Over the past four weeks since the last newsletter we have also enjoyed inter-houseBasketballandTouch,andcelebratedtheoutstandingsportingsuccessesbyourstudentsthisterminassembly,andatourre-vampedSportsAwardseveningheldthislastWednesday.Seelaterinthisnewsletterformoredetails.

Next term we begin with Year 4 and 6 Prelim Examinations and Teacher Only Days forprofessional development and quicklymove on to our 5th annual Darren Loh Cup footballfundraiser.Seeelsewherefordetails.

As theschooltermclosesthisweekwewishthestudentsandstaffparticipating inoverseastrips over the holidays a safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience. The trips include theSouthernAfrica,Cambodia,Vietnam,BaliandThailandservicetrips;theUniversity/BusinessStudiestriptoNorthAmerica;andthejuniorUKtrip.Manythankstothestaffwhohavegivenuptheirtimetogivethestudentsthesewonderfulopportunities.

Wealsowishallmembersoftheschoolcommunityasafeandrelaxingtimeof refreshmentwith increased quality time with families these holidays. With Year 4 and 6 PrelimExaminations in the first two weeks of Term 3 these students will also obviously need tobalancesomeholidaytimewithsustainedstudy.

CASandOverseasTripsJune2017It is the time of the year again when our Year 5 studentsembarkontheirCAS(Service)tripsinthemonthofJune.Therewill be 5 trips going out this June. The students have beeninvolvedintheplanningoftheirtripsincollaborationwiththeirpeers and teachers and have put in much hard work fundraisingforthevariousschoolstheyaretovisitandhelpoutin.NotonlywilltheyhaveachanceatfulfillingtheirCASoutcomesthrough these projects, they will also stand to gain theinvaluable experience of interacting and engaging with localcommunities. Indeed, this is the true IB spirit of being caringtowards others. There is much that our students can benefitfromgivingofthemselvestotheneedsofothersandwehopethattheyhaveameaningfultimeonthetrips.

In addition, two groups of students are also leaving foroverseas trips to the USA/Canada and the UK. The seniorstudentswillvisitvariousplacesinAmericatolearnmoreaboutBusiness,includingUCLAandBoeing,whilstthejuniorstudentsare visiting locations across the UK to learn more about itsgeographyandculture.

PSPWorkshoponCyberBullying'Oneinfoursecondaryschoolstudentsadmittedthattheyhavebulliedtheirpeersonlinewithinthepastyear,apollhasfound,while one in three said they have been victims of cyberbullying. These ranged from spreading rumours or viciousremarks about a person on social networks, to "defacing" aperson's picture and then circulating it online. One in fiveprimary school children, too, reported being "cyber bullied".The survey of 3,000 secondary school students and 1,900primary pupils was done by Touch CyberWellness, the mainagency that runs online safety talks in schools here inSingapore.

Thedataontheprevalenceofcyberbullying inSingaporewascollectedoverthelastyearaftera2012Microsoftstudyfoundthat Singaporehad the secondhighest rate - 58per cent - ofonlinebullyingworldwide,afterChina.Thetwocountrieswerethe only two of the 25 surveyed where bullying online wasmore pervasive than in the real world. Counsellors said thenumberofcyberbulliesamongyoungpeoplelookssettogrowfurther.

Statistics like these and reports on bullying incidents send achill through the heart of every parent. Bullying is an age-oldproblem,butadvances in technologysuchas theproliferationofsocialmediaappsandthesheerreachoftheinternetoffersbulliesnewwaysinwhichtoharassandabuseothers.Theverysametoolswhichweusetocommunicate,learnandentertainarealsousedtocauseharm.

Aworkshoponcyberbullyingforparentswasheldon20May2017. It was conducted by the school’s Guidance Counsellor,MsChantalRoux,whocoveredtopicssuchasthedefinitionofbullying/cyber bullying, signs and behaviours to look out for,and discussed avenues andmethods to get to grips with theproblem.MobileappnotAnoobiewasintroducedasaresourcetoaidparentstoprotecttheirchildrenfromonlinethreats.Theapp, launched by SingTel and Touch CyberWellness, featuresreal life accounts of online bullying and helpful content onresponsibleonlinecitizenship.MsChantalalsospokeabouttheschool policy on bullying, which includes the use of thetraditional disciplinary approach and the use of restorativepractice. Those who participated were given opportunities toshare their own experiences as well as contribute ideas onwhat parents, guardians, teachers, counsellors and studentsthemselvescandotopreventorstopbullying.While thoseofus present acknowledged that there aren't always easysolutions,weallagreedthatcommunicationandawarenessarekey.

We thank Ms Chantal for a well presented and informativesession.Asoneparenthighlighted,itisreassuringtoknowthatthe students of the school have a passionate andknowledgeablecounsellortogoto.

SouthEastAsianMathematicsCompetitionSome of our students participated in the South EastAsianMathematicsCompetition (SEAMC)hosted by the AliceSmith School and Garden International Schoolin KualaLumpurfrom2Marchto5March.Thestudentswereselectedand prepared for thecompetitionby Ms Jasmine Teo. MrDamienChiang,MrFrankYip,MsTanShiaoSerandMrsGraceChuiaccompanied the students to the competition. Thestudents’rankingsareshownbelow:

Our best students were Yang Tzu Hsien from 6-OLD and KuoChun-Yuanfrom6-GHKwhoranked9thand24threspectivelyintheindividualcategory.

Next year,ACS (International)will be jointhostof theSEAMCeventwithUWC(EastCampus).

SingaporeandAsianSchoolsMathOlympiad2017The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO)caterstothetop40%ofthestudentpopulationanditaimstoarousestudents’interestinmathematicalproblemsolving,andto developmathematical intuition, reasoning, logical, creativeand critical thinking. SASMO is devoted and dedicated tobringing a love forMathematics to the students in secondaryschools. The top 40% of the participants receive an AwardCertificate and amedal (Gold for top 8%, Silver for next 12%andBronzefornext20%).

On 5 April 2017, 39 students (Years 1 to 4) from ACS(International) took part in SASMO 2017. AnnualSchoolProduction:RoaldDahl’sTheWitchesEarlier in the year, various departments in the school cametogether to begin preparations for our annual schoolproduction, and presented the fruits of their labour in thesecond week of May. The production was well received byadults and children alike, and received high praise for thequalityoftheperformanceandprops.

Congratulations to the staff and students who made theproductionaroaringsuccess!

TheDirector’sTakeForour firstproductionwithouta livemusical element, I encouraged thestudents to challenge themselves asperformersandtaketheaudienceonajourney into the world of “TheWitches” through dialogue, suspense,movement and characterisation - andthey did not disappoint! The delicatebalance between the technical effectsin this showand the liveperformanceart was a fragile one but perfectly

executed, to add another dimension of intrigue for theaudience. This group of students is an extremely unique andvaluedone.

Iamextremelyproudofthecastandcrewof“TheWitches”astheyhavesurpassedmymostextremeexpectationsofwhatwecould achieve and I extend a sincere and heartfelt thanks toyouall,forallthatyouhavedone.

AfewwordsfromtheCastandCrewThis is my third year being part of an ACS (International)production,asIwasinvolvedin"Guys&Dolls”inYearoneand"IntotheWoods”inYeartwo.Thebestthingaboutbeingintheproductionisalwayshavingsomethingtolookforwardto. I'vealsobeenabletobuildsomanyincrediblefriendshipswiththecast and crewover the yearswhich I'm so thankful for. It gotreally challenging getting closer to opening night with all thetestsanddeadlinesthatweweregiven,butwestillmanagedtopull through. I've learnt that Theatre, by its very nature,demands that anyone working on a project is an integralmemberoftheproductionteam.Thefinalproductcouldneverbe successfully completed without every member workingtowardthesamegoal.

CKSandWillingHeartsOne April Sunday, Mr Rajan (Housemaster of CKS) took 6studentsfromCKStoserveatWillingHearts,avolunteer-basedcharity organization that prepares and distributes meals toneedy people across Singapore. They worked hard packingmealsfrom5.30amto8am,afterwhichtheydeliveredthefoodpacketstohomesintheCommonwealthandAngMoKioareas.ItlookedliketheyhadatrulymeaningfulSundaymorning.

InternationalStudentBBQNightThe International Students Committee were the hosts of theevening.Attendeescouldchoose towatchTheDarkKnightorcompeteinasmall-scaledodgeballtournament.

The games were relatively short, but were nothing short ofexciting. The victorious teamwas handsomely rewardedwiththe ever popular prize of Starbucks gift vouchers. The movieended soon after, and everyone descended on the feast. Thetable was piled high with chicken wings, satay, grilledmushrooms and more. Before we knew it, the food was alleatenup,thusendingthenight inasatisfyingway. Itwasn'tadramaticeventbyanymeans,buteverybody lefthappy, so itwasajobwelldone.

SportsCCAAwardEveningThe Sports CCA Award Evening (sponsored by the PSP) wasorganised by the PE Department in the last week of term tocelebrate the sportingexcellenceandwidevarietyof sportingactivities in our school. These range from football to rugby,bodybuildingandfemalefitness.Studentsarealsoallowedtopursue other sports externally, and are jointly supervised byboth the school and the external coaches. Some Sports CCAsalsowelcomestudentswhoarebeginners,givingallstudentsinthe school anopportunity tohaveaccess toawide varietyofsports.

MrPaulParker, formerEngland InternationalandManchesterUnited Footballer was in attendance as the Guest of HonourandGuestSpeaker.

During the event, sports awards were given out to studentswho had been voted as the MVP of their teams, as well asSportsman and Sportswoman of the Year (divisional prizes).Congratulationstoallthestudentsfortheirexcellentteamworkandeffort.
