RULES, PROCEDURES, CURRICULA AND POLICY MATTERS:

2007-16-Senate-01: Welcome to the New Members of the Senate as per the NIT Act. 2007. The

2007-16 -Senate-2: Policy on award of Gold and Silver medals to students with repeat courses in career.

It has been noticed that some students qualify to receive medals even after repeating some courses. A question has arisen whether they should be eligible for medals and prizes. The following provision in the regulations was put up to the Senate.

"When a student secures an F grade or misses an examination, and appears either supplementary or backlog paper (closing one step in the grade except P in some cases, getting full credit in deserving cases) he is eligible for medals and prizes. When a student repeats a course, attends classes and gets full credit (e.g. summer course or in a following semester) he is not eligible for medals and prizes".

The Senate modified the above provision in the regulations as follows:

When a student secures an 'F' grade or misses an examination and appears either Supplementary or backlog paper (losing one step in grade in some cases, getting full credit in deserving cases having attendance 95% or above), he/ she is eligible for medals and prizes. Student securing 'P' grade originally (which does not get reduced) either in Supplementary or in backlog paper is not eligible for medals and prizes. Further, when a student repeats a course, attends classes and gets full credit ( e.g. summer course or in a following semester) he/she is not eligible for medals and prizes.

2007-16-Senate-3: Nomination of Board Members. As per the NIT Act., 2007, one Professor and one Asst. Professor or a Lecturer should be nominated by the Senate.

2007-16 -Senate-18 Case of Sri Sanjeeb Mohanty, Sr. Lecturer (EE) on assigning course work.

Sri Sanjeeb Mohanty, had completed M.Tech degree before 8 years from the date of enrolment to the Ph.D. programme of the Institute. As per Ph.D. regulations he needs to complete atleast 20 credits of course work before his registration. But his DSC has assigned only 04 credits of course work (Seminar-I - 02 credits and Seminar-II - 02 credits). RPEC has recommended this case to the Senate for final decision.

The Senate requested HOD, EE to take necessary action to transfer the credits completed by Sri Mohanty at IIT Kharagpur to NIT Rourkela and to check the relevance of those course works to the field of his research work here and the final proposal be put up to Chairman, Senate for approval.

D. DISCIPLINE, ENDOWMENT AND STUDENT AFFAIRS:.

2007-16 -Senate-20: Report on Disciplinary Cases.

The Institute standing Disciplinary Committee has considered IO cases. In 4 cases, the committee has recommended dropping the charges because the concerned students have either graduated or have left the Institute. Director, in capacity of Chairman, Senate, has accepted the recommendations. In 6 cases, dealing with RAGGING incidents, Director has not accepted the recommendations in view of the recent rulings of the Supreme Court and directions of the Ministry ofHRD. The mater was put up to Senate for:

a) working a guideline for awarding punitive measures, andb) deciding on the measures to be taken in instant cases.

The Senate approved the 4 cases (in l st paragraph) for dropping charges because the concerned students have either graduated, deceased or left the Institute. In other six cases(2

nd paragraph), it was decided that the InstituteStanding Disciplinary Committee should review the decision in accordance with the guidelines given by the Supreme Court and MHRD. The recommendation of the disciplinary committee will be sent to the Chairman, Senate for approval.

E. MISCELLANEOUS:

2007-16 -Senate-21: Shailalata Memorial award for the best Alumnus of Chemical Engineering student.

l) The "Shailalata Memorial Award for the best Alumnus of ChemicalEngineering of NIT Rourkela is instituted by Prof. G. K. Ray,Chemical Engineering Department in the memory of his late beloved

mother. It will be awarded annually to an alumnus of the Department working any where in India for his/ her outstanding contribution to Chemical Engineering profession during the past five years.

2) The award comprises of a cash prize of Rs.6000/-, a citation, acertificate, a shawl and a silver medallion.

3) Rs.1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh) only shall be deposited with the NITas a fixed endowment money and the interest accrued will be spent forthe award and other expenses. The terms, eligibility criteria etc isenclosed in Annexure.
