2nd Grade and 5th Grade- MLK Day Project

The Second Grade and Fifth Grade classes got together to share and read some quotes that seemed appropriate

when talking about the legacy of Dr. King. They worked together to create these slides to share their impressions.

The quote means that the world should be full of peace. Also that people should be treated equally, and have their rights. They should have the food they need and work for them to do, and that the body, mind, and soul should feel warmth. Kate, Ava, and Jenny

"LET THERE BE JUSTICE FOR ALL. LET THERE BE PEACE FOR ALL. LET THERE BE WORK, WATER, AND SALT FOR ALL. LET EACH KNOW THAT FOR EACH THE BODY, THE WIND AND SOUL HAVE BEEN FREED TO FULFILL THEMSELVES." NELSON MANDELA

We think it means that words are more powerful than any weapon.

Ellie, Rachel, and Sienna

“The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy .” MLK This means that you will do more when you are challenged, then when you are not. This can help us because even though there might be a lot in front of you, you can still pull through.

Max and Anthony

"I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of

their skin, but by the content of their character." MLK

This quote means to look deeper than the skin, and focus on what's on the inside, not on the outside. Our group decided that this quote meant to

focus on the content of someone's character instead of judging someone by how they look. Example: Someone could be really funny or nice, but

they could have a different skin color than you. You would still think that they're hilarious or very nice no matter what skin color they are.

By Peter, Felix and Andrew

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate,

and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

Nelson Mandela

If you got in a argument it's easier to get along with them instead of fighting!

BY KATE AND ANNA

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

MLK

The quote means The only way to make bad stuff go away is to do good stuff.

By Eleanor and Dana

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." -Nelson Mandela We think education is the most powerful weapon because it can solve being unkind. By Henry and Ben

"Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know

each other because they can't communicate; they can't communicate because they are separated."

Our interpretation of this quote it that men hate each other because they shun them. They think they're better than them so they shun them and never get to

know them so they come to hate them.

By Chris and Michaela

"Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant

stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty." MLK

The quote means that in the near future the dark clouds of prejudice will be gone and love and peace will exist.

By Jake and Alex

"It's time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” Maya Angelou

We think it means to teach young people early so they know what to do in life. People

should learn what to do in a fight. They should use their words instead of hitting.

Peter G. and Abby

Always, you can do something right. You never need to hold back or wait for

something to happen. You need to make it happen yourself.

Mason C., Jack, and Craig

“The time is always right to do what is right.” –Martin Luther King Jr.

Our interpretation of the quote:

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of

comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of

challenge and controversy." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

When you are in a place that you hate never fear in your darkest hour, because you know that you'll never be locked in place forever, and

always keep your courage with you."

- Lindsey and Willa

"We have come a long, long way but we still have a long, long way to go." Martin Luther King, Jr.

We think it means that African Americans have come a long way being slaves to not being able to go to any restaurant. But they aren't completely

free and that is what they were going for.

Miles and Cole

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education." Martin Luther King, Jr.

We think that this means - that it is almost in relationship to the Tower Code, with treating people nicely and fairly. When you teach others good they will be good and pass it on.

• "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."-Martin Luther King, Jr.

• We think that this speech means that you should believe in faith all around the world.

• MLK's speech is very good- how MLK changed the world with all his fabulous speeches and especially the one that we got.

• By Will and Andy

This quote means that all people are equal in value no matter what the color of their skin. It also

means that diversity is a good thing, or as the quote says, it makes for a rich tapestry.

"We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no

matter what their color." -Maya Angelou

Jackson and Lidia

"Our goal is freedom, and I believe we are going to get there because however much she strays away from it, the goal of America is freedom." MLK We want freedom in America badly enough that we will work through difficult times, and if we do we will have freedom in America. Russell, Chase, and David

We think this means that the nation will rise up as one to realize the true meaning of religion. That men will stand side by side to be equivalent.

Quinn, Jaden, and Kabir"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its

creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

• Alex: To communicate and to not fight.

• Sasha: Work together to be friends so you won't die sad and alone.

• Alexandria: Be friends with each other and not fight, or fight all the time and die together like fools.

Ideas about quote:

"We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all perish together as fools."~MLK

Rights are as strong as

love.

Sasha, Alex, Alexandria

" Not everybody can be famous. But everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service. " MLK

You might not have a great job. That doesn't mean you're not great at the job. It also means helping your community with other people's

lives and jobs. This is also known as community service.

Jonathan, Sam, Henry

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and

brotherhood can never become a reality." MLK

Someone teasing someone because they are different than someone else, but Martin can't accept that there is no peace between them.
