campaign programme was kick started. Refresher Training for Middle Level Extension Officers of State

Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Marketing and Seed

Certification was held in virtual mode.

Technology Business Incubator (TBI), Directorate of Agribusiness Development, TNAU,

Coimbatore organized a programme during which the TBI agripreneurs were handed over with the first th

instalment for the start-ups. The 40 Board of Studies (PG Education) was conducted by the Dean, School

of Post Graduate Studies and Chairman, Board of Studies (PG Education).

Field performance of greengram varieties and pre-release culture, redgram grafting experiment

and wild species of Vigna and Cajanus were observed in the Department of Pulses, CPBG, Coimbatore.

TNAU entered into an MoU with Dalhousie University, Canada for dual degree programme. FC&RI,

Mettupalayam signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with TNPL (Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Paper

Ltd.) which would help in identifying new genetic resources with precision silvicultural techniques.

th The 50 Research Council meeting of the TNAU was held on 25.08.2020 through webinar in which

the Government Nominees and representatives presented their views.

I participated in the International Webinar on Covid19 pandemic on World Health and Wealth

organized by the Centre for Post Harvest Technology, AEC&RI, Coimbatore on 06.08.2020 and Advances

in Rice Researches for Food Security & Environmental Sustainability organized by Tamil Nadu Rice

Research Institute, Aduthurai on 13.08.2020. I also participated in the webinar on Farm Mechanization,

Challenges and Policy Options for Agriculture Sector Growth and Transformation in India.

As a trustee member, I attended the Board of Trustees meeting of MSSRF, Chennai on 07.08.2020. I thparticipated in the Foundation Day and 27 Annual General Body Meeting of NAAS on 13.8.2020 and the

Finance Committee meeting and Board of Management meeting of TNAU on 19.08.2020.

I also participated in the second meeting of the High-Level Committee constituted to advise the

State Government on medium term policy response to revive the state economy from the adverse thimpact of COVID-19 pandemic and 27 Foundation Day and Kisan Mela of ICAR – National Research

Centre for Banana on 21.08.2020.

Active participation in the ICAR – NEP meeting organized on 26.08.2020 under the chairmanship

of Hon'ble Union Minister for Agriculture and the Director General, ICAR on implementation of New

Education Policy 2020 with special reference to Agricultural Education unraveled many issues.

In the recently announced Union Public

Service Commission (UPSC) 2019 results, five

students of TNAU exhibited their outstanding

performance in the examinations. Ms. S. Bharani,

an alumnus of TNAU passed the UPSC exam 2019

attaining 58 rank. She completed B.Sc., t h

(Agriculture) at Agriculture College & Research

Institute (AC&RI), Coimbatore during 2010-14.

Ms.S.Sangeetha, who completed her B.Sc.,

(Agriculture) at AC&RI, Madurai in 2014 scored

the 499 rank. Presently, she is a Police officer th

undergoing DSP training. Ms. S. Abinaya, who

secured 559 rank in the UPSC examination, th

completed her Agriculture degree at AC&RI,

Coimbatore during 2010-14. Ms. S. Malliga,

secured her B.Tech., (Biotechnology) in TNAU

during 2015 secured 621 place. Mr. N. Venkatesa st

Prabhu, an Indian Forest Service ( IFS)

Probationary officer is presently undergoing

training at Dehradun and he completed the

Under graduate degree in A griculture at

ADAC&RI, Trichy in 2014. He cleared UPSC exam

2019 in the second attempt with 751 rank. On this st

momentous occasion, Dr. N. Kumar, Vice-

Chancellor, the staff and students of TNAU whole

heartedly appreciate their hard work and wished

a bright and promising career.

Mushroom Training through online

An online training on 'Oyster mushroom

cultivation' was conducted at the Department of

Plant Pathology, TNAU, Coimbatore on 05.08.2020

through Zoom link covering classes and video

demonstrations on commercial cultivation, pest

and disease management and marketing aspects.

A total of 253 participants belonging to farming

community, students, business persons,

entrepreneurs, mushroom growers and woman

self help group members from 20 districts of

Tamil Nadu and other states viz., Maharashtra,

Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Himachal

Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala participated in

the training programme. The queries raised by

the participants were addressed to build

confidence among them to startup mushroom

enterprise.

14.08.2020 in which Dr. Rattan Lal, Director,

Carbon Management and Sequestration Center,

Ohio State Univers i ty, USA interacted.

Dr. P. Parvatha Reddy, Former Director (IIHR),

Bengaluru was the guest speaker for the webinar

on 'Advances in Nematode Management'

organized on 17.08.2020. Dr. Sathish Kumar,

University of Arkansas, USA was the invited

speaker for the webinar on 'Gene Editing in

Plants using the CRISPR / Cas9 approach in rice'

organized on 31.08.2020.

Besides, an International Webinar on

'Covid 19 pandemic on World Health and Wealth'

was organized by Centre for Post Harvest

Technology (CPHT), Agricultural Engineering

College and Research Institute (AEC&RI),

Coimbatore on 06.08.2020 wherein Dr. N. Kumar,

Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, Coimbatore in his Key

note address explained the Covid 19 situation and

how TNAU helped the community by introducing

nano sanitizers. Dr. B. Sesikeran, M.D., Former

Director, NIN (National Institute of Nutrition),

Hyderabad; Mr.Ramesh Ramiah, Principal

Portfolio Manager, World Bank, USA; Dr. Vijaya

Raghavan, Ph.D., McGill Professor, Canada;

Dr. Kannan Krishnan, Ph.D., Chief Scientific

Officer of Robert-Sauvé Occupational Health

and Safety Research Institute, Canada and

Dr.K .M.L.S.T.Mo orthi , DM (Nephrology),

Community Hospital, Indiana, USA explained the

ways and methods to cope up with current

Covid 19 pandemic. Dr. B. Shridar, Dean, AEC&RI

welcomed the participants and Dr. Z. John

Kennedy, Professor and Head, CPHT proposed

vote of thanks. Nearly 560 registered participants

spread all over the globe attended.

The Centre for Agricultural and Rural

13.08.2020 wherein Prof. C. Ramasamy, Former

Vice-Chancellor, TNAU outlined the policy

changes in agriculture over years. The Guest

Speaker, Dr. Vijay Paul Sharma, Chairman,

Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices

(CACP), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers

Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi

discussed about the recent reforms by the Central

Government, institutional issues, agricultural

price policy, trade policy and need for

strengthening the agricultural infrastructure and

agri-logistics. Dr. N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor,

TNAU del ivered the inaugural address .

Visit of District Collector to TNAU

Shri. K. Rajamani, IAS, Coimbatore

District Collector inaugurated the Arid zone fruit

orchard in the presence of Dr. N. Kumar, Vice-

Chancellor, TNAU . on 14.08.2020 Further, the

Collector made a visit to the University Botanic

Garden to witness the various renovation

o p e r a t i o n s . He a l s o v i s i t e d t h e P l a n t

Conservatory which has been given a facelift. A

tree planting programme was taken up as a part

of his visit and traditionally and historically

important native tree species were planted in the

B o t a n i c G a rd e n b y t h e d i g n i t a r i e s . A

demonstration was conducted on QR (Quick

Response) coding of the plant species in the

TNAU Botanic Garden to enable effective

dissemination of scientific knowledge about the

plants to the visiting public, students, researchers

and garden enthusiasts. Dr. A.S. Krishnamoorthy,

Registrar, Dr. L. Pugalendhi, Dean, HC&RI and

other University officials participated.

Endowment Webinar Organized by DNRM

Experiments for A ssessing Soil Carbon

Sequestration' was organized by the Department

of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry

(SS&AC), Directorate of Natural Resource

Management (DNRM), TNAU, Coimbatore on

14.08.2020 jointly with School of Post Graduate

Studies, TNAU, Coimbatore under Endowment

webinar series. A thought provoking lecture was

presented by Dr. Rattan Lal, Director, Carbon

Management and Sequestration Center, Ohio

State University, Colombus, USA. He is a laureate

of the World Food Prize, 2020, Glinka World Soil

Prize, 2019, Japan Prize, 2019, U.S. Awasthi IFFCO

Award 2019 and GCHERA World Agriculture

Prize, 2018. In his lecture, he narrated the global

classical long term experiments and described

the soil and nutrient management strategies for

enhancing the soil carbon stocks. Dr.J.S.Kennedy,

Dr. K.S. Subramanian, Director of Research,

TNAU, Coimbatore felicitated the speaker and

narrated the research works on soil carbon at

The Independence Day was celebrated in

T N A U o n 1 5 . 0 8 . 2 0 2 0 . D r . N . K u m a r ,

Vice-Chancellor, TNAU hoisted the National flag

and delivered the Independence Day speech. He

recalled the eternal memories of the martyrs who

sacrificed their lives for achieving independence.

He also appreciated the services rendered by the

TNAU scientists for the farming community

during Covid-19 pandemic period. He presented

an encomium to the TNAU Doctors, farm

labourers and sanitary workers for their fruitful

contribution during the pandemic. The efforts of

Deans/Directors and faculty members in

conducting online classes and Agricultural

Graduate Students Conference (AGSC) online

was highly appreciated. The University Officers,

Scientists, Staff of TNAU campus participated.

Crop Boosters Complex Inaugurated

Crop Boosters Complex, an exclusive

TNAU Crop Booster Production unit, was

declared open by Dr. N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor,

TNAU on 15.08.2020 at the Department of Crop

Physiology in the presence of the Registrar,

D i r e c t o r o f Re s e a rc h , D i r e c t o r ( Cro p

Management), University Officers, Heads of the

Departments and Scientists. The Crop Boosters

viz., TNAU Coconut Tonic, TNAU Pulse Wonder,

TNAU Groundnut Rich, TNAU Cotton Plus, TNAU

Maize Maxim and TNAU Sugarcane Booster will

be produced in the Complex and distributed to

the needy farmers and also through State

Department of Agriculture, Constituent Colleges

of TNAU, Research stations, KVKs and NGOs

across the State. This complex has an exclusive

facility to address the physiological and

nutritional problems in various agricultural and

horticultural crops.

Parthenium Free Campus campaign programme

on 17.08.2020 at TNAU Main Campus He removed

the Parthenium in the farm premises and

instructed the scientists and farm workers to

maintain and adopt periodical management

strategies to remove Parthenium and make

Parthenium free campus. Further, he distributed

safety kits to labourers and requested everyone

to involve to make a Parthenium free campus.

Agribusiness Incubators (R-ABI) centre at the

Technology Business Incubator (TBI), Directorate

Coimbatore during 2019-2020. About 325

Agripreneurs have enrolled as members in TBI

and they are provided with handholding support

for technical guidance, market linkages, financial

linkages, grants from government institutions,

testing and quality certification, in-house office

space, business promotional activities, patenting

services and trade mark registration. On

17.08.2020, the had an interactive agripreneurs

session with Dr. N. Kumar, Vice–Chancellor,

TNAU and the first installment of the grant was

released to the selected Agripreneurs.

University, Canada for dual degree programme

(FC&RI), Mettupalayam signed a Memorandum

of Agreement (MoA) with TNPL (Tamil Nadu

Newsprint and Paper Ltd.) on 28.08.2020.

in identifying new genetic resources with

precision silvicultural techniques to augment

Vice-Chancellor's visit to ARS, Bhavanisagar

Dr. N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU,

visited the different experimental trials and

blocks of Agricultural Research Station (ARS),

Bhavanisagar, on 27.08.2020 and offered various

suggestions for improvement. The Vice-

Chancellor advised for cultivation of Bamboo /

Coconut/ Horticultural fruit trees/ forest species

as per the land suitability. It was also instructed to

implement mechanization for all crops. Vice-

Chancellor witnessed the use of mechanical

transplanter, power weeder and drum seeder in

rice and suggested for giving a wider publicity.

traditional rice varieties was inaugurated. A book

on Traditional Rice Varieties compiled by

Scientists of KVK, Needamangalam was released.

The seeds of Traditional Rice Varieties were

distributed to the farmers. Hon'ble Minister

appreciated the ef forts of the centre in

conserving traditional varieties. The Director,

TRRI informed that Nel Jeyaraman Traditional

Rice Centre is getting established at KVK,

Needamangalam. The Dean, PAJANCOA & RI,

Karaikal stressed the need for breeding

programme for conserving the traditional

varieties. A round 235 farmers including

traditional rice cultivators, Line Department

officials participated. The KVK also organized a

Farm Machinery Mela on 06.08.2020 with the

objective of creating awareness among farmers

to use various machines and implements. Nearly

130 participants including farmers and farm

women took part in the event.

Demonstration on Mechanization in Farmers'

Field under TANII Project

Under the TANII (Tamil Nadu Innovative

Initiatives) project operated at the Department of

Agronomy, AC & RI, Madurai, awareness cum

demonstrat ion on rotary mulcher was

conducted at Arittapatti village, Madurai on

17.08.2020. Dr. E. Subramanian, A ssistant

Professor (Agronomy) delivered a lecture on

farm mechanization – scope and need.

Dr.A .Gurusamy, Professor (A gronomy)

highlighted the modern farm mechanization and

its uses. Mrs. A. Veerammal, President of village

panchayat presided. The Scientists also

conducted a 'Demonstration on zero till sowing

AC&RI, Eachangkottai

AC&RI, Eachangkottai , Thanjavur

organized a Students' Motivational webinar titled

'You Can' by Dr. C. Sylendra Babu IPS, Director

General of Police (DGP) – Railways, Director, Fire

and Rescue Services, Tamil Nadu wherein he

interacted with students of TNAU on 17.08.2020.

Dr. R . Rajendran, D ean welcomed the

participants and highlighted the purpose of the

webinar. Dr. N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU

inaugurated the Webinar and delivered inaugural

address. Dr. C. Sylendra Babu delivered Chief

Guest address. As an Alumnus of TNAU, he

motivated the students for appearing in UPSC

exams. Nearly 300 students from 14 constituent

colleges and 29 affiliated colleges of TNAU

participated in the webinar and interacted with

the Chief guest. Dr. T. Senguttuvan, Academic

Coordinator, AC&RI, Eachangkottai proposed

vote of thanks.

Sadbhavana Diwas observed by TNAU NSS

Sadbhavana Diwas pledge was taken by

the faculty of constituent colleges of TNAU and

the NSS volunteers at home along with their

parents, friends and relatives on 20.08.2020.

Promoting National Integration and Communal

Harmony among people across religions,

languages and regions was the theme. The

observance of 'Sadbhavana Diwas' is to avoid

violence and to promote goodwill among the

people. Totally, 900 NSS volunteers and 600 family

members took the pledge.
