Dear Projects Members, WCA Projects hopes that you are all doing well during these difficult times. This year will certainly be one of major social and economic upheaval causing major challenges to your personal and business lives. We hope that you are all staying safe and keeping your businesses running well. This year is certainly the year of cancelled events, and the 2020 WCA Projects conference in Hamburg will roll over to 2021. We are planning for May 15-17, 2021 before the Breakbulk Europe 2021 conference (May 18-20). We will share more details once we confirm our new contract with the existing Hamburg venue. WCA is already working hard to help members find air freight solutions for the extremely limited air cargo space issue due to passenger aircraft being sidelined. We have already helped some members successfully connect with airlines for charters and will help get the word out on other available air cargo sources where we are able to assist. We are also raising our total limit on WCA’s financial protection program from an aggregate $2 million to $3 million dollars. WCA is also not claiming ‘force majeure’ in our member-to-member payment guarantee program and will continue to support our members during these difficult times. Please continue to send us your cases for distribution as Project Spotlights, as well as any relevant company news you would like to share with the members. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions to help us continue improvement of the network.

31 March 2020, LONDON—Breakbulk Europe, the world’s largest event for the project cargo and breakbulk industry, has been postponed until September in light of the global novel coronavirus pandemic. The event will now take place at Messe Bremen in Bremen, Germany, from 29 September to 1 October 2020.

“We have been closely monitoring the impact of Covid-19 not only in Germany, but across the world, and have decided to move the event to September to ensure the safety of our customers,” stated Nick Davison, Portfolio Director for Breakbulk and CWEIME events, Hyve Group. “We know that this is the most important gathering for the breakbulk and project cargo industry and we want to be sure our customers can meet in a safe environment. The pandemic has had a significant impact on the global supply chain and bringing the industry to Breakbulk Europe will provide an opportunity for leaders to discuss the best way forward.”

To accommodate the new dates for Breakbulk Europe, Breakbulk Americas has been postponed to later in 2020. A new date will be announced shortly.

Meanwhile, Breakbulk Events & Media has launched BreakbulkONE, a weekly newsletter and web portal for industry updates around the effects and responses to the crisis. “Breakbulk events have built a reputation for hosting leaders across the industrial supply chain at the event conferences where they share insights and business strategies,” Leslie Meredith, Breakbulk’s Marketing and Media Director said. “We wanted to extend this support to provide a platform for industry members to share their own news by tapping into the resources of our media team who runs Breakbulk Newswire and Breakbulk magazine. During the holidays we engaged with Unifeeder to handle 26 x 40 foot OOG flat racks loaded with rotor-houses for windmills weighing up to 40 tons each.

Due to the large volume of this single consignment, the tight timelines, and to avoid storage charges, this time we chartered a smaller container vessel for this trip which is somewhat unusual and special.

Al-Bader Shipping (Kuwait) The work began with physical inspection of the cargo, processing the customs clearance with all necessary permissions and EX-Works, which included transportation, loading, cargo survey and double handling at port, loading it onto a chartered general vessel BBC California.

Al-Bader Shipping (Kuwait) completed the movement of six 40’ Open Top containers, three 45’ High Cube containers and three 40’ High Cube containers which were carrying the main body of one crane, along with booms and other accessories. The gross weight per container was approximately 27 Tons.

In addition to the last 12 containers that were shipped to Singapore, Al-Bader Shipping (Kuwait) also moved the main body of the crane loaded onto a MAFI trailer on a RO-RO vessel, whilst the 12 containers were shipped on a regular container vessel as duly agreed with both the shipper and consignee.

The A.R.T. Logistics team completed one more stage in a massive logistics project for Kazakhstan Energy sector at the end of 2019. The movement of 10 trawls, occupying almost the entire width of the access roads and crouching under power lines and engineering facilities, triggered real interest among local citizens.

EXG’s scope was chartering a break-bulk vessel with port handling in coordination with the shipper and clearing agent for 12 BG silencers, each ODC and heavy lift in nature along with 50 SOC’s containers.

Egyptian Global Logistics (EGL), The site was located about 60 km from Alexandria, Egypt. One of the most difficult obstacles was that the transformers had to be rotated 90 degrees before being installed on the foundations. The operation area was only 6.5 meters wide without ground pulling eyes.

UT Freight undertook a transportation project for two steel mill axes from Santander, Spain, to Taipei, Taiwan. These two axes weighed up to 80 tons each.

UT used a crane with a loading ability of 100 tons to hang and place the axes on two trailers and covered them with a plastic canvas to protect them from the rain.

RR Shipping Private Limited, India, completed the 2nd shipment of LONG LENGTH ALLOY STEEL SEAMLESS PIPES from Mumbai, India, to Genova, Italy, with help from WCA Projects member, OTIM s.r.l.

This shipment comprised 15 wooden cases containing over-length alloy steel seamless pipes that were loaded on a MAFI trailer. The client requested for us to arrange the lashing, choking, stuffing, and transportation of SS PIPES after they were well-secured and moved on the MAFI for onward shipment from Mumbai Port to Genova port.

Each box was 22.38 meters long. Due to its length, we had to use one 40’ flat rack container to extend the 60-foot MAFI. We used wooden planks to match the height on the MAFI so that the flat rack extension could be placed on the MAFI, giving them a uniform length, ensuring that the packages with tubes did not bend in any way.

Egyptian Global Logistics (EGL), The project includes one 650 MW steam thermal power plant to interconnect with the National Unified Power System (NUPS) through a 500/220 KV GIS switchyard. It is composed of one Rankine cycle sub-critical turbine generator unit with a nominal rated capacity of 650 MW, using natural gas instead of heavy fuel.
