ALL CULTURES IN JESUS CHRIST

Today is a very special day for our Mount Zion Filipino Adventist Church and I invite all church members to welcome our speaker, Pastor Jakov Bibulovic (Ontario Conference Director of Church Growth, Church Planting and Evangelism) to our church pulpit. I hope that he and his family will enjoy experiencing Filipino culture and food this evening and feel at home with us.

Our Cultural Day is held once a year in June, which is around the same time of Independence Day in Philippines. Mount Zion Filipino church members celebrate the culture and heritage of their nations, although it is more specific to the Filipino Culture. While most of our church members came from Philippines, there are at least 12 other ethnicities or nationalities which are part of our church family.

Our church has been starting to reflect the rich drapery of cultures and diversity found in our city, Toronto, considered as one of the most multi-cultural city in the world. So today, we celebrate God’s love as manifested through the varied cultural heritage that is represented in our church.

Let me reflect on the example of Jesus relating to cultures and heritage. Jesus was, in crucial respects, a religious and cultural revolutionary. He taught that although God had revealed himself uniquely to the Jews (John 4:22), Jewishness alone was no guarantee of favor with God (Matt. 8:10-12). He taught that people should worship with God centered in the heart, not in Jerusalem (John 4:21-24). He also taught that a kind Samaritan or a repentant tax collector was better than a pious, proud and heartless Pharisee (Luke 10:29-38; 18:9-14). Actually, he also invited women to be his disciples (Luke 10:38-42). He granted healing to Gentiles who were the outcasts in that day society (Matt. 15:21-28) and also ate with the outcasts (Luke 19:1-10).

As we celebrate the Cultural Day, let’s learn from these three points, which may help us understand the relation between Christ and our plurality of cultures. First point, Jesus is the Reconciler of cultures because he is the one who can bring people of different cultures together. He brought about reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles through his death. Second point, Jesus Christ is Redeemer of cultures because He brings wholeness and hope to people of all cultures. He offers forgiveness to people of all cultures. Christ forgave the worst sinners of His own culture (Matt. 6:14-15). People from all cultures can love each other because Christ offers healing, cleansing, and hope to people of all cultures. Final point, Jesus Christ is the Ruler of all cultures because He is the one who establishes the standards by which all cultures are ultimately to be judged. He also brings people of all cultures together to confess their need of redemption and to place their trust in Him instead of in false self-sufficiency of their proud cultures.

Jesus left us a great example of having accepting and loving relationships regardless our different cultures and nationalities. When we submit to Christ as our Reconciler, Redeemer, and Ruler, we will experience true love and peace. Therefore, let’s continue to celebrate our cultural differences, but continue to learn from Christ’s examples of loving and accepting each other.

In His Ministry,

Pastor Sereivudh Ly, D,Min.
