Also our umpires were acknowledged for their ongoing commitment to the game we all love and follow. Well done to the clubs and teams that took the opportunity to do that. WorkSafe is the major sponsor of the VCFL and has provided wonderful support to local football for many years. That has also raised awareness of the require- ments and responsibilities of all members of all clubs in the areas of safety. As we get into the season it is timely to mention that clubs have a responsibility to their players to provide a safe working environment. In this case that means that all efforts should be made to ensure grounds are free of foreign objects, fence signs are made safe and without sharp edges, the boundary line is at least three metres from the fence (over the entire ground) and goal posts are padded and protected correctly. Also, change rooms and washing facilities should be clean, safe and hygienic for players from both teams and umpires. It is not just when we go to work that vigilance needs to be kept in these areas, it is throughout all activities undertaken with intent and football is no exception. This weekend will see the MPNFL celebrate and recog- nise the annual Pink Footy and Netball Day celebrated in conjunction with Mother’s Day. Pink Footy and Net- ball Day is a great way for sporting communities to pay tribute to Australians affected by breast cancer. Pink will be the colour to wear over the weekend with all funds raised going to the Breast Cancer Network Aus- tralia (BCNA). We encourage all clubs within the league to make an effort to support this day and the cause. As all would know sport, in particular football, is a great ambassador for many causes in the community and the MPNFL is among the most active and vocal supporters of these efforts every year. Finally, a big thank you to all club administrators who are working so hard to get their club’s information to both the league office and the public on time and to guidelines. We know this is not always easy and those who make the effort do not go unnoticed. On the Radar The MPNFL will shoot for the number one spot in this year’s WorkSafe Country Championships. The inter- league weekend will be played over 26/27 May, with 32 VCFL Leagues competing in the ranked format this year. This will be the biggest weekend of interleague football for many years and will see the MPNFL take on the GVFL for bragging rights at Shepparton on the Saturday, followed by a huge clash between the Casey Cardinia and Nepean Leagues for regional pride, to be played at Berwick on the Sunday. HistoriansAFLQ Hall of FameNo. 94 Bill MaginOriginally from Seaford in Victoria, he is a 650-game icon of Sunshine Coast football with 26 years as a player/coach/administrator of the Pomona club. His Po-mona commitment was interrupted by stints at Centrals Aloomba in Cairns and time in Victoria, Western Aus-tralia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Boasts an extraordinary list of highlights that include 12 club B&F’s, three League B&F’s - two on the Sunshine Coast and one in Cairns - and 10 League leading goal-kicker awards, plus four 100-goal seasons. Representing South Queensland, North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast, he won an incredible nine country carnival B&F’s. He had the privilege of play-ing in every country centre in Queensland that plays the Australian game and toured New Guinea with the Cairns League in 1981. His slight and wiry frame belied his undeniable talent. He had a prodigious leap and uncanny goal sense. Has continued to play in Masters competitions where the awards, accolades, goals and good times have continued. Still contributes through countless hours of junior coaching and was extremely proud when son Rhys was elevated off his beloved Essendon Bombers Rookie list to debut in the AFL competition in 2008.Doug DyallMPNFL [email protected]

Peninsula PreviewBulldogs off the LeashBy simon mcevoy – leader Newspapers groupMORNINGTON has been one of the surprise packets of the opening month of the season after posting nar-row but spirited wins over last season’s preliminary fi-nalists Seaford in round one and then Pines last week. For a side that won only two games in the previous two seasons, it’s been an exciting and enjoyable start. So, does it mean that the Bulldogs are off the leash in 2012?“I wouldn’t go that far,” coach Josh Beard said, keeping a lid on things.“We’ve still got a long way to go.”Far from getting carried away, Beard is pleased with his side’s improvement but says Mornington is still very much a work in progress. He says today’s clash with CHELSEA will be another stern examination for his Bulldogs.“We’ve got to be competitive against a Chelsea or a Karingal or a YCW. We’ll get to find out on Saturday,” he said.Chelsea has dominated Mornington in recent times, winning the teams’ last four encounters in a canter. But Beard says his side has improved and can surprise today. He was rapt with the way the Bulldogs bounced back from their loss to Mt Eliza in round two to beat Pines last week.“Obviously this week against Chelsea is another big challenge and we get them at home which is good,” he said.“They’re coming off a hiding from YCW so they’ll be pretty keen to bounce back.”Mornington seems to have more depth this season.Up-and-comers Peter Bain, Adrian Speedy and James Cameron have started well, while Kyle Brouwer, Mi-chael Altenkirch and Jack Dickson look to be exciting, untapped talents. While Mornington have a spring in their step, Chelsea must regroup after a bad loss to YCW.

Seagulls coach Jason Chapple was shattered by the 78-point thumping, believing they’d fluffed a chance to make a stand and announce themselves as a genu-ine contender. They went pop instead of bang. Chapps even publicly branded his side “soft” afterwards. Strong words, indeed. It will be interesting to see how they respond today. If you love peninsula footy you’ve got to love a FRANKSTON YCW-PINES clash.Always tough and physical encounters, the Stonecats-Pythons rivalry is one of the fiercest in the MPNFL. It’s been that way for decades.Today’s game looks, on form, lopsided, with the mighty Stonecats, unbeaten and brimming with confidence, seemingly charging towards another dominant season. Pines, on the other hand, are 0-3 and struggling.

Peninsula PreviewPines, though, have been a bogey side for YCW. The Pythons caused the boilover of 2011 when they edged the Stonecats by a point in round 15. Nine months on, could it happen again? Not if Ash Eames, Byron Barry, Lew Roberts, Rhys Johnson and co can help it.It’s been a trying opening month for BONBEACH, with injuries, suspension and defeats testing players and coaching staff. But amid it all new coach Steve Capp has remained strong and determined to guide the Sharks to calmer waters.“We think we are thereabouts,” he said.Capp said a couple of 20-minute lapses have cost Bon-beach in the early rounds.“Probably our best performance was last week in terms of four quarters of effort. We ran with Karingal for most of the game. We think we’re on the right track, but there’s definitely a lot to work on,” he said.“We know we’ll get better as the year goes on, it’s just being patient and continuing to believe in ourselves and work until it all turns around.”Today, Bonbeach hosts a young and enthusiastic LANGWARRIN, running on top of the ground after suc-cessive wins.It looms a huge test for the Sharks. The good news for them, though, has been the form of former Dolphins Anthony Raso, who kicked five goals last week, and Paul Rebeschini. Throw in back pocket dynamo Tom Payton, full-back Jason Ferraro, Jason Gumbleton and Josh Bull and the Sharks have enough talent to win today.Former Melbourne star Paul Wheatley has Langwarrin purring along. His calm and professional approach has been well received by the young list and they’ve re-sponded by playing some dashing footy. Andrew With-ers’ experience in the backline has been vital, while young forward Dale Eames is providing a reliable tar-get and Andrew Borrie, Mitch Gill-Furness and Matt Naughton have been impressive.A win today would have Langy hovering near the top of the ladder with a 3-1 record.Stuck on the bottom, EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE needs a win - that’s obvious - but things don’t get any easier

for the Eagles today when they bump into arguably the hottest side in the competition in MT ELIZA.Former Footscray champ Jason Watts has the Redlegs rumbling along and he admits he has depth and options at his finger tips. With the likes of Josh Norman, Sam Lloyd, Scott Lock-wood and Sam Gill in great form, opposition sides are having trouble quelling Mt Eliza’s run.“We’ve got quality kids who are willing to work for the cause and do everything right,” Watts said.“So it’s in a good place at the moment, but obviously there’s a long way to go.”Recruits Norman and Lloyd arrived with little fanfare but have helped transform the Mt Eliza forward line into arguably the best in the competition.“They are super players and it will take good people to play on them,” Watts said.“And those two can go anywhere on the ground. We’ve got the ability to move them anywhere.”SEAFORD and KARINGAL have a fierce rivalry and there’s never any love lost between them.Last season the Tigers had the Bulls’ measure, beating them twice – including a dashing 26-point win at the Tiger Den.Karingal will be keen to get one back today and has the form on the board.

Seagulls Flying in the Reserves...CHELSEA has made a perfect start to the season and gets the chance to make it four wins in a row when it meets MORNINGTON. Rod Dyer has the Seagulls playing free-flowing, attacking footy, with James Na-nopoulos and Adam Anderson showing the way and Jesse Odell kicking goals. The Bulldogs broke through for a good win last week and have been growing in confidence.MT ELIZA keep raising the bar and should be able to keep their hot streak going when they meet winless EDI-ASP. The Redlegs have more talent than most, with the likes of Luke Young, Justin Grant, Ross Patison and coach Damien Kent getting a kick.BONBEACH has been struggling and will find it tough against unbeaten LANGWARRIN, which has looked

very sharp with Ben Wehner, Scott Thorne and Matt Smith in hot form.SEAFORD suffered their first loss last week and today face the emerging KARINGAL, which sits on top of the ladder after a splendid start. Former Oakleigh District star Tim McEachern has been giving the Bulls constant drive, while Matt Jakobi and Ryan Jencke are also in top-notch form.FRANKSTON YCW and PINES are both yet to crack it for a win this season, but are getting closer.

Dogs in Dashing Form in the Under 18sMORNINGTON and CHELSEA clash in the match of the round. Mark Paganoni’s Bulldogs are unbeaten and are showing great talent, while the Seagulls look like being one of the main contenders this season. It’s a fine effort to be 3-0 by Mornington, given that all bar two or three of their list are first-year U18s. There is some ex-citing talent among the Bulldogs, including Jake Smart and Alex Marshall who have already played senor footy this season. Smart is one of the most skilful players at the club. Jordy Dickson is raw but promising and pow-erful Dylan Bakos is a key member of the side.FRANKSTON YCW will look to keep their unbeaten record in tact when they tackle PINES. Look for Mitch Barker, Zinzile Mosimane and Brenton Credlin to again show the way for the Stonecats.EDI-ASP are getting closer to a win and can push MT ELIZA today.BONBEACH is stuck on the bottom and face LANG-WARRIN coming off a gritty win.

Footy Turning Pink – Pink Footy & Netball DayOver 800 football netball clubs and associations across the nation will sport pink this Mothers’ Day weekend as part of the fourth annual Pink Footy & Netball Day.

Pink Footy & Netball Day was instigated by the Work-Safe VCFL as a way to help to support women, men and families in country communities facing the difficult challenge of breast cancer.

Money raised over the pink weekend will go directly to Breast Cancer Network Australia to support its work in ensuring women diagnosed with breast cancer any-where in Australia are provided with the very best infor-mation, services and support possible.

More importantly, Pink Footy & Netball Day sends a strong message of support and care to families in our communities that they are not alone – this is the great strength of local football and netball.

We have seen many moving and touching scenes over the years as local clubs have gotten together in celebra-tion and remembrance of the women in their club and community affected by breast cancer. They are tributes that are heartfelt and much appreciated.

It is important for us to recognise this weekend that breast cancer is not just a women’s issue.

Every woman in country football that is diagnosed with breast cancer is a sister, a partner, a mother, a family member or a friend of a man.

A diagnosis of breast cancer can also be a stressful time for men who are required to support their partner through the process - emotionally and physically. We must be aware and ready to rally around the men and families at our club when breast cancer strikes a family.

BCNA CEO Maxine Morand, herself a breast cancer survivor, says Pink Footy & Netball Day is a great way for sporting communities to demonstrate their support not just for women affected by breast cancer, but for their families and friends too.

“We are very proud of the impact of Pink Footy & Net-ball Day in regional communities.

“More than 14,000 women are expected to be diag-nosed with breast cancer this year alone.

“Currently one third of women diagnosed with breast cancer live outside major cities and face additional challenges, such as isolation and loneliness, as well as limited contact with specialist health professional or travelling long distances to receive treatment.

“One of the most important reasons for BCNA to host Pink Footy & Netball Day is to make sure that these women know that they are not alone on their breast cancer journey.”

For those of you at the football and netball today, please dig deep to support the efforts of the host club, or got to www.pinkfootynetballday.org.au to make a donation.

To all families who are currently facing breast cancer, please take the strength and solidarity from the coun-try football and netball community with you on your journey ahead.

Visit BCNA at www.bcna.org.au to find out more about the programs and services on offer.

Mornington

Today we welcome the Chelsea Football and Netball Club to Mornington on Pink Football and Netball Day to pay tribute to local women and their families who have been affected by Breast cancer. Donation tins are availa-ble at the canteen and bar for your donations throughout the day. We will be selling Pink doughnuts and running raffles with all proceeds going to the Pink Foundation. We also welcome our generous sponsors and Life Mem-bers to our annual luncheon and we thank you for your generous support and dedication to the club and hope you all enjoy a great day.Last week we had 5 wins with the 2 netball teams, un-der 18’s, reserves, seniors all having wins and the seniors are now with 2 wins and 1 loss and certainly starting to play as a team. The seniors had another one of those very close games which came down to the last second and congratulations to the players who battled right to the end. It was the Reserves first win under new coach Mat McKenzie and if they all could get to training 2 nights a week they would be a force this year. The under 18’s got off to a slow start but slowly got back into the game and maybe some goal kicking practise this week may not hurt. Also thank you to The Pines committee for your friendly hospitality. Today the Colts take on Beaconsfield and will need to be switched on from the first bounce and the rest play Chelsea which will be 3 very competitive games and we will need to play 4 quarters of football.Upcoming events: Trivia Night Saturday 2nd June, San-down Greyhounds Sunday 17th June, Doggie Disco Night, Saturday 30th June, Mid Year Ball Yarra River Cruise Saturday 21st July, Comedy Auction Night Sat-urday 11th August. It is a well known fact that the last time it didn’t rain during a Stonecats match at Chelsea was April 1976. De-spite the expected rain the Senior Stoners played some great team football to come out on top by 78 points. Eamer was dominant in the ruck, with Smithy, Morris dangerous around the ball and Andonov solid in de-fence all day. Congrats to Jack Mazurek on playing his first game for the club.A guest burger critic within the club ‘Hungry Jack’ has been busy rating hamburgers around the MPNFL to re-port back to Charlesy. The Chelsea burgers were rated as an 8 out of 10 which has given Charlsey something to think about behind the BBQ this Saturday on the “We need a Sponsor Hill”.The Reserves worked hard all day against a tough op-ponent and couldn’t peg back a 3 goal lead that the gulls had gained early in the game although the boys are showing that they are starting to gel well together as a team. The Unders faced off in a battle for top spot in wet and slippery conditions in a game that full of contested footy. The guy’s tenacity and courage shown at the pill was too much for the Chelsea boys with the Unders eventually posting a rousing victory by 11 points. The Colts ventured down to Somerville and left with 4 points and percentage to burn. The boys played a disci-plined team game that pleased Coach Jones that much he was still smiling from ear to ear on Saturday night. The Stonekittens A and B team keep improving with each match they play however despite giving their all against Chelsea both teams couldn’t come home with the points. Lozza Barry played an absolute ripper in the B game put-ting her name up for selection in the A team and Cat Meagher, one of the architects behind the establishment of the Stonekittens, starred for the A team.go stoNeKitteNs

Last week our Seniors, after a late second term foray for-ward that allowed them a 2 goal lead at the main break, fell to 5 pt loss against Morn. That’s two consecutive games where we have been beaten by less than a goal. Matt Fairbairn, Guy Hendry and Trent Potts all kicked 2 goals out of our total of 10. We were treated to a rarity in local footy once again and that was to see a father and two sons play in the same senior game. Well done Gor-do, Beau and Guy. They also achieved this in Rd 5, 2010. Reserves, 3 goals down at half time, did rally but lost out by 11 pts in a low scoring game. Shaun White notched 2 of our 4 game goals. Good to see Whitey back in action after missing the first two games. Thirds after a good win the week before were not good enough against the Morn pups. Corey Ludewig kicked 2 of the 4 team goals.Today we meet YCW for the 74th time which is the most senior games we have played against any club since 1964. They’re going strongly again after being premiers last year but don’t forget that we did knock them off in Rd 15. Can we do it again? Player milestone games. Well done to Aaron Ludewig playing his 50th club game today (19 sr, 30 res). Aaron played his first snr game in Rd 1, 2009 and was noted then to be our 500th senior team player. Jamie Messina and Jason Jordan are both set to play their 200th club game in Rd 6. We thank all the helpers and workers who are giving their time for the club but we have urgent need of a senior game time keeper. Can you help? Time clock and hooter supplied. Footy Fact File. Our highest ever score v YCW was 32.30-212, a 153 pt marg. in Rd 4, 1983. Jack Norris booted 9. Only one Pines player has ever kicked 10 or more goals against them and that was Ken Sole with 10 in Rd 3, 1998. We have met four times in senior GFLs with wins to us in 1976 and1994 but not in 1975 and 1991. Bon chance avec les Python aujordui.the last Bud

This week we welcome our Life members & Sponsors to the annual luncheon. We also welcome our special guest speaker Peter Daicos and particularly our past players, some from our first ever team and others whom have made the 1st team of the decade 1962/1971, an-nounced today. Today we reflect on their era, when they did’nt have the 5 star accommodation as what we enjoy today. Have a great time everyone.! This weeks 50th anniversary profile looks briefly at two very important people from that era, Harry Curr & Max King. Harry amongst other things wrote the BFC consti-tution. Max was the Clubs first coach and we welcome him here today. Both these men invested over 25 years into BFC and also the Nepean Football League. Harry Curr did so much that he is one of a few that has been recognised with a ‘Recognition of Service Medal’ by the VCFL. Max on the other did much the same, but had an obvious affinity with the game itself. Max also coached the NFL on two occasions in 1967 & 1979, and remains our only League Life Member. Both these men were made BFC Life Members in 1971. Bad luck to the two’s last week, but they stuck to the tasks well, albeit undermanned. Things will turn your way I’m sure guys. Good games to Devo, Eammon, ‘Wagon’ & Hicksy. The ones took it right up to Karingal last week and are a real chance to get some points today. Keep doing the right things guys, its coming together. Great games to evergreen ‘Smithy’, Reba, Gumby[both of ya’s] and great to see Mitch and Ricky on the field. Good luck today to everyone and we also welcome Langwarrin. Despite a damp and drizzly saturday at Lloyd Park we were able to celebrate our 2002 triple premiership re-union in style with three top wins. It was great to see so many old faces back at the club enjoying the festivities almost as well as when we took home the silverware.

Set up by a super second quarter the seniors managed to get back to back wins with Doggie brilliant down back and Eames shining again up forward with five goals. Bluey had a 100th he’d probably like to forget with a nasty finger injury - hope it doesn’t keep you on the side-lines for too long mate.

Dredgey’s boys were in control all day and notched up three straight as Wenny, Prickle and Grovesy lead from the front. Gibbo’s unders put in a great last quar-ter to snatch victory with Edwards, Hammill and Gibson amongst the best.

Today, turning our attention to Bonbeach it is imperative our boys turn up to play as the sharks are itching for a win and are always tough at home.

Social Notes - 19th MAY - Sponsors and Life Members Luncheon. 26th MAY - $5000 Draw - tickets available from players or at the bar.

A big thank you to all our sponsors including our majors of Berettas, Harcourts, Graham Quarries and RAMS. Go Langy!

Well we ventured to Langwarrin, in the hope we could get some 4 points, but to date we remain disappointed.Lets ensure we stick together as a group, to make sure we can work our way out of this current position. The Netballers continue to lead the way with all teams undefeated, good work girls! The 18s looked to be heading towards their first win, with a good solid first half. Whatever happened in the second half saw the boys snatched defeat from victory. Let’s make sure we use the pain to turn it around against the Mounties this week. Better players included Joshy T, Big Watto and Jake Mc!The seconds took to the field with a couple of old famil-iar faces, Presto Rubber Man was dusted off and given another run! However the boys battled for most of the day, challenging the opposition but never really tak-ing the lead! Better players included Alex Houghton, Greggy T, and Dunney! Keep working boys, get behind Stu and Mick! The seniors were very disappointing, the only joy for the day was late in the day when a few late goals brought some respectability to the scoreboard. Langy being more committed and desperate rightfully took the four points. If we are going to talk the talk boys we need to walk the walk. Great to see the continued improvement Timmy H, and Mark Mullins, and congratulations to Tom Turner on his first senior game. We need to regroup pretty quickly boys, lets stick tight and turn it around. The social Saturday night was a great success, thankyou to Mandy and the social committee for your efforts. This week we welcome Mt Eliza to Regents Park, and lets make sure we wear our Eagle with great pride...home games,we love em! sponsor of the Week: Bendigo Bank in Aspendale Gar-dens.....celebrating their second birthday this week...Well done to Russellmctaggart and his team!

Today we take on Edi-Asp and anticipate three closely fought encounters. To last week and the Seniors once again started with a big first quarter, running away with a comfortable 9 goal win against one of last years finalists. The “Muster” was again dominant with 6 straight, Gilly shut down his opponent and Titch, Dyl and Langers were also solid. The Reserves led all day in a low scoring affair, with Youngy great again, Jordy booting 3 and Jussy, Patto and Kenty also contributing well.In another tight affair, the Unders kicked away late in the game to win by a couple. Zel White named best on, RBC continues to dominate and Siggo, Rhys, Jack Nisbet and Turvs also picked up the votes. The Netball girls had a mixed day v Seaford, with the A Team recording a solid 9 goal win, but the B Team were soundly defeated. The Player Auction was well supported last Saturday – Thanks to Chris, Jim and Lace for coordinating the night.Sponsors of the Week: Thanks to Reddy Roasts, Moonah Links, Barmah Park Winery, Long Island GC, Restaurant Soy and Haircuts@Mt Eliza who all donate weekly play-er awards.Congrats to former Junior Ricky Plummer who has played the last couple of games with Casey and is ac-quitting himself well.Don’t forget its back to CB’s tonight for the after match meal and drinks.Good luck to all sides in the red and blue today.redleg#mtelizafc

Winter conditions greeted all 3 teams as they ventured to Mt. Eliza last week. The under 18’s went goal for goal against a more than competitive opposition for three quarters and perhaps could have gone in with a lead at the last break, had it not been for some missed op-portunities, particularly in the second quarter. The boys seemed to lose their concentration for parts of the game, and credit to the opposition who capitalised on all their opportunities. Well battled boys to go down by only a couple of goals and you surely learnt a lot about playing a smarter opposition on a big ground. Notable contribu-tors all day were Trea Tohiariki and Brendan Doyle. In yet another low scoring game, the reserves found they had difficulty in getting the scoreboard ticking over, al-though they made a contest of the game in general play. The seniors opened their account with the same num-ber of scoring shots as the opposition in the first, only to be 5 goals down at the first break with the opposition scoring with deadly accuracy. For the next two quarters, to the boys credit, they ground out the contested footy, and with some more accurate kicking for goal, may have gone in closer than 4 goals down at the last change. Un-fortunately, the last quarter was one way traffic for the most part, with the opposition running riot. No premier-ship points this week, but the advantage of the home and away season is that there is always next week, and no doubt all teams will bounce back. The netballers continued on their winning ways with two of the three teams recording victories. For the Ladies Day/Mother’s day round we return home to RF Miles, kicking off the day with our youngest tigers in the colts, followed by the reserves and the seniors. The under 18’s have the bye this week. As well as all the tiger faithful, we would like to welcome all players, supporters and officials from the Karingal football club, in what should be a terrific day of football. Good luck to all teams this week. A reminder of Ladies Day this round. All proceeds will go to Breast Cancer Awareness. We hope all ladies will enjoy a great day for a great cause. Also, tonight will see our Annual ‘Player Auction Night’ from 6:00 PM in the clubrooms.

Last week was all about getting the job done. Both senior and reserves teams came up against Bonbeach with the singular goal of the 4 points and to their combined credit both came away with solid wins against quality opposi-tion. The unders needed to get on the board after two losses (to the same team) in the first two weeks and did he job well recording a disciplined victory over Bomb-ers colts.Great news from the netball courts with both A&B teams recording wins against Bonbeach and the C grade girls going down narrowly to Edi-Asp…and all of this was missed by Robyn Burke…welcome back! The games and hospitality were also enjoyed last week by Red & White Army members, player sponsors and guests from Karingal and Rovers juniors. Many thanks to all involved in putting the day on.Today we face old foe Seaford on the postage stamp. Traditionally one of the hardest grounds to win on due to their large and parochial following we are looking to do exactly that in all grades. The Red & White faithful will be here in numbers and we must not disappoint. We are also proudly supporting Pink Footy/Netball Day today in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer support & research. Umpires a Fundamental part of the gameBy peter schwab

aFl Director of coaching (source: www.aflcommunityclub.com.au)

When I played, which is now 20 years ago, there was a stronger connection to umpires because of a few sim-ple practices which by the very nature of the growing professionalism of the game no longer exist.

One was the after game function where players, coach-es, officials and the umpires would meet informally in a setting conducive to discussing the game just played and the decisions made or not made. It certainly wasn’t argumentative; on the contrary it was educational and helped both parties understand each other better.

Allan Jeans, Hawthorn’s coach for most of my career, would always invite the umpires from the previous match down to training the following week. Another practice not widely undertaken in today’s game. At the end of those training nights Jeans would oversee the questioning of decisions arising from the weekend.

After awhile Jeans would finish up with his oft quoted statement about umpires, “I’ll tell you this. They don’t make as many mistakes as you guys.”

It was probably true, but what is more important to grasp is that whether an umpire makes one mistake or

100, they will never change it. If you can view um-piring from this position, then you can grasp the fu-tility of arguing against decisions. Most players can and do. It’s the spectators who often struggle with this.

My father became a VFL umpire after he tried but failed to reach the level he wanted with his football. When I quizzed him about why he took on umpiring he simply said it was a way of being involved with the game he loved at the highest level.

I believe that his understanding of the game as a player helped him in his umpiring, but more important it was his love of the game. Without a love of the game, um-pires like players, can never hope to be successful.

Umpires unfortunately have always been targets for player, coach and spectator abuse. Unfortunately it has been a part of the culture in football; a culture the AFL and community football have been trying to change for a considerable time now.

Let’s pretend you are visiting a game of football for the first time ever. I suggest you will be amazed how much time and effort people spend yelling or commentating about umpire decisions or non decisions. Often not in a vindictive crude way, though this happens, but as though it is all a part of the experience of going to the game.

Southern Umpires

MPNFL Since 1908 25

Fortunately from my observations at junior football over the past ten years I have been involved, the behaviour from everyone towards umpires has generally been very good. At every game I have observed, both teams have always given three cheers for the umpires after the match. That may not sound significant, but it is a small gesture which helps young footballers appreciate the role of the umpire. Also when coaches never complain or yell out over umpire decisions then players and often spectators follow their lead. The professional levels of our game will always have enough umpires of quality to umpire, but we have a crisis looming if our participant numbers continue to grow, because we simply do not have enough umpires now to cover the number of games being played. So how can we help? I say we, because it is everyone’s responsibility to support umpiring.Try and see umpiring in these terms. There is not a play-er who does not compete to the best of his ability on any given day, but we don’t yell or abuse him or her for their errors. Umpires do their best, so why do we hold them in such contempt for their errors. While it is great to have a focus on umpiring for a week, where all our community leagues and their clubs will

support it, as well as having high profile support from AFL coaches and players, it is imperative we keep the match day environment for umpires as supportive and welcoming as possible. Our failure to understand this could mean a lot of com-munity football matches may be played without them, and that can only be detrimental to the future growth of our game.ValeIt is with much sadness we report that Ray Thompson, a true Local Footy Icon, passed away on Monday 7th May in Mt Martha after struggling with Alzheimer’s for some time. Many would know, or know of Ray. He was a player and then coach of the Mornington Football club for many years, and then became the training-fitness supervisor for the Southern Umpires Association (SUA) during the 1970s-80s.

Frankston Park News

Locals Shine on Disappointing Dolphins DayGoal kicking practice will be the order of the day for the Frankston Dolphins after they literally kicked them-selves out of contention against Box Hill last week.Trailing by just two points at half time, the Dolphins dominated the third term, going inside 50 on 17 occa-sions to just seven for the Hawks. But after holding Box Hill scoreless for 20 minutes, the Dolphins had just four points and an out-of-bounds to show for their work. The Hawks then pounced, kicking four goals in time on to take a 22-point lead at the last break. That margin proved too much for the Dolphins, whose kicking around the ground and 21 per cent conversion gave them little hope of clawing back into the game.Coach Simon Goosey was left scratching his head at the dismal kicking at goal and some loose checking that allowed Box Hill – featuring 17 Hawthorn-listed play-ers – to fully capitalise on their limited opportunities.Frankston junior Mitch Bosward put in a tireless per-formance in the difficult conditions, while Morning-ton’s Shane Hockey showed class amongst the regular downpours.First year Tyabb recruit Corey Buchan was in the right spots all day, while former Box Hill midfielder Leigh Kitchin was dynamic in the third term as the Dolphins dominated around the ground.Seaford’s Jarrod Irving had another rock solid day at full back, while recruit Leigh Osborne continued his good form.

The Dolphins face North Melbourne-aligned Werribee Tigers next Sunday at Frankston Park, and will likely welcome back Karl Lombardozzi and Warwick Miller from injury.Last season Frankston trailed the Tigers by just five points at half time before falling away badly after the break, and will be hoping their improved fitness will be the difference this season.Frankston 1.4 2.8 2.12 4.15.39Box Hill Hawks 0.2 3.4 7.4 11.9.75Goals: Corp 2 Haretuku Kitchin. Nineteen-year-olds show promiseGoal kicking was also an issue for the Dolphins’ de-velopment team as they crashed to a 101-point loss to the Hawks. While it was a bad day for the undermanned young-sters, coach Dean Warren took some solace out of his team’s fight in the second half that kept the damage to seven goals to three. It was in stark contrast to some of the capitulations last season and, excitingly, the resistance was led by a quar-tet of local 19-year olds.Skye youngster Sam Fox picked up his second best-on-ground in three games, while Chelsea’s Todd Gardiner, Beaconsfield’s Damien Johnston and Jarryd Capiron from Edithvale-Aspendale were all outstanding.Pleasingly for Goosey, former Cameroon international soccer goalkeeper Patty Ndongo was also amongst the best players.Frankston 0.1 1.3 4.6 4.8.32Box Hill Hawks 4.5 12.7 17.14 19.19.133Goals: Fox 2 Pearce Whelan. Peninsula Netball

Welcome back to Round “FOUR” with a quarter of

the season already here, this season is already get-ting away from us all and it’s time to really knuckle down, if you haven’t al-

ready done so. Some interesting results again last week let’s see what this week brings for us all.Last week was umpire appreciation week for both foot-ball and netball – remember ladies we need umpires for our games to take place so let’s treat them with re-spect every week…An update on the changes that have been happening in the last few week, we have welcomed Peninsula Blue into our C Grade competition this brings 6 teams into the fixture. This was decided upon by the league as Pearcedale had additional team so instead of the girls missing out they were able to boost our competition. Welcome girls and good luck. This is still proving a timely exercise for Leah & Ian in the league office so fixtures will be to us as soon as they can get it organised not easy task im sure.Last week’s gamesKaringal v BonbeachKaringal welcomed Bonbeach at their court this week – Bonbeach coming into round 3 in A with no points on the board they were looking to give it a go against Ka-ringal who had only one win – unfortunately Karingal came out in front with a 22 goal win, B Grades also had the same results Karingal taking a 23 goal win – Karin-gal C going down to Premiership favourites Edi Asp by 10 goals – Bonbeach this week taking on Langwarrin which should make for an interesting result.chelsea v ycWChelsea welcome YCW looking also for a Win and get some points on the board – YCW having one win were hoping for their second unfortunately Chelsea came away with the 4 points with a 10 goal win. B Grade also gave Chelsea their first win by 18 goals. YCW take on in form Pines this week, Chelsea have Mornington for what will be a tough game.mt eliza v seafordTough game was always on the cards between these two teams both taking the court with two wins under their belt. Mt Eliza getting the 4 points with a 9 goal win put them at equal top with Edi Asp and undefeated well done girls. B Grade saw Seaford have a comfort-able 44 goal win to sit them at equal top along with Edi Asp. Seaford C played Pearcedale Blue with a 16 goal win moved them up the ladder to 3rd position.pines v morningtonPines hosted Mornington with all Pines teams unde-feated the games were going to be an interesting day. Senior A saw a tough battle with at times extremely physical clash – Mornington skills saw them coming away with their first win of the season by 6 goals, Sen-ior B, Mornington were also to strong with a 4 goal win which moved Mornington to 3rd on the later by a mere 4%. C Grade Pines were a winner with a comfortable 10 goal win giving them equal top position with Edi Asp.

langwarrin v edi aspLangwarrin having a tough start to the season with no wins and ready to take on Edi Asp was going to be for a long day for the girls. A Grade saw a 40 goal win to Edi Asp giving them a great % lead over Mt Eliza. B Grade girls gave it a red hot go but where no match again to Edi Asp with a 44 point win to the Eagles. Edi Asp C took on Karingal with a 10 goal win to also sit them on top of the ladder with a great %.With some great wins in Round 3 the Eagles are soaring across all grades can they be beaten…. Is the question will Mounty girls take over the post this will be an in-teresting game Good Luck to both sides.Don’t forget to tune in to the Netball Show in the morn-ing and support the girls.Good Luck to all teams both Netball & Football enjoy-ing being part of two great games and wear your club colours with pride. My tips for this week: Mornington, Pines, Langwarrin, Mt Eliza, Seaford Netty P

BonbeachIt was quite a miserable morning arriving at Karingal courts and the wet slippery courts proved quite a chal-lenge for us., with Karingal having the upper hand there our girls were pulling out all the stops. B’s welcomed back Fadzai, it was awesome to see her on the court getting a sinking a few goals. Jodies “in the gut” marking style whilst amusing was extremely affec-tive in the conditions. Our defensive end played an im-pressive game, great work by Taylor, Kasey and Denae. A’s played well together. Best was Emma - had a con-sistent game in defence getting out some great deflec-tions, Jess, Emily and Elyse moved the ball really well throughout the mid, just wasn’t quite enough to come out on top though. They were tough games to play, and the conditions left us cautious, but at least this time we had no broken bones. Karingal took it out in both teams in the end.I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Karingal for inviting us into their clubrooms for the afternoon tea spread they put on for us. All the girls were very im-pressed and enjoyed ourselves immensely!! Pressures on for us next time! This week we welcome Langwarrin to our home courts for the Pink Football/Netball round to support breast cancer. A wonderful cause for local sport to be involved in and support those affected by it. To all the mothers at Bonbeach Netty and Footy Mums....Happy Mothers Day. All your efforts are appreciated.

ChelseaA great day out for Chelsea Seagulls Netball last week with both teams winning convincingly. With good pressure through the centre court, consistent goaling, capitalizing on opportunities in most unpleasant con-ditions, all worked for a positive outcome. Thanks to Cath for looking after the girls over the next couple of weeks and again to Ashlea for her great support to me and Kaz. I thank all the girls for their continued support of their club and hope there are many more wins on the board soon. go seagulls!

Edithvale-AspendalePink is the colour of this weekend, as the whole club is geared towards raising money for the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. All footballers and netballers will be wearing a ‘touch of pink’ with the netballers once again ‘Doing it for Dee’, in support of Dee’s personal battle with breast cancer. Dee Carmona is our much loved 2010 undefeated Premiership coach and she was also a guiding force in the A1’s Premiership win last year. It’s fitting that we take on Mt Eliza this week as Dee will have friends on both sides of this game. Make sure that you attend our Pink Ladies Luncheon at Regents Park on Saturday. Tickets are just $25 and for further details see ‘The Enforcer’ Morcom or Mandy Mannix.Last week all teams were fortunate to come away with 3 good wins after playing in some miserable condi-tions. All games were away, with the C Grade team

playing Karingal, while the A & B team played Lang-warrin. Congratulations must go to Roo Girl Allie for all her hard work at Lloyd Park. The Langy girls looked fantastic in their new uniforms and the A Grade game was a lot tougher than the score sheet reflected. Our Eagle stars of the future are playing Fairways 2 at Jubilee Park today. It’s great to see the improvement in our U15’s as they are playing some terrific netball!Good luck to all Eagle teams this weekend! go pink! go eagles!!

Frankston YCWRound two turned out to be a very wet and soggy one and most certainly not ideal conditions for the net-ball court. Nonetheless the battles were still fought

Peninsula Netballhard down at the Chelsea sportswomans centre. The B team started off strong with Noo and Carlee com-bining well in the goal circle. Lozza Barry played an absolute ripper, deflecting and intercepting every ball in sight, a very well deserved best on court. Unfortu-nately Chelsea were’ the better team on the day and came away with the four points. The weather made a slight improvement for the A grade girls but it was still wet, soggy and very slippery. It was very much a game of possession netball , and at the end of the day un-forced errors and unproductive turnovers cost us the win and the four points on the board. The girls fought hard all game with Cat Meagher consistently running in the centre, Darci’s high accuracy in the ring and Lee changing it up, pulling the bib on in defence and doing a stellar job. Congratulations and good luck to Court-ney, Lauren, Lyshae and Cat who have been nominated to try out for the interleague squad. It is pink ribbon round this week with the Stonekittens taking on Pines at home. It would be great to see all of our supporters down at the courts and of course back at the club rooms afterwards with a gold coin donation to help raise some money and awareness for such a fantastic cause.go stoNeKitteNs!

KaringalThis is what winter sport is all about ladies! With the weather conditions at the Bullpit less than desirable for those with spray tans, the C girls took on Edi-Asp at home. After receiving a 52 point thrashing when we met them two weeks ago, the girls managed to bring that deficit back to 10 goals. Adjusting their game to the wet & slippery conditions, Brooke showed class in defence & leadership on the court. Laura P stood tall in goals. Awesome work for a team of girls who are nearly all new to the club & new to netball! An honour-able loss if ever there was one! The B girls took to the court and the weather continued its terrible behavior. Controlling the ball from the onset & throughout, all the girls maintained their intensity for the whole game, with hands over everything (Emma Wigney loving your pressure) & doing it with a smile (Jaime Rohan is our smiling assassin). Angela fed our goalers & Emily pro-vided support through the mid court. The A girls wanted to clean up their game of the last two weeks and that’s exactly what they did! Beck was a star in goals with 31 of our 42 goals! Both Beck & Sara in goals found some space that they couldnt last week and they’ll gain confidence from their performance. They were well supported by Little Birdy who was fast through the centre and Jade & Jess were our unstoppa-ble wing women! The ever reliable Rachel & Mel were unstoppable in defence. Sadly we lost Mel in the third quarter to a family emergency - spurring the girls on to a convincing win. Our thoughts are with the Scott fam-ily & wish Mel & Katie’s Dad all the best.In the spirit of “umpire appreciation” round, I want to thank our umpires Ali & Laura. Big thanks also to the Bonbeach girls who joined us for afternoon tea in the club rooms. Even bigger thanks to Audrey, Margot & the ladies who organised the impressive spread! Today we take on Seaford in luxury at Patterson River SC for

pink football / netball round, proudly raising money and awareness for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Lets make it three from three girls. Tonight is our func-tion - Bogan Bingo - dress up Bogan style and lets make it a cracker. Tickets still available for $35 & can be pur-chased at the door. Tune in at 8am to 98.7FM every Saturday morning for the MPNFL Netball Show with Tahlia & Renee. go BUlls!

LangwarrinA Fantastic effort by both teams on the weekend, with all girls looking the part in our new dresses, we met with top of the ladder Edi-Asp at home in the wet which made for a slippery game of netball. The B grade girls came out firing but couldn’t take the points on the day, a great effort by all. Congratulations to Ally Quadara who took out best on court for the B grade girls walking away with the Hideaway@135 spray tan with her nice defense work. A grade looked strong against the reigning premiers but Edi-Asp had a big height advantage, well done to the girls down in de-fense. Congratulations to Shandell Paterson taking out the A grade best on court and taking home the Lang-warrin Beretta’s Hotel voucher.Next week we meet with Bonbeach on their home turf and will be looking to get a couple of wins on the board. Fingers crossed we have Kellie returning from injury to play her first game for the season. In preparation for Pink football round this week we ran a raffle last Saturday. Thanks to Yellow Tail wines for your generous donation and Kylie Bourke and Kristy Herdman for your great ticket selling! We were able to raise $327 for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Thanks to Jamie Bartling from Rams Home Loans for your support. For all of your Loan’s needs, please con-tact Jamie on 9793 3309 or 9770 2277. RAMS Simply better. Also a big thank you to Hideaway@135 for your gen-erous spray tans, all the girls will be working hard to snap these up. For all your spray tan needs contact Ros Zeuschner on 0409 960 123. Good luck this week to everyone. go laNgy!

MorningtonOur first win in A grade – Well done Bulldogs. A grade had a great tussle and were able to keep their compo-sure after half time. Dani gave plenty of drive in centre and Chris fed the goalers well. Leah and Sarah kept up their great form from last weeks B grade game and kept the scoreboard ticking over. An injury to Captain, Jess, early in the third quarter meant a reshuffle and Tess moved back into the WD position with instant success.

Peninsula NetballGeorgia and Kim combined well in defence in the sec-ond half and intercepted many attacks. Leah’s move to WA kept the precision passing to the gaolers and eventually Alyshia and Sarah in goals wore down the opposition and we came away with a 6 goal win. Best players: Sarah Williams, Kim and TessB grade had a great contest with the Pine goalers hold-ing well in the first half. We settled and got more move-ment from our goalers in the second half but an injury to Grace meant that Bec had to run centre and did a great job both in attack and defence. Beth and Meg were too strong in goals with a bit of luck going their way with the loose ball. Newcomer Georgia added height in defence and with her aerial leap intercepted many of the Pines attacking moves. A great win by 4. Best players: Beth, Bec and MegC grade were right in the game for the first half. Bridget controlled the centre court throughout the game and fed well to the goalers. Larissa was on target again with Mel as a great support. Cathy’s height in the second quarter in defence gave us a good advantage. Unfor-tunately the second half was not as good and the Pines went on to a 10 goal win. Best players: Bridget, Larissa and Megan Next week sees us against Chelsea and with a few team changes required due to injuries and ab-sences we intend to Keep The Dream Alive – 3 from 3 wins! go BUllDogs

Mt ElizaA very tough game for B grade playing in wet wintry conditions. We set off to a slow start in the first quarter, which unfortunately had us playing catch up for the rest of the match. Our second quarter was by far our best with a reasonable score difference of only 5 goals. There were lots of scoring opportunities in the 2nd for Sam C. and Elise which they feasted on. One of the fantastic pieces of play was the powerful ‘hand ball’ from Renae resulting in a goal! Mandy was able to capi-talize when in possession of the ball with some clever passing into goals. Micaela managed to get some useful tips through the mid court resulting in turn overs. Well Done girls. A fantastic win for our A grade girls against strong com-petition. The defense work made it difficult for Seaford to clear their centre pass and score from the onset.Michelle and Jess W. worked well together in the circle making it tough for the Seaford goalers. A sensational 2nd quarter placed us in a very comfortable position at 1/2 time with a 13 goal lead.A strong effort through the mid court from Jessica A. supported by Chloe on the wing who was instrumental in delivering the ball to the goalers. Anna worked tirelessly to make good position for shooting scoring well. Karen made some strong drives on the base line, shot well and rebounded strongly. To Seaford’s credit they didn’t give up and came back stronger in the 2nd half. An even 3rd quarter set the scene for a tense last, but our early lead held us in good stead finding us winners by 9 goals in the end. Great game from both teams, well done. The winners of the ‘Simply Brazilian’ awards this week go to Karen R. in A grade and Elise in B grade. We look froward to this weeks match against Edi/Asp.go redlegs!

Pearcedale BlueLast week with the fixture we organised to play Seaford at home, and welcome them to play out side. Weather playing a huge part in last weeks game, the girls have not yet experienced the cold & rain, I tell you winters coming so toughen up ladies, the girls had a tough game on there hands from the word go… missing a few girls out of the side last week im sure they can’t wait to get back on the court and hoping for a better result than last week and also nicer weather. Watching the Seaford game it will be a great re-match when we met them later in the fixture. BEST ON: JADE BRADLEY “ROCK IT ALL THE WAY GIRLS” go paNthers

SeafordGreat work, to all our teams this week! Playing in the rain at two different venues meant that this week was always going to be tough! Big thanks to all the girls that stayed to watch, it’s always great to have your support!C grade played at Pearcedale blue (new to our compe-tition) in what was a verysoggy match. The girls came together as a united front and put in a strong effort to come up trumps against the home team, winning 27 to 16. B Grade girls went head to head with Mt Eliza in a game that started wet and finished with a little sun-shine coming through. The girls were up against some great opponents with strong shooters and great defen-sive players the girl came through with a noble win 65 to 21. A Grade had their first loss of the season going down to Mt Eliza 30 V’s 21. From the outset the expe-rienced Mt Eliza Team took the reigns and dominated both defensively and offensively. From 16 goals down at half time, the girls slowly clawed their way back. It was a fantastic 2nd half and we outshot the opposition to go down by 9 goals. This week is ladies day at the club. It’s sure to be a fan-tastic day and we hope to see you all there! Don’t for-get that we also need volunteers for the “Man-O-Man” function being hosted by the netball girls.
