Dear KIDS Readers,

Welcome to the first issue of volume six of KIDS! Can you believe that we've been releasing this magazine for six years now? As

always, our staff is dedicated to providing you the best possible educational information to help you improve the lives of your children.

In this issue, we tackle the very important issue of social responsibility. For our children to develop into caring and compassionate

global citizens, it is essential to cultivate a sense of social responsibility and community service in each of them. This can be done

through a variety of activities, but more importantly, it can be demonstrated and modeled for them through our actions. If we expect

our children to grow up with compassion, we should, "Practice what we preach."

In this issue, we have a variety of fantastic articles on community service, both inside and outside of the classroom, and also highlight

what the EtonkidsCares Project has recently achieved at some Etonkids Campuses. Additionally, we share some advice from experts

regarding dementia and air pollution. Finally, we have dug through our archives to share one of our first storybooks, Baby Birds First

Flaps, again with you . As some of your children have recently entered kindergarten for the first time, this cute story of courage and

encouragement will inspire them to embrace their new experiences with a smile.

Sincerely,

The Staff of KIDS

Education Lexicon

Project-Based LearningDifferent from a traditional classroom where students are required to work on tasks alone, project-based learning allows students to apply what they’ve learned to collaborate with others to create a product. Well-designed projects will encourage students to achieve learning through real-world problems that impact people’s life beyond the school as well as cultivate decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Experiential LearningThe sister to child-centered, project-based, and inquiry-based learning, experiential learning focuses on hands-on approaches and experiences. In this type of learning, students will directly learn from experiencing things related to the subjects they are learning about or recreating scenarios through projects or case studies instead of receiving second-hand information from textbooks. For example, instead of learning about plant life from a book by sitting in the classroom, an experiential classroom would take the botany class into the garden to study local flora firsthand.

Flipped ClassroomThe flipped classroom takes the traditional model of classroom practices — in which the teacher presents content at school, and students master the material through assignments at home — and turns it on its head. In the flipped classroom, students are provided with course materials outside of class (in some cases, through pre-recorded lectures). During class, teachers facilitate activities and help students process and work with the content in a supported environment.

“If we give perfect freedom, we will harvest perfect discipline.”-— Maria Montessori

As Jamie, our KIDS magazine editor, was telling me

the theme of this magazine issue, I took time to think and

reflect on how caring for other people and giving back to

the community starts in preschool. I went through my

observation photos and videos of our campus school life

and tried to observe it from the point of view of a child. I

would like to share my observations of how thoughtfulness

and consideration are observed and put into practice by our

children at school.

We all want children to grow to respect themselves

and be respectful of other people and their own living

environment. This is the most important factor in our

aim as educators and parents for our children to become

useful members of their society. The child will only become

respectful if the adults around him/her model this respect

daily. Of course, life is imperfect, and we live in high pressure

work environment, which children observe at school. It is

also important for children to know that anyone can have

a bad day, and nobody is really perfect. Needless to say, it

is important to be consistent in our modeling while having

the communication lines open to explain to children that life

is not perfect, and we need to tackle problems to come out

winners.

Giving back to the community, caring for others, and

caring for one’s environment doesn't just happen. All of these

things have to be observed and learned from somewhere. So,

where does it start at preschool? As Montessori specialists,

we were trained to model respectful communication in the

classroom. Children often come to our class and have no

concept of making eye contact when being addressed by a

teacher. Giving back to community will not start without

learning the basic communications skills at home and at

school first.

The school management staff and teachers model

grace and courtesy our children should practice inside and

outside of the school environment. We have a tradition here

at Etonkids Palm Springs campus for half of the school staff

to come out every morning to greet children and parents.

Teachers talk with their students as children go through the

morning medical check with the nurses and as they walk

them into their classrooms. The other half of the class staff

greets children inside the classroom where they have their

breakfast and have time to practice their table manners.

Morning greetings set the tone for the whole day of work

for both children and adults at our kindergarten. Children

observe how friendly and respectful their parents and

teachers are when they greet each other in the morning. They

learn from their teachers to be more polite to their family

members as well as pick up the proper social scripts for small

talk, greetings, and goodbyes. Palm Springs students usually

know the names of all teachers on our campus because of

our meaningful morning greetings tradition.

This photo illustrates Matias reminding his student to

say goodbye to her family before walking upstairs to her

classroom. This way children get to hear a lot of everyday

English and practice repeating a large variety of the English

greetings.

Our children learn respect from the way their teachers

talk to them and instruct them throughout the day. A lead

teacher often video records the daily communication

exchanges between students and teachers and sends the

videos and photos to our parents, who enjoy receiving the

academic and practical life progress reports of their child’s

kindergarten life.

Lindsay

In this illustration from our daily class life, you can see

how relaxed and friendly the casual conversation between

Adiela and Lindsay is. Lindsay saw Adiela doing new work,

so she came up to ask what it was.

If there is one thing I learned during my 10 years of

working as an educator with adults and 8 years of working

with children, it is that timely communication and spending

time with the person you instruct is the most important

thing of all to achieve the academic goals planned for that

particular student.

Maria Montessori used to often write in her books that

observation perfects movement. This is a quote with deep

meaning. We must be good observers before we act, repeat

the another person’s presentation, or have a drive to initiate

the action in the first place. If we, as adults, are patient

observers, the children will observe with respect and repeat

the activity modeled to them with maximum precision. Then

they will proceed and show it to their classmates during

work/play and circle activities as well as present it to their

parents when they visit the class.

All the classroom work activities are driven by the

developmental needs and the interests of the children

observed during their free play/work period (or what some

teachers call free play Montessori time). Children come

into the classroom full of interesting and exciting things

to do. They work inspired by their inner desire to explore

their environment and consequently learn to manipulate it

without the teachers help. Engaged children enjoy what they

are doing and learn to give back by engaging their siblings,

friends, classmates, and even family members. Last term I

observed my student Hanna engaging her little brother in

her kindergarten routine practical life, language, and math

work. As a younger sibling, Andrew was great at observation

and absorbing his big sister’s instructions merely from

watching her work. Watching Hanna being a patient teacher

to her brother made other classmates more willing to show

work to younger classmates. Of course, Hanna was only

modeling the way her parents and teachers taught her at

home and in the classroom.

It surprises me when people say they don’t know how to

cook. From my experience, food preparation is an exciting

project every child in our class is willing to participate in.

In the next illustration, you can see our child care specialist

Ms. Dou bonding with Yoyo over cucumber peeling. I am

sure Yoyo goes home excited about preparing snack for the

whole class together with her teacher. Next time, she will

need less help and supervision, and she will most likely

peel and cut a cucumber for her parents at home as well.

What a great way to jumpstart giving back to her family

community! Maybe 20 or 30 years later, Yoyo will look at

this picture and tell her child that she learned to peel and

cut cucumbers in preschool with her teacher Ms. Dou.

It is not enough to just instruct children on academic

activities; I make it a point to comment on everything

teachers do for children during the day. Students should

be aware that everything we do is for their good, and they

are expected to care for other people around them in the

same way. Another important point of these comments is

so that children hear as much English as possible. Thinking

out loud and commenting on what we are doing is part

of our Montessori training. In China, our job is harder,

because very often younger students and newcomers don’t

understand much English. After we show children how to

climb or walk on the balance beam, we go and do it together

with them. This way they are more willing to do new things

and simply have more fun.

Teachers should be there for children for encouragement

and comfort. Just like parents, we are needed for reassurance

and safety to foster confidence and resilience through

modeling.

Parents are a child’s first teachers, so it is my goal as a

lead teacher to keep the communication lines open with our

class parents. I tell and show children how I send messages

and photos/videos of their work for the whole family to see

on WeChat. I ask all parents to include all caregivers into our

WeChat group, so that all family members can be on the

same page about their child’s academic progress. When

children forget what they did during the day, they know they

can sit down with their parents and look thorough the class

pictures on WeChat. I also send child development and

education articles as well as class music, songs, and theme

storybooks digitally to the group. Our class knows we are

they trust their family. IC1 at Palm Springs produces happy,

Working with Roundabout to Start Making a

Difference

We are pleased to announce that Etonkids is now

partnering with a social enterprise based in Beijing called

Roundabout. Two campuses in Beijing, Central Park Campus

and Guancheng Midtown Campus, have participated in

this new community service initiative. The EtonkidsCares

project has been well-received by students, parents, and

campus staff at these two campuses.

Roundabout is a social enterprise created in 2008

in Beijing by Leslie Simpson and led by volunteers. When

formed, Roundabout was the first of its kind with its central

charity store in mainland China. Thanks to the support from

donors, Roundabout has been connected with 48 charitable

organizations around Beijing and supports charities in

different areas across the country. Today, Roundabout acts

as a "hub," connecting the donors to the people in need.

Roundabout is now managed by Mary Kate Brown and

Becky Wang with two charity retail shops in Shunyi district.

The charity shops are open to whoever wants to help and

welcome all donations. Donations are either directly given

to people in need or sold in store to raise funds. All the

money raised and donations are used to pay the medical and

educational fees for children and the less fortunate. This

money pays for room and board for victims of environmental

disasters. Roundabout also helps the elderly, children in

orphanages, and the mentally or physically challenged.

If you also want to help, you can participate in this

community service by bringing your old belongings and

giving them a "second life" by donating them to Roundabout.

If you want to set up a Roundabout donation box at your

campus, or if you want to know more about EtonkidsCares

achieve that goal, we have incorporated character development

education activities in the EtonkidsCares Program. We have

started the Get Well Card Project at Etonkids campuses such

as Peking House Campus and Lido Campus. By using concise

and focused character development lessons, students were

first taught the importance of caring for others, especially

those that are sick. As we all know, when someone cares for

us when we are down, our spirits are often lifted. Following

this line of thinking, we have encouraged our students to

design their own get well cards for patients. While many of

them were too young to write a card, they were encouraged to

draw pictures and decorate them using their own creativity.

Then the teacher assisted them with signing their name.

These cards were then passed to Beijing United Hospital to

distributed and spread joy amongst the patients.

At Etonkids, instilling not only a love of learning, but a

love of caring is crucial to developing our students into global

citizens that will positively impact the world.

在中国的文化里,有句谚语是这么说的:“若欲快一时,打个盹;

There's a proverb in Chinese culture: "If you want

happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for

a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a

fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody."

Children are never too young to learn the value and delight

of helping others and giving back to their community.

Every culture has its proverbs that speak to the idea of

creating a sense of charity and community. In English, we

say, "Charity begins at home," and in Africa, we talk about

"Ubuntu – a deep sense of community and a common thread

of humanity that connects us all."

We know children learn by watching their parents. Take

talking, for instance. We talk to our children from the time

they're babies, and after a while, they start talking back.

We know that if they see us reading, chances are they will

learn to love reading too. We can also model compassion and

generosity to raise caring and compassionate global citizens.

If children see us donating our time, they will learn to do

the same. By volunteering or donating your time/money as

a family, parents will raise children who not only care for

others but feel a sense of responsibility for their fellow man,

their community, and those less fortunate than themselves.

As parents, we hope our children will grow to be

successful adults, but what exactly defines success?

Financial independence? Athletic ability? High grades at

school? Developing emotional intelligence during childhood

by being able to relate to others is arguably more important

than almost any other skill. Children who develop the traits

of empathy and compassion early on are more likely to have

happy, productive relationships in both their professional

and personal lives as adults.

The fact is that we can't just preach about being

charitable and compassionate – these are traits which only

carry any real meaning when we see them in action. So, what

can parents do to start instilling this sense of charity and

giving back to the community in their children?

1. Donate old clothes and household items.

Every couple of months, go through your closets and root

out clothes you haven't worn in a while. These clothes can

then be donated to the needy or a local charity organization

for distribution to those in need. Encourage your children

to do the same. Allow them to select which clothes or toys

they wish to donate. The value of this activity is diminished

if you go through their closets for them without including

them. For the biggest benefit, get your children involved

in the selection process. Take your children with you when

you drop the items off at the charity. I'm sure we all have a

few items in the back of our closet we've outgrown or are no

longer fashionable.

2. Help your neighbors.

Helping out those in our immediate communities builds

a sense of charity and giving back to the community because

we engage with those people on a regular basis. Helping the

elderly couple next door to walk their dog or carry heavy

shopping bags up the stairs can have an impact. Also,

keeping your community clean by picking up trash or just

stopping to have a short chat with a neighbor can make a

huge difference in the lives of those who live around us.

There may be people in your community who don't have

any family around for holidays and special celebrations –

consider opening your home to them during these times

of year when they might feel particularly lonely. Drawing

a picture or writing them a short note could make a huge

difference in their lives and help them feel a sense of

belonging to the community.

3. Give blood – parents not kids!

Take your children with you, so they see you as a model

for giving. Talk to them about why you choose to donate

blood and what you hope it will accomplish.

4. Make birthdays and holidays charitable.

Set up birthday parties as a time for giving to others.

At your child's first school-age birthday party, ask guests to

bring a book or toy (new or used) to be donated to a local

charity. Talk to your child about the items they have and

about children who have no books or toys. Explain that one

way to celebrate a birthday would be to give to those who

have less. Involve the birthday boy or girl in the decision of

whether to give the items to an orphanage, a needy school

in a remote village, a family you know to be in need, or

some other appropriate organization. When you deliver the

donations with your child, record it on camera and revisit

that movie (or those pictures) on future birthdays.

5. Don't forget our furry friends!

Buy dog or cat food and take it to the local animal rescue

shelter. Allow your children to spend some time with the

animals so that they can develop a connection with those

lives they've helped.

6. Food baskets – the gift of nutrition.

Build food baskets around the holidays and give them

to a needy family. Natural disasters like earthquakes and

flooding can leave families destitute and malnourished, and

food baskets could ease some of their hardships. Involve your

children is selecting canned goods, fruit, and other treats to

include in the basket. Decorate the gift package and deliver it

together as a family.

7. Pocket-Change for a difference.

Create a charity jar to be used by the family. If you're

anything like me, you end up with more than a handful of

change in your bag at the end of the week. If your children

get an allowance, this would be an excellent teaching

opportunity! Invite children to share some of their allowance

with others by donating a portion of it to the jar. As the jar

fills up, decide as a family where to contribute its contents.

You may choose to donate to charity, buy school supplies for

less fortunate families, or contribute to a rescue-services

charity. Read about various charities on the Internet and

share this information with your children to help them make

an informed decision.

By implementing some of these ideas or others like

them, you will be teaching your children that charity and a

sense of a global community are not reserved only for

emergencies. You will be helping them appreciate that

reaching out to others in need is a way of life, rather than a

moment in time when a disaster occurs. Being the role-model

and example to your child will far outweigh anything you

could say – actions will always speak louder than words.

Remember, while you are giving to others, you are giving

your children important messages about your beliefs

concerning the spirit of giving.

volunteering experiences?

In 2013, I attended a summer camp in Chifeng, Inner

they left a mark in my heart.

2. How does volunteer work benefit children?

What suggestions do you have for parents

regarding raising a socially responsible child?

Volunteering will unite people from diverse backgrounds

to work toward a common goal, and from this, children

can pick up some social skills (e.g., sharing, playing

together, etc.). Basically, I would advise parents to teach

their children from an early age and to always consider the

feelings of other people in anything they do. This means

doing to others what you would like them to do to you if you

were in their position. If every parent taught their children

this, then the world would be a better place.

1. What is one of your most memorable volunteering

experiences?

One time, I visited a school for the deaf with my college

classmate. What really surprised me was that they still manage

to have a positive attitude toward life despite the fact that they

can’t communicate with others in a normal way. That’s the

moment that I realized I should be grateful for life.

2. How does volunteer work benefit children? What

suggestions do you have for parents regarding

raising a socially responsible child?

Community service and volunteering offers an opportunity for

children to learn about loving others and how to give back to

the community. In addition, it’s a great way to help children to

develop a sense of responsibility.

I advise parents to: 1. Occasionally assign some community-

based activities for your children. 2. Encourage your children

not to leave loose ends behind. 3. Teach your children to accept

responsibility for their actions. 4. Help your children become

compassionate toward others.

Symptoms of Dementia

The word “dementia” describes a set of symptoms

characterized by memory loss and difficulties with thinking,

problem-solving, or language (illustrated in Figure 1). These

changes are often subtle to start with but may advance to

affect social function and daily life. A person with dementia

may also experience changes in his/her mood or behavior.

Figure 1. Symptoms of dementia

Is dementia the same as Alzheimer’s disease?

No. There are many diseases that result in dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Other types of dementia include vascular dementia, dementia

with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, etc. There are many

other diseases that can lead to dementia, such as neurosyphilis,

HIV infection, hypothyroidism, and deficiency in folate acid

and Vitamin B12.

Does forgetfulness mean dementia?

Not necessarily. Many people notice their thinking gets a

bit slower or their memory becomes a bit less reliable as they get

older. Becoming a bit more forgetful does not necessarily mean

that they have dementia. More often, forgetfulness can also be a

sign of stress, depression, or certain physical illnesses.

However, it is strongly recommended anyone with

concerns with noticeable memory decline, or with symptoms

listed in Figure 1, addresses their concerns with a memory

clinic specialist. A closer check-up may find out the reasons for

forgetfulness and offer recommendations for intervention.

Where should a person with noticeable memory decline

be referred?

Dementia is classified as a neuropsychiatric disorder which

could be coded in ICD-10 as a mental and behavioral disorder,

or as a neurological disease. Dementia is usually diagnosed by

a memory specialist doctor in the department of neurology,

psychiatry, or geriatrics. Memory clinics or memory centers are

the appropriate places for proper assessment and diagnosis.

Recently in Beijing, several community health centers set up

memory clinics to provide memory care for those living in the

community.

How is dementia diagnosed?

There is no single test for dementia. A diagnosis is based on a

combination of factors, including:

A written account: The doctor talks to a friend/family

member about how the patient's problems have developed and

how their daily life has been affected by the disease.

Interviewing the person with dementia: In addition to physical

and neurological examinations, the doctor usually talks to the

person suspected of dementia. This allows the doctor to witness

firsthand how memory, thinking, and language are affected, and

whether he/she is suffering from psychiatric symptoms such as

depression, anxiety, hallucination, or delusions.

Blood tests: Blood tests, such as liver and renal function,

thyroid function, serotonin levels, and vitamin B12 levels, are

used to exclude other possible causes of the person’s symptoms.

Neuropsychological tests: These pen-and-paper and

computerized tests of mental abilities are usually carried out

by trained staff. This is done to assess memory, thinking and

judgment abilities, language, orientation, and mood.

Brain scans: It helps to explore the severity of brain

shrinkage and vascular lesions. It can also exclude other causes of

dementia, such as tumors.

If a diagnosis cannot be reached, the memory center

specialist may recommend brain amyloid PET imaging, glucose

PET imaging, or CSF tests. The use of these examinations remains

a hot topic in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s disease.

Why should we strengthen Continuing Care

Programs?

The continuing care of dementia includes: 1) raising

awareness and understanding of the disease, 2) screening and

preventive intervention for high-risk populations, 3) diagnosis

and post-diagnostic support, including person-centered

psychosocial support for people, and 4) family member and

caregiver training.

Dementia awareness remains low in China. Nearly 80-90%

of people with dementia are not diagnosed in a timely manner.

Therefore, promoting public education, reducing stigma of this

disease, and screening for the high-risk population will help

more people get access to early diagnosis and intervention. Post-

diagnostic support and caregiver training will help to reduce the

caregiving burden and improve the patient's life.

What can I do for dementia care?

Nearly ten million people live with dementia in China.

Commitment from our society is the key to successful support

for people with dementia. As an individual, you could be a

conveyor and advocator by learning about the preliminary

symptoms of dementia and championing the early diagnosis /

treatment. As a community administrator, you could create a

dementia friendly community by installing a community center

with dementia relevant services, such as preventative services,

day care, and caregiver training. Minor commitment from each

individual will eventually make a giant step toward quality care

for people with dementia.

Dear Etonkids Peking House Campus teachers and staff,

Please allow me to take this opportunity to thank Nicole,

a lead teacher at your campus. My daughter Antai joined the

Etonkids family in April 2017. I had previously researched

a lot of famous schools in Beijing before choosing Etonkids.

Our story with Etonkids started during the 2016 Christmas

event. I still remember how patient Nicole was when she

helped Antai thread beads. She also explained to me how this

game could help children practice their fine motor skills. It

was Nicole’s professionalism and patience that cemented my

decision to send Antai to Etonkids.

Most children experience separation anxiety when they

first start school. Nicole alleviated my worries by sending

pictures and videos of Antai’s experiences during the first

week of school. She also made sure that Antai felt welcomed

by the older students in the class. Antai was not fully potty

trained prior to starting kindergarten. She would wet her

pants and then ask for permission to go to the bathroom. The

teachers in the class swiftly corrected this issue, instructing

Antai that she did not need permission to go to the bathroom.

When she felt the need, she could go by herself. That was

when Antai started to be more independent in taking care

of herself. She looked forward to attending school, all

thanks to the teachers’ love and care. Not only has Antai

made some good friends at Etonkids but the school has also

catered to her unique interests.

Great teachers are flexible and can conduct lessons

based on students’ interests. Nicole is one of the best

teachers I have ever met. One day, Antai came home with

a bottle that had several snails in it. After speaking to

Nicole, I discovered the adorable story behind the ‘snail

bottle.’ Apparently, after it had rained outside, Nicole had

found a snail and introduced it to the class. This sparked

the children’s curiosity, and they all went looking for snails

on the playground. Afterward, they brought the snails back

to the classroom and studied them.

Nicole is also great when it comes to problem-solving.

As a first-time mom, I would often go to Nicole for parenting

problems. For example, when I asked Nicole about teaching

children to tidy up at home, she came up with a fantastic

solution. Singing a clean-up song while tidying up has

helped Antai maintain a tidy bedroom.

Whenever a child had a small incident at school, Nicole

would inform the parents prior to escorting the child to the

nurse. One time, a child got scraped, but nobody knew what

happened. Nicole waited for the parents after school, and we

found out the reasons together, thereby solving the issue. I

feel incredibly fortunate to have met such an awesome and

caring teacher.

Nicole does not only care about her students during

working hours. If needed, she can be contacted outside of

school. One time, while going through my phone, Antai

found Nicole’s WeChat and sent her a voice message. Nicole

replied immediately and told her that she could talk to her

after school whenever she wanted. Now I know why Antai is

always singing about how much she loves her teacher.

Great teachers do not only teach with words but are

also positive role models for the students. Nicole is a great

role model. Since joining Etonkids, Antai’s manners have

significantly improved. She now says “Thank you” and

48 September & October 2017

www.etonkids.com 49

“Sorry” all the time at home. This directly relates to what

she has observed first-hand in the classroom. Nicole always

braids Antai’s hair after naptime. Antai mimics this behavior

at home, braiding her doll's hair, “Just like teacher Nicole.”

My husband once mentioned to me that it must be hard

to be a kindergarten teacher as they need to have so many

talents. He thinks that the teachers in Antai’s class are the

best teachers he has ever met. Maybe every parent will think

the same about the teachers from their child’s class. For

me, however, Antai’s teachers are truly the best, especially

Nicole. I’m writing this letter to express my gratitude for

all of Nicole’s hardwork. Antai is very fortunate to have met

such an incredible teacher. Our whole family is grateful that

we have met such a great teacher that we can trust our child

with.

How Much Do You Know about Air Pollution?

50 September & October 2017

HOME & SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL

www.etonkids.com 51

We often hear about the dangerous physical health

effects of air pollution. The statistics are always shocking

no matter how many times I read them. What we don’t

usually hear or think about, however, are its mental effects.

Air pollution impacts our minds both psychologically and

physically. Adults and children are both at risk, but not

equally.

People living in Beijing are constantly reminded about

the air quality of their city. Most mornings when I look

outside my window, I am greeted by a cloud of gray. I hear

the low droning noise from the fans of my air purifiers. My

phone alerts me of the AQI (Air Quality Index) level as I’m

catching up on morning WeChat messages. When I glance

at the daily news headlines, chances are I will come across

an article about how the air is causing my body irreparable

harm or about a new pollution cleaning device that is going to

save me (The irony here isn’t lost). Beijing is ground zero for

the worldwide air pollution conversation. There are plenty

of places with equal-to-worse air, but few receive as much

attention.

Maybe mental fatigue is to blame, because despite these

constant air quality reminders, people in Beijing are rarely

prepared for the sudden air pollution for which the city is

famous. What’s worse, mentally we can’t help but move our

air quality goalposts. A few consecutive days of unhealthy

to very unhealthy air (AQI 150 – AQI 300) doesn’t shake

Beijingers very much, but as soon as we get into hazardous

air quality territory (AQI 300-500), mask inventories run

dry and panic sets in.

I’m more plugged into the air pollution conversation

than most. Besides being the co-founder of a pollution mask

company (AQblue), I’ve lived in Beijing for nearly eight years.

I’ve watched the skies turn grayer more frequently during

my time here. I know how powerless it can feel to have

your health and lifestyle impaired by smog. Ignoring the

problem is one way to cope, but it’s important to not become

complacent with our polluted surroundings, especially for

those of us raising families in these conditions.

Children are more vulnerable to air pollution than

adults. Their pollution exposure is higher relative to their

body weight. They also tend to be more active outside and

take in more breaths per minute. Unfortunately, in addition

to the physical hazards, air pollution has also been shown to

be harmful to a child’s mind during critical stages of learning

development.

A 2008 study conducted in Boston and approved by

the Harvard School of Public Health found that “long-term

concentration of black carbon particles from mobile sources

was associated with decreases in cognitive test scores in

children.” The median age of the children in this study was

nine, but it’s not only this age range who are at risk.

A 2009 study conducted in New York City, supported

by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences,

evaluated the relationship between exposure in pregnant

women to airborne pollution and child intelligence. The

study found that “high exposure during pregnancy is a risk

factor for developmental delay at age 3” and that “children in

the high-exposure group had full-scale and verbal IQ scores

that were more than 4 points lower than the low-exposure

group.” This connection wasn’t just studied in America.

In 2009, researchers studying the effects of traffic

pollution on school children in Quanzhou (Fujian province)

reported, “participants living in the polluted area showed

poor performance on all testing; differences in results for six

of nine tests achieved statistical significance.”

Traffic pollution was the common thread linking these

three studies to a decline in children’s cogitative abilities,

but traffic as a source of air pollution is often overlooked

in China. We mostly think of the air pollution problem as

something that invades our cities from factories and power

plants outside it. While this is true, I would argue that some

of the most dangerous and direct pollution we breathe comes

from the cars and vehicles around us.

Engine exhaust is comprised of a mixture of things you

really shouldn’t be inhaling, such as black carbon, oil, and

metals. Vehicles also contribute to a variety of unhealthy

gases in the air, but it’s the particles that can do the most

lasting damage by depositing physical pieces of pollution

into our brains (and hearts and lungs). Traffic in large cities

is an everyday occurrence and pedestrians are only meters

away from the source. The city wide AQI monitors that alert

us of rising air pollution levels aren’t necessarily giving us

the whole picture. A 2017 study by the University of Texas

using Google Map cars equipped with air monitoring sensors

found that air quality levels varied by as much as 6x higher

on busy intersections and from block to block. It is hard

to be sure that our local streets have the same pollution

concentrations as the area around the US embassy or other

nearby monitoring stations. Traffic exhaust can often be less

noticeable than other forms of pollution, so it’s important to

use your best judgement regarding when to wear your mask.

Studies show there is evidence that air pollution

negatively influences the cognitive abilities of children, but

it will take decades of research to get a full picture regarding

polluted air and mental health. We shouldn’t panic just yet,

but we should see this information as a warning and take the

necessary precautions. Fortunately, we have some ways to

limit our roadside air pollution exposure.

• Avoid going outside when the AQI levels are high (AQI

150+). This is extra important for sensitive groups such as

children, pregnant woman, and the elderly.

• If your commute takes you near busy roads and

intersections, you should wear a particle filtering mask even

if the city-wide AQI readings aren’t high.

• Make a habit of carrying a particle filtering mask with

you and know how to wear it. Air pollution spikes can occur

relatively quickly in some cities.

• If you enjoy spending time outdoors with your family,

try to choose locations away from busy roads. The highest

concentration of pollutants is within 100 meters of a road.

500 meters of distance between is the best option.

• Get a good air purifier for your home. If it can’t completely

cover your home, put your purifier in the area you spend the

most time, like your bedroom.

What Should I Do If My Children Are Highly Sensitive?

Answer: With a sharpened sense of awareness, these children are often gifted intellectually, creatively, and emotionally,

demonstrating genuine compassion at early ages. The downside is that these intensely perceptive kids can also get

overwhelmed easily by crowds, noises, new situations, sudden changes, and the emotional distress of others.

Acceptance: Embracing your children as highly sensitive children is step one. Many parents bring me highly sensitive

children to "change" them into less sensitive, but I cannot do that. You cannot do that either. Being able to see their

sensitivity as a gift and accept it as part of your shared journey - whether you are highly sensitive or not - this is the way to

think and approach the situation.

Partner with Children: Harsh discipline can elicit the exact behavior you are trying to avoid like emotional meltdowns

and outbursts of energy (e.g., temper tantrums, crying, yelling, etc.). Partnering with your children includes learning their

triggers and also giving them tools when they feel overwhelmed like breathing exercises.

Switching Gears: Distracting your children by guiding them to another activity is also a powerful tool. For children

who cry a lot, they can be taught to count to ten out loud when they feel tears coming. At age three or four, counting still

takes focus and concentration, so whatever was upsetting your children may feel like old news by the time they get to ten.

Again, ask your children exactly what made them unhappy to help them find a remedy. Always ask them, “What can you

do to make yourself feel better?” If your children are stumped for ideas, remind them of things that make them feel good,

like inviting friends over to play or looking at a favorite picture book. With a little practice, children will soon start coming

up with solutions without any prompting from an adult.

Gentle Discipline: Just because your children are highly sensitive doesn't mean they don't need structure and limits in

their life. Being able to give your children gentle structure and clear limits with respect goes a long way. For example, if

it’s Jenna's bedtime and she is resisting, you might say, "Sweetheart, I realize you want to play all night, but it's time for

bed. You need your rest, and we have agreed to an 8:00pm bedtime, and it’s 8:00pm. Please start getting ready for bed."

This is an example of gentle discipline versus spanking and yelling.

The Right Reactions: Avoid the urge to tell them to stop crying, which will probably trigger more tears. Hypersensitive

preschoolers are very good at reading their parents’ emotions. If you get tense, it tells your children that whatever is

upsetting them is something to get worked up about. This models the very behavior you are trying to change. One way

to help children get control of their emotions is by playfully telling them, “Freeze!” Freezing helps them stop and collect

themselves. Then suggest that they take a deep breath and blow it out through their mouth the way a dragon would.

Some children are naturally on the sensitive end of the spectrum: prone to waterworks when the world doesn’t conform

exactly to their expectation. However, there’s a bright side. Highly sensitive children tend to be more compassionate,

gentle, and creative. They just need a little guidance from you to help manage their emotions. It is especially helpful

if highly sensitive children are born to a well-adjusted, happy, and healthy sensitive adult that can steer them in the

right emotional direction. Of course, that can be true of any children with good role models, but sensitive children need

especially good role models because they are learning how to use their incredible gift in a world that sometimes doesn't

value its inherent worth.

The Science Behind It:When you add the worms soaked in baking soda, the acetic

acid in the vinegar reacts with the bicarbonate of the

baking soda. When an acid and base react, carbon dioxide

gas bubbles form. These gas bubbles form on the gummy

worm, and as the gas bubbles rise to the surface, they pull

the gummy worm up with them, making them wriggle and

dance. As the gas bubbles burst, the worm falls back down

until enough bubbles form to pull it back up. The bubbles

will continue to form until all the baking soda on the worm

is used up.

Directions:1. First, cut the gummy worms in quarters. If you can’t

find a children’s knife, please help your children do the

cutting. Either way, you should be present during the

cutting process. Note: It easier to cut with a wet knife or

one dusted with baking soda to prevent the worm from

sticking to the knife.

2. Next, measure out three tablespoons of baking soda and

stir them into a glass filled with one cup of warm water.

Place the worms in the baking soda-water mix.

3. Then wait 15 minutes for the worms to soak in the baking

soda mixture.

4. After that, fill the second glass with vinegar.

5. Lastly, place the worms in the vinegar. As soon as the

worms in the first cup are ready, fish them out with a

fork. Put just a couple worms (we recommend four

worms) in the vinegar. They should instantly start

forming bubbles. After a few seconds, the worms should

be covered in enough bubbles that they start rising from

the bottom, writhing their way to the surface.

The Science Behind It:When you submerge an egg in vinegar, the shell dissolves.

Vinegar contains acetic acid, which breaks apart the solid

calcium carbonate crystals that make up the eggshell into

their calcium and carbonate parts. The calcium ions float

free (calcium ions are atoms that are missing electrons),

while the carbonate makes carbon dioxide—the bubbles

that you see.

Directions:1. Place your egg in the container.

2. Add enough vinegar to cover the egg. Notice that bubbles

form on the egg. Cover the container, put it in the

refrigerator, and let the egg sit in the vinegar for 24 hours.

3. Take out the container and check. The shell should have

been dissolved by then. If there are still some remaining

shells, scoop the egg out and carefully dump out the

vinegar. Put the egg back in the container and cover it with

fresh vinegar. Leave the egg in the refrigerator for another

24 hours.

4. Scoop the egg out again and rinse it carefully.

5. When you’re done, you’ll have an egg without a shell. It

looks like an egg, but it’s translucent—and the membrane

flexes when you squeeze it. Very cool!

6. To assure that you have one unbroken naked egg in the

end, please add one or two more eggs in the container and

handle them carefully.

responds to the reader’s voice to help move the story along. While you can progress by tapping on the screen, the app is built around using voice recognition technology. The story is simple and short, but sensitive children might find the nighttime aspects, paired with a set of glowing eyes peering out, a bit scary.

What is Empathy? Empathy is the ability to put ourselves in another’s place with compassion and understanding. It is

being able to understand and imaginatively enter into another person’s feelings. With empathy, we
