MESSAGE MESSAGE

Our flagship programme, the MusicChildren@Shamshuipo for children between 6 to 12 continues to prosper; we are giving classes to a 100-member orchestra, a 45-member choir, a string ensemble and a percussion group. To enhance the effectiveness of our teaching by extending it to even younger children, we have created a new course – the MusicCradle@Shamshuipo for children aged 2 to 6 who and their accompanying parents/guardians, making it a prequel to the MusicChildren@Shamshuipo.

To bridge out beyond geographical boundaries and to save the inconvenience of commuting to our centre, we have launched an out-reach Chinese Percussion programme to students at Pak Tin Catholic Primary School in Sham Shui Po, the first of its kind which can set the tone for future projects in Shamshuipo district and beyond.

During the year, we continue our engagement with the community through giving 20 public performances : the highlight of which are the 2nd "Music For Everyone" Concert, and the unforgettable Music Children Annual Concert.

I would like to express my gratefulness to our donors and friends for their kindness and generosity. Without them, we would not have had such a great year. My special thank-you must go to the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung, GBS, JP, who has twice officiated at our functions. I look forward to their continuous support to help us bring the joy of music to many more underprivileged children in Hong Kong .

Monique PongFounder

As the Music Children Foundation Limited goes into its third year, it gives me great pleasure to highlight some major developments in the past year.

First on the list is a milestone – our move in June to the new centre, a 2,500-sq. ft facility, at Fu Cheong Estate at Shamshuipo, resulting from our partnership with LINK REIT. It provides an excellent space for teaching and office administration. At the same time, we are grateful to the Society for Community Organization(SoCO) for allowing us to use their premises before the move.

Much gratitude to our friends in the media industry, who had helped introducing us to the general public in Hong Kong. Instruments and gifts are donated to us from very generous donors and we deeply appreciated it.

All the above support to MCF are very valuable to us and they strengthen our faith in our work.

In the coming 2016, we will continue to do our best in serve our children and parents with music. Moreover, we would like to extend our mission beyond Sham Shui Po, to those underprivileged families in need of musical training in different area of Hong Kong.

Please continue to support MCF!

Annike PongCo-Founder & Program Director

INTRODUCTION OUR TEAM

Music Children Foundation Limited (“MCF”) was established in August 2013 and registered under Section 88 of Inland Revenue Ordinance of Hong Kong since April 2014. We are a small organization but with a “big” heart desiring to bring music learning opportunities to underprivileged families.

Our project was inspired by Venezuela’s music programme “El Sistema”, which believed that “Music has to be recognized as an agent of social development, in the highest sense because it transmits the highest values

- solidarity, harmony, mutual compassion. And it has the ability to unite an entire community and to express sublime feelings”.

MCF provides an early music education, free of charge, to underprivileged children aged from 2 to 12 in the Sham Shui Po area, one of the poorest areas in Hong Kong. In 2014-2015, MCF has reached out to 214 children, as increased from 86 children in 2013-2014.

In addition to the programmes established since the founding of MCF, namely Music Children @ShamShuiPo and Music for Everyone Concert, new programmes and activities have been introduced in 2014-15. They include Music Cradle @ShamShui Po, which aims to provide music training to younger children aged 2 to 6; Drum Fun!, which offers Chinese drum band training to Pak Tin Catholic Primary School students and also features performances and workshops at different LINK REIT sites. We have also endeavoured to cultivate better parent-child relationship by organising more parents’ workshops and talks in the past year.

WORDS FROM STUDENTS WORDS FROM PARENTS

"The 6th of September, 2015 was my younger son’s birthday. Although there was no cake, no gifts, and no celebration, he was given the opportunity to perform on stage at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts as part of the Choir and the Orchestra. This event made the most unforgettable and memorable birthday for my son. Performing on the stage, he found his confidence and his voice. I never thought that he could find such a sense of happiness and bliss through music. I never thought that my typical mischievous son could transform and grow so much. Before joining Music Children Foundation Limited, I never thought that he would have the chance to perform on a real stage. Day by day, he faces a lot of pressures from daily life, yet at MCF, he is able to let go of his pressures and insecurities, and truly be himself. I am immensely grateful to Ms. Monique Pong for giving the children the opportunity to learn and grow under the power of music. I am also grateful to every member of Music Children Foundation Limited, for all the support that you’ve given to my son. Thank you for giving him happiness, and changing our lives into something meaningful and beautiful."

PARENT OF SIU ZI HIN

“I am very touched, and I am very happy. Music Children Foundation Limited has given my children an opportunity to perform on a real stage, an opportunity of which I never thought they would have.”

PARENT OF LEE TUNG YAT AND LEE SHING HO

“Never in my life that I would have a thought to visit the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. This year, my son performed on a real stage at the HKAPA. Words cannot describe how I feel. I am very thankful to Ms. Pong, and all the teachers and volunteers for this unforgettable experience. Thank you!”

PARENT OF POON TSZ HONG

"Music Children Foundation Limited - a name that was once unfamiliar to me but has now became my source of happiness and sense of love. MCF has also brought indescribable happiness and hope to our family. A life once filled with pressure from our daily lives and complaints of our difficult living conditions has transformed when my daughter joined MCF. Music enters our lives, and has changed our hearts. MCF shines our heart like warm sun rays of the first light of spring, giving us warmth and hope. MCF is also like a doctor, not only curing every child’s heart, but restoring faith within grassroots families. I would like to thank the person who founded MCF, Ms. Pong, for bringing music to every child, for achieving the extraordinary within the ordinary. Ms. Pong, thank you! I hope MCF continues to bring love and hope to everyone."

PARENT OF WANG MAN FEI

“After this year’s annual concert, I feel very happy and proud of myself. When I heard all the applause from the audience, I felt all my hard work and practice has finally paid off.”

“This year’s annual concert was a very happy experience. I was glad to be able to participate and perform with all the other members of the instrumental class. Before the concert, we had to go to many classes and rehearsals. Even though the practices were difficult, everything was worth it once I walked onto that stage. I was overwhelmed with happiness whilst all my worries and difficulties disappeared.”

LEE SUET TING 李雪庭Instrumental Class

LEE TUNG YAT 李東逸Instrumental Class “Ms. Pong, thank you so much for giving us a

chance to be able to learn a music instrument! ”

“I feel very happy here at MCF and I hope that I can continue to enjoy this great experience with my friends and fellow peers, growing up together, and playing together. I feel so lucky to meet TX, BB and Leung Chi Ho in my life. Although I know that TX and BB have left, I will keep up my hard work and to study well at school. I will strive to get good academic results and to continue learning music happily.”

“Ever since I joined the Flute class here at MCF, I’ve become so much happier. I feel so lucky to be able to take part in the Grade 5 Musical Theory class as it greatly improved my knowledge on and understanding of music rhythm and tempo.”

WORDS FROM VOLUNTEERS WORDS FROM TUTORS

“This is my first time attending a MCF performance. I’ve watched the students during their rehearsals and I could see that everyone was very focused during the performance. I am glad to see that they were very excited, motivated, and happy. This encouraged me to join the volunteer team here at MCF.”

RUBY YAU

As a volunteer at MCF, I can say I feel very privileged. Not only is the experience that I have had with the children, a worthwhile and eye-opening experience, I start to understand the severity of the poverty in Hong Kong and the less privileged situation on which the children lives on. This makes this volunteering experience very valuable and important. Through volunteering at MCF, I feel that I have truly contributed to helping these children to enjoy and appreciate music and hope that I and the other people volunteering here can contribute to make an impact on our local community.”

SQ

“Thank you MCF for the opportunity to start the string ensemble this summer. I am so fortunate to be able to come to work at MCF and get to know all of these incredibly talented children. I will miss MCF and the children very much. I hope you will be able to see how much the children have progressed since the end of June. I would never have thought they could play Canon in D three months ago. I am extremely proud of them.”

BRANDON LIN

“I don’t even know where to start. In less than a year, MCF has become my second home. I would always look forward to helping out, and I would never be tired or bored of it, even if I went 3-4 times every week. I’ve met many people and made many friends at MCF, and will truly miss everyone there. When I first helped out at MCF for the first time, I never would have thought I would get so involved, nor did I think that I would have such a close relationship with the kid.”

TX HO

“I have known Mrs.Wu for almost 9 years and am impressed with her rich imagination and creativity. She found MCF to develop children's horizons and thinking. I actually came from a grassroots background. My father is a taxi driver and my mother is a cleaner. Parents and relatives opposed to the idea for me to learn the violin because of the expensive tuition which was considered somewhat impractical. My mother, on the other hand, insisted to work 3 jobs a day, from dawn to dusk, as a cleaner to earn and support me and my sister to learn violin and piano. Through music, I learnt to understand my characteristic and the essential elements of wellbeing while walking along the path : to work hard, to be persistent, to stay focus, to be patience and be perseverant. I consider myself as an ordinary person but manage to overcome a lot of difficulties through inspiration from these elements. I hope, through learning violin, MCF children will grow up with this positive message - "introduce music to underprivileged children at an early age to cultivate their core values towards building a harmonious society.” – which is also the vision of MCF & mine.”

LEUNG CHI HO - VIOLIN TUTOR

“It costs a lot to learn music.” No one objected to this statement, and everyone believed to trust in this faith until my life gets into Music Children Foundation Limited by Mrs Wu and Miss Pong. No matter in any significant, we could not only balance it with values. Learning is by passion, effort and the most important, is by heart. This feeling is what I could receive when I work along with my colleagues and my students during the past years. This ambiance will be genuine pass along in the future. What I could express is people from any districts, area or stratum in Hong Kong, in the world, should not be limited by where they come from or how they come to the current situation. But we should concern who they are and who they will be. Music Children Foundation Limited (MCF) is not only mentally transforming, improving the students, but also modifying a positive atmosphere in the music industry.I am Jacky Leung, I trusted myself to believe what I felt with MCF, and this feeling is going to be affirmative in the future.

RUBYYAU

TXHO
