PARIS — Earlier timing for the Mode City innerwear and swimwear salon in July, plus a new Paris Design Week ini-tiative in September by the organizers of Maison & Objet, are among key developments in the City of Light.

Pierre Gendrot, coordinator of Paris Capitale de la Création, or Paris Capital of Creativity, which groups 19 salons, said September will be particularly vibrant, with events spread throughout the month. Scheduled for Sept. 9 to 13, Paris design fair Maison & Objet is now set to run a few days after the city’s fashion trade shows in early September, while eyewear salon Silmo will run Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, coinciding with the start of the spring women’s ready-to-wear shows.

Messe Frankfurt France will introduce the Apparel Sourcing trade show, launched in New York last year, to run concurrently with the Paris edition of Texworld, Sept. 19 to 22.

“This is a natural development for Texworld, where the range offered by clothing manufacturers, particularly at the September shows, was increasing substantially,” said Michael Scherpe, president of Messe Frankfurt France.

The Apparel Sourcing show will be held in hall one of the Le Bourget exhibition center, with Texworld lo-cated in hall two. The show should run concurrently with Texworld on a semiannual basis starting in 2012.

Prêt à Porter Paris is also introducing a flurry of chang-es in September, in what represents its biggest overhaul in five years, with the aim of making the show easier to navi-gate for buyers and to provide more services for exhibi-tors. The number of sections is being narrowed to eight from 11, with accessories grouped on one floor and rtw on another. This responds to the shifting needs of brands and growing competition from rival trade show Who’s Next, which takes place simultaneously at the Porte de Versailles exhibition center from Sept. 3 to 6.

Comexposium, which owns 50 percent of WSN Développement, the company that runs the Who’s Next and Première Classe shows, last week acquired Sodes, the company in charge of Prêt à Porter Paris, Atmosphère, The Box, LivingRoom and The Train. This effectively places Prêt à Porter Paris and Who’s Next under one umbrella, a development greeted by Muriel Piaser, exhibitions director for Prêt à Porter Paris. “This is excellent news,” she said.

Xavier Clergerie, managing director of Who’s Next and Première Classe, is expected to take over manage-ment of the Sodes trade shows. Piaser said her new role was yet to be defined, but she looked forward to working with Clergerie. The trade shows will go ahead as previ-ously planned in September and changes resulting from

the buyout will be felt starting in 2012, Piaser added. The changes at Prêt à Porter are designed to cater

to contemporary brands identified as the “heart of the market,” said Piaser, such as Devernois, Lauren Vidal, René Derhy, Alain Weiz and Didier Parakian.

“The purchasing power of consumers between age 40 and 50 is as great as that of teenagers, and these are the target customers of Prêt à Porter,” she said. “In the past, exhibitors at Prêt à Porter included both the heart of the market and designers, whereas nowadays almost 80 percent of designers have moved to showing during fashion week, so Prêt à Porter is focusing more on this contemporary and midrange offer.”

Organizers of the city’s fashion and accessories sa-lons listed high raw material costs and the strong euro, which could penalize the export business of young brands, among the key challenges for designers, with slight price increases inevitable.

“We feel that the American market is having a tough time investing in European creativity,” said Sylvie Pourrat, managing director of the Premiere Classe ac-cessories salon, adding that despite the sky-high prices on precious metals, costume jewelry designers continue to gravitate toward more high-end lines.

New projects lined up for the salon’s Nomad Lounge trend area will include an exhibition of creations by 12 Austrian accessories designers.

Richard Martin, deputy director and artistic direc-tor of Paris jewelry salon Eclat de Mode-Bijorhca, said the event’s Gold by Eclat de Mode gold jewelry section, introduced last year with around 20 designers, will ex-pand to around 35 at the upcoming edition, Sept. 2 to 5. The salon’s Elements Collections jewelry parts segment will move to the ground floor with a separate entrance. Organizers have planned a “Moulin Rouge” exhibition showcasing iconic dresses and accessories worn in the show, as well as costume jewelry designs from the Moulin Rouge accessories line by On Aura Tout Vu.

Philippe Pasquet, chief executive officer of Paris tex-tiles salon Première Vision, set for Sept. 20 to 22, said fiber shortages and inflamed prices ended up having

a positive effect on business for the salon in January, with retailers making decisions earlier. Prices have sta-bilized since, he said, but the situation is still volatile.

Having recently visited clients in Japan, Pasquet was among several organizers commenting on the admirable spirit of Japanese exhibitors, who have applied a busi-ness-as-usual-approach following the country’s devas-tating earthquake and tsunami in March.

“They need the international market more than ever,” he said.

Pourrat said she was amazed to see that Japan’s re-cent tragedy has not yet impacted sales for Premiere Classe’s accessories designers, some of whom generate 95 percent of their sales there.

“The Japanese are big consumers of creativity,” she said.Mode City’s earlier show slot in July has already

gotten the thumbs-up from retailers and brands, with several big names returning to the event, including Gottex and Gerhard Roesch, according to show man-ager Séverine Marchesi. Citing strong sales from the current spring season — which has been boosted by the recent good weather in Europe — Marchesi said busi-ness is picking up for the industry and all of the major American retailers have confirmed their attendance at the show, which starts its three-day run on July 9.

Along with neighboring textiles show Interfilière Paris, Mode City will stage its first Ultra Lingerie catwalk show in the center of the city, at the Pavilion Cambon on Place Vendôme. The event will showcase 70 designs by weaver-designer pairings. Around 600 buyers have been invited.

Responding to rising demand from brands for creative textiles, Interfilière will inaugurate The Exclusives, a private zone presenting cutting-edge designs by 25 ex-hibitors. Only customers invited by participating mills will be allowed access.

“The space will also allow mills to test out cre-ative product on designers,” said exhibition manager Charlotte Giraudineau.

Among new design initiatives, Maison & Objet organizer SAFI in September will inaugurate Paris Design Week, which kicks off Sept. 12 at the end of Maison & Objet. For the seven-day event, which falls under the Paris Capitale de la Création banner, a range of exhibitions and events will take place in stores, galleries, design showrooms and restaurants around the city, spanning design, architecture, fashion, arts and culture, food and technology.

Who’s Next, which runs Sept. 3 to 6 at the Porte de Versailles, will host an exhibition of Malaysian designers. The salon also plans a collaboration with the Federation of Lace and Embroidery that will match eight lace makers with designers from Premiere Classe and Who’s Next to de-velop 20 creations.

TOKYO — As Japan begins the long pro-cess of recovery and rebuilding after the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck March 11, members of its fashion industry are thinking of ways to lure back international buyers, even while some major events are still being canceled.

The Japan National Tourism Organization reported a 50.3 percent drop in the number of foreign visitors to Japan in March, compared to the same month last year. A spokesman for the JNTO said the organization isn’t making any predic-tions as to when or by how much these numbers will begin to increase again, but many in the industry are trying to do what they can to spur a revival.

Tomonori Matsui, director of the RoomsLink trade shows that generally run concurrently with Japan Fashion Week, said only 10 non-Japanese retailers sent buyers for the April edition of the event, compared to 37 the season before. But Matsui is concentrating his efforts on increasing both the number of international buyers and international brands for the next installment, which is scheduled for mid-October.

“I want to work hard on the p.r. to get more brands to participate,” Matsui said. “Since the event is a mix of trade and fashion shows and happens during Japan Fashion Week, it should be more international. If we can’t increase the number of international brands, it will

become a domestic event, so I’d like about half of the brands to be international ones.”

Matsui said in April, RoomsLink featured 60 brands, all Japanese, after 15 European brands pulled out following the natural disaster and amid fears concerning problems at a nuclear power plant. But for October, he expects 70 local brands, and hopes to get about 40 to 50 international ones, including a label from Seoul that is already confi rmed. He expects attendees to number more than 8,000.

Mutsuko Tatsukami, an organizer of the textile show JFW Japan Creation, said he has also seen international exhibitors pull out of its spring installment. There were 61 companies slated to participate in the most recent fair, which took place this month, after 10 non-Japanese fi rms canceled.

“We had a few cancellations from domestic brands, as well, but actually most [Japanese] brands told us that they wanted to do what they can to participate,” Tatsukami said.

For the next installment in October at Tokyo Big Sight, Tatsukami expects about 200 companies to exhibit at Japan Creation, although how many of those will be from outside the nation remains to be seen.

“We want international buyers and exhibitors to participate, but right now I can’t really say what will happen,” Tatsukami said. “We want to [give the message] that it’s OK to come to Japan, and we’ve had people from overseas ex-press interest, so hopefully [the event in] October will go as planned.”

Tatsukami said that last October, the event attracted 23,503 visitors, includ-ing about 200 from outside of Japan. She hopes to have about the same number again this year.

“Up until last year, the number of attend-ees from overseas had been increasing, so we’d like that pattern to continue,” she said.

Despite an overall positive outlook, some fairs are being forced to make cut-backs. Frontier, a casual clothing show, has been postponed indefi nitely.

“We planned on holding a small fair in June, but we canceled it because many participating companies are based or have factories in Sendai [where the tsu-nami struck], and therefore won’t be able to produce fall products on time,” said organizer Tadashi Yoshioka.

Yoshioka hopes to be able to hold the next edition of Frontier in September,

but so far no concrete plans have been made. As for attracting foreign buyers, he remains skeptical.

“I think it will be diffi cult. It’s a com-plicated situation,” Yoshioka said. “I think there will be two or three companies that come, but I think the overall order totals from international buyers will decrease.”

Other changes on the horizon include cutting Japan Creation down to a yearly, rather than biyearly, show starting in 2012, while at the same time adding a new JFW-associated textile fair, called JFW Premium Textile Japan. This event will make its debut in May alongside Japan Creation, and will also be held from Oct. 12 to 14 at Tokyo Big Sight. Organizers plan to conduct the event, which Tatsukami says will be more of a business conference than a large-scale trade show, twice a year.

Japanese Fairs Aim for Recovery

China Turns to InnovationBy KATHLEEN E. MCLAUGHLIN

BEIJING — E-commerce could make a big splash in the second half of this year’s fashion, textile and accesso-ries trade shows in greater China, organizers said, with plans to broaden the on-site use of trade platforms tak-ing advantage of the Internet.

Several trade shows plan to integrate e-commerce plat-forms into their overall show design, offering customers opportunities to link with suppliers online even as they meet in person.

E-commerce was put into the mix at the Dalian International Garment & Textile Fair last year, and a mar-keting manager with the show said he expects it to grow in use this year. The Dalian show has connected with online trade platform giants Alibaba and Taobao. Global Sources, which runs its own series of trade shows across China and Hong Kong, has a popular online trading platform that predated much of its trade show business.

“Visitors and exhibitors registered actively last year, and we will continue to use the service this year,” said Gao Liying, head of the planning department for the Dalian textile fair, which runs Sept. 3 to 6 in the north-ern port city. “The methods of trade are changing and always becoming more convenient.”

But that’s not to say online commerce will replace the value of face-to-face meetings, handling products and making deals in China and Hong Kong. Rather, organiz-ers said they hope adding the Internet will simply en-hance and augment the trade show experience, cement-ing long-term relationships between buyers and sellers.

On another note, several fair organizers said they ex-pect vendor and visitor numbers this summer and fall to keep pace with last year, despite rising prices.

China is facing new pressures from higher minimum wages and continually rising costs of raw materials. The

ongoing push has forced consumer prices up, with a 5.4 percent rise in the consumer price index in March over the same month last year — the highest pace in nearly two years. Despite price pressures, trade show organizers are upbeat about business prospects.

They said companies are bringing in fresh ideas and developing new fabrics and other products, hoping to move up the value chain as China eases away from being the land of cheap labor and low-cost manufactured goods. Buyers are prepared for higher prices, but it’s unclear how costs will affect turnout and the number of deals made at shows during the second half of this year.

“I don’t think (price increases) will have a major ef-fect,” said Lin Jing, exhibition project manager for the China Guangzhou International Fashion Exhibition, set for Sept. 8 to 10. “The price of everything is rising, as production costs have increased. So it’s normal that the price of products will increase, as well.”

Besides business concerns, trade shows are on mes-sage about showcasing vendors with creative wares, new products and innovative techniques. The message un-derscores China’s greater overall push to move from a manufacturing-based economy to an innovation society. The government has undertaken a major push to reward fi rms that innovate and create, and potentially drive out those only interested in making low-end products for low wages. The results may be seen in this year’s shows.

The Shenzhen International Trade Fair for Apparel Fabrics & Accessories, running July 7 to 9, expects a slight increase from last year’s 760 vendors. Shen Yongfang, sec-retary of the Shenzhen Municipal Garment Association, said the group’s fair this summer will focus on innovation and on showcasing China’s culture through products.

“We predict that this year’s trade show will produce relatively big developments in areas of designing, cre-ation, information, service and international purchasing and cooperation,” said Shen.

MiLAn — After a season filled with new initiatives and efforts to increase atten-dance, fair organizers in italy still aim to attract foreign visitors while they ride out an unhurried economic recovery.

Mauro Muzzolon, director of leather goods expo Mipel, said there has been a decisive upturn in the industry, espe-cially regarding bags and small leather goods, though figures have not yet re-turned to pre-crisis levels.

“What really continues to puzzle us, though, is the italian market, which is at a standstill due to low prices,” said Muzzolon, noting that makers are having difficulty earning profits. “We’re seeing new buyers from the Ukraine and China — the foreign market is indispensable.”

Mipel, along with the other three Milan-based accessories fairs — Mido, Mifur and Micam — conducted a joint communica-tions campaign called “All Accessories” in February to promote the salons abroad, particularly in the U.s., russia and Japan.

Muzzolon said the initial trial “was an all-around positive experience,” and that “these synergies will surely continue to be an important weapon.”

Marco serioli, executive director of Fiera Milano rassegne, which organizes several trade shows including Mi Milano Prêt-à-Porter, said, “Based on our survey, exhibitors provided positive feedback and indicated that there is a pickup in orders.”

“We’re seeing positive signs in export data, especially for Made in italy prod-

ucts,” echoed raffaello napoleone, chief executive officer of Pitti immagine, which organizes the Pitti shows — Uomo, W, Bimbo, Filati and Fragranze in Florence — as well as ready-to-wear and accesso-ries fairs Modaprima, touch, neoZone and Cloudnine in Milan.

napoleone also emphasized the im-portance of foreign participation, citing a new initiative called “Guest nation,” which involves promotional activities in a specific location deemed strategic for the

Florence trade shows.“this year, we have

chosen são Paulo to try to increase attendance from Brazil, which has been showing encour-aging signs,” he said.

Although the dol-lar’s fluctuations con-tinue to cause concern, fair organizers are not worried. serioli be-lieves the intrinsic value of Made in italy products is enough to cushion the impact of the weakened greenback.

“Additionally, italian manufac-turers are always attentive to eco-nomic trends and therefore tend to offer competitive prices,” napoleone added. “Despite the instability of the dollar, the U.s. is becoming more im-portant to us.”

the upcoming June edition of Pitti will be headlined by rodarte and Band of Outsiders, both of which hail from California.

Pitti is also in the process of ramp-ing up its online presence. After a suc-cessful pilot edition in January, the organizer, alongside FieraDigitale, will officially launch its online portal, e-Pitti, essentially putting the entire fair on the Web, with an investment of around 1.5 million euros, or $2.2 million at current exchange. Photos and videos of the more than 1,600 col-lections from the men’s, women’s and children’s divisions of the show will be available online, in addition to the new Marketplace section where registered buyers will be able to place orders.

Also bowing in June is a re-vamped home page and a Web site for Fondazione Pitti Discovery, the group that organizes cultural events surrounding the semiannual fairs.

White, which runs from June 19 to 21 for men and sept. 24 to 26 for women, is also investing heavily in the internet, according to the show’s president, Massimiliano Bizzi.

“WOW [White on Web] is an ex-tremely important project for us — it’s our community, and right now, it’s a priority for us,” he said, adding that the recently launched portal gets

about 3,000 visits per day.As has been the trend for a number of

seasons, trade shows are turning to inno-vative events to raise their profiles.

Bizzi indicated that, though it is too early to reveal details, there will be two important events in collaboration with the municipality of Milan because “it is important for the city to breathe fashion.” Last February, White hosted a fashion show in a moving subway train for young designer Alessandra Marchi.

Mi Milano’s ongoing Collisions program will once again pair young designers with historic italian textile companies, and its hothouse space remains dedicated to emerging talents, an initiative particularly appreciated by foreign buyers, according to serioli. Additionally, for the first time, beauty show intercharm has aligned its dates with Mi Milano and will take place in the same venue. it’s another example of fairs seeking out synergies.

Joining the young designer competi-tion fray, jewelry fair organizer Vicenzaoro will hold a contest for designers under age 30 in collaboration with the Politecnico University of Milan. Vicenzaoro Choice will take place from sept. 10 to 14, follow-ing About J, a smaller sister event dedicat-ed to higher-end collections running from sept. 8 to 10, both in Vicenza.

Pitti will launch Dress Like a Man, described as a “performance event that provides a unique interpretation of the new contemporary classic look.” it will take place on the evening of June 14 and is being curated by Olivier saillard, the recently appointed director of Paris-based fashion museum Musée Galliera.

Mipel will celebrate its 100th edition this september with a book dedicated to the bag fair’s 50 years of history.

“this is a celebratory moment for us, a chance to look back on what we’ve accom-plished but also as a stimulus to go for-ward,” said Muzzolon.

Finally, just before the ready-to-wear collections get going in Milan, the Milano Unica textiles fair runs from sept. 13 to 15 at Fieramilanocity.

BERLIN — It’s going to be “the more the merrier” on the German trade show scene this season, as new events and exhibitors join the already extensive lineup, with positive market conditions in Germany adding to the momentum.

German retailers are coming off a solid year, with the German Apparel Retailers Association reporting a 3 to 4 percent sales gain in 2010 and the German Retail Federation projecting “ro-bust development in 2011.” Consumer sentiment remains high, despite a slight dampen-ing of economic and income expectations due to global events, according to research firm GfK’s April consumer cli-mate study. “However, the pro-pensity to buy has maintained its good level,” GfK said.

Germany is coming into sharper focus for nondomes-tic brands eager to get a piece of the action in the European Community’s largest market. Many German manufacturers have finished their most suc-cessful years ever, supported by expanding international sales, while the country’s re-tailers, known for sticking to the tried-and-true, are exhib-iting heightened interest in emerging brands.

The hub remains Berlin, which drew about 90,000 trade visitors in January. The spring 2012 season starts July 3 with intimates show 5ele-ments.berlin, which is adding runway shows to its stands.

However, it’s streetwear and contemporary fash-ion that’s put Berlin on the trade show map, with Bread & Butter, Premium and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin runway shows the es-tablished triumvirate. B&B chief Karl-Heinz Müller said the show is booked to capacity, with many new names on the fair’s 600-exhibitor roster.

As B&B prepares to cele-brate its 10th anniversary this July, Müller wants to open the doors to nonprofessionals.

“I think B&B should be more connected with Berlin, and I’d like to have about 5,000 to 6,000 people from outside the industry join in our after-hours get-togethers and parties,” he said. “It’s about touching the style of Berlin, plus it’s a touch of B-to-C business.”

To give trade visitors a bet-ter time in Berlin, he’s also try-ing to convince fellow retailers in the Hackescher Market area, where his store 14 oz. is located, to stay open until midnight dur-ing B&B’s run, July 6 to 8.

Premium was also booked earlier than ever and is packed with about 1,000 brands — though a new space might come soon, depending on permission from the city. The new Atelier area that opened last season has a cel-ebrated new tenant: Armani Jeans. The more offbeat Seek section, with brands like Libertine-Libertine, Surface to Air and Opening Ceremony, is “exploding,” said show co-founder and co-director Anita

Tillmann, noting Premium Men is growing and getting more progressive in its mix.

Fresh to the German capital is Capsule, the contemporary fashion platform that hosts shows in New York, Las Vegas and Paris. Capsule expects to present about 70 collections at its debut in the former German mint, including Naked & Famous Denim, SLVDR, Won Hundred and Wood Wood. Capsule is coming to Berlin at the urging of many of the show’s exhibitors, who want to target the German market, ex-plained co-director Edina Sultanik.

The avant-garde Projekt Galerie Showroom will occupy new quarters in the side wing of the Mint, while it’s back to the old Stasi headquarters for Bright, which features streetwear and skateboarding.

Greenshowroom returns to the Hotel Adlon for its salon show of green goods, but now under the direction of Messe Frankfurt. Currently being restructured and in negotiations with new backers, TheKey.to hopes to open at a new venue in July at the Kindl Brewery near Bread & Butter. The fifth edition of Lavera

Showfloor, with 12 green runway shows, moves to the landmark Kosmos cinema.

In Düsseldorf, CPD Signatures is pol-ishing its new format, again expecting about 450 exhibitors. Eastern European buyers are a key audience for CPD.

The mainly “writing events” Supreme by Munichfashion.company and Premium Order Düsseldorf both run July 23 to 26, though Premium’s Tillmann noted Munich is “getting especially important for us. We’ll have 350 to 400 exhibitors there, and are opening a separate acces-sories tent.”

Also in Munich in mid-August: Supreme by Munichfashion.company, In Fashion Munich, Premium Order Munich and MunichFashion.WoMen.
