History of New Era University

New Era University (NEU) is a private educational institution in the Philippines, run by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC). Its main campus located at No. 9 Central Avenue, New Era, Quezon City, in the Central Office Complex

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

of the INC. It has several branches around the Philippines, including one in San Fernando City, Pampanga, in Lipa City, Batangas and inGeneral Santos City, South Cotabato.

Founded in June 17, 1975, it was known as the New Era Educational Institute, and was located in Echague, Quiapo,Manila, along Carlos Palanca St. It initially offered only secondary education (high school) butlater expanded in 1977 to serve technical and vocational courses under its Center for Livelihood and Skills Training (CLST). It also offers graduate (i.e. master's and doctoral)programmes.

In 1981, it was renamed New Era College after the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS) granted collegiate status, and later in June 1995, to its present name, New Era University, when the Commission on Higher Education(CHED) granted university status.

It is run by the INC for the educational needs of the members although it does accept enrollments from non-INCmembers as well. Under the university umbrella, it runs the College of Evangelical Ministry, where INC trains male members to become ministers.

Other colleges include: The College of Engineering and Technology, College of Nursing, College of Business Administration, College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Education, also the College of Law and School of Graduate Studies.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

Beginning as the New Era Educational Institute (NEEI) in June 1975, the school offered secondary education in a building purchased by the Iglesia Ni Cristo in Quiapo, Manila. Twenty-three teachers and 466 students pioneered theschool’s operation.

On June 1977, NEEI was formally incorporated under Republic Act 1459 as a private non-stock, non- sectarian, non-profit educational institution aiming to develop academic excellence, professional responsibility, and socialawareness founded on genuine Christian principles.

During the school year 1977-1978, NEEI offered vocational and technical courses under the Non-Formal Education Program.

In 1978, the Collegiate Department opened in Diliman, Quezon City occupying the third and fourth floors of the Evangelical College building. The first and second levels served as the training center of the Church for would-be ministers. Twelve collegiate courses were initiallyoffered: Bachelor of Arts (AB) major in Economics and in Mass Communications, Bachelor of Science (BS) major in Psychology, BS Industrial Education, BSBA Management, BSBA Banking & Finance, BSBA Marketing and the two-year Junior Secretarial Course. In the field of Engineering and Technology, BS Civil Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering,BS Electronics & Communications Engineering, BS Management &Industrial Engineering, and BS Mechanical Engineering were offered.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

In 1981, NEEI assumed the name New Era College (NEC) after it was granted recognition by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.

In 1982, NEC held its first commencement exercises and conferred the degrees of Bachelor of Science (major in Psychology), BS Industrial Education, and BS Business Administration on twelve graduates.

The Graduate School was established during the school year 1983-1984 offering the course Master of Arts in CollegeTeaching. The programme on Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education also started this year.

In 1984, NEC opened its Pre-school and Elementary Department.

On May 10, 1986, the new and permanent campus of New Era College along St. Joseph Street, Milton Hills, New Era, Quezon City was inaugurated. In view of the then peace and order situation surrounding the vicinity of the Manila Campus, the High School Department and Non-Formal Education unit transferred to the new campus in New Era, Quezon City. This brought together all the departments of the college under the roof of the new four-storey building.

In 1994, NEC established branches in City of San Fernando, Pampanga and in General Santos City. During the school year 1997-1998, these extensions started offering high school education as first year classes were opened

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

initially. On June 5, 1998, the General Santos Citybranch inaugurated its very own campus in a half-hectare land area.

On June 30, 1995, the college was granted university status by the Commission on Higher Education. Theschool was officially named New Era University.

The New Era University started a year-long Silver Jubilee celebration with the inauguration of the NEU Lipa City campus on a sprawling four-hectare land in Brgy. Marawoy on May 5, 2000.

The Lipa City campus has four buildings, includingtwo five-storey edifices, built on a total land area of 27, 687 sq. meters in Villa San Jose, Marawoy, Lipa City. It initially offered Pre-School and Elementary Education.

The New Era University College of Law opened in June 2000 after the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) granted it a permit to operate for the first year level of the course. The opening coincided with the 25th anniversary of NEU, which was established in 1975.

Inspired by the attainment of university status and motivated by the challenge of excellence in education, New Era University submitted itself to voluntary accreditation. In 1996, the Association of Christian Schoolsand Colleges Accrediting Agency, Inc. (ACSC-AAI) granted Level 1 accreditation to the School of Graduate Studies

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

(SGS). On the same year, the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities - Commission on Accreditation (PACU-COA) awarded Level 1 accreditation to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Education (CEd), and College of Business Education and Administration (CBEA). SGSand CEd both attained level 2 accreditation in 1997. The Elementary, Pre-school and High School Departments were awarded Level 1 accreditation in 1998 while CAS and CBEA qualified for Level 2 accreditation in 1999.

After another accreditation visit, the Pre-school, Elementary and High School Departments were given Level 2 recognition.

The peacefulness, orderliness, brotherly love and reverence for the words of God that govern the day to day order of things in the school inspire the development and maximization of the students’ potentials in different fields. The Elementary Department and the High School Department have garnered laurels in creative and journalistic writing competitions in quiz bees, in the performing arts, and even in sports. A most notable achievement was when an NEU school grader won in the United Nations Population Fund International Poster Making Competition held in New York, U.S.A.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

The College Department has also produced its own breed of achievers. The NEU varsity teams have contributed players tothe Philippines’ national volleyball and basketball teams, as well as to the Philippine Amateur Basketball League. NEU engineering graduates have placed in the top ten list of engineering board examinations. NEU made news in the national scene when one of its graduates garnered the numberone post in the 1992 Professional Board Examination for Teachers taken by 142, 133 examinees nationwide. The Accountancy program of the College of Business Education andAdministration has also performed well in the CPA board examinations.

Side by side with its academic functions, NEU also fulfills its socio-civic responsibility towards the larger community that lies beyond its walls. The students, faculty and staff members, and administrators all do their share in conducting community extension service. A very impressive project is the Balik-Aral program for out-of-school youth conducted by NEU in close coordination with theDepartment of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) and the Iglesia Ni Cristo Social Services Department. This Program brings classes for the out-of-school youth right in their own vicinity using the local facilities of the Church, the expertise of NEU-trained teachers and the teaching-learning modules from the DECS.

New Era University submitted itself to voluntary accreditation. Today, four programs of the University enjoy

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

Level II step 1 reaccreditation with the benefit of full curricular deregulation (Master of Arts in Education, Business Education and Administration courses, Arts and Sciences Courses, and Education Courses).

The students, faculty and staff members, and administration conduct community extension services. The Balik-Aral Program for out-of-school youths is conducted by NEU in coordination with the Department of Education Culture

and Sports, now the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Iglesia ni Cristo Social Services Department. This programmebrings classes for the out-of-school youth right in their own vicinity using the local facilities of the Church, the expertise of NEU-trained teachers and the teaching-learning modules from DepEd.

With the CHED implementation of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) in June 2002, NEU received commendations from town mayors and community leaders for itsimplementation of all three NSTP components: Literacy Training Service, Community Welfare Service Training, and Reserved Office Training Corps. New Era University will soonhave its own University Sports Complex and stadium on its Bocaue Campus being built as part of Philippine Arena complex in Ciudad de Victoria at Bocaue, Bulacan. It will also establish two more colleges---College of Medicine and College of Architecture.

Who would have thought that after almost a

month, I will learn different things during my

trainings inside Estrellas Nex Care. Those

experiences will remain forever in my heart. The

people I have met inside, the nurses, the admin,

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

and the patients, there will be always a part of

them inside of the person I am now. Patients

taught me things that I will never learn in

other fields. Their stories will always leave a

mark inside of my personality; their experiences

will always be my guide.

The first time we went for the orientation to

the Estrellas Nex Care, for our clinical setting

on the job training, I thought it was terrible I

judged the facility quickly as we entered and it

is because of the smell and the little spacious

place of the clinic. Next, are the nurses who

can’t even afford to give us a warm welcome,

they don’t even smile. I know it has nothing to

do with our trainings, but I don’t think poker

faces from the admin wouldn’t give us any happy

spirit inside. I felt scared by that time; it is

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

my second time around to be surrounded by

patients with severe mental disorders, first was

our field trip.

I felt like I don’t want to be here. Except

when we were one by one introduced to the

patients, and everything has changed. These

patients as I talk to myself are also human,

they can feel, well feels to the extreme and

they give empathy too. They were all smiling to

us, waving and greeting us. I felt the warm

welcome of the patients, and my point of view

has changed.

As we were introduced to the patients, we

were also oriented to the vision, mission and

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

core values of the nexcare, that day was also

the day when one patient approached me and told

me that he likes me to be his friend. He was

Tatay Joel. I gave him a warm introduction of

myself as he came up to me, he did the same too.

It has been a long day for the both of us, as we

shared our stories of our lives to each other.

He told me about his background, how did he get

here to the nexcare, who are his friends, what

are his hobbies or pass time, he even opened up

to me his family.

Yet, of course, before all the acquaintances

happen, I consulted first to the nurses about

Tatay Joel and to the other patient’s

background. Tatay Joel was one of the patients

who have a

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

severe schizophrenia disorder. One nurse told me

that Tatay Joel tried to kill himself with a gun

on his head, but luckily the bullet missed and

Tatay Joel lives. Though tatay joel still have

the disorder. I don’t know the further setting

of his background, what I know about him, is

that he is nice guy, well, to me. Even though,

his stories were kinda really out of reality,

like he once told me that he once fought to

Jesus Christ and Lucifer and he won. Etc.,

I tried to look that I believe him, but actually

I was really trying hard not to laugh about it.

Anyway, we had lot of good times together, we

played chess and we were even partner for Pinoy

Henyo.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

I forgot to mention, that our group, for the

training were assigned to group dynamics. We

were the responsible for the daily activity for

the patients. We present games and give reward

to the winner. Our games include Stop Dance,

Pinoy Henyo, catch the balloon and Calamansi

Relay.

Mrs. Marcia Santos Estrellas, one of the owners

of Estrellas Nex Care was our guide all through

our duty inside her psychiatric ward. She

explained well the rules inside. She shared some

stories regards to the some patient’s case. She

also help us to managed our program for our

Socialization Day.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

We gave them biscuits for the reward and they

love it. Hansel, Fita, bread pan, and so much

more. Everyone were enjoying every time our

group started to associate with the patients.

What I like about Estrellas’ patients is that

they are willing and they are cooperative to the

group dynamics. Patients inside like to

interact. They will try to reach out for you. We

spent half of the month with the clients with

our group dynamics and everything seemed alright

by the end of May. The relationship to the

clients even grows deeper.

Socialization day, May 30; before this day

come, we and my group are assigned to different

area, the foods, the beverages, the games and

the decoration.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

I was tasked by Mrs. Marcia to supervise the

decoration part. I bought the materials a week

ago that will be used for the socialization day.

I bought Japanese paper, colorful papers like

art paper, I bought some glue too, I bought

balloons, and I bought some glitters. We came by

2 in the afternoon in the clinic to set up

things. I have provided already the bandiritas

that were going to use, I made it a week before.

Angel, Anjo, Emman, Rizza and Jobel and I got to

create more designs in the afternoon. Then

Glocelle and the rest decoration group came, and

then we all started to decorate the area.

We created some logos that were going to use

for the greetings, we created also some banner

for the clinic’s name, and also the school name.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

We folded some Japanese paper for the design

too. By 4 in the afternoon, the food and

beverages arrived. For the food, we prepared

Adobo and Spaghetti. For the drinks, we prepared

Black Gulaman. It was delicious.

The games group also arrived by that time,

but there was one problem. There were no prizes.

There were no rewards for the games, someone

forgot to provide and buy it. So me and Angel,

since we were finished to decorate, we quickly

went to the nearest grocery store, Savemore.

We quickly bought some Fita, bread stick,

bread fan, Hansel and some Potchi. All these

were gonna be used as the rewards for the game

later. We went back to the clinic and walked

fast as we could. We also thought that it was

gonna rain, so we decided, that since we were

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

going to celebrate the event outside, we moved

inside to celebrate Socialization instead.

As we reach our destination to the Estrellas,

the foods were not still arranged to the table.

And it was driving me nuts that time, coz it is

passed 4 and everything were still unsettled.

Though, I was glad that the rented Videoke had

arrived already. So the patients were all taking

their time singing and dancing.

I and some group prepared the food inside.

Thanked God because some staff from the kitchen

helped us to segregate the foods for the

patients and for the staff. Now, everything was

established.

We started the event by 5 o’clock. We started

by our games outside. It kinda sucks because it

didn’t rain after all. Our first game was

Palayok. Patients are blindfolded and asked to

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

hit the Palayok. Everyone was enjoying. The next

game was the catch the egg, next was Sabitan,

and next was talong race.

As the patients were enjoying their dawn to

the videoke, we were about to serve their

dinner, spaghetti and adobo and a cup of rice

plus their medicines. We, our group mates didn’t

had time to eat, so we all just sang a song and

enjoy while patients were eating.

Seeing that they were all finished for their

dinner, we sang a little goodbye song to them.

Everything was appreciated here, and I was glad

it was all over. My clinical on-the-job-training

was done.

My clinical ojt were costly, literally

expensive. Since we were the one who will

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

provide rewards with our own money, but it

doesn’t matter, I know we will be remembered.

Thanked God I was finally over dealing with

the nurses inside the clinic, but Im going to

miss the patients inside. They gave me so many

values in life. Their stories will always give

impact to me. They made me realized that I was

blessed. I will always be forever thankful to my

life.

 INTRODUCTION

On the job training or OJT is one method

by which students is given a chance to apply

the theories and computations that they have

learned from the school. It also helps the

students to acquire relevant knowledge and

skills by performing in actual work setting.

Colleges and universities require their students

to undergo such training

within a specific number of hours as part

of the curriculum. For the students, an OJT or

internship program provides opportunities

togo through the actual methodologies of

a specific job using the real tools,

equipments and documents. In effect, the

workplace becomes a development venue for a

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

student trainee to learn more about his

chosen field and practice what he has learn from

academy. On the other hand, an effective OJT

program also benefits the companies who accept

trainees. First OJT or intern provides

additional manpower for a lesser labor cost than

a regular employee. Most of them are all eager to

learn the ropes so chances are high that they will

cooperate.

Employers can use this internship strategy as

a method in recruiting new employees. Since the

trainer or the supervisor can follow the

trainees’ progress, he can gauge based on

performance, behavior and attitude if the

trainee will make a good recruit after the

completion of his internship

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

First and foremost, I would like to express

in depth gratitude to Insular Life for giving me

an opportunity to become one of their team

member. I am very glad and proud to be one of

the team members in District Sale Manager. I

would like to dedicate my most sincere gratitude

to host manager Mrs. Rossana Pangue for

opportunities given, unceasing patience,

guidance, priceless knowledge and supports given

to me during the internship. I would also like

to express my thanks giving to Ms. Zyra H.

Hular, my practical training supervisor from the

company for giving me advice and guidance during

the internship period and also in the

preparation of this final industrial training

report. Lastly, Thank God for I am able to

complete my training successfully. Through this

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

industrial training, I have gained a lot of

invaluable knowledge which I can never learn in

books and most importantly, I have discovered my

own potential and interest.

CHAPTER III – DAILY ROUTINARY

ACTIVITIESDOCUMENTATION

Last 2014 month of May 5 to May 27, 2014,

I had 100 hours at Insular Life San Pablo

City Branch. It was my second OJT, I had a blast

experience and I really had fun those days.

Before we start our OJT we still have to

undergo to a short briefing before we really

start our OJT, that short briefing excite me

a lot because they told us that we can receive

allowance from the establishment and we have

also free meal, which is, big advantage to us to

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

work hard because almost company don’t have

that. After the briefing they told us to

report immediately on the date given to us,

and then I was toured around the building so

that we will know where to log in and log

out. After that I was immediately assign to

our first department which is District Sale.

During that day as a assistant I was really

nervous because I don’t know what to do, but

when the secretary of the manager arrived

my fears were gone. And after that day I really

have a high respect for all the secretary in the

world because their task is not easy just for

us to be comfortable.

On that day I really want to cry because

it’s very hard to do all those task, but I

did my best because I know I can do it and I

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

can finish it. After one week I was transferred

in the Front Desk Department, all I can say is

no challenge for me as a trainee because I

didn’t experience the hard work like I used to

do in the guidance dept but it’s ok for me

also coz I really experience relaxing moment.

The last department I encountered. I can say

that I learned a lot in all dept. In that

department I really enjoy working with my co-

colleagues same as the staff in the company,

they trained me very well. I encountered

different kinds of people in my practicum days

and this experience helps me

a lot to become a better psychology

degree holder

someday, and those days are really

unforgettable.

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

I learned that on-the-job training is

not just only a subject to be passed or a

requirement to be completed but on-the-job

training is an opportunity to show what skills,

talents and techniques that the student learned

from the school and also an opportunity to

experience the life outside the campus. We

have to responsible enough on the task given

to us. You should accept your weaknesses. Time

is very important. As early as you do your work,

you finish it an earlier time that you can

do such things by helping others. You

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

should not be afraid to ask questions if

you do not know what to do to avoid faultiness

in your work.

STRONG POINTS

My strong points are I do believe

in God, I can make  people laugh with me

until they die. I am kind and helpful to others

New Era UniversityCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

and I am very patient. I am a good

listener and listen to

others' problems with intent. I do not feel hur

ting anybody and I believethat my life is not

for myself only; it should be utilized to serve

and help others.

WEAK POINTS

My weak points are I’ve got a sharp

tongue sometimes, I can’t adjust easily. I’m

usually a cool person but when things get on

my nerves, I can’t control my temper but I’m

trying to control now. I trust people

easily, and sometimes when I have problem I

cry easily, in short I am emotional. And I am

fully aware that I am not perfect and cannot be

perfect.

I can say that my relationship between the

staff in the hotel is so great because I

didn’t have any fight or enemy in

their establishment. Because I know we can’t

please everyone to like me and I know how to

adjust to avoid chaos. And I really control

my temper especially when it’s too busy

because I don’t want to be stress.
