This project deals with Management information system (MIS) used in the different sectors of Mozilla Corporation. Management information system (MIS) of Mozilla provides information to support management activities. Key research issues related to MIS through the products and services of Mozilla are identified in this project. MIS problems faced by the several parts of the services and by information providers are then described. Finally, research opportunities in broad areas-information systems analysisand design for small firms, design and development of MIS components, and markets for information products and services-are discussed.

Day by day Internet is becoming one of the most obligatory parts in our daily life. At the commencement this internet was very straightforward. It was a unrestricted resource premeditated for modernization or opportunity. It was a position for construction of one’s dreams and imaginations.

But in those premature epochs like every eco structure, the web considered necessary nurturing and development. As is groomed, users faced new-fangled challenges; pop ups, viruses, a lot of choices. The web was free of incriminate but sluggish and convoluted. Users began to qualm about the entire web practice!

Company Review

The Mozilla Corporation (abbreviated MoCo) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation that coordinates and integrates the development of Internet-related applications.

History

The Mozilla Corporation was established on August 3, 2005 to handle the revenue-related operations of the Mozilla Foundation. As a non-profit, the Mozilla Foundation is limited in terms of the types and amounts of revenue. The Mozilla Corporation, as a taxable organization (essentially, a commercial operation), does not have to comply with such strict rules. Upon its creation, theMozilla Corporation took over several areas from the Mozilla Foundation, including coordination and integration of the development of Firefox and Thunderbird (by the global free software community) and the management of relationships with businesses.

With the creation of the Mozilla Corporation, the rest of the Mozilla Foundation narrowed its focus to concentrate on the Mozilla project's governance and policy issues. In November 2005,with the release of Mozilla Firefox 1.5, the Mozilla Corporation's website at mozilla.com was unveiled as the new homeof the Firefox and Thunderbird products online.

Firefox Browser

Firefox is a free and open-source web browser developed for Windows, OS X, and Linux, with a mobile version for Android, by the Mozilla.

Firefox uses the Gecko layout engine to render web pages, which implements current and anticipated web standards. According to Mozilla, Firefox counts over 450 million users around the world. The browser has had particular success in Indonesia, Iran, Germany, and Poland, where it is the most popular browser with 55%of the market share, respectively. Firefox browser include tabbedbrowsing, spell checking, incremental find, live bookmarking, Smart Bookmarks, a download manager, private browsing, location-aware browsing (also known as "geolocation") based on a Google service and an integrated search system that uses Google by default in most localizations. Functions can be added through extensions, created by third-party developers of which there is awide selection, a feature that has attracted many of Firefox's users. So the main features of Firefox are

Firefox implements many web standards, including HTML4, XML, XHTML, MathML, SVG 1.1, CSS (with extensions), ECMAScript, DOM, XSLT, XPath, and APNG images with alpha transparency. Firefox also implements standards proposals created by the WHATWG such asclient-side storage and canvas element. Firefox also implements aproprietary protocol from Google called "Safe Browsing", used to exchange data related with phishing and malware protection. Firefox uses a sandbox security model and limits scripts from accessing data from other web sites based on the same-origin policy. It uses SSL/TLS to protect communications with web servers using strong cryptography when using the HTTPS protocol.

It also provides support for web applications to use smartcards for authentication purposes. When Firefox is upgraded to new version an information bar will appear asking users whether they would like to send performance statistics (also known as “telemetry”) to Mozilla.

According to Mozilla's privacy policy, these statistics are stored only in aggregate format, and the only personally identifiable information transmitted is the user's IP address. Firefox is a widely localized web browser. Firefox for desktop isavailable and supported for Windows, OS X and Linux. Firefox for mobile is available for iOS & Android. In September 2013, a "Metro" app version of Firefox for Windows 8, optimized for touchscreen. Mozilla provides development builds of Firefox in the following channels: "Beta", "Aurora", and "Nightly". Firefox ESR is a version of Firefox for organizations and other adopters who need extended support for mass deployments, with each ESR release being supported for approximately one year. Firefox for mobile is a web browser for smaller non-PC devices, mobile phonesand PDAs. The user interface is completely redesigned and optimized for small screens, the controls are hidden away so thatonly the web content is shown on screen, and it uses touchscreen interaction methods. It includes the awesome bar, tabbed browsing, Add-on support, password manager, location-aware browsing, and the ability to synchronize with the user's computerFirefox browser using Firefox Sync. Firefox source code is free software with most of it being released under the Mozilla Public License. This license permits anyone to view, modify, and/or redistribute the source code, and several publicly released applications have been built on it. The name "Mozilla Firefox" isa registered trademark; along with the official Firefox logo, it may only be used under certain terms and conditions. Mozilla has placed the Firefox logo files under open-source licenses.

FIREFOX OS

Firefox OS is a linux kernel based open-source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers and is set to be used on smart TVs. It is being developed by Mozilla, the non-profit organization best known for the Firefox web browser.

Firefox OS is designed to provide a "complete" community-based alternative system for mobile devices, using open standards and approaches such as HTML5 applications, JavaScript, a robust privilege model, open web APIs to communicate directly with cellphone hardware, and application marketplace. As such, it competes with proprietary systems such as Apple's iOS, Google's

Android, Microsoft's Windows Phone and Jolla's Sailfish OS as well as other open source systems such as Ubuntu Touch.

Firefox OS was publicly demonstrated in February 2012, on Android-compatible smartphones, and again in 2013 running on Raspberry Pi. In January 2013, at CES 2013, ZTE confirmed they would be shipping a smartphone with Firefox OS, and on July 2, 2013, Telefónica launched the first commercial Firefox OS based phone, ZTE Open, in Spain which was quickly followed by GeeksPhone's Peak+.

Project inception and roll-out

On July 25, 2011, Dr. Andreas Gal, Director of Research at Mozilla Corporation, announced the "Boot to Gecko" Project (B2G) on the mozilla.dev.platform mailing list. The project proposal was to "pursue the goal of building a complete, standalone operating system for the open web" in order to "find the gaps that keep web developers from being able to build apps that are –in every way – the equals of native apps built for the iPhone [iOS], Android, and [Windows Phone 7]." The announcement identified these work areas: new web APIs to expose device and OScapabilities such as telephone and camera, a privilege model to safely expose these to web pages, applications to prove these capabilities, and low-level code to boot on an Android-compatibledevice.

This led to much blog coverage. According to Ars Technica, "Mozilla says that B2G is motivated by a desire to demonstrate that the standards-based open Web has the potential to be a competitive alternative to the existing single-vendor applicationdevelopment stacks offered by the dominant mobile operating systems."

In 2012, Dr. Gal expanded on Mozilla's aims. He characterized thecurrent set of mobile OS systems as "walled gardens" and presented Firefox OS as more accessible: "We use completely open standards and there’s no proprietary software or technology involved." Gal also said that because the software stack is entirely HTML5, there are already a large number of established developers. This assumption is employed in Mozilla's Web API. These are intended W3C standards that attempt to bridge the capability gap that currently exists between native frameworks and web applications. The goal of these efforts is to enable developers to build applications using Web API which would then run in any standards compliant browser without the need to rewrite their application for each platform.

Development history

In July 2012, Boot to Gecko was rebranded as 'Firefox OS', after Mozilla's well-known desktop browser, Firefox, and screenshots began appearing in August 2012.

In September 2012, analysts Strategy Analysts forecast that Firefox OS would account for 1% of the global smart phone market in 2013 – its first year of commercial availability.

In February 2013, Mozilla announced plans for global commercial roll-out of Firefox OS. Mozilla announced at a press conference before the start of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that the first wave of Firefox OS devices will be available to consumers in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia,Spain and Venezuela. Mozilla has also announced that LG Electronics, ZTE, Huawei and TCL Corporation have committed to making Firefox OS devices.

In December 2013, new features were added with the 1.2 release, including conference calling, silent SMS authentication for

mobile billing, improved push notifications, and three state setting for Do Not Track.

Async Pan and Zoom (APZ), included in version 1.3, should improveuser interface responsiveness.

"The major work will be on the optimization of Firefox OS runningon a 128MB platform" in version 1.3T.

Demonstrations

At Mobile World Congress 2012, Mozilla and Telefónica announced that the Spanish telecommunications provider intended to deliver "open Web devices" in 2012 based on HTML5 and these APIs. Mozillaalso announced support for the project from Adobe and Qualcomm, and that Deutsche Telekom’s Innovation Labs will join the project. Mozilla demonstrated a "sneak preview" of the software and apps running on Samsung Galaxy S II phones (replacing their usual Android operating system). In August 2012, a Nokia employeedemonstrated the OS running on a Raspberry Pi.

Firefox OS is compatible with a number of devices, including Otoro, PandaBoard, Emulator (ARM and x86), Desktop, Nexus S, Nexus S 4G, Samsung Galaxy S II, and Galaxy Nexus.

In December 2012, Mozilla rolled out another update and released Firefox OS Simulator 1.0, which can be downloaded as an add-on for Firefox. The latest version of Firefox OS Simulator, version 4.0, was released on July 3, 2013 and announced on July 11, 2013.

Core technologies

The initial development work involves three major software layers:

Gonk – platform denomination for a combination of the Linux kernel and the HAL from Android

Gonk

Gonk consists of a Linux kernel and user-space hardware abstraction layer (HAL). The kernel and several user-space libraries are common open-source projects: Linux, libusb, BlueZ, etc. Some other parts of the HAL are shared with the Android project: GPS, camera, among others. Gonk is basically an extremely simple Linux distribution and is therefore from Gecko'sperspective, simply a porting target of Gecko; there is a port ofGecko to Gonk, just like there is a port of Gecko to OS X, and a port of Gecko to Android. However, since the development team have full control over Gonk, the developers can fully expose all the features and interfaces required for comprehensive mobile platforms such as Gecko, but which aren't currently possible to access on other mobile OSes. For example, using Gonk, Gecko can obtain direct access to the full telephony stack and display framebuffer, but doesn't have this access on any other OS.

Gecko

Gecko is the web browser engine of Firefox OS. Gecko implements open standards for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Gecko includes a networking stack, graphics stack, layout engine, virtual machine (for JavaScript), and porting layers.

XUL Runner

XULRunner is the run-time system for anything written in XUL, especially any Firefox add-ons.

Gaia

Gaia is the user interface of Firefox OS and controls everything drawn to screen. Gaia includes by default implementations of a lock screen, home screen, telephone dialer and contacts application, text-messaging application, camera application and agallery support, plus the classic phone apps: mail, calendar, calculator and marketplace. Gaia is written entirely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It interfaces with the operating system through Open Web APIs, which are implemented by Gecko. Because ituses only standard web APIs, it can work on other OSes and other web-browsers.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Thunderbird is an email application. Mozilla announced the company was dropping the priority of Thunderbird development because the continuous effort to extend Thunderbird's feature setwas mostly fruitless. The new development model is based on Mozilla offering only "Extended Support Releases", which deliver security and maintenance updates, while allowing community to take over the development of new features. It is freeware software that`s loaded with lots of feature made by Mozilla. It`svery user friendly so people can easily use this. Thunderbird providing features are:

Mail Account Setup Wizard. Personalized Email Addresses. Tabbed Email. Entering a new address in the address book. Multiple Channel Chat. Attachment Reminder. Managing Add-ons. Automated Update.

Thunderbird can manage multiple email, newsgroup, and news feed accounts and supports multiple identities within accounts. Thunderbird incorporates a Bayesian spam filter; a whitelist based on the included address book, and can also understand classifications by server-based filters such as Spam Assassin. Thunderbird supports POP and IMAP. It also supports LDAP address

completion. The built-in RSS/Atom reader can also be used as a simple news aggregator. Thunderbird supports the S/MIME standard;extensions such as Enigmail add support for the Open PGP standard. Thunderbird provides enterprise and government-grade security features such as SSL/TLS connections to IMAP and SMTP servers. It also offers native support for S/MIME secure email (digital signing and message encryption using certificates). Any of these security features can take advantage of smartcards with the installation of additional extensions. Optional security protections also include disabling loading of remote images within messages, enabling only specific media types and disablingJavaScript. The French military uses Thunderbird and contributes to its security features, which are claimed to match the requirements for NATO's closed messaging system.

AMO

Mozilla Add-ons also known as AMO, is a resource for finding and installing add-ons for Mozilla products like Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, and Mozilla Sunbird. These add-

ons include extensions, themes, dictionaries, search bar "search engines," and plug-in. Mozilla Add-ons is targeted to end-users, not just software developers. Many Mozilla applications contain direct links to the website, and contain settings to poll for updates to the extensions and the application itself.

Extensions are especially popular with Mozilla Add-ons. Extensions can be used to modify the behavior of existing features to the application or add entirely new features. Mozilladevelopers intend for the browser to be a fairly minimalistic application in order to reduce software bloat and bugs, while retaining a high degree of extensibility, so that individual users can add the features that they prefer. Some extensions are used to change the interface of the application. These are not tobe confused with personas, which are a theme management feature. There is also an add-on, which moves the menu bar to where the window title normally is on windows machines. Extensions are generally used to add functions to the application. Extension might add include RSS readers, bookmark organizers, toolbars, website-specific client programs, FTP, e-mail, mouse gestures, proxy server switching, or developer tools. Many Firefox extensions implement features formerly part of the Mozilla Suite,such as the ChatZilla IRC client and a calendar. Many extensions can change the content of a webpage as it is rendered. Adblock extensions can prevent the browser from loading images, which areadvertisements. Another popular extension, Greasemonkey, allows the user to install scripts which modify a targeted subset of webpages on the fly in a manner which is the programmatic complement to user style sheets. Extensions also exist for frivolous, humorous or satirical purposes. Some allude to historical features of the Firefox browser.

Plugins is a software component that adds a specific feature to an existing software application. When an application supports plug-ins, it enables customization. The common examples are the

The project was started in 2005, and initially led by Mozilla Corporation employee Deb Richardson in 2005. Documentation efforts have been led by Eric Shepherd since 2006.

The initial content for the website was provided by DevEdge, for which the Mozilla Foundation was granted a license by AOL. Significant effort has been made to migrate content from mozilla.org. Many pages on mozilla.org now redirect to MDN. The site now contains a mix of content migrated from DevEdge and mozilla.org, as well as original and more up-to-date content. Documentation was also migrated from XULPlanet.com.

MDN has a newsgroup (mozilla.dev.mdc) and an IRC channel #devmo on the Mozilla IRC Network. MDN is funded by the Mozilla Foundation and Mozilla Corporation with servers and employees.

History

In July 2011, Mozilla Corporation launched the Persona and it wasentirely developed by Mozilla in January 2012 in its own website.Very recently, on March 2014, Mozilla found that it was dropping full time developers from Persona and moving the project to community ownership.

FeaturesThere are several features of Persona. These are:

PERSONA REPLACES MULTIPLE PASSWORDS:

Sites such as Mozilla Webmaker, Trovebox and Voost use persona instead of username to sign one in. This means only need one password to sign in into many sites.

PERSONA PRESERVES ONES PRIVACY: Persona doesn’t track one’s activity around the web. It creates awall between signing one in and what one do once one is there. The history of what sites one visits is stored only on one’s own computer.

PERSONA IS FLEXIBLE:

Within Persona, one’s identity is his or her e-mail address. One can use as many email address as he wants. But still he will onlyneed one password.

The browser, the provider and the website

The browser stores a list of user verified email addresses (certificates issued by the identity providers), and demonstratesthe user's ownership of the addresses to the website using cryptographic proof.

The certificates must be renewed every 24 hours by logging-in to the identity provider (which will usually mean entering the emailand a password in a Web form on the identify provider's site). Once done, they will be usable for authenticating to web sites with the same browser for the rest of the day, without entering passwords again (Single Sign-On).

The decentralization aspects of the protocol reside in the theoretical support of any identity provider service, while in

practice it seems to rely mainly on Mozilla's servers currently (which may in turn delegate email address verification, see identity bridging below). However, even if the protocol heavily relies on a central identity provider, this central actor only knows when browsers renew certificates, and cannot in principle monitor where the certificates will be used.

Identity Bridging

Mozilla announced "Identity Bridging" support for Persona in July, 2013: As they describe on their blog: "Traditionally...Mozilla would send you an email and ask you to click on the confirmation link it contained. With Identity Bridging, Persona learned a new trick; instead of sending confirmation emails, Persona can ask you to verify your identity via your email provider’s existing OpenID or OAuth gateway." Thisannouncement included support for existing users of the Yahoo Mail service. In August 2013, Mozilla announced support for Identity Bridging with all Gmail accounts. They wrote in this additional announcement that "combined with our Identity Bridge for Yahoo, Persona now natively supports more than 700,000,000 active email users. That covers roughly 60-80% of people on most North American websites."

Deployment

Persona relies heavily on the Javascript client-side program running in the user's browser, making it widely usable.

Support of authentication to Web applications via Persona can be implemented by CMSs such as Drupal, Serendipity, WordPress, Tiki or SPIP. There is also support for Persona in the Phonegap platform (used for compiling HTML5 apps into mobile apps). Mozilla provides its own Persona server at persona.org. It is also possible to set up your own Persona identity provider, providing federated identity.

A simpler way to sign in

At Mozilla, we believe that your online life is your business. With that in mind, we created Persona to make it easier to sign in to websites.

Persona allows you to sign in to sites using any of your existingemail addresses; and if you use Yahoo! or Gmail for email, you will be able to sign in without having to create a new password.

Roam free

Many sign-in systems track your behavior around the web; and someeven share that info with other sites and social networks. We believe you should control how your personal information is shared. Signing in using Persona requires only a valid email address; allowing you to provide personal information on as-needed basis, when and where you think it’s appropriate.

Easy for developers

Persona makes things easy for site owners, too. Enabling Browser ID, the underlying Persona technology, on your site only takes a few lines of code and helps build good relationships by providingusers with a trusted sign-in option. It’s a win-win!

Creating the web is the heart of our work. We build tools like Thimble, X-Ray Goggles and Popcorn Maker that allow people to create amazing content while peeking under the hood of the internet, getting familiar with all the moving parts and getting their hands dirty with foundational elements like HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

THIMBLE

Thimble is best for web creator for beginners. Some of the projects users can choose from are creating an online portfolio, an avatar or a web resume, or even make their own Internet Defense League webpage.

Thimble’s editor is far from a traditional full-fledged editor. It has simple tools like the syntax hints helper, spell checker, preview and text sizes, probably a good tool for beginner-level designers and developers.

Thimble’s hints popup, another wonderful feature for beginners lets the user view some useful hints and information when editingor viewing a line of code or certain CSS/HTML element.

Thimble also makes it easy to publish your creations and share them with friends.

The publish feature gives you two links: one, for sharing with all your friends and followers and two, for editing published projects in the future. In the publish project popup there is also a tab to share your project on Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

X-RAY GOGGLES

To learn coding, sometimes you have to look at how other sites are coded. Mozilla Webmaker’s X-Ray Goggles, when activated, letsyou inspect the code behind any web page anywhere from Hongkiat.com to your own blog.

It work’s basically like the browser’s inspect tool but with fewer features. Installing it is as easy as drag-an-dropping it into the browser’s bookmark bar. After you install it, you can use Goggles on whichever website you browse in the future.

To use Goggles, type in the URL of the website in which you wouldlike to inspect. The default Goggles URL displays to you a basic

webpage with an image embedded on it.

Goggles also has a handy built in editor so you can remix and adapt the webpage live in Goggles, and see the changes right before your eyes. Goggles also allow you to publish your remixed and created work in Goggles basically the same way that Thimble does. Just make sure the content you are remixing is not copyrighted.

POPCORN MAKER

Popcorn Maker makes it easy to enhance, remix and share web mediaand video. Start it up, type in a video URL of HTML5, Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud.

This is where the fun starts to happen; you can then remix the videos by adding elements and media features on your sidebar by dragging and dropping to the appropriate timeframe of the video.

Learning through making is a core part of Mozilla's mission. We provide starter projects, templates and event guides to inspire teachers and learners at every level to create on the web and share their knowledge with others. Every month there are numerous events held on Mozilla and itz activities across the globe. The biggest events are the Annual Summit and the MozCamp. The Mozilla Festival is an annual event where hundreds of passionate people explore the Web, learn together and make things that can change the world. With the emphasis on making—the mantra of the Festival is "less yack, morehack." Journalists, coders, filmmakers, designers, educators, gamers, makers, youth and anyone else, from all over the world, are encouraged to attend, with attendees from more than 40 countries, working together at the intersection between freedom, the Web, and that year’s theme.

Mozilla Summit

Mozilla Summit are the global event with active contributors and Mozilla staffs to develop a shared understanding of Mozilla's mission together. Over 2,000 people representing 90 countries and114 languages gathered in Santa Clara, Toronto and Brussels in 2013.

MozCamps

MozCamps are the critical part of the Grow Mozilla initiative which aims to grow the Mozilla Community. These camps aim to bring core contributors from around the world together. They are intensive multi-day summits that include keynote speeches by Mozilla leadership, workshops and breakout sessions (lead by paidand un-paid staff), and fun social outings. All of these activities combine to reward contributors for their hard work, engage them with new products and initiatives, and align all attendees on Mozilla's mission.

Bugzilla Bug Tracking system

Bugzilla is a Web-based general-purpose bug tracker and testing tool originally developed and

source software by Netscape Communications in 1998, it has been adopted by a variety of

organizations for use as a bug tracking system for both free and open source software and

proprietary projects and products. Bugzilla is used, among others, by Mozilla Foundation,

Wikimedia Foundation, WebKit, NASA, Yahoo!, GNOME, KDE, Apache, Red Hat and Novell.

Bugzilla was originally written by Terry Weissman in 1998 for thenascent Mozilla.org project,

as an open source application to replace the in-house system thenin use at Netscape

Communications for tracking defects in the Netscape Communicator suite. Originally written in

Tcl, Terry decided to port Bugzilla to Perl before its release aspart of Netscape's early open

source code drops, with the hopes that more people would be able to contribute to it as Perl

seemed to be a more popular language at the time.

While the potential exists in the code to turn Bugzilla into a technical support ticket system, task
