MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BCIHMCT), New Delhi, established in 1999 completes 21 years of providing admirable Hospitality education. Affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Delhi, the college is a NAAC “A” Accredited Institution and is approved by AICTE, MHRD, Govt of India. The Institute focuses on overall development of its students through updated training techniques, suitable methodologies, appropriate counseling and extracurricular activities. Other than theoretical and practical inputs students are exposed to innovative workshops, seminars, conferences, hospitality competitions, sports and extra classroom activities that groom them to be a perfect global hospitality professional. Semesters are action packed and students are assigned responsibilities of various committees and taskforce where they demonstrate their leadership skills and learn all other skills that help them in becoming a good human having good ethics and values. Teaching and Research are the two primary activities through which we fulfill our Mission and Objective. Our course curriculum is designed conforming to the current industry requirement. We continue to make final refinement and restructuring to our existing programme to provide our students with the opportunity for meaningful academic development of knowledge with respect to the environment. Our graduates are effective in technical, supportive knowledge, and soft skills. BCIHMCT has established itself as one of the leading Institutes in Hospitality Research and Education in India. The novel corona virus has wrecked all plans of stakeholders. These are unforeseen and trying times, and it seems, we must learn to live quite some time with the monster COVID-19, however with this new normal hospitality will come back to its old brilliance

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Established in 1999 under the aegis of Shri Banarsidas Chandiwala Sewa

Smarak Trust Society, a charitable Society working in the field of Health &

Education since 1952, with a view to provide quality education. BCIHMCT,

New Delhi is a young and progressive Hotel Management Institute and

prominent among Best Hotel Management Colleges in the country, created a

niche for itself as a source of competent managerial and technical manpower

for the hotel industry. The faculty and the students – share the vision and

mission of the Institute and are active partners in its implementation. The

Institute is accredited by NAAC, an autonomous body under UGC, as Quality

Situated in a balmy green environment near the business centre Nehru Place at

Kalkajiin New Delhi, BCIHMCT has the most modern campus & developed

infrastructure in India among all the Hotel Management Institutes. Modern

training restaurants with display bar counters, banquet hall, multi utility hall,

food production practical labs of contemporary design, lobby and front office with

latest software and other amenities form a part of the prestigious Institute.

Spacious air conditioned classrooms with facilities of latest teaching aids and

computer labs with leased line for internetutilization, up to date housekeeping

lab, automated library with a large collection of latest books, journals &

magazines justify the claim that the infrastructure of BCIHMCT is among the

best. The Chandiwala Estate has a state-of-the-art sports centre and a 240 seat

modern auditorium for student‟s all round development in different aspects of

the hospitality industry & two seminar halls. It also has a hospital and separate

hostels for boys &girls.

Pedagogy

Dedicated and research oriented faculty implements teaching-learning process at BCIHMCT through rigorous planning and keeping in view the industry needs. Students undergo classroom lectures, tutorials, case studies, assignments, seminars, workshops, conferences, hospitality software training and lectures from guest speakers from the industry and academia. To develop integrated knowledge of programming, students visit hotels for industrial exposure & are exposed to research projects on the topics related to syllabus as per the latest trends in technology. Students regularly participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities making them conscientious citizens.

Faculty

Highly qualified (Ph D), permanent & dedicated academic team with hospitality and management background at BCIHMCT consists of core as well as visiting/guest faculty from the industry. Besides the basic course curriculum, students are trained in communication skills, creative thinking and problem solving techniques while grooming them for better social interaction. CURRICULUM

Our curriculum is the cornerstone of what we consider to be our competitive

advantage over other institutions. The curriculum here has been dynamically

aligned to the needs and aspirations of the industry, to ensure that students not

just imbibe academic concepts but also develop the analytical and decision-making

skills, to be the leaders in this ever-changing world of business. Designed with

technical inputs from our partners, industry experts, extensive in-house research

and dialogue with key industry players, our courses uniquely integrate academic

rigor with practical application, to produce professionals who will not be just

effective managers, but also dynamic agents of change and innovation in the

hospitality and tourism industry.

To develop integrated knowledge of programming, students visit hotels for

Summer Training/Industrial Exposure for 10 weeks, Functional Exposure

Training for 20 weeks & are exposed to Research Projects in the final year on the

topics related to syllabus and latest trends in Industry.

Academic Partnership with Industry

A Joint Partnership MOU was signed between The Suryaa Hotel, New Delhi New Friends Colony and BCIHMCT for closer collaboration for Educational Excellence. Cooperation is in the field of Faculty Exposure, students training and visit of industry experts to conduct special sessions at BCIHMCT beside many other opportunities are being utilized for academic development.

The system of learning and practicing are endless and indeed inseparable. The best practices

deployed in hotels must find their way to the classrooms, making the HM students aware of

the emerging trends and the latest developments, thereby making them future-ready. The

systems and procedures in hotels change far more frequently than the HM curriculum,

thereby necessitating the need to work in close tandem with the hotels and the allied

trades.

Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering, in order to create a

designated industry partner with whom it would work hand-in-hand, recently signed

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Suryaa Hotel, New Delhi.

Mr Greesh Bindra Vice President Operations The Suryaa New Delhi along with his team of

eminent professionals including Ms. Esthereena Rajput, Training Manager and Ms Vani

Wadhwa, Marketing Head visited the institute to sign Memorandum of Understanding with

BCIHMCT, New Delhi.

Academic Partnership with Institutions

Today New Delhi Okhla during the 18th Chandiwala Hospitality Ensemble, 2019.

Event Management

Event management has become effective training methodology to acquire best

managerial practices and professional skills. BCIHMCT organizes National and

International events and has placed itself at the National Horizon in the field of

Hospitality and Tourism Education with benchmarking standards.

18th Chandiwala Hospitality Ensemble (16th -18th October, 2019):

The 18th edition of Chandiwala Hospitality Ensemble commenced with a grand inaugural

ceremony on 16th October 2019, with much enthusiasm at the campus with a record

presence of Hospitality Students, Industry Experts, Trade Media and Faculty Members.

The Lamp Lighting Ceremony was followed by a Curtain Raiser to mark the event open, in

the presence of Chief Guest - Mr. Ajay Sampige, General Manager, Novotel New Delhi

Aerocity; Mr. Srinivas Rao, Director Talent & Culture, Pullman Novotel New Delhi Aerocity;

Ms. Smriti Lamba, Learning & Development Manager, Pullman Novotel New Delhi Aerocity;

Chef Ajay Sood, Chef Consultant; Mr. PrabhjotBedi, CEO, Eclat Hospitality; Mr. R. K.

Bhandari, Principal BCIHMCT; Chef Prem Ram, Coordinator-CHE as well as Chef Ranojit

Kundu, Dy. Coordinator-CHE, along with other hospitality professionals, sponsors, trade

media, participating teams, students, faculty and staff members of the institute.

The various competitions held during the three day Mega Event were R-Pure Regional

India Culinary Contest, Barwizard Bar Challenge, Future Chef Contest, Live Sushi Challenge,

Taj Hospitality Brain Twister, Food Service India Biryani Competition, Asian Culinary

Challenge, Dress the Cake in 90 minutes, California Walnut Festive Culinary Challenge, IHG

“Manage The Damage” Contest, Floral Decoration & Towel Origami Competition as well as

Fruit & Vegetable Carving Competition.

“PANCHATVA” themed dinner was also organized post valedictory function on 18th October

2019 to celebrate the true spirit of Hospitality. As the name suggests, it comprised of dishes

related to all the elements (tatva) of the universe, namely earth, water, fire, sky and space.

A pool of 25 teams from different Hotel Management Colleges from across the length and

breadth of the country, came to participate in this Hospitality Ensemble

The Chief Guest for Closing Ceremony Mr. Ranjan Banerjee, General Manager, Crowne

Plaza Today New Delhi Okhla, along with Ms. Khushbu Sneha, Learning and Development

Manager, IBIS New Delhi Aerocity

CHE Championship Trophy 2019 was awarded to the team with the most exemplary

performance, and was bagged by Regency College of Hotel Management & Catering

Technology, Hyderabad.

Mr. Benjamin Steve, Faculty Representative from the institute of Champions was awarded

with Eclat Hospitality Education Professional of the Year 2019.

The same institute’s participant Mohd. Meraj was felicitated with the title of Eclat Young

Talent Award 2019. Eclat Hospitality group, a leader in hospitality talent solutions in India

bestowed the two award winners with Rs. 5000/- cash prize and a beautiful trophy.

10th India International Hotel travel & Tourism Conference- 2020:

Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology unveiled its

10th edition of India International Hotel, Travel and Tourism Research Conference on 14th &

15th February, 2020.

The two-day conference was one of the most outstanding forums involving Hotel,

Travel and Tourism Industry. The aim of this conference was to get industry

managers, tourism and hospitality researchers together and to provide a

platform, for deliberating on the current trends and issues associated with the

travel and hospitality business.

Day-1

The event saw its commencement with lighting the lamp by the Honorable Chief Guest, Mr.

Anil Bhandari, Chairman, AB Smart Concepts and Former CMD, India Tourism Development

Corporation, the Guest of Honor, Professor Francisco Dias, School of Tourism and Maritime

Technology (ESTM), Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal, Mr. Rao Narender Yadav,

Director, Woodpecker International Film Festival, Dr. Ali Afshar, Faculty of Art, Architecture

and Urban Planning, Mr. Iqbal Lahoori, Institute for Higher Education, Iran , Prof. Ganesh

Bagler, Associate Professor, Center for Computational Biology, Indraprastha Institute of

Information Technology, New Delhi, Prof. Sudhir Andrews, Distinguish Professor-

Management at Skill Maker Consultancy, and Shri. Gaur Kanjilal, Former Deputy General,

Ministry of Tourism Government of India, New Delhi.

The Annual Hospitality Management Journal “Indian Journal of Applied Hospitality &

Tourism Research” Vol. 12, (ISSN 0975-4954) was released on this occasion by conference

delegates.

The event commenced by the key note speech of Honorable Chief Guest, Mr. Anil Bhandari,

in which he emphasized on the carrying capacity of the tourism destination which needs to

be incorporated while developing sustainable tourist place. He quoted the example of

BHUTAN which is concerned about Carrying Capacity and GROSS HAPPINESS INDEX levels.

A Theme Dinner was organized, on the sidelines, for all the delegates at Institute. Along with

authentic culture and music of the region, the students were successful in presenting

authentic Punjabi food to all delegates of the conference. The theme in the restaurant

reflected the rich and remarkable culture of the North Indian state. The guests were delighted

to experience the hospitality of the service team and they also appreciated them for their

excellent serving skills.

Mr Rahul Prabhakar, Chief Engineer-Building Energy Projects Safety & Sustainability, ITC

HOTELS LTD shared his thoughts on the idea of sustainable development and mentioned

several profound measures which were taken by ITC to develop the same. He mentioned

about the LEED certification program, an USA based concept which stands for Leadership in

Energy and Environmental Design. LEED works in certification program of green building

worldwide.

Dr Francisco Dias, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal connected with the gathering on

“Role of Film Exposure on Tourism Destination Choice”. Mr. Dias stressed upon the influence

of media on tourism in modern era.

Dr. Ali Afshar, Assistant Professor from Architecture and Urban Planning in EqbalLahoori

Institute for Higher Education in Iran, in his discourse informed about Archi-Tourism and its

impact on tourism in Iran.

Prof. Ganesh Bagler, Associate Professor, IIITD, New Delhi spoke about computational

gastronomy and its influence on modern Indian cuisine. He informed the audience with

“Food & Technology-Data-driven food innovations: Opportunities for Tourism” where he

highlighted the importance of food by quoting that “cooking is the essence of human being.”

Shri. Gaur Kanjilal Former Deputy General, Government of India in the Ministry of Tourism,

New Delhi, recognized as a pioneer in areas of Tourism Service Excellence Marketing and

Promotions globally and prosperity through Tourism Education enlightened the academician

and researchers on “Sustainable Ways for Hospitality & Tourism Goals – Some Right Steps”

He addressed on sustainable goals and its importance towards hospitality industry.

Prof. Sudhir Andrews in his key note speech spoke about Redefining Tourism in Digital Age

and proposed some tools currently available to move forward in this direction. He mentioned

about the new generation and stressed upon the millennials who will bring digitalization and

bring quantum change. He spoke about the younger generation who are attracted to new

experiences and the hotels must focus on it to make the stay more valuable for them.

Day-2 On the second day, a Book titled “TRANSFORMING HOSPITALITY & TOURISM – SUSTAINABLE GOALS AND STRATEGIES FOR FUTURE “was also released which covered the selected papers from the conference. Dr. Mona Erfanian Salim, Faculty of Art, Architecture and Urban Planning, EqbalLahoori Institute for Higher Education, Iran enlightened the students on “Urban Tourism-Urban Open Public Space: An Opportunity for Sustainable Tourism” She spoke about the need for sustainable development in URBAN OPEN SPACES. She recommended that management structures should be made according to urban design at local and regional levels. Dr YankiHartijasti, Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas, Indonesia, shared her ideas on “Sustainable Practices Adopted by Hotels in Indonesia". In Indonesia, the need for things like high speed internet connection, mesmerizing experiences and advent of social media is playing an important part in the decision making progress of the prospective tourist. There is indeed many fold growth of budget hotels in South East Asia, however, they must focus on quality service and marketing. Dr. Naira Mkrtchyan, Armenian-Russian International University, Armenia elaborated on her work on “Development of Tourism in Armenia”. In Armenia, the government has taken various steps for tourism development such as Open Air Policy, Easy Visa Policy and even renovation and construction of various structures to enhance the tourist experience. Ms. Shalini Gaba, Chief Operating Officer, Eclat Hospitality, launched an application called Intern buddy, the first-ever hospitality application which connects with a knowledge database to create a revolutionized internship experience. The app can work as a social media platform where one can share his own experience, get evaluated and gain recognition from faculty, hotels, and other delegates. The aim is to create an impression of extraordinary from ordinary and bring out the best talents of the industry.

The Best Paper Award was given to Mr. Sandeep Chatterjee and Dr. Paramita Suklabaidya for their research paper titled “Socio-Demographic dynamics of Food Tourism: A tale of two cities - Delhi and New York” The Best Paper Presenter Award was given to Ms. Priyanka Verma for her paper titled “Housekeeping Department: A Study on Hotel Management Students Preference and Perspective”. The International Conference was well attended by around 70 academicians &

research scholars. More than 300 student participants got benefitted from the

discussions and deliberations made during the two-day mega-event.

Guest Lectures/ Personality Development Activity:

To create value addition, we conduct additional classes of Personality Development

with a view to enhancing communication skills and grooming of our students. These

had an impact on the placement performance and students have shown

improvement.

Special classes are being conducted for all Batches on PDP, Communication Skills,

Few Initiatives

• Essay Competition/Short Videos: On 22nd July, 2019 Under Jal Shakti Abhiyan initiative of GOI, Jal Diwas was celebrated. In an effort to spread awareness about conserving groundwater and proper utilization of rainwater.

• “Immersion of idols in the water bodies and its effects”: On 10th and 13th August 2019, a well-crafted “Awareness Drive on Immersion of Idols and Its Repercussions” the idea behind this drive was to aware the public and doing our part that can bring about some change for those who are celebrating festivals, but do not keep the environment safe.

• Initiative of Tree plantation: On 14th August, 2019the initiative of Tree Plantation. The project envisages of planting different types of trees and carefully nurturing them.

• On 19th August,2019 the institute organized a Blood Donation Camp in association with the Red Cross team. BCIHMCT takes pride in taking responsibility for the community by making efforts whenever possible Students and faculty voluntarily donated blood for the cause.

• Cleanliness drive: Swachhta Pakhwada week from 21st September, 2019 to 27th

September, 2019 by cleaning the campus and surrounding areas of the Institute was undertaken by the students.

• Plastic awareness week: Plastic Awareness Week was celebrated in the Institute, from the 23 September to 27 September 2019. To elaborate this, a essay competition was also held in college.

• Disaster Management Workshop on 3rd October, 2019: The Disaster Management has emerged as one of the most critical areas of concern in recent years. A number of initiatives are being taken in mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

• Initiative of – No use of fireworks: “Anti firecracker campaign” by organizing a poster making competition for the students on 23rd October, 2019. The aim behind conducting the competition was to spread the social message across the society of the harmful effects of crackers and to check the creative and artistic skills that our students possess.

• Vigilance awareness week was observed in Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of hotel management and catering technology from 28 October to 2nd November, 2019 this year with the theme “Integrity- A way of life” students and faculty members started this event by taking a pledge on integrity.

• On 7th November, 2019- Serving the humanity is equivalent to serving the God. Love of mankind is, in Vivekananda's opinion, the worship of God. A person who devotes his life for the betterment of the human race is loved by God. Philanthropic activity by pioneers in budding Hospitality Education-Visit to Goonj.

• The Constitution Day or Samvidhan Divas on 26th November, 2019 to honor and remember Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar the architect of Indian constitution. Students were given insights of Indian Constitution and the importance of fundamental rights.

• A “Voters awareness campaign” for students to vote in Delhi Elections at the BCIHMCT

premises on 17th Jan, 2020 to increase the voters turn out.

• Save Electricity: An awareness campaign on FEB 27, 2020. The visit was scheduled to convey the message and learn about water conservation, electricity misuse and use of less plastic for sustainable development.

• Debate Competition: On 2nd March, 2020 BCIHMCT organized a debate competition, the

student spoke eloquently on the topic “Air Pollution-burning of open garbage”.

• Talk Masters” - the debating club of BCIHMCT, organized the ANNUAL DEBATE COMPETITION at the BCIHMCT premises on MARCH 04, 2020. The topic for the debate was “SOCIAL MEDIA IS TAKING OVER TRADITIONAL MEDIA FORORGANIZATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY AND PROMOTIONAL TOOL.”

As Covid -19 Approaches

• An effective step to fight the novel Coronavirus threat : On 13th March, 2020

BCIHMCT conducted a sanitization programme by cleaning and disinfecting class rooms, kitchens, banquet halls, offices, library and other public areas of the institute by fumigation.

• On 25th March,2020 the students were asked for their contribution on women empowerment in the trying times of lockdown in the entire nation, as women are facing tough times keeping their families healthy and safe by multi-tasking and fulfilling their responsibilities in the form of household chores.

• On 28th March,2020 we also encouraged the students to record a 3 minute video on

conservation of water of the Yamuna River and raising awareness about the same

• On 1st April, 2020 an online art competition was organized by “Yo gems foundation”. Students from various institutes from all across the country participated. The theme of the competition was, “fighting with the corona virus and prevention methods”.

• On the Occasion of Earth Day on 22nd April ,2020 an online poster making competition was held. The objective was to make the students and the community at larger scale aware about environmental concerns and how the same can be addressed.

• On 17th May, 2020 after our honorable Prime Minister motivated people to boycott international products and utilise Indian products by being “vocal for Local” our students were given this theme and were asked to be creative by showing their artwork under this theme.

• On 29th May,2020 an online quiz under the aegis of Eco club which focused on “Biodiversity and Wildlife” to make students learn about the world where they live and about various species that inhabit it.

• On 5th June,2020 On Worlds Environment day, We organized a poster making competition and advised students to plant a sapling in their locality wherein we received participation in huge numbers from the students in the form of posters and pictures.

Efforts Taken towards Achieving Academic Excellence:

1. Active research orientation of the faculties to acquire effectiveness in Tourism and Hospitality operations.

2. Internal Quality Assurance Cell is continuing with its tasks for realizing the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance via developing a system for improvement in the performance of academics.

3. Effective Mentoring System is being implemented. Attendance, academics, training and placement is being supervised by the mentors.

4. Seminar, Symposium, Debate etc are included as regular academic activity. These are designed to specifically assist the students of BCIHMCT to appreciate rapidly changing and intensifying competition in tourism and hospitality industry.

5. Emphasizing on developing habit of Self Learning Practices among the students by way of introducing assignments, projects and project research.

6. Academic – Institution Partnership, where by all needs during the academic year is planned in the calendar and meticulously being followed. Response is great and industry is coming forward with total support.

7. Alumni and students’ interactions were conducted.

8. “Hunar Se Rozgar Tak” Training program for 3 Batches of 73 students was completed for Food Production (26 students), Food & Beverage Service (26 students) and Room Attendants (21students).

9. Student Council was formed to give students an opportunity to develop leadership by organizing and carrying out institute activities and service projects. In addition to planning events that contribute to Institute spirit and community welfare, the student council is the voice of the student body.

10. The faculty members also explore opportunities for on the job training & refresher courses in different hotel properties and other universities across to upgrade themselves with the latest trends and technologies prevailing in the Industry and academia.

11. The students have also been given International Exposure for events (UAE). We also send our students abroad for the vocational training which is a part of the course. (Maldives, France).

12. A Mentoring System is being followed in the college where every faculty member has been assigned 15 to 20 students who guide them and keep a watch over them throughoutthe4yearsofcourse.

13. BCIHMCT received an award for “Best in Research Activities” at Global Education Summit Awards.

14. BCIHMCT have recorded sessions for Teacher Refresher Courses on SWAYAM portal of MHRD and faculty members have also enrolled for refresher courses for teachers on SWAYAM portal.

15. BCIHMCT faculty get deputed/invited as the judge for various Culinary Competitions at all levels Nationally-for kids in schools, for house-wives, entrepreneurs, culinary professionals.

16. NIOS- National Institute of Open Schooling, Noida, Ministry of HRD, invites guest/subject expert for their live PCP (Personal Contact Programme) on the community radio.

CSR Activities:

1. The students of the college are continuously engaged in CSR activities for the under privileged kids. Regular visits are made to blind schools, and NGO’s

(Naaz Foundation in G.K. for those affected by AIDS and Shanti Sahyog, Nehru Place) where these children are made aware on certain essential practices which are necessary to be followed in our daily lives.

2. BCIHMCT students and faculty works with NGO like FLO (FICCI Ladies Organization) for the empowerment of under privileged girls in the locality through baking workshops in South Delhi.

3. For the preservation of the environment BCIHMCT is recycling all the food waste from the kitchens through composting. There is also a rain water harvesting plant in the campus premises. Plantation drives are also conducted on regular basis by the teachers & students in the campus lawn.

4. BCIHMCT was nominated for the Swachhta ranking awards last year in Pune and this time also we have participated in the same, in Delhi at the Ashok Hotel. Regular cleaning drives are conducted in the institute and the surrounding areas for the same.

5. BCIHMCT faculty members have setup bakery infrastructure at ASHAKIRAN campus, Rohini, for under privileged, maintained by Govt. of Delhi.

1. BCIHMCT as hosted various professional competitions organized by hospitality professionals as being the venue partner.

2. Faculty members have been Project Guides and Mentors for IP University and NIFTEM, M-Tech Students.

3. Faculty members (Food Production) and students of BCIHMCT are members of

The Indian Culinary Forum, India's largest association of Professional Chefs involved in organizing educational summit and workshop, which acts as a source of knowledge by providing information on latest trends in Hospitality Industry.

4. Event Management has become effective training methodology to acquire best managerial practices and professional skills. BCIHMCT organizes National and International events and has placed itself at the National Horizon in the field of Hospitality and Tourism Education with benchmarking standards.

5. Intra College Competitions- To develop competence, professional empowerment and organizing Skills amongst the students amidst Team Spirit, BCIHMCT organized an eventful week of multiple competitions concerning various areas of the Operations as well as Creative and Leadership Qualities.

6. Professional and Culinary Inter College Competition - Students of BCIHMCT have participated and won in various professional and culinary inter college

7. BCIHMCT supports Skill India Movement’ by conducting HSRT (Hunar se
