A s we all struggle with the COVID-19 outbreak,we are seeing an increasing numberof companies turning to PCN,as they recognise the importance of belonging to a

strong, global network.

For forwarders who handle project cargo and heavy lift, joining an establishednetwork sooner rather than later puts them in the best position for when the outbreakdissipates. Belonging to organisations like PCN could be essential to the survival ofmany companies. Remember, after night comes day and this current situation istemporary – it really is more important than ever to pull together.

Since the outbreak, we are delighted to have further strengthened and expanded ournetwork with the introduction of 2hm Logistics (Slovenia), LBH (Mozambique), EZ Link(Taiwan), Sealand Shipping and Inland Services (Burkina Faso) and most recently wewelcomed FORTRANS (Cameroon).

We’ve also just reached 1000 followers on Twitter! So, thank you to all of you whofollow us there. If Twitter isn’t your thing, you can still keep in touch via our other socialchannels, LinkedIn and our online Blog ... external visitors can even subscribe toreceive regular copies of our Digital Newsletter.Recently, we have seen an increase in online interaction as globally we have movedquickly to social distancing and lockdowns, forcing us all into new habits and patterns.

We have always provided our Members with a dedicated news service. As well asposting on our social media platforms, each article is linked to your profile page in ourMembers Area and your PCN Marketing Website and is distributed to our Press List.ThisPR service provides fantastic promotion and is included in our Annual Fee.And it works! As a direct result of the exposure provided by our News Service,Members have beeninterviewed by mainstream media including CNN, Reuters, BBC, Bloomberg and ITV,providing great free promotion.

Our News Editor, Sam Wilcox says:“We know that working hard on our social mediaplatforms helps build awareness of our Members and enables their company names toreach a wider audience, which (we hope!) might increase their business. We also knowthat our followers are not interested in businesses that publish dry, corporate-style socialmedia posts so we are careful with our content and only post authentic articles worthyof news or that provide some use. Issue 2 of our eZine:Generation Gaps

We are delighted to issue oursecond eZine, which is called

Generation Gaps consisting of helpfulinformation and links.

At PCN we are constantly looking atways to improve experiences withinour network and as such werecognise the significant importancethat learning holds.

For us, training is just one element onour learning compass and we arealways looking at ways to enhancethis section of our membership, tobenefit our network not only now - butby building resilience for the future.

Our first issue was InternationalCultural Body Language and wehope you find both useful.

Upcoming topics will includePresentation & Communication Skillsand Workplace & People Productivity.

Please feel free to print both issues ofour eZine and display them on yourstaff noticeboard, you can also emailaround your office to ensure theyreach all your staff.

We welcome any feedback.

PCN Members from over 30 countries hold Zoom Gatherings

Thank you so much to everyone whotook part in our 2nd Zoom Meeting, theparticipants are not all shown in thefeatured image as we stretched ontoseveral screens! However, you can see ashort clip online.

During the meeting, I mentioned our nextgathering which will be in 2021 in Croatia... where Game of Thrones was filmed. Iasked who had watched the series andmany hands went up! What we are goingthrough now is similar to ‘winter time’ inGame of Thrones – and many successfulpeople do incredibly well in winter.

In fact, 65% of Fortune 1000 companieswere born in recession or depressionincluding Disney, IBM,Microsoft and Apple.Additionally, Isaac Newton discoveredcalculus while in quarantine andShakespeare wrote King Lear while inquarantine! We too are learning new things, like how to use Zoom and how to unmuteour microphones while in a meeting.☺

The message here is that after nightcomes day.The situation we are in istemporary and we will be okay.

The transport and logistics industry is by itsnature a problem solving business andyou are all adept at tackling problemswhen they arise. Communication is soimportant right now (which is whygovernments hold daily news briefings onTV even if no new news) so let’s use thistime to figure out what customers mightrequire during this time.At the same, time, speak to suppliers about what they canoffer you and assess operational aspectsof your business. You can even create apre-start checklist to ensure you’re readyto go as soon as life can return to normal.

We can really make the most of our time –we can think about developing newservices or procedures that we haven’tpreviously had time for.We can ask ourcolleagues for ideas too (morecommunication!) – being productive is agreat feeling at the moment. Justcleaning out my kitchen cupboardsmakes me feel better!

Also, now that we don’t have to spendtime commuting, what are we doing withthe extra hours? I am learning guitarusing Fender’s online lessons (reallystruggling with C chord), I am alsocooking more and practicing yoga for anhour every morning. Sometimes, I donothing but sit in front of the TV and eatterribly – that’s okay too.

We heard updates from many of ourMembers from all over the world and itwas good to hear that all companies arestill operating and coping incredibly well

under the new pressures.

We ended the meeting, with a filmrecommendation from each of the fulltime PCN Head Office staff which you mayfind useful while spending so much timeat home…

Rachel’s recommendation“Free Solo is about a rock climber calledAlex who attempts to conquer the first freesolo climb of Yosemite’s El Capitan's – a900-metre vertical rock face. I am findingit hard to focus on anything on TV at themoment, but this is an intense film that isreally gripping. You will forget EVERYTHINGwhile you are watching it! It has manylayers and the personalities of Alex andSanni make it a captivating watch. It isalso about endurance and not giving up,which may inspire us at the moment.”

Sam’s recommendationI’ll go with The Life Aquatic as it's a heart-warming movie telling the story of aneccentric oceanographer and his crew. With a great cast, it has many laughsthroughout to keep spirits up and remindsus of the human spirit and how we are all'in it together' at this difficult time. And it isalso a homage to Jacques Cousteau!”

Judith’s recommendation“Professor and the Madman:This film is thetrue story of how the first edition of theOxford English was compiled and the largecontribution made by a Dr that was apatient at Broadmoor Criminal LunaticAsylum. It is a strangely heart-warming asthe professor and the patient becomegreat friends and thought provoking as Ihad never imagined what a mammoth taskcreating the first ever English dictionary was.I was surprised that I enjoyed it as I am nota fan of either of the main actors (SeanPenn and Mel Gibson) but they do such agood job I forgot who they were!”

Wendy’s recommendation“I too am finding TV hard to watch at themoment but finding it a nice way tospend some time with my family. With my3 children being different ages, we watchall different types of films from Disney,Comedy and Action. We all thoroughlyenjoyed all the Avenger films, so I wouldrecommend watching these concludingwith Avengers: Endgame.”

It is more important than ever to pulltogether so we also scheduled anotherZoom gathering on Friday 24 April at14:00 (London time). We hope youjoined us, for that one.

Remember, we recently issued twoeZine: Coronavirus Specials, whichcover tips for working from home, mental health and exercise. Please feel free to issue via emailto all your staff.

Topline Express Logistics (TEL) recently worked in close cooperation with Livo Logisticsto deliver 10 units of cranes from Northern China to a jobsite in Amurskaya in Russiaby low-bed trucks.

Martin Zhao, President of TEL, explains: "Normally, March is still the frozen time inNorthern China and Heilongjiang, the border river between China and Russia is frozentoo.A steel-structured floating bridge is set up on the ice every winter by the localauthority and is the only passage for people and traffic to cross the border when theferry service is unavailable. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the border wasshut and only trucks loaded with daily necessities were permitted to cross the border. The supplier delivered the cranes to the warehouse near the border but all border-crossing operations were the consignee's responsibility. The cranes had been sitting inthe warehouse for many days with nobody able to handle the on-carriage to thedestination – until Livo Logistics appeared!

Each crane is nearly 45tn and measures 14.100 x 3.300 x 3.789m.The weight of thecranes was just on the limit of the bridge's capacity. As well as this, the COVID-19restrictions of people's movement had become another challenge as the driverswould not be allowed to return after the delivery of cranes across the border."

TEL monitored the weather forecast and learned a cold storm was coming in the 4thweek of March which certainly would reinforce the ice. So they used their relationshipwith the relevant authorities to assess the capacity of the floating bridge and had thedriving operations approved. As a result of careful organisation and planning, the 10cranes were delivered to the jobsite on the 7th April after overcoming the challengesof the limited bridge capacity and restrictions on people's movement.

Martin concludes: "The right people at the right time and right place have made theimpossible possible!"

Another success story of excellent cooperation between PCN members!

Andrea Manrique at Anker explains: "Wereceived a very special request fromMatecaña International Airport in PereiraCity, Colombia. The area is one of themost touristic and beautiful places in ourcountry and the city is considered as anew platform for our country so theairport has a big project to rebuild andextend their operations to cover moredestinations and generate more air trafficto this Colombian state.

After 29 days of transit time from Izmit andKorfez in Turkey to Buenaventura, theproject cargo arrived in Colombia

consisting of pieces weighing over 16tnand totalling 220cbm.We then performeda fast and dedicated customs process, established the accurate protocols torelease the cargo almost before thevessel's arrival and handled the verydelicate and professional managementof these pieces as Buenaventura is notthe best breakbulk terminal in Colombiaso we ensured careful handling to deliverthe cargo to the final destination."

C.H.Robinson News...

The project logistics team at C.H.Robinson was recently involved inrelocating an electrical transformer froma decommissioned turbine farm to serveas backup to existing transformers on anewer turbine farm.

The scope was to supply the crane andriggers plus the inland trucking from onemesa hilltop to another in Texas.Thetransformer measured 5.08 x 3.35 x 4.30mand weighed 59mtn.The project alsoinvolved two loads of parts andaccessories, weighing 30mtn.

One of the main challengeswas accessing the roads leadingin and out of the two sites. The originsite had a railway line running parallel

with the county road and the shipper had to build up fill dirt on both sides of thetrack to level the ground (as photographed) so the trucks could cross safely aswithout this, the main transformer load would not have cleared the tracks.Therewere also cattle grills along the access roads so metal sheets were laid out to helpprevent damage.

An all-terrain forklift that was transported to both origin and destination sites was usedto load and unload the loose equipment. The transformer loading took place at theorigin on a Friday and was transferred to the county road by the end of the day. Then, the transformer was transported 30 miles to the destination site on Saturday morningand unloaded on Saturday afternoon.

No damage was incurred during the operation and a safe pad-to-pad transfer wascompleted. C.H. Robinson's experts on the ground were able to keep the job movingand assist with any issues that arose, big or small, including a flat tire on the maintruck, inadequate rigging for lifting the transformer, cattle grill hang-ups and railwayline crossings etc. Regular safety meetings were held as each leg was handled, especially during transportation and unloading.Working face-to-face with thecustomer's site manager, crew and truckers, as well as the crane operator and riggers, helped keep everyone safe and on task.

C.H.Robinsontransports 4modules toport by SPMTsThe project logistics specialists atC.H. Robinson recently moved fourlarge module units from themanufacturer to port for a long-termclient as pictured.

The modules varied in size from thelargest at 43.80 x 9.25 x 9.00m and352.82mtn to the smallest at 32.00 x7.65 x 9.10m and 128.15mtn. In total,the cargo weighed in at 965.8mtnand had a volume of 11,606cbm.

Due to the size and weight of themodules, SPMTs were required to getthe units to the terminal.Although thedistance between the manufacturerand the port was only a kilometre, moving such massive equipmenttakes extra time and planning.TheSPMTs needed to be assembled andthe units could only be moved onepiece at a time.To top it off, SPMTsonly travel at half a kilometre perhour so extra patience is required.

C.H. Robinson knew timemanagement and goodcommunication were vital in securinga successful outcome. Exportcustoms clearance had to besecured before the cargo could bereleased by customs and timing wascritical prior to the vessel's arrival.Themodules also had to be moved to thefront of the terminal in order to beloaded onto the ocean vessel by theship's gear.

Communication with the truckingcompany had to take place at leastthree weeks in advance to order therequired SPMTs.There was alsoongoing communication with theship owner, agents and the terminalto ensure the specific position ofeach module alongside the ship fordirect loading to the vessel. Failure toregularly communicate in detail andregularly could have resulted indelays leading to vessel detentions.

C.H. Robinson's knowledgeable andexperienced logistics expertsconstructed a detailed, professionaltransport plan to avoid any surprisesand to ensure everything wentsmoothly. The expertise and attentionto detail paid off when the moduleswere safely loaded onto the oceanvessel ready to set sail.

C.H. Robinson had boots on the ground and supervisedall port operations including the vessel's discharge andthe loading of the specialised truck trailers.C.H. Robinson also customs cleared the cargo andmanaged all border crossing activities prior to the840-mile journey to Acheson.

It took a total of 46 days to safely transport the 2,700cbm(1,000mtn) of cargo from origin to destination, whichalso included 10 containers in two lots from Mexico thatrequired destuffing. All the cargo arrived on time and ingood condition.

Members in Qatar, JSL Global arepleased to share a recently delivery

of 2 x CO2 tanks each measuring 18.0 x4.2 x 3.5m and weighing 45mt.

Director of Projects & 3PL at JSL, JigarShah says: "We hope the PCN family issafe and well and we pray for all who areaffected during these difficult times.

Logistics must continue, even in the timeof COVID-19 and this shipment of 2 tanksis for a European client who is serving to aQatar Power Plant in Umm Al Houl.Thechallenges included:

• The shipment was booked as breakbulk on containerized vessel arriving on26th March at Hamad Port during the ongoing COVID-19 issue.

• Considering the ongoing restrictionsfrom the Qatar government and lessworking times for all private and publicentities, we planned to take theshipment on beams to avoid anyunplanned delays at the port or at theconsignee's site. Our engineering teamchecked technical drawings and wemanaged to source the beams tohandle the width of cargo and madeplans to take direct delivery from thevessel to multi-axle trailer.

• The shipment arrived on late on the Wednesday night and the JSL team managedto get traffic department approvals and escort permissions on Thursday morning.Asthe shipment was urgent for the site, we swiftly arranged the customs inspection andother formalities and took the 2 x CO2 tanks out of the port.

• However, because of the ongoing restrictions and most government entities workingreduced hours, a Thursday night delivery was not possible and as per usualregulations from the Traffic Department, Friday and Saturday are also not feasible. Sowe finally managed to get the permissions and police escort as a special case forSunday and we delivered the cargo at the power plant early on Monday morning.

• But on the early Monday morning at the site, there was heavy wind and less visibilityso the shipment could not be offloaded using cranes. But JSL had planned for theseexceptions from the beginning and managed to offload the cargo using a beams/stools option and helped the client to ground the cargo at the laydown area.

• The JSL Global operations team coordinated this project from different sites, officesand homes because during the COVID-19 pandemic, our main team is working fromhome with just a small operation team present at Hamad Port and the site etc."

"JSL Global would like to thank all concerned parties including Q-Terminal, QatarCustoms and the Qatar Traffic Department who supported this important projectduring this challenging time."

The Express Global Logistics (EXG)team is proud to report anothersuccessfully executed heavy liftproject in India.A 565mt (6,400cbm)cutter suction dredger was movedfrom Kolkata in India to Egypt. The fullyoperational dredger was a challengedue to the short timelines, dredgersize and complex dismantling whichhad to be done offshore right beforethe vessel loading.

Vishvendra Singh at EXG explains:"Transporting the complete 565mtassembled unit to the port ofDiamond Harbour required variouspermissions and a highlyexperienced team of heavy lifthaulers. The dredger was thendismantled offshore into 7 units, ofwhich the heaviest single pieceweighed 318mt and measured 36.4 x12.5 x 11.0m and was loaded ontothe vessel at the port outer-anchorage. Obtaining the specialpermissions for the offshoredismantling at Diamond Harbour wasvery critical to the success of this jobas initially the authorities had deniedthese permissions at both Haldia andKolkata ports.

EXG's complete scope of workincluded transport, customclearance, dismantling and oceanfreight. This job was critical not onlybecause of the abnormal size butalso because of the geographicalchallenges and the water levelswhich had to be closely monitored.Safety of the crew and cargo wasparamount since the operation wasmid-sea and Kolkata Port had highrolling and pitching so the port ofDiamond Harbour was finalised.Dismantling the dredger offshore tookEXG's in-house crew of 8 highlyexperienced professionals and 1Captain who all worked for almost 56man-hours in non-stop shifts."

Extensive pre-planning, flawlesscoordination and spontaneoussolutions resulted in the successfulexecution of this job and EXG isgrateful and proud to have a teamwhich keeps adding such success totheir stories.
