My Journey Through

Ramadwaan2021

Note to parents

We are pleased to present to you ‘My Journey Through Ramadwaan’, a book mainly aimed for 6-12 year olds but which may also be beneficial for the younger ones (with additional help) or slightly older children.

Proper Islamic Education is critical for our children’s success in this life and in the Hereafter. It is therefore our duty to demonstrate to our children how Islam is a beautiful religion, to guide them and help them to grow up into human beings who will follow the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad n. And what a wonderful time to start this journey than the blessed month of Ramadwaan!

The best way a child learns is when he/she is active in his/her own learning. ‘My Journey Through Ramadwaan’ has been designed with this in mind. Each day of the blessed month of Ramadwaan is as follows:

1. A specific topic is covered such as Roza, Salaah, Quran2. The ‘Did you know?’ section provides interesting information related to Islam,

Prophet Muhammad n or other pious people.3. An activity for children to do, such as craft activities, crosswords, quiz which

reinforces the learning of the topic.

The book is therefore interactive and we encourage parents to be involved with their children, be it for helping with the topic or for completing the activities. It will provide you with quality time with your children and wonderful learning opportunities. You may wish to select the activities that are most appropriate for your children based on their age and abilities.

One of the ways of motivating and engaging children is the setting of goals. ‘My Journey Through Ramadwaan’ therefore starts off with a preparation for Ramadwaan and setting of goals for children. You are encouraged to help your child to do that according to his/her age and ability and to motivate him/her during the whole month by providing him/her with simple rewards such as stars.

We have a daily tracker for children to keep track of their actions each day. Help your child to do so. We have also included the tracker for the whole month at the end of the book, which may be more convenient to print. The hollow stars can be coloured in by your child to show which actions he/she has completed.

We have tried to keep the language simple as far as possible, but your child may need help in understanding some lessons, so please do help him/her where required.

We hope that the lessons and activities provided in this book will enable our young children to start their way on a rich learning journey which will continue beyond Ramadwaan.

May Allah accept your efforts and that of your children, accept our Duahs and make this Ramadwaan book beneficial to all. May Allah accept the efforts of all those who contributed to the making of ‘My Journey Through Ramadwaan’. This book has been written to the best of our knowledge, and under the help and guidance of our Scholars. We apologise for any mistakes that may have inadvertently been left.

Translations of Quran verses have been taken from the English translation of Kanzul Imaan published by Darul Uloom Pretoria.

We wish you all a blessed Ramadwaan. Ramadwaan Mubarak!

ABOUT RAMADWAANRamadwaan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and is a very important month for Muslims around the world. During this month, we fast from dawn to sunset, abstain from sins and increase our good actions.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. The month starts and ends based on the visibility of the moon (Hilal). There are either 29 or 30 days in each month.

A new day in the Islamic calendar starts at Maghrib time. The first day of Ramadwaan begins when the moon is sighted at Maghrib, and we start the month with Taraweeh prayers.

Why is Ramadwaan special?

The month of Ramadwaan is split into 3 parts, called 'Ashrah:

1) First 'Ashrah (Days 1-10): The Days of Mercy

2) Second 'Ashrah (Days 11-20): The Days of Forgiveness

3) Third 'Ashrah (Days 21-29 or 30): The Days of Seeking Refuge from the Hellfire

For every good

action, we get more

rewards

The Quran was

revealed in Ramadwaan

The Gates of Heaven are opened and

the Shaytaan are chained

Allah accepts

our Duahs

There are special

Ibaadah that we do during Ramadwaan

(Roza, Taraweeh, I’tikaaf)

Moon Sighting

The moon cycle lasts between 29 and 30 days. On the 29th day of each Islamic month, at Maghrib time, we search for the moon crescent. If the moon is sighted, this is the start of the next Islamic month.

On the 29th of Shabaan, we need to go for moon sighting. If the moon is sighted, we start the month of Ramadwaan. If not, we observe the 30th day of Shabaan, and start the month of Ramadwaan on the following day.

When the moon is sighted, we read this Duah:

Try searching for the moon with your parents. You can do this from your home. Remember, the new moon crescent is very thin and difficult to spot on the first day.

Allahumma Ahillahu Alaina Bil Yumni Wal Barakah

O Allah! Let this month be for us (a period) of security and beliefs.

DAY 1 - Fasting (Roza)Fasting during the month of Ramadwaan is the 4th Pillar of Islam. Fasting is one of the best Ibaadah for Allah, and we get a lot of rewards for it. Fasting cleans our sins and brings us closer to Allah.

Pillars of Islam (Arkaanul Islam)

Shahadah

Salaah

Zakaat

Fasting (Roza)

Hajj

Do you know what each Pillar of Islam is? Write it down in the table below.

7

What do we do during Ramadwaan?

Only you and Allah will know if you are truly fasting. For example, if you eat something secretly no one will know except Allah. Allah is Aalim-ul-Ghaib, He knows everything.

Have you tried fasting before? If you haven't, try it, even for half a day!

Through fasting, we understand the suffering of the poor and those who are hungry. Alhamdulillah! Allah has blessed us with so much - our loving family who take care of us, tasty food, a house to live in. We should always be grateful to Allah and continuously thank Him.

The great saint, Shaykh Abdal Qadir Jilani a was born on 1st Ramadwaan, in Baghdad (Iraq). He is a Wali of Allah (a friend of Allah) and a Sayyed (a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad n ).

During Ramadwaan, even as a baby, he refused to drink milk from Sehri to Iftar, as if he was fasting!

Did you know?

FastingWe start fasting from dawn and we end our fast at Maghrib time. All day, we do not eat

or drink.

Bad actionWe stay away

from bad actions for example lying,

fighting

Good actions and ibadaah

We increase our good actions for example helping our parents and reading Quran.

In the name of Allah and with the Blessings of Allah

Don’t forget to eat with your right hand!

At Sehri time, don’t forget to make Duah. Insha Allah your Duah will be accepted.

Day 2 - SehriWe start our fast with a meal in the morning before dawn. This meal is called Sehri. This is a Sunnah of the Prophet n and there is a lot of blessing in it for us.

Before eating we read this Duah:

We make an intention to fast at the time of Sehri, by reading the following Niyyah:

رت مت وما اخ هم أصوم غدا لك فاغفر لي ما قد اللAllahumma asoomu ghadal laka faghfirlii

ma qadamtu wamaa akhartu

Allah! I will fast for You tomorrow, therefore forgive me my future and past sins.

All praise is due to Allah who fed us and gave us to drink, and made us Muslims.

After eating, we read the following Duah:

10

1. One of the doors of Jannah is called Ar-Rayyan. Only those who fast during Ramadwaan will enter Jannah by this door.

2. If you forgot to say “Bismillah” at the start, read this instead:

3. It is Sunnah to sit on the floor and eat. How about trying this Sunnah for one day during Ramadwaan?

DAY 3 - IftarWe end our fast at Maghrib time. This meal is called Iftar.

It is good to break our fast as soon as we hear the Azaan for Maghrib.

Start with Bismillah, and break your fast with dates or water.

Right after Iftar, read the following Duah:

لت هم لك صمت وبك آمنت وعليك توك اللل مني وعلى رزقك افطرت فتقب

Allahumma laka sumtu wabika aamantu wa alayka tawakkaltuwa ala rizqika aftrartu fataqabbal minnii

O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You, and I have complete trust in You, and I broke my fast

with the food given by You, therefore accept it from me.

14

In a Hadith, Hazrat Anasa said, “The Prophet n used to break his fast with fresh dates before he prayed. If he did not find fresh dates then he would use dried dates. If he did not find that also he drank a few sips of water”. (Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhee)

At Iftar time, don’t forget to make Duah. The Prophet n said the Duah of a fasting person is not rejected.

Hazrat Fatimah d passed away on 3rd of Ramadwaan. She is the youngest and most beloved daughter of the Prophet Muhammad n, and the chief of all women in Islam.

She was also known as Zahra (she was the flower of the Prophet Muhammad n and had a radiant face) and Batool (she had pure character).

DAY 4 - SalaahSalaah (Namaz) is the second Pillar of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad n received the Salaah as a gift directly from Allah on the night of Mehraj.

The Quran says (Surah 20, Verse 14):

لوة لذكرى وأقم الص

It is a form of thanking Allah

It is the best of deeds

It brings us closer to Allah

It erases our sins

It is our key to Jannah

We perform Salaah 5 times everyday. It is important to perform Salaah properly and at the correct times.

Wa aqimis salawaata li dhikrii

“and establish Prayer for My remembrance.”

17

The times of each Salaah depend on the position of the sun and will be different in each country.

Do you know how to perform Salaah? Ask your parents to watch you pray and correct you.

On the night of the Mehraj, Allah wanted to gift us 50 daily Salaah. Knowing that this would be difficult for us, the Prophet Muhammad n asked Allah to reduce it to 5. But when we pray 5 Salaah a day, we will still get the rewards (Thawaab) of 50 Salaah!

DAY 5 - TaraweehTaraweeh is a special Salaah prayed only in Ramadwaan. It is a very important Sunnah called Sunnah e Muakkadah.

We pray Taraweeh after Esha and before Witr. There are 20 Rakaats, prayed 2 by 2. After every 4 Rakaats, we take a short break.

Usually, men pray Taraweeh in Jama’at at the Masjid and women pray at home. In some Masjids, the Imam will complete a whole Khatam Quran during Taraweeh in Ramadwaan. There are a lot of blessings when we pray in Jama’at.

Because of the coronavirus, we must stay home and we cannot go to the Masjid. So, we pray Taraweeh at home with our family.

Try to pray some Rakaats of Taraweeh. You can also read or listen to the Quran. There are a lot of rewards for reading and even listening to the Quran.

Did you know?

The Prophet Musa p made the following Duah to Allah. We can make this Duah when we are asking for something good from Allah.

رب إني لما أنزلت إلي من خير فقير

There are many Duahs that we can find in the Quran. The Duahs that the Prophets did are very special and we should try to remember them and read them.

Rabbi innee lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeerun

O my Lord, I am in need of that food which You may send down for me.

That night, a Sahaba called Hazrat Abdullah Ibne Zaid a had a dream, in which the Angel Hazrat Jibraeelp appearing as a person taught him the wordings of the Azaan and Iqaama. The next morning, he rushed to tell Rasulullah n about his dream of the Azaan. This option pleased Rasulullah n and he called for the Sahaba, Hazrat Bilalato come. Hazrat Bilalahad a very strong and beautiful voice and he gave the first Azaan.

On hearing the Azaan, the Sahabas rushed to the Masjid. Several of them had the same dream during the night. It was then decided that the Azaan would now be the call to Salaah, and it continues to be so even today.

DAY 6 - AzaanIn the early days of Islam in Madina, Prophet Muhammad n and his Sahabas (Companions) faced a problem - how will people know the times of the Salaah to be able to come to the Masjid for Jama'at?

They all gathered to discuss this issue and suggested ideas such as ringing a bell, blowing a trumpet or raising a flag on top of the Masjid. But the Prophet Muhammad n was not happy with any of the ideas.

1. Right after you were born, the Azaan and Iqaamat were given in your ears. This is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad n .

2. When we hear the Azaan, we should stop everything we are doing and listen carefully to the Azaan. Right after the Azaan, remember to make Duah.

Allahumma rabba haazihid-da’watit’taammati was-swalaatil qaa-imati aati Muhammadil waswiilata

of Qiyaamah. Verily You do not do anything against Your promise.

25

There is a lot of Thawaab (rewards) for giving Azaan.

• Perform Wudhu• Stand in a high place, facing the Qibla• Place your hands flat on your ears, or your index fingers in your ears

DAY 7 - Cleanliness Cleanliness is very important in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad n said that cleanliness is half of our Imaan.

We need to keep our body, our clothes and the place where we pray clean.

As Muslims, there are special ways to clean ourselves called Wudhu ( - ablution) and Ghusal ( - full body bath).

We usually perform Wudhu before performing Salaah and before touching the Quran. When we perform Wudhu, we wash away dust and dirt from our body.

Did you know that Wudhu also cleans us from our sins!

Before you start Wudhu, read the following Niyyah:

وضوء غسل

يطان أ لرفع الحدث، أعوذ بال من الش أتوضحيم بسم هللا العظيم حمن الر جيم بسم هللا الر الر

والحمد ل على دين اإلسلمAtawaddwa-ou-liraf’il hadath.

A-’ouzoubillaahi minash-shaitwaa-nir rajeem. Bismillah-hir-Rahmaa-nir-Raheem.

Bismillahil ‘azwime walhamdoulillahi ‘ala deenil Islam

I am performing Wudhu to remove all impurities. I seek refuge from Allah against the Evil Shaitaan. I start in the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. I start in the name of Allah the Greatest

and all praises are for Allah who granted us the religion of Islam.

27

The Prophet Muhammad n used to be very careful not to waste water during Wudhu.

The Prophet Muhammad n said: “Do not waste water even if you were at a running stream.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Water is a blessing from Allah and we should not waste it, for example when we have a shower or brush our teeth.

Did you know?

When the Prophet Muhammad n used to perform Wudhu, the Sahabas (Companions) would rush to collect the water from his Wudhu. They would drink this water and wipe this water on themselves.

DAY 8 - AllahAs Muslims, we believe that there is no God but Allah. Allah is the only One worthy of worship.

Allah is the Creator of everything - this whole world, the sun, moon, seas, human beings and animals.

Allah also created a world unseen to us - the Angels, the Jinns, Jannah (Heaven), Jahannam (Hellfire).

Allah sent Messengers (Nabi) to guide human beings on the right path. Our guide is the Prophet Muhammad n and the Quran is the message sent to us from Allah.

Allah does not look like us. We can never imagine Him in a physical description.

Allah is closer to us than we can imagine. He loves us, even more than our parents do. He wants us to be obedient. He rewards us for every effort we make to be good and to please Him.

The Prophet Muhammad n was born in the city of Makkah, on Monday 12th

Rabbi Ul Awwal. He was born in the best of tribes (Quraysh) and the best of families (Banu Hashim).

His father’s name is Hazrat Abdullah a and his mother’s name is Hazrat Aminad. His grandfather, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib a named him Muhammad n - it means “the praised one”.

At the time the Prophet Muhammad n was born, lots of miracles happened. The stars lowered themselves and a bright light appeared in the sky. The palace of Kisra (the king of the Persians) shook and its balconies collapsed. The Persians used to worship fire. Their fire that remained on for 1000

years switched off. Lake Sawah in Persia (now Iran) dried up.

The Prophet Muhammad's n childhood was not easy. His father passed away just before he was born, and his mother passed away when he was 6 years old. His grandfather Hazrat Abdul Muttalib a then looked after him, but also passed away when he was 8 years old. He was then looked after by his uncle, Abu Taalib. In Arabia, children were sent to nurses in the desert to be looked after. Children who lived in the desert grew up stronger and healthier. The Prophet Muhammad n also grew up in the desert of Arabia, and was looked after by Hazrat Halima .

One day, while the Prophet Muhammad n was in the field with other children, two strangers dressed in white came to them. They were Angels. They opened his chest and filled his heart with the Light (Nuur) of Allah. They then closed his chest and disappeared.

Lots of other miracles happened during the Prophet Muhammad's n childhood. Stones used to make salaams to him and trees would bend out of respect for him.

The Prophet Muhammad n was known as As-Saadiq (the truthful - he always spoke the truth) and Al-Amin (the trustworthy). He was loved and respected by all.

DAY 10 - Life of the Prophet n in MakkahRasulullah n used to go to the cave of Hira in Makkah to think about Allah and pray to Him. One night, in the month of Ramadwaan, the dark cave was suddenly full of light - the Angel Hazrat Jibraeel e came to visit him and said: " " (Iqra), meaning “Read”. The Prophet Muhammad n received the first revelation - Surah Al-'Alaq.

These are the first verses revealed:

The Prophet Muhammad n started spreading Islam in Makkah. It was very difficult. The Makkans did not want to accept Islam. They boycotted those who became Muslims - no one spoke to them, no one sold anything to them, and they did not have food and water.

As life was getting harder for Muslims in Makkah, Allah instructed them to leave Makkah and to move to the city of Madina. This is called Hijra. The Islamic calendar starts from the year of Hijra of the Prophet n from Makkah to Madina. The Prophet Muhammad n travelled with his friend, Hazrat Aboo Bakr a. They completed the journey by camel. The Prophet Muhammad's n camel was called Qaswa, it was his favourite camel!

It was a long and dangerous trip, but the Prophet Muhammad n and Hazrat Aboo Bakr a were not scared. They knew Allah was with them.

Hazrat Khadija d is the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad n and the mother of Hazrat Fatimah d. She was a successful businesswoman and our beloved Prophet Muhammad n used to work with her. She was very impressed by his honesty and beautiful character, so she asked to marry him. She was the first person the Prophet Muhammad n told about the revelation and she immediately accepted Islam.

Hazrat Khadija d passed away on 10th Ramadwaan. The Prophet Muhammad n was very sad when she passed away, and the year she passed away is called the Year of Sorrow.

The Prophet Muhammad n bought a piece of land and started constructing a Masjid and his house next to it. This Masjid is called Masjid An-Nabawi (The Masjid of the Prophet n). While his house was being built, he stayed at the house of Hazrat Aboo Ayyoob Ansaria.

The Muslims who had left Makkah were called Muhajiroon (Immigrants), and the Muslims from Madina were called Ansaar (Helpers). The Muhajiroon had left all their belongings in Makkah when they moved to Madina. The Prophet Muhammad n asked each Ansaar to accept a Muhajir as his brother, and to share what they owned with their Muhajir brother. The Ansaar were very generous and happily accepted this decision.

An Islamic city was now established in Madina with the Prophet Muhammad n as its leader. Finally, the Muslims were able to practise Islam openly and without persecution.

Even as leader, the Prophet Muhammad n was a very humble person. He used to visit the sick, help the poor, wash and sew his clothes. He had such a good character that everyone liked him and trusted him, even the non-Muslims!

The area between the Prophet Muhammad’s n house and his Mimbar is known as Riyadhul-Jannah (Garden of Paradise). If you pray there, it is as if you have prayed in Paradise. Duahs made in Riyadhul-Jannah are accepted.

DAY 12 - Helping OthersOur beautiful religion teaches us to help others where we can and to give in charity. We can do this through Zakaat and Sadqah.

Zakaat is the 3rd pillar of Islam. It means “to clean” in Arabic, as it cleans our wealth and our hearts. It is compulsory for Muslims who possess sufficient wealth to give some of their wealth every year to the poor Muslims. Many people give Zakaat during the holy month of Ramadwaan as we get more rewards during this month.

Sadqah is also a form of charity and is voluntary. It is not just about giving money to the poor and needy. Sadqah can also be in the form of small deeds that you do for someone without expecting anything in return. It is Allah who gives us the reward for it. The Prophet Muhammad n taught us that even smiling is a form of charity.

How can we give in charity?

Whatever we have is from Allah. When we give to others who are in need, Allah is very happy with us. We get a lot of blessings from Allah, and Allah gives us even more.

Saving some of our pocket money to give to

the poor and orphans

Buying food and clothes for the poor

Giving away some of our toys or clothes

to poor children

Hazrat Uthman a is the 3rd Khalifa in Islam. He was known as Ghani because he was rich and very generous. He used to spend his wealth to help Islam and those in need.

DAY 13 - Our NeighboursIslam encourages us to treat our neighbours in a kind way, whether or not they are Muslims. Our neighbours are those people who live close to us. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad n taught us to be kind to our neighbours, to help them, to share our food with them, not to disturb them and not to be rude to them.

The Prophet Muhammad n said: “A believer is not one who eats his fill while his next door neighbour goes hungry.” (Bukhari)

This means that we should always make sure we check if our neighbours are well and help them when they are in need.

For example, if you have trees in your garden from which you obtain fruits, it is good to share some with your neighbours.

Making your neighbour happy is a good deed, and Allah will give you a lot of reward for that.

Did you know?

On the day of Judgement, Allah will ask the Angels: “Where are my neighbours?” The Angels will ask Allah: “Who are your neighbours?”. Allah will reply: “Those who regularly go to the Masjid”. (Sharhe Muslim)

47

Today, let’s do something kind for our neighbour. You can choose one of the following:

1. Pick fruits from your garden and send them to your neighbour.2. Help your parents to prepare Iftar and share it with your neighbour.3. Make a card for your neighbour. You can include a little message to

check if they are doing well, and to let you know if they need any help.

DAY 14 - DuahDuah is a form of Ibaadah. Duah is a way for us to talk to Allah and to ask Allah to help us. Everything that we have is from Allah. Allah is so generous that even without asking Him, He gives us food, drink, a home, a loving family and so many other things. But, Allah loves when we call to Him, we ask Him to protect us, to forgive us and to give us blessings in our life.

In the Quran, Allah says (Surah 2, Verse 186):

Wa izaa sa-alaka ‘ibaadii ‘annii fa-innii qareeb. Oujeebou da’watad-daa’i izaa da’aan

And (Oh Beloved) when My servants ask you concerning Me. Indeed I am near. I accept the prayer of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

واذا سالـك عبادى عنى فانى قريباع اذا دعان اجيب دعوة الد

Allah is always listening to us. Sometimes, our Duahs are not accepted immediately. But Allah knows what is best for us, and will grant our wishes at the right time.

How to make Duah:1. Make Wudhu and sit in a clean place2. Raise your hands and start with Bismillah3. Praise Allah: Subhanallah4. Read Darood on the Prophet Muhammad n5. Ask Allah for forgiveness: Astaghfirullah6. Thank Allah for what you have: Alhamdulillah7. Make Duah - ask Allah for what you want8. When making Duah, remember to make Duah for yourself,

your parents, your family and for the Muslim Ummah

49

DAY 15 - ParentsKindness to our parents is very important in Islam and it is even mentioned in the Quran and the Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad n . After Allah and the Prophet Muhammad n , it is our parents that we should love the most and be the most respectful to.

How can we be kind to our parents:

Speak nicely to them

Help them at home

Listen to them

Thank them for all the good they do for us

Make Duah for them and thank Allah for having blessed us with good parents

Allah likes those who are kind to their parents.

DAY 16 - Importance of knowledgeAs Muslims, it is our duty to seek knowledge. The very first verse from the Quran that was revealed is “Iqra”, meaning “Read”.

The most important knowledge that we need is about Allah and our duties as a Muslim. We always seek knowledge for the pleasure of Allah. Another type of knowledge is one that is not directly related to Islam but that can be used in good ways. For example, if you study to become a doctor for the pleasure of Allah and to help the sick, Allah will reward you for it.

There is a lot of reward for sharing useful knowledge that you have learnt. This is especially important for Islamic knowledge.

The Prophet n said: “The best of charity is when a Muslim man gains knowledge, then he teaches it to his Muslim brother.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

As Muslims, we must respect and honour our teachers as they are giving us the best of gifts - knowledge. We show our gratitude to them by thanking them and making Duah for them.

Duahs for Knowledge1) From the Quran (Surah 20, Verse 114):

2) From Hadith (Sunan Ibn Majah):

رب زدني علماRabbi zidnii ‘ilman

O my Lord increase me in knowledge.

تقبل عمل م با و رزقا طي افعا و هم إني أسألك علما ن اللAllahumma innii as-aluka ‘ilman naafi’an

wa rizqan tayyiban wa ‘amalam mutaqabbalan

Allah! I ask you for beneficial knowledge, good provision and acceptable deeds.

Did you know?

The Islamic world prospered under the rule of the Prophet Muhammad n, the Khalifas and Muslim rulers during the Islamic Golden Age.

Hazrat Umar a was the 2nd Khalifa in Islam. He ruled the Islamic world for 10 years, and during this time, Islam spread to many parts of the world. The Muslims made a lot of progress and became very successful. This is because they continued to search for knowledge for the pleasure of Allah, and use their knowledge in good ways to benefit everyone.

Although Hazrat Umara was so successful as a ruler, he remained very humble. He wore simple clothes and lived in a simple house. He even used to walk in the streets of Madina at night to make sure the people of Madina were safe.

56

Activity: Write about yourself

Beneficial knowledge helped Muslims to practise Islam and to improve people’s lives. For example, the invention of clocks helped to know the prayer times. The development of medicine and surgery helped to cure the sick.

Many Muslims have used their knowledge to help us become better Muslims and to improve our lives.

Write about what you want to achieve. Does it help you to become a better Muslim? How can you help others when you have learnt something?

DAY 17 - Hazrat AishadHazrat Aisha is the wife of the Prophet Muhammad n and the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad’s n Companion and best friend, Hazrat Aboo Bakr a. She was extremely intelligent and had learnt a lot about Islam from the Prophet Muhammad n. A lot of what we know today about Islam is from the Hadiths reported by Hazrat Aisha . She is a role model, especially for Muslim girls! At a time when girls in the rest of the world were not being educated, Hazrat Aisha was taught directly by the Prophet Muhammad n and she became so knowledgeable that she used to teach people, both men and women, and the Companions often came to seek her advice on difficult matters. She was very generous, and used to give everything she had in charity. Very often, she had no food as she gave the little food she had to others who were hungry.

Through Hazrat Aisha , we learn a lot about how the Prophet Muhammad n treated his family. He was always kind and loving to them. The Prophet Muhammad n and Hazrat Aisha even used to have camel races!

Hazrat Aisha passed away on 17th Ramadwaan, and now rests in Jannatul Baqi, in Madina.

• First Step: The Quran was sent down from Lawhul Mahfooz (The Preserved Tablet) to the lowest Jannah.

• Second Step: From the lowest Jannah, the Quran was sent in small portions to the Prophet Muhammad n . It started with the first 5 verses of Surah Al-’Alaq, which were sent on Laylatul Qadr. It took 23 years for the whole Quran to be sent down.

2. After the Hijra, the Prophet Muhammad n always wanted to return to Makkah to perform Umrah and Hajj, but was not able to do so as Makkah was under the rule of the non believers. Finally, on 17th Ramadwaan, 8 years after the Hijra, Allah allowed Muslims to enter Makkah. This is called Fath Makkah.

DAY 21 - QuranThe Quran is a Holy book that contains the words of Allah. It was revealed in Arabic, and we still read it in Arabic today.

The Quran is a guide for Muslims. It teaches many things, for example, about Allah, His Prophets, the day of Judgement, Paradise (Jannah) and Hell (Jahannam). It also teaches us the important rules we need to follow to be good Muslims, for example, praying Salaah and having good manners.

There are lots of rewards in reading the Quran, especially during the month of Ramadwaan. There is even more rewards in memorising the Quran. Someone who has memorised the whole Quran is called a Haafiz Quran.

DAY 23 - Surahs of Protection

Surah Al-Falaq (The Day Break) and Surah An-Nas (The Mankind) are the final Surahs of the Quran. We read them to seek protection with Allah from all evil.

Some people in Madina had bad intentions and wanted to harm the Prophet Muhammad n . They used black magic. When the Prophet Muhammad n started to feel unwell, these two Surahs were revealed as a cure. By the blessings of reading these Surahs, the evil effects were blocked.

The Prophet Muhammad n used to read Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blow over his hands, and pass his hands over his body.

It is important to learn these two Surahs and read them everyday, in the morning when we wake up, and at night before going to sleep. Insha Allah, this will always protect us and bring Barakah in our lives.

Listen to Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas and practise reading them.

DAY 24 - Last Jumu'ah of RamadwaanFriday (Jumu'ah in Arabic) is the best day of the week for Muslims. It is like the Eid of the week. There is a special Salaah called Jumu'ah that we pray instead of Zuhr. Today’s Jumu'ah day is even more special as it is the last Jumu'ah of Ramadwaan.

Sunnah acts on Jumu'ah day

Other Ibaadah on Jumu'ah day

Perform Ghusl (bath) Cut nails

Jumu'ah Salaah is different from Zuhr Salaah. The Imam first gives a talk in Arabic, called a Khutba. During the Khutba, it is important to sit quietly (like in Salaah) and listen to the Imam, even if you do not understand Arabic. After the Khutba, we pray 2 Rakaats in Jama’at. Remember, for Zuhr, it is 4 Rakaats.

Jumu'ah Salaah is not compulsory for women. Instead they can pray Zuhr Salaah at home.

Because of the coronavirus, we may not be able to go to the Masjid. In this case, we must stay at home and pray Zuhr Salaah instead of Jumu’ah Salaah. Allah will still reward us. We need to constantly pray to Allah to help us through these difficult times, to keep us and our families safe, and to allow us to return to our Masjid.

DAY 25 - Animals in the QuranAllah created everything in this universe. Animals are also one of Allah’s creatures. Just as human beings worship Allah, animals also worship Allah. Allah also created animals to help us. For example, animals provide us with food (meat), drink (milk) and a means of transport. There are many animals that are mentioned by name in the Quran. Allah granted the Prophets the power to do miracles. The Prophet Sulayman could understand the language of animals. Let’s look at some stories of Prophet Sulayman and his conversation with animals which are mentioned in the Quran.

1. Prophet Sulayman and the ant - Surah 27, Verses 18-19

2. Prophet Sulayman and the bird (Hud-Hud) - Surah 27, Verses 20-24

One day, Prophet Sulayman and his army were travelling through a valley where the ants lived. A queen ant heard them approaching and warned the others to go back to their houses so that they are not crushed. Prophet Sulayman heard the ant. He asked his army to stop, and allowed the ants to enter their houses safely.

One day, when the Prophet Sulayman was inspecting the birds, he found that one of the birds called Hud-Hud was not present. When Hud-Hud came back, it informed the Prophet Sulayman of what it had found. In a city called Saba, Hud-Hud found that its Queen, Queen Bilqees, and her people were worshipping the sun instead of Allah. On hearing this news, Prophet Sulayman invited the Queen to Islam and Queen Bilqees finally accepted Islam.

In Islam, animals have rights too. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad n taught us to be kind to animals. We will be rewarded by Allah for every act of kindness to animals. This is especially important at the time of Eid-Ul-Adha, when we have to treat the animal we will sacrifice very gently, feed it, and give it water to drink. We should not tease or scare it.

DAY 27 - Stories in the QuranThe Quran is full of stories about the lives of the Prophets and other pious people who lived a very long time ago. These are true stories that Allah has revealed to guide us.

A very long time ago, there was a good and pious man who lived in a city called Nineveh in Iraq. He was not an ordinary man. He was a Prophet of Allah and his name was Hazrat Yunus p. During that time, the people living in Nineveh had forgotten about Allah, they were doing many bad deeds and were worshipping idols. Allah sent the Prophet Yunus p to guide these people and teach them about Allah.

For a long time, Prophet Yunus p tried his best to guide the people of Nineveh but he had a very hard time and they did not listen to him. Finally, Prophet Yunus p decided to leave Nineveh. He boarded a boat to go to a far away place.

Soon after the boat set sail, the skies grew dark and there was a storm. This was because of Allah’s anger. The people of Nineveh got scared and remembered Prophet Yunus' p teachings. They felt sad for not listening to him and asked Allah for His forgiveness.

Today, let’s look at the story of Prophet Yunus p.

94

At the same time, Prophet Yunus' p ship was also in trouble - it was starting to sink. To save the ship, the people on the boat believed a sacrifice had to be made. Someone had to be thrown out of the boat. The people on the boat drew lots and it happened to be Prophet Yunus p. The people on the boat could not believe it. How is it that such a pious and good man had to be thrown at sea? The lots were drawn a second and third time and each time it was Prophet Yunus p.

But Prophet Yunus p understood that this was Allah’s will and he jumped into the sea. After some time, he found himself alive in a very dark place. In fact, Prophet Yunus p was in the belly of a whale.

In this time of difficulty and hardship, Prophet Yunus p remembered Allah. Deep inside the belly of the whale, Prophet Yunus p went into Sajdah. Imagine Prophet Yunus p making Sajdah for Allah in a place where no one else had done Sajdah before - inside the belly of a whale! SubhanAllah!

Prophet Yunus p made the following Duah: (Surah 21, Verse 87)

لمين انت سبحنك اني كنت من الظ ل اله الLaa- ilaaha illa anta subhaanaka inni kuntu minadh-dhalimeen

There is none worthy of worship but You, Glory is to You. Undoubtedly, I did an improper act.

95

Prophet Yunus p prayed and prayed. He knew that Allah will help him. After some time, Prophet Yunus' p Duahs were answered. Allah ordered the whale to leave Prophet Yunus p on land. The whale then swam close to the shore and left Prophet Yunus p on the shore. Allah then ordered a tree to grow to provide Prophet Yunus p with shade and food. After some time, Prophet Yunus p went back to Nineveh, where his people were waiting for him. They accepted Islam and all thanked Allah for His blessings.

There are many lessons that we learn from the true story of the Prophet Yunus p:

1. Allah sends difficulties as tests.2. We should always be patient during difficult times. 3. Remember Allah and make Duah to Allah during difficult times.4. Allah will always protect us and help us when we make sincere Duahs.

Did you know?

Allah sent many Prophets to this world, and we believe it is around 124,000. The Quran mentions the name of 25 Prophets. The Prophet Muhammad n is the final and most superior of all Prophets. His title is Khataman-Nabiyyin (meaning the Seal of the Prophets).

DAY 28 - Sabr and Shukr Sabr in Islam means patience. Islam teaches us to be patient. We need to be patient when we want or need something or when we are in difficult times. Instead of complaining and feeling sad, we remember Allah and make Duah. Allah likes those who are patient and rewards us when we are patient. Our Prophet Muhammad n was a very patient person and he n got success from Allah.

Allah says in the Quran (Surah 2, verse 153):

Together with Sabr, we should also have Shukr. Shukr means thankfulness or gratitude. We are thankful to Allah for all the things we have. Allah has given us a house, parents, friends, food and drink and most important of all, Allah has made us Muslims. Remember that when we are thankful, Allah gives us more. We thank Allah by saying: “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is for Allah)

Allah says in the Quran (Surah 14, Verse 7)

برين إن هللا مع الصInnallaha ma’a swabireen

Surely Allah is with those who have patience.

كم لئن شكرتم ألزيدنLa-in shakartoum la-azeedannakoum

If you will be grateful, then I shall give you more.

99

Our lives have changed a lot because of the coronavirus, which makes people very ill. Such a tiny creature sent by Allah has scared the whole world! We cannot go out, meet our family and friends or go to the Masjid and school. As we have learnt from the stories of the Prophets, Allah sends tests to those He loves, to see whether we can be patient and increase our Ibaadah for Him. Allah also sends hardships to us when we do not behave as good Muslims and make Him unhappy.

During difficult times, we have learnt that we should:

1. Be patient2. Make sincere Duah to Allah for ourselves, our families, and the whole world3. Increase our Salaah and Ibaadah4. Ask for forgiveness from Allah5. Thank Allah for everything that we have, for example food and safety

Insha Allah, very soon, Allah will grant us success over our difficulties!

Tonight is the last odd night - remember to make Ibaadah and ask Duahs!

Did you know?

We should be thankful to other people like our parents, family, teachers and friends who help us or give us something. When we thank our Muslim brothers and sisters, instead of saying ‘Thank you’, it is good to say JazakAllah which means ‘May Allah reward you’. This means that we are also making Duah for the person which is the best gift that we can give to that person.

Our family who are no longer in this world can also benefit from our Ibaadah when we ask Allah to send rewards to them too.

Before Ramadwaan ends, let’s ask Allah to send the rewards of our Quran recitation and other Ibaadah those who are no longer in this world.
