ICAS Assessments is an annual online competition that is designed for recognizing and rewarding academic excellence for high potential students. The assessments are based on the curricula for the relevant year. Students are assessed on their ability to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. To HQVXUH�DQ�HQJDJLQJ�DQG�EHQHƪFLDO�experience for all students, new ICAS assessments are developed annually for each subject in every year level.

Over the past 40 years, more than 20 countries and regions (including Hong Kong and Macau) and 9 million students have participated in ICAS to understand the strengths and weaknesses in their subjects. All students who compete in ICAS English, Mathematics, Science and Writing, receive a general overview of their performance and awards, which can be used to build their academic portfolios. Nearly 400 schools in Hong Kong and Macau actively participate in ICAS Assessments.

CONTENT

Students read a variety of texts which narrate, describe, explain, argue, persuade and review.

These include extracts from picture books, novels, poems, play scripts, transcripts of interviews, letters, diary entries, advertisements, web pages, feature articles, opinion pieces and comic strips. These texts cover a range of topics and may include tables, diagrams, maps and other visual information.

CONTENTICAS English assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. The following aspects of texts are assessed and reported: text comprehension—reading for meaning—in literary and factual texts; the writer’s craft in selecting particular text types, vocabulary and techniques; syntax; and vocabulary. The questions require students to locate, identify, sequence, explain, interpret, analyse and infer information in and about texts.

s Number and arithmetic: Types of numbers, their properties and number operations. This strand has strong links with measures and units, algebra and patterns and chance and data. It also has some links with space and geometry

s Algebra and patterns: Patterns of numbers, relationships between numbers and the use of symbols to stand for unknown or variable numbers

s Chance and data: Mathematical treatment of data and statistics

s Measures and units: Properties of the physical world that can be measured, the units used to measure them and the process of measurement

s Space and geometry: Properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional space.

CONTENTICAS questions require students to make sense of mathematical concepts in everyday situations. Content differs across the papers to ensure they are appropriate for year levels.

Primary 3 to Form 1/ Year 3 to Year 7:

t Calculators are not permitted.

t Formal algebra is not tested. The emphasis is

on pattern, structure and puzzles.

t Formal geometry is not tested (except for Form 1/ Year 7). The emphasis is on spatial skills.

Form 2 to Form 5/ Year 8 to Year 11:

All participating schools will receive:

Starting in 2021, all ICAS assessments will be conducted ONLINE. Besides being organized and registered by the schools��ZH�ZLOO�DOVR�RƩHU�LW�WKrough other testing centres. Test dates for each subject are 2 weeks only with Writing being only 1 week. The schools will choose the date and time to sit the assessment during the assessmentperiod. It must be invigilated by the teachers of the school.

ICAS will be using a new online format to replace the paper format held in schools and testing centres. It provides teachers, parents and students with reports in the areas of ICAS Assessments. All stXGHQWV�ZLOO�UHFHLYH�SULQWHG�FHUWLƪFDWHV�RI�DFKLevement. Students receive a general overview of their performance which can be used to build their academic portfolios.
