Courbet challenged the academic idea of art and addressed social issues in his work. By making the peasants, the poor and the rural bourgeoisie, his paintings were considered vulgar, yet he became a celebrity as the public became more interested in his works.

Oil on canvas1863

Another controverisal painting by Manet. The state of nudity or undress by the woman was deemed vulgar. Donning only the orchid in her hair, the slippers and the bracelet beside a fully clothed woman only made her more naked. Also, the fact that she is looking directly at the viewer, unabashed and lacking the modesty that women should have.

Although Luna was considered a Realistic painter, this particular painting is dubbed as Expressionistic because it translated into the canvass his thoughts and feelings about war and destruction.
