Supporting the Collectors , the Mineral ,the Fossils and the Gem Industry for 21years : 2006 ,we enter to 21rst year of circulation of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWSON MINERALS in 22 Countries.

It is very important to send you this issue as it is the first issue of the Vol. 21 ,one vol. every year ,21 volumes ,21 years. How fast time flies ! When I first thought to put in circulation a bilingualMineralogical Newsletter back in January 1986 , I could never imagine that things would flow onwish. It was a risk , but life without risk has no sense. We all , or almost all , know this. After thefirst year , ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS organized and sponsored the 1rstInternational Mineral, Gem and Fossil Show for Collectors in Hellas and also started to be the linkbetween Hellenic speaking and English speaking collectors worldwide. Also ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS founded the International Association of Collectors of Slag Minerals (IACSM)and continued to spread news and information in a short and sweet way in black and white untilthe year 2000 when turned into color. You will not believe it but within 20 years of circulation ofORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS and 20 GeMin Exhibitions in Athens ,Greece , therewas a “Mineral, Gem and Fossil Fever” in Greece and now GeMin show apart being the mostcomfortable show in Europe , it is a show with substantial sales potential not only for DomesticCompanies but also for International Companies. Our cooperation with other publications , withother International show Organizers has resulted in a further promotion of Mineral, Gem andFossil activities. ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS is the link of Mineral ,Gem and FossilCollectors of Southeastern Europe with their colleagues in other areas and GeMin Exhibition is theMineral, Gem and Fossil Gate to the Market of Southeastern Europe for all these Mineral, Gem andFossil Companies which wish to promote their products , increase sales and expand businessactivities in the market of Southeastern Europe.. This year we celebrate in Athens 20 years ofGeMin shows. It was a long way to Ithaca ,we took and we gave and still we have not reached inIthaca, but this is the name of the game in life : You give and you take ! Be with us and we willnavigate toward Ithaca in the future. We have and we can give you more and leave to the nextgenerations of people , a way to reach people in this area through our fantastic hobby ,ourinvolvement with Minerals ,Gems, Fossils, Crystals and all those treasures of the Earth. Wepromise that we will be consistent for the next years as we were so far ,but we need you all , wethank you all and we will be glad to see you all on 25-26 November 2006 in Athens.

Teofilo Otoni , Minas Gerais , Brazil : Some gemstones and informationBy

Dimitris G. Minatidis , M.Sc. ,AGCCGeologist-geochemist

70 Queen Sofia Avenue , Piraeus ,EL-185 32 , [email protected]

Téofilo Otoni is a city in northeast Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The population of the municipality was253,679 in 2005 and the area is 3,253.4 km².It lies at an elevation of 319 meters on the Todos os Santos River, a tributary of the Mucuri. Situatedon the Rio-Bahia Interstate Highway BR 116, it is 130 km. north of the regional center, GovernadorValadares, on the Doce River, and 664 km north of the state capital, Belo Horizonte. It was given citystatus in 1878.Teófilo Otoni is a trade centre for an agricultural hinterland in which livestock raising is of someimportance. The city has small-scale manufacturing and food-processing plants. Poor soils foragriculture and lack of industry have made Teófilo Otoni a major source of immigration to otherregions of Brazil and to the United States.Nationally and internationally it rivals Governador Valadares as the gem capital of Brazil. Extensivemining and gem trading for aquamarines, topaz, brazilianite, and various forms of quartz take placethere. A Gem and Mineral Show (Feira Internacional de Pedras Preciosas (FIPP), is held here everyyear, attracting international buyers. The fair provides the opportunity to buy both rough and cutstones directly from local producers, miners and cutters. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org’

GeMin , Your Mineral ,Gem , Jewellery and Fossil Exhibition inSoutheastern Europe.

- Most of major European Mineral, Gem and Fossil shows take place in Western Europe . GeMinshow in Athens ,Hellas , is the unique event of its kind which covers the Mineral, Gem , Jewelleryand Fossil activities , Industry and Earth Sciences and fills the gap in Southeastern Europe.ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS is widely known that sponsors the GeMin showsince 1987 , but our publication has and will continue to support within its possibilities any effort onEarth Sciences and especially on Minerals, Gems and Fossils. We always believe that this is the onlyway to enhance the Sciences of Mineralogy , Paleontology in the form of hobby as well as enhancethe Gem Industry. It is the least acknowledgement to all those people who look for minerals ,gemsand fossils in the remote areas of the Earth and bring them in front of Collectors at various Shows. Itis the least acknowledgement to all those suppliers of Gem Rough and superb Mineral and FossilSpecimens from around the World. One of the most striking features of Athens GeMin show is its substantial sales potential as Hellasis one of major tourist destinations in the World and apart from collectors in Hellas ,thousands ofcollectors come as tourists and buy minerals, gems and fossils. Companies have realized this and sothere is an inflow of material every year in the Market here.- GeMin show is the most comfortable show in Europe as the organizing Committee takes care forthe comfortness both the Exhibitors and the visitors. A great deal of superb specimens ,gems andfossils are expected to be on display during 20th GeMin 2006 to be held in Athens on 25-26November 2006 and we invite all to be present in this big event in Athens either as Exhibitors or asVisitors.-Another parameter which is seriously taken into consideration by the Organizing Committee ofGeMin is the junior section : The future are the pupils ,the students and in general the youngergeneration of collectors ,so schools are urged and invited to visit GeMin ,so young people have thechance to come across with mineral specimens, gems and fossils but also with educational productson Earth Sciences.GeMin Exhibition and ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS was present with their standboth in Tucson 2005 and Las Vegas 2005 (Mirage Hotel) sending an Invitation to the InternationalMineral, Gem and Fossil Community through these two major North American Shows that GeMinand ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS are all they need to expand business activitiesin the Market of Southeastern Europe centered on Athens ,Hellas. Peridot (Pear-ih-doe) is the gemological name for the mineral Olivine ([Mg, Fe]2SiO4). Gem-gradeperidot is usually close to the Mg end-member (12-15% Fe2SiO4 present) of olivine; the Fepresent is a chromophore that gives a dark or medium yellowish-green color. Some of the best, brightest green peridot contains traces of Ni or Cr, which are also chromophores. Peridot is abirthstone for August, along with sardonyx. The name Chrysolite is an older German name thatwas once applied to all gem olivine; the term is not as commonly used today but is sometimesused to denote a more yellowish-green to greenish-yellow stone, as opposed to a dark yellow-green or brownish green (olive green) common to peridot. Peridot is sometimes also referred toby jewelers as "evening emerald".The name peridot is from the French peritot, meaning unclear, and is probably with illusion to thepresence of numerous inclusions. Though flawless stones of smaller size (up to about 5 carats)are common (far more common than flawless emerald of similar size), larger clear stones are rare.

SourcesOlivine is restricted in occurrence to metamorphosed impure dolomites and to basic or ultrabasic(low in Si, high in Mg and Fe) igneous rocks. Nearly all gem peridot is derived from the latter.Unlike most other gems, olivine is highly susceptible to chemical weathering and thus does notsurvive very long at the surface in wet climates. This fact probably accounts for the very limitednumber of known gem localities, and their restriction to areas having arid or semi-arid climates. Most gem peridot, in fact, has its source from three localities: Zagbargad Island (also know as St.Johns Island) in the Red Sea; Myanmar (Burma); and Arizona.Zagbargad Island (Egypt), Red Sea - ancient source; mentioned by Pliny in 1500 BCIn veins that cut ultramafic rock (peridotite, dunite)Mines originally worked by primitive methods; were improved prior to W.W.I. $2 million mined in4 year period preceding W.W.I. Mines nationalized in 1958. Little or no mining currently takingplace.Peridot Mesa, San Carlos Apache Reservation, Gila Co., Arizonauntil very recently, 80-95% of world peridot production was from this localityFrom ultramafic nodules in basalt; small, granular crystalsExclusive mining rights held by various Apache familiesInclusions include glass blebs, chromite in "lotus leaf" habitCrystals typically small (1/4-1/2"), yielding gems of 2 carats or less. Gems over 5 carats rare.Myanmar (Burma), north of Mogok Stone TractBright green euhedral crystals in weathered serpentine (ultrabasic rock). Renowned for color, considered the finest peridot in the world.Have a "sleepy" appearance due to numerous small crystallite inclusions.Once an important source, not presently.OthersNew Mexico (Kilbourne Hole), Pakistan, Mexico (Chihuahua), Norway, Ethiopia, Australia, China,South Africa.

Shaping and treatmentStep or brilliant cuts. Lotus leaf inclusions in larger pieces may be placed parallel to table to givean attractive, iridescent sheen. No information on treatment, if any.Peridot is relatively soft and can be easily scratched if set in a ring. Some material is also quitesensitive to rapid temperature changes, an important consideration when mounting or repairingperidot jewelry.

Pricing and valuationIncluded or flawed stones not worth much. Best stones are flawless, with good yellow-greencolor. Stones of this character in 1-10 carat sizes run about $20-$100/carat; in 15 carats or larger$70-$250/carat. Brownish green colors and included stones are $1-10 carat in all sizes. Althougha beautiful gem material in its own right, peridot prices suffer from comparison with other greengems, emerald in particular, which commonly have a more desirable bluish tint with less yellow. Both Burmese and Egyptian peridot are regarded by most connoisseurs as superior in color toArizona peridot. This, as well as limited production from these areas, translates to higher prices.Larger gems (10 carats or more) show a better depth of color than do smaller ones. Fine Pakistaniperidot has also sold at a premium, fetching as much as $300/ct for gemstones larger than 20carats. The word diamond comes from the ancient Greek word adamas ( ), meaning unconquerable orunbeatable.Among the best diamonds are the colorless diamonds while attractive or brown diamonds are rare, and classedas fancy coloured , slightly brownish stones (off-white) are slightly less common than slightly yellow, and offerreasonably priced alternatives to colourless stones.Diamond inclusions are characteristics that occur inside a stone. They are usually called flaws, because theirpresence means the diamond is not perfect. The inclusions in emeralds are called jardins . Although flaws indiamonds may affect the clarity••• of a diamond , inclusions are like fingerprints, a characteristic that gives usall a special signature.[•••a term used to describe the absence or presence of a gemstone's internal and external flaws. A perfectstone with perfect clarity (clearness) is rare, although some flaws cannot be seen without using a loupe formagnification ]. There are many types of diamond inclusions and the purchase of a diamond ,which is aninvestment , should be made by an experienced person or relied to a well known firm . In any case the buyershould always ask a Certification of Authenticity for his diamond. Recently it is common that major diamondsellers write a number with laser on the diamond , so even if the diamond is stolen ,it can be identified from itsnumber written on it.

There are three types of gemstones: Natural, Synthetic, and Simulant.

Natural (also called genuine) gemstones include minerals and organic materials such asemeralds, rubies, sapphires, amber, coral, fossil, ivory, cultured freshwater pearls and naturalsaltwater pearls. Synthetic and Simulant are terms used by the USBM for laboratory growngemstones. Others in the gemstones industry may use different terms to refer to laboratorygrown gemstones.

Laboratory grown synthetic gemstones have essentially the same appearance and optical, physical, and chemical properties as the natural material that they represent.

Laboratory grown simulants have an appearance similar to that of a natural gemstone but havedifferent optical, physical, and chemical properties. Colored and colorless varieties of cubiczirconia are the major simulants produced.-In the past few years, the use and consumer acceptance of synthetic and simulant gemstoneshas grown. Much of this growth is the direct result of the recognition of these gemstones fortheir own merits, not just as inexpensive substitutes for natural gemstones.

Tips on cleaning faceted stones and cabochonsBy Lesa Foster

When trying to get the best out of your natural stones, remember that some stones are foundnaturally waxy in nature and no amount of cleaning will change that.-NEVER use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaners on stones as it could damage them andrender them unusable. Also avoid any sudden temperature changes as they may make the stonesplit.-According to the lapidary journal, some jewelers have had great success polishing waxy beadswith red rouge polishing paste [Used for polishing and buffing goldfill, 14 karat gold, silver andother soft metals to a bright finish. Can be used on copper, brass or nickel.] and a cloth or softbristle brush. Others have reported good luck with warm, soapy water - no harsh detergents orhot water. If you wouldn't stick your bare hands in the water, don't put your stones in it either -if you ever have to clean an emerald, they respond best to plain water with no detergents at all.-Never scrub any stone - soft rubbing works best. As a final note, don't let the stone soak - somestones are very porous and may absorb too much water. The best way would be to keep thestone in hand and use as little water as possible. Make sure to rinse well as a soap residue willcloud the luster of the stone.-No matter how you clean the stone, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth to avoid scratches or adulling film.
