T5|M5

• IBM POWER “C” boosted upgrades/enthusiasm for a short while however competition from SPARC T4 and Linux/x86 is turning it around

• T4 has made its mark to grow Oracle’s UNIX share. T5 |M5 is growing momentum.

• T5 and M5 provide an excellent opportunity for upgrades/re-architect projects for both HP and IBM as well as SPARC IB

• Itanium revenues are trending down starting in 2010 after the launch of Tukwila. Analyst reactions to Tukwila were lackluster.

IBM is Reducing Investment in Power Servers

• 5,000-8,000 jobs cut worldwide

• STG represents 47% of cuts in North America – 3,300 job cuts in North

America as of July 2013 – STG includes Power

Servers, PureFlex, and Power Software Development

Four strong MYTHS are driving this behavior

“UNIX has aprice premium overx86/VMware/RHEL”

“Commodity computingavoids vendor lock-in”

“x86 based servers arethe future because they

are cheap & good enough”

“VMware isthe Cloud”

8 Copyright © 2013, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

What we can prove today…

• TCO for SPARC/Solaris is better than x86/RHEL/VMware

• Migration from SPARC/Solaris is more expensive and more risk than staying on SPARC/Solaris

• Solaris, Virtualization, Systems, management included at no cost

• Price/performance on SPARC and Solaris is better than IBM/HP UNIX or x86 based solutions

• Solaris has the best features and functions for running Cloud or any enterprise application

Fact 1

Solaris delivers full enterprise capabilities. An Apples to Oranges comparison

• Scaling racks of x86 servers or blades is creating significant challenges in all larger enterprises

• The requirements of Cloud computing is demanding functionality and reliability that only SPARC/Solaris can deliver

• Industry leaders are advancing innovation beyond x86

• Low cost, low power, multi-core CPUs/GPUs are building pressure from bottom into the Servers

Fact 2

RHEL can cost more with enterprise add-ons. Even then it falls short of Solaris

• Lock-in is far more complex than the CPU and OS levels. Vendors build in proprietary elements to each layer to lock- in: blades, system management virtualization, networking, …

• VMware is proprietary; x86 designs aren’t interchangeable

• Oracle’s software stack is no more of a lock-in than any other but can be completely optimized

• Oracle Servers share common architecture, open mgt.

Fact 3

Trade-offs with Commodity:Less optimization; vendor finger pointing; high cost of tuning and management

• VMware adds overheads to each guest VM by design which causes scalability, performance issues

• VMware has many excessive license and support costs and has no hard partitioning

• SPARC has built-in hypervisor to provide Logical Domains w/o virtualization overheads

• Solaris, SPARC multithreading can scale to over 1,000 guests, zero overhead to build true, large scale clouds – no additional cost.

Fact 4

Does the lack of technical differentiation among virtualization vendors today warrant the price premium?

Power Management

• Save power by automatically turning off unused CPU cores. Two modes:– Performance: All cores turned on all the time– Elastic: Cores dynamically powered on/off as needed

• More enhancements on new SPARC processors:– CPU speed adjustment: adjust clock speed based on CPU load– Memory power management: put unused RAM in deep idle– Can set power budget for entire server: drop power to managed

items when reach budget
