PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Congratulations to our newly elected 2015 School Captains, Nathan Aliotta, Grace McCoy, Alex Smith, and Liani Hedge who were chosen from a very strong field of applicants. Although they have big shoes to fill I am sure they will be outstanding representatives of our college. Nathan Aliotta Grace McCoy Alex Smith Liani Hedge

Recently we asked how we could communicate better with our parents and our school community. As a result of feedback we received, we are trialling a new App ‘Tiqbiz’ which will send notifications out to the school community between now and the end of year. While Tiqbiz does much more than this we will begin by just sending out messages. If you have children at Berwick Primary School you will be familiar with the App, and need only to add us to the list. If not, the instructions are listed below. In order for this to work, we need as many parents as possible to have the App and to let us know what you think. If all goes well we will implement Tiqbiz fully in 2015. My thanks to those who contributed their suggestions and helped us towards this outcome. Tiqbiz will supplement our other forms of communication with parents, School Council, staff and students. To get Tiqbiz onto your phone or ipad, go to the App store, and search for and download Tiqbiz. Open Tiqbiz and register/log-in. Click ‘Find boxes’ and search Schools, Secondary to find Berwick College. Select us from the results. Tick the grey boxes that apply to you, when the box turns green, you’re connected. Click on the Inbox icon and you will receive our instant messages.

Berwick College has been promised $1,000,000.00 for a new Wellbeing Centre, which will incorporate a sickbay with toilet and shower and rooms for counselling, both privately and for small group discussion. This will be a major asset for the College and the community. As we have a number of shared facilities we are in the perfect position for a resource that serves us and the community.

All exams have now finished. The smooth execution of these organisational challenges is a credit to Senior School Coordinator Ms Rachel Edwards and the Senior School staff, along with the students and their teachers.

Headstart has now begun, and our students are working solidly, ensuring they make the most of their learning time at school. The 2015 Year 8s, Year 9s and Year 10s will complete 4 weeks, Year 11s 3 weeks and Year 12s 2 weeks.

Our Indonesian Night Market was an array of delectable dishes and fundraising celebrating our Asian program. Well done to our Indonesian chefs, teachers and students.

Last Saturday we had our first session of languages education as a host of the VSL (Victorian School of Languages). The languages offered at this time are Spanish, Mandarin and Hindi. The language school hopes to expand in this area.

Our Year 7 and Year 8 boys’ basketball teams competed at State Level this week, both teams achieving a remarkable third in State, the Year 7s only 5 points down. Well done to Mr Chris Pentland, Mr Gerard Leonard and our basketball academy students.

The Musical Performance night on Wednesday night was a wonderful example of some of the talent we have here at Berwick. Congratulations to all who participated, and to our wonderful teachers, Mr Michael Couche, Ms Mandy Brown, Mr Kenton Smith and Mr Bob Wijnschenk.

The 10 and 20 year reunions were held recently. Both were very well attended and speak volumes about the regard in which Berwick College is held. There was a more low-key 25 year reunion recently as well. It was wonderful to hear some of the journeys our ex-students have undertaken since leaving our college.

Although it is close to the end of the year, there are many events still happening. Our World Challenge teams depart on the 26th November, the Bloodbank will be here on the 28th November. The Year 8 Basketball tour to Canberra leaves on Monday 1st December, reports will be issued on 11th December and the excursion to the Geelong Water Park is on the 12th December. Presentation Night is on 16th December. In no time at all, we will be finished!

These students will have the opportunity to redeem their results by undertaking a Redemption Program during the Headstart Program. The program will provide students with the opportunity to prove they are capable of advancing to the next year level with the real potential for success. During this program students will be under direct supervision of the Principal class and will be required to work independently.

Students are required to satisfactorily complete the program in order to be considered for advancement to the next year level. This will include:

Complete all set work

YEAR 11 VCAL FUNDRAISER PROJECT

The major community project for Year 11 VCAL students has been to raise funds to enable the purchase of special-ly designed swags for the homeless. The aim was to raise money to enable the VCAL class to purchase these swags to donate to the Cornerstone Mission based in Dandenong.

As part of the project students have had a visit from Cornerstone to highlight the issue of homelessness in Mel-bourne’s southeast. They have also had a presentation by ‘The Big Issue” in the city which included a first hand account of a homeless persons experiences.

More recently some of our students visited Cornerstone to meet some homeless people and chat to them about their experiences. This was an eye-opening experience for our students and enabled them to see first hand the clientele that may benefit from their use of the swags.

On Wednesday 29th October, thirty students slept out in the senior school building to raise funds. It was a fun night of games and laughter with not a lot of sleep occurring.

On Thursday 6th November the VCAL students put together a Staff versus Student football match along with a BBQ fundraiser. There was an exciting atmosphere on the athletics track as the staff donned their football jerseys in readiness to take on the Year 11 students. After much competition the staff was victorious by just one point.

Overall we are very proud of the efforts of the Year 11 VCAL students in organising these events. Their efforts have resulted in over $900 being raised. This will allow for the purchase of about 11 swags. We hope this experi-ence has allowed our students to better understand the needs of the less fortunate in our community and given them a perspective on the value of assisting others in the community.

UNIFORM 2015

At the beginning of 2014 a new uniform was introduced at Berwick College; the first time a major change had oc-curred in over 15 years. The feedback from the community has endorsed the new uniform and the comments we have received indicate it has made the students look smarter, well presented and reflects the values of the College.

With the introduction of the uniform, ambiguity arose over the intended purpose of the rugby top. Students have taken to wearing it as an item of everyday clothing, as opposed to being part of the P.E. uniform, as was intended.

From January 2015, the rugby top will not be allowed to be worn outside of a P.E. class, sports class or sports relat-ed excursions. Students found to be wearing it as part of their everyday attire will be asked to remove the top. We are providing this information at this early stage to ensure parents have time to purchase the correct uniform.

Noone Imagewear supply a Berwick College jumper as part of the uniform and this should be worn in place of the rugby top.

If you require any clarification, please contact Mr James Doble on 8768 1000.

Thank you for your support with this matter.

APPLIED LEARNING NEWS

During Head Start (17th

November – 12th

December) VET and Structured Work Place Learning will not be running.

Year 9 ALP students will have no classes on Tuesdays.

Year 10 PreCAL students will have no classes on Wednesday and Fridays

Year 11 and 12 VCAL students will have no classes on Wednesdays and Fridays.

In 2015 VET and Structured Work Placements will begin in February.

Applied Learning students have been working on a vegetable garden and chicken enclosure. The vegetable patches have been built and filled; lemon, lime, apple and orange trees have been planted. During Headstart, seedlings of various vegetables and herbs will be grown and early in 2015 our chickens will arrive, for fresh eggs daily.

This project gives the students practical work experience and team work opportunities. Produce will be used in classes or be sold for a gold coin donation to staff and students.

YEAR 11 VET SMALL BUSINESS

Our Cooking Activity

During the week of 27th October all three VET Small Business classes made pizza, truffles, sausage rolls and muffins.

For the past 2 or 3 weeks we have been learning the meaning of ‘quality’ within a business. This cooking activity was a great choice and gave us first hand experience in learning how to produce quality in food. In particular, we had to make each individual truffle the exact same size, they all had to have the same amount of coconut on them as well for them to taste like a good quality truffle.

Some groups concentrated on the task extremely well and had all truffles the same; one group, however, were unable to achieve the same size in their truffles, but regardless there was still quality in the taste!

YEAR 8 GIRLS HOCKEY

On Thursday 30th October the Year 8 girls played in the Southern Regional Finals to decide the team from our re-gion to go through to the state final of the Cricket.

The team consisting of Grace Phouthasenh, Emily Whitehead, Abbie Hoare, Tamsyn Pentland, Brooke Tetof, Tegan Langeveld, Courtney Farren, Brie O’Hagan, Leah Gartside, Carly Webber and Tahlia Petersen.

The girls played 3 games: The first against Minaret College winning by 32 runs. The next game was against Frankston, a highly skilled team with some of their players in the state team, and lost by only by 17 runs. The last game was against Casey Grammar in which we had a hard fought win by 18 runs.

This meant that Frankston went through to the State Final and we came runners up in the region. A great effort by the girls!

G’DAY USA - JANUARY 2016 SCHOOL HOLIDAY TOUR. The G’Day USA Program provides students currently in Years 7 to 11 with the opportunity to travel to the USA as part of a supervised group, with teachers acting as Group Leaders. The tour duration is just under 3 weeks.

Destinations include: Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott’s Berry Farm, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. A feature of the tour is that students spend 10 days living with an American host family, as well as visiting an American school.

The basic tour cost is currently $5,495, which includes airfares, transfers, accommodation, travel insurance, breakfasts and admissions to most attractions. Additional costs include government taxes and airline surcharges (approximately $795), some optional group tours which could include a San Francisco Bay cruise and a Hollywood day tour as well as other activities, some group meals, and tipping (between $300 to $500 for all optional activi-ties). Optional tours and costs are discussed with the group, and the actual activities and costs are decided by the group’s parents and students. You will also need to take some spending money for gifts and some meals. In the past students have taken anywhere between $500 and $1,000 as personal spending money.

If you are interested in being part of this tour please see Mr Goyen in room A6s for further information and a detailed brochure. The brochure includes a tear-off slip to register for a no-obligation information evening, where a representative from Educational World Travel will provide more details of the tour, as well as answer any ques-tions you may have.

THE PITCH WORLD ISSUE COMPETITION

Our students are some of the luckiest in the world. They have access to education, fresh food and clean water, medical care and they are free and safe to pursue their own inter-ests. Unfortunately, not all young people across the world have the same opportunities. For many young people life is a daily struggle just to survive and so we’ve give our stu-dents a mission to find a way to do something to help.

Students in the Year 7 iPad Program have been invited to enter ‘The Pitch’ competition. There are over $300 worth of iTunes vouchers in prizes to be won. Students choose from one of eight issues affecting world poverty today and then create a Fact Sheet, Strategic Plan and Pitch video. Each entry will be displayed on the Berwick College website and parents, students and friends will be invited to vote on the pitch they believe might best help contribute to re-solving world poverty.

Students can work as individuals or in groups, but each campaign must do three things: 1) raise awareness amongst Australian youth for their particular issue, 2) practically help to solve the issue, and 3) get other young Australians involved in contributing to the solution.

To join the competition, students join a group in Edmodo. All the details and instructions have already been distrib-uted to students inside the ‘Year 7 2014’ group in Edmodo on student iPads.

Why not encourage your Year 7 students to get involved?

WEP Student Exchange – A Once-In-Lifetime Opportunity!

Ever wondered what it would be like to live in another country and to swap your vegemite sandwich for a pop tart or croissant? Applications for WEP Student Exchange Programs to over 25 countries around the world are now open for programs starting from July 2015 onwards. Choose from more than 100 short and long-term programs, designed to fit into your Australian schooling. Find out more today! From Emily in France: France has been amazing so far! I love everything and even though there is still a huge language barrier I've slowly started to understand more and more. The Paris Orientation was beautiful and I was so shocked that we actually managed to cover a lot of places in such a short amount of time. The Australian and French schooling systems are definitely different from each other. All of my teachers are incredibly nice and understanding. I think in my first week I had a mini freak out because I couldn't understand one word but being able to easily participate in Math, English and Gym has definitely helped and reassured me. I've even done a few tests for different subjects and actually managed to answer parts of it. I've made quite a few friends, friends of my host sister and friends of my own. They've all been incredibly nice and try to speak English as well as French to me. Although I can't understand what they say half of the time it's still nice to hear them talk. I absolutely love my host family; they are nothing short of perfect! My host sisters are absolutely hilarious and my host parents are always trying to help me. The family has been very welcoming and they are trying to help me out all the time but they've also integrated me into their lives. We all went to Dijon last Saturday actually. Request Program Information Now Whether you wish to go overseas or host an exchange student in your home, request an information pack today to find out more about WEP’s not-for-profit student exchange programs.
