to the Morris community."

For the Eidsvolds, the excellent liberal arts education UMM provides is an exciting mission to support. "As graduates of small liberal arts colleges, we have experienced first hand the value of that type of education," state Jim and Anne. "We feel a liberal arts education enhances the character of who you are and gives you a discipline in your thought process as you make life's decisions. UMM's commitment to being a leading public small liberal arts college is something we hold dear. It is truly our pleasure to be investing in the best resource of tomorrow-the youth of today."

"Jim and Anne Eidsvold 's generous scholarship gift helps us fulfill UMM's mission to provide an excellent education to every student who has the desire and the ability to succeed," states Sam Schuman, chancellor. "We thank them for their ceaseless and passionate support for the University of Minnesota, Morris."

Diane and Larry Zavadil: community leaders and community builders Community expresses what is important in life to Diane and Larry Zavadil. It is their desire to build community-in their successful business, in the city of Glenwood and in west central Minnesota. And community is at the heart of their gifts to UMM in support of the Rural Students Scholarship Fund and Cougar Athletics.

Returning to outstate Minnesota Larry and Diane both grew up in western Minnesota, Larry in Glenwood and Diane in Marshall. After high school graduation, they left their rural homes for the Twin Cities to pursue their educations. Diane graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Radiology program, and Larry graduated from the U of M, Twin Cities with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism. They began their careers in Minneapolis, but soon after their marriage came to realize they wished for small town life in which to raise a family. They moved to Larry's hometown in 1975.

After a few years of exploring business venues in the Glenwood area, Larry established American Business Forms, a small office supply distributorship, in the basement of his home. Twenty-three years later, the company is an industry-leading distributor of printing, promotions, office supplies, corporate apparel, e-commerce solutions and enterprise-wide document management. American Solutions for Business employs nearly 800 sales associates and support staff throughout the United States, with business in 49 states, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Over the years, the success of the company attracted numerous acquisition offers, but the Zavadils were committed to keeping the business in their community. In 2000, American Solutions for Business became an employee-owned company, ensuring the business will remain in Glenwood. Last spring, Minnesota Senator Cal Larson nominated Zavadil for the Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award, sighting him as a man of integrity and vision: "He is a leader dedicated to giving back to his community." Larry was honored as one of only twenty finalists from Minnesota for the award.

In addition to growing a company, the Zavadils also raised their three now-grown children in Glenwood. Jessica graduated from the South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas, and practices in Houston as a briefing attorney for the 14th Court of Appeals. Joshua graduated from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, and works in securities with Fox and Company in Hermosa Beach, California. Justin followed his father's footsteps to the

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in theatre in 2003.

Supporting the Rural Students Scholarship Diane and Larry's love of small town life inspired them to support UMM's Rural Student Scholarship Fund. Their gift will provide financial assistance to UMM students from throughout greater Minnesota and the upper midwest who wish to live and work in rural communities throughout the state. Students from agricultural or rural backgrounds will be invited to apply for the scholarship by submitting a written essay articulating their interest in living the rural life and building rural communities.

Building community through athletics The Zavadils ' gift to Cougar athletics reflects their belief in the power of athletics to build community. As a Glenwood High School athlete and a football and baseball player for the Gophers in the '60s, Larry enjoyed team camaraderie and witnessed communal pride. A robust athletic program creates excitement for Cougar fans on campus and throughout UMM's extended community of west central Minnesota.

Marion and Doug Payne, 1954 WCSA alumnus, establish Payne Rural Students Scholarship Doug and Marion Payne's rural roots and education prepared them well for a life 's journey that would lead them around the world. The Paynes wish to celebrate the rural experience with today's and tomorrow 's students. They've established the Douglas and Marion Payne Rural Students Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to UMM students with a preference for those from agricultural or rural backgrounds, or UMM students from throughout greater Minnesota and the upper Midwest who wish to live and work in rural communities.

Agriculture is a major theme in the Paynes' life histories. Their "growing up years" took place on west central Minne-sota farms. After attending rural grade schools, Marion graduated from Benson High School and Doug from the West Central School of Agriculture (WCSA), a University of Minnesota boarding high school that made its home on the Morris campus until 1963. Doug's experience at the WCSA, with excellent instructors like Wesley Gray, provided a strong foundation in technical agriculture.

After serving abroad in the military, Doug attended the University of Minnesota on the G.I. Bill and completed a bachelor of science in agronomy in 1960. He was a founding member of the Delta Chapter of Delta Theta Sigma, a professional agriculture fraternity and was elected to Alpha Zeta, an honorary agriculture fraternity.

With a successful agricultural education completed and an interest in foreign affairs and business piqued by military service abroad, the stage was set for Doug to begin a 35-year career with International Multifoods Corporation. He held top leadership roles for the corporation in Mexico, Venezuela, Canada and the United States, specializing in the agricultural products division that includes livestock feed and poultry operations. He currently serves on Mexicana de Inversiones FEMAC SA de CV's board of directors.

Photo at left: Doug and Marion Payne Photo above: Doug Payne is in the back row second from the right in this WCSAMocassin yearbook photograph of the Class of 1954.

The Paynes, who make their home in Edina, are very grateful for their rural backgrounds and for the role the University of Minnesota has played in their lives: "Our gift to UMM and our focus on rural students is based upon our belief that well-prepared

people will be needed to lead their rural communities. It is also in response to the eight years of preparation received from the University system which made our life a reality." The Paynes announced their gift on the occasion of the 50th reunion of the Class of 1954 celebrated during the 2004 WCSAAll-School Reunion held at UMM last July.

Maddy Maxeiner, associate vice chancellor for external relations stated, "We are pleased to announce the Paynes' gift to UMM. We are committed to serving students from the rural areas of the upper midwest as rural students are an important part of UMM's mission and character. The Paynes' scholarship will help us to recruit these students."

"On another note," continues Maxeiner, "it is especially fitting that the Paynes' scholarship endowment is UMM's first to qualify for a new matching scholarship program recently inaugurated by U of M President Robert Bruininks. The U of M Scholarship Drive: Promise of Tomorrow allows the University to match the spendable income of new donor scholarships endowments, thereby doubling the impact of endowed scholarship gifts like that of the Paynes. We are deeply grateful to Doug and Marion for their gift."

Old Fashioned Garden Social celebrates campus history as community gathering place Throughout its history, the Morris campus has served as a community gathering place for social events, educational outreach and cultural activities. This past August, UMM Presidents Club rnernbers and volunteer leaders were invited to an Old Fashioned Garden Social to celebrate our continuing tradition of community.

Although an unusually cool and windy summer evening required a location change from the West Central School of Agriculture Alumni Garden to Oyate Hall, the garden social atmosphere was retained. Fresh-cut garden bouquets graced the tables dressed in vintage linens. Pie and ice cream were served. Songs from a bygone era softly framed the burn of friendly conversation.

Nancy Schuman greeted guests and introduced Chancellor Sam Schuman who shared lines from a letter he received from a 2004 graduate while recuperating from a bicycle accident last summer. The new alumna stated that UMM gave her the power to "change the world." Chancellor Schuman thanked the group for their continuing support of UMM students.

Scholarship Jubilee celebrates scholars and donors Oyate Hall was ablaze with brilliant fall colors and decorations for the Scholarship Jubilee, held in September. Donors, scholarship representatives and recipients, parents and friends gathered to celebrate the success of UMM students and the generosity of UMM donors.

A harvest theme provided a beautiful backdrop for the words of thanks expressed to scholarship donors by Maddy Maxeiner, associate vice chancellor for external relations, and Sam Schuman, chancellor.

Tim Lindberg '06, Roseville, Morris Campus Student Association president, and Shelly Lund ' 06, Andover, Karyn Nielson Memorial Scholarship recipient, represented this year's 160 donor-funded scholarship recipients and added their expressions of gratitude and appreciation for the financial support and the encouragement they have received.

Keng Vang ' 06, St. Paul, received the 2004-05 Nathan Goldberg Scholarship for Community Service. Established by Chancellor Sam and Nancy Schuman, the scholarship honors the memory of Nathan Goldberg, an Army Air Corps pilot who was the first person from Morris to lose his life in World War II. Several members of Vang's family celebrated with him at the Scholarship Jubilee.

Political engagement: a privilege-a responsibility From bumper stickers and lawn signs to paid positions and appointments, the depth and breadth of UMM alumni and student engagement in the political process is impressive. Viewpoints and opinions may dramatically differ, but political expression is alive and well on campus and wherever UMM alumni call home. Here's a snapshot of how UMMers have been involved during this important election year:

Ann Blaisdell '95, Fort Pierce, Florida, states: "I have my 'VIVA Bush' bumper sticker on my car and talk incessantly about the party platforms differences. I've offered to work with the Republican Headquarters in Vero Beach. Last election I voted via absentee ballot because I was in Guatemala, and you know how the State of Florida messed up! This year we will go to Guatemala AFTER the election!" Ann and husband Bill serve as medical missionaries in Guatemala.

Neil Capano '07, Manchester, New Hamphshire, has been involved in politics since his high school junior year when he landed a job in the mayor's office. He's worked on gubernatorial, congressional and national campaigns. Last summer he managed the Republican National Committee office in Manchester. He organized mailings and door-to-door campaigning, and coordinated contracts for campaign resources and phone lines. He has two favorite tasks. "It sounds simple, but I enjoy distributing signs and bumper stickers-the image of a campaign. Everyone can get involved at this level." Capano, UMM's College Republicans chair, believes every level of a good campaign should be volunteeroriented and volunteer-based.

For Neil Capano '07, political signs are symbolically the essence of a volunteer-oriented campaign.

Heidi Frederickson '01, Washington, D.C., is press secretary for the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). The NRSC's purpose is to

Bruce Dokkenbakken '74, Big Lake, attended the Minnesota DFL convention. He reflects: "The convention was more united than I expected. It was about motivating people and sharing views and concerns. exciting. Hearing rising stars like John Edwards and Amy Klobuchar was also a kick. The people were wonderfully openminded and tolerant. There were opportunities to discuss and influence, and be influenced. We got to think, to use those skills that we learned at UMM."

Dokkenbakken is director of the Minnesota Dairy Herd Association (DHIA), a non profit that collects data and milk samples, and provides management information to dairy producers, veterinarians, nutritionists and dairy consultants. The DHIA shares information with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for genetic evaluation programs and to the U of M for research and education. The DHIA is involved in the development of the National Animal Identification System being built to safeguard the health of the nation's herds in the event of an animal disease outbreak by nature, accident or terrorism.

Over the past weeks she has been in Colorado with Senate candidate Pete Coors, in North Carolina with Congressman Richard Burr, in California with former Secretary of State Bill Jones (where she met Arnold Schwarzenegger), in Washington State with Con-gressman George Nethercutt, and in New York at the Republican National Convention. Frederickson shares, "The best thing about my job is that I'm really interested in politics. There are similarities between politics and athletics. It's competitive. There's a goal. There's a deadline, and there's strategy involved. Some elements are out of your control. You just have to deal with it and make the best of some situations. Every day is different!"

Cendy Gonzales '05, El Paso, Texas, served on North Carolina Representative Patrick McHenry 's campaign staff last summer. "The exciting thing about this experience was the possibility of helping to elect the youngest congressman in U.S. Congress. Reviving grassroots efforts and witnessing its effectiveness was also a great victory. The most challenging aspect was the wide variety of different people I rnet. It wasn't always easy to talk to some people, but in the end, it was always rewarding. I experienced first hand the problems that Patrick's constituents face. I gained new appreciation for their work ethic and now understand why Patrick wants to go to Washington and improve their situation. Incredibly, every single person with whom I spoke was already a registered voter who votes in every election. They believe in the system. They don't complain about their situations and problems; they elect people who can fix them. That is what political engagement is all about.

UMM has definitely nurtured my interest in civic engagement. I've had a great advisor-Paula O'Loughlin, great professors, and an administration that supports my involvement in politics, even though they may disagree with what I represent. That's what UMM is all about-diversity. It is a place where a conservative can have a political debate with a liberal whom they call friend."

This fall Gonzales represented the College Republicans at the National Symposium on Youth Civic Engagement in Virginia. During the summer of 2003, she set up new College Republican chapters in the state of California.

Forty Minnesota college students, including seven UMMers, were participants on the "Young Patriots Tour: 2800 Miles for a Stronger America" bus trip. The students campaigned in key states as they made their way to the College Democrats of America National Convention prior to attending events surrounding the Democratic National Convention. UMM students included: Tim Lindberg '06, Roseville; Jen Schreifels '07; St. Cloud, Anthony Cary '04; Forest Lake, Emily Schwieger '07; Nicollet, Isaac Linehan-Clodfelter '07; Lake Crystal, Avi Rosenman '07; Minneapolis, and organizer Sara Kloek '05, Stillwater.

Sara Kloek '05, Stillwater, chairs UMM's Student DFL organization and served as Morris Campus Student Association (MCSA) president last year. She reflects on her political involvement at UMM and as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention: "When I attended my first UMM Student DFL meeting the fall of 2001 , I had no idea how this one event would change my life. I had always been interested and somewhat involved in politics. Three years later, I'm a 2004 Democratic National Convention delegate. My hard work for the Democratic Party, a party that holds ideals similar to my own, paid off. The highlights are too numerous to count, but one was meeting civilrights-leader-turned-congressman John Lewis. Another was the 'electricity' felt in Boston's Fleet Center during past, present and future leaders ' speeches. They gave me hope for my future and hope for our country. I will never forget the experience. I owe a thank you to those at UMM who allowed me to dream big and experience things like the 2004 Democratic National Convention."

Cecilia Kramer '69, Lansing, Michigan, serves in a political appointment made by the Ingham County Drain Commissioner, who is elected on a partisan ballot. As Deputy Drain Commissioner, she oversees a staff of 22 and is the commissioner's chief advisor. Kramer states : "In the world of million dollar housing and commercial developments, environmental interests, farming interests and neighbor-to-neighbor concerns about drainage, the commissioner walks a fine line to mediate special interests and uphold the enabling statutes for programs. The deputy needs to be a trusted ally." Her responsibilities include: writing and reviewing legal documents; reviewing legal descriptions and site plans; and creating and levying special assessments.

Kramer lives in a suburban township outside of Lansing. In regard to local political issues, she tends to vote for the person rather than the party.

Annie Olson '04, field organizer for Senator Russ Feingold's campaign in Wisconsin, coordinates events, recruits volunteers , and plans meetings and conferences for college students. She states: "There's something new to do every day. I believe strongly in what I'm doing, and I feel like I am making a difference. Politics affect your life, and you can affect politics. It might seem like what happens in Washington, D.C. , or the state capital doesn't impact your life, but we all need the same basic necessities: a home, food, a job and education. Even putting in just an hour on a campaign means that you are helping create a future that you can believe in."

Minnesota State Representative Cy Thao '95, St. Paul, was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Diane Tobie Wonchoba '91, Blaine, is a volunteer lobbyist. "I meet with Minnesota State Legislators to discuss concerns regarding deaf and hard of hearing issues, education and healthcare. After many conversations with senators and representatives, participating in Wonchoba

committee hearings and observing 'behind the scenes wheelings and dealings,' I've changed my political views and intend to vote based on my new outlooks."

Curt Yoakum '94, St. Paul, is a policy analyst for the Association of Minnesota Counties which provides research as well as education and training opportunities for county officials. A major component of his responsibilities is representing county interests before the legislature and the administration. He specializes in tax and finance issues.

Prior to this position, Yoakum worked in former Congressman David Minge's Washington, D.C., office as legislative director. He 's enjoying being back in Minnesota for this election: "I thought that I would miss being in D.C. during an election year, but I really don ' t. Minnesota is a key battleground state for the presidential campaign. The state legislature is up for grabs. We in this state have front row seats for the good and the ugly that come with high stakes elections."

Alumni Ken and Kathy Kollodge: artistic expression inspired by people and place

Beauty is truth, truth beauty ...

John Keats

Truth runs through Ken and Kathy Kollodges' life story. For two students of philosophy, all of life's happenings are worthy of introspection. From this life view flows two vibrant, creative spirits.

Learning in and out of the classroom Kathy Gronwold came to UMM in 1963 from Herman, but not by her own choosing: "My parents decided for me. Commuting saved money. I wanted to go to college further away, but after the first few days, I was totally engaged and loved UMM.''

Ken came to UMM from Glenwood after a rough first year at another college where he struggled in the classroom with dyslexia, unrecognized at the time, and out of the classroom with the isolation and regimentation of a men's college. Charles Hanna, director of admissions, admitted Ken to UMM on final probation with only one quarter to improve his poor transcript. He did.

Kathy remembers Ken singing and playing guitar at the freshman bonfire, but they didn ' t meet until the following year in Professor Henry Parker's humanities class. The two young people discovered each other and an interest in philosophy. They also developed a deep admiration for Parker. They remember a debate when Parker and Ray Lammers, professor of theatre, argued the question-"If you had a choice, would you be born or not?" Parker entered the room where the debate was held in a coffin carried on students' shoulders. "He was incredibly entertaining and challenging," states Kathy.

After the two students completed every class he taught, they became personal friends with Parker, which provided more opportunities for learning. "The Parkers were the only black family in Morris," recalls Ken. "For us, they were an easy introduction to the black community." But not for everyone. When their priest learned that Parker was to be the best man in their wedding, he refused to marry them. The Kollodges postponed their marriage and eloped a year later in 1966.

"Yes, he was intriguing because he was black," states Kathy, "but more importantly, he was a fabulous teacher and a remarkable person." Ken thinks of him often: "When circumstances require a debate, I think of Henry and wonder what he would do." The Kollodges recently became reacquainted with Parker who now teaches in the University of Tennessee system.

Ken also credits Ted Uehling, professor of philosophy, for his positive academic outcome. "I took every class that I could from him," states Ken. "He made you want to learn, and he was the most precise handler of abstract esoteric notions in philosophy."

While Ken was becoming UMM's first philosophy minor, Kathy was deciding between a studio art or theatre major. She landed a chorus part in "The

Ken and Kathy Kollodge Boy Friend," under Professor George Fosgate's direction,

and loved it. Lammers, her new advisor, wondered what her parents would think if she became a theatre major. "My parents loved music, dance and movies," shared Kathy, "so they thought it was ok. Besides, they thought I'd get married and wouldn't need a job!"

After Ken earned a sociology degree and philosophy minor in 1965, he worked at a state hospital and as a juvenile probation officer in Madison, Wisconsin. The couple moved to the Twin Cities and continued their education at the University. Kathy finished a theatre degree with a philosophy minor. Ken completed a masters of arts degree in philosophy and psychology and began a difficult search for a position related to his field.

It was the early 70s. Employment was tight. Ken accepted a factory position that would have an interesting impact on his life. "Blueprints for equipment we built were sketchy at best and frequently nonexistent," recalls Ken. "I suggested we photograph each step as the equipment was built. When a part needed a replacement, the company didn't have to fly a representative to the equipment-now in use thousands of miles away-because the photographs provided documentation." His photographer uncle taught him to process film, and each Friday he was released from manufacturing responsibilities to photograph equipment.

North to Alaska In 1974 Ken and Kathy regrouped. After farming a season with Kathy 's brother near Norcross , they road tripped hoping to determine the next step in life. In a pickup truck with a topper, a mattress and a propane stove, they set out across North Dakota in December. .. with no heat. Three months and 13,000 miles later, they had a plan-Alaska. In an earlier trip, they had visited Ken's parents who moved to Fairbanks. Remembers Kathy: "We were intrigued by the beauty and frontier atmosphere. Ken was 100% convinced, but I didn' t really want to go. I said, 'Well, I can live anywhere for two years.' " Alaska has been home for 29 years.

In Fairbanks, Kathy accepted a secretarial position with a University of Alaska (U of A) Extension nutritionist interested in television production. Quickly, Kathy became on-air talent when they learned of her theatre background. Almost as quickly, Kathy made a discovery, too: "Television is not theatre. The creativity is behind the camera. I started talcing broadcast journalism classes and used my extension work for the material. Eventually, I wrote a grant to fund my work as a TV producer/writer on a nutrition series, 'TASTE,' produced with our PBS station. One show won a Corporation for Public Broadcasting award. My career was on a roll."

Over the next 15 years, Kathy produced home building shows, a gardenjng series and a mjnidocumentary, "The Caribou People," that won three international awards . An acting and directing background were essential in her career, but Kathy also notes: "My mother always said that I could make something out of nothing. I proved her right many times in my career. Creativity was always the answer to dull material."

Kathy has also been involved in U of A theatre and the Fairbanks Drama Association. In 1978 she was tour director and actress for a children's theatre group: "Ken came along as chief grip and photographer. We chartered a plane and flew to eleven villages in six days . It was incredible. About two days before we got to Point Hope, they received television for the first time. The kids had to decide between live theatre, whlch they loved, or TV. They chose theatre!"

when he was only eight, but Ken has no formal photography education. He does possess an innate sense of composition and imagery that has allowed him to launch a thriving commercial and art photography career.

To date, 3500 Ken Kollodge images have been published in corporate and college publications, magazines and advertisements, and as prints, posters and note cards. Photos have been purchased for the U of A's permanent art collection and for the State of Alaska's museum. Ninety-two U.S. Embassies around the world display a majestic print of Mount McKinley photographed by Ken.

Kathy describes her husband's photography as manifesting "truthfulness." None of Ken's images are manipulated or enhanced. He works in a variety of genres including grand landscapes of Alaska, nature and wildlife, political satire and abstract color.

While Ken continues his calling,

Ken Kollodge photo: University of Alaska students

Kathy has time for new and old loves now that she has retired after 24 years with the University of Alaska. She's painting in acrylics, learning to play piano and writing plays. "Roadhouse Hell" was selected for reading at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez,

Alaska, in 2003. While Kathy's career took off, Ken 's took a few turns. He worked as a carpenter with the Alaska rajlroad and then for the Alaska Department of Labor for several years until he was fired in "a knock-down, drag-out fight," resulting from differences between his values and the department, that led to an Alaska Supreme Court ruling against rum and eventually bankruptcy. Several years later, the Supreme Court reversed the decision. This

In addition, the Kollodges are working on writing criteria for a scholarship they 've established at UMM through a bequest. They are considering an idea to use the scholarship to encourage students who are not philosophy majors to take phllosophy courses. Their goal: "To help students learn how to think."

While Alaska's natural beauty strongly influences their artistic expression, both Ken and Kathy credit people as

Alaska brown bear

extended episode in their lives took a toll, financially and emotionally, but as Kathy states, it reflects their character: "We have constantly struggled to get ahead in our careers without compromising our principles. We are real fighters for what we believe in. It is a struggle for truth that runs through our lives."

Photography: a calling emerges During this time period, Ken was propelled into the life of a professional photographer. His father put a camera in his hands

their inspiration-philosophers, parents, professors and especially the people of Alaska. "There's a vibrancy here we've never seen anywhere else," shares Ken. "They are the most talented and interesting people in the world and very accepting. Fairbanks is a small place-but such cultural diversity, such creativity!"

Although the Kollodges may not always call Alaska homeKathy 's two years have long passed-wherever they go and whatever they write, paint, play or photograph will resonate their uniqueness, truthfulness and wisdom.

Tile Art dedicated in Independence Hall

An untitled photograph by Mandy German '07, Watertown, South Dakota, was chosen as a finalist from over 19,000 entries for the 2004 Photographer Forum's Spring Photography Contest. Her photograph will be included in an annual publication. Last year, German was a finalist in the magazine's Best of College Photography Contest which had over 31,000 entries.

Every August artists and community members gather at Niemackl Lake Park, about 15 miles north of Morris, to smash scrap iron into small bits no larger than two inches wide. They heat the iron to a white-hot 2,750 degrees Fahrenheit, and then pour it, gleaming and glowing, into molds of sand to create more than 100 sculptures. Then they celebrate the shared experience and the creative spirit. One work of art, created by the artists, is permanently installed in the Herman area as a gift to the community and its visitors.

UMM collaboratively sponsors the Herman Iron Pour with Niemackl Lake Park; Herman Development Corporation; Lake Region Arts Council; Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas; and the U of M, Twin Cities.

Last spring a collaborative art piece, commissioned by UMM Residential Life, was dedicated in Independence Hall. Created in the spring of 2003 by students in Teaching Specialist Kevin Flicker's Tilemaking course, the work features elements of the prairie-birds and butterflies, earth and stars, fish and lizards, prairie flowers and mushrooms. The composition is unified by theme and medium, yet each artist's style and creativity is evident in the individual tiles.

The approximately 300 tiles were arranged by Flicker and his students and permanently mounted in Indy Hall's lobby by Dan Payne,UMM Plant Services carpenter.

Jim "Doc" Carlson, professor of music, and 25 UMM Jazzers traveled this summer to Europe to experience the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands and perform in the 38th annual Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Both events provided opportunities to hear outstanding jazz-a truly American musical genre-at an energizing international festival

in an amazingly beautiful part of the world. The 2004 Montreux Jazz Festival drew over 220,000 visitors and performers from all over the world.

"Studying abroad-in this case experiencing jazz at a world-renown venue-provides a new perspective of the world," states Doc Carlson. "It's an eye and ear opening experience."

UMM Jazzers appeared on the Rauvenaz Stage and Pare Vernex at the Montreux Jazz Festival and performed in Rudesheim, Germany, and Brienz, Switzerland, during their ten-day adventure. They also attended outstanding

James Morales, new associate vice chancellor for enrollment, embraces UMM campus and Morris community

Morales

James Morales, UMM's new associate vice chancellor for enrollment, has embraced the Morris community and the Morris campus.

"UMM is a wonderful school and a great place to work, and Morris is a great place to make our home," said Morales with enthusiasm. "It's remarkable how many people have reached out to my wife, Tari, and me, and to our children."

Attracted to UMM's unique mission UMM's distinct mission within the University of Minnesota system piqued Morales' interest in applying for the associate vice chancellor position last spring. In the 1990s, he was employed by the U of M, Duluth admissions office, so he was well aware of UMM's strengths and had already worked with UMM colleagues.

Said Morales, "I don't think that there is any other liberal arts college in the nation that can lay claim to being part of such a reputable university system. The two components together are a very strong, winning combination," added Morales. "That's what attracted me to UMM."

Enrollment expertise Morales brings ten years of enrollment management experience to UMM.

Most recently he served as director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in speech communications from the University of Utah in 1991, and a doctorate in education from the University of Minnesota in 2000.

"One of the most important things that I bring to UMM is the ability to really market this institution from an enrollment perspective and to be able to reach the right audience with the messages about how unique and wonderful UMM is," said Morales.

Morales will work cooperatively with other campus entities and offices to ensure UMM students have the financial support needed. "You can't recruit a student successfully without the right kind of financial support to offer them," he said. "We'll be looking at the use of our financial aid dollars,

our scholarship dollars, to ensure that we're optimizing the awarding of those monies in such a way that makes it attractive and affordable for a student to come to UMM."

Students with goals and aspirations Morales always remembers that enrollment isn't just a "numbers game," it's young people with important aspirations and goals. "These are students who want to do something and be something in life. The work we' re doing at the University of Minnesota, Morris to attract these wonderful students from our local region, from the state, from beyond our borders, is a long-term investment that will pay off year after year after year in the lives of our students and in our communities. That's what enrollment is all about," said Morales.

Candidates sought for openings on U of M Board of Regents Loyal advocates of the University of Minnesota and its mission may wish to consider sharing their time and energy serving the University and the State of Minnesota as a U of M regent. The Regent Candidate Advisory Council (RCAC) is asking accomplished, public-spirited people of vision to step forward now for four seats on the Board of Regents that will open in 2005. Representatives from the 2nd, 3rd and 8th congressional districts and one at-large candidate are being recruited for these important volunteer leadership posts. Regents serve six-year terms. Qualifications include:

•interest in higher education •understanding of the U's role as a land grant and research institution •experience in governing large, complex organizations •a record of civic leadership •integrity and fairness •willingness to devote significant amounts of time to the board's work

Regent candidates may be self-nominated or agree to nomination by a third party. Please take some time to consider people you know who would be qualified to serve as a regent. Election of regents will be conducted by a joint convention of the Minnesota legislature in February 2005 .

UMM achieves U.S.News & World Report top public liberal arts college in nation list

-third consecutive year U.S.News &

World Report in its 2005 rankings

of America's Best Colleges ranked the University of Minnesota, Morris in the top five public liberal arts colleges in the nation. This is the third consecutive year that UMM has achieved this status and the second consecutive year that UMM, the only college in the Midwest on the list, achieved the third top spot in the nation.

"UMM's continued ranking among the very top public liberal arts colleges in America is very good news. It is an important and widespread public recognition of the excellence of our college, its people and its instructional program," said Chancellor Sam Schuman. "And, recognition by U.S. News provides important external validation of what

all of us on campus already know about our educational rigor, our quality and our achievements."

Among criteria that the rankings considered, 68% percent of UMM courses have a class size fewer than 20 students. Student to faculty ratio at UMM is 14:1. In addition, 92% of UMM's faculty are fulltime, and only 5% percent of its classes number more than 50 students.

David Roberts, associate professor of math, assists students in a group setting. Small class sizes contributed to UMM's U.S.News & World Report recognition.

Freshman academic profile is a key quality indicator for U.S. News, a characteristic UMM has consistently demonstrated throughout its over 40-year history. With 40% of freshmen in the top 10% of their high school graduating class, UMM occupies the fourth highest ranking in its tier.

Other colleges included in the top five listing of public liberal arts colleges are Virginia Military Institute, St. Mary 's College of Maryland, the University of North Carolina, Asheville, and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

MSP name change: Multi-Ethnic Student Program As of the beginning of the 2004-05 academic year, Multi-Ethnic Student Program (MSP) is the new name for UMM's former Minority Stu ent Program. Director Aida Martinez states "The name is new, but the Il).ission of · e program remains the same. We continue

to focus on racial/ethnic identity development, recniitment and retention of U.S. students of color, community development, cultural enrichment, academic outt_:each and advocacy."

The name change is a result of the program's efforts to accurately reflect its mission and to open doors to multiracial, bi-racial and multi-ethnic students who identify as students of color.

Shares Martinez, "The term multi-ethnic was chosen rather than multicultural because it accurately describes who we are and who we primarily serve, while multiculturalism is defined as an idea, or a process, or an

educational reform movement. We join the ranks of many ofi ices and programs across the nation that have

om using the term minority when referring to stu olor. We look forward to partnering with

s campus as UMM evolves into a 21st century del."

The n w-name has been endorsed by UMM students of color, administration and MSP staff. The 2003-04 Minority Ii:xperie r.se Committee, which has changed its name to the Multi-EthnicrExperience Committee, was also consulted. Refe en~es to the former Minority Student Program and affiliated committees will be changed to Multi-Ethnic Student Program, and when referring to minority students, the language will change to students of color.

For more information about UMM's Multi-Ethnic Student Program, please call 320-589-6095 or email Martinez at [email protected]. The MSP web pages are located at www.rnrs.urnn.edu/services/msp.

Stahler Prairie Walk Late last summer, a group of prairie affecionnados gathered for a morning walk through the Stahler Prairie. The land, a gift to the University of Minnesota, Morris from Bonnie Stahler '72 and the late Thomas Stahler, is used for UMM biology and ecology field assignments and research.

Margaret Kuchenreuther, associate professor of biology, notes that the Stahler Prairie is a good example of native Minnesota prairie. Prairie plants identified that morning include purple coneflower, smooth blue aster, silky aster, big blue grass, needle grass, rough blazing star and white prairie clover.

Jay Y. Roshal remembered The UMM campus received word last July that Jay Y. Roshal, professor emeritus of biology, had passed away.

Dr. Roshal, one of the original thirteen members of the UMM faculty, was professor of biology from 1960 until 1983 and served as UMM's first Division of Science and Mathematics chair. He is credited with creating the biology major and hiring the science and mathematics faculty who helped establish UMM's reputation as a

Roshal rigorous, academic institution of excellence. Those who remember UMM's early years delight in

telling stories of Dr. Roshal driving to the Twin Cities campus to "borrow" laboratory supplies and equipment for use in his biology classes at the fledgling Morris campus, then later driving 300 miles back to return the equipment.

Friends, family, alumni and colleagues have arranged for a tree to be planted on campus near the science building in memory of Dr. Roshal. He is survived by his wife, Hertha.

University of Minnesota survey confirms Morris graduates pleased with the UMM experience University of Minnesota, Morris graduates are overwhelmingly satisfied with their UMM educational experience.

How do we know? The results of the annual University of Minnesota 2004 Graduate Exit Survey reveals a whopping 94% of respondents rate their UMM experience in satisfactory categories. Morris graduates were the most satisfied with their educational experience than any other college or campus within the University of Minnesota system. UMM has achieved this status all three years that the institution has participated in the survey.

"The unique reference point that these results provide-from the graduates' perspective-is not available in any other third party statements about UM:rvi, including the US.News and World Report rankings," notes James Morales, associate vice chancellor for enrollment.

"UMM students enjoy the best that UMM's small, personal setting has to off er-a rigorous academic challenge provided by outstanding faculty and a vibrant student life experience-on their road to a worldrenowned University of Minnesota degree."

Other positive characteristics confirmed by 2004 Graduate Exit Survey participants include:

• UMM has the highest satisfaction rate within the University of Minnesota in regard to the overall quality of instruction.

• UMM survey participants were especially pleased with the high quality of instruction in both introductory courses and majors.

• UMM students found their courses to be challenging and their faculty to be highly accessible.

Students were especially satisfied with opportunities for personal growth afforded by the Morris campus. Morris students were the most satisfied of all the University of Minnesota campuses in the areas of understanding world events, engaging with arts and literature, developing an understanding of cultural diversity and studying abroad.

-James Morales, associate vice chancellor for enrollment

In addition, students at the Morris campus graduate at significantly higher rates than elsewhere within the University of Minnesota system. Seventy percent of UMM student survey participants graduated in four years or less from the time they started college.

"These results are nothing less than a resounding confirmation for our students and their families of the excellent choice and sound investment they have made in choosing to pursue their higher education goals at UMM," states Morales. "UMM students enjoy the best that UMM's small, personal setting has to offer-a rigorous academic challenge provided by outstanding faculty and a vibrant student life experience-on their road to a world-renowned University of Minnesota degree. No other school in the state, adjoining states, or in the upper Midwest for that matter, can offer these opportunities."

A message from Carla Riley, interim director of alumni relations and annual giving I send greetings as I gaze out my office window at the vibrant fall colors-the maroon and gold worn by many UMM students that is! It's great seeing our colors worn proudly by so many. As an '85 graduate, and now as acting director of alumni relations and annual giving, I share that pride.

Finding myself somewhat unexpectedly in this new position, I am happy to report that there has been a relatively seamless transition, and I was able to get off to a great start with a summer full of exciting alumni events. I was pleased to attend the Cougar Golf Outing in Alexandria on July 9 where I found myself in good company as approximately 100 duffers, I mean golfers, enjoyed the day right into the night. Just one week later I was afforded the opportunity to meet many "Aggies" at my first West Central School of Agriculture reunion on campus July 17. We can all learn something from these folks who know more than a little about the value of staying connected to their alma mater and to each other.

Enter August. Former coaches Al Molde, Rich Glas, Larry Edlund and Doug Dufty hosted a '70s Athletic Reunion in Battle Lake on August 14 during which I was privileged to meet and greet numerous former Cougars

and their guests. Many great memories were shared, and from my perspective, the event was highly enjoyable for all who were in attendance. Finally, having never before been to a St. Paul Saints' game, I jumped at the opportunity to attend a UMM Admissions/ Alumni Association sponsored trip to the August 22 Saints game in St. Paul. Tailgating with prospective students, faculty, staff and alumni; the resounding 12-4 Saints' victory over the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks; and the play-by-play being announced by none other than alum Rusty Kath '03, topped off the event and the summer very nicely.

Now that fall is here, I am looking forward to whatever exciting events are yet to come. I will keep you updated on UMM alumni adventures. In closing, I want to assure you that I am enjoying my new responsibilities as your acting director and pledge to do all I can to secure the link between UMM and her alumni.

Feel free to contact me anytime with questions, concerns or just to say hello! I can be reached at [email protected]

Traversie receives Minority Alumni Mentorship Program Award Larry Traversie ' 00 received a

Minority Alumni Mentorship Program (MAMP) exemplary service award during the annual Gateway Program Brunch in Bloomington in August.

MAMP connects UMM minority alumni with current students to provide information and advice on leveraging knowledge gained through an exceptional liberal arts college education in today's workforce and in today's society.

Traversie, a Minnesota Timberwolves fan relations executive, developed a Target Center tour for UMM students, as well as an orientation to the Timberwolves Fan Relations Department. He also facilitated a summer Timberwolves/ Lynx internship for Donnay Green '05, Chicago. The opportunity allowed Green, a speech communications major, to test skills acquired in the classroom in a real-life experience.

"I really liked the internship that Larry arranged because it narrowed the scope of my post-UMM plans," states Green. "In the future , I'd like to be involved in professional sports in the areas of corporate sales or marketing." Green 's responsiblities included developing and assisting with implementation of group ticket promotions, facilitating post-game group ticket events, assisting ticket sales executives in group and season ticket sales , and providing fans ticket information and customer service.

Traversie also arranged for 2003 Gateway Program students to attend a Timberwolves game last spring. The Gateway Program, celebrating its 10th anniversary, provides incoming minority students opportunities to adapt to the demanding yet intimate UMM learning experience. Students enroll in college level courses and participate in local and regional activities that offer an introduction to college life in a rural environment.

Phi Mu Delta alumni endow scholarship The UMM Phi Mu Delta alumni announce that their scholarship fund-raising project surpassed the endowment level of $25 ,000. ship and social contributions. 1

Phi Mu Delta member Curt Larson '68 reflects on this milestone in the fraternity 's history: "During the 1960s and early 1970s, the fraternity worked hard to be energetic and active students as UMM was getting started. We volunteered around Morris and worked with business people whose vision was to create an educational oasis on the prairie. We remember fondly the small college atmosphere created by incredible students from the true heart of America. We were challenged in this college of liberal arts. We learned that we could lead beyond our neighborhoods, and we've done that."

"Now, it's legacy time," Larson continues. "We want people to know that we 've been successful because of what we learned at UMM, and we want to share our success with today 's young men and women. We want to help students in the name of our two favorite lifetime communities-UMM and Phi Mu Delta. Both taught us that service and scholarship are important."

Phi Mu Delta was founded in 1918 as the first national fraternity to accept men regardless of race or religious affiliation. The Morris chapter was active from 1964 until 1973.

Hausman '86 reflects on career path Tom Hausman '86, a Hancock native, recently began a chief information officer position at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee. His experiences also include director of information technology at Bethany College, West Virginia and director of academic computing at Wartburg College, Iowa. Tom reflects on his career path and the people who encouraged him along the way.

As a first year student in 1981, did you know computer science would be your major? Yes, mathematics and computer science. UMM didn't have an approved CS major, but prospective majors were assured there would be one in time for us to graduate.

How did you become interested in computer science? Hancock High School had a TTY model terminal connected to the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium enabling rural students access to the same computing facilities as larger high schools. Math teacher Francis Van Zomeran encouraged students curious about computing, assisting us on her own time and letting us use the computer during study halls and before classes started. Advanced students had nine weeks of BASIC programming. When the Apple II microcomputers were introduced in 1979, she pulled strings to get me into classes that high school teachers were taking for continuing education. Her mentoring is where I got my start. My interest was not so much driven by career goals but by discovery.

Who contributed to your desire to pursue a career in computer science? Professors Andy and Dian Lopez defined the UMM computer science program. In addition, Andy hired me to work in the computer center. The week before my freshman year started, the student employees received the same training as the staff on the new Vax minicomputer. Dian encouraged the CS students to consider graduate study. Together, they helped the computer science students find good internships.

Tell us about other opportunities that enhanced your UMM education. Another benefit of being a student in a city like Morris is the opportunity to be involved in community affairs. I picked up extra cash teaching Adult Education computer literacy courses. I taught an Elderhostel class and worked two summers as assistant instructor at the Institute for Creative Study (which I enjoyed years before as a student!). I also had an internship with Search Institute in Minneapolis.

What are your responsibilities as chief information officer? The CIO is responsible for policy, strategies, plans, budgets and staff supervision for administrative computing, academic computing, network, telecommunications, printing/copying services, the college web site, audio-visual resources, help-desk operations and institutional research.

How is your work fulfilling? Information technology has become fundamental to the learning environment, and it underlies how we operate college "business," track students, assist students with career goals, target fundraising efforts, etc. It is fulfilling to me to see others succeed. Too often IT folks are contacted only when things go wrong. When we do our jobs well, everyone within the college becomes better at what they do.

What would you share with others considering a career in computer science, especially in higher education? Marv Ott, my mentor and director of computing operations at Wartburg College for 30 years, said, "Be prepared to reinvent yourself every three or four years." He didn't mean a career change, but rather the ability to recharge and reeducate yourself. I echo that sentiment. Transformational technology keeps changing the nature of higher education computing, which in tum changes how students and faculty interact. It is challenging and rewarding to work in higher education, and perhaps it's a calling. One can really make a difference in the lives of students.

Athletics update -Mark Fohl, director of athletics

After a quiet summer, activity in the athletic department picked up dramatically as teams reported for practice and competition began. We are optimistic that 2004-05 will bring continued success in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) for our athletic programs.

There are a number of new staff members in the athletic department this year.

• Rob Sarvis, football defensive coordinator, comes to UMM from the University of Rhode Island where he was an assistant coach.

• Matt Johnson, offensive line football coach and manager of the equipment room, is a 2004 UMM graduate and a four-year starter on the offensive line.

• Neal Hofland, part-time assistant football coach working with receivers, successfully coached at ChokioAlberta High School for many years.

• Lance Mumm, part-time assistant football coach working with the defensive line, played college football at Concordia College in Moorhead.

• Rebecca Witters, part-time assistant soccer coach, is a 2004 UMM graduate of UMM and an outstanding player on the 2003 UMAC championship team.

• Corey Phelps, assistant volleyball coach and head men's and women's tennis coach, comes to UMM from Saint Mary's University in Winona where he served as an assistant coach.

• Jeremy Karger-Gatzow, head cross country and head men's and women's track coach, competed at Harnline University, coached at Bryant College and completed a master's degree at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

• David Molesworth, head swimming and diving coach, comes to UMM from the University of South Dakota where he competed as a swimmer and served as an assistant coach for four years.

The UMM coaching staff is enthusiastic and energized for the Cougars' second year of UMAC competition.

Cougar Football Golf Outing a rousing success in 2004 This year's annual Friends of Cougar Football Golf Outing held July 9 on the beautiful Alexandria Golf Course was the most successful in the event's history. One hundred Cougar football fans participated.

Coach Ken Crandall and his team were thrilled with the support received and look forward to providing their fans an exciting football season. "Our players have been working hard this off-season not only to repeat as UMAC North Division Champions," states Crandall, "but also to make the goal of becoming the UMAC Champions a reality." Next year's golf outing is scheduled for July 8, 2005.

Women's Soccer earns Team Ethics Award UMM Athletics received word last summer that the 2003 Cougar Women's soccer team earned a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Ethics Award as a result of exemplary fair play during the 2003 season. The team received only one cautionary yellow card from refereeing officials throughout the entire season.

Nationwide, of the 44 teams honored with awards, six programs received the Gold Award presented to teams that received no yellow caution cards and no red send-off cards. Thirty teams, including UMM, received the Silver Award, which goes to programs with no send-offs and a maximum of five cautions. Only four other teams in addition to UMM had only one caution. Seven teams with no send-offs and ten or less cautions earned the Bronze Award.

Molesworth named swimming and diving coach in UMM's inaugural season During the interview process for UMM's first women's swimming and diving coach, David Molesworth wowed the search committee with his enthusiasm. Mark Fohl, athletic director, remembers their initial conversations: "David impressed everyone with his passion for swimming and diving. I am very happy to have someone with his knowledge get our program off to a great start."

The Loveland, Colorado native's passion for swimming began a bit later than many swimmers. His father was a middle school swim coach and managed an outdoor pool during the summer, so Molesworth was always around water and loved to swim. But he also loved football and was torn between the two sports. Before his high school senior year, he dedicated himself to swimming.

Molesworth's swimming career blossomed in college under the guidance and friendship of Coach Ron Allen at the University of South Dakota (USD) at Vermillion. "That's where I learned my love for the sport," remembers Molesworth. "I learned so much under Ron 's tuteledge as a student and later as a coach. I learned what it is like to watch students grow and mature, and become the people who they are meant to become. It is very rewarding."

The twelve-time collegiate All-American brings to UMM a remarkable knowledge of national and conference experience. Molesworth capped off his athletic career at USD with a North Central Conference victory and set a school record in the 200 backstroke. He was a member of the record-breaking 200 free relay and 400 medley relay and holds the USD meter record in the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke.

After receiving his bachelor of science degree, Molesworth served as graduate assistant under mentor Ron Allen. He received a master of science degree in athletic administration from USD in 2003. During the 2003-04 academic year he served as assistant coach for the USD swimming and diving teams as well as aquatic coordinator.

UMM's inaugural swimming and diving season Molesworth begins his UMM career with 16 swimmers committed to the inaugural season. The team will compete independently in dual meets, triangular meets and invitationals hosted by UMM and colleges throughout Minnesota and surrounding states. The first home meet is on October 29 against Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

"Its exciting to see such high interest in this new UMM sport," states Sandy Olson-Loy, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. "Sixteen swimmers and divers exceeds our

expectation for this first year. As we aligned our sports sponsorship with our campus resources and with student interest, we believed all the pieces were in place to build a strong program. That said, we were also f arniliar with other Minnesota liberal arts colleges

Molesworth

starting their first season with a roster of six to ten athletes and building from there. We're thrilled to see such high interest from our new and continuing students. Minnesota high school and youth swimmers and divers have enjoyed competing at UMM and describe our facilities as some of the best in the state. I'm looking forward to seeing the first Cougars compete in our pool this month."

An exciting future ahead Molesworth is already recruiting for next year's team. He's looking for talent, but he's also searching for athletes who have the desire and ambition to get in shape-physically and mentally-and to set individual and team goals. "It is a long season," remarked Molesworth, "nineteen weeks, and practice schedules are grueling, so they've also got to love the sport."

Molesworth adds, "At UMM, swimmers and divers get a great education at a great value AND they get to compete-a perfect combination."

A 1970s UMM Athletic Reunion was held August 14 at Stub's Ballroom in Battle Lake. Former coaches (from left) Rich Glas, Al Molde, Larry Edlund and Doug Dufty hosted the reception. Coaches and alumni enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect and to share Cougar memories.

Gift to "Doc Rock" award recognizes field camp as "The Real World" for geology majors When three UMM alumni employed by Geomatrix, a nationwide engineering and geology consulting firm, learned of the new "Doc Rock" award established last year, they arranged for a gift to be made in his memory from their company. Clemens Brauer 's passion for geology and for learning made a mark on their lives, even though two of the three attended UMM after his retirement. The gift from Jim Eidem '93, Grant Ohland '82, and David Richardson '88 is given in thanks for their UMM geology experience and for geology professors who like Brauer embraced the importance of hands-on learning experiences-Jim Cotter, Jim Van Alstine and the late Peter Whelan.

Clemens "Johnny" Brauer, associate professor of geology, began his UMM career in 1966 and retired from UMM in the early 1980s. "Doc Rock," as he was affectionately called, passed away in May 2003. His emphasis on field work as a means of understanding geology inspired friends, colleagues and alumni to establish an award that provides financial assistance to geology students to cover field camp expenses. Grant, David and Jim's academic careers, like so many others, were enhanced by their field camp experiences. They believe practicing classroom learning in a real-world situation is invaluable.

Geology camp: "The Real World" Grant recalls, "Doc Rock's geologic field methods class was invaluable preparation for field camp. Field geology and the ability to apply textbook concepts in the field turned out to be one of the most important aspects of my education. Field camp proved to be one of the most difficult yet rewarding experiences of my academic career. Hiking

and mapping by day followed by drafting and report writing by night was challenging but forced me to stay focused on the big picture. The experience was great preparation for a consulting career in the geosciences."

David adds, "The field camp experience was the first time I put all of the little pieces together and really saw the big picture. It taught me how to work with 'multiple hypotheses' as Jim Van Alstine (JVA) called it. In other words, to keep an open mind to all possibilities so you don't accidentally miss or dismiss a key piece of information."

Jim astutely notes that geology field camp may have been the predecessor to MTV's "The Real World." He remembers his experience: "Putting 40 plus geology students from five or more learning institutions together in a 1920s western-style mansion for a summer to study hands-on geology was a great setting-academically, aesthetically and socially."

All three alumni at Geomatrix value the time, energy and knowledge shared by their professors. Reflects David: "Cotter taught me that geology can be fun. Whelan taught me that, if properly managed and articulated, argument and persuasion were not necessarily bad things in geology. And JVA taught me that I could actually make a living at geology!"

Gifts continue to be accepted for the UMM Clemons "Johnny" Brauer Memorial Award. Donations may be sent to: UMM External Relations, 312 Behrnler Hall, 600 East Fourth Street, Morris, Minnesota, 56267.
