IntroductionAs the shipping industry becomes increasingly more complex and regulated, we know that the ship operators need to choose business partners that they can rely upon. After 36 years at the helm of Thomas Gunn Navigation Services Ltd, steering the company through some stormy times, always managing to bring the company back onto calm waters, through good management, innovative ideas, software development, digital solutions and the retention of long term customer contracts, the company became the world’s most successful International Admiralty Chart Agent, before being sold to new owners in 2012.

Our Challenger software has been designed and developed by Poseidon to provide the Mariner with a simple yet effective solution for receiving weekly electronic Notices to Mariners and Navigational updates, enabling the vessel to remain compliant with maritime regulations at all times.

Functionality

B2B Direct OrderingOur B2B Direct ordering module enhances the navigating officer’s user experience by allowing them to automatically receive permits for AVCS, ADP and e-NPs within seconds of submitting the request, reducing the amount of admin time and therefore allowing more time to focus on navigational planning and bridge watch keeping duties in general. The system can be controlled by enforcing an ordering limit, set by the office based ship manager, which cannot be exceeded on-board meaning a greater degree of control on expenditure levels.

Advantages - B2B customers can have fixed yearly price, by selecting only cells needed for the route and get permits instantly.

- Reduced weekly data file size due to complete control over items which are ordered, meaning no unwanted data for cells which aren’t necessary. - Vessels can request new cells whenever they need them.

How to BuyChallenger is available for a free 3 month trial for either vessel or office use. Please contact us to arrange a trial. The full version is available on an annual subscription, which includes a Certificate for the vessel indicating the subscribed services.

Route PlannerChallenger’s fully integrated Map interface allows the navigating officer to plot the vessels route and calculate which charts are required for the intended passage. Once the waypoints have been entered, Challenger will cross reference the on-board holdings against the built in catalogue, highlighting which navigational products are needed and the ability to order missing items using the basket utility or B2B module. The catalogue comes complete with Admiralty Paper and Electronic charts, Publications and Tidal & Current data.

Customer PortalAll of our Challenger customers can have exclusive access to our Web portal, which provides a comprehensive management facility for Office based superintendents and purchasing staff to monitor all vessel holdings and order statuses.

Our purpose built Warehouse holds a world-wide stock of Admiralty paper charts and publications, readily available for immediate dispatch. These include the full range of Admiralty standard nautical charts, thematic charts, port approach guides, routeing & miscellaneous charts. We can also call upon a Print on Demand (POD) machine which allows us to rapidly produce our own charts at a moment’s notice if needed.

The full range of Admiralty paper publications stocked include mandatory titles such as Sailing Directions, List of Radio Signals, List of Lights, Tide Tables, as well as other Admiralty titles including ‘The Mariners Handbook’, Distance tables and many more

Outfit Management Service & New Build SupplyOur Customer Services team at Poseidon monitor your vessels inventories and review the chart and publication holdings required for safe operation and compliance based on carriage requirements of IMO SOLAS, flag states, operating area, vessel type and your company policy, so you donít have to.

The process is simple - when a new edition of a chart or publication becomes available we will either automatically dispatch it to your preferred delivery location (vessel/agent/office) at pre-determined intervals (usually monthly), or alternatively we can recommend which products are available and allow you to select the exact items required, allowing greater control and input from your side. Whatever method is selected, we will ensure that the customer has a certain degree of flexibility to ensure they are receiving the best possible service for their fleet.

Once the products are delivered on board, we can supply a regular service of Notices to Mariners and Tracings so that the vessel can perform maintenance by themselves, and maintain SOLAS compliance by having direct access to the latest navigational data.

For New Builds, we will design an individual solution tailored to the physical attributes of your vessel, along with Flag State and ship specific requirements, delivered to any shipyard in the world.


Digital Solutions

Poseidon Navigation Services Ltd are authorised suppliers of Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) from a range of manufacturers and can recommend and supply the best solution for your vessel or fleet. The IMO mandate for ECDIS implementation has already had a considerable impact on the technology used for modern navigation, leading vessels which fall under the mandate to comply with the carriage requirements for ECDIS within a certain date, meaning that hardware, software and training considerations are required. Poseidon can help you with the transition to digital navigation, including converting Paper publications into Digital format.

Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS)

Admiralty Vector Chart Service comprises electronic navigational charts (ENCs) from national hydrographic offices from around the globe and new electronic navigation chart coverage produced by the ADMIRALTY (UKHO) in co-operation with international governments to provide comprehensive and official worldwide coverage. AVCS is compatible with all type approved ECDIS and holds over 11,000 ENC’s including coverage of most of the world's major ports.

C-Map ENC’sC-Map ENCs are made up of ENC data produced and approved by official hydrographic offices and distributed on a type approved SENC format, ready to be installed on type approved ECDIS. The supply is authorized and complies with all official regulations and requirements related to distribution and usage of official electronic navigational charts

Admiralty Digital Publications - ADPAdmiralty Digital Publications (ADP) are a fully approved digital version of the UKHO's paper Nautical Publications used by mariners around the world. ADP meets SOLAS carriage requirements and, depending on a vessels flag state, can replace the requirement for carriage of traditional paper publications. Poseidon Navigation Services Ltd is an approved supplier of ADP and offers the full range of titles which are listed below. The software is supplied on a single CD which requires an annual license subscription, and is designed to be used on a Windows PC.

Admiralty e-NPADMIRALTY e-NPs are electronic versions of ADMIRALTY Nautical Publications, allowing crews to add NM updates faster and more accurately using a small weekly update file. e-NPs are available on a single DVD, and include the following titles in e- book format; All 75 Sailing Directions, The Mariners Handbook, The Nautical Almanac, Ocean Passages for the World, Annual Summary of Notices to Mariners Part 1 and many more.

The IMO Bookshelf is IMO Publishingís new e-reader software. E-reader files are available for all major titles in English. They are replicas of the printed title and can be viewed instantly after purchasing a licence code and downloading the software. The IMO Bookshelf enables you to view all your e-reader purchases in one place and search them simultaneously.

Navigational Instruments & Equipment

We have an extensive range of high quality nautical instruments for navigational purposes, including dividers, plotting tools, writing instruments, chart correction kits and many more items which are essential for everyday use in the chart room on the ships bridge. Our stock also includes equipment such as Ensigns of various sizes as well as International Code flags, National Flags, Binoculars, Flip Cards and a full range of brassware including clocks & barometers. We are also the officially appointed Scottish Distributor for Maritime Progress Signs and Posters.


Chart CorrectingOur chart correcting team are fully trained to UKHO standards and are available for maintaining your vessels chart inventory if you do not have time to maintain the folios up to date. We can also store all inactive chart folios in our warehouse, and correct them to be ready for the next voyager when called upon. In the interests of good seamanship and maritime safety, it is vitally important that all charts are corrected up to date to the latest Notice to Mariners and NP5011 standards, to ensure safety critical information is applied to each chart.


Our MCA qualified Compass Adjuster can provide a service to all Scottish Ports and most other Ports in the UK, with over 37 years’ experience. Compasses can also be taken back to our workshop for repairs if deemed necessary, and we can also provide new and replacement parts for any damaged items. Despite the recent advances in electronic navigation, the magnetic compass is still a valuable aid to navigation, and it is a SOLAS requirement to have it fully adjusted and ready for navigational purposes at regular intervals/events as specified by ISO 25862: 2009 standards.
