Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival 2016

Music is a universal language understood the world over. Music unites people across all borders and reaches their hearts. Music makes people happy. We, in Vienna, know what we talk about because we may proudly call ourselves one of the world’s capitals of music.

As Mayor of a city with a great music tradition and a deep commitment to music, I am very happy that Vienna hosts the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival 2016. I am very glad that so many young musicians meet in Vienna to build bridges at the tenth edition of the festival. The participants and audience will surely welcome this year’s jubilee programme “with great praise” in the sense of the festival’s title.

I would like to wish the Youth Music Festival every success and all participants the very best for their future.

Dialogue among cultures and arts education are two main concerns of UNESCO, being a specialized agency of the United Nations UNESCO is entrusted with the promotion of worldwide collaboration in the fields of education, science and culture as contribution to peace and security.

Music is considered one of the most powerful languages of the world and manages again and again to overcome barriers of all kinds and therewith promotes dialogue among cultures and peace. With 1.300 participants from 12 nations the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival makes also at the 10th jubilee an important contribution to the international musical exchange and promotes art education of teenagers, a key concern of UNESCO.

Eduard StraussWorkshop Lecturer

Eduard Strauss was born in Vienna on 21 April 1955 as the son of the sixth - and to date last - musician in the family (descended from Johann Strauss I.) - conductor Eduard Strauss II. (1910-1969). After primary school, he attended the traditional “Scottish secondary school” (“Schottengymnasium”) in Vienna, whose pupils also included his great great uncles Johann II. and Josef. He completed his schooling there with the university entrance examination in 1973. He went on to study law at Vienna University, and after completing his coursework in 1978 obtained his doctorate on 1 February 1979. He started working in the courts in February of the same year, and enjoyed this work so much that he decided to become a judge. He was accepted for preparatory service, which he successfully concluded in 1982, passing the examination for the office of judge. Since then he has worked as a judge - since 1 January 1997 as a civil law judge at Vienna Higher Regional Court of Appeal. Since 1 January 2006 he is appointed “Senatspräsident” (president of a chamber/a panel). As a child, he often had the opportunity of experiencing for himself the spell that holds the audience at his father‘s concerts. His love of music has always played a significant role in his life. For many years he was an active member (baritone) of the traditional “Vienna Men‘s Choral Association“, to whom many well-known (choral) waltzes by Johann Strauss II. were dedicated, and which also performed them for the first time. One example is the waltz “On the Beautiful Blue Danube”. He has been singing with the outstanding “Schola Cantorum” choral society in Vienna since 1995 (http://www.scholacantorum.at/).For many years, he has devoted himself to the family history in his spare time, to Strauss research and maintaining the Strauss legacy. This involves looking beyond the sentimentality and giving serious consideration to the family‘s history and music. As a result, he also takes a great interest in the activities of the international Strauss societies and is, for example, “honorary patron” of the Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain, and an honorary member of the Swedish, French, German and Czech Strauss Societies. From 1987 to 1991 he was president of the Johann Strauss-Society Vienna. Since 1995 he has been president of the newly formed “Vienna Institute for Strauss Research” whose main goal is the publication of the first scientifically produced catalogue of the works of Johann Strauss II – the “Strauss-Elementar-Verzeichnis (SEV)” and of the works of the other composers of the family (i.e. Johann I., Josef, Eduard I. and Johann III.) – the “Strauss-Allianz-Verzeichnis (SAV)”.He has been married to pharmacist Susanne (née Kienast) since 12 September 1986. The couple had two sons, Michael - born 28 July 1988 died 5 July 2012 - and Thomas - born 24 January 1990. Eduard Strauss is lecturing together with his son Thomas, a student of biology, philosophy and psychology at Vienna University. Thomas wants to become a teacher.

Donizetti in the Riga Cathedral. The choir has cooperated with WDR (West German Broadcasting Corporation) for many years, e.g. with the world premiere of a choral jazz piece, and frequently participates in its Christmas concerts. In 1985, 2002 and 2010 the choir was a finalist in the German Choral Competition; in 1997 it represented Germany at the first International Youth Choir Festival in the cultural capital Thessaloniki. In 2001 the choir was awarded the highly remunerative „Bruno-Kleine-Grant“ for exemplary and lasting youth work.In 2002, within the framework of the AMJ (Working Group for Music and the Young) project „Composers compose for children‘s and youth choirs“, it gave the world premiere of a piece by the Munich composer Max Beckschäfer. In 2004 the choir gave a guest performance in Kaunas in Lithuania as the only amateur ensemble at the „IX Pazaislio Muzikos Festivalis“.In 2006 the choir was selected for the „6th International Youth Chamber-Choir-Meeting Usedom“.In 2007 the choir represented Germany in Aberdeen, Scotland, at the world-largest Youth Culture Festival „WORLD YOUTH FESTIVAL OF ARTS“.2009 the choir represented North Rhine-Westphalia during the German Festival „Schools Make Music“ in Hamburg. The choir also is the Winner of Goldmedal and Special Award for best dramatics at the IV. Jugendsinfonieorchester Heidelberg

The Heidelberg Youth Symphony Orchestra (Jugendsinfonieorchester Heidelberg) was founded in the 1970s by Helmut Bielfeld. Unlike the other school orchestras, the young musicians are required to audition in order to take part. The Youth Symphony Orchestra prepares and performs a concert programme of original symphonic works each school year. It represents the highest level of the Heidelberg Music Schools many children’s and youth orchestras.

In 2008 a selection of string players from the Youth Orchestra, the „Young Chamber Orchestra Heidelberg“ won first prize at the German Competition for Chamber Orchestras under their conductor Thomas Kalb. Since 2009 he has been the Director of the Music School’s Heidelberg Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Thomas KalbConductor

In 1993 Thomas Kalb was appointed General Music Director of the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra which made him the youngest ever Music Director of the Federal Republic of Germany. His extraordinary artistic and organisational abilities earned him two contract renewals in this position.

After eleven years in Heidelberg, Thomas Kalb turned to an exciting career as a guest-conductor. His many duties have included international concert engagements as well as long-term engagements such as an annual alternating production at the Bregenz Festival Theatre (Festspielhaus Bregenz) where he recently conducted ‚Salome‘. As a guest-conductor, Thomas Kalb has regular engagements with Symphony Orchestras and Opera Companies in international capitals such as Antwerp, Bayreuth, Berlin (Komische Oper), Birmingham, Bregenz (Festival Theatre), Bremen, Florence, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Luxemburg, Milan, Mexico City, Munich, Nuremberg, Schwetzingen, San Remo, Seoul and Tokyo. Furthermore, he also conducts numerous radio and television productions in Germany and abroad. Many premieres of both opera and concert strengthened his considerable reputation as a conductor of complicated and multi-layered scores.

Thomas Kalb‘s broad scope of activities has earned him many prizes and awards imcluding the Masefield Scholarship (1981/82), the Richard-Wagner-Scholarship (1986), the First Prize in

the Conducting Competition of the German Council for Music (1987), the Prize of the German Music Publisher‘s Association for „Best Season Program“ (1994/95) and the Prize from the Opernwelt for Best Orchestra Performance in Ligeti‘s ‚Grand Macabre‘ (2001). He was also the music director of a production of Wagner‘s ‚Tannhäuser‘ which was awarded the annual Prize of the Götz-Friedrich-Foundation for „Best Opera Production“ (2004).

After Thomas Kalb won the Conducting competition of the German Council for Music in 1987, nobody less than Sergiu Celibidache was so impressed by his artistic abilities that he had invited him to conduct the Munich Philharmonic on the occasion of the 1989 celebrations of the 40th Anniversary of the German Basic Law at Beethovenhalle Bonn. This event was on air in a live-broadcast of the Second German Broadcasting Corp (ZDF).

Thomas Kalb studied piano, bassoon, conducting, composition and music theory at the State College for Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg. Already at an early age he received performance and conducting engagements at the Hamburg State Opera, the Eutin Summer Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Theatre and the Ulm Theatre. Following his studies, he accepted the position of Principal Conductor at the State Theatre in Munich (1990-1992) and the National Theatre in Mannheim (1992-1994).

In 1996, Thomas Kalb created the music festival ‚Heidelberger Frühling‘. Under his artistic direction, this annual festival developed into an internationally highly acclaimed cultural event within a very few years.

Tübinger Saxophon-Ensemble

The FormationFounded in 1997, the Tübinger Saxophon-Ensemble originated from the saxophone quartet „Saxtett Tübingen“. Since then, the ensemble is committed to fostering the appreciation of the saxophone as a

classical orchestral instrument by playing concerts and to passing on the knowledge about the instrument‘s roots to the next generation of players through teaching.

The SaxophonistsIn the meantime, the ensemble has grown to a size of 15 saxophone players and two percussionists. Most of its members, the majority of whom grew up in southern Germany and Switzerland, were awarded the prestigious „Jugend musiziert“-awards and played in various national and international orchestras. The repertoire includes arrangements of compositions from all music eras as well as original works written for this specific instrumentation. Many pieces were arranged by members of the ensemble, other arrangements are from the arranger and clarinetist Thomas Krause. The musicians almost exclusively play on old Buescher saxophones, which are modelled after the original design by Adolphe Sax.

Activities / AwardsIn the summer months, the ensemble regularly embarks on tours around the world, filling concert halls abroad with its distinguished sound. This sound, however, offers little resemblance with the „jazzy“ tone the saxophone is well-known for. Stuttgart‘s newspaper „Stuttgarter Zeitung“ for example marvels at the ensemble‘s „orchestral radiance“. And the „Schwäbische Tagblatt“ reads „regarding the quality and the body of the tone this ensemble is in no way inferior to a full-size symphonic orchestra“. But the ensemble also knows how to deliver in front of professional juries. At the Deutscher Orchesterwettbewerb (German Music Competition) in 2004 the ensemble won the first prize on the state level and the second prize on the federal level. In August 2006, the ensemble went on tour through Southern Africa and gave much-noticed concerts in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Sambia. At the International Music Competition „Tygerberg Fanfare“ in Cape Town, South Africa, the ensemble was awarded the first prize with distinction. The ensemble also hosted a total of three Workshops in Namibia and Sambia. The attendance was overwhelming and the participant‘s feedback extremely positive.Asia, New Zealand, and Australia were the destinations of the long-distance tour in 2009. The highlights: a performance in the world famous Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House, and the Gold Medal with distinction that the ensemble was awarded by the Jury of the 20th Australian International Music Festival. In spring 2014, the ensemble toured the East Coast of the United States of America including performances at Carnegie Hall, New York, Kennedy Center, Washington, and Florida State University amongst others. Both at the New York and Washington International Music Festivals the ensemble was awarded „Showcase“ by renowned international juries. Based

50

on the great success of this concert tour, the ensemble was invited back to the USA in the fall of 2014 to perform at the Peréz Art Museum in Miami.

Harry D. BathConductor

Harry D. Bath was born in 1947 in Portsmouth, England. After successful studies at the prestigious „Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall“ in London majoring in oboe, he came to Germany as a military

musician and stayed there after finishing his military service. He took the conducting exam (ARCM) at the „Royal College of Music“ in London. He served the municipal band in Kirchheim unter Teck as musical director from 1974 until his retirement in 2012.In 1986 he was appointed artistic director of the State Wind Orchestra of Baden-Württemberg. During his more than 10 years of work there the orchestra gained an international reputation.Numerous successes at competitions on state, federal and international levels, as well as recordings well recognized in professional circles have confirmed his reputation as a skilled and sought after conductor in the field of symphonic wind music. This is also reflected by his numerous engagements as guest conductor of renowned orchestras (including Eifflermusiktage, State Wind Orchestra Hesse, Southwest Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band Württembergisches Allgau, etc.), the works of renowned composers (such as Rolf Rudin and Paul Kühmstedt) dedicated to him, as well as his many collaborations with outstanding soloists (S. Mead, A. Mangelsdorf, Ack van Royen, The Rascher saxophone Quartet, and many more). In 2005 he took over the conductorship of the Tübinger Saxophon-Ensemble.

OJPA ASPIRANTES - Alicante’s Youth Orchestra

The Orquesta de Aspirantes de la Provincia de Alicante was founded in October 2012 in order to disclose and encourage the infant musical talents in the Alicante region and nurture the OJPA, the Alicante´s Youth Orchestra. Conducted by his Chief Conductor Juan Miguel Antón García the orchestra is currently integrated by musicians aged between eight and fourteen years and belonging to the music schools

and conservatories throughout the region of Alicante.

The Orchestra is formed by 70 young passionate musicians who passed the annual audition held in October each year at Alicante´s main auditorium, ADDA.

Teaching and passing on expertise in orchestra’s performing technique and rehearsal, discipline, as well as performing the standard symphonic repertoire adapted to each one of the different instrumentalist´s levels are some of the goals that allow us to provide the older ensemble, the Youth Orchestra, with new and truly formed members. Both orchestras, the infants and the youth orchestra, work together in order to obtain similar goals at completely different ages and performing levels.

The infant musicians take part in all the events that the Youth Orchestra organizes, such as Master Classes, joint rehearsals. Besides, the orchestra offers frequent possibilities to some of its members to play solo concertos with the Youth Orchestra, being initiated as soloists among their own fellows.

The Orquesta de Aspirantes made its debut concert in June 2013 in the ADDA, with a full audience of over 1.300 seats. In its first concert, some of the members of the older Youth Orchestra also participated in the event, serving as a guide and tutelage of the younger musicians.

During the 2013-2014 season the Orquesta de Aspirantes OJPA performed six different concerts throughout Alicante´s province. They also took part, together with the older Youth Orchestra, in the 2nd Alicante’s International Youth Orchestras Festival (FIJO).

In the 2014/2015 season the orchestra offered ten concerts through different halls, like Auditori de Teulada-Moraira, Auditori de la Mediterrània de La Nucía, Teatro Wagner de Aspe, Teatro Castelar de Elda, Teatro Cervantes de Sax and ADDA itself.

Last March the orchestra also held several events at Alicante’s Hospital General Universitario for children who are treated there. Specially commented was the concert for the Pediatric Oncology Department, designed through the project entitled “La cultura y el deporte se ponen la bata y el fonendo” commanded by the Hospital’s Pediatric Department. Besides

63

those concerts, the Infant Orchestra also developed several music workshops at the Hospital´s School for those children who mainly live indoors at the Hospital, getting them to know, practice and get acquaintance with all the orchestral instruments. The other event was a benefit concert to obtain economic aid for the Asociación de Enfermos Mentales de Elda-Petrer y comarca.

In July 2015 the Infant Orchestra of the OJPA was invited to a Tour through different European cities together with their older Youth Orchestra, OJPA, in which they played in the prestigious Summa Cum Laude International, Youth Music Festival in Vienna, where the older Youth Orchestra OJPA was awarded, with Excellent Success, First position in the category of symphonic orchestras.

For the second consecutive year they performed together with the older Youth Orchestra in the 3rd Alicante’s International Youth Orchestras Festival (FIJO) celebrated last August 2015.

In July 2016 the Orquesta de Aspirantes de la Provincia de Alicante will participate at the Vienna Festival Summa Cum Laude, where it will play at the Musikverein´s Golden Hall and MuTh Hall among other venues.
