Plan a Vacation in Orlando

by Jennifer Dowell

Directions for Teacher

This math project is a way for students to plan a vacation using a budget sheet. All of the prices listed are accurate as of 2014. The city includes a page with:

• Name of the City• Flight Arrangements• Hotel Options• Activity Menu

The city will have Rental Car options, Food options, the Plan Your Dream Vacation page, and Budget Sheet. Have the students use the budget sheet to plan a vacation for themselves and a guest. They have a budget of $2,5oo and can not go over. I would have them try to get as close to $2,5ooo as possible. There is an example of the budget sheet attached.

Ways to do the activity

This activity can be done many ways. It can be done in groups, pairs, individually, as a whole class, or in math stations. You can give a group of 3-4 students the city and have them work together. You can make many copies and have each student do the city on their own. You can put it in a math station.

I did this activity with a group of 4-5 students. I gave each student a job.

-recorder- person who writes on the budget sheet-mathmematician- calculates the math on a sheet of paper-checker- checks to make sure the math is calculated correctly-leader- tells the recorder what to write-helper- anything else that is neededIt really helped with the classroom discipline for everyone to have a job.
