Weekly Weather

Summer weather returnsAfter a tumultuous week of unseasonal weather, the sunshine and high temperatures return to Portugal.

LisbonSaturday will be bright and hot

with highs of 30 degrees before cooling slightly on Sunday to highs of 28 degrees thanks to intermittent cloud cover. The remainder of the following week will be very similar with a mixture of sunshine and cloud and daily highs of 29 degrees and nightly lows of 17 degrees.

The northThere is a very slight chance of

rain on Sunday in the north but on the whole it will be warm and dry with temperatures averaging highs of 22 degrees and lows of 14 degrees. Temperatures are to increase slowly as the week pro-gresses up to highs of 24 degrees by Wednesday.

The centreClear skies and high temper-

atures are predicted for Saturday with highs of 30 degrees, while on Sunday slight cloud cover is expected. By Monday the cloud is to clear again and as the week progresses temperatures are to rise slowly to daily highs of 32 degrees and nightly lows of 19 degrees.

The southBlue skies and high temperatures

are expected this weekend with temperatures peaking at 29 degrees with nightly lows of 19 degrees. The fair weather is to continue throughout the week although some cloud cover is predicted on Wednesday, however temperatures will remains steady.

Portugal speeding up vaccinationsAs the Delta variant of Covid-19 continues to spread in Portugal and increasing numbers of young members of the population are becoming infected, vaccinations are ramping up in Portugal.

The vaccination programme against Covid-19 will accelerate in the coming weeks

and should reach the threshold of 130,000 inoculations per day in July.According to the Minister for Health: “Our goal is to ensure that in July we can reach more than 130,000 vaccines administered per day. The ‘task force’ has been working intensely to maximise all opportunities for

vaccination, in terms of availability of vaccines and taking advantage of the schedules and resources allocated to this process”, said Marta Temido.Marta Temido reiterated that the option of vaccination against Covid-19 in pharmacies remains “a possibility”, while explaining the

reasons why self-scheduling was not immediately accessible to people over 35, as initially announced, but only to those who are at least 37-years-old (as of the time of going to press).“It will have been a matter of managing the process itself.

When you open the vaccination for a certain age group, people automatically come and a waiting phenomenon is generated. If we open in two phases over the same week, we can manage the responses better and we are convinced that this will be a better solution for

those who intend to self-schedule”, she stressed. On the other hand, the government official admitted that vaccination without age discrimination has been a subject of “discussions”, given the higher incidence of new cases in recent weeks among young people in the population (20-29 years old) who are not yet included in the process, but reiterated the priority given to protecting the most susceptible age groups.“Right now, our goal continues to be to vaccinate as much as possible, but still focus on the age groups at greatest risk. The ones who are getting most infected are the 20-29 age group, but the ones who are most in need of hospital care are the 40-50 age group. So the logic of protecting those who are most vulnerable, even though others are likely to have a higher number of cases, holds,” she noted. However, Marta Temido made a point of stressing the expectation that the inclusion of the age group of people over 20 years of age would occur “in mid-July” and stressed that the core teams are being strengthened within the scope of the vaccination plan.

Facebook and YouTube record user losses in Portugal

Social networks Facebook and YouTube registered losses of users in Portugal this year, compared to 2020, according to the Reuters Digital News Report 2021 (Reuters DNR 2021), which analyses 46 countries. Although Facebook and YouTube continue to be the social networks most used by Portuguese who use the Internet (73.2 percent and 65.6 per-cent, respectively), Facebook lost around 3.7 percent of users and YouTube 2.4 percentage points on last year.

More millionaires in Portugal According to the latest ‘Global Wealth Report’, Swiss

bank Credit Suisse’s report on the continued growth of global wealth, for 2020, the number of millionaires in Portugal rose last year, despite the pandemic. According to the report, last year there were 136,430 millionaires in Portugal, up on the 117,000 millionaires identified in the country the year before. According to the study, in 2020, the richest 1 percent in Portugal held 20.1 percent of the country’s wealth.

Portuguese concerned about ‘fake news’

About three quarters of Portuguese who use the Internet say they worry about fake news. This is according to the Reuters Digital News Report 2021 (Reuters DNR 2021). The report found “Covid-19-related misinformation tops the list of illegitimate content most respondents encountered in the past week, followed by content related to politics”. It also highlighted that “the Portuguese who least trust in news say they encounter more uninformative content related to immigration”.

Big money in avocado farmsA study carried out by Agro.Ges, a consultancy special-

ising in agricultural matters, concluded that the production of avocado in the Algarve will generate annual revenue of €40 million in the creation of GVA – Gross Added Value. There are currently an estimated 1,833 hectares of avocado growing in the Algarve. Currently the contribution is already €20 million to the region’s annual economy. Addressing water concerns, the study further indicates that water used by avocado farming is, on average, 6,500 m3/ha per year, which is similar to the average for dominant crops, in some cases even less.

Angela Merkel has highlighted the current Covid-19 situation in Portugal to criticise a lack of coordination in the EU regarding travel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticised the lack of common rules within the European Union

(EU) regarding travel, while pointing to the increased levels of Covid-19 in Portugal, which in her view “could have been avoided”.“What I regret is that we have not yet been able to achieve uniform behaviour among member states in terms of travel restrictions, this is a step backwards,” she said before adding: “We now have a situation in Portugal, which perhaps could have been avoided”.“And that’s why we have to work even harder” in the area of coordination, stressed Angela Merkel, referring in particular to the permission given by Portugal, who currently chairs the EU Council, for the entry of tourists – such as the British, into the country. In turn, other countries such as Germany and France have imposed restrictions on travel from the UK due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant (detected in India) of SARS-CoV-2.“We’ve made pretty good progress over the past few months [in terms of the pandemic], but we’re still not where I would like the EU to be,” said Angela Merkel. These statements were made days before European leaders met at a European summit in Brussels and at a time when Portugal registers daily numbers of infections that only compare with February levels.

The spike in Covid-19 cases in Portugal, which currently mainly affects the Lisbon region, has led to the Portuguese government bringing in new measures, which include the prohibition of movement in or out of the Lisbon metropolitan area between 3pm on Fridays and 6am on Mondays. Also present at the same press conference, Ursula von der Leyen admitted that it was “only a matter of time” before the Delta variant became the dominant variant in community space. And she defended that it was “important to continue vaccinating as soon as

possible”, as this is a more contagious mutation of the virus. The official entry into force of the EU covid digital certificate, proof of (negative) testing, recovery or vaccination against the disease, is scheduled for 1 July, which aims to resume free movement during the summer, but foreseeing the reintroduction of restrictions if the epidemiological situation justifies it.The management of health measures applied to trips is made by each country, so that, even with the certificate, countries can request more tests or impose quarantines on travellers.

The Portugal News · 26 Jun 20214 NewsAlgarve incidence rate is “artificially inflated”Loulé and Albufeira are calling for changes in how the number of Covid-19 cases are being counted in relation to the number of people in the municipality.

The Municipality of Loulé wants to count the daily overnight stays in hotels so that guests

are added to the residents and the calculation of the incidence rate for Covid-19 is proportional to the real number of people who are staying.Loulé Council argues that the ratio is being "wrongly calculated", since foreign tourists are not considered in the total population, but if they are infected, they are included in the county's positive cases."This situation will be easily cor-rected if overnight stays in hotels in each municipality are accounted for and this number is added to the population of residents".For the Municipality of Loulé, the fact that the cases of national residents are counted in the mu-

nicipalities where they are detected and not in those of residence “penalises the municipalities with more tourism”, as is the case of Loulé.Meanwhile, the Municipality of Albufeira has also requested a review of the criteria for calculat-ing the incidence rate of Covid-19, claiming that the ratio is being “artificially inflated” due to the presence of tourists in the county. In a statement, the municipality estimates that “about twice the number of residents” should be in the municipality, which is measur-able, “by the 30 percent increase in waste collection compared to May, the huge increase in consumption and the large increase in the number of requests for services”.“The Council of Albufeira demands a review of these criteria and recalls

that this assessment, applied by the Government, will generate a huge slowdown in the regional and local economy and will have serious consequences for the Algarve, in general, and for the municipality of Albufeira, in particular.”Regretting that such an important ratio is “artificially inflated”, the Council of Albufeira claims that the adaptation of criteria to the re-ality of municipalities that make a living from tourist activity is “fair” and “urgent”.“This fact was addressed by me in one of the face-to-face conver-sations I had with the secretary of State for Tourism, as well as with the president of the Algarve Tourism Region and other regional authorities, in order to resolve the situation that is very damaging to our region”, said José Carlos Rolo.

Another blow for Algarve tourism Algarve tourism businesses are being hit hard with new Lisbon weekend restrictions curbing staycations in the region.

Newly imposed travel restrictions for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area are having an adverse effect on Algarve tourism business-es with the president of the Algarve hotel-iers association (AHETA) seeing the new rules as being another nail in the Algarve tourism coffin.

Speaking to Lusa agency, Elidérico Viegas, the president of the Algarve Hotels and Touristic Enterprises Association (AHETA) considers that the restriction of circulation in and out of Lisbon dur-

ing the weekend, “is another blow for the Algarve, a region that had high hopes that the national market will help to minimise losses being experienced in the internation-al markets”.

“The restrictions somehow, whether you like it or not, always end up discouraging people who were thinking of spending the weekend in the Algarve”, said Elidérico Viegas.

The president of the main association of hoteliers and entrepreneurs in the Algarve

believes that, according to the information he has, “many people are still deciding to spend the weekend” in the region.

“We have received many requests for information about whether, with reserva-tions, people can leave the Lisbon region, similarly to what happened in previous situations. Right now, there is uncertainty as to whether people will be able to leave their places of residence”, he said.

Elidérico Viegas said that the increases in the number of Covid-19 infections and

restrictions on the movement of people, "are not good news for the tourism sector and cause concern and consternation for hotel businesses".

“Hotel entrepreneurs, who are already facing the loss of the largest tourism market of the United Kingdom, are now also faced with internal limitations,” he said.

For Elidérico Viegas, the tourism sector “continues to exist in times of uncertainty, a difficult situation that no one connected to the sector wants to have”.

Government wants Portugal to receive more refugeesThe Secretary of State for Integration and Migration, Cláudia Pereira, has said that Portugal must be available to receive even more refugees and that it should do even better than in the past.

At an event organised by the Refugee Support Platform (PAR), Cláudia Pereira wanted to highlight the “challenges” arising from the latest data released by the United Nations High Commissioner

for Refugees (UNHCR), which indicate that in 2020 the number of refugees and internally displaced persons hit a new record and now stands at 82.4 million people.“We are on a continent that receives 15 percent of refugees

and therefore we have to be available to receive even more and better,” she stressed. The event, called “Together We Welcome”, took place at the Faculty of Humanities of the Catholic University of Portugal and marked World Refugee Day, which was celebrated on 20 June. The Secretary of State drew attention to UNHCR data that indicates that 42 percent of all displaced persons in the world

are under the age of 18, as well as estimates that nearly one million children were born as refugees between 2018 and 2020.“It is up to the government to create structures that make the reception and integration process more fluid,” argued Cláudia Pereira, adding that municipalities, universities and other civil society have their role to play in the reception and integration of refugees, as well as in meeting “more ambitious targets”.

Calls to name sex offendersChega wants the identity of convicted sex offenders to be made public as a form of deterrent.

The Chega party has presented a draft resolution recommending

that the Government creates an electronic platform where the data of convicted sex offenders in

Portugal can be found and to make this information available to the public, aiming at the “effective

prevention” of this problem. The diploma (which does not have the force of law), was delivered to Parliament by the party and recommends that the Government create “a platform for registering the identification of all sex offenders definitively convicted in Portugal and make this data public and universally accessible”.Chega also proposes that “a period of 25 years be established for the public registration of all offenders, regardless of the sentence imposed, from the time of the conviction”.In the draft resolution, Chega’s single MP argues that “it is essential that the Government develops and implements an electronic

platform where the data of all convicted sex offenders in Portugal is recorded, whether the victims are minors or adults, for the purpose of effective, social and massive prevention of a problem that seriously erodes the surrounding social fabric”.André Ventura states that “since 2015, the identity of sex offenders is registered - and only available to police officers, magistrates and a number of official entities - in the Criminal Identification Register of Convicted Offenders of Sexual Crimes against Sexual Self-Determination and Sexual Freedom of Minors, which configures a useful instrument for the competent authorities of

investigation and research in matters of sexual crimes against minors”.The report, which was adopted by a majority of MEPs in the EPP-ED group in Strasbourg, stresses the need for a clearer definition of the concept of “sexual crimes against minors”.In the opinion of the MP and leader of Chega, “Portugal has been very ineffective in the fight against sexual crimes, as a result not only of specific cultural phenomena, but also of the legal-penal system itself, which is extremely ineffective in its current configuration in the fight against sexual crimes”.

7The Portugal News · 26 Jun 2021NewsLisbon weekend lockdown set to continue

Kidnap and forced marriage suspects detained Five people suspected of having kidnapped a 13-year-old child in Leiria to force her into a marriage with a minor of the same age have been detained by the PJ.

In a statement, the PJ police said they launched an operation at dawn on 22 June aimed at locating and detaining five suspects for the crimes of abduction, attempted mur-der, attempted sexual abuse of children and damage with firearms, in the cities of Leiria and Marinha Grande.

A sixth person was located and identified as being involved in the consummation of

these crimes, the statement reads.According to the PJ, the facts occurred on

a weekend this month, “as a reaction to the fact that relatives of a 13-year-old girl did not accept her marriage to a boy of the same age.”

“To that end, they reacted with gunfire against the child’s father, causing damage with a firearm to various assets, including a house and a vehicle”, reads the statement.

According to the PJ, the suspects, “using great violence”, kidnapped the minor, “in order to force her to marry the boy and maintain a sexual relationship, ending up with the victim being released the next day by the presumed kidnappers”.

The detainees, three men and two women, aged between 26 and 51, have no known work occupation. All have police records and

some criminal records related to the areas of robbery and drug trafficking, the PJ source told Lusa agency.

The operation was initiated by the Crim-inal Investigation Department of Leiria and the Directorate of the Judiciary Police Centre in compliance with orders issued by the Investigation and Criminal Action Department of Leiria.

The Minister of Health has said that the epidemiological situation of Covid-19 in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo regions should result in the continued application of restrictive measures in the capital.

“The numbers at this time suggest that the situation in Lisbon is not yet over”, which means that “the

specific measures in place have to be maintained, as they were maintained in other parts of the country when they were at special risk” said Marta Temido at the time of going to press.“We have to be aware that we are dealing with a phenomenon whose evolution is still fraught with uncertainties. It is not possible to guarantee that the future will be this way or that, the only thing can guarantee is that we will do everything so that this is not necessary, but we know our reality. The numbers continue to increase, we are not yet at a time when we are seeing them decrease and, therefore, we must be attentive”, said the minister.Stressing the importance of

vaccination, testing and “some non-pharmacological measures”, the government official also reacted to the criticism of German Chancellor Angela Merkel regarding the opening of Portugal to host the final of the Football Champions League and, consequently, thousands of English supporters.“Controlling the movement of populations is one of the challenges we face. We are in a phase of combating the pandemic in which there is an increasing desire to resume normal life and this is a difficulty. If we knew everything we know today, could we have acted in certain moments differently? Probably yes, but you can’t rewrite history,” she said.Marta Temido also repeated the idea that the country seeks to “buy some time through non-pharmacological measures”, such

as the use of masks and distancing, in order to be able to vaccinate more people and appealed to the population to carry out tests regularly, although without

defining a fixed periodicity.“What we are asking is that people take advantage of free testing in many areas or from the possibility of prescriptions that exists through

health services. People who are not yet vaccinated can undergo a test before subjecting others to exposure that may be risky”, she concluded.

The Portugal News · 26 Jun 20218 Front Page StoryGovernment delays blamed for millions of drinks cartons not being recycledEnvironmental organisations have stated that the government is responsible for four million drinks containers being thrown away every day without being recycled in Portugal.

The claims are being made in relation to the delay in bringing in a deposit system, however the

Environment minister, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, has said that the system will be in place by the end of the year.“The situation harms both the country and the circular economy”, said the Sciaena association, focused on promoting the improvement of the marine environment, Zero and

ANP/WWF (Associação Natureza Portugal, which represents the international World Wide Fund for Nature in Portugal) in a statement. The deposit system with return (SDR) for disposable packaging of plastic, glass, aluminium and ferrous metals was approved by the Portuguese Parliament in 2018 and should be operational at the beginning of 2022 but the organisations estimate that it will not be operational before January 2023.

The organisations recall the approval of the law at the end of 2018, by a large majority, and explain in a statement, why they are concerned, stating that the law has not yet been regulated nor are there “any signs” that it will be and European legislation requires a period of at least one year, after regulation, for it to come into force.“As the implementation of the SDR is already expected to be delayed by a year at this point, this will mean the waste of around 1.5 billion packages! The Minister (of the Environment) Matos Fernandes must act quickly to ensure that there will be no further delays”, stress the organisations. They explain that if four million containers are thrown away every day, that means that in a year 1.473,609,427 drinks containers (the equivalent of 250 Towers of Belém, (according to environmentalists) “will go into landfill, be incinerated or spread in the environment”.“The SDR is a fundamental tool for

the fulfilment of several EU targets (recycling and reuse)” and “the Portuguese have already shown, in several representative studies, their broad support for this idea, and look forward to its implementation”, stress the organisations. In response to the claims, the Environment minister has said that he hopes to regulate the packaging collection system by the end of the year, but will wait until after the local elections have been conducted before implementing any system. In his response, João Pedro Matos Fernandes began by saying that there are environmentalists who “take the existence of a Ministry of the Environment badly”.“By the end of this year, we will have structured a system for the storage of bottles. We launched a pilot project that went very well and we now have to comply with the law. The law will be enforced, although I cannot swear that on December 31 the system will be enforced and will be working,” he said.

He added that the Government currently has doubts regarding the systems for depositing packaging, especially bottles.“We obviously have to separate them and reuse them as much as possible, but the recycling systems are based on the collection that is produced by the municipalities and by aggregated municipal systems. And there is a question here that I don’t know how to answer, the question of should we have a completely isolated license, like Sociedade Ponto Verde, to take care of this process, or should we use the systems that already exist?”, he asked. The Environment Minister later defended preferentially the idea of creating “an autonomous system”, but warned that he did not intend to “take away revenue from anyone”.“This is a discussion that must involve the local authorities and at this moment, before the elections, is not the best moment to do it. Right after the local elections we will certainly close the issue”, he concluded.

Calls to ban chained animalsThe PAN party wants to ban pet owners from permanently chaining their pets or placing them on balconies or terraces for long periods of time.

With this bill, the PAN party wants to establish

that "animals cannot be housed on balconies, terraces and similar spaces, without prejudice to their

occasional presence in these places for a time not exceeding three hours a day".

The PAN partyalso wants that "no pet may be permanently chained or tethered" and, "in the case the use of chaining proves to be essential for the safety of people, the animal itself or other animals, and there is no alternative, it must always be limited to the shortest period of time possible, without exceeding three hours a day, and always safeguarding the animal's needs for exercise, shelter, food, water, hygiene and leisure".The party predicts that the violation of this norm "constitutes animal maltreatment, an offense foreseen and punished by the Criminal Code" and proposes that it enter into force within one year after the publication of the law.

The law also establishes that "pets cannot be left alone, without a human or other animal, for more than 12 hours".This plan "will include the implementation of adequate solutions to their housing conditions, as well as financial support for this purpose in situations of social and economic needs" and also foresees the initiative, pointing out that this support "may be channelled from the budget allocated to municipalities in the field of animal health and protection and the detention and control of the population of pets".The project also provides that all municipalities must make public annual management reports "with the numbers of

unchaining of pets carried out, with an indication of the species of animal, situation in which it was found, adopted solution and respective amount spent" to allow for "a report on the situation at a national level".The PAN party deputies argue that, "if animals remain chained to a confined area for hours, days, months or even years", animals "may suffer serious emotional and physical damage due to the accumulated effects of isolation, frustration and boredom" and they can also become aggressive, and indicate that permanent chaining is already prohibited in parts of Spain, France, Germany and some US states.

The Portugal News · 26 Jun 202112 NewsTransforming old buildings for tourism The government will be redeveloping a further 16 state

properties for tourism purposes through the Revive programme.

In all, 16 properties are approved for the public administration programme Revive, including two

military properties in Setúbal - Bateria do Outão and land attached to the Tower of Outão - and 14 without military affectation, including a property of the private domain of the Portuguese Tourism

Institute that renews its permanence in the Revive programme. The list, attached to the order, includes the Palacete Viscondessa de Santiago do Lobão (Porto), Quartel das Esquadras (Almeida), Hotel Turismo da Guarda (Guarda), Almada Castle (Almada), Torre Velha or Fortress of S. Sebastião Caparica (Almada), Forte de

S. João da Cadaveira (Cascais), Quinta do Cabo das Lezírias (Vila Franca de Xira) and a building on the Pombaline Prata Street (Lisbon). And also the Manteigueiro Palace on Rua da Horta Seca (Lisbon), Outão Hospital (Setúbal), Vila Fernando Education Centre (Elvas), Juromenha Fortress (Alandroal),

S. José Monastery (Évora) and the former Ribeira Grande Hospital (S. Miguel/Azores).The Revive programme was created in 2016, with 33 properties, to promote the recovery and requalification of classified public properties which are not in use, granting private individuals permission to operate them for tourism purposes."The success of the Revive Programme is undeniable, with the operation of several properties already granted and in some of these buildings, the respective recovery process has ended and the exploitation, with benefit to the public interest, has already begun, so it is understood that private investment, the recovery of buildings of historical and cultural significance, the creation of jobs and economic activity with positive social impact, should naturally continue, maintaining the model initially recommended," writes the executive in the order. For this reason, properties are allocated to the programme that by virtue of their historical,

architectural, cultural or with the possibility of economic use, in conjunction with the lack of allocation of a use of public interest that allows its maintenance or to reduce its deterioration, are "framed in the mission and objectives" of the genesis of Revive. The executive adds that other properties owned by the State, but without military purposes, as well as properties owned by other entities, can also be integrated. In any case, it points out, it is important to "establish, together, relevant aspects of pre-contractual procedures, particularly with regard to the respective assumptions, object, configuration, and responsibility for processing, highlighting, in this context, the importance of defining the 'terms of reference' of future interventions by the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage, as well as the responsibility that has been assigned to the Instituto do Turismo de Portugal for the respective tender processing, considering its particular vocation for this purpose.

The Algarveans are back!

N Chrissie Spencer

Where there’s a will, there is a way. I am sure we all feel that we have the inner strength to get going after a huge setback. Losing someone special, a friend, partner, husband or wife, a close relative, is for instance a monumental life changer.

Where and how we move onwards, is difficult and differ-ent for us all. That long tunnel, a vortex that changes shape, sometimes it seems as if we are really struggling against the tide, shifting walls. For a lot of us, it is that sense of being alone. Or, loneliness as a feeling can be frightening. There are of course many groups, or social clubs, that we can join. But hang on! I am on my own, no longer a “we”. We used to be an “us”, now I am just an ‘I’, a ‘me’.

Dingbats21 came in the early hours of one morning, not so long ago, reflecting on just these words, loneliness, alone. How can I change this? How do I move forward? Arriving, for in-stance, on your own at your old favourite restaurant, daunting. Everyone looking for the other one, the other part of the “us”. Why dingbats? It is a strange word used by the Australians for all sorts of crazy, silly, things. Agitated or annoyed. Silly to think of going out for a coffee? Crazy to think that you can go and meet people for a lunch. On your own? Agitated and annoyed

at the futility of life?Dingbats21 is the way for-

ward, a physical support plat-form, for people of like minds, in the same situation to join in, learn to laugh again, enjoy, being a part of something. Your new beginning, your new chapter. If we find the sea is suddenly becalmed, feeling lost, treading water, then a life-buoy or a life-belt will be at hand. Some-one like you, someone who has been there, knows how you feel to help you along your way. For any dingbats21 enquiries please e-mail [email protected].

Live theatre is back with The Algarveans. Come and be a part of it.

Auditions for the next production will be taking place on 1 July at 7pm at “The Little Theatre” at the União Juven-tude Sesmarias, R. do Cabeço de Pias, Carvoeiro.

Our return production will be Duets by Peter Quilter, directed by Jim Landis, to be performed at a new venue, União Juventude Sesmarias, - now to be known by us as: “The Little Theatre”, on 23 and 24 October.

Duets is a light-hearted comedy consisting of four sep-arate one-act plays, each with a cast of one male and one female, examining the chaotic world of love, relationships and the madness of the human heart.

We are looking for 4 men and 4 women. All ages are welcome. Auditions will take the form of readings from the play.

This is a great opportunity to get back on stage, or to try it for the first time. Each act is relatively short (15-20 pag-es), so learning lines will be less overwhelming than usual.

The nature of this type of play also means that the rehearsal schedule will be less intense. We expect to start rehearsing in late August on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. If cast you will be needed at fewer rehearsals than for a normal production.

We are also desperately seeking an enthusiastic stage manager. As this is a small stage and a small production, this would not be a huge task but a stage manager is essen-tial to the smooth running of any show. We also need a sound person (to record all the sound effects and music).

If you feel you could help with either of the above, please let us know.

If you are not able to make the audition but would like to be involved either on or off stage, please contact Jim Landis on +351 911 865 878 or email: [email protected]

Pub.Lisbon Property brought to you by

The time to buy is nowBrexit, Covid-19 and changes to the rules regarding the Golden Visa in Portugal are altering the real estate landscape in Portugal, making now the time to buy.

The Golden Visa programme as we know it is coming to an end next year and while Non Habitual Residency continues

to be an attractive tax regime, this really is the idea time to make the most of these very favourable incentives for investors in Portugal.

Golden VisasThe Golden Visa in Portugal is a government programme that grants citizenship in Portugal in exchange for

investment in specific areas, including property. This is an amazing opportunity for non-EU citizens and their dependants to acquire citizenship, which in most cases would be extremely difficult or impossible for many people otherwise. There are several different options to acquire a Golden Visa, with the property route being the most popular by far, and that’s where Tamea International’s expertise can help. Some of these options include:• Purchasing a property in Portugal to the value of €500,000 or greater.

• Buying a property in Portugal to the value of €350,000 or higher that is located in an urban rehabilitation zone, with construction dating back more than 30 years for renovation. On 1 January, 2022 the Golden Visa rules are going to change but there is no need to worry because the Tamea International team are here to guide potential investors through new regulations. Simply contact the team to find out what requirements you will need to meet to still be able to take advantage of the Golden Visa. Tamea International are also able to source exclusive properties from across the market that tick all of the necessary boxes to allow potential buyers to benefit from the unique opportunity the Golden Visa offers.

NHRThe Non-Habitual Resident tax regime is another alternative for investors, basically allowing foreign income, dividends and capital gains to be exempt from Portuguese taxation for ten consecutive years, while there is also an exemption on foreign employment income if it is effectively taxed at source. While this tax benefit is clearly very attractive, especially to high net worth individuals, it is not just tax benefits that make Portugal the country of choice for many investors.

Quality of lifeAlongside the stunning beaches, golf courses and undeniable fantastic weather, Portugal offers a high quality of life thanks to the cost of living in the country and exciting opportunities, such as job creation and new industries.Portugal is both trendy and affordable, meanwhile there has also been a technological renaissance in the country with Lisbon and Porto having been recognised internationally as flourishing start up hubs, popular with tech businesses and digital nomads alike, while the Web Summit Conference has been hosted by Lisbon since 2016.The burgeoning tech scene has helped to encourage the opening of co-work spaces, new restaurants and cafes, galleries, cultural spaces and has allowed the country and Lisbon in particular to become a truly multicultural and exciting city to invest in. Let Tamea International help you to find the ideal property for you to take advantage of all that Portugal has to offer.

easyJet move UK planes to Germany

Air France upping flights to Portugal

The number of workers on traditional ‘lay-offs’, i.e. those provided for in the Labour Code, fell by half in May compared to April, to a total of 7,927, according to social security statistics.

The 7,927 regular lay-offs recorded in May compare to 15,529 in April, of which 4,906 were reductions in working hours and

3,021 suspension of work contracts.According to the Synthesis of statistical information of Social Security prepared by the Office of Strategy and Planning (GEP) of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, the 3,021 benefits that in May resulted from temporary suspension of the work contract correspond to 1,904 less than those observed in the previous month. The 4,906 lay-off situations foreseen in the Labour Code associated to the reduction of working hours correspond to 5,689 fewer

beneficiaries than the total registered in April. These benefits were processed for 309 employers (24 less than in the previous month), notes the same information from the GEP.In May 2020 there were 2,547 workers in ‘lay-off ’ (1,841 of which with temporary suspension) and 184 employers in this situation. Recall, however, that at that time was still in full force the ‘lay-off ’ simplified ‘lay-off ’ , a measure created by the Government to mitigate the impact of the pandemic in the decline of business activity. The data released on 21 June revealed, on the other hand, that in May 2021 Social

Security processed the payment of 2,054,699 old age pensions, 2,145 less than in the same month of 2020 and 16 less than in April. The number of old-age pensions processed in May corresponds, moreover, to the fifth consecutive month of decline in these pensions, with the largest monthly drop occurring between January and February.Old age pensions represent around 70 percent of those processed by Social Security, with survivor’s pensions (which in May totalled 721,513) representing 24 percent and disability pensions (a total of 178,944) 6 percent.According to the Synthesis of Statistical Information of Social Security published recently, in April, the number of individuals

with contributions declared to Social Security was 357,325 independent workers, 25,428 less than the previous month, while dependent workers with declared remuneration rose to 3,608,148, reflecting an increase of 13,243 when compared with the previous month. In a year-on-year comparison, a drop of 7.4 percent or less 28,421 contributions declared by the self-employed and 67,688 more salaries declared by dependent workers (1.9 percent) should be noted. The average monthly value of salaries declared by employers regarding dependent workers was 1,164.17 Euros, in April 2021, registering a year-on-year growth of 4.7 percent, the GEP also indicates.

Air France has announced that they plan to increase capacity to Portugal by 25 percent when compared to figures from 2019.

A statement from the Airline confirms that this summer, Air France plans to serve close to 200 destinations worldwide, includ-ing more than 110 destinations in France, Europe and North Africa.

In Europe, this offer mainly concerns leisure destinations, such as Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy, on departure from Paris and the French regions. Overall and compared with summer 2019, Air France will increase its capacity to Greece by almost 80 percent, and its capacity to Portugal by nearly 25 percent.

In July and August 2021, the Air France flight schedule will represent 65 percent of the capacity offered during the same period

in 2019, compared to 40 percent in May.To support the increase in frequencies, the Air

France maintenance teams are working hard to bring 10 medium-haul and 12 long-haul aircraft out of storage. In total, 181 Air France aircraft will be in operation this summer.

Low-cost airline easyJet, have announced that they are moving some of their fleet out of the UK and to Berlin instead to meet the increasing demand of intra-Europe flights.

Following the removal of Portugal from the UK green list, there are now virtual-ly no viable destinations that UK travellers can visit without mandatory quaran-tine upon arrival back in the country. This has meant that demand for flights in the UK has dropped signifi-cantly, while more relaxed rules in Europe have allowed travel to continue on the continent.

In a statement easyJet said: “With 50 percent of easyJet’s flying intra-Europe,

we are seeing European governments are progres-sively opening up using frameworks in place which enable travel and much of it restriction-free.

“And this relaxation and removal of restrictions has sparked a positive booking momentum across Europe with the majority of our bookings showing a strong swing towards Europe when in normal times it would be a 50/50 split with the UK.

“We are fortunate that we are able to redirect flying on

our European network, for example we have moved ca-pacity from the UK to Pal-ma to Berlin-Palma flying, and over the past week we have added 150,000 further seats to our intra-European network.

“Europe is demonstrat-ing that a safe reopening of travel is possible and so we continue to urge the UK Government to do so urgently so our customers can reunite with loved ones or travel for a much-needed break.”

National airports received 739,000 passengers in April, 86 percent less than the same month in 2019, but higher than in April 2020.

Air transport stats for April, released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), record the movement of 739,400 passengers (boarding, disembarking and direct tran-sit) and 14,000 tonnes of cargo and mail, decreasing 86 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively, compared to the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.

France was the main country of origin and destination of flights, followed by Switzer-land and Germany, according to the data.

Also in April, 6,500 commercial aircraft landed at national airports, a decrease of 66.9 percent compared to April 2019.

“Air transport continues to register traffic still very far from pre-pandemic values”, concludes the institute, specifying that 62.3 percent of passengers landing at national airports in April corresponded to interna-tional traffic.

Between January and April 2021, there was a 5.6 percent decrease in cargo and mail handled at national airports (-13.5 percent in 2020), with the movement of goods at Lisbon airport representing 66.1 percent of the total, reaching 34,700 tonnes (-11.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year).

A possible increase in sardine fishing quotas, from 10,000 to 30,000 tonnes, has been largely welcomed by Algarve fishermen, who have pointed to a full recovery of the species.

“This is extremely positive for the sector and for the entire value chain involved in sardine fishing,” said the

president of Olhãopesca - Algarve Fisheries Producers Organisation.

Miguel Cardoso told Lusa

that the announcement from the government means that the possibility of fishing for sardines “will increase” and

confirms what the sector has been saying for some time, that the sardine population has been “in full recovery, as a result of the sacrifices and contingencies implemented”.

For the official, this is an increase that the fishermen have been waiting for “for a long time”, making it possible to alleviate “some restrictions” and be able to fish for sardines for “some more time” throughout the year.

The Minister of the Sea revealed last week that the capture of sardines in Por-tugal could increase to up to 30,000 tonnes this year, following scientific advice

from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.

Ricardo Serrão Santos indicated that the scientific assessment revealed a recov-ery of biomass, but stressed that it is important to main-tain the sustainability of the resource, praising the contri-bution of the fishing sector for the positive results.

The president of the Pesca do Barlavento Shipowners Cooperative – Barlapescas – also told Lusa that he was pleased with the news.

Mário Galhardo’s concern is focused on the current pandemic situation and the relationship between “the

quantity caught and con-sumption”, as he is worried that there may be “an excess of fish and a possible drop in its value”.

Being a very important species for Algarve fisher-men, he stressed that in the region “there are no” canning factories, which can create problems if there is an excess of catch and asked the can-ning sector to “sit down at the table” with the fishermen to find a solution.

He did however add that the producer associ-ations regularly monitors catches and may limit daily amounts if the sale price drops excessively.

19The Portugal News · 26 Jun 2021BusinessBritish Nationals in Portugal - residency factsAt Sovereign we are seeing an increase in enquiries relating to residency in Portugal both from those wishing to move here and from those who find they are wrongly registered as tax resident here and have suddenly received a tax demand from the Portuguese authorities.Residency applicationsFact: British passport holders who are not resident in Portugal can now only spend 90 days in any 180 day period in the Schengen area and that includes Portugal. To stay longer implies a different approach to one’s tax situation and therefore should be assessed with careful consideration.Sovereign’s previous articles in the Portugal News explained how British Nationals must now apply for Portuguese residency via a D7 Passive Income visa or a Golden Visa by investment. Sovereign Group has a concierge residency application service.

Fact: British Nationals can no longer get the town hall CRUE five-year certificate and must now apply for residency via one of the visa routes.

Fact: Many British nationals rushed to get their town hall CRUE residency five-year certificates before 31st December 2020 before Brexit in order to be able to stay in Portugal for longer. This certificate is for permanent residency, not, as many believe for being allowed to stay in Portugal temporarily. In requesting this certificate you are informing the authorities that you are a permanent resident of Portugal. The certificate must be registered at the tax department within 60 days of issue to inform the tax department that the individual is now a resident, thus changing their status from non-resident to tax resident. Sovereign can update the tax department with your new status.

Fact: Portugal’s Non-Habitual Residency Scheme has attracted many individuals to take up residency in Portugal to take advantage of the 10 year favourable tax regime. Under this scheme pensions are taxed at 10% whilst many other sources of income can be exempt from taxation in Portugal.Sovereign provides the service to register your NHR status. You cannot have been deemed a resident in the previous five years prior to the NHR application. If you have been wrongly registered as resident (see below) Sovereign can submit an appeal to the tax office to register you as non-resident, backdate the necessary five years, to enable you to apply for NHR status and be eligible for its benefits. However, you must be able to prove you were paying tax in another country and were tax resident there and have not actually have been living in Portugal.

Fact: As a resident of Portugal, you must declare your Worldwide income via a yearly tax return in Portugal. This is not optional. Many British expats believe that they are tax compliant because they are paying their taxes in the UK. One cannot just opt to declare their pensions in the UK. They must be declared and tax assessed for payment in Portugal.Sovereign can prepare and submit your tax returns and trigger the Double tax treaty with the UK to enable you to receive your pensions gross in the UK so that you can pay the tax in Portugal.

You might be wrongly registered as a tax resident!Fact: If your IMI property tax bill is sent by the tax department to your Portugal property you are registered as a tax resident of Portugal. By registering your Portuguese residential address at the tax office, you are registering as a tax resident.Prior to 2003 upon applying for a fiscal number individuals were automatically registered as tax resident in Portugal. This was because fiscal representation, which non-residents of the EU must have, did not exist in those days. In these times everyone was logged as resident and many people continue with this status without realizing the long-term implications. You should not remain wrongly registered as a resident as this can lead to notifications from the tax department for you to submit tax returns here and to declare your Worldwide income in Portugal. Sovereign can register as your fiscal representative to alter your status to non-resident.

Fact: The Portuguese tax department is sending out demands to people who are registered as tax resident who have not submitted a tax return in Portugal during the last four years. Sovereign has seen many individuals this year receive a demand from the Portuguese tax office for the submission of tax returns from 2017 – 2020. The tax department is either sending out this information because as a tax resident you have not submitted any tax returns here or because they have been informed of your income outside of Portugal and it must be declared here. They are giving you the opportunity to submit the returns before they are automatically processed. If completed automatically by the tax department, the fine for late submission is much higher than that issued for a voluntarily submitted return. If you do not have NHR status you will be

taxed at progressive rates of between 14.5% - 48% on your worldwide income even if you have already paid tax abroad.Sovereign can prepare and submit an appeal against the submission if you are incorrectly registered or prepare and submit the return on your behalf if you are truly resident here. Sovereign has seen many cases where individuals have, out of the blue, received tax bills from the Portuguese tax department demanding backdated tax be paid on their foreign income, including capital gains tax, tax on pensions, pension drawdowns, sale or increases in investments & dividends. To summarise, it is important to ensure you are correctly registered in Portugal. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and it is easy to fall foul of the tax department.• If you have a CRUE certificate you must also be tax resident.• If you are tax resident, you must declare your worldwide income here.• If you are wrongly registered as tax resident get this changed to non-resident. • Do not ignore tax department

notifications. Most give you just 15 days to respond. The Sovereign Group first established an office in the Algarve in 1999 specifically to meet the growing demand for fiscal assistance from foreign investors, residents and retirees. As well as assisting and guiding clients through the complex application processes for Portugal’s popular non-habitual resident (NHR), ‘Golden Visa’ and D7 Visa schemes. The Portugal News · 26 Jun 202120 OpinionJab and Go There is an old saying, ‘I used to be indecisive,

but now I am not sure’.

This would seem very appropriate for the UK government who struggle to decide on

a definite way forward regarding travel in and out of the UK.In the last few weeks, we have seen Portugal given the green light, then changed to amber, other Covid-19 safe countries kept on the amber list when in all honesty, they should not be there. There is disbelief about the continued absence of Malta and some Mediterranean islands, from the green list, despite their successful vaccination programmes and low case rates. Nobody can sensibly criticise the Boris led government (except Dominic Cummings) for their roll out of vaccines in the UK, it was world beating, much to the disgust of the EU. However, firm decisions do need to be made.

Of course, if it’s anything to do with football, then all the rules go out of the window. In these cases, Boris Johnson says “sensible accommodations” can be made. There is nothing sensible about it, one rule for everyone, if only Boris can decide what the one rule is. A few days ago, the UK media were full of reports that the UK would admit visitors from the USA as long as they had both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. Then it changed to just testing negative. Then it was ‘leaked’, double-jabbed tourists could be allowed to travel to amber list countries without quarantining under new government plans. According to The Telegraph, always very well informed of what the tory party are doing (in secret of course, ‘informed sources’), “The change would effectively turn amber countries

green for the vaccinated, opening up the possibility of quarantine-free travel to most major holiday destinations in Europe and the US”. The UK ‘is working’ on a vaccine passport. The Portuguese Government are working faster in preparation for what most of the EU have decided is the way forward, prove you have had both of your vaccinations and you can travel. By last Friday you could already download a digital certificate from the SNS24 portal proving you have had both doses of the vaccine. The so-called vaccine passport. Evidence for travellers who have received both vaccination doses to avoid isolation was “still developing”, but heading in the right direction, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland told the BBC last week.Jesse Norman, the Financial

Secretary to the Treasury, confirmed last week that the Government was looking at opening up summer holidays abroad to fully vaccinated Britons. He also confirmed concerns that EU nations are stealing a march on the UK, he said: “We don’t want to be left behind by other countries that are taking a two-jab approach if it can be done safely.”According to The Times on Monday, fewer than one in 200 travellers arriving from countries on the government’s amber list are testing positive for Covid-19. Matt Hancock confirmed that none of the few who tested positive brought back any variants. We are told that on 24 June the government will review the countries on the green, amber and red lights. At the same time Boris said on Monday, that this year will be “a difficult year for travel”.Confused? You will be.

“Public health paranoia will have trumped common sense”Henry Smith, the Tory chairman of the all-party Future of Aviation group, told the press, “Britain would be an “outlier” (a person or thing differing from all other members of a particular group or set) if it did not adopt the same approach to vaccinated travellers as most other countries. At least 33 countries, including Germany, France, Spain and Greece, exempt vaccinated passengers from quarantine”.“If we don’t do it, we will be at a significant disadvantage to our international competitors. Public health paranoia will have trumped common sense if we don’t go down that route,” Mr Smith said. Meanwhile British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Ryanair have joined the court action over the traffic lights system. Launched by Stansted Airport, Manchester airport and East Midlands, they have called for a judicial review over the system’s “lack of

transparency”. Court papers officially filed on 17 June, argue the government’s reasons for their decisions on who gets the status of green, amber or red are “undisclosed and the decision-making process lacks transparency in a fundamental way”. They are asking a judge to rule on whether the UK government’s decision to amend the traffic light list was against the law. The court papers name the transport secretary, Grant Shapps, and the health secretary, Matt Hancock, as defendants. The aim is to increase pressure on reopening many more countries to international travel over the next few weeks. There are many figures regarding the value to the UK of the airline industry, but most research suggest that it is worth over 50 billion to the UK government and employs over 500,000 people. The airline and travel industry have a powerful voice and can only be ignored for a short time. In the meantime, the Portuguese tourist authorities are doing everything possible to make visitors from other countries welcome, very sensible. But never underestimate the UK tourists, they have a love of Portugal that has endured for over 50 years. While other markets come and go, the British just keep coming back year after year. Why? At the end of the 80’s we commissioned two surveys by the world-famous Gallup Poll organisation, which were held at our Algarve in London Exhibition on Park Lane. One of the many questions asked was what was the attraction of Portugal? No, it wasn’t sun, the beaches or golf, number one, both years, was always ‘The Portuguese people’. UK visitors love the warm genuine welcome they get in Portugal, everything else is a bonus. It’s a friendship that’s not going to stop soon. Not even Boris can stop it!

Protecting your financial legacy Passing your wealth on to family and loved ones

efficiently through international pensions.

Holding foreign assets in one’s own name can be complex, especially upon death. It is generally not tax efficient,

requires foreign probate and can take considerable time – not to mention cost. Since the introduction of Non-Habitual Residency (NHR) many expats in Portugal have looked at International Pension Plans (IPP) which are not subject to probate or succession and avoid unnecessary executor fees or the need for a foreign will. These plans allow members to choose who their beneficiaries should be in the event of their death, which could be their spouse, dependents, or other individuals. Furthermore, IPP’s facilitate the concept of ‘ruling from the grave’ as they allow members to request that the trustees pay income to their spouse via another pension, or to minors via a trust. The death of a loved one brings about immense stress and suffering to any family, even more so if the deceased is the main bread winner. Concerns over international wills, appointing executors and dealing with estates are a minefield of bureaucracy and frustration – the family should not have to bear the additional burden of financial stress at a time of mourning. Members of international pensions can be assured that on the event of their death, beneficiaries will have rapid access to funds, ensuring that they are able to continue with as little disruption as possible in their time of bereavement.International pensions avoid the need for foreign wills and adherence to foreign succession rules. Trustees do not have to rely on wills in order for estates to be wound up before they are able to pay benefits to beneficiaries, thus saving a great deal of time – the time and costs associated with foreign probate are mitigated when dealing with international pensions. As with probate and succession, each country has its own laws regarding the taxation of assets held by individuals, depending on where they are resident at time of death, and tax on assets can vary greatly depending on the countries involved. International pensions can be of use in minimising charges levied on your estate. They provide flexibility in that members can guide the trustees in terms of how they should pay the

benefits to the beneficiaries, who are nominated during the pension application process. The use of ‘letters of wishes’ allows members to instruct trustees in terms of any specific provisions that they wish them to follow when paying benefits to their appointed beneficiaries. This is helpful when transferring benefits for the spouse to another international pension plan where there is a need to protect the benefits from events such as repatriating assets to undesirable jurisdictions. It can also be beneficial for protecting the rights of younger children by having their benefits placed in trusts. The ability to pass benefits on to individuals with no requirements for dependency is useful for those members who may not be married and wish to pass benefits on to their life partner, or even to provide financial support to someone who has played an important role in their life. The ability to nominate a trust allows members to create an efficient means of transferring benefits to children in the event of their spouse predeceasing them or in the event of simultaneous death.Insofar as succession is concerned international pensions mitigate foreign probate, laws of succession, forced heirship and remove the need for foreign wills. The wishes of the members are conveyed to the trustees who are able to transfer wealth efficiently, in the manner desired by the member, expediently and seamlessly. In most cases on the death of a member, trustees usually require a copy of the death certificate and for the beneficiaries to verify their identity – this can result in the distribution of assets taking a few weeks rather than months, or even years in extreme cases for an estate to be wound up.In our experience, members of international pension schemes have worked hard to diversify their wealth for retirement outside of their country of tax residence. The schemes afford members the surety and peace of mind that, irrespective of events, their wealth will be protected and passed on to nominated beneficiaries in-line with their wishes. If you would like advice on how you might benefit from an international pension, please get in contact for an independent appraisal of your financial situation.

22 The Portugal News · 26 Jun 2021 ExperienceDon’t be green about choosing your next golf destination Need a place to golf, spa, swim, eat, relax, and repeat? Boavista Golf & Spa is one of the top tourist villages in the western Algarve.

N Sarah Polonsky

Portugal is a place made for golf-lovers. There are so many courses, specifically in the Algarve, narrowing

it down can be more difficult than lowering your handicap. Look no further. We found the all-in-one putting mecca, whether you just want to play a few rounds or you have the whole family in tow.Opened in January 2002 – after staying here for a four-day getaway from Lisbon – it’s no wonder to me how Boavista quickly became established as one of the Western Algarve’s premier resorts. With an exceptional 18-hole championship course it is one of the Algarve’s most beautifully manicured

courses, bordered by properties all designed to harmonise with the land’s natural contours.  The main event here is the golf. Boavista course, designed by Howard Swan, featuring two distinctive subdivisions on the front and back 9 holes. Consummately with varied holes. It begins with a winding slope in hole 1, par-4, surrounded by sub-tropical vegetation and beautifu, harmonious properties. The first nine climb to the highest point of the resort, where the 9th Tee is a mandatory stop for those who want to enjoy the stunning panoramic views. The following nine holes descend steadily

surrounded by picturesque water features such as streams and lakes juxtaposed with manicured gardens and footbridges, all leading with a finish at the tranquil clubhouse. Friendly service is waiting to help with anything from golf tips to a frosty cerveja. Hugo Pinheiro is the Director of Golf at the resort. He has a wealth of experience acquired from time spent at other well-known golf hotspots throughout Portugal. My husband – golf fanatic and the guinea pig for this article – well, it was his birthday too, was taken out by Hugo for a round. He shared a great insight to the course as a whole, as well as

hole-by-hole tips and was beyond accommodating through our time there. My husband commented on how immaculate the condition of the course was, the greens were impeccable and not too fast. He said it was challenging enough to make it enjoyable. That was made clear while I took to the pool as he played two more rounds at Boavista as opposed to his usual tradition of trying out the multitude of other options the Algarve has to offer in the realm of world-class golf courses. Complete with two outdoor pools, a spa, health club, indoor pool, two restaurants, there’s a little something for everyone at Boavista in Lagos. 45 minutes from Faro Airport, if you are not familiar with the area, it is characterised by a spectacular coastline with azure seas and sandy beaches framed by naturally-sculpted limestone rocks, which have formed magnificent caves and grottos. That’s to say, if you ever want to leave the property (I did not!), there’s always a beach just a few minutes away. In fact, one could easily live at

Boavista. And guess what? One can! Today, a plethora of luxury properties with sea and golf views, and attractive outdoor pools constitute a residential oasis where the delights of the Algarvian lifestyle can be enjoyed by its owners and guests alike. Sales director and maven of hospitality, Ann Laws, is like the expat mum of my dreams. She arranged our meals at the clubhouse and The Bistro, the latter located in Boavista’s Bela Colina Village, our home for a blissful four days. This luxury accommodation affords magnificent views of either the pristine waters of the Atlantic Ocean or the rolling Monchique mountains. Furnished to high standard, each townhouse provides two double bedrooms and living areas that cater to fit all needs. Rama em Flor, the festival that celebrates queer culture and communityThe third edition of the feminist queer festival, Rama em Flor will be running until September.

Through debates, concerts, art exhibitions and more,

the festival seeks to empower the voices of this community.Creating, connecting, and supporting. That’s what Rama em Flor is all about. When Daniela Ribeiro and Rodrigo Araújo started this festival back in 2016, the idea was to gather a community – that was already reflecting on queer issues – and give

them more visibility by creating a platform where they can show their work, express their thoughts, and lift their voices. Inspired by the Ladyfest, born in 2000 from the riot grrrl movement, the creators of Rama em Flor wanted to organize a festival here in Lisbon that celebrates feminism and queer culture, through transdisciplinary, heterogeneous and inclusive programs. When Daniela and

Rodrigo decided to move forward with the idea, they wanted to find a name that connected it with their Portuguese roots. “Rama em Flor can be associated with wild plants and flowers which bud and bloom. It is also a way of referring to a group of vegetation/flora that is deemed irrelevant or invisible”, Beatriz, Daniela and Raquel, the coordinators of the festival, tell me. Flowers have long been associated

with social and feminist fights. Rama em Flor can mean many things to different people “but the name will always be tied with struggle, growth, continuity and union”, the team insists.Rama em Flor is a local festival made by the people, for the people. The festival tells the stories of the queer community’s experiences in the city. “It is important because it seeks to give visibility to people and subjects that, only belong to a small part of society”, explain the three women. “We assert ourselves as a representative of feminist and queer issues, seeking to integrate these into [general society].” For the next three months, the intersectional festival, will organize concerts, art exhibitions and debates around racial issues, trans care, networks, ecofeminism and queer curatorships. “Our purpose is to create connections between people, either by sharing artistic work, connecting artists, ideas or experiences linked to being queer and from minority communities”, the trio tells me.“There is a social responsibility to make Rama happen”A festival, a community, but most importantly, Rama is a safe space for collective reflection, dialogue and sharing, in a free and inclusive way. The coordinators’ main goal is to “increase female, trans, non-binary and non-white representation, incite political awareness, civic activity and encourage freedom of gender identities and expressions”. The group believes that a driving force of united voices leads to progress. “We are all friends and politically engaged, we believe in change and evolution. Rama em Flor is nothing more than this

belief in the possibility of the collective making a difference. We almost feel that there is a need, there is a social responsibility to make Rama happen”.But change doesn’t come easily… Or for free. This year, Rama em Flor has received financial support from the Lisbon Municipality, under the RAAML (Regulation for the Allocation of Support by the Municipality of Lisbon). It is a support for entities dedicated to the promotion of the well-being and quality of life of the population, through the implementation of programs, projects or activities that pursue the municipal interest. The team of Rama applied for this financial support and won. However, “the amount is very low”, they say. “It does not cover 15 percent of the total budget of the festival, but it is an important help and thankfully we got it. The rest of the expenses we fill with other partnerships”. To help fund the rest of the festival, Rama em Flor organised a fundraiser on 15 May, raising enough money to cover the production costs of a big event they are planning. “Gradually we are able to find solutions for the festival to happen”, Beatriz, Daniela, and Raquel tell me. “Of course, if we had a very large budget to manage

everything, it would be easier, but as a non-profit community festival, all the partnerships we establish are important bonds that are created and that allow us to raise awareness on these issues”. In a supporting environment such as Rama em Flor, bonds are sacred. With the pandemic and mandatory curfews, it became clear to Beatriz and Daniela that they simply could not “lose ties with the community, at a time when everything was about distance, and the impossibility of touching, or meeting”. Thankfully, artists, participants and anyone attending the festival can make up for lost time with three months of political, social and cultural events. Due to the current situation, the coordinators of Rama have decided to host one event per day, instead of the three or four as in previous editions. They have also decided to restrict all events to the weekend. “It made sense to dilute the festival over time, slow down and extend the festival without overloading the team or spaces. The return to social and cultural life is not easy for all people after being away so long from everything. This way we can guarantee that there is plenty of time and space for more people to join Rama em Flor”.

“Libertin - Briefe aus Lissabon” by Konstantin ArnoldI had the pleasure of speaking with a refreshing young author, Konstantin Arnold about his debut German book entitled “Libertin - Briefe aus Lissabon”.

This is the first book in the series which is out now and Konstantin has already finished

the second story called “Caprice” and told me that his third book is underway. “Libertin” has also been cinematically realised by the Film Project under the same name starring Mariana Monteiro

and Beatriz Barosa. Konstantin moved to Lisbon permanently in 2017 but has always had a strong relationship with the city since he initially came here to surf. Konstantin told me that he is from Germany, but he feels most at home in Portugal and says: “It has been a journey and I would rather

die here than live anywhere else.” He writes for newspapers and magazines and travels a lot by writing stories and features around the world. This first story is a declaration of love to a city which encapsulates a love story. “It is about the Portuguese sense of life and all the overlooked poetic trifles of a world spinning too fast. To find what he’s really looking for, he must

venture to the very limits of himself.” Konstantin told me “I live what I write and I write what I live. There is no plan behind it, I always wrote as a way to be my own psychologist and I had this urge to express myself, but when I moved to Lisbon something happened in me and I became a bit more myself, I met a girl that

also pushed me further.” He went on to tell me that “Libertin is about arriving in the city and finding love, whilst the next book for instance is about how to keep it and how to live in the city. Konstantin also expressed what a fundamental role his girlfriend, Catarina, has had on him as she really believed in him as a writer and made him take his work seriously. Catarina is the reason for these stories, putting them out to the world and she is that person that really drives and inspires me.”Additionally, Konstantin also told me that there is a book tour planned, taking place in Germany, including his home town. I asked if there were plans for a book tour in Portugal as it has been very well received but he told me that they first need the book to be translated into Portuguese but at the moment the translation costs have not been covered. “These are the people that should read it because

it is an outside perspective of their country.” He also told me that “Libertin” is available in bookshops in Lisbon. There is a film adaptation of “Libertin” directed by Pascal Thieret which Konstantin was very involved in as he wanted to make it a truthful script, stating “there was a lot of momentum but Covid came and it stopped production and now there is a problem with the financing, which they need to resume filming. They are waiting for this and they are very open to a natural cooperation, who understand his vision and wish to invest in a project that is being so well received. They are still looking for supporters for this project, so if you are interested, please contact them via: [email protected] or [email protected], if you are interested in watching this incredible trailer, please check out www.libertin-film.com.

Atlas of Amazing Architecture: The most incredible buildings you’ve (probably) never heard of- Peter Allen

Cardboard Cowboys – Brian Conaghan

This book is aimed for children between 7 and 13 years old.

The atlas explores architectural wonders, not the normal buildings that usually appear in books like these i.e. the pyramids or the Taj Mahal. The book takes a different and broader view of what is considered architec-ture.

Some of these include Native American plank houses in New Mexico, Stave Church-es in Norway, The Djinguereber mosque in Mali, and the extraordinary 18th century

wooden churches on Kizhi Island, Russia. There are over 50 buildings and each of

them are striking and capture the essence or spirit of a particular time.

The author Peter Allen, is a well-estab-lished illustrator of children’s books, whose work has been published extensively by Usborne and Walker.

The illustrations are fresh and the book has a whimsical feel about it. It’s unusual and delightful and it should definitely be on any parents list!

This book is aimed for children between 9 and 12 years old.

Lenny is the kid who your heart aches for. He does not fit in, is different and attracts the attention of bullies.

The book explores Lenny’s story. His brother, parents and the tension that exists between them all. He meets a homeless man, Bruce. They start a journey and form a surprising friendship. The book explores how it feels not to have a home or hav-ing a home that is sad.

It’s a book about a special friendship and has a great message.Ultimately their relationship helps Lenny see himself differently and in a more positive light.

The author, Brian

Conaghan now lives and works in the Scottish town of Coatbridge. His previous children’s books have been shortlisted for awards.

This book is wonderful, heartwarming and a must read!

Together - Emma Dodd This book is aimed at children between

2 and 5 years old. The story revolves around a sea otter

that loves spending time with his mum-my and explores them playing together, lots of hugs and learning new things. The book forms part of the author’s animal series

The text is lovely and rhymes, plus the illustrations are wonderful and heart-warming. There are metallic accents on

every page and this adds a special magic to the book and children will love the way the pages sparkle.

The author, Emma Dodd studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central Saint Mar-tin’s School of Art. Many of her books have been shortlisted for awards.

The book is a good size, with a lovely mes-sage. The story is not too long so you should be able to keep your child’s attention. This story is bound to be a favorite for any child!

A steppe in the right directionLPN’s sustainable Castro Verde programme

LPN stands for the Liga para a Protecção da Natureza (League

for the Protection of Nature) and they are the oldest environmental NGO in the Iberian Peninsula, created in 1948. Their mission is to defend the environment, conserve natural heritage and biodiversity through intensive fieldwork and landscape management, research training and awareness.Today I’m going to tell you about one of their projects they have in Castro Verde in the Campo Branco region of the Alentejo. Since 1993

they have been trying to protect the steppe avifauna in the region. But, first off, what are steppe birds? I don’t mean to be presumptuous, I mean maybe you know, but I didn’t. Steppe birds are terrestrial birds that live in open plains. In this case, LPN is working to protect the great bustard (Otis tarda), the little bustard (Tetrax tetrax), the kestrel (Falco naumanni), the crane (Grus grus), the black-bellied cortiçol (Pterocles orientalis), the Montagu’s harrier (Circus pygargus), as well as others. All of these are endangered species. The steppes are recognized

nationally and internationally for their importance, but unfortunately they are under threat due to many human activities, including their destruction/modification by afforestation, intensive agriculture practices and irrigation farming, and even the construction of large solar power generation plants. To combat all this, LPN has been setting up several projects aimed at preserving sustainable agricultural systems used to grow crops on arable dryland; conserving soil and water; improving agricultural technologies; as well as providing education and environmental awareness

and supporting the rural socio-economy. They work with farmers to ensure that agricultural practices remain the same and also ensure that they stop farming in the reproductive season to give any ‘love birds’ time to find a place to nest and safely raise a family.LPN has acquired in this region nearly 2000 hectares of land important for steppe birds, which makes it the biggest private area dedicated to biodiversity conservation in Portugal. They have also erected artificial nest boxes, developed courses focused on environmental education and ecotourism in its Vale Gonçalinho Centre, and created trails to allow tourists to visit the place without disturbing the birds or the hard-working farmers. They have won prizes for this program: European Ford Conservation Award / Mediterranean Honorific Award / Best LIFE-Nature Projects 2013 European Award. However, their greatest accomplishment was the classification of the region as Castro Verde Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO’s Man & The Biosphere program. The Campo Branco region is well known for bird watching and LPN even has an educational centre (Centro de Educação

Ambiental de Vale Gonçalinho) where they provide information about the various species, where best to spot them, etc. (However, during the pandemic unfortunately

this has not been possible). If you are interested in finding out more about this project, or any of their various others throughout Portugal, then visit their website www.lpn.pt

26 The Portugal News · 26 June 2021 ArtsN Jake CleaverSpinning a gripping yarn

Meet the lady who is connecting the threads to Portugal’s past

I had heard of spinning wheels in fairy tales like Rumpelstiltskin, for example, and I

also knew that when the evil queen Maleficent found out she was the only one not to be invited to Sleeping Beauty’s christening, she flew into a fury and set a curse that on her 16th birthday the princess would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. A little harsh, and a good fairy did manage to weaken the curse somewhat, to just send her into a deep sleep. But still,

her overprotective parents ordered all the spinning wheels in the kingdom to be disposed of. And, except for that one that Sleeping Beauty inevitably pricked her finger on (though lack of practice) when it magically appeared 16 years later, I would say that they did a pretty damn good job. I mean, I had never seen one before. That’s why when I walked into the ‘Mercadinho’ (which is now back on Saturday mornings in the historic centre of Loulé) and I saw this lady sitting peacefully next to this

beautiful revolving wooden wheel, I found myself completely spellbound and mesmerized. People were walking past, equally surprised and enchanted by this spinning contraption, and while they curiously admired her display of wonderful hand-knitted creations, she sat serenely feeding in her wool which unfurled, whirled and then twirled itself into yarn. Eventually, I got over my astonishment and went over to say hello. The hand-spinners name was Susan Sutherland and

she was more than happy to have a little chat with me, and indeed, proceeded to spin another kind of gripping yarn about her life and how, even though she had learned to knit when she was little, she had all but forgotten how, until she taught herself again 7 years ago. She enjoyed it so much that she started her own company called Ovelha Negra Knits (I think Sue thinks of herself as a ‘black sheep’) and began selling her woolly-wares in local artisan markets. However, she told me that during this time she had become frustrated that, even though Portugal is full of sheep, she couldn’t seem to find any affordable local wool to knit with. Now, this is an example of something good coming out of the pandemic. You see, Sue is a cook by trade and runs a catering business, which of course, came to a standstill last year and Sue suddenly had the time to sit and learn how to spin her own yarn. The world of wool all sounds very technical and, I’ll be honest, as Sue talked incredibly knowledgeably about all the spinning and knitting terms - she sent my head spinning too, just trying to keep up.She explained how she uses wool from local Portuguese ‘Merino’ sheep. But she also said that it ’s difficult to source, as even though there are indeed plenty of sheep that have to be sheared, for the wool to be any good for spinning it has to be a consistent length. And since this is time-consuming and expensive (and there’s not much demand for it) farmers don’t usually bother and this natural resource generally goes to waste. Sue also told me that Portuguese sheep are a lot hardier (I guess they have more thorns and tough terrain to deal with) than English sheep, and so their wool takes a lot more work ‘carding’ (I think that’s the

right word) to remove all the bits and pieces and get it ready to be spun.Once she’s spun a yarn, Sue also enjoys dyeing them lots of different funky colours (I’m sure there’s a technical term for that as well, but I’ve forgotten it). At her stall, she was selling things like hats, jumpers, bags and even adorable woolly animals that she has knitted. But you can also just buy her yarn so that you can knit something yourself. And, if you wouldn’t have the faintest idea where to start, she even has a kit that includes a pair of bamboo knitting needles and instructions on how to knit your own woolly hat.Sue has lived in Portugal for 32 years now, but more in the Lagos area having only moved to Loulé relatively recently. But she made a big point to tell me about how happy she has been to find the Loulé Criativo project and is now part of their Loulé Design Lab team, where she has met lots of other interesting local artists. Here she teaches a different kind of ‘spin class’

and delights in passing on her knowledge to others to help revive this traditional and increasingly lost art.She told me that these days everybody has gotten a bit ‘knit-picky’ and stopped wanting wool products, and instead prefer fast-fashion and short-lived synthetic fibres. This is a shame, Sue said, as wool is a natural and renewable resource that is soft, warm and comfortable. It’s also extremely durable, and even when it does eventually wear out it can easily be mended. This is certainly true. I mean, I would tell you the story about the time I fixed a hole in my sock, but that’s another darn yarn...If you want to find out more about Sue, then look her up on Facebook or Instagram at Ovelha Negra Knits. Also, from now until October, the Loulé Mercadinho will now be on every Saturday in the historic centre between 10 am and 2 pm. So, if you want to see some more enchanting local artists, or even see Sue (who will be back again on the 26th of June) then be ‘shorn’ to go and check it out.

Up Close and Personal with Snakes I don’t know why, but I am always a bit fearful of

snakes, even when I know most won’t kill me.

DAISY is three months old. We saved her from being drowned along with her four siblings . She is just a baby and needs to find someone who can properly care for her . Could you help ? She is a small dog , about 12kgs.Call Caroline 926660465

I wondered if this was a breeding season as snakes seem to be quite conspicuous recently,

but I found out that the warm weather has more likely brought them all out of hibernation at the same time. However, one of Portugal’s most common snakes, the Ladder Snake, breeds during May and June and will lay a clutch of 4 to 24 eggs 3–6 weeks after mating. Incubation takes between 5 and 12 weeks, so the hatchlings won’t be around for a few weeks yet.I think it’s the way they move that I find creepy, and they do it fast if the mood takes them - how can a creature move that fast without legs, I ask myself. And that weird way of smelling, tasting the air, with the tongue flicking out. All a bit alien if you ask me! I remember as a child playing out in the woods with some other kids and a grass snake slithered across the pathway from a stand of bamboo, effectively cutting our group in two, while we all stood there shrieking like headless chickens.Last year we had two inside our cisterna, one very dead, but the other very much alive and wriggly, and it managed to wind itself around the pool pole we offered it as an escape route. This month, one of my dogs had been mesmerised by the underside of the porch outside the house, and last week I stared too and was rewarded by seeing a small

snake looking back at me, its coils loosely looped over a wooden strut. Don’t know who was more alarmed, it or me! Then this week, the same dog starts barking over the fence, and I see a snake as fat as a hosepipe slithering into the long grass. There are obviously plenty around, and I found the discarded skin of one while I was weeding too – not big enough to make a handbag out of, and in fact, it was barely big enough for a watch-strap!Snakes always get a bad rap, especially when they are collectively called ‘cobra’ by the Portuguese. They are certainly not cobras, it’s just the Portuguese word for ‘snake’ - so no need to head for the hills yet. I believe there are eight species of harmless snake here, and maybe two to be cautious of - both are vipers, Seoane’s Viper and the Lastaste Viper being the ones to avoid. In fact, most snake bites are caused by people trying to catch and handle them as opposed to being stalked or hunted by them. Having said that, it would be wise to keep away from the business end of any snake, and seek urgent medical attention after a bite, whether the victim be human or a pet! What do snakes eat, I

wondered. They are all carnivores, and their diet depends on the species. Some eat warm-blooded prey such as rodents, birds or rabbits, while others eat insects, frogs, toads, eggs, other reptiles, fish, earthworms, or slugs. I also wondered if they eat snails, which drive me nuts eating my plants, and apparently they do - and to extract their escargot, the snakes push their lower jaws into the shell and grasp the flesh of the slimy critter with their curved teeth.

They are welcome to as many as they can find to be honest. Would save me having to give the ones I find flying lessons over the wall.I wondered about the largest snake in the world, and the answer depends on whether you want length or weight. The reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) is the longest snake in the world, regularly reaching over 6.25 meters in length, and the longest ever recorded was found in 1912 and measured a staggering 10 meters. Green anacondas

are the heaviest snakes in the world, the heaviest ever recorded being 227 kilograms (which is quite a lot, when you consider that an average human male weighs around 85 kg). This massive snake was 8.43 meters long, with a girth of 1.11 meters.Deep down, I know snakes get a raw deal. After all, Eve shouldn’t have listened to the serpent, and she didn’t have to eat that apple in the Garden of Eden, did she? And for his troubles, the snake never got his legs!

The Portugal News · 26 Jun 202128 GardeningN Marilyn SheridanTrees… And childhood memories

I was intending to write about the numerous trees that are found in Portugal

– and there are a good few varieties – and it got me thinking of trees in general, and I have been sidetracked by memories. When I was a kid, there was a holly tree just

around the corner from where I lived which was a favourite place to make a ‘camp’, where generations before had fashioned a den inside, and a gang of us kids would climb inside it and take food and drink in there, or pretend we were aboard a pirate ship, or whatever. Whoever got

there first claimed it for the day, sometimes the girls got it, sometimes the boys. When my kids were growing up, we had a banyan tree in the garden, and the neighbourhood kids would play inside the ‘roots’ that grew down or hung ropes between the

roots, and if anyone fell, there was a bed of leaves to fall into, so nobody got really hurt.Trees sometimes are just begging to be climbed and used to be magnets for kids, and I look out of my window now and see avocado trees, ancient olive trees and alfarrobeiras, and almost wish I could have a go at climbing one!I will tell you my fateful story of tree climbing. As a 5-year old growing up, I suppose I was allowed a certain amount of ‘roaming free’, with rules of not going out of sight of the house and keeping off the road, pretty easy instructions even at that age. But of course, round the corner was not allowed, which made it all the more desirable, and inevitably I sneaked off out of bounds to climb a small tree. Unfortunately for me, this was my undoing, because being a small child I wasn’t yet an experienced tree-climber (well you have to start somewhere don’t you?), and I slipped halfway up the tree – but got caught by the straps of my dungarees, and ended up hanging there, like a failed parachutist. The little boy I was with had the unenviable job of running home to my mother to confess where we had gone, and she had to rescue me. I was more frightened of the repercussions of this than actually hurting myself !My husband tells stories of climbing a mighty oak, with footholds of 6-inch nails hammered in years gone by, and even though the boughs were sometimes wet or mossy, he and his gang showed some bravado by climbing

up as far as they could and hung on tight as the branches waved to and fro.Nowadays kids don’t play like this. Too much ‘Health & Safety’ abounds - are kids becoming too precious? We would fall and scrape elbows and knees, give it a lick and wipe it with a dirty finger, and carry on playing. Today it would involve washing in sterile water, application of antiseptic and a band-aid. Children seem to be glued to keyboards, obsessed by computer games these days – playing indoors instead of being outside in the fresh air using their imaginations, and maybe pretending to be fighting with sticks (and accidentally hitting each other or skinning knuckles in the process!). We would chew on grass, with never a care that a dog might have peed on it, made mud-pies and ran around

playing games. It seems a shame that modern technology has robbed today’s youngsters of a chance to explore, experiment and use their imaginations in play. Or have I got it totally wrong? Is the digital age of play a good thing? Is this the way to prepare them for the real world? Perhaps I am looking back through rose-tinted glasses at a post-war age when we played with nothing because we had nothing else but our imaginations. But I still think nothing compares with climbing a good tree – the excitement felt as you climbed higher, the fear that you might actually fall, the trembling limbs as you reached the ground again. I still vividly remember this though many years have passed, but will today’s kids remember successes at winning a battle at a keyboard?

Mirror, Mirror on the WallOr anywhere you want it really!

There are several good reasons for putting a mirror on your

wall, and it isn’t necessarily just for you to check on your hair on the way out! It can enhance natural light – by placing a large mirror directly across from a window you will bring additional light into the room, and with the mirror reflecting incoming light, it will naturally make the room feel brighter. It can create the feel of a larger room - a floor-to-ceiling mirror (a trick you often see on sliding bedroom closet doors) gives the illusion of a larger space, or you can accentuate furniture or a room feature – by hanging a mirror above the mantle, a sofa, (or even above the bed, if you are that way inclined), or another feature you want to highlight, it will naturally draw the eye to that spot. And it will add flair – a backsplash of mirrored tiles in the kitchen or bathroom adds sparkle and reflects colours in the room.Specially waterproofed mirrors can be used with good effect in the garden too, reflecting back greenery. For example, a framed collection of maybe six or eight mirrors each 20 cms or so placed at the top half of a plain door to look like windows can create an optical illusion by using the reflection to appear as if the door opens out into another garden. Or another trick – putting a similar collection of mirrors on the blank side of a shed,

and maybe adding shutters and a small window box beneath – the plants don’t even have to be real ones, it is just to add interest and colour to a plain boring old wooden shed!On a personal level, being concerned with one’s reflection and exact appearance is a pretty modern invention, one most humans across history lived without - so they say. I am not so sure, I think people in past times were looking at themselves in pools of water – curiously maybe – as this was probably the only reflective surface they had, and a somewhat distorted image it would have been too, and I would put money on it that cavewomen would be checking themselves out to ensure the only available caveman dragged her off and not her neighbour! The earliest known mirrors were made from polished stone, and dated back as far as 6,000 BC, and were from Anatolia, or Asia Minor, which takes up the best part of western Turkey. Later, they were made from highly polished copper or lead and were hand-held, but actually only reflected 20% of the light they were exposed to.It wasn’t until as late as 1835 that Justus von Liebig, a German chemist, developed the silvered-glass mirror we know today, where a thin layer of metallic silver is put onto glass by the chemical reduction of silver nitrate. Modern mirrors have silver, aluminium or chrome backs due to

their high reflectivity, and often have a thin coating of paint on the back to protect the fragile reflective coating from corrosion or scratching. When mirrors are exposed to excess moisture, water can get between the layer of silver and the backing, which causes the bond to break and the silvering to chip off behind the glass. This leaves your mirror with unsightly dark spots or black edges where the silver has fallen away, which is usually a sign that the mirror itself is quite old.I found this interesting - Mercury glass, also known as silvered glass, contains neither mercury nor silver. It’s actually clear glass, mold-blown into double-walled shapes and coated on the inside

with a silvering formula, which is inserted through a small hole that is then sealed with a plug. A few manufacturers did, for a time, try to line their glass with a mercury solution; this practice was discontinued due to expense and toxicity, but it helps explain the origin of the misnomer.Mirrors aren’t always flat either - convex mirrors are often used at traffic intersections to help you see around tight corners, and concave mirrors are used in car headlights and in flashlights, to focus light into a long straight beam. And you can find mirrors that are distorted, in that they are both concave and convex in the same mirror - okay for fun houses and carnivals, but not for everyday use!

Culinary Institute of America explores Portugal Chances are you’ve heard of the world’s premier culinary college, the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).

With four campuses—Hyde Park, New York;

Napa Valley, California; San Antonio, Texas; and Singapore—this venerable institution was founded in 1947 and has since schooled some of the culinary greats, including their most famous graduate, Anthony Bourdain (’78), and forward-thinking Portuguese NYC chef, Georges Mendes (’92). If you’ve been fortunate, you may have toured their gorgeous grounds, eaten a meal in a student-run dining establishment, taken a class (online or in-person), or even graduated from the CIA. A foodies dream, right? In 2004, they launched their James Beard Award-winning World Culinary Arts Video Series, “seeking out the gold standards of culinary traditions, examining iconic recipes of a given country, that when understood, provide a window into the whole of that nation’s culture.” Each country or region’s edition begins with an introduction to their unique cuisine and culture then continues

with short master class episodes. In these, you’ll enjoy top chefs discussing flavours, ingredients, and techniques while preparing signature dishes. And, in true teaching form, you’ll find two free, downloadable recipe books—one from the CIA and one from the series’ generous supporter, Unilever—with each location they’ve visited. In 2020 Portugal was the focus—one of the world’s great food cultures—in the latest instalment of the CIA’s World Culinary Arts. Among the 21 videos exploring Portuguese gastronomy, we learn about what’s been called one of the world’s 20 best soups, Caldo Verde, the suckling pig (that Carl Munson from Good Morning Portugal! raved about) at Rei dos Leitoes, a visit to O Churrasco for the secret to their amazing spinach, and more in this in-depth series that captured our hearts. We sat down with CIA graduate (’97) and Director of Strategic Initiatives, Digital Media, John Barkley, to learn more about this instalment of the video series. Relish Portugal: Hello John and thank you for your

amazing, award-winning work and this detailed look at Portuguese cuisine. Let’s dive in with a look at the video series as a whole. John Barkley: My pleasure, really happy to join you. Thank you for inviting me. We’ve been producing this series for over 17 years, documenting the cuisines of the world, focusing on several key dishes of each cuisine. We look at both what’s happening on a street food or informal culinary level as well as what’s happening on the high end. In this series, we strive to provide insight into what makes authentic dishes authentic, what makes classic dishes classic, and what key ingredients and cooking techniques you need to know and master when cooking this cuisine in a restaurant or home kitchen. Our goal is to take a cross-segment of any given cuisine and document that for future generations of our culinary students and the media. Added to our archives at the CIA, we’re very happy to have this great, free online resource that’s available to everybody. It’s been underwritten by Unilever Food Solutions.

They are a partner in developing this and have been since the very beginning. We’ve travelled all over the world to many different countries and regions, Peru to Indonesia to Scandinavia to Spain and Italy, all over. Our most recent edition, still in progress, is centred on American barbecue, which is the first time we’ve focused on barbecue or the US. We’re making an effort to go around the world and add to the understanding of world cuisines.

RP: It’s an impressive collection of work. And Portugal, the 16th instalment of this documentary series. What brought you here and what’s so special about Portugal’s gastronomy? JB: We base our next location on many factors. Portugal is a special country in terms of its history in world trade and colonization. Also, Portugal is responsible for disseminating and exchanging many of the key ingredients and cooking techniques we employ today, such as frying. A lot of people don’t know that frying was introduced to Japan by the Portuguese. While we don’t know if it originated in Portugal, the Portuguese introduced tempura to Japan. There’s a deep history with Goa, in the Portuguese trade through there, as well as the Spice Islands and other regions throughout the world. I think Portugal has a unique place in European cuisine, as well as world cuisine, in terms of its history and legacy.RP: How do you choose what dishes, chefs, and locations to spotlight? JB: We have several different sources, a large extended family of adjunct faculty and contributors plus chef partners around the world. It’s a chorus of

voices. We reach out to those people and ask for recommendations. We also consider food guides such as Michelin. That’s part of the research. We compile the information we’ve gathered, sort through it, and do pre-interviews. Also, we work with chefs on the ground, recommending other chefs. They’ll say, “you’re coming to my place but you definitely want to check out this place.” Because we’re in the country for a limited amount of time, usually about two weeks, we boil it down to a small list. It ends up being nine intensive days of filming. We look at a cultural cross-section, from street food to cutting-edge types of restaurants as well as institutions that can’t be missed. RP: You had the good fortune of spending time with Chef JoséAvillez, a local hero and international culinary icon. Tell us a little bit about your time with him.JB: He was great. He took us to the market and showed us around a couple of his Lisbon restaurants. Chef Avillez is a very accomplished professional, very worldly, has travelled extensively, and has a vast network of chefs and food professionals. He was able to describe how modern contemporary Portuguese cuisine fits on the world stage and articulate the place that Portugal holds within that community. On the other side of the Atlantic, New York City’s Chef George Mendes at Aldea was able to provide a contemporary view on translating authentic world flavours for North American audiences. Flavours native to his country, true to their origin. RP: What surprised you most about Portuguese gastronomy?JB: Two things. First,

the vast and various connections to world cuisine. Filming this edition was a history lesson as well as a lesson in appreciating the tastes of each particular region. The abundance and quality of fresh ingredients was a revelation. With the history of the cuisine and Portugal’s amazing natural resources, chefs can do remarkable things. Excellent seafood is paired with simple applications: straightforward sauces or even just olive oil and garlic. That was deliciously apparent when we visited Marisqueira Cervejaria Ramiro. It’s the freshness, the diversity of the different seafood. Not just the many different prawns but different shellfish. That makes it special. RP: Can the home cook learn from/at the Culinary Institute of America? JB: Absolutely. Our World Culinary Arts Video Series and accompanying recipe books, exploring 25 locations, is available online, free. There are also online courses available. And we’ve just opened a limited number of multi-day culinary Boot Camps and one-day hands-on classes at our California, New York, and Texas campuses. Consider this an invitation, we’d love to see Relish Portugal readers there.

An advanced integrated approach in the treatment of chronic pain The HPA Health Group have entered into a partnership with Paincare, the largest clinic in Portugal dedicated to the treatment of chronic pain. The concept was developed by Dr Armando Barbosa, renowned Anaesthesiologist, known for a new approach in the treatment of pain.

Since its inception, Paincare has sought to innovate and keep up to date with the latest technology available

in the treatment of chronic pain. In a context where, traditionally, pain caused by pathologies associated with the spinal column was seen as a fatality to be endured, Paincare sought to master, with proven success, minimally invasive methods to combat pain and became pioneer in this area.

Paincare was committed from the very beginning to master the most advanced techniques to iden-tify and neutralize pain, performed by professionals with extensive experience in Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, among other spe-cialties that “have brought Paincare a huge diversity in the type of interventions it provides”. In fact,

the multidisciplinary treatment it offers is one of the main assets of the clinic, since “the patient feels permanently supported” through-out his recovery period. More than simply treating pain, this approach allows for a total understanding of the source of the problem, by reaching the correct diagnosis and subsequently the most effective and complete treatment possible.

Pain originating in the spinal column is the most common and can affect any age. Between the ages of 20 and 45 years, complica-tions of the vertebral discs are the most common cause of pain. In older patients there is a predom-inance of degenerative problems in the joints. This prevalence triggered in Dr. Armando Barbosa a desire to look for more effective, quicker and also almost painless therapies, such as the Eutermic

Laser, Ozone Therapy or Radiof-requency.

The Eutermic Laser consists of introducing an optical fibre in a precise location of the herniated disc, under X-ray control, reduc-ing the pressure on the interverte-bral disc and also the possibility of a recurrence (a goal that has been until now impossible to achieve). With mild sedation and local anaesthesia, the results are almost immediate.

Ozone Therapy for the treat-ment of herniated discs, has also become popular in recent years for the same reasons: efficacy, safety and a rapid recovery. Due to the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect of ozone gas, pain is eradi-cated in a perfect and safe manner, with results equal to those of conventional surgery and a lower rate of complications.

Radio Frequency is indicated for degenerative situations. High temperature electric current is applied under local anaesthesia to the nerve tissue that is causing the pain.

The partnership between the HPA Health Group and Paincare “arose naturally from our need to continuously improve the care available in the Algarve. HPA is a

reference in private health in the region and has a common denom-inator with Paincare: a permanent focus on technological innovation and professionals with differenti-ating skills”.

The Portugal News · 26 Jun 202132 HealthDon’t let these 5 summer health ailments dampen the funAs the mercury rises, these warm-weather health concerns can be more common.

With barbecues, pub gardens and days out on the

horizon, it’s easy to forget that warmer weather can lead to a whole host of bugs and sun-specific ailments.Sure, some carefree summer fun might be just what we all need, but it’s still worth being mindful of common seasonal health concerns, like these…

DehydrationWith temperatures already hotting up, dehydration

can be a real threat to your summer fun – and it can be dangerous too.“Dehydration occurs when there is a deficiency of fluid in the body, caused by not drinking enough water,” explains Dr Joshua Berkowitz, medical director at IV Boost UK. “About 60% of the body is made of water, but we lose fluids constantly throughout the day via sweat, urine and regular bodily functions such as breathing.”According to Berkowitz,

symptoms of dehydration can include excessive thirst, dark coloured urine, muscle tiredness, dizziness and light-headedness. The encouraging news is that people who have acute dehydration, often caused by prolonged physical activity, extreme heat exposure, or from not drinking enough water, can normally make a quick recovery through rest and rehydration.“In this case, it’s important to refrain from drinking

caffeine, alcohol and also reduce stress levels to improve hydration and recovery,” says Berkowitz. “Keep fluid levels high throughout the day, drinking water even when you’re not thirsty and supplementing with electrolytes.”

Insect bites and stingsSummer means embracing the great outdoors, but many insects love the heat, which means you’re more likely to encounter mosquitoes, bees and wasps.“Most insect bites and stings cause small localised reactions,” explains Dr Stephanie Ooi. “You may notice the area becomes red, raised and feels itchy, so use a cold compress over the area to reduce the swelling.”Easier said than done, but try not to scratch the area as any breaks in the skin may cause an infection to develop. “If you’ve been stung by a bee, you might want to try to remove the sting and venom sac if it’s visible,” Ooi adds. “You can scrape it out using your fingernails or something with a hard edge, such as a bank card – but don’t squeeze it out or use tweezers as this can spread

the venom. Wasps and hornets don’t usually leave the sting behind, so be aware they could sting again and calmly walk away from the area.”Ticks, meanwhile, should be removed as soon as possible to reduce the risk of getting an infection like Lyme disease. “For this, a pair of tweezers or tick removal tool is helpful,” she adds. “Try to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and firmly pull straight up, then wash with soap and water or antiseptic afterwards.”If the area is painful after, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, if suitable for you, may help.

SunburnGetting sunburnt just once every two years can triple your chances of developing skin cancer, according to Cancer Research UK, so take extra care to cover up with sunscreen, hats and clothing.“Sunburn occurs when UV radiation from the sun damages epidermal skin’s DNA and leads to cell death,” says Dr Susan Mayou, consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic. “At a cellular level, sunburn is associated with microscopic changes in the skin and inflammation.”You usually know if you’ve got sunburn – because your skin will be red and sore! Symptoms can also include swelling, tenderness and irritation, skin feeling hot to touch and, in severe cases, blistering and fever or chills. Mayou adds: “Severe cases of sunburn may result in second-degree burns, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, secondary infection and shock.”The best way to approach sunburn? Avoid getting it by taking all necessary sun safety measures. If it does happen, Mayou suggests: “Take a cool shower and apply a cold compress to the affected area for immediate relief.”Keep the skin hydrated with moisturiser too: “Aloe vera

has been proven to have excellent soothing properties and is anti-inflammatory, so very effective in calming the effects of sunburn.”AllergiesIf you have hay fever, your allergies will be worse when the pollen count is high, so try to plan ahead. “It’s also advisable to avoid grassy areas, particularly in the early morning, evening or night, when the pollen count is highest,” says LloydsPharmacy pharmacist Anshu Kaura.“When it comes to treating allergies, you can opt for a targeted treatment, which can help relieve common symptoms, including itchy, watery eyes.“If you experience a number of symptoms, an antihistamine tablet may be the best course of action. These stop the action of histamine, which is released during inflammatory process and causes the onset of symptoms.”

Food poisoningRates of food poisoning increase in summer, because bacteria grow faster in warmer weather and foods can quickly spoil. Plus, it’s easy to undercook meats on the barbecue (especially after you’ve already had a couple of beers in the sun!).“Food poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or a combination of the two,” says GP Dr Rachel Ward. The most important management of food poisoning is remaining well hydrated. “As you lose water, salt and sugars with diarrhoea and vomiting, rehydration sachets are an ideal way of replacing what you have lost. They’re usually available from your pharmacist,” says Ward.If you have underlying medical problems, such as diabetes or heart disease, Ward says you may need to take extra considerations with some medications, so check with your GP.

The healing power of breathingBreathing is such a natural and apparently involuntary movement and plays an important role in the quality of life.

Feeling blocked, having unhappy relationships with family members

or having troubles with the past? Are you feeling that you cannot achieve your life goals and fulfilment? Do you feel that you identify with any of these issues? These are some of the reasons that lead people to look for Rebirthing.Nuno Ribeirinha, therapist and a Rebirthing lover, has explained to The Portugal News what this treatment consists of. Five years ago, he also founded InspiraDaMente (breath from your mind, in English), that aims to spread in Portugal the therapeutic method of Conscious Breathing, Rebirthing, by Leonard Orr.“This breathing therapy started with studies in the 70s. The creator, Leonard Orr, found out that when we got rid of some blockages we started to breathe energy and, over the years, he began to see that it worked with him and started to try with other successfully”, until he created his own method. In this sense, Rebirthing works with some part of the life cycle at the level of meditation, “framing each stage of life with its most negative and positive moments, with limiting beliefs, with personal lies. Through this method,

mentally working these situations, we go beyond beliefs, clearing past hurts, traumas and go forward to a personal and professional development”, explained Nuno, who has studied Rebirthing Breathwork International in Spain. There are many breathing errors you are probably making, many of them caused by traumas and limitations. One of them is breathing through the mouth. “Our method is all nose breathing. The normal thing would be to always breathe through the nose because we only breathe through the mouth when we get scared or when we cry because breathing through the mouth is more cathartic”, he said. However, Nuno has had patients that, after many years thinking they were unable to do it, “started to breath through the nose again”.Tobacco addiction can also cause breathing problems that can be released with the treatment. After a session, “the smell that stays in the room is so intense that it seems that there were ten people smoking there. You realise that there was a cleansing of the lungs, because you smell it. Despite not being scientifically proven, people report that they have relief ”, Nuno Ribeirinha told The Portugal News.At the behavioural level, from addictions, compulsive behaviour,

abandonment, among others, that are marked and later guided to behaviours and to paradigms throughout life, “we fall into repetitions due to those beliefs, that can be healed with Rebirthing”.That’s why in ten sessions of 2h each, Nuno tries to help his patients to remove these self limitations. For this reason, the scope of the therapy is wide; it can be used for many proposes. After completing all the sessions, the patient is supposed to be able to breathe automatically in the future, carrying out their self healing process. However, Nuno doesn’t make any promises, because he believes that it is the patient who decides, even unconsciously, what they are going to treat and sometimes it may not correspond to the expectation that they had in the first place. “We do not guarantee anything, each human being who is in front of us will go wherever they want to go, sometimes people

have an expectation, but deep down they end up dealing with different issues and, after all, those issues are what really matters in that moment for that person”, explained Nuno.“Rebirth, breathe, come out as new”. After a session, people often see themselves as new with a luminous skin, another joy on their faces. There are even comments saying that they haven’t seen

themselves with that face for a long time”, he said.Find out more at: https://

“With the T20 World Cup only a few months away, this summer is about perfecting our team and continue to progress on the field,” said England head coach Chris Silverwood ahead of the three matches against Sri Lanka. This programme features highlights of today’s series-concluding match at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, and the last week or so should have given Silverwood and the selectors plenty of pointers ahead of the tournament in India in October and November. The sides last met here in this format in July 2016, when Jos Buttler hit 73 not out to guide England to an eight-wicket triumph.

Monday, 28 JuneWimbledon 2021 (BBC2, 10.30am)

Last summer, for the first time since the Second World War, there was no play possi-ble at Wimbledon, and that fallow year has left tennis fans even more excited than ever as action returns to SW19’s hallowed grass courts. The winner of the French Open men’s singles title at Roland Garros a fortnight ago, Novak Djokovic, will begin the defence of Wimbledon crown he won in the 2019 final against Philipp Kohlschreiber on Centre Court this afternoon. But before the Serbian world No.1 and co get the action under way on the show courts, Sue Barker will be presenting tennis features and action from the outside courts, where there will be plenty of British interest and even the chance of an early upset.

Tuesday 29 JuneBates Motel (BBC One, 12mid-night & 12.45am)

In the first part of tonight’s double bill, Norma tells Romero about her dream to renovate the Bates house, and he responds by revealing the money he took from Bob on the night of his murder. Over at Pineview, Norman is creating papier-mâché and finds a newspaper clipping about his mother’s mar-riage to Romero. Then, as Romero stays away from the Bates house to help Norman adjust to a normal life again, Rebecca is picked up at the airport by the DEA, who tell her they are actually after Romero in connection with Bob’s disappearance.

Another Residency/Vaccination letter

EDITOR, Late last year my husband and I applied for Portuguese Residen-cy, my husband, having a British passport, had no problems through Balcão Unico Municipal Portimao, in fact the procedure was very efficient and he in due course received his Residency Certificate, health number & has now had his 2nd Covid-19 vaccination. Alas not the same for having a New Zealand passport. Started the process registering & receiving a Fiscal number, so far so good. Next step an appointment with SEF, well 8 months later, having explored every avenue possible, still no appointment. After reading the article ' Immigration Association denounce "Mafias" that sell SEF appointments, in The Portugal News 5 June, 2021, I perhaps can understand why. Unfortunately no Residency equates to no health number to no Covid-19 vaccination. Registered for the vaccine as required but heard nothing. Then it was announced that any one over the age of 70 could get vaccinated without an appointment. Off I went to the Portimao Covid 19 centre only to be told no health number, no vaccination. They would only look at people without a health number once everyone who has a health number has been vaccinated.

If my memory serves me correctly the Government announced last year that because of Covid-19 anyone

who had started the process for residency / citizenship, which I had, would be treat-ed as if they had successfully completed the process to prevent them being discrimi-nated against for health care, benefits etc.

SO through NO fault of my own I am denied the Covid-19 vaccination. This is blatant discrimination and a breach of my human rights. Portugal government shame on you.

PS: If anyone, who does not have a British passport, has obtained an appoint-ment with SEF I would love to hear from you.

Portugeuese Drivers

EDITOR, Lying in bed at Faro Hospital following surgery, I fully concur with Susan & Tyrone Rosser (letters 12th June) regard-ing the first class national health service (SNS) here in Portugal. Having had the same surgical procedure carried out several years ago in the private sector, I hasten to add at great expense, I can unequivocally state that the SNS is by far and away streets ahead in patient care and clinical thoroughness. My wife also has cause to be grateful to the national health service here having had both shoulders replaced plus a new hip. Testimony to the surgeons skill and nurs-ing aftercare is the fact that at the tender age of 71 she participates in seven sessions each week at a local gym.

In another letter the same

week Mr A Davies castigates Portuguese drivers. Whilst the standard of driving on the country’s roads leaves a lot to be desired who knows what nationality the vehicle drivers are. There are reported to be over 500,000 legal residents of foreign origin here in this beautiful country, with many more living under-the-radar. So it is a distinct possibili-ty that the driver, with the Portuguese number plate, who fails to indicate or drives erratically is non Portuguese and has taken the driving test in another country. So I hope that Mr Davis, when next he is troubled by poor driving, stops the vehicle to check the driver’s nationality before suggesting that the only bad road users are Portuguese.

UK lobbyEDITOR, I don’t under-

stand if you are taking sides here but why try and get the UK to put Portugal on the green list? They abandoned us. They brought the variants. They are increasing their Covid numbers and ours.

Portugal must find another way to make money in the Algarve. How about inviting people from Canada who obey rules and not the UK who seem to come to Portu-gal to take their masks off.

Re: Climate Change (2)

EDITOR, “Planet Earth is trapping irradiated energy at an unprecedented and alarming level” is the report just released jointly by the U.S. agencies of NASA and NOAA. This finds that the net positive imbalance caused by a combination of decreased cloud cover of the oceans and increased green-house gases (anthropogenic forcing) in the atmosphere has doubled in the fifteen years to 2019 .

“Potentially the worst drought in 1,200 years” is the forecast of U.S. scientists for the states of California, Texas and Nebraska where temperatures have already reached highs of 42ºC and the prospect of catastrophic forest fires , water scarcity and a high death rate due to heat stroke is the harsh reality for Summer 2021.

The consensus of all these experts is that human activity, especially in the fields of fossil

fuel consumption and land use, is largely responsible for impending disaster. In the short term such activity must be brutally curbed by drasti-cally reducing the movement of people and goods, altering food consumption norms and reducing production to that of essentials. And in the long term the only practical policy is a planned reduction in population growth.

The “last chance” meeting of COP26 is now only five months away. Will the world leaders desist from their partisan stances and provide the UN with full authority to police our corrupt energy system ?

PickpocketsEDITOR, I refer to the

letter from Jim Carlson in last week’s The Portugal News. I am sorry to learn of his experience at the Quarteira produce weekly market.

It appears that the person he spoke to was a private security guard at the entrance of the market, but that no report of the theft was made to the GNR.

Regarding risk, the situation regarding pickpockets over

the last year has decreased considerably in Portugal (most likely due to Covid-19) from around 10,000 cases in 2019 to just over 3,000 last year. In so far as the Algarve is concerned, the decrease was from around 600 to just over 200. In Albufeira for instance it decreased from 199 in 2019 to 38 in 2020, mainly due to the absence of tourists.

I have spoken with GNR Loule and as far as Quarteira is concerned, in the last 3 months the number of re-ported pickpocketing cases is two, one near a beach and the other at the produce market, where money was stolen from a bag. Given the large number of people who attend this market, the risk is therefore very low.

There is certainly no reason to boycott the market as your correspondent suggests.

Pickpockets chose their

victims carefully and in any crowded place, it is important to take steps to safeguard your property, as one would anywhere. In markets, some of the common security lapses we have found includes: people displaying large wads of banknotes; placing their wallets and handbags on stalls, carrying handbags which are open with contents visible for example. Criminals look out for opportunities such as these and this is not just confined to markets. We have more prevention steps on our website: www.safecommuni-tiesportugal.com

Should you become a victim of crime this should be reported to the police in order that they are aware and appropriate action can be taken accordingly.

Vincicode is a three digit number (eg.384), presented in alphabetic figures, like ABC, in which ‘A’ represents the first digit (number 3), ‘B’ represents the second digit (number 8) and ‘C’ represents the third digit (number 4).Cracking the code is not difficult. Just remember:Any even number is dividable by one digit number of 2, or 4, or 6, or 8.• Any odd number finishes with 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9;• Any number which is not divisable by any one digit number, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9 finished

with 1, 3, 7 or 9;• Any number divisable by 5finishes with 5.For example :Let´s crack ABC code when:1) A, B and C are numbers between 1 and 9, included.2) A+B+C = 10 (the sum of A plus B plus C is 10).3) C >A >B (Number C is larger than number A which is larger than B).(4) ABC ÷ 4 (The three digit code is dividable by 4).

When the code, ABC is dividable by 4, then C,the third digit can be 2, 4, 6 or 8.C can´t be 2 or 4, because it does not cover the conditions (1) and (2).If C=6, then A+B= 4, and options are: A=4 and B=0 => ABC = 406 and A= 3 and B=1 =>ABC= 316 code ABC=406 doesn´t cover condition (4)If C=8, then A+B= 2 and the only option is

A=2 and B=0 which doesn´t cover condition (1)then: Vincicode is 316. Now your turn: Puzzle 190ABC is the three digit Vincicode number, in which A, B and C are numbers between 1and 9, included. Find the code ABC where : A+B+C = 26A = B > CABC ÷ 2

47The Portugal News · 26 Jun 2021GolfChez Carlos with banterLast weekend I took part in what could only be described as a very friendly grudge match; the stakes were low, but the banter was very high. I would imagine rarely has €5 been so ferociously contested over.

N Neil Connolly

The back story is this, I’ve gone out and played with a couple of my

regular lessons to see what they look like on the golf course, and this inevitably led to some competitive edge to the matches and from there the banter was born. Our opponents last Saturday were unbeaten, so they were feeling quite full of themselves and combined with the fact that their form, leading up until Saturday, was really good, they saw no reason why their unbeaten record was going to change. Hence why the match banter was pretty much full on with them even asking me if I was going to sign the €5 note this time?

What was really exciting about the match was that I had been invited to be part of the Chez Carlos golf society, and the venue for this outing was Palmares, one of my favourite golf courses in the Algarve. Something which you need to know about the Chez Carlos golf society, is that anybody can join, they are a very well organised society which has a long history of putting together ‘golf get togethers’ all along the Algarve. They are the perfect solution for the golfer who doesn’t want to pay for a full membership at a Golf Club, or doesn’t want to be stuck at the same Golf Club in the same clique. They play a huge variety of golf courses which allows

you to choose and experience the whole golf spectrum on offer. Nobody expects you to play, you just sign in for the day or course convenient for you on the website, follow the guidelines, and you’re included. The events are run almost every Wednesday and Saturday and because the society has been in operation for so long, the rates that they are able to negotiate are incredibly reasonable; for example 18 holes at Palmares with a buggy, was less than €75. Everybody was friendly and excited about playing together, each with the common purpose of competing individually and enjoying

their golf in a stress-free environment, where all of the organisation for the day had been taken on by the society’s Captain. The pinnacle of the events that they organise are the Nations Cup and the Prestige Event which are held over a combination of Monte Rei, Laranjal, Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo. It was really an eye-opening experience and one that I would 100% recommend to the golfer reading this who would like to meet new people and play new Golf courses for a great price.Anyway, back to the match; the one variable that my opponents hadn’t considered was that I knew the golf course very well, and my playing partner’s confidence was trending very much in the right direction, when you’re playing off a two handicap that can be devastating.I can say with great pleasure, that the five euro note you see in the picture was handed to me by one of my opponents,

after a five and four loss. To be honest, I’m not sure what gives me more pleasure, knowing how much it hurt for the player to hand it over, or me being able to tell you about it.

Here is the Chez Carlos Golf Society’s website, have a look and I hope you have as good an experience as I did!https://www.algarve-golfsociety.com/

Algarve home to Pitch football showPitch football at the Euros, a Sky TV sports show that is following up the UEFA Euro2020 tournament is being filmed in Almancil, Algarve. Former England football captain, Paul Ince, Sky

Sports reporter Abi Davies and TV and radio reporter Ian Chambers have all flown to the Algarve from the UK to host the new TV

show which will be on air daily until 12 July.In addition to the presenters who appear every day on the show, they are joined by guests to comment on the games and tournament in general, with one of the goals of the show being to interact with people, whose opinion is sometimes left behind in the sports world, “giving them a voice”. For this reason, in the TV show, presenters and guests not only review the games and make predictions about results, including which teams they believe will be champions and who will be the man of the match each day, they also engage with football fans who share their opinions through the Pitchsports App. Pitchsports is an APP that allows users to interact with the TV Show through their phones. “You can pick your score, predict what’s going to happen in the game and get engaged with other fans. It’s like an online community for

football fans”, explained Susannah Schofield OBE, the Owner & Founder of Pitch Sports App and organiser of the TV Show.“The feedback has been great, better than we anticipate, so we are very pleased that we’ve built a good following and that we have a very good interaction in the App”, said Susannah, adding that it is always hard to start a new TV Show.“This is the first time we have produced a football show and it is also the first time we are recording in the Algarve which is exciting. Portuguese football fans are so passionate”, she said.Pitch football at the Euros is broadcast on the channel 437, at 1:00 pm on weekdays and at 2:00 pm during the weekends and is being recorded everyday between 10:00 am and 12:00 am in Tribulum restaurant in Almancil. The TV Show is broadcasted on Sky TV, on the Pitchsports App news feed and on the YouTube Chanel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe8r9NCXgEQ3T2IcQQpp_dg

João Sousa back on topJoão Sousa has regained the status of Portuguese tennis number one, leap frogging Pedro Sousa in the table led by Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Despite rising in the Portuguese ranks, the 32-year-old from Guimarães, has dropped 11 positions in the world rank-ings and is now in 120th place.

Pedro Sousa, 33, is now in 121st place in the ATP ranking, after dropping 13 places in the table.

Portuguese players Frederico Silva and João Domingues are currently ranked in

176th and 242nd places, respectively.Gastão Elias, unlike João Sousa,

Pedro Sousa, Frederico Silva and João Domingues, climbed some levels in the ranking, after his appearance in the semi-finals in the Forli challenger, in Italy, and is now ranked 245th, while Nuno Borges dropped one position to 269th place and Gonçalo Oliveira is in 296th

place. In the female rankings, led by the

Australian Ashleigh Barty, with Japanese Naomi Osaka and Romanian Simona Halep, in second and third places, there was only one change among the top 10, with the rise of the Ukrainian Elina Svito-lina to fifth position, over taking American Sofia Kenin, who is now placed in sixth.
