1. The origin and beauty of the Rosary

The Rosary did not exist in the first centuries in

the form it has today, but holy souls certainly must

have repeated the words of the archangel Gabriel when

they prayed to the most Blessed Virgin: “Hail, full of

grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among

women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb”.

(Luke 1:18).

In his Apostolic Letter of September 29, 1961,

honoring the praying of the Rosary, Pope John XXIII

said, “O blessed Rosary of Mary, what sweetness in

seeing you pass slowly through the hands of the inno-

cent, of holy priests, of pure souls, of young and old

alike, of all those who appreciate the value and the effi-

cacy of prayer, brandished by countless multitudes of

the pious as an emblem and a standard announcing

peace in hearts and peace for all men.” Do we truly

appreciate that value and that efficacy of prayer?”

2. The Victories of the Rosary

We receive grace through prayer and most

particularly through our kind mother in Heaven. The

Feast of the Holy Rosary reminds us of the combats of

the most Blessed Virgin against the enemies of the

Church.

The most Blessed Virgin willed to make known

her presence in the holy Church throughout the course

of history, alongside those who were fighting to main-

tain the Catholic faith. She made it known through the

proclamation of her divine maternity against the Arians.

She made it known through St. Dominic. The Albige-

nisans were conquered thanks to the recitation of that

exceptional prayer which is the rosary.

And a little later, it is again on this feast of the

Holy Rosary that the Church evokes the intercession

of the most Blessed Virgin Mary at the victory of

Lepanto against the Moslems, thanks to the praying of

the rosary.

It is also she who drove the Moslems out of

Hungary during the time of Pope Clement XI. She is

stronger than armies, because she pushes back the enemy.

And we could also say that the most Blessed

Virgin Mary appeared at Lourdes, at La Salette, at

Fatima, throughout this modern age, to fight against

errors, to fight in particular against modernism and

communism. She said so explicitly. So the Most

Blessed Virgin Mary will be an example for you.

3. The Rosary: A Formidable Weapon

The Rosary is our weapon. It needs to be our

weapon against the devil, against Satan. The magnifi-

cent examples brought about through the recitation of

the Rosary and which history has passed down to us

should invite you to recite it often, and all fifteen

decades if you can. So entrust yourself to the most

Blessed Virgin Mary.

I hope that you all have your Rosary with you

and that you recite your Rosary every day, that you

pray to our kind mother in Heaven to keep you in the

Catholic faith.

When you feel yourself being tempted, when

you feel discouraged in difficulties, in trials, take up

your Rosary and recite it. Ask the Virgin Mary, our

kind mother in Heaven, to come to your help and you

will see how the Rosary is a powerful prayer. In appari-

tions, the most Blessed Virgin has always come with

her Rosary in her hand, to show us how attached she is

to that prayer.

At Fatima, she begged us to pray and to do pen-

ance. She took the Rosary herself and taught the little

children of Fatima to recite the Rosary with her, for

the salvation of souls, so they might save their soul and

that of their neighbor.

Go to Mary, address yourselves to her. She will

give you Jesus, that light which will illuminate your

souls. You will ask her to help you understand better

the great mystery of Our Lord Jesus Christ and she

will make you participate in the love which she has for

her divine Son.

Our Lady took Her to Heaven

Two little girls, who were sisters, were saying the Rosary very devoutly in

front of their house. A beautiful lady suddenly appeared, walked towards the

younger girl, who was only about six or seven, took her by the hand, and led

her away. Her elder sister was very startled and looked for the little girl every-

where. At last, still not having found her, she went home weeping and told

her parents that her sister had been kidnapped. For three whole days the poor

father and mother sought the child without success.

At the end of the third day they found her at the front door looking extremely happy and pleased.

Naturally they asked her where on earth she had been, and she told them that the lady to whom she

had been saying the Rosary had taken her to a lovely place where she had given her delicious things to

eat. She said that the lady had also given her a baby boy to hold, that he was very beautiful, and that

she had kissed him again and again.

The father and mother, who had been converted to the Catholic faith only a short time before, sent at

once for the Jesuit Father who had instructed them for their reception into the Church and who had

also taught them devotion to the Rosary. They told him everything that had happened, and it was this

priest himself who told me this story. It all took place in Paraguay.

- St. Louis De Montfort

W e must now consider that this

Lord, of whom it is said, "The

Lord is with thee," is in a special manner

the Lord of rational creatures, as man, the

rational creature himself, says in the eighth

Psalm: "O Lord, our Lord," etc. He is the

Lord of all men; He is especially our Lord.

As it is said in Isaias: "The Lord is our judge,

the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king”.

(Is. 33: 22). The Lord is our lawgiver in

this world; the Lord is our judge at the last

judgment; the Lord is our King who will

crown us in Heaven. This particular Lord

of ours was with Mary in such a manner

that He made her also our special Lady.

Which St. Bernard acknowledged when he

said: "Our Lady, our mediatrix, our advo-

cate, reconcile us to thy Son, commend us

to thy Son, present us before thy Son." But

behold, this Lord of ours is a most loving, a

most just, a most sure, a most renowned

Lord. A Lord who was not loving in bene-

fits, just in judgments, true in promises,

nor renowned among his people, would

not be thought much of. But Our Lord is

most loving in liberality; most just in equit

y; most true in fidelity; most renowned in

fame.

“ The Lord is with Thee ”

St. Bonaventure

First, therefore, we must note that our

own Lord, who is with Mary, is a most lov-

ing Lord in His infinite mercy. For He is

the Lord of whom the Prophet saith:

"Thou, Lord, art sweet and mild, and of much

mercy to those who invoke Thee" (Ps. 85: 5.)

He is a Lord of much mercy in many tem-

poral benefits, also in spiritual and eternal

ones, which out of his great mercy He has

bestowed upon us, and never ceases to

bestow. Would that we were not ungrateful

for so great mercies! Would that to such a

merciful Lord we were very grateful as

Isaias was, who said: "I will remember the

tender mercies of the Lord, the praise of the

Lord for all the things that the Lord hath

bestowed upon us" (Is. 63: 7.) Behold, Mary,

what a Lord He is, how loving, how merci-

ful, the Lord who is with thee. And because

this most merciful Lord is so merciful with

thee, therefore thou art most merciful with

Him, and truly of thee can it be said:

"A throne shall be prepared in mercy, and one

shall sit upon it in truth" (Is. 16: 5.) The

throne of divine mercy is Mary, the Mother

of mercy, in whom all find the solace of

mercy. For as we have a most merciful

Lord, so have we a most merciful Lady. Our

Lord is of much mercy to all who invoke

Him, and our Lady is of much mercy to all

who invoke her. Therefore St. Bernard

excellently saith: "Let him be silent on the

subject of thy mercy, O blessed Virgin, who,

having invoked it in his necessities, found it

wanting." The Lord, therefore, is with

thee, O most merciful Mary.

Secondly, note that our own special

Lord, who is with Mary, is the most just

Lord of equity, as it is well said in the Psalms:

"The Lord is just and hath loved justices".

(Ps. 10:8.) And again: "Thou art just, O Lord,

and Thy judgment is right" (Ps. 118:137.)

The Lord is most certainly just in all His

judgments, in all causes, in all His deeds, as

it is once more said in the Psalms: "The

Lord is just in all His ways" (Ps. 44: 17.) The

Lord is so just in every path of justice that

for no one will He depart from the way of

justice. And therefore it is well said: "God

will not except any man's person, neither will

he stand in awe of any man's greatness, for He

made the little and the great, and He hath

equally care of all." Behold, O Mary, what

kind of a Lord He is, what a just Lord, the

Lord who is with thee ! And because the

Lord is most just with thee, therefore art

thou most just together with Him. For

thou art the rod of Aaron, straight, erect,

flowering and fruitful; straight and erect,

by justice and equity; flowering, by virgin-

ity; fruitful, by fecundity. For who would

be the straight rod or stem, the upright rod

or stem, if the rod of Aaron were not up-

right? What soul would be just, if Mary

were not just? This is why St. Bernard says:

"Who is just, if not the just Mary, from whom

Cor Jesu-October 2016 5

sprang the Sun of Justice?" The Lord is,

therefore, with thee, O most just Mary.

Thirdly, note that our own special

Lord, who is with Mary, is most sure in

fidelity and most faithful in surety, as the

Prophet testifies, saying: "The Lord is

faithful in all His ways." Think, therefore,

upon those words of His, in which He has

promised a crown to the just and hell to

the wicked; and know that the faithful

Lord will keep His words faithfully. He will

faithfully do what He has spoken, as

Ezechiel testifies: "I the Lord have spoken,

and I will do" (Ezech. 30: 12.) The most

faithful Lord will most faithfully keep His

words, as He Himself says in the Gospel:

"Heaven and earth shall pass away," etc.

Behold, O Mary, what kind of a Lord He

is, what a faithful Lord He is, the Lord

who is with thee! And because the most

faithful Lord is faithfully with thee, there-

fore art thou most faithful together with

Him. For thou art that most faithful dove

of Noe, who hast most faithfully stood

forth as mediatrix between the Most High

God and the world submerged in a spiri-

tual deluge. The crow was unfaithful, the

dove most faithful. So also was Eve un-

faithful; but Mary was found faithful. Eve

was the unfaithful mediatrix of perdition;

Mary was the faithful mediatrix of salva-

tion. St. Bernard saith: "Mary was the

faithful mediatrix, who prepared the anti-

dote of salvation for both men and women."

The Lord, therefore, is with thee, O most

faithful Mary.

Fourthly, note that our special Lord,

who is with Mary, is the Lord who is most

renowned for fame. He is of a great name,

as St. Jerome testifies, saying: "There is none

like to Thee, O Lord, and great art Thou, and

great is Thy name" (Jerem. 10: 6.) The name

of the Lord is indeed of great fame and of

great praise among all peoples, as the Royal

Prophet testifies: "Kings of the earth, and all

ye people, princes and all ye judges of the earth,

young men and maidens, the old and the young,

praise ye the name of the Lord!" (Ps.148:1-12.)

The praise and fame of the name of God

has extended not only to every people, but

also to all time, as is manifest from the

same Prophet who says: "May the name of

the Lord be blessed from henceforth, now

and forever." Likewise, the fame and praise

of the name of the Lord has not only ex-

tended to every people and to all Lime, but

also to every place, as the same Prophet

says: "From the rising of the sun even to its

setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised".

(Ps. 112:2.) Behold, O Mary, how great a

Lord, what a renowned Lord, is He who is

with thee! And because He is a renowned

and famous Lord, who is with thee in so

renowned a manner, therefore art thou

most renowned together with Him. For

thou art well prefigured by Ruth, of whom

6 Cor Jesu-October 2016

it is written: "Be thou the example of virtue in

Ephrata, and have a celebrated name in Beth-

lehem" (Ruth 4: 11.) O Mary of the most

renowned name, how can thy name not be

celebrated, which cannot even be devoutly

uttered by anyone without some good

coming to him? St. Bernard testifies to this,

saying: "O great, O loving, O most praisewor-

thy Mary, thou canst not even be named, but

thou enkindlest love; nor canst thou be thought

of, without renewing the affection of those who

love thee; thou canst never enter the portals of a

loving memory without bringing with thee the

sweetness which is divinely inseparable from

thee." Mary, therefore, is well prefigured by

that woman of renown, Judith, of whom it

is written: "And she was greatly renowned

among all, because she feared the Lord very

much; neither was there any one that spoke an

ill word of her" (Jud. 8: 8). Mary is indeed

renowned because of her virtues and her

praiseworthy example; but she is even more

renowned because of her mercies and her

unspeakable benefits, and more renowned

still because of her graces and wonderful

privileges. For what is more wonderful

than to be a virgin mother, and the Mother

of God ? What wonder if Mary is renowned

in the world from so many thousand bene-

fits of her mercy, who is so renowned for

that one benefit which she bestowed on

man? St. Bernard says: "The renown of thy

highest favor is that bestowed on the God-loving

soul, who was reinstated by thee." The Lord

is, therefore, with thee, O most renowned

Mary. Rejoice, rejoice! Behold the most

loving Lord is with thee in such a manner

that thou also art most loving. The most

just Lord is so with thee that thou, together

with Him, art most just; the most renowned

Lord is with thee in such a manner that

thou also, together with Him, art most re-

nowned. O most loving Mary, save us impi-

ous souls by thy merciful, loving kindness!

O most just Mary, save us unjust souls by

thy just equity! O most faithful Mary, save

us perfidious souls by thy fidelity! O most

renowned Mary, save us by thy sweet

renown!

The Link between Heaven and Earth

“The Rosary is a long chain that links heaven and earth.

One end of it is in our hands and the other end is in the hands of the Holy Virgin…The Rosary prayer rises like

incense to the feet of the Almighty. Mary responds at once like a beneficial dew, bringing new life to human hearts.”

- St. Therese of Lisieux

"I t must have been 1:30 p.m when there arose, at

the exact spot where the children were, a column

of smoke, thin, fine and bluish, which extended up to

perhaps two meters above their heads, and evaporated

at that height. This phenomenon, perfectly visible to

the naked eye, lasted for a few seconds. Not having

noted how long it had lasted, I cannot say whether it

was more or less than a minute. The smoke dissipated

abruptly, and after some time, it came back to occur a

second time, then a third time

"The sky, which had been overcast all day, suddenly

cleared; the rain stopped and it looked as if the sun

were about to fill with light the countryside that the

wintery morning had made so gloomy. I was looking at

the spot of the apparitions in a serene, if cold, expecta-

tion of something happening and with diminishing

curiosity because a long time had passed without any-

thing to excite my attention. The sun, a few moments

before, had broken through the thick layer of clouds

which hid it and now shone clearly and intensely.

"Suddenly I heard the uproar of thousands of voices,

and I saw the whole multitude spread out in that vast

space at my feet...turn their backs to that spot where,

until then, all their expectations had been focused, and

look at the sun on the other side. I turned around, too,

toward the point commanding their gaze and I could

see the sun, like a very clear disc, with its sharp edge,

8 Cor Jesu-October 2016

An Eyewitness Account by Dr. José Maria de Almeida Garrett,

professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Coimbra, Portugal.

The Miracle of the Sun

which gleamed without hurting the sight. It could not

be confused with the sun seen through a fog (there was

no fog at that moment), for it was neither veiled nor

dim. At Fatima, it kept its light and heat, and stood out

clearly in the sky, with a sharp edge, like a large gam-

ing table. The most astonishing thing was to be able to

stare at the solar disc for a long time, brilliant with

light and heat, without hurting the eyes or damaging

the retina. [During this time], the sun's disc did not

remain immobile, it had a giddy motion, [but] not like

the twinkling of a star in all its brilliance for it spun

round upon itself in a mad whirl.

"During the solar phenomenon, which I have just

described, there were also changes of color in the

atmosphere. Looking at the sun, I noticed that every-

thing was becoming darkened. I looked first at the

nearest objects and then extended my glance further

afield as far as the horizon. I saw everything had

assumed an amethyst color. Objects around me, the sky

and the atmosphere, were of the same color. Every-

thing both near and far had changed, taking on the

color of old yellow damask. People looked as if they

were suffering from jaundice and I recall a sensation of

amusement at seeing them look so ugly and unattrac-

tive. My own hand was the same color.

"Then, suddenly, one heard a clamor, a cry of anguish

breaking from all the people. The sun, whirling wildly,

seemed all at once to loosen itself from the firmament

and, blood red, advance threateningly upon the earth

as if to crush us with its huge and fiery weight. The

sensation during those moments was truly terrible.

"All the phenomena which I have described were ob-

served by me in a calm and serene state of mind without

any emotional disturbance. It is for others to interpret

and explain them. Finally, I must declare that never,

before or after October 13 [1917], have I observed

similar atmospheric or solar phenomena."

Give your children to the Immaculate Heart

“The faults of children are not always imputed to the parents, especially when they have instructed them and given good example. Our Lord, in His

wondrous Providence, allows children to break the hearts of devout fathers and mothers. Thus the decisions your children have made don’t make you a

failure as a parent in God’s eyes. You are entitled to feel sorrow, but not

necessarily guilt. Do not cease praying for your children; God’s grace can touch a hardened heart. Commend your children to the Immaculate Heart

of Mary. When parents pray the Rosary, at the end of each decade they should hold the Rosary aloft and say to her, “With these beads bind my

children to your Immaculate Heart”, she will attend to their souls.”— St. Louise de Marillac

Fatima versus Assisi

10 Cor Jesu-October 2016

O n May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin appeared in

Fatima to ask the faithful to recite the Rosary

every day to obtain peace in the world and the end of

the war. Two months later, on July 13, she repeated

her request: “I want you to continue saying the Rosary

every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, to obtain

the end of the war and peace in the world.”

On September 20, 2016, on the World Day of

Prayer for Peace [in which Pope Francis participated],

there was no talk about Our Lady of the Rosary. Her

divine Son, the one Mediator given by God to man-

kind, in the person of His Vicar on earth, had to co-

exist with unbelievers and pagans, with the sworn ene-

mies of His Cross as well as with the sects that are tear-

ing His Church apart. A Catholic knows very well

where to find peace on this earth, which is the fruit of

charity. Ubi Crux, ibi pax. [Where the Cross is, there is

peace.]

If you want peace, it is necessary to preach Jesus

Christ as a whole, and work to extent the kingdom of

God on earth, in other words, the reign of Christ over

individuals, families and societies. For He alone is the

Prince of peace—Princeps Pacifer (liturgy of the Feast of

Christ the King).

Saint Paul proclaims it: “For Christ Jesus is our

peace…” (cf. Eph 2:14). The spirit of Christ’s Cross

and the honor of Our Lady, this is more than ever the

Rosary Crusade that the Society of Saint Pius X had

launched to celebrate the centenary of Fatima. And to

make reparation for the scandal of Assisi.

The first inter-religious meeting in Assisi, October 27, 1986.

Cor Jesu-October 2016 11

A nswering questions from the periodical Pacte in

1987, Abp. Marcel Lefebvre stated his views

about the interreligious meeting called for by John

Paul II in Assisi on October 27, 1986.

Monseigneur, your latest public statement is a violent

protest against the prayer meeting in Assisi…. Don’t you get

the impression that you are confusing the ecumenism of Pope

Wojtyla with the distorted ideology of interreligious dialogue

—so much in vogue in recent years—that denies the histori-

cal uniqueness of Christian salvation?

I see only one type of ecumenism, the type promo-

ted by the Council, which underscores respect for and

collaboration with false religions, which are placed on

the same footing. This is a new concept, in contradic-

tion with Tradition, which has been imposed in this

way. In place of the “missionary” Church appears the

new “ecumenical” Church. The meeting in Assisi can-

onizes this new Church, and that is an immense scandal.

On the other hand, this initiative has a significant

precedent: almost a century ago, in 1893, in Chicago,

a spectacular congress of world religions was held in

which some American Catholic bishops participated.

If you compare their speeches then with what the Pope

said to the cardinals last December about the “spirit of

Assisi,” you find impressive analogies. But a century ago

Pope Leo XIII unconditionally condemned the partici-

pation of the bishops of the United States in the Chicago

Congress. No, this is a scandal, a public blasphemy:

think of the Catholic missionaries in Africa who saw on

television the representatives of the animist religions

praying in Assisi at the Pope’s invitation…. In what
