Brent Boring of Manhattan, Kansas has been a part of the KSDS fam-ily for over 20 years. Brent joined the Board of Directors in 2001 and became Co-CEO in 2014. In addition, he and his wife Marcia are raising their 13th puppy, Bailey. When Marcia retires this fall, Brent has de-cided to resign as CEO so that they have more freedom to travel. We are saddened that Brent will not be CEO, but he has agreed to continue as a member of the Board of Directors. And of course, there is Miss Bailey who will continue to be their pride and joy as a breeder for KSDS.

Brent represents what’s right about KSDS! He supports the mission of this organization and is our number one cheerleader. Brent has for years

ended each graduation with genuine appreciation to the graduates, trainers, supporters, volunteers, staff and puppy raisers for all that they do. Brent continually expects the best and applauds the efforts of all who make KSDS an outstanding organization. His passion for KSDS and his leadership are greatly appreciated. And, we probably don’t tell you often enough Brent, but we think that you are just “super” and we love you and all that you do.

As you and Marcia (and Bailey) embark on a new phase of your life, please know that we wish you “happy and safe travels.”

KSDS welcomes Sandy Bartkoski of Seneca, KS as Co-CEO beginning in Septem-ber 2016. Sandy is a puppy raiser (PR) and is presently raising Clutch her eighth KSDS puppy in training (PIT). Sandy heard about KSDS from an article in the Wichita Eagle over 20 years ago. Due to the poor health of her parents, she waited until 2006 to begin raising her first pup, Watkins. She has been involved as a PR, a supporter and volunteer ever since. She presently serves on the Puppy Raiser Advi-sory Committee. Sandy, along with her husband Bob, enjoy gardening, golfing and assisting Bob’s elderly parents to remain in their home.

Sandy brings to KSDS over 35 years of school counseling experience including administrative responsibilities. She received her B.S. degree from Fort Hays State University and her M.S. degree from Kansas State University. Her administrative certification was earned at FHSU. Sandy is excited to continue her involvement with the KSDS family.

Sandy stated, “KSDS is an outstanding organization with an admirable mission. Over the years, I have witnessed how these canine partners change the lives of their partners. In fact, these pups start changing lives even before they are ever placed into service. They touch the hearts of prisoners at the Topeka Correctional Facility and the children and adults they meet at schools and community functions during socialization activities. These dogs go on to impress upon the trainers and other KSDS staff how important their work is in preparing these four-legged partners. And, then there are the volunteers including puppy raisers who have loved these babies and turned them back in with the hope that they will become the forever partner for that special graduate. If you have ever attended a graduation, you know that your heart and life will never be the same. It is truly a blessing that I have received the opportunity to serve as Co-CEO along with Glenda Keller.”

Randy Teske from Pratt, KS knows a thing or two about what KSDS has to offer through its canine training programs. You see Randy and his guide dog, Marco, graduated in October of 2014 and he’s been sharing his awesome story about trainer Deb Tegethoff and his wonderful canine partner ever since.

While attending a Prairie Independent Living gathering in Hutchinson, Randy met Bob Lucus and his guide dog Indigo. Bob was excited about what his dog could do to help him be more independent. Randy said, “Prove it to me…” and after observing this partnership Randy said, “Sign me up!”

Randy and his wife Susan have proven to be outstanding representatives for KSDS by sharing his story with various civic groups such as Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, PEO Groups, a Pilot Club as well as library and school groups. When asked what he most wanted to share with others about KSDS, Randy stated that it’s critical that people contribute to the financial stability of this organization so that more dogs can be placed with those who need these special dogs. And we need more puppy raisers, “puppy raisers are just Angels.”

Because of his personal experiences and his dedication to KSDS, the logical next step was for him to join the KSDS Board of Directors on January 2016. His leadership and insight into disability awareness makes him a perfect fit. Welcome Randy to the Board and thank you for sharing your time…your energy…and your wisdom with the KSDS family.

2015 Kansas State Fair RecapWe would like to give a special thank you to Larry and Joan Doskocil for providing lodging for the first year of the Kansas State Fair. This generous offer allowed KSDS to lessen the financial burden of the First Kansas State Fair show. We also would like to thank an anonymous donor for donating gate tickets. Thank you to an anonymous donor for paying the rental fee to store the exhibit at the Fairgrounds for a year. We would also like to thank Connie Johnson with the City of Hutchinson for airing KSDS information on the Hutchinson Welcome Channel over the year. We are humbled at the hundreds of hours that the KSDS family donated and all the hours the KSDS staff were away from home to make the Fair a truly tremendous event. We would like to thank the many non-KSDS anonymous persons who helped with the building of the booth.

suMMer 2015 Graduates

aleX o’BrieNROMEO - SERVICEAlex O’Brien, of Lawrence, KS, came to KSDS in the summer of 2015, to receive his service dog, Romeo, a black Labrador. Alex wrote the following at his graduation at KSDS:

I am 19 years old and live in Lawrence, KS. I have been using a wheelchair full time for 10 years. I am a student at KU studying aerospace engineering, and I will be starting my sophomore year this fall. My service dog’s name is Romeo and he is a male lab. Romeo can help me pick up things off the floor that I drop, carry them and give them to me. He can also tug open the refrigerator and retrieve items out of it, tug my foot onto my foot rest, push door buttons and turn on lights.

My time at KSDS with my new lifelong partner, Romeo, has been a challeng-ing learning experience. At times it’s been stressful, especially when Romeo was being stubborn and not obeying my commands. With enough persistence and patience, I was able to get Romeo to do what I commanded. There will be challenging and stressful moments dur-ing the next few months but I am confi-dent we will make a great team. Even though a partnership with a service dog will be challenging, it is well worth it for the increased independence that comes with having Romeo by my side.

I would like to give a big thank you to all of the staff at KSDS who cared for and trained Romeo. I also want to thank Sarah Williams who raised Ro-meo to be the great dog that he is!

Romeo’s puppy raiser is Sarah Williams and family from Mason City, IA.

Brett KroeKerJET - guIdEBrett Kroeker of Overland Park, KSreceived his successor dog Jet after go-ing several years without a guide dog. After retiring his first partner, Werthers, Brett was not ready to get another dog until a few months ago.

This team trained in their hometown where there is a blending of nationali-ties, young families and lots of sports, including the KC Royals and the KC Chiefs. During their training, the team learned the routes to restaurants, shop-ping areas and the Blue Valley School District where Brett works.

When asked about his experience during training, Brett was amazed at how quickly Jet learned his routes and bonded with him. This team is looking forward to becoming more involved with the community and meeting new people.

Carlin Smith and family from Topeka, KS were Jet’s puppy raisers.

Note: All KSDS graduates receive free Science Diet food for their canine partner from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and Heartgard and Frontline are donated by Merial.

Jill leWisBISSELL - faCILITyJill Lewis from Mulvane, KS attended facility dog class at KSDS in March, 2015 and met her new partner, Bissell, a yellow Labrador from the Vacuum litter.

As a teacher at Oaklawn Elementary School, Jill teaches dyslexic students, is a literacy coach, and works in teachers’ classrooms during reading to help strug-gling students. Bissell will go with Jill into these classrooms. Bissell’s job will be to sit with students, calm them, let them stroke his fur and provide an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Bissell will also provide a calm, sooth-ing environment for the adults who have already said they will be visiting her room for some “doggie lovin.”

Jill says, “My dog, Bissell, is amaz-ing. What captivated my heart is the character of every staff member at KSDS. Every person I encountered is a true servant and has a genuine heart for dogs and the people they serve. I truly believe each of them have been called by God to make a difference in the lives of the people they touch. This group of professionals is truly a family and shares a common bond like none I’ve ever seen before. They have taken me into their family and blessed me beyond measure. I’ve told my friends how overwhelming it is to be handed the keys to a $25,000 dog; room and board for 6 days; one-on-one training; and a new family free of cost to me. How do I EVER pay back a blessing like that?

Bissell’s puppy raiser is Jerilynn Bay-less of Terre Haute, IN.

Joyce BroWNPERu - SERVICEJoyce Brown, of Topeka, KS, attended fall class at KSDS to receive her service dog, Peru, a yellow Labrador. Joyce has lived in Topeka for nine years.

Joyce knows that with Peru’s help, she will be more active and independent in Topeka. Joyce says, “All places are more accessi-ble when you have a service dog. It’s like having a portable handrail and a third hand when he carries objects for me.”

Peru is a successor dog for Joyce.

Joyce chose KSDS because it was recom-mended to her by a friend, and the fact that KSDS is a fully accredited member of As-sistance Dogs International, and she likes the community of Washington.

Joyce has more accessibility and confi-dence with Peru’s help. Peru helps Joyce with balance and says people are friendlier because they are curious about Peru and how he helps her.

Joyce describes her experience in Wash-ington as wonderful, peaceful, with quiet surroundings. “It was truly amazing that not only the KSDS employees, volunteers, and supporters are so helpful, but the entire community treated us as long-time friends.”

Peru’s puppy raiser is Susan Jones, of Gore, OK.

MarJorie fosterCHELSEa - SERVICEMarjorie Foster, of Wellington, KS, returned to KSDS this past fall to receive her third service dog, Chelsea, a black Labrador. Marjorie doesn’t let her medical issues control where she goes or what she does. She’s been told by several people that she wears them out! Chelsea helps Marjorie manage her daily tasks. “Chelsea will inspire me to do my best every day,” says Marjorie. She stated that “Chelsea has put breath back into her heart and she is not alone. She has someone beside her. The love our dogs give us is impossible to tell others about who have never walked through life as a team.”

Marjorie says she has watched great changes being made at KSDS; not just the great accessible apartment, but WOW…the meals provided by the local churches and organizations were wonderful!

Marjorie says her goals are to fine tune the commands they have learned during the KSDS classes, build the strongest bond together as a positive team, and show Chelsea she is loved.

Marjorie described her experience at KSDS as wonderful. She is touched by the caring and compassion of all the staff at KSDS and the community of Washing-ton. I feel very lucky to be a part of the KSDS family for over 19 years.

Without the puppy raisers, this would not be possible. You love them; you teach them; and then give them back. I couldn’t do what you do. You have helped me live alone and helped me maintain my inde-pendence.

Chelsea’s puppy raisers are Jeanne Meyer and Keith Chrostowski of Parkville, MO.

Melissa KoPfHudSON - SERVICEMelissa Kopf, from Topeka, KS came to KSDS to meet her new canine partner, Hudson, a black Labrador. This was a new experience for her as Hudson was her first assistance dog.

Melissa looks forward to being more ac-tive and continuing her job with the help of Hudson. Melissa is a social worker at Kansas Children’s Service League, and she hopes to obtain her clinical license to provide therapy.

Melissa feels that having a service dog will allow her to advocate for people with disabilities, to do programs and promote KSDS.

Hudson will be opening doors and retriev-ing items for Melissa along with helping Melissa become more independent and active. She chose KSDS because it is ADI accredited and located close to her home.

Melissa’s desire to have a service dog was initially about preserving her indepen-dence, but has now become every bit as much about her dog. She knows that she and Hudson are a team and her love and compassion for him grows more as they develop as a partnership. Melissa believes Hudson was chosen for her because he loves to retrieve and is always looking for something to pick up.

“The staff at KSDS is really passionate about what they are doing. They live out their mission. During my training, they’ve worked long days and were available anytime I needed something or had a ques-tion. I have great respect for that and I would have no concerns referring others to them,” says Melissa.

Hudson was raised by Bob and Sandy Bartkoski of Seneca, KS.

Jessica seilerJaMaICa - faCILITyJessica Seiler is a high school counselor from Andale, KS. Jessica attended Facil-ity class late summer of 2015 and received her dog, Jamaica, a yellow Labrador. Jessica first learned about KSDS online and graduated with her first dog, Poppy. Poppy is now retired, and Jamaica has stepped in to assist Jessica.

Jessica is using Jamaica in the counseling department at Eisenhower High School in Goddard, KS. Jamaica will be used in group and individual counseling as well as classroom guidance. Jamaica is used daily helping students that struggle with anxiety and depression. There are over 900 stu-dents in this building.

Jessica speaks of her experience at KSDS and says, “KSDS has been wonderful from the very beginning of this process! KSDS continues to give the gift of independence and companionship with every single dog that is placed. KSDS really is changing lives! Jamaica and I are high energy and we both love children. She and I are the most loyal buddies you will ever meet.”

Jessica says Letha Nelson, Facility trainer, has been so kind, loving and attentive from the beginning and she is perfect for her job!

The name of Jamaica’s volunteer puppy raiser is Dr. Yolanda Gray-Furman of Fort Scott, KS.

elaiNe WatsoNKINg - guIdEElaine Watson was excited to meet her new guide dog, a golden retriever named King. Elaine loves grooming King and he loves her beautiful fenced in backyard.

During this team’s training in Hays, KS they worked on routes to the eye doc-tor and medical doctor that are both near Elaine’s home. They worked at Walmart, restaurants, church, Orschelins and learned how to ride the public transportation bus to go to the Senior Center for lunch. The team was a big hit at all of these places.

The team traveled to Washington for the last few days of training to work in an area outside of their comfort zone. Attend-ing graduation and meeting King’s puppy raiser Jenna Reid of Salina, KS rounded out their training time.

Elaine’s goals are to bond well with King, learn all of the many commands and to be firm when needed.

ryaN viceKJESTER - SERVICERyan Vicek from Louisburg, KS attended fall classes at KSDS and received his new partner, Jester, a golden retriever. Ryan’s first service dog was Breyer from the Ice Cream litter.

Ryan graduated from Kansas University with a degree in business administration and finance. He is presently an adminis-trative assistant and financial officer for an abuse outpatient center.

Ryan’s life changed the most when he received a service dog and had to become more focused on his dog than on himself. This helped Ryan to be responsible for another living thing who depended on him.

Jester gives Ryan more energy and free-dom to do his job thus making him more efficient. Jester will increase Ryan’s social life as everywhere he goes people want to talk to him about his new partner. Ryan knows that having Jester by his side will make him feel safe and less exhausted.

Jester pulls Ryan’s wheelchair up ramps, braces his chair as he transfers, and retrieves items out of reach. They are developing a loving, caring, and trusting bond with each other.

Ryan selected KSDS because he received Breyer from them, because KSDS is local and because the trainers do a great job of training. They are his family and have been for 11 years.

Ryan says, “Jester is a very loving, compassionate, and amazing service dog. He already performs above and beyond my expectations. Words really cannot describe the experience and my feeling of appreciation for Annette.”

Jester’s puppy raisers are Elizabeth and GiGi Mireault, of Olive, IA.

JeNNifer PriNGlePRINCE- SERVICEJennifer Pringle from Brandon, FL returned to KSDS to receive her third successor dog. Jennifer was greeted by her new partner, Prince, a golden retriever. Jennifer knows that Prince will give her more energy by pulling her wheelchair and retrieving dropped items.

Jennifer and her husband Jeff learned about KSDS in 1997, and they both ob-tained assistance dogs. They both stated, “KSDS is the best choice we ever made.” Jennifer found through her first assistance dog that she could gain some lifelong friends and that not everyone judges her because of her disabilities.

Jennifer works for United Parcel Service where she is a customer service represen-tative. Prince will make her job easier because she will have more energy. Prince will help her navigate in the large build-ing where she works. Jennifer’s future goals are to be as active as possible and to go more with her husband and his dog, McLaren.

Jennifer states, “KSDS has been like fam-ily. I have wonderful friends in graduates and puppy raisers I’ve met, and of course, Annette is the best! Prince is sweet, gentle, and loving. He helped make one of the worst days of my life more bearable. While in training with Prince, I found out my retired KSDS service dog, Dankin, passed away. I couldn’t be there with him, but Prince let me cry into his fur, kept giving me his paw, and let me cuddle him on his blanket until I actually fell asleep. Prince was telling me, “It’s OK Mom, we got this.”

KSDS has been wonderful, and I espe-cially appreciate Annette for allowing me to work one-on-one with her.

Prince’s puppy raiser is Ed Wierman, of Chicago, IL.

MicHelle BluNcKLaddy - faCILITyMichele Blunck, Wichita, KS, is a Victim Assistance Unit Coordinator with the Wichita Police Department. Michele at-tended summer class at KSDS to receive her facility dog, Laddy, a yellow Labrador.

Michele believes Laddy will be a huge benefit in her work. She say, “Not only will Laddy be a benefit to my clients, victims of violent crimes, but also for the detectives faced with working these crimes day in and day out. Laddy will give comfort to those unable to voice their pain and courage when attending court. Laddy will provide strength and will be the oasis in our desert. He will provide comfort without judgement.”

Laddy is the first Courthouse Facility dog placed by KSDS. Michele stated, “We will be able to connect with victims that previously were not connected by human means. I believe God placed this type of team in my heart, and I am very excited that we will be the first “Dream Team” in Kansas.

Michele speaks of her experiences at KSDS and stated, “This has been a won-derful, intense, and awesome week. I have learned so much and Letha has given me such insight. I cannot wait to put what I learned into practice! Letha has been phe-nomenal with the training and the encour-agement. I appreciate her so much!”

“I can only image how healing Laddy will be for those who have been traumatized. Thank you, thank you!”

Laddy’s volunteer puppy raisers are Gina and Carl German of Peck, KS.

Joshua Ryan of Goldsby, OK, returned to KSDS this summer to receive his suc-cessor service dog, Jayhawk, a black Labrador. Joshua notes that people seem to be more courteous to both he and Jayhawk, than when it is only Joshua in a wheelchair. Joshua knows he will navi-gate easier with Jayhawk with him. He plans to have Jayhawk pick up items and bring things to him. Jayhawk will travel to work with Joshua where he is the City Clerk for the community of Goldsby.

Joshua picked KSDS because of their accreditation with ADI, its close location to his community, and because of the recommendation of the rehab hospital in Oklahoma City, OK. There was infor-mational material and someone there to demonstrate a dog.

Joshua says, “My life has changed the most through a partnership with Jayhawk because of the companionship. We laugh and play together daily. Jayhawk gives me purpose. I continue the training done at KSDS and must say I’m very happy with the training KSDS has done. These dogs are the BEST. I feel much more secure in my home and in public with a service dog.

Joshua found the “new” apartments to be fantastic. He also spoke of his trainer, Annette Metz, “Annette saw a side of me that had been “lost” since my accident. I have always used humor to be the life of the party. This time she matched me with a very energetic two year old male! I think it is best summed up as two ornery males trying to outdo one another. Only good things come from KSDS. I cer-tainly have and will continue to spread the word about this experience, this place, and this staff.”

Jayhawk’s puppy raiser is Mandi Holsten, of Kansas City, KS.

2016 Grad retreatSixteen graduate teams with family and caregiv-ers attended the 2016 Graduate Retreat. Three teams were recertified and everyone brushed up on skills and obedience. Once again Kan-sas weather provided a variety of changes for us to work on. Ninety plus degrees, wind, and rain kept everyone on their toes. Everyone was excited to visit with old friends and meet new ones. The dogs all worked well around each other, strangers, food, and toys. Playtime at the six-plex was enjoyed by all in the evenings.

A big thank you to Carla McGuire and her sis-ter Derry McGuire, from Iowa and Gina Ger-man, from Peck, KS who provided the food and cooked delicious breakfasts and lunches for ev-eryone at the 2015 and 2016 Grad Retreats!

RecertificationEvery 5 years graduate teams are asked to recertify their partnership. They must show that they are still using their dog’s skill tasks correctly and pass the ADI public access test. The team is then issued a new ID card to verify that they have passed all of their requirements to be a successful and safe working team. Most teams take their recertification test during Grad retreat but are invited to do this at any other time during the year.

KSDS has opportunities every year to be on campus at Kansas State University for various events. K-State School of Veterinary Medicine performs the hip and eye tests for KSDS puppies-in-training.

On April 9th, some KSDS staff, puppy raisers, and oth-ers in the Manhattan area attended the 21st annual Dog N Jog, hosted by Kansas State University College of Veteri-

nary Medicine Class of 2017. Anyone may participate by bringing your dog and running, jogging, or walking the course. Prizes are given for the top 3 male and female category finishers, largest dog, smallest dog, and oldest dog and human, and youngest dog and hu-man. There is also a silent auction. It is fun for everyone there, even the dogs! Proceeds benefit KSDS. Our thanks to K-State Veterinary Medicine Class of 2017 for hosting this fundraiser!

KSDS had a display at K-State Open House on April 16th at the Kansas State Veterinary department. KSDS had a litter born on January 22, 2008, at K-State. The puppies were named after Kansas State. Danny Ayres, a KSDS service graduate, has Willie, a golden retriever, from this litter. Danny enjoyed a tour of the veterinary department at K-State, thanks to Kristen Linder, a member of the KSU CVM class of 2018, and a KSDS volunteer.

In early June at 4-H Discovery Days, KSDS staff, puppy raisers and dogs showed 4-H members how as-sistance dogs work and emphasized how important our puppy raisers are to the organization.

2016 KSdSHope, faith, love, and -- yes, at moments -- even despair: Puppy raisers experience these emotions and many more as they start an eight-week-old pup on its journey to a special life of service.

So ``Circle of Life’’ became the theme for this year’s Pups Days, a weekend-long re-treat of learning, training and fun open to all puppy raisers. More than 30 people attended the event April 15-17 at KSDS.

Learning sessions explored a pup’s life from the very beginning all the way to a life of assistance and then retirement.

Some of the steps in exploring that lifejourney: • A presentation was given on the com-

plexities of breeding and early puppy development.

• Two graduates spoke eloquently about the impact their dogs have had in their lives and in the lives of others. Thank you to service graduate Ryan Vicek and facil-ity graduate Jill Lewis for sharing their stories.

``From the day we arrive on the planet,And, blinking, step into the sun,There’s more to see than can ever be seen, More to do than can ever be done....

``It’s the circle of life And it moves us all,Through despair and hope, Through faith and love....’’ (From ``Circle of Life’’ in The Lion King)

• Trainers described how women at the Topeka Correctional Facility give their time and hearts to train puppies, and read aloud touching letters from the women. They teach adult dogs specific skills, but also raise some from puppyhood.

• A session offered information on puppy turn-in day, how a returned dog is tested for temperament and physical health, and what to expect from that evaluation process.

• Trainers also offered one-on-one sessions with puppy raisers who wanted expert advice on solving a training problem or improving their skills with their pups, and led group sessions in how to train and socialize pups. They also guided puppy raisers in using tools and equip-ment to give a sense of what it’s like to work with a dog when a disability presents challenges.

Learning was the main focus of Pups Days, but fun wasn’t far behind! From a casual Friday night pizza party where dogs could play in Banner Park to a clever Canine Quiz Show to a fun, fast-paced live auction and the traditional silent auction and raffle, fun was woven into the weekend. (As was food: Thank you, Kansas Flippers, for another great pancake breakfast!)

Faith, too, played its part. At a Blessing of the Dogs ceremony Sunday morning, thanks were given for these wonderful canines -- and for all the human hearts and hands that work together to guide them to help change lives.

Thank you to all the puppy raisers from KSDS!

Our puppy raisers come from all walks and all ages of life. It takes a lot of pas-sion, desire and commitment to raise one of KSDS’ adorable puppies into a suc-cessful assistance dog. For our teen puppy raisers (13+), puppy raising can be a great way to give back to the community. Puppy raising for these young scholars can turn into a wonderful 4-H, Boy Scout, Girl Scout or FFA project. What better way to socialize our young puppies than by taking them to events sponsored by these organizations!

Puppy raising is not just for high school students with supportive families, howev-er, puppy raisers under the age of 18 must have written parental consent.

Kennel clubs have classes, members and facilties to help provide the perfect envi-ronment to expose puppies to other dogs and people. If you are a member of any of these organizations and would like a pre-sentation about KSDS, please contact us at ([email protected]) or (785) 325-2256.

Service dogs are trained to provide assistance to people with physical disabilities, from individu-als who use wheelchairs for mobility to those requiring a steady four-legged partner to bal-ance them as they walk.

Some of the skills KSDS service dogs are trained to do include retrieving dropped or se-lected items, pulling wheelchairs, bracing for balance or transfers, assisting in undressing, turning lights on, and opening and closing a va-riety of doors.

A $25 non-refundable application fee is re-quired to start the process of approval. There is an extensive application process requiring basic information, medical information and referenc-es from the applicant. A video of the applicant’s life and assistance needs is required along with an interview for approval. If approved, there are no other costs to the applicant.

KSDS is able to provide not only the dog, but the extensive hours of training, a collar, leash and harness at no cost to the applicant due to the generosity of the people who donate to KSDS. The Lions Clubs of Kansas have set up a schol-arship fund that pays for the student’s room and board while attending class. Dog food is fur-nished for the life of the dog by Hill’s Pet Nutri-tion. Ownership of the dog is given after one year of successful team work.

We welcome Veterans but at this time we do not have the personnel to train and place PTSD, Sei-zure Alert, Diabetic Alert or Hearing Dogs.

All KSDS dogs must meet the requirements of the Assistance Dogs International (ADI) Stan-dards and Ethics. There is a minimum of 120 hours of intense training in every KSDS dog placed with a partner.

For more information or questions, contact Le-tha Nelson, Client Services at (785) 325-2256 ext. 115 or ([email protected]).

KSDS guide dogs help their partner get safely from one place to another and are trained to locate curbs and stairs, to cross streets safely, to show change of ground texture (i.e. sidewalk to gravel) and to avoid obstacles and overhanging objects. The guide dog knows “left” and “right” and can help their partner with many “find” commands (the table, the chair, the door in/out, the counter, etc.)

Just What are Facility Dogs?

“My Facility Dog brings smiles to school every day, and attendance has improved.” “Needing a friend, the student dropped to his knees and cried into the dog’s fur.” The facility dog is partnered with a working professional facilitator and is skilled at main-taining a calm manner and good social behavior in a variety of environments. They are accus-tomed to interacting with many different types of people, including those with physical and/or developmental disabilities. They may work in schools, physical therapy clinics, nursing homes, counselor offices, children’s advocacy centers, or courthouses.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Vocally, dogs can’t tell us that they would like to be part of a service, guide, or facility team. The KSDS trainers let the dog tell them by way of its personality, temperament, and desire to do the job where its strengths lie. Their health may get in the way due to possible hip dysplasia, cata-racts, or allergies. They may make it clear that they would just rather be a pet, or an older dog may need a home upon retiring from its working life. The dog’s volunteer puppy raiser is called first, offering it back into their home as a pet. If they are unable to take the dog, KSDS staff refers to its Career Change applications. Each application is reviewed, and we match the dog with the lifestyle and personality of their for-ever family. There is no charge for our Career Change dogs but donations will be welcomed.

Puppy raisers...envelope stuffers... high schoolers...oh my! These KSDS volunteers from Washington County come in all different shapes and styles. From the little ones that play with puppies after school to the K-state students and other adults that spend their afternoons around the campus, KSDS would like to thank all who volunteer their time. Whether it is stuffing countless envelopes or clearing sidewalks in the summer heat so wheelchairs can travel safely, we would not be able to continue working towards our goal if it weren’t for the dedicated volun-teers that help KSDS. first courtHouse PlaceMeNtKSDS is proud to announce the placement of our first courthouse facil-ity dog!

Laddy, a two year old yellow lab, along with his new handler, Michele Blunck, graduated from KSDS on June 18th, 2016. Michele is a Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Wichita Police Department. Laddy will accompany Michele to work every day to provide comfort and support to victims of crime. Laddy is the first courthouse facility dog in the state of Kansas from an Assistance Dogs International accredited organiza-tion.

A program was adopted several years ago at KSDS to give people an opportunity to honor their de-ceased dog by donating to KSDS through the “Cheers to Careers” program. For a donation of $100 or more, a memorial inscription of up to fifteen words are inscribed on a brass plate and affixed to a plaque in the west training building at KSDS, and you will also be recognized in the next Pathway newsletter. The brass plates are placed on wooden jigsaw puzzle pieces. Each piece has paw prints and footprints to signify the value of friendship in life’s journey.

Let your love grow by supporting KSDS and remember and honor your special companion. Honor them in a way that helps others through KSDS guide, service, or facility dog programs. “Grieve not, but speak of me as if I were beside you.”

eye care for aNiMals

During the month of May, Eye Care for Animals offered courtesy screen-ing eye exams to all assistance dogs and their partners for an ACVO spon-sored event. Drs. Sturgeon, Kaese and Hunkeler provided these exams to KSDS, Inc. graduate teams and puppy raisers at the Eye Care for Animals offices located in the Kansas City area (Overland Park, Lee’s Summit, and Mission) and also in Wichita. These screening exams gave KSDS, Inc. teams peace of mind in knowing that their dog’s vision is in need of monitoring versus healthy.

Here is an example of something found on an exam:KSDS, Inc. (retired) Service Dog team Shelly Shetley and Boo. Shelly noted that Boo was having concerns with her retrieving skills and possibly losing vision. Shelly had met Mandi Holsten at a KSDS, Inc. monthly function, and Mandi informed Shelly of the Eye Care for Animals cour-tesy screening exams for assistance dogs. Dr. Kaese met with the team and diagnosed Boo with progressive retinal degeneration on her screening exam. Dr. Kaese scheduled Boo to be monitored for future complications from the progression of the disease. Boo was eventually retired and a suc-cessor dog named Jewel was placed with Shelly. Without this screening exam, Boo may have never been diagnosed.

This year multiple graduate teams were screened at the Eye Care for An-imals event in May, thanks to the coordination efforts of puppy raiser, Mandi Holsten. Thank you for helping these teams get their FREE eye exams!

STATE OF KANSAS & MISSOURI -- If you work for the State of Kansas, you may contrib-ute to KSDS through the CHC website at: www.ksmo.healthcharities.org or phone (913) 831-7002.

ONLINE GIVING – making a donation through the www.ksds.org website is safe, fast and easy. When we receive your donation, we’ll send an acknowledgement via mail for tax pur-poses. We accept all major credit cards. Please note: we use a nonprofit service to process our credit card transactions. LOC IND CH ORG is the name that will appear on your statement, not KSDS.

Reach out your hand and help someone receive an assistance dog by giving at your workplace. Four paws, two hearts, one MIRACLE!

The Combined Federal Campaign helps sup-port over 2,000 non-profit agencies providing opportunities to improve the quality of life of individuals. KSDS qualifies to participate in this campaign throughout the United States, by using CFC #10823. Federal employees may ob-tain the pledge forms at their place of employ-ment. Federal Employees may pledge through payroll deduction or make a one-time cash or check donation.

Retirees and contractors are not directly solic-ited, but may make one-time cash or check do-nations.

Electronic pledging is available either through Employee Express, CFC Nexus or myPay.

Your workplace can help place an assistance dog team at KSDS through the support of a workplace, i.e. employee giving, corporate con-tribution, volunteering, and/or employee work-place giving program. A donation may be made monthly by simply signing an ACH form (in-cluded in this newsletter), or have your human resource department contact Marcia Funke, Development Director, at 785-325-2256, ext. #104, or ([email protected]) with any ques-tions.

Thank You!!

ACH Form

Remittance Envelope

Isn’t it nice to know your monthly income so you know your spending allowance? KSDS likes that too!

Saving up a little bit at a time for that planned purchase never hurts as bad as coming up with all the money all at once, either. Would you consider donating to KSDS a small amount each month that wouldn’t make a big change in your lifestyle? Five or ten dollars will not usually be missed in our day to day spending habits. By choosing to donate monthly to KSDS, you will make a huge impact on KSDS’ monthly sustainability.

KSDS is reaching out to its friends to see if you would be willing to set up an ongoing ACH (automated clearing house) entry from your checking or savings account to fund your tax deductible donation to KSDS. You simply fill out the form, provide us with the amount and a voided check. KSDS will take care of the rest. We have many donors that have already chosen to do this rather than give one lump sum in the year. ACH payments are an efficient and cost-reducing alternative to a paper check and postage. A debit or credit card will incur a fee as opposed to no fee for this ACH transaction. These sustaining donations enable KSDS to plan better to meet budget, income and expenses throughout the year.

We wish to thank you in advance for your contribution!

Just fill out the other side of this page. Attach a voided check that has your bank routing number and account number in order to set up your ACH automated donation to KSDS and place it in the remittance envelope. KSDS will take care of the rest. This saves you time and money. Your donation to KSDS will be deducted on approxi-mately the 5th of each month. KSDS will provide you with a receipt at calendar year end for tax purposes.

iNterN at KsdsKristi Myers was born and raised in the Rose Hill/Derby, Kansas area. She graduated from Rose Hill High School in 2005 and also graduated from Butler County Community College with a Business degree. Kristi has always had a love for animals and the desire and passion to help people since she was a young girl. This led Kristi into the career path of dog training and wanting to specialize in service dog training. Kristi is extremely grateful for her 5 week long internship at KSDS. Beginning September 1st, Kristi will move into a full-time position with KSDS as the Canine Housing Unit (CHU) Coordinator. Welcome to the KSDS family!

Assistance Dogs International (ADI) is a coalition of not for profit assistance dog organizations. The purpose of ADI is to improve the areas of training, placement, and utilization of assistance dogs, staff and volunteer education, as well as educating the public about as-

sistance dogs, and advocating for the legal rights of people with disabilities partnered with assistance dogs. ADI has a comprehensive accreditation system and members have to be regu-larly assessed to ensure they meet the

high standards expected of assistance dog programs.

KSDS has been an accredited member of ADI since 2003 and has gone through two accreditation reviews and is a mem-ber in good standing.
