2 AWARE November 2013

I hope you were able to come to one of our office opening parties. We were happy to meet and greet long-time and new members. If you couldn’t come, I hope you will drop by in the near future. The Hong Kong Women’s Choir sang for us and even composed a song in our honor for the occasion. One of the many

amusing lines - “Well in school I studied Spanish, just as good as you please, but when I got to Hong Kong I found I shoulda studied Chinese!". I can certainly echo that sentiment.

One of the many joys of city living is people watching and listening in on people’s conversations as they pass by on the street – it is great to hear the cacophony of languages and sounds

but it would be even better if we could understand them. I am waiting for a tech genius to invent the device that simultaneously translates any language into our native tongue.

Are you are looking forward to the AWA Charity Bazaar as much as I am? What a wonderful opportunity to shop for the upcoming holidays and feel virtuous at the same time, since we know every penny we spend is going to a good cause. It is AWA’s biggest fundraising event of the year and all the proceeds go to help those in our local Hong Kong community – including local charities and students.

The Lucky Lai See at the Bazaar will be special this year, as we have many local businesses donating to us. Stop by the bake sale for delicious home baked goods and plan lunch with your friends at the cafe. Tremendous thanks to Rachel Bourke, Angela Bellas and all you volunteers who are organizing this outstanding experience. Last year I bought Christmas decorations and jewellery for the holidays, along with other objects of desire. Also, thanks to all of you who are attending and bringing friends, relatives and acquaintances.

I wish all our American members a Happy Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to reflect on our many blessings. One of my many blessings is the fellowship of all of you wonderful AWA members!

Eileen GlynnAWA President

As it gets closer to Christmas, I am on the hunt for some presents from Hong Kong. After being in Asia for a while, my family and friends are starting to expect something new and unique every year and can’t be fobbed off with a tea set from Temple Street Market or something that may or may not be jade. Fortunately, we have the AWA Bazaar to look forward to this month and I am already planning which vendors to visit.

Our intrepid local tours organizers have also arranged some great opportunities for shopping. In November, we can look forward to visiting a wonderful street in Foshan, which is full of ceramic shops and there are many bargains to be had. The always popular tour to the home furnishings district in Shenzhen (think Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma…) is back as well. AWA members will also have the chance to

visit the Yuet Tung China Works showroom in Hong Kong, to view their hand painted china products.

We have an article this month about Sham Shui Po, a little understood area of Hong Kong. Beneath its gritty exterior lies an artistic heart and we will find out about two of its most creative destinations. In November, we are also offering a tour to this fascinating area for those who enjoy making their own jewellery and would like to know where to buy supplies.

I enjoyed the Office Opening parties in October. For many members it was the first time that they had seen our new office. We have come up with a few suggestions for restaurants to visit around the Sheung Wan area. So do drop into the AWA office and take a look around the neighbourhood.

Bake-a-thon PartyThe 2013 AWA Bazaar and Bake Sale are really just around

the corner. We will be having a very special Bake Sale Final Push Bake-a-thon Party at Fukwawa Happyland and Studio. The owner, Teresa Cheung has generously offered the AWA complete use of her workspace and commercial ovens along with her considerable baking expertise for the entire day and evening, starting at 9AM.

We will be baking and packaging bread, quick breads, brownies, cookies, cupcakes (decorating, too), and more. All ingredients and recipes will be provided. This is a great opportunity for non-baker members and helpers and those of us with either no oven or with temperamental ovens to bake for the cause. Everyone will get a take home recipe collection from the day.

Come for the morning, come for the afternoon, come for the evening or stay all day. The more hands the merrier. Soup and salad lunch, drinks and snacks will be provided.

If interested in participating, contact Marybeth Coffer at Marybeth. [email protected] or 6624 4484

Red Cross Cookie DriveFor the past thirty years, the Red Cross Cookie Drive has been one of AWA’s longest standing holiday traditions. This annual event, organized by the Red Cross, provides home baked cookies to over 2,000 children who are in hospitals in and around Hong Kong. AWA members bake or buy thousands of holiday cookies to be distributed by the Red Cross at twenty-five sponsored Christmas parties. Last year we were able to provide over 7,000 cookies to the Red Cross, an AWA record! CALLING ALL BAKERS! We need your help for another successful season. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the first week of December. Pull out your cookie cutters and start assembling your cookie decorations. Watch for further information to be provided in the December issue of Aware. Please contact Catherine Greco [email protected] if you would like to bake, buy, host a drop-off point, or attend a party.

ThErE was an excellent turnout for all three office opening parties held on October 8, 9 and 10. The events provided an opportunity for members to see the new office, meet AWA Board Members and catch up with old and new friends - all while enjoying drinks, canapés and entertainment. Since this is our first change in headquarters since 1976, it is indeed a cause for celebration.

AWA President, Eileen Glynn noted that members were very impressed with the new office and it is hoped that the space will be well used for AWA meetings and events.

Sincere thanks must go to Nicky Cooper and Barbora Mayer for organizing the events, Diane Li and Joanne Lam for assisting in the logistics and to Stephanie Bourque and the Relocation Committee for making it all happen.

Support of AWA comes in many forms and is greatly appreciated. We are grateful to Asian Tigers for facilitating the move and for the spectacular flowers sent for the opening as well as to AWA artists Elise Van Stolk, Kumiko Matshushima,

Rachel Smith and Sarah Brandt for the beautiful and interesting art decorating the walls.

We would also like to mention Eileen Marion of Golden Gate Wine and Laurie Goldberg of AmeriCraft Imports who donated drinks as well as Todini Caffé, suppliers of truly delicious ice cream. Thanks also must go to the speakers and entertainers for the events-the Hong Kong Women’s Choir, The Graceful Music Ensemble and to Jennifer Field Lang for her talk on Sheung Wan. Lastly, we would like to offer our appreciation to Richard Vuylsteke and Ming-Lai of Am Cham who partner with us in Charitable Donations.

It was also a privilege to meet and speak with members of local charities and educational institutions supported by AWA through charitable donations, community service and education & scholarship.

* Please note the art decorating the walls is available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds will go to AWA fundraising.

Join awa’s asian Tours on an unforgettable journey.Once the center of powerful Buddhist kingdoms, Islamic

sultanates and the Dutch East Indies, the Java of today is a major economic center of Indonesia, with 60 million people living in a diverse cultural amalgam of languages, religions and traditions. Our Asian Tours Journey to Java offers you a once in a lifetime chance to see this mountainous island and its people in one unforgettable week.

We begin our Journey in Surabaya where we check into the stunning colonial-style Hotel Majapahit.

The next morning is spent exploring the Old Harbour with its bustling schooners or Pinishi. We then visit the Lapindo Mudflats where the mud stretches as far as the eye can see and still has steam billowing out from the middle of it.

Before leaving for Mount Bromo, we take a quick tour of the House of Sampoerna and the Arab Quarter.

We rise early the next morning so we can experience the magical sunrise of Mount Bromo. But first we must take a jeep safari through the Sea of Sands before arriving at the foot of Mt. Bromo itself. Known as the “volcano within a volcano”, the base of the mountain actually rises from the larger Mt. Tengger (hence the name of the National Park). From the foot of the inner volcano we travel by foot or pony to the rim of the still-smoking crater. Rest stops along the way will come in handy, but it’s the view from the crater’s edge that really takes your breath away.

We leave Mt. Bromo and return to the hotel for breakfast, followed by an excursion to Sukapura Village, and continue to explore as we hike thorough villages and terraced terrains around Ngadisari and finally enjoy sunset at Mentigen Point.

Our next destination is Yogyokarta, the smallest province of Indonesia and the only one that is still governed by Java’s pre-colonial monarch, the Sultan of Jogyokarta. Referred to by Javanese as “Jogja”, Jogyokarta is a Special Region of Indonesia, and one of the most spectacular.

Upon arrival we proceed a traditional Javanese lunch and in the afternoon we visit the underground temple of Sambisari

Village and continue on to Prambanan Temple, one of the most beautiful Hindu temples in the world with its famous bas-relief depicting Ramayana’s story. We are then treated to an evening at the renowned Ramayama Ballet set outdoors at the Prambanan Temple.

Our second day in Yogyokarta starts with a visit of the Kraton Royal Palace, the hallmark of Jogja’s art. This vast walled-city complex was built in the 18th century and is the residence of the current Javanese Sultan. The scene changes in the afternoon as we are free to explore Jogyokarta’s fabulous arts & crafts shops. Jalan Malioboro, Jogja’s main shopping street, with beautiful batiks, intricate silver work and other Javanese crafts, are a haven for the shopper – or even just for window shopping. Later we get a chance to see

the Batik Plentong factory where traditional batik is painted and printed, before driving to Borobudur.

We rise early and proceed to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site Borobodur, a ninth century Mahayana Buddhist Monument in Magelang. Comprising six square platforms topped by three c i rcu lar p lat forms, Borobudur is decorated with more than 2600 relief panels and more than 500 Buddha statues. Set between the two

twin volcanoes Sundoro-Sumbing and Merbabu-Merapi, Borobodur is still a sacred Buddhist site.

In the afternoon, we are fortunate to visit Mesa Stila’s coffee plantation.

Coffee was introduced into Java by the Dutch East India Company in the 1700s, and the Javanese love affair with these delicious beans has thrived ever since.

Sunday morning invites you to a refreshing and relaxing Yoga activity before breakfast and our return to Hong Kong.

Sign-ups for this unforgettable trip start December 1st. Register on line at http://www.awa.org.hk or download and complete an Asian Tours Registration form. For questions about this trip, contact one of the tour coordinators: Natalie Huyghe [email protected] or Betty Thai [email protected] .

Java Indonesia, The land of many lands..

a warm wElComE, convivial atmosphere and a look at the Netherlands was an exciting start to the AWA Global Insights series. Thirty eight AWA members and guests were greeted by hosts, Consul General for the Netherlands Wilfred Mohr and his wife Ellen de Muinck-Keizer, to their residence on The Peak.

After the opportunity to chat with old and new friends over wine and canapés, guests were treated to a lively and interesting talk by the Consul, which provided an insight to the culture of the small European nation of the Netherlands. Built against all odds and reclaimed from the sea, it is much more than windmills and tulips. It is becoming an economic giant in technology, investments and world markets.

Small though it may be, The Netherlands has a long history of making an impact on the world and it continues to do so in the 21st Century. Mr. Mohr provided a glimpse into the past, telling the group how in previous centuries the Dutch were traders, explorers and of course artists such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh.

In today’s world, The Netherlands continues to contribute to life in Asia with regards to architecture, engineering, music and the arts – and of course Florentijin Hofman’s Rubber Duck – a welcome sight in Victoria Harbour earlier this year!

A founding member of the EU, and an active member of both NATO and the UN, The Netherlands is a stable democracy with a constitutional monarchy. It was one of the first nations to give women the right to vote in 1922.

Mr. Mohr also discussed the country’s policies on moral issues such as soft drugs, euthanasia and abortion, issues which often are in the news.

Throughout his presentation, Mr. Mohr welcomed questions from his audience. Many guests commented on how interesting the presentation was and much they learned. The evening ended with some socializing and discussion with thanks offered to the Consul General and his wife for their warm hospitality. The Netherlands may well be on everyone’s list of places to visit next summer.

Members of AWA can look forward to the next Global Insights event soon.

as mosT PEoPlE in Hong Kong have experienced, moving is a huge pain! Not only is finding the new location you want to call home difficult, but there is also the challenge of making the new neighborhood yours. Moving a business or an organization such as AWA, is no different.

When it became clear that the space the AWA had been in for so many years was not going to be home for much longer, we had to try and find a place that met a long list of requirements. Obviously easy access for the majority of our members was high on the list but we also wanted an area that offered a little something for almost everyone.

Sheung Wan is a changing area. You will notice the bamboo spider webs on almost every street. There is an

eclectic mix of established dried fish markets, antiques and outdoor food stalls alongside art galleries, wine bars and boutique hotels. Its geographical area covers a wide path from the Macau ferry terminal in the North to Caine Rd towards the south, Cochrane St (the start of the escalator) to the east and Hospital Road to the West. It is a bubbling cauldron of activity waiting for discovery!

The best way to meet our new neighbours is on foot - the area is a puzzle of one way and dead end streets. The experience is well worth every step. The list included below is just a small sampling of the diverse range of shops, stalls and restaurants just waiting to welcome you in.

whEn you sTEP out of the MTR into the Sham Shui Po district, there is no sign of the modern architecture of Central Hong Kong. You could have stepped back into the 1950’s with the vendors cooking exotic fare right on the street and the laundry drying on lines sticking out of every building.

As interesting as this neighbourhood is for maintaining the old traditions of Hong Kong, it is also a haven for arts and crafts. If you are an artist, you might already know all about what treasures are here. If you don’t know yet, some of the secrets are about to be revealed.

There are two exciting art spots to visit in Sham Shui Po: Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Hong Kong and the Jockey Club Creative Arts Center, both of which are housed in sensitively restored buildings

SCAD Hong Kong North Kowloon Magistracy Building was built in the 1960’s

and was renovated by SCAD in 2009. Palmer and Turner Architects designed the original seven story building which was completed in 1960. The building functioned as Hong Kong’s busiest Magistrates Court until 2005 when it was closed. Many of the older citizens from the local neighborhood still like to drop in and reminisce about the old days when the courthouse was a very active part of the community.

SCAD students are from all over the world and the art and design programs on offer include advertising, animation, fashion and interior design, among others.

The beautiful slate floors were so dark from years of pollution that no one knew that it was there until the black soot was cleaned away during the renovations. The banisters have been restored and the huge metal doors have been refurbished but are always kept closed these days so that the street soot can no longer drift into the lobby.

One of the original courtrooms has been maintained very much as it was in the 1960’s but now it is used as a lecture hall. Step into this space and see what it was like to be on trial with the original jail cell on the side of the courtroom still in place.

On the lowest level of the building, the old jail cells are still intact, only today they function as offices for the staff.

Go to http://visitscadhk.hk/en/ for information on the exhibitions and tours or to schedule your own tour. Tours can be booked in advance on line at the web site.

SCAD is located at 292 Tai Po Road.

The Jockey Club Creative Arts Center (JCCAC) is just a few blocks away from SCAD Hong Kong. Built in 1977, it is a nine story factory building, which now houses over 100 art studios. Many of the artists use the studios to work but the building has frequent events where the public is welcome and art work can be seen displayed throughout the center. Every three months the Centre hosts a Handcraft Art Fair, when tours of the building are available. The next scheduled Art Fair is November 30 and December 1 from 1pm to 8pm.

Walk into the center courtyard and enjoy the peace and tranquility and the works of art on display.

On the first floor there are two delightful eateries that are great places to relax and have lunch. One is the Heritage Tea House where you can have a traditional noodle dish in a quiet charming tea room. The service is wonderful and the surroundings are peaceful and traditional. Just across the hall is Café Golden which is a comfortable coffee house.

Travel by MTR to Hang Hau (purple Tseung Kwan O line) and take Exit B2 where you can take a 20 – 30 minute bus ride on 101M minibus to the terminus Sai Kung. Alternatively if you live on Kowloon side you can take the red minibus (just down the road from the Swatch Shop, 56 Dundas Street) in Mongkok to Sai Kung, a 30 minute ride.

Once you get off the minibus in Sai Kung walk straight along the promenade past the many vendors selling trips to nearby islands and Geoparks. It’s possible to find numerous seafood restaurants in Sai Kung. Hung Kee Seafood Restaurant (Shop 4 – 8, Siu Yat Bldg., Sai Kung Hoi Pong Square) has an extensive menu and you can see most of what they serve in bubbling water tanks outside filled with lobster, fish and crabs.

For something different take your first right onto Hoi Pong Square where you will find Casa, a new Tapas Bar (Shop 1&2, Siu Yat Bldg., Sai Kung Hoi Pong Square). Only open since August this year, it already has a loyal following of regulars.

Walk back to the promenade, turn right until you come to

The Bottle Shop (114 Man Nin Street). They sell a large selection of 200 different artesan beers and ciders, gourmet snacks and also Australian candy. Their website www.thebottleshop.hk lists their products. They also sell the delicious pies (chicken or beef) from The Globe Pub (Graham Street, Central). Their philosophy is – “pies go with beer”.

Turn right along the promenade where you may see fish and egg yolks drying in the sun and then crossover the road

to See Cheung Street. On the right is Loaf On Cuisine (49 See Cheung Street). It has no signage in English but you will be able to locate it due to all the reviews that they have placed outside. It has one Michelin star and has interesting items on their menu such as Minced Fish

in Pumpkin Soup and Sautéed Razor Clams. On your left you will see Kuro Vale, (G/F, 48 See Cheung

Street, Tel: 2792 0102) a great shop selling pottery by local artists. Also on this street is Colour Brown Coffee (G/F, 34 See Cheung Street) if you want to stop for a cup of excellent coffee.

Continue along See Cheung Street for one more block and turn right (where you see the sign for the Tin Hau temple) onto Sai Kung Tai Street (sign hidden by a tree). On your right

you will see D’Oli, a French Gourmet shop selling wine and cheese (21 Sai Kung Tai Street www.saiiltd.com).

Come out from D’Oli and go right then left (to the end) and you will find Mr Mak, a 98 year old man who has been making traditional Chinese tin letter boxes for 80 years. These letterboxes have real character and make a great souvenir. I purchased one for a friend (14 Main Street).

From Mr Mak’s shop turn left back onto Sai Kung Main Street, follow it round and you will come to Chinese Artistry (8 Sai Kung Main Street). Mr Cheung has run this shop for 10 years and you can buy lion, dragon or unicorn heads here. You can either buy them from the ones he has on display in the shop or he can make them to order.

From Chinese Artistry exit left, then turn left into the next small lane where there is a Chinese Medicine Shop on the corner. Continue to the end of this lane and on your left you will see a Tin Hau (Goddess of the Sea) temple. One of 70 Tin Hau temples in Hong Kong, it was built in 1910s and is particularly well preserved.

With the Tin Hau temple to your back walk up the steps towards Anthony’s Ranch (28 Yi Chun Street) - just look for the giant plastic cow with horns on the frontage of their shop. Keep going up the road until you reach Shun Kee City Houseware which will be on your left (6-10 Yi Chun Street). Sai Kung’s local expat community quaintly call it “Harrods” simply because like Harrods if you need something you will most likely find it here. The only thing they don’t have is pets.

Exit left and also on this street is the Sai Kung branch of

Goods of Desire (G/F, 2 Yi Chun Street, Tel: 2791 7122. Open daily: 11 am – 8pm). I purchased cute little post box magnets to go with the metal letter box purchased from Mr Mak.

Turn left out from Goods of Desire and left onto Man Nin Street. Walk pass the Dymocks (7 Man Nin Street), pass the HSBC ATMS and then right onto Po Tung Road. Here you will find Leisure Book Shop (Po Tung Road. Tel: 2791 9629/9831 5266. Open daily: 10am – 7.30pm). Open since 1999 this is an English language second-hand bookshop and it also sells second-hand CDs, DVDs and framed photographs of planes landing at the old Kai Tak airport.

By now you are probably ready for a break and so head back down to Yi Chun Street (where Goods of Desire was). Continue along and cut left through the basketball court to Olde Hong Kong Tea Cafe (51 Yi Chun Street, Tel: 2792 3890. Open: Tues – Sun noon – 11pm) which opened in April this year. Here you can purchase an alternative high tea set with sweet and savoury dim sum and Chinese tea. You can see photos on www.oldehongkong.com.

Exit the cafe and turn left walk pass the Sai Kung Market (67 Yi Chun Street). Continue along to the promenade where you turn left, continue walking and you will have returned to the minibus terminus.

What is ‘Frocks and Bubbles’? Read on!AWA launched our charity collaboration with LoveIt in

March 2013. Our mission? • Fabulous fashion and styleeventsof real value for our

members.• Funds for our charities and education and scholarship

programmes. We thought the name ‘Frocks and Bubbles’ nicely

captured the fun. Our first two events were sold out and more importantly, enjoyed by all. We want to spread the fun (and raise more money) so the next event will be our biggest – an in-house Fashion Show. More can attend but seats will still be limited – be in quick to reserve yours!

The FrocksLoveIt is a popular SoHo boutique. Catherine and Eloise

personally scout the world to bring us a fantastic range of designers with styles to fit sizes 0-16(US). Recently LoveIt launched its own collection to suit our lifestyles in Hong Kong. ‘The girls’ at LoveIt are style experts who take your body shape, coloring, personality and lifestyle into account and don’t want you to leave with a purchase unless you ‘love it’.

The BubblesWe make sure the bubbles flow at each

event. What’s better than looking at fab frocks and discussing style and fashion with a glass of sparkling wine in hand and close friends by our side? The answer is winning a fantastic prize on the night! Not only do we get a $300 voucher for having fun (that’s right, more than

the registration fee) but also LoveIt generously hands out fantastic prizes on the night. Lucky AWA members so far have received $1500 wardrobe vouchers and free hair styling sessions from The Firm.

Frocks & Bubbles = Fun & funds!LoveIt donates 10% of any purchase we make on the

night (and for a limited time after).Once we are noted as AWA-introduced, LoveIt will donate

1% of our future purchases to AWA’s Charities and Education fund.

Let’s face it: we spend most of our days in a chair. Does all this sitting leave you fatigued, stiff, maybe even in pain? Research suggests that the inactivity of sitting, even while being productive with something else, is a health risk and can slash years off your life. At today’s lecture, Dr. Alex Pak, an Australian Chiropractor who delivers health training courses, will teach us some basic ideas which can help make our days more energized and comfortable, even while we sit! Today we will explore rivers, villages, farmland and market towns in the northern New Territories starting at Tai Po Market Railway Station and following the shored-up Lam Tsuen River upstream towards Hong Lok Yuen. Making a detour around Fan Ling, we briefly stray onto the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail to link up with the Ng Tung River to check out some of the interesting old structures built by the Tang clan since the 17th century. Next we ride along the Indus River to the market town of Sheung Shui which we traverse on bike paths to reach the Sheung Shek River and the fertile Long Valley. En route, we catch a glimpse of Shenzhen on the Chinese side of the border. We pause for refreshments and explore temples and old houses in the hamlet of Ho Sheung Heung before heading south along the Sheung Yue River (aka Beas River). Beyond the Jockey Club lodge, we turn into a quiet agricultural community where we either cycle along narrow concrete paths or unsurfaced tracks. There is also a well-hidden Kwun Yam Temple to discover. We stop at the edge of the Fan Ling golf course for a relaxed cooked lunch before traversing more farmland to reach the bicycle paths near Fan Ling station. Continuing south we ride a little along the old Tai Po Road before crossing the KCR tracks and then head back for Tai Po - retracing our tracks for a couple of kilometers. Back along the Lam Tsuen River, we take a different route along bicycle paths back to the bike shop. This is a 35k trip where we will mostly ride along even leveled, quiet rural back roads. Please note you will not be able to rent bicycle helmets so you should bring your own if needed. Please wear appropriate biking gear and a backpack as this is easier to carry on a mountain bike. Bicycle rental is included in the price but lunch and refreshments will be at your own expense.

Eppie, one of the chefs and partners at EC Kitchen, is going to walk us through the various types of knives and cleavers that are most commonly used and teach us the proper way to use them. She will help us evaluate our own cooking styles to determine which knives we should have in our kitchen arsenal. After our lesson, we will have a light lunch and then taxi over to Shanghai Street, where we will visit one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most famous knife stores. We will be able to handle knives and cleavers to our heart’s content and get recommendations as to which ones are best for our personal cooking needs. This is a great chance to get educated and maybe even do a little Christmas shopping.

The question is not where you buy, but what quality you buy. This informative seminar is conducted by Celso Alejo, a certified Gemologist and Appraiser and owner of D’ALEJO. It will provide us with the facts about a broad range of familiar and not so familiar gemstones, how to understand quality which affects pricing, and the tricks some dealers use on the unsuspecting customer. A wide range of gemstones is shown to illustrate the subtle differences that greatly affect gemstone pricing. The information provided in this lecture and demonstration is invaluable as we travel and often have opportunities that seem just too good to pass up.
