The purposes of this study to find the moral values on selected songs lyrics by

American singers and the Islamic perspective toward moral values on selected songs

lyrics by American singers. Subject in this study are song lyrics that consider and

containing moral values. The writer used Linda‟s theory and also Halstead‟s theory.

This study is qualitative descriptive because this study aims to make systematic,

factual, accurate description of the moral values in the five songs lyric by American

singers, namely Dear mr. President by Pink, The climb by Miley Cyrus, Firework by

Katty Perry, Blank Space by Taylor Swift and the last Take A Bow by Rihana. The

data was analyzed systematically based on the data. The writer used qualitative

research and descriptive method qualitative research is a kind of research carried out

to understand the phenomena that occur in research subject such as musical note;

intonation and meaning of song lyrics by describe it in words and using various

scientific method.

The result shows that there are six kinds of moral values found on selected songs

lyrics by American Singers, they are peace-love, honesty, sincerity, enthusiasm,

loyalty and bravery and the Islamic Perspective Toward Moral Values on Selected

Songs Lyrics By American Singers, such as sincerity where good president and good

relationship, patience where keep trying, do not give up, keep praying, cheating

partner, strong people, be a good woman, good household and the struggle, charity

love where lower class people and sincerity humbleness.

Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menemukan nilai-nilai moral pada lirik lagu yang

dipilih oleh penyanyi Amerika dan nilai-nilai moral dalam perspektif Islam pada lirik

lagu yang dipilih oleh penyanyi Amerika. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah lirik lagu

yang mempertimbangkan dan mengandung nilai-nilai moral. Penulis menggunakan

teori Linda dan juga teori Halstead.

Penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif karena penelitian ini bertujuan untuk

membuat deskripsi yang sistematis, faktual, akurat dari nilai-nilai moral dalam lima

lagu lirik oleh penyanyi Amerika, yaitu Dear mr. Presiden oleh Pink, Pendakian oleh

Miley Cyrus, Firework oleh Katty Perry, Blank Space oleh Taylor Swift dan yang

terakhir Take A Bow oleh Rihana. Data dianalisis secara sistematis berdasarkan data.

Penulis menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dan metode deskriptif penelitian kualitatif

adalah jenis penelitian yang dilakukan untuk memahami fenomena yang terjadi pada

subjek penelitian seperti musik; intonasi dan makna lirik lagu dengan

menggambarkannya dalam kata-kata dan menggunakan berbagai metode ilmiah.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada enam jenis nilai moral yang ditemukan

pada lirik lagu yang dipilih oleh Penyanyi Amerika, yaitu cinta damai, kejujuran,

ketulusan, antusiasme, kesetiaan dan keberanian dan nilai-nilai moral dalam perspektif

Islam, seperti ketulusan di mana presiden yang baik dan hubungan yang baik,

kesabaran di mana terus berusaha, jangan menyerah, terus berdoa, pasangan tidak

berselingkuh, orang kuat, jadilah wanita yang baik, rumah tangga yang baik dan

perjuangan, kasih amal di mana orang-orang kelas bawah dan ketulusan kerendahan

hati.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Problem

Song lyrics are someone‟s expression of a thing that has been seen, heard,

or experienced. For expressing the exprience, the poet or song writer plays word

and languages to create attraction and distinctiveness towards the lyrics or poetry.

In general, the way person is writing song lyrics is like poetry, the lines do not

continue to the edge of the page. According to Hudayah, the definition of lyrics

or song lyrics can be considered poetry as well as vice versa and accordingly,

such as the definition of poetry texts not only suffers the types of literature but

also advertising, proverb, slogan, prayers and pop songs.3

Music is a media to express about the human feeling. According to

Mustolehudin song is the combination between music and lyric.4 English song

lyrics actually have different specificities than other language songs such as

pressurized language always the length of the sound and the tone rises or is higher

than the other syllables. Besides that in the level of phrases, sentences or klausa,

there is a pattern of intonation patterns, which are also a mixture of up and down

tones, short length of pressure and jed (pause).5 Then in these lyrics of song for

president and people in the world to be care and strong. Like the lyrics below:

If the people try to understand the context from this song, it will be

interesting, because we can get motivation to make our life be better than before

and try to make our dream come true. So, the writer wants to makes a research

about some of songs lyrics by American Singers. Making a song is not only for

entertaining, but also for human struggle values. There are so many positive values

conveyed through the song. She makes literature as a place to strunggle the human

values. In the lyrics of song there are so many the truth stories and makes the

songs lyrics interesting to see, to understand more deeply, to do the research in

order to get validity information about how the lyric write.

Case of moral values is a theme which interest for all of people in the

world. The stories of human life in this world always talk about moral values.7 In

the modern life moral values become a theme that fundamanental case in human

life. So, making moral values as a theme of analysis is interesting because this

theme is important to human life. Human always is searching good thing in this

life and they hate the bad thing, so moral values is a case along of human story.

Pink is an artist who cares about case of human life.8 As the lyric above he was

delivered message kind of thing to people around the world. The lyrics is not only

for entertaining, but also for the struggle of human life.

In the entertaining world, the artist that srunggle for human is not too

much. Therefore, after rising and understanding the problem in the song, the writer

realized this case is very interesting and full of demanding to be analyzed further.

The writer is interested to analyze moral values in songs lyrics by American

singers, because the song describes about human life, especially about homeless

and tragic condition on the street. Besides that in the perspective of Islam by

analyzing songs lyrics by American singers that have good values can give

sympathy, distance from all of badthings and also create Sincerity among humans,

because in the song someone can tell freely about what they feel and what they see

in everyday life without having to be banned by certain parties.

Moral values are the standards of good evil, which govern an individual‟s

behavior and choices. Individual‟s moral may derive from society and

government, religion, or self. The writer used the songs that are widely interested

by many people and famous or best selling.

The writer is interested in doing research of moral values in Dear Mr.

President by Pink, Take A Bow by Rihana, The Climb by Miley Cyrus, Firework

by Katy Perry, and Blank Space by Taylor Swift by using mimesis theory and

moral philosopical approach. The writer wants to know the moral values and the

Islamic perspective toward moral values on selected song lyrics by American

singers entitled “Moral Values Found on Selected Songs Lyrics by American

Singers”.

1.2 Formulation of the Problem

Based on the background of the problem, the writer formulate two research

question as follow:

1. What are the moral values found in selected songs lyrics by American

singers?

2. What is the Islamic perspective toward moral values on selected songs lyrics

by American singers?

1.3 Limition of the Problem

In this research the writer limits the problem only in American songs lyrics

and focused in the moral values and the Islamic perspective toward moral values

on selected song lyrics by American singers. The writer tries to see the moral

values on the true facts. The writer also studies how the background story from

lyric of the song. The writer got ten best-seller songs, but the writer only chooses

five songs lyric by American singers, namely Dear mr. President by Pink, The

climb by Miley Cyrus, Firework by Katty Perry, Blank Space by Taylor Swift and

the last Take A Bow by Rihana.

1.4 Purpose of the Research

Based on the formulation of the problem the writer want to find two

purposes as follow:

1. To finds out the moral values found in selected songs lyrics by American

singers.

2. To know the Islamic perspective toward moral values on selected song lyrics

by American singers.

1.5 Significance of the Research

In this research, the first one the writer would like to finds out the moral

values in songs lyric by American singers and the Islamic perspective toward

moral values on selected song lyrics by American singers. The writer hopes after

analysis this songs lyrics writer can learn more about moral values in this life and

can apply better than before and also the writer hopes this research gives

contributions to the devolopment of knowledge, and as additional information

especially for student on Adab and Humanities Faculty.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1 Mimetic Theory

Mimetic is a theory that represents of reality. This theory says that the

literary work should be an imitation of realities. Mimetic is a technical copying

the movements or appearances of someone or something else. According to

Halliwel Stephen, the aesthetic of mimesis, in this book, stephen quoted the plato

words “Everything we say must surely be mimesis and image making.9‟‟. So,

since people learn literary with critical thinking, rise up a question, as far as the

literary works reflects the reality. The other opinion from Jan Van Luxemburg,

Miekel Bal, and Williem G. Weststeijin, in translated book by Dick Hartoko also

say that this mimetic theory has two sides. In the first part is that people who

enjoy literary works always ask to what extent literary works reflect reality, and

on the other hand people are also demanding that literature reflects reality.

Aristotle argued that this theory is not only imitates the reality but also a

creative process from a poet with the reality.10

Then a poet makes it similar with

realities. “Aritoteles menilai sastra lebih tinggi dari pada penulisan sejarah.

Dalam sejarah ditampilkan sebuah peristiwa yang hanya satu kali terjadi, sebuah

fakta, tetapi dalam sastra, lewat sebuah peristiwa konkret, dibeberkan suatu

pemandangan umum dan luas”. From the opinion above, Aritoteles give explain

how a literary works better then a history, he argues that the reality works have

general point of view which able to interpretations for many situations, exactly,

the reality works have to correlate with the objective reality.11

Mimetic describes

completely. The term mimetic is derived from the Greek mimesis, and the

meaning is to imitate. The mimetic is a figure of speech for the words or actions

of another are imitate and the deliberate imitation of the behavior of one group op

people by another as a factor in social change. Derrida a France philosopher uses

the concept of mimesis in relation to texts-which are non disposable doubles that

always stand in relation to what has preceded them.

2.2 Moral Philosophical Approach

In this research, the writer uses moral philosopical approach. Ethics or moral

philosopy is a branch of Philosophy that involves systematizing, defending, and

recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct. The field of ethics, along

with aesthetics, concern matters of value, and thus comprises the branch of

philosophy called axiology. Ethics seeks to resolve questions of human morality

by defining concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice,

justice and crime. As a field of intellectual inquiry, moral philosophy also is

related to the fields of moral psychology, descriptive ethics, and value theory.

According to Joseph Rickaby, S J. Moral philosophy is the science of human acts

in their bearing on human hapinnes and human duty.12

Moral Philosophy is

divided into Ethics, Deontology, and Natural Law. Ethics consider human acts in

their bearing on human happiness or what is the same thing, in their agreement or

disagreement with man's rational nature, and their making for or against his last

end. There are three areas of study within etchics that is:

a. Meta-ethics, concerning the theoretical meaning and reference of moral

propositions, and how their truth values can be determined.

b. Normative etchics, concerning the practical means of determining a moral

course of action.

c. Applied ethics, concerning what a person is obligated or permitted to do in

a specific situation or a particular domain of action.

Meta ethics is the branch of Philosophical ethics that asks how we

understand, we know about, and what we mean when we talk about what is right

and what is wrong. Normative ethics is the study of ethical action. It is the branch

of ethics that investigates the set of questions that arise when considering how one

ought to act, morally speaking. Normative ethics is distinct from meta ethics

because normative ethics examiners standars for the rightness and wrongnesss of

actions, while meta ethics studies the meaning of moral language and the

mataphysics of moral facts. Applied ethics refers to the practical application of

moral considerations. It is ethics with respect to real world actions and their moral

considerations in the areas of private and public life, the professions, health,

technology, law, and leadership.

2.3 Moral Values

Moral relates to the principles of what is right and wrong behavior, and with

the differences between good and bad. Moral also define as principles or standars

of good behavior.13

Moral is a norm of life that given the position of privilege in

the activity of civization life. According to Hurlock morality is manners, habits,

customs and rules of behavior that have become habits for members of a culture.

True morality is behavior which conforms to social standards and which is

also carried out voluntarity by the indivudual. It comes with the transition

from external to internal authority and consist of conduct regulated from

wihin. It is accompaned by a feeling of personal responsibility for the act.

Added to this it involves giving primary consideration to the welfare of the

group, while personal desires or gains are relegated to apposition of

secondary importance.14

In Burhanuddin book, he says that there is a difference between moral and

ethics. Etika adalah cabang filsafat yang berbicara mengenai nilai dan norma

moral yang menentukan prilaku manusia dan hidupnya. According to Magnis

Suseno in Burhanuddin Salam book, when he makes the different between moral

and ethis, he says that:

Yang memberi kita norma tentang bagaimana kita harus hidup adalah

moralitas. Sedangkan etika justru hanya melakukan refleksi kritis atas

norma atau ajaran moral terserbut. Atau kita juga bisa mengatakan bahwa

moralitas adalah petunjuk konkret yang siap pakai tentang bagaimana kita

harus hidup.sedangkan etika adalah perwujudan dan pengejawantahan

secara kritis dan rasional atas ajaran moral yang siap pakai itu.keduanya

mempunyai pungsi yang sama, yaitu memberi kita orientasi bagaimana kita

harus melangkah dalam hidup ini.15

According to Zuldafrial moral is a teaching about the good and bad of an act

and behavior, morals, obligations, etc. Moral is in accordance with ideas generally

accepted about human actions, which are good and reasonable. He concludes that

moral is an action that fits the size actions that are generally accepted by certain

social or environmental entities. Furthermore, there was a difference between

morality and ethics. Moral is practical while ethics are theoretical. Moral talk as-is,

while ethics talk about what should be. The moral field is the field of human life is

seen in terms of its goodness as human beings. Moral norms are bench marks to

determine the correct attitude and human actions are seen in terms of good and bad

as humans and not as certain and limited role actors. So according to him that

becomes the moral problem is whether humans are good or bad. It menas that

values are the standards that apply in people's lives, for example customs,

manners, and values contained in the pancasila are life values that become the grip

of the whole Indonesian citizens. Moral values are the result of process

comprehension implementing of God and humanity values in life. These values

will guide human knowledge and creativity appropriately. Linda said that moral

values can be divided into two groups as follows:

1. The value of being is a value within human being involved into the behavior

and the way we treat others, which include values of being are: honesty,

bravery, peace, love, confidence, protection, discipline, sincerity, knowing

boundaries, and suitability.

2. The value of giving is a value that need to be practiced or provided which

would then be accepted as giving, which include values of being are: loyalty,

trustworthy, respect, love, affection, sensitive, altruism, kindness, friendliness,

fair, and humane.16

2.4 Moral Values According to Islamic Perspective

All the teachings of Islam contain good moral values, there are many moral

values in life such as, Sincerity, hard work, independence, peace of mind,

responsibility and others. Moral values in Islam aim to determine human activity

in a Muslim society, and to promote and control their behavior to the benefit of

the whole society and its individuals, and to bring for all individuals a good

conclusion in the other life. It aims to integrate human attributes, behavior,

activity that aims to prepare followers of the Lord, whom Islam described them

and clarified the path of goodness for them. According to Halstead moral values in

Islam then, whether they are individual such as sincerity, patience, charity love,

soul combating, or common such as self-feeling, obligation, and call for Islam,

are meant to bring individual and society benefit and protect human benefit.17

1. Sincerity

Sincerity is the attitudes and actions that always want to help others and

the people in need. Some people will need practical support both inside the

home and outside it. Local authorities have a legal responsibility to help

families. Many moral views in Islam perspectives about Sincerity, It high-

quality care to patients of the Muslim faith requires an understanding of the

differences in cultural and spiritual values. Halstead said in Nuriman important

differences include diet, ideas of modesty, privacy, touch restriction, and

alcohol intake restriction.18

In every perspective related to Sincerity in Islam.

It means that Sincerity is a term that generally describes all forms of personal

care and other practical assistance for people and adults who need extra

support. According to the verse below: Surah Al-Ma'idah 5 : 2

The meaning: you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allah or [the

sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the

sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the

safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty

from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out

of ihram, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a

people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram

lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and

piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear

Allah ; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.19

From the paragraph above describes the moral values according to

Islamic perspective which invites us to help each other, be more sensitive

and care for those who need it more.

2. Patience

Everyone has his own strengths and ways to deal with difficulties in life.

one of them is by patience. In Islam perspective never gives up is the make

someone be better than before. Halstead said in Nuriman when someone always

making many mistakes, it doesn‟t matter always be failed. 20

Because Allah always

watches us, Allah loves the people always patience to him. Never loses hope to

Allah, a powerful reminder from him about not losing hope from him. He always

helps his servant from difficulties and never gives up also make due to him.

Always remember him ever according to the paragraph below:

The meaning: For indeed, with hardship will be easy. 21

From the paragraph above explains the moral values according to

the Islamic perspective in song lyrics The climb by Miley Cyrus that visits

us to always be strong and optimistic to face difficulties in life. (Q. Al-

insiyirah:5).

3. Soul Combating

There is always a mountain of problems ahead but life must continue to

run and solve problems in a good way and never despair, rest assured God will

not test beyond the ability of his servant. Soul combating in psychology refers

to the process of finding solutions to problems encountered in life. Solutions to

these problems are usually situation- or context-specific. Halstead said in

Nuriman the process starts with problem finding and problem shaping, where

the problem is discovered and simplified. 22

The next step is to generate

possible solutions and evaluate them. Finally a solution is selected to be

implemented and verified. Problems have a goal to be reached and how you

get there depends upon problem orientation (problem-solving coping style and

skills) and systematic analysis. according to the verse below:

The meaning: O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and

despair not of relief from Allah, inded, no one despairs of relief

from Allah expect the disbelieving people. 23

From the paragraph above explains about moral values which

invites us to rise from adversity and never despair. (Q. Yusuf: 87).

4. Charity Love

Humans have never escaped from the name that is erroneous and wrong,

especially about the problems of life, friends, family and romance. Halstead said in

Nuriman charity love sometimes makes hearts weak but behind the problem there

must be a solution, one of them by remembering Allah24

, according to the verse

below:

The meaning: Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the

remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of

Allah hearts are assured.25

From paragraph above explains the moral values according to Islamic

perspective, anything which makes the heart upset because of love or the world

to back and prostrate to the one who creates because only by remembering the

heart becomes calm. (Surat Ar-ra'd: 28).

From the explanation above it can be concluded that threre are four kinds of

moral Values According to Islamic perspective, such as Sincerity , Patience,

Soul Combating and Charity Love. The writer used Halstead‟s theory to find out

the Islamic perspective toward moral values on selected song lyrics by American

singers.

2.5 Song Lyrics

Song lyrics is an expression of someone about something that has seen, heard

or experinced. In expressing his experience, the poet or creator songs doing games

of words and used language to create attraction and distinctivennes of the lyrics or

poems. Support and toying with emotions and fellings with the aim of instilling an

attitude or value then the person can be perceived as fair, true and correct. Song is

a short piece of music, usually with words. It combines melody and vocals,

although some composers have written instrumental pieces, or musical works

without words, that mimic the quality of a singing voice. The words of a song are

called lyrics. Lyrics can include a series of verses, the longer sections of the song

that tell the story, and a refrain, a short phrase repeated at the end of eververse.

Songs can have a simple structure of one or two verses, or a more complex one

with multiple verses and refrains.

Songs usually have a meter or beat. Whether you sing or speak the lyrics, you

can feel a pattern or pulse in the way the words move the song forward. The word

'song' has been around for a very long time, and it connects back to old English

and old norse languages. As such a history suggests, songs are used for many

purposes namely to tell stories, express emotions, or convey a belief in faith.

Sometimes they give instructions or help make difficult, repetitive work a little

less tiresome.26

According to Awe, seperti permainan vokal gaya bahasa dan penyimpangan

makna kata merupakan permainan bahasa dalam menciptakan lirik lagu. Selain

itu juga notasi musik dan melodi yang disesuaikan dengan lirik digunakan untuk

memperkuat lirik, yang sehingga pendengar semakin terbawa dengan apa yang

dipikirkan pengarangnya.27

It means that songs that are formed from the

relationship between elements of music with elements of poetry or song lyrics are

one form of mass communication. In this condition, the song is also a medium for

delivering messages by communicators to communicants in large numbers

through mass media. Messages can have various forms, both oral and written.

Song lyrics have the form of a message in the form of writing words and

sentences that can be used to create an atmosphere and a certain picture of

imagination to the listener so that it can also create diverse meanings.

2.6 Review of Related Research

The study about moral values had ever been studied by several researchers.

First, a research by Ai Lisda entitled Religion as of The Moral Value In Sami

Yusuf's Song Lyrics Album In My Ummah. Her study analyzed the Religion as

moral value one of the ten english-language lyrics Sami Yusuf's work in the album

My Ummah. This study used the theory of William Wordsworth about morals in

literature. Researchers found data about the moral message in the lyrics of the song

that contains moral messages such as helping each others, respecting parents,

politeness, keeping the peace, and repent. The values of Islam, researchers get the

data from the books pertaining to Islamic teachings and moral values in Islam.

Descriptive qualitative method used by researchers to find the results. The data

collected in this study come from the lyrics of songs in the album my ummah Sami

Yusuf's work that shows the moral message of the lyrics are rooted in Islamic

values.28

The second researcher is Yovi Torangga Trg. He studied about The

Analysis of Moral Values in Westlife's Selected Songs. This study aimed to

describe the moral values and benefits of the moral values in the life depicted in

the lyrics Westlife. The method used in this research is analysis. The data source

of this research is a Westlife album entitled "Greatest Hits" consisting of four

songs. The technique used to analyze the data by performing a few steps, among

others, (1) read and listen to 4 lyrics Westlife album Greatest Hits, (2) understand

the content of the lyrics Westlife, and (3) analyze the moral values and benefits of

the moral values in the life depicted in the lyrics Westlife. The analysis showed

that the Westlife song lyrics is a song that is interesting to study.29

The third researcher is R. Amirudin Tjitraprawira. He studied about Moral

and Educational Values Found on Madura Folk Song. The writer tries to analysis

of moral and educational values on Madura folk songs. The discussion in this

thesis the author tried to review the pedagogical values particularly with regard to

the morality contained in the lyrics of Madura folk song. The author only took

eight songs contained in a book of poetry titled Madura folk songs "set song

Madura Regions" in 2003 by the author R. Amirudin Tjitraprawira namely; “Lir

Saalir”, “Tondu‟ Majang”, “Pajjhar Langgu”, “Caca Aghuna”, “Pa‟-Opa‟ Iliing”,

“Pacakang Alako”, “Entar Akarang”, “Les Balesan”. The researcher uses

descriptive qualitative approach in finding moral and educational values. The

research method is used from the researcher itself because for analysis the data use

interpretation of own words.30

The fourth researcher is Lutfy Fajar Hidayah. He studied about An

Analysis of Indonesian Moral Values Found in the Song Lyrics Forgive Me Album

by Maher Zain. Subject in this study are song lyrics that consider and containing

moral values. This study was qualitative descriptive because this study is aim to

make systematic, factual, accurate description of the moral values in the song

lyrics forgive me album. The data was analyzed systematically based on the data

Moleong (2009:6) who states that qualitative research is a kind of research carried

out to understand the phenomena that occur in research subject such as musical

note intonation and meaning of song lyrics by describe it in words and using

various scientific method. The result of this analysis is shown eleven moral values

are found in Forgive Me album by Maher Zain songs. The similarities Indonesian

moral values wih the moral values found Maher Zain songs, and the moral values

most frequent in forgive me album by Maher Zain song. The findings of the moral

values in Forgive me album by Maher Zain are eleven. There are religiosity, love

affection, loyalty, sincerity, thankfulness, steadfastness, humbleness, peace loving,

brotherhood, respecting other, and optimism. The indonesian moral values found

in the song lyrics album are religiosity, communicative, and peace-loving. And the

moral values most frequent in the song lyrics album are religiosity, love affection

and loyalty.31

The last researcher is Mohammad Muhyidin. studied about An Analysis of

Semi Yusuf Song‟s Lyric based on Islamic Moral Values. This study was aimed to

describe the moral values of Semi Yusuf‟s songs. The analytical method used in

this study is descriptive qualitative approach of content analysis that involved on

paraphrases and songs are as main data source. The writer used content analysis to

uncover the content of the Semi Yusuf songs. The data are five songs among the

other songs which included in Eid song, The Cave of Hiro, You Come to Me, He

Is There, and Make Me Strong.32

From the review of related above it can be known that the same point this

reseach with them in analyse the song and also used the same method that is

qualitative descriptive. The different point with them in the song itself, where the

writer want to analyse in American song in Islamic prespective.

CHAPTER III

METHOD OF RESEARCH

3.1 Design of Research

In this research, the writer used qualitative research and descriptive

method. A method is really needed and important in the research which are used

to find and to get closer to the answer of the problem. In a research, method

becomes an important part to find the answer and to analyze the result. According

to Denzin and Lincoln define:

Qualitative research is multi method in focus, involving an interpretive,

naturalistic approach to its subject matter. This means that qualitative

researchers study thing in their natural settings, attempting to make sense

of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them.33

Based on that statement, qualitative research are multi method that focus

on interpretive, it is subject matter and qualitative research involves the studied

use and collection of a variety of empirical materials-case study, personal

experiences, interview, observation, historical, life story, introspective, and

visual text that describe routine and problematic moments and meaning in

individuals‟ live. It can be concluded qualitative research that analyzing about

descriptive data that is collected in the form of the object, where descriptive data

such as writer or spoken.

Another opinion about qualitative research from Berg stated that “Qualitative

research refers to the meanings, concepts, definitions, charateristics, metaphors,

symbols, and descriptions, of things.‟‟ According to this definition of qualitative

research emphasized on the object of research. Qualitative method enables the

writer to explore concept whose essence was lost in other research approach such

as beauty, pain, faith, suffering, frustration, hope, and love can be studied as they

were defined and experienced by real people in their everyday lives.34

3.2 Source of Data

Source data were where data were obtained using certain methods in the

form of humans, artifacts, or documents. The information or facts is called the

data.35

In the source of data there are two several of the data as either primary

sources or secondary sources that attempt to analyze the data. The writer looked

further more too primary data. These activities were carried out consciously,

directed and always aim to obtain the information needed. According to

Sugiyono‟s book, source data as bellow; he main data sources in qualitative

research are words, and actions, the rest are additional data such as documents

and others. In this regard the type of data is divided into words and actions, the

data sources are written and photographic36

In this research the data was taken from the on selected song lyrics by

American singers and the writer download the song lyrics by American singers,

website and youtube.

3.3 Techniques of Data Collection

Tehnique of data collecting was the way the writer in collecting all the data

in this research. The writer used technique of documentation to collect the data.

According to Sugiyono in Kaelan‟s book Documents are records of past events,

documents can be in the form of writing, drawings, or monumental work from

someone else. Documents in the form of pictures such as photographs, sketches,

films, videos and others. Documents in the form of works such as works of art,

works of inscription paintings, and others.

The most tradition of qualitative research, the phrase personal document

was used broadly. It means that document we can take the data from anywhere

and in this context its song lyric by micheal heart. In doing collecting the data the

writer trough some step. There were some steps that the writer were done in

collecting the data as follow:

1. The writer opened American singers website and looking for the song

2. The writer opened the vocabulary to know the meaning of songs.

3. The writer took a note the songs.

4. The writer understood the moral values from the songs.

3.4 Technique of Data Analysis

The writer has several techniques from the data analysis, in order to

make this research more specific. In qualitative research, technique analysis

data is used to answer the formulation of the problem. In analysis the data, the

writer used a descriptive analysis. According to Susan Stainback in Sugiyono,

“Data analysis is critical to the qualitative research process. It is to recognition,

study, and understanding of interrelationship and concept in your data that

hypotheses and assertions can be developed and ecaluated”.37

In line with this

statement, the writer used the method. According to Nyoman Kutha

Ratna:“The content in the analysis method consists of two types, namely latent

content and communication content. Latent content is the content contained in

documents and manuscripts, while the content of communication is the

message contained as a communication that occurs. Latent content is the

content as intended by the author, while the communication content is as

manifested in the manuscript relationship with consumers.38

In this research, the writer used technique descriptive analysis because

this research is descriptive. The steps of techniques of data analysis were:

1. Identifying

The writer identified the data and made the assumption or finds the Islamic

perspective toward moral values on selected song lyrics by American

singers.

2. Classifying the data

The writer classified the text of the moral values and also based on Islamic


singers.

3. Analyzing, describing, explaining

The writer analyzed, described and explained the data about the Islamic


singers.

4. Making the Conclusion

After all the data had been analyzing, describing and explaining in the

research, the writer made the conclusion of the research.

CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND ANALYSIS

4.1 The Moral Values Found on Selected Songs Lyrics by American Singers

The writer found that there are six kinds of moral values found on selected songs

lyrics by American Singers and the writer used Linda and Eyre‟s theory, they are

peace-love, honesty, sincerity, enthusiasm, loyalty and bravery.39

4.1.1 Peace-Love

Peace-Love is pure intention to make everyone united in diversity. In

making Peace-Love the people try to apologize with other. Ti can be seen below:

Honesty is telling the truth. And everyone likes it. Telling the truth allows

everyone to know what is exactly happened and help people feel safe and

peaceful inside.

Based on the lyrics above proved that there was good moral value,

this was like lyric We’re not dumb which shows as a leader need to give a

chance to all people to speak up and making an argument and it was not

dumb. Criticism was important to tell to the leader when he made a

mistake.

4.1.3 Sincerity

Sincerity has related with love. People cannot do sincerity without having love.

Sincerity comes from heart that makes pleasure after doing it. It is described

from Santa. He keeps everyone‟s cheer. Even he is bad or good people.

4.1.4 Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is a big spirit in facing all the things. This song can bring the

people to have big spirit. And she tells the peole if every people can make good

or bad thing.

4.1.5 Loyalty

Loyalty holds on promise to other for example loyalty between two best

friends. It happens between Jack, the other guardian and every child in the

word. Santa makes jack promise to be a new guardian

showed by the lyric The best liar goes to you on that lyric singer judge the

people as the liar. Judging other is an action that is disrespectful. However

someone fault to us should not be accusing to judge other with the bad

word.

Based on the research conducted, it was concluded that there are six

kinds of moral values found on selected songs lyrics by American Singers,

they are peace-love, honesty, sincerity, enthusiasm, loyalty and bravery.

4.2 The Islamic Perspective Toward Moral Values on Selected Songs Lyrics

By American Singers

Based on the research finding, the writer found that there are fine kind

of Islamic perspective toward moral values On Selected Songs Lyrics By

American Singers by Roushdy‟s theory.

4.2.1 Sincerity

Attitudes and actions that always want to help others and the

people in need.

4.2.1.1 Good President

means the tenderness expressed by the person before asking someone to do

something in a polite word so that the other person feels appreciated and

not offended.

Based on the words of God tells about a person's faith as a Muslim

is not enough to just stop in the practice of ritual worship, but must also be

proven in the form of muamalah or social interaction with fellow human

beings. In establishing relationships with others, Islam teaches us to show

kindness and compassion. Here are a few verses of the Koran about being

friendly and compassion spread in various surahs in the Koran.

Based on the explanation above it can be concluded that the Islamic

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1 Conclusions

Based on the research conducted, it was concluded that there are six kinds

of moral values found on selected songs lyrics by American Singers, they are

peace-love, honesty, sincerity, enthusiasm, loyalty and bravery and the Islamic

Perspective Toward Moral Values on Selected Songs Lyrics By American Singers,

such as sincerity where good president and good relationship, patience where keep

trying, do not give up, keep praying, cheating parther, strong people, be a good

woman, good household and the struggle, charity love where lower class people

and sincerity humblesness.

5.2 Suggestion

Finally based on the findings and the significances of this study, the writer

wants to give some suggestions for:

1. The findings of this study are also can be used as a reference for English

Literature Department students who study moral value. Especially in

understanding Moral value in the five songs lyric by American singers, namely

Dear mr. President by Pink, The climb by Miley Cyrus, Firework by Katty

Perry, Blank Space by Taylor Swift and the last Take A Bow by Rihana.

2. This study also can give a contribution for the next researchers who are

interested in investigating similar field of study. They can use the findings as

reference to understand the theory of moral values. And the researcher

suggested them to have more literatures related to this study in order to make

the theories more complete. Besides that, they also can use these findings as

comparison and direction for their future research particularly on the way of

analyzing moral values not only in the song lyrics. In addition, the researcher is

also suggested finding the other subject to be analyzed. For example: poetry or

novel.
