seek new and innovative ways to improve the quality of life for its residents. In 2003, 41 wind turbines were constructed between Edgeley and Kulm making a positive impact on both communities.
Chicago is nationally recognized as the “Windy City,” but locals know the Kulm area is one of the windiest in North Dakota. Embracing the changes to the area, Kulm now holds Windfest Days the third weekend in August each year. WindFest offers fun for all ages with lawn mower races, a parade, craft fair, live music and kids’ activities.
Many changes have occurred since the town began 125 years ago. However, the hospitality of the people from Kulm has remained the same. For more information about Kulm’s parks, recreation, businesses and services go to: www.kulmnd.com. n
Small Town with a Big HeartKULM
Kulm, North Dakota is a town that proves when area residents take a proactive approach, they can help their small town not only survive, but thrive. From the newly built high school to the largest wind farm in North Dakota just a few miles outside of town, Kulm lives up to its nickname, Small Town with a Big Heart.
Located in LaMoure County, Kulm was founded in 1892. It was established as the western edge of the Soo Line Railroad, and was named in honor of the German city, Kulm, by a German from Russia immigrant. The new town offered an ideal location for the railroad, as it closely borders Dickey, McIntosh and Logan counties. The town grew steadily and farmers from all four counties brought their grain to Kulm to head east on the rail cars. The railroad expanded westward in 1898, however the town continued to boom. Kulm’s population reached its highest point of nearly 750 in the 1930’s.
Today, Kulm is home to approximately 354 people. Although the population is declining, community leaders continue to

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) conducts a survey of rural youth, ages 13–23, to gauge their telecom usage and help rural communications companies meet their needs and demands. This is an opportunity for students to voice their opinion and assist the direction of future telecommunications services in their communities. The more responses the more accurate the survey will be.
This online survey www.frs.org/survey can be completed in less than ten minutes. Spread the word on social media using #mytakeonrural. Each time a student shares or retweets us with using #mytakeonrural they’ll increase their chances of winning the $200 gift card. Danielle attended the University of Mary and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in information technology management. While pursuing his degree at Mary, he played football and served as the captain of the team his senior year. He previously worked at Bobcat in a Co-Op position for IT. DRN’s ReadiTech crew has teamed up with area golf courses to once again offer the Annual G.O.L.F. Classic. This year’s tournament is being held on July 8 and 9 at four area courses: the Grand Rapids Memorial Park Country Club, the Oakes Golf Club, the Lisbon Bissell Golf Course, and the Forman Golf Course.
G.O.L.F. is open to all golfers 16 years of age or older. Golfers are encouraged to put together teams of four, but teams of two and three will also be accepted. Tournament golfers will enjoy 9-holes of golf at four of DRN area’s finest golf courses.
An overall champion will be awarded as well as prizes being paid out to each flight. There will also be a hole-in-one contest. Watch for more information and register online, go to www.drnreaditechgolf.com. n

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) conducts a survey of rural youth, ages 13–23, to gauge their telecom usage and help rural communications companies meet their needs and demands. This is an opportunity for students to voice their opinion and assist the direction of future telecommunications services in their communities. The more responses the more accurate the survey will be.
This online survey www.frs.org/survey can be completed in less than ten minutes. Spread the word on social media using #mytakeonrural. Each time a student shares or retweets us with using #mytakeonrural they’ll increase their chances of winning the $200 gift card. Chicago is nationally recognized as the “Windy City,” but locals know the Kulm area is one of the windiest in North Dakota. Embracing the changes to the area, Kulm now holds Windfest Days the third weekend in August each year. WindFest offers fun for all ages with lawn mower races, a parade, craft fair, live music and kids’ activities.

Small Town with a Big HeartKULM
Kulm, North Dakota is a town that proves when area residents take a proactive approach, they can help their small town not only survive, but thrive. From the newly built high school to the largest wind farm in North Dakota just a few miles outside of town, Kulm lives up to its nickname, Small Town with a Big Heart.
Located in LaMoure County, Kulm was founded in 1892. It was established as the western edge of the Soo Line Railroad, and was named in honor of the German city, Kulm, by a German from Russia immigrant. The new town offered an ideal location for the railroad, as it closely borders Dickey, McIntosh and Logan counties. The town grew steadily and farmers from all four counties brought their grain to Kulm to head east on the rail cars. The railroad expanded westward in 1898, however the town continued to boom. Kulm’s population reached its highest point of nearly 750 in the 1930’s.
Today, Kulm is home to approximately 354 people. Although the population is declining, community leaders continue to

DRN will host a free, one-day summer tech camp for area students ages 12 to 17 on Wednesday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at its headquarters in Ellendale.
This event will expose students to careers in technology and offer an inside look at how the internet works. Students who attend the camp will receive hands-on experience building a website, developing a gaming app, and video production.
