Part A

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality

enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year.

With a view to excel in everything that we have undertaken at the college, QUALITY is

paramount in all our endeavours. The plan of action chalked by IQAC for the academic year

2007 � 2008 towards quality enhancement is as follows:

Details of the plans of the institution for the academic year 2007� 2008:

1. To begin lectures on the first working day i.e. 09.06.2007.

2. To ensure 100% utilization of lecture timings.

3. To prepare and publish yearly academic calendar before the beginning of the

academic year.

4. To provide maximum opportunities to students in terms of academics, sports, co-

curricular activities and exposure to international advancements.

5. To make greater use of modern teaching methods like audio-visual screening, role

plays, simulation, field visits and surveys, mock interviews, visits , dramas,

assignments, presentations, projects amongst others.

6. To introduce a bi-annual research bulletin to encourage research culture among staff.

7. To introduce more practical sessions and lectures, than prescribed by the university, for

subjects which are difficult.

8. To inform the guardians about the first term results of their wards, who have not faired

well so that more effort can be put in the second term to avoid the failure of candidates.

9. To encourage Advance Learners.

10. To encourage mentoring by management, corporate guests, teachers, student to student,

English speaking to vernacular students.

11. To give special attention to students participating in extra curricular activities.

12. To promptly redress student grievances.

13. To regularly maintain, repair and upgrade infrastructure to facilitate effective teaching-

learning.

14. To make available online access to journals for the benefit of students and staff.

15. To update library with latest books, journals, CDs etc.

16. To introduce Centralized Assessment Project for question paper setting-Department �

wise.

17. To introduce an Appraisal System for non -teaching staff.

18. To depute as many teachers as possible for seminars or workshops for enrichment of

knowledge.

19. To encourage teachers for research work.

20. To arrange special programmes for non-teaching staff.

21. To work harder on fulfilling our social objectives.

22. Spreading social message through our annual college magazine.

23. To conduct greater number of seminars and workshops of National and International

importance on our campus.

24. To encourage more students and teachers to participate in the International Exchange

Program with St. Mary�s College of Business and Economics, California, U.S.A.

25. To organize visits for the students to various research centres for advanced knowledge

in the field of biotechnology.

26. Strengthening the institution-industry linkages.

27. To introduce schemes for the economically challenged students.

28. To care for the environment by creating more awareness.

The IQAC has taken initiatives towards fulfillment of the above objectives

which have been stated in the following pages. Progress was made in the following areas

through the year.

Academic Calender (2008-2009) has been prepared before the beginning of the first

term of the academic year 2008-2009.

We encouraged students to participate in international advanced training programmes

with foreign universities, seminars and workshops to update them with contemporary

knowledge.

Lecture method of teaching was supplemented by use of audio visuals, group

discussions, presentations, discussions on case studies, industrial visits, project work,

field surveys, visits to research centers etc.

Talks and Seminars on contemporary topics were organized for the benefit of the

students.

Additional tests, assignments, were conducted for final year students

Guardian teachers were appointed for weaker students to provide special coaching to

them.

Guidance lectures on subjects which are difficult for the students were organized.

Counseling for weak students after lecture hours to bring them to the class level.

Conducted Test Series for the students.

The parents of under-performing students were called to have a discussion with the

class teacher and subject teacher.

Advance Learners were given additional work, references and guidance. They are also

awarded prizes as motivation.

Notes prepared by teachers highlighting important points were given for different

subjects. Copies of these notes are available in the library as well as on the college

website - www.mes.ac.in

Chapter- wise tests and additional preliminary examination for final year students.

Attendance of the students was monitored on a monthly basis and action was taken.

We keep a track of the performance of the students. Regular feedback was given to

their parents.

Problems book on accounting subjects are prepared by our teachers and supplied to

the students at the time of admission. The students are required to bring it to the class

room every day so that no time is wasted in dictation of problems. Copies of these

notes are also available in the library and the college website.

Revision lectures were arranged for different subjects for the benefit of the students.

In-order to help vernacular medium students our language teacher gives more stress on

presentations and oral communication in the classroom.

Paper solution for difficult subjects was made available for the final year students.

Students were motivated by awarding them with prizes on their academic and non-

academic feats. The college has a points system in-order to ascertain the Best Student

of the Year taking into account academic, attendance, discipline and extra curricular

activities of the student.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:

Our forte at Pillai�s has always been to mould the total personality of the student with

relevant inputs of best practices and social awareness. We believe, everything we do

should reflect and support the college�s mission and core values. Be it academics, music,

sports or art, our activities contribute significantly to the total development of every

student.

Our VISION is �Education for all�. To fulfill our vision we welcome students from

diverse backgrounds irrespective of region, religion, caste, economic strata and academic

performance in earlier years.

We believe in � providing quality education, creating employment opportunities,

providing community service, overall personality development and respect for the

environment.

To achieve our objectives a number of initiatives have been taken as mentioned below:

Providing Quality Education

We have entered in to a partnership with the prestigious St. Mary�s College of Business

& Economics, California, and U.S.A. for hosting of exchange programmes for student &

faculty members. Our students got the opportunity of being the recipients of an

international advanced training programme designed specially for the Indian context.

This Programme is an annual event and students and faculty from St. Mary�s college will

also visit our college.Students of our college attended a Management Training

Programme of three week (from 22nd February to 11th March, 2008) at St. Mary�s and were

exposed to a wide variety of business practices prevailing in America from marketing &

finance to negotiation and ethical issues. They visited Genentech, Microsoft, Federal Reserve

Bank USA, Target: Retail Store, Apple Computers, Intel and other companies where they learnt

about trends in globalization and how US firms pursue global strategies.

There were interactive sessions with the regular American business school students and faculty

drawn from a wide range of background and business interests. They received a certificate of

training from the St. Mary's College of California. One of our students Ms. Shreya Shukla visited

St. Mary�s for the second time as the Peer Advisor and was felicitated for her coordination. All

the other students received certificated and mementos. Students were taken for sight seeing to

Hollywood Universal Studios, Disneyland, Beverly Hills, Napa Valley and many other places.

We provide our students with paper solutions, notes on difficult subjects, guardian

teachers, updated libraries, additional tests, incentives and awards to encourage them to

be able to realize their potentials.

Ms. Neha Dalal, a student of our college, was Mumbai University Topper in the subject

of Computer Science at the T.Y.B.Sc. Examination held in March, 2007. She has scored

496 marks out of a total of 600 and has secured.82.67percentage. Additional coaching

after lecture hours, solving past university papers, arranging expert guidance lectures,

additional tests, were some of the initiatives taken by the faculty members which brought

about this achievement.

Various departments of our college have done their mite in contributing to the pool of

youth power by providing the right skill-sets and the environment to unleash their

potential. The following are their endeavours:

DEPARTMENT OF C.S. I.T.

A number of guest lectures were organized for the students of T.Y.I.T and T.Y.C.S.

Guardian Teachers were appointed for under performing students.

Parents of students in the Attendance Defaulter list were called to discuss measures to

improve their attendance.

Test series was conducted for the students of F.Y./S.Y./T.Y. C.S./I.T. for every topic.

Extra lectures were arranged for the students for solving problems.

a) Swati V. took extra lecture for students of S.Y.I.T for C language.

b) Mamta Nair took extra lecture for students of T.Y.I.T for C++.

c) Ragita Nair took extra lecture for students of T.Y.I.T for Advanced Java.

Paper solution for difficult subjects was given to the students of T.Y.C.S.

Project work of T.Y.C.S. and T.Y.I.T. are started as soon as S.Y.C.S. and S.Y.I.T. exams

are over so that students complete the project before regular lectures start.To help

students in project, project guides are appointed. Prof. Abhijit Salvi & Prof. Pradeep P.

conducted guidance session for the students to enable them to successfully complete their

project work.

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

Organised Guidance Lecture for T.Y.B.Com. students in Business Economics (Paper III)

on 25th January 2008.

DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTANCY

Guidance lecture on Financial Accounting and Direct and Indirect tax for T.Y.B.Com.

students on 1st of February, 2008. The resource person was Ms. Minaxi Rachcha from

ICL College Vashi.

Test series was conducted in the subject of Financial Accounting by Prof. Monali Ray for

T.Y.B.Com. students.

Test series was conducted in the subject of Direct and Indirect tax by Prof. Deepa Pillai

for T.Y.B.Com. students.

Special tests were conducted for the academically weak students of T.Y.B.Com. in the

subject of Cost Accounting by Prof. Gajanan Wader.

Advance Learners were encouraged to solve additional problems.

Conducted presentations for F.Y.BCom.on the topic �Business Turnaround Corporate

Restructuring�

Project work was given to students of Advertising, although not required as per university

syllabus, in order to enhance their practical knowledge.

Notes highlighting important points in Management and Production Planning are

prepared by teachers and given to the students at the beginning of the term so that more

time can be devoted to teaching during the lecture. Copies of these notes are available in

the library.

DEPARTMENT OF LAW

Projects in �Cooperative Sectors� for the commerce and Accounting &Finance students.

Field surveys were organized for the cooperative sectors and data has been collected

related to registration, administration, financial aspects and accounting policies, used by

the co-operative entities.

DEPARTMENT OF BMS

Extra lectures were conducted by Prof. Deepa Pillai in the subject of Finacial

Accountancy for F.Y.B.M.S. (Sem.1) students.

Subject of Quantitative Mathematics of T.Y.B.M.S. being difficult, the lectures on this

subject is started as soon as S.Y.B.M.S. result is announced.

Conducted test in the subject of logistics for T.Y.B.M.S.students (SemV) by Prof. Sachin

Deshmukh.

Guardian Teachers were appointed for under performing students.

Organised Guest lecture for S.Y.B.M.S. students in the subject of Marketing on 16th

February 2008. The resource person was Prof. Deepa Makkad from ICL College, Vashi.

Counseling was undertaken for the students whose performance was not satisfactory.

Test Series conducted for the subject of Entrepreneurship for T.Y.B.M.S. by Prof.

Smitha Nair.

Test Series conducted for Marketing Research and IMTP for T.Y.B.M.S. students by

Prof. Prerna Sharma.

Parents of students in the Attendance Defaulter list were called to discuss measures to

Conducted Guest Lecture for F.Y.B.M.S. students in the month of February, 2008. The

resource person was Ms. Apeksha Sharma, Legal Assistant, Kadam Associates.

Conducted Guest Lecture for T.Y.B.M.S. students on Entrepreneurship. The resource

person was Dr. Anish Pillai, Senior Associate Finance, SYNTEL.

Conducted Guest Lecture for T.Y.B.M.S. students in the subject of Entrepreneurship on

10th and 11th March 2008. The resource person was Prof. Vivekanand Pawar from

Babasaheb Gawade Institute of Management Studies and Research.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

1. Audio visual screening on effective communication (an interactive session) was conducted.

Feedback was taken where in students acknowledged that the screening helped them to view the

theory taught to them in the class, in a practical way, because of the examples and illustrations.

2. Remedial English teaching to some students who having come from a vernacular background,

found it difficult to understand concepts in English.

3. Multimedia CDs were purchased for the benefit of students and are available in the library.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Students of first and second year attended summer training in various institutions,

hospitals, pathology laboratories and manufacturing units.

One student of third year and four students of second year participated in a Workshop on

Statistics conducted by the Royal College, Mumbai.

Three students of third year and two of second year attended a Marine Biotechnology

symposium at Ruparel College during 18th January. 2008 and 20th January. 2008.

Two students of third year and five of second year atended a Workshop on

Nanotechnology and Latest Trends conducted at VPMs College (polytechnic) on January.

5th, 2008.

Sixteen selected students of our college attended a Symposium at BARC. Life Science

Symposium.

Immunohematology training of ten days at IIH KEM campus successfully completed by

2 students of third year.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Prof. Smitha Jayaram has given extra coaching for F.Y.B.Com for the mathematics

subject.

Prof. Sudha Ramesh gave extra coaching to ATKT students of F.Y.I.T. in the subject of

Mathematics.

Test Series was conducted for the F.Y.B.Com. students in the subject of Mathematics.

Advance Learners were encouraged to solve problems involving higher mathematical

abilities.

Creating Employment Opportunities

There is a dedicated training and Placement Cell providing career guidance to all the students

at or college. The Cell regularly conducts workshops on soft skills and company-specific tests

and training programmes for successful selection of all eligible students. A fully computerized

state-of-the-art air-conditioned auditorium is available for conducting pre-placement

presentation to corporate bodies

To enable our students to get an opportunity for a good placement a number of corporates are

invited to the campus.

Our students are exposed to the actual work environment through industrial visits.

Our add-on courses in computers have helped our students to gain employment opportunities.

�Sambhav� is a mega- marketing fair organized by our parent organization. (19th to 22nd of

January, 2008). The database of our students was forwarded to various corporates

participating in the fair for increasing opportunities for employment.

A number of joint campus interviews were organized which had participation from students

from colleges in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. They are as follows:

Accenture (B.Sc. I.T. and C.S. 2008)

A joint campus was organized for B.Sc. I.T. & B.Sc. C.S. on July 14th and 15th, 2007.

Campus Ambassador Program for Infosys (B.Sc. I.T. C.S. B.A/B.Com./B.Sc./B.M.S.)

A campus Ambassador program was organized for all the streams for 2008 batch in

September 2007.

About 40 students from Pillai�s College appeared for the test. 10 students were short listed.

Nidhi Sharma (T.Y.I.T.) was chosen as the Campus Ambassador for I.T. giant, Infosys.

GUNNEBO (B.M.S. 2008 Batch)

Campus interview was organized for the BPO on 11th December 2007.

11 students were selected.

ICICI Prudential (B.Sc. I.T. C.S. B.A./B.Com./B.Sc./ B.M.S.)

A Campus interview was organized for the Pillai�s students of B.M.S .for the 2008 batch.

Infosys for I.T.-C.S. roles and for BPO (B.Sc. I.T. C.S. B.A./B.Com./B.Sc./ B.M.S.)

A joint campus was organized for B.Sc. I.T. & B.Sc. C.S. for the I.T. roles and for the BPO

roles for B.A., B.Com. and B.M.S. 2008 batch.

Students from 30 colleges in Bombay ad New Bombay participated

2 students were selected for I.T. roles.

21 students were selected for BPO roles.

Our students also participated in Joint Campus organized in Dhanukar College, Ville

Parle. 3 students have been selected in Patni Computers.

A seminar / Interactive session on skills facing the interview and GD by Ms. Yashodha

Durge from PIMSR.

Providing Community Service

Through our annual college magazine we have made an attempt to highlight and create more

awareness on burning social issues of particular importance to the youth for e.g. Aids,

Female Foeticide etc. Our College received the Prestigious Prof. M.V. Chandgadkar

Trophy for the Best College Magazine for 2006-2007 and the cover page was highly

appreciated for spreading a social message.

The college gives great importance to social up-liftment activities and the involvement of the

students in this activities.We has a Social Awareness Cell, including all departments, to

carry out our social objectives.

The following activities were organized by the cell in the right earnest:

1. Our students made a visit to Kalyani Mahila & Balak Seva Sanstha, New Panvel. They

performed recreational activities and presented gifts to the inmates.

2. Participated in the Pulse Polio Vaccination Program of Government of India from 5th August

to 10th August 2007 in New Panvel as well as Khanda Colony.

3. Computer association conducted educational campus to teach the peons and their children- �The

Basics of Computers�. Two consecutive programs were conducted on 22-01-2008 & 3-02-2008

with participation of nearly 40 children and 10 peons. Knowledge of basics of computers such as

M.S.Word, Paint, M.S.Access followed by software and hardware was shared with them.

4. Organized an AIDS awareness rally in New Panvel.

5. Remedial teaching for weaker sections in Kamothe area, which covered 3 schools.

6. Computer literacy program in Polio School, New Panvel.

7. Students of Computer Association arranged a workshop for teaching the poor.

NATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICE

The main of N.S.S. is to inculcate the spirit of social work and facilitate personality development

of students. With this aim in mind the following activities were organized this year:

1. Pulse Polio Camp from 5th August to 10th August 2007 in New Panvel as well as Khanda

Colony.

2. Blood Donation camp on 18th September 2007 in our college campus. Given 90 bottles to

Civil Hospital Alibag, Raigad.

3. Tree Plantation Camp on 9th October 2007 in our college garden.

4. AIDS Rally.

5. Street plays to create AIDS awareness for factory workers at Hindalco and Shell Company,

Taloja.

6. Free medical check- up camp in Khanda village.

7. Students attended Workshops & Exhibitions on social issues.

8. Literacy programme in the subject of maths and science for children in three villages in

raigad district.

9. A ten day residential camp was organized at Rohinjan village from 22nd October to 31st

October, 2007. Special activities that took place were construction of mud roads, painting of

school and preservation of natural surroundings, cleaning school tanks making permanent

concrete school stage, awareness on anti- dowry, anti �smoking, cleanliness etc.

10. Lectures were conducted on ethics and personality development for the students.

11. Students were encouraged to attend workshops and exhibitions to update them on current

social problems.

Overall Personality Development

To develop a well rounded personality of the students, the following committees have

organized a number of activities.

STUDENTS COUNCIL

To help students realize their potentials, we encourage them to participate in maximum

number of in-house and inter-collegiate festivals.

We organize Pillai�s Youth festival, which is an intra-collegiate fest, in which all colleges

affiliated to the Pillai�s group participate.

Our students have not only won district, state, national awards but also international

awards in cultural activities.

We encourage our students by providing them all the facilities that they require to compete

at different levels. We provide them with choreographers for fashion shows& dances,

musicians for singing performances etc.. We also provide them with conveyance and teachers

accompany students for the different inter-collegiate events.

Sports activities play an equally crucial role in a students development along with academic

inputs and hence our college gives great importance to participation in the same

9. Winner of Karnala opens held at Karnala Sports Academy in the Month December 2007.

10. Winner of Football Tournament organized by Reliance Group at

12. Mr.Manoj Singh of our college won Silver Medal in University of

Our student is the NAVI MUMBAI PIONEER OF PARKOUR.

Parkour is a physical art of French origin and this rare art has found home in the life of an

enthusuiastic Pillaite, Mr. Akshat Bhargava, from S.Y.I.T.Our student is one of the two Navi

Mumbai Pioneers of this art.

The college has been able to shine in sports because of the encouragement given to students through

The �Spectrum�, our annual college magazine, is truly reflective of the budding talent at

Pillai�s�, bringing out the best from the students and making them aware of their innate abilities.

Our College received the Prestigious Prof. M.V. Chandgadkar Trophy for the Best College

Magazine for 2006-2007. We received the Certificate of Commendation given in appreciation

for Excellence among college magazines received this year.

Through our college magazine we have made an attempt too highlight and create more

awareness on burning social issues of particular importance to the youth for e.g. Aids, Female

Foeticide etc.

We have introduced a new section in our magazine �Lens� which is the photography section

where our students have contributed photographs clicked by them on current social issues and

Respect the environment

Our college immensely cares for the environment.

We continually make efforts to make students aware of their responsibilities of protecting nature.

The entire concept of the campus is being one with nature, which is why the campus is situated

amidst existing mango groves. Not one tree was uprooted to accommodate the college; rather

the college was built to accommodate the mango trees within its confines.Along one of the

boundaries of the Campus runs the gently flowing Kalundre River undisturbed by the onset of

'civilization' along its shores.

Sparrow Shelter Drive: Many NGOs have taken up the cause of Mumbai's declining

sparrow population. Taking a cue from this we have put up sparrow shelters in different

places of our campus to sensitize our students.

We regularly carry out tree plantation drives not only on our campus but also in the

neighbouring areas.

Caring for Bee Hives. We have a large number of bee hives on our college building

walls which have never been harmed by us.

Nature Club

Nature club works on the objective of inculcating interest and awareness in the minds of

young students regarding the value of environment and ways to care for it.The following

activities were carried out by the club:

scenic beauty, nature trails, & global warming.

2. Street plays were conducted on different issues to spread the �Go Green� message.

We are affiliated to the University of Mumbai and so we follow the curriculum designed

by the Board of Studies, Mumbai University.

Staff members attend workshops and meetings related to syllabi reformation.

Students are encouraged to participate in and present papers at seminars and workshops

within and outside the college and are also given guidance for the same. Our Bio-

Technology students have attended various workshops and symposiums and have also

presented papers.

Our staff uses various teaching methods to simplify the learning process and make it

more interesting for the students. Apart from regular lectures we organize group

discussions, audio-visual presentations, talks by experts on important topics, discussion

on case studies and industrial visits, field surveys for the benefit of our students.

Handbooks have been designed and printed by our teachers for subjects which the

students find difficult.

Students are encouraged to work on projects, though not compulsory for them, and

present it with the latest teaching aids like power point presentations, O.H.P.

Field surveys were organized for the cooperative sectors and data has been collected

related to registration, administration, financial aspects and accounting policies, used by

the co-operative entities.

We are affiliated to the University of Mumbai which does not allow us to offer

inter disciplinary programmes, but we do offer students add on courses in

computers.

We encourage students to participate in the international exchange programme

with St. Mary�s College of Business and Economics, California, U.S.A.

Our teachers are encouraged to participate in workshops, seminars and research

forum which give them an opportunity to interact with colleagues from other

disciplines, thus adding to their teaching skills and communications.

a. We have started Centralized paper setting for B. Com., B.M.S., and B.Com.

Accounting and Finance B.Sc. Computer Science and Information Technology,

department- wise. All facilities are provided to create the right environment for the

purpose mentioned.

b. The examination programme is announced in the beginning of the academic

year through the academic calendar. The detailed programme regarding last date for

portion completion, question paper submission, mark list submission and

declaration of results are announced in advance and also displayed on the web site.

c. We had centralized in-semester examinations for B.M.S., B.Com. Accounts and

Finance, B.Sc. Information Technology and Computer Science.

d. We conduct centralized assessment of answer papers for B. Com., B.M.S., and

B.Com. Accounting and Finance B.Sc. Computer Science and Information

Technology from 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. This ensures timely declaration

of results.

e. Unfair Means Enquiry Committee headed by Mrs. Monali Ray and its members

handled all the cases reported to it in a systematic manner. The committee members

interacted with students and guardians and counseled them to avoid future

recurrences of the same.

f. Moderation of answer papers was carried out for all subjects by the various

g. Additional Preliminary Examination and Periodic Tests are held for Final Year

Literacy programme in the subject of maths and science for children in three villages in

raigad district.

A ten day residential camp was organized at Rohinjan village from 22nd October. to 31

October, 2007. Special activities that took place were construction of mud roads, painting of

school and preservation of natural surroundings, cleaning school tanks, making permanent

concrete school stage, awareness on anti- dowry, anti �smoking, cleanliness etc.

Lectures were conducted on ethics and personality development for the students.

Students were encouraged to attend workshops and exhibitions to update them on current

social problems.

The Learning Resource Centre continues to be an essential component of the

Institution with outstanding vision & mission. The combination of carefully selected

print and non-print resources accessible via library OPAC and supported by exceptionally

Online subscription of Journals for students and staff. We have subscribed to Multi-

Media CDs and online journals costing five lacs this year for the benefit of students and

staff. Students and staff are also allowed to issue CDs for their reference.

We follow Open Access System through which students and faculty can search books

21st Edition of Dewey Decimal Classification System.

The OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalogue) is one of the most heavily used databases of

the library & is accessible on all working days of the library. OPAC is searchable by author,

The main task of reference service is to connect users with right information. It provides

necessary assistance to users locating information or document of their choice. It is open

All the newly acquired documents have been classified, catalogued and kept ready for

use. Special care was taken to neatly maintain the library stacks to facilitate users to

locate the desired document quickly, worn out labels were immediately replaced.

The library also undertook binding of 300 volumes in-house.

The catalogues of current publications in different subjects also brought out during the

year and are available in the library.

22. Number of courses for which student assessment of teacher is introduced and the

action taken on student feedback:

For the academic year 2007 � 2008 computerized feedback was taken without disclosing

the identity of the students.

Computerized consolidated feedback was taken class wise, teacher wise and subject wise.

Feedback was taken for all classes of B.Com., B.Com. Accounts & Finance, B.M.S.,

B.Sc. Computer Science, Information Technology and Biotechnology from all the

students.

A copy of feedback is filed in the personal file of the teacher; a copy is given to the

H.O.D. and principal and to the teacher concerned so that he/she could work on further

improvement. The lecturer is counseled firstly by the head of the department and then

by the principal.

This year onwards we have made the admission forms available on web site. Our

admission forms for all classes were available on web-site www.mes.ac.in.

Entire admission process is computerized. Once a student is enrolled his / her entire

information data is stored and used for receipts, identity cards and students list. This

software has been developed by Software Development Department of our college.

Attendance records of students attending lecturers of all classes is computerized.

Our college examinations results preparation and printing of mark list are completely

computerized. Printing of bonafide certificates, examination results and mark sheets

have been computerized.

25. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:

The college is located in New Panvel in a multi - dimensional education complex which

has state-of-the-art infrastructure providing the right environment for learning.

Increasing infrastructural facility is an ongoing process at our campus and being a a

growing institution it is a never ending process.

Three classrooms were converted into Audio Visual Rooms.

Video conferencing rooms and a virtual learning centre have been provided. The

technology used is VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal). It enables quality education

independent of geographical location.

Due to frequent load shedding, power to the campus was affected. In order to solve the

problem generator has been installed to cater to the needs of the entire campus.

Teachers are all well versed in computers and make use of it while submitting question

papers, mark sheets, reports etc. Computers are available in all the departments as well as

in the office and in the library. Hence internet access is very easy, and is made available

free of cost.

Students also make extensive use of the computers for making presentations, project

work, reference work by internet surfing etc. Computer and Internet facility is available

free of charge for students.

Free access to computer upto 6p.m. to all students.

Since we have a well developed, fully established I.T. Department , consultancy is

given to the teachers and non-teaching staff, easily regarding new computer

programmes, as and when needed.

Computers are reserved in the lab for staff for internet surfing.

Book Bank is a facility introduced by or college with the aim of helping the financially

29. Activities and support from Alumni Association:

Alumni Association provides a forum for the alumni to connect back to the college and

to assist present students in shaping their careers.

We make use of the expertise and knowledge of our alumni for the benefit of our

present students.

Our alumni regularly visit the college to share their experiences and guide students on

academic and non-academic matters.

We have been able to continue to develop linkages with the corporate world through

the ex-students who have been placed in good companies.

We had one meeting in each term with the members of alumni association.

Members of alumni association were invited for the annual function of the college.

At our college sports festival we organized special events like Tug of war for the

alumni�s.

30. Activities and support from the Parent -Teacher Association:

We have continuous interaction with the parents through parent- teacher

meetings(one-to-one basis) .These meetings are organized by each department to discuss

various issues regarding student�s academic/non-academic performance, attendance,

discipline, exam pattern, study tours, certificate courses etc. All teachers and parent

actively participated in the discussions. Suggestions from parents were implemented.

The meeting of the parents of defaulter students was called at the end of the first term.

This resulted in improving the attendance and the results in the second term.

Parents were given the mobile numbers of the concerned class teachers so that they can

have regular and direct feedback about their children with relation to attendance and

performance.

The class teachers are available for meeting parents between 11.30 a.m. to 12.45 p.m.

The Vice Principal meets regularly parents of atleast 5 to 10 students whose

attendance progress is not satisfactory.

We have a Health Committee in our college to propagate health awareness among

students and staff.

First Aid boxes are available and are regularly checked. Replacement of medicine is

done as and when required.

This year we arranged Yoga sessions for the benefit of our students.

Lecture on �Drug Abuse� by Dr. Shanti Manadiar and her team from National

Addiction Research Centre, Andheri on 23rd August, 2007.

Guidance Session for girl students on health issue by Dr. Abhay Shete, Gynaecologist

and Obstetrician, New Panvel.

Free Blood - Group Detection Camp was organized for all staff members.

We have a canteen committee inorder to keep a check and improve the functioning of

the canteen Student repsentatives are includeds in the same. Regular meetings are held

for prompt redressal of canteen related problems.

Participated in the Pulse Polio Vaccination Program of Government of India from 5th

August to 10th August 2007 in New Panvel as well as Khanda Colony.

Organized Blood Donation camp on 18th September 2007 in our college campus.Given

90 bottles to Civil Hospital Alibag, Raigad. Received Certificate from the Governor of

All students participating in any sports events are given free transport

allowance.

10 extra marks are added to their total marks at the final examination.

Additional examinations were conducted for those students who

could not appear for their regular examination due to tournaments which

coincided with the same dates.

Our college organizes annual residential sports camp to train and motivate our

students to participate in inter-collegiate as well as intra-collegiate sports

tournaments.

We also host tournaments at all levels in our college campus.

The Cell regularly conducts workshops on soft skills and company-specific tests and

training programmes for successful selection of all eligible students. A seminar /

Interactive session on skills facing the interview and GD by Ms. Yashodha Durge from

PIMSR.

A fully computerized state-of-the-art air-conditioned auditorium is available for

conducting pre-placement presentation to corporate bodies

We organize industrial visits for all streams to expose them to actual work

environment.

Our add-on courses in computers have helped our students to gain employment

opportunities.

�Sambhav� is a mega- marketing fair organized by our parent organization. (19th to

22nd of January, 2008). The database of our students was forwarded to various corporates

participating in the fair for increasing opportunities for employment.

A number of joint campus interviews were organized which had participation from

37. Development program for non-teaching staff:

We encourage our non-teaching staff to have further education.

Our Library staff have attended the following Workshops and Seminars:

1. Attended one day state level seminar on �Teaching methodologies and libraries in digital

age� held at Sree Narayan Guru College of Commerce, Chembur

2. State Level Conference attended on the theme of � Teaching Methodologies and Libraries

in Digital Era� held on 27th February. 2007 in Mumbai.

3. Lecture attended on � Knowledge Society and Life Long Learning: A Role of Librarian�

held on 16th June 2007 in TISS, Mumbai.

4. Seminar attended on the theme of � Changing Dimensions of academic Libraries and

Impact of NAAC � held on 17th Oct. 2007 in Mumbai.

5. Attended two-Day Workshop on open Source Software Tools for Library Professionals:

Integrated Library System_ Koha And Content Management System- Drupal organized

by Open Source Software Resource Centre, C-DAC Mumbai on November. 29-30, 2007.

Our IT Department helps to update knowledge related to computers for the non-

teaching staff if and when required.

College Gymkhana committee arranged Carom, Table Tennis , Cricket Tournaments

for the non-teaching staff members.

For the benefit of our non-teaching staff we have added books in the library that will

give general literature and knowledge in all subjects.

38. Grievance cell and healthy practices of the organisation

GRIEVANCE CELL

This Cell has been set up for prompt redressal of students� grievances.

The Grievance Cell has taken up several key issues covering student grievances

which were aptly redressed. Grievances pertaining to basic facilities provided by

the college were redressed. We have a personal counselor for our student

grievance cell.

The college encourages students, teaching and non-teaching staff to come up

to the grievance cell and state their problems. During the current academic year

some of the problems relating to canteen menu, classrooms etc. was effectively

addressed.

A separate box was provided in which students and teachers could drop their

grievances. This box was opened once a week.

An email id was provided to the students and teachers so that they can get in

direct contact with the Vice Principal ( [email protected])

All the grievances receive are properly maintained in a separate file for future

reference.

HEALTHY PRACTICES

Along with other facilities we give hospital care and bear expenses for students

who meet with contingencies.

We have constituted awards for the �Best Teacher� and �Best library User� to

encourage staff to carry on with the good work.

Our college Staff Colloquim organized a lecture on Stress Management by Mrs.

Milindar, Institute of Management Science & Religion, Mumbai on 29th Sept.

2007 for the teaching and non-teaching staff.

Increasing opportunities for teachers to develop through tie ups with national

and international universities.Our staff have an opportunity to visit international

universities and seminars.

We encourage teachers to participate in workshops seminars at state / national

level. The registration fees and traveling expenses are reimbursed by the college.

Teachers are encouraged to attend faculty development programmes.Two

teachers attended orientation programme and three were sent for refresher courses

in this academic year.. All other teachers extended their help for readjusting the

time table.

Management supports teachers whenever they wish to study further. Necessary

books are also ordered in the library on receipt of requisition from the teacher

concerned.

Duty leave is allowed to teachers for CAP work,

workshops/seminars/conferences etc.

Term end lunch for teaching staff was sponsored by the college.

Non teaching staff and grade IV employees can take loan at lower interest rate

from the society.

Free computer education is given to non- teaching staff.

We encourage non-teaching staff to take up further studies. We give them

various concessions, facilities, adjustment in timings etc. We grant their leave

during their exam period. We also allow them to use our library facilities,

computer facilities and internet facilities if needed.

Whenever there are out station industrial visits, we encourage some of our grade

IV employees to join in and their tickets and stay are sponsored.

We have many awards and scholarships to motivate the students. Annualy we

announce the �Best Library User Award� and the �Best Student Award� .This

year the Best Student Award was received by Ms. Afsha Jiwani from T.Y.Acc.

The college encourages the maximum number of students to participate in the

intercollegiate competitions. We pay necessary registration fees, travel allowances

and refreshment.

We encourage students to participate in various work shops, leadership

programmes of N.S.S. and students� council and the expenses are borne by the

college.

We have our annual publications in which students and staff are encouraged to

contribute.

38. Linkages developed with National and International academic research bodies.

In the yearsgone by we have successfully forayed into several new vistas like the International

Management Training Programme at California which culminated into a joint venture with

St. Mary�s College of Business & Economics, California, and U.S.A. for hosting of exchange

programmes for student & faculty members. Students of Pillai's College of Arts, Commerce and

Science attended a Management Training Program of three weeks (from 22nd February. to 11th

March2008) at the prestigious St. Mary's College of Business and Economics, Moraga,

California USA.

Students were exposed to a wide variety of business practices prevailing in America. They visited

Genentech, Microsoft, Federal Reserve Bank USA, Target: Retail Store, Apple Computers, Intel and

other companies where they learnt about trends in globalization and how US firms pursue global

strategies.There were interactive sessions with the regular American business school students and faculty

drawn from a wide range of background and business interests. They received a certificate of training

from the St. Mary's College of California.

One of our students Ms. Shreya Shukla Visitede St. Marys for the second time as the Peer Advisor and

was felicitaed for her coordination. All the other students received certificated and mementos.Students

were taken for sight seeing to Hollywood Universal Studios, Disneyland, Beverly Hills, Napa Valley and

many other places. Dr. Daphne Pillai, Principal of Pillai�s College of Arts, Commerce & Science,

Dr. R. Chandran, Director of Pillai�s Management Institute and Ms. Nivedita Shreyans, Chief

PRO of the campus accompanied the exchange of students.

Dr. K.M. Vasudevan Pillai, visionary founder and CEO of the Pillai Group of Institutes, was

felicitated by Dr. Vijay Kolhe, Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University for expanding the scope

of education and making a difference at the national and international level.

Our faculty, Prof. Rinkoo Shantnu, H.O.D. Economics received the Best Teacher

Award for her valuable contribution to education. This award was presented to her by

Mahatma Education Society, our parent institution

Ms. Neha Dalal, a student of our college, was Mumbai University Topper in the subject

of Computer Science at the

T.Y.B.Sc. Examination held in March, 2007.

Students of our college attended a Management Training Programme of three week (from

22nd February. to 11th March2008) at the prestigious St. Mary�s College of Business &

Economics, California, and U.S.A.

Our College received the Prestigious Prof. M.V. Chandgadkar Trophy for the Best

College Magazine for 2006-2007 and the cover page was highly appreciated for

Our faculty Prof. Gajanan Wader, H.O.D. Law received the Best Research Paper

Award, at a National Management Conference on �Financial risk, uncertainty and

strategic management: A global perspective� at I.C.S.S.R. Conference Hall, Kalina

University.

Our faculty Prof. Seema Somani, H.O.D.,Commerce presented a paper which was

selected out of 1000 papers received for the International Seminar on

�Issues in International Scenario;Special Economic Zone and Business process

Outsourcing� at University Of Mumbai, kalina campus.The topic of her paper was:

�Special Economic Zones: The Road Ahead�.

Our student Mr. Bhaskar of F.Y.B.M.S. is presently in Europe for participation in an

International exhibition where his art work is displayed.He has won 130 district level,

42 state and five national awards.selected to represent India as child artist at the

SAARC Summit in Sri lanka. He is interested in chess and has been awarded 2058 rating

by AICF.

Our student is the Navi mumbai pioneer of parkour , a physical art of French origin.

this rare art has found home in the life of an enthusuiastic Pillite Mr. Akshat Bhargava

from S.Y.I.T.Our student is one of the two Navi Mumbai Pioneers of this art.

3. To publish academic calendar before the beginning of the academic year.

4. To continue with centralized in-semester examination for B.M.S.,B.Sc. IT, B.Sc. Computer

science and B.Com Accounting & Finance and announce the date at the beginning of the

semester through the academic calendar.

5. To continue with practice of completion of projects in the vacation before starting of the

semester so that regular teaching hours are not affected.

6. To introduce greater innovations in teaching methodology.

7. To introduce more practical sessions and lectures than prescribed by the university for

subjects which are difficult.

8. To put in more efforts to address the deficiencies of weak students.

9. To inform the guardians about the first term results of their wards, who have not fared well

so that the percentage of failures can be reduced.
