In October 2016 the God TV international television network launched Out of Zion, a daily devotional program broadcast from Israel and presented by Messianic Jewish leader Ron Cantor.

Out of Zion was created to help viewers learn about Israel, its historic Biblical sites and to understand Scripture from a Jewish perspective. Affirming his role, Cantor says, “I love Israel, not just the people, but the Land and the history. It has long been a dream of mine to go around this country and film, sharing with people about this amazing place.” Born into a Jewish home in Virginia, Ron Cantor came to faith in Yeshua following a supernatural encounter after walking away unharmed from a devastating car accident at age 18. deployed for a few months to Iraq in 2007 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. While working on a mechanical engineering degree, his schooling was interrupted in 2010 and 2012 for three-month tours to Kandahar and Bagram, Afghanistan, respectively. Working on A-10C attack fighters, Rabe’s role is imperative to the Air Force’s successes. His job is to ensure the condition of each air-craft is top-notch for the pilots. Avionics entails troubleshooting and maintaining many aircraft systems, including, but not limited to naviga-tion, weapons delivery, cockpit instruments, electronic warfare, and so on. “We go out to the jet to get it ready. It’s important to look over everything carefully, troubleshoot, and perform any preventative maintenance before the pilot is ready to step. Basically, we make sure that the men and women in these A10s are ready to take off for the mission,” he said. Rabe said during a launch; the pilot is “running up the jet and the crew chief assis-tants with the preflight checks. An avionics troop is on standby next to the jet in case we need to troubleshoot any last minute issues. Once the pilots have taken off, avionics (and maintainers) start fixing other airplanes on the ground to be fully mission capable.” When asked about what, precisely, the Air Force is doing to try to defeat ISIS, he said, “The main thing we are doing is strategic bombing to defeat ISIS’ supplies and immediate threats to our friendly and allied ground troops. Other than that, I can’t go into too much detail.” Rabe, like all military personnel, goes through a series of background checks and se-curity clearances. His degree and experience in the military helped secure his profession as an avionics test engineer. “I am working with the framework software that loads OS (operating systems) and OFS (operating systems projects) onto the aircraft computers. A majority of the job is ensuring that whatever systems are loaded onto the helicopters are government approved and will work perfectly before being deployed to the maintainers on the flight line.” Rabe said this profession compliments what he does with aircraft avionics and vice versa. “The first week I walked into the contract position, I was able to identify key LRUs (line replaceable units), because of their functional similarities.” Military contract positions are not easy to acquire. How difficult was it being able to get his job? “Oh, a recruiter contacted me.” While he recognizes potential for career development, he has always been passionate about the Air Force. As a child he fell in love with airplanes at the DC Air and Space Museum, and assembled model airplanes. His interest stayed with him beyond boyhood. In 2001, he joined the Civil Air Patrol—as he puts it, “Boy Scouts for the Air Force.” The Civil Air Patrol gave Rabe boot camp experiences, and he learned to solo fly a single engine Cessna 172. With the Civil Air Patrol, he participated in basic and advanced Ground Team Search and Rescue schools. As a young adult, Rabe worked a paper route and waited tables in college. He was a Library Technical Assistant, helping students troubleshoot, and maintain com-puter equipment. He was put in charge of AV events at the library—which enhanced his professional platform. Rabe is not one to shy from leadership. Growing up in a Messianic home, Rabe’s parents helped plant Temple Shalom Yisrael (an hour outside of Chicago). Rabe credits his family’s pioneer spirit—and making Messianic Jewish culture fun—to a lot of this passion. Deployment made Rabe mature in his walk with God. “In the military, there are

a lot of people who use foul language. It affects you. You have to deal with the military culture. It’s a constant battle when you are deployed because you are out of your com-fort zone and you have to face the ‘trash’ of the world, whether that is attitudes, danger, impure conversations, and the like. As a believer, before going on a deployment, I was prayed up with high expectations that you are not only going to impact the physical world, but also the spiritual world, and see the war affected by your spiritual action. You get over here and realize that things aren’t what you thought. God has many things already in motion, and He may have you there for other purposes,” he said. Seeing the value of communal worship, Rabe attends Christian and Jewish services when they are available. When in Bagram, he served as a soundman for both Gospel and Contemporary Sunday church services. His unique perspective as a Messianic Jewish believer opened doors for his colleagues to approach him with any questions about Jewish or Christian matters. “It is encouraging,” Rabe said, “to pray and open yourself to be used by God in any way he chooses and conversations lead to His word and message. “For me, during a deployment, there seems to be more frequent and dramatic spiritual highs and lows. There is usually a point that comes where you have to press into God, and He meets you, and He speaks to you. “Coming home is spiritually and men-tally kind of difficult. You are not used to everything. You feel better because you are back emotionally, yet, you are used to high stress and it is hard to come down from that in a gentle way. Thankfully, God has always restored and guided me to grow through all of these experiences. I am used to high levels of stress; it is definitely an adjustment. This deployment is a little different because I am returning home as a family man,” Rabe said. Married as of March 2015, Rabe and his wife Jen, were only married a year and a half when he was called away. “We try to communicate everyday,” said Jen. They have a blended family. Harper, Jen’s seven-year-old son, admires Rabe’s profession. “He thinks it’s the coolest thing,” said Jen. Together the couple serves at Congre-gation Rosh Pina. They host a home group. When not deployed, Rabe is often leading worship and serves as the occasional gabbai during services. Where does Rabe get the drive to serve? Jen said, with restrained passion in her voice, “There is just something inside of Ari. These things are special to him and speak to him. The Messianic community and military are two things he is passionate about.” MT

OutofZion 4Continued from front page Messiah’s Mandate International. Cantor travels around the world, teaching on the Jewish roots of the New Testament and also serves on the leadership teams of Tikkun International and the Tiferet Yeshua Messianic congregation in Tel Aviv. He and his wife, Elana, have three daughters and live in Israel. Cantor said, “We want the world to see that Israel is not some dead museum of what God’s once did, but a living, breathing testimony of what He is doing today. Israel is a modern country, not of warmongering imperialists, but a nation of wonderful people, who are discovering and inventing breakthroughs in technology, medicine, water purification and more.” The name Out of Zion was inspired by the Scripture in Isaiah, “ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem,” (Isaiah 2:3). He said, “The word Zion can refer to Jerusalem or to Mount Zion or to Israel itself. In broadcasting the Word of God from Israel, we are foreshadowing the Isaiah 2:3 Scripture.” Out of Zion, filmed by a God TV crew and funded by the network, consists of daily five-minute episodes shot from varying locations across Israel. Each episode features Cantor giving a Scriptural message from a different place. “We teach on the history of the Bible on location—from Dan to Beersheva, as they say,” he said. The “Baptism is Jewish” episode was shot in Jerusalem, close to several ancient mikvot or Jewish immersion tanks, near where the Temple once stood. Because of historical persecution of the Jewish people at the hands of so-called Christians, many Jews equate baptism with betrayal and renunciation of one's Jewish heritage. How-ever, Cantor teaches that in Biblical times the faithful had to be immersed in water before bringing their sacrifice to the Temple. Immersion was an important part of Temple life long before Christian baptism began. The “Battle in Your Life” episode is an example of Out of Zion faith-building teaching. Filmed at the Valley of Elah where David killed Goliath, (and where God TV has a broadcasting signal) this segment relates David had to endure criticism from his brother shortly before going out to confront the giant, (1 Samuel 17:28). Cantor said the critical words could have wounded David emotion-ally and kept him from his destiny. However, instead of defending himself, he turned away from his brother and went on to slay Goliath.

A key focus of Out of Zion is to challenge replace-ment theology. “Replacement theology is the belief God has rejected Israel, and the promises to Israel now belong exclusively to the Church,” said Cantor. Accordingly, an episode entitled “Replacement Theology” was broadcast from the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. In this episode, Cantor explains it was the non-Jewish believers of ancient Rome who first ascribed to the notion the Church is the “new Israel.” This, then, is why, in his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul emphasized God’s continued calling on the Jewish people, (Romans 10–11). The idea for Out of Zion came from Ward Simpson, God TV's newly appointed CEO. Discussing his vision for the show, Simpson said, “God TV is passionate about Israel.” Everything we do is centered around Israel. We are broad-casting our network to over 200 million homes globally from there. It is a working out of Yeshua's prophetic words, “You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth,” (Acts 1: 8). “As part of our effort to teach and show the world about God's Holy Land we decided to launch a locally produced segment which would highlight the land of Israel while teaching our viewers what the word says about her,” he said. Having decided to produce the show, Simpson needed the right presenter. “We wanted a person on the ground who was knowledgeable, likable, trustworthy and capable to film more than 30 programs per shoot,” he said, “My dearest friend, Ron Cantor, was the only man who came to mind. I had full confidence in him that he would meet all our criteria. Then, what began as an idea, came to fru-ition in a matter of weeks. Only God could have done it, and to Him, we are truly grateful.” While Out of Zion is aired on God TV, the program is freely available on the Internet for those who don't have television. With new episodes posted daily on the Face-book pages of both Ron Cantor and God TV, the show has attracted 2,000 to 5,000 views a day. Explaining the significance of the program's accessi-bility on the Internet, Cantor first recalls going to Africa to share the Gospel. “We did several campaigns in Africa and saw miracles of all kinds as we, a team from Israel, came to them from out of Zion with the Good News of Yeshua,” he said. “Africa is in the cross hairs of Islam. The Islamists are doing everything necessary to create converts, and we

need to combat that. One way we can do this is through the Internet. You can go to the outskirts of Nigeria and find people who have next to nothing—but will most likely have a smartphone. By sharing programs like Out of Zion on the internet, we can offer people in difficult places solid teaching that will encourage them and build their faith.” He said, “Many people around the world love Yeshua and Israel, and they want to see where the Lord walked. I take it for granted that I can get in my car and drive to Jerusalem, but many will most likely never make the trip. We want to bring Israel to them.” With the first cycle of filming completed, the next one underway and future episodes envisioned, Out of Zion is set to continue to encourage, teach and bring the Word of God alive from Israel. The Messianic Times Statement of FaithWe believe…

…the Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures) and the B’rit Hadashah (New Covenant) are the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God.

…that there is one God (echad), who exists eternally in the “Trinity” of God the Father, Yeshua the Messiah and Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit).

…in the deity of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection after three days, His ascension to the right hand of God the Father and His personal return in power and glory. Yeshua was Mashiach ben Yosef (Suffering Servant) and His second coming will be Mashiach ben David (ruling King) when He returns.

…regeneration by the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) is essential for salvation and the indwelling of the Ruach is necessary to live a godly life.

…in the resurrection of the saved and the lost. Those who receive salvation through Yeshua will live forever with God; those who reject Him will know eternal separation from God, as the Scriptures describe.

enough time in our relationship with God, and for the Body of Messiah to more boldly shine His Light in this dark world it will require intensifying our walk with Him. Second, actively take part in ministry causes that are available to you. Join your home congregation in the weekly prayer gathering, take part in the food drive and help feed the hungry, consider joining a prison ministry, step outside your comfort zone and get directly and actively involved in the Kingdom work that is at hand. Far too many of us, as believers, are guilty of leaving the work of the Great Commission to others… We are more than cozy in popping into our Messianic Synagogue or church once a week for services, but that’s about all we’re willing to invest. But, each of us in whom the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) dwells are uniquely blessed with specific gifts and talents that the Lord has created us to use for the furthering of His Kingdom. Which means, there are ministry opportunities that only we can fill, and how much more effective will those endeavors be with all the right pieces in all the right places? Third, financially give sacrificially. This is perhaps one of the most difficult. It takes a

InThisIssueAs yet another year turns

and minds are focused on a clean slate for a fresh new year many will turn to the tradition of a New Year’s Resolution. These often are some grandiose desire for something we’d like to change in our lives, that sadly rarely last beyond January 31st: quitting a bad habit, losing a little weight, spending less energy of things of inconsequential importance, or any plethora of imaginable options. However, there’s something to the mental process behind the drive to make a resolution, the new year brings about a fresh, clean slate, another 365 days to be better than we were the year prior. I am sure there are just as many, if not more, arguments against the act of making a New Year’s resolution as there are affirming it. I’ve heard all sorts of things from “why start something you know you’ll not stick to,” to “the Bible says to avoid vows and oaths, let your yes be yes,” to “oh, that’s just some worldly creation for the purpose of vanity…” What’s funny is, as humans, we have an uncanny super-power to project our own failures or shortcomings into everyone else’s lives, whether we intend to or not, and most assuredly without even realizing we are during it most of the time. We know we might fail, so we

make excuses for why we don’t try to better ourselves or the world around us, then try to get everyone around us to jump on our pity train. However, as the year 2017 has all too swiftly approached, I’d like to make a challenge to our readers. I would like to challenge each and every one of us to take this new year as a fresh opportunity for us as believers to make an impact in the world around us. This isn’t some ethereal concept that cannot be attained, in fact, it is one of which our Messiah has strongly encouraged and, even moreso, entirely empowered us to do. If you’re considering making a New Year’s resolution this year, may be so bold to express a few possibilities that will most assuredly be in the right direction? First, as believers, I think the most important is a return or a deepening in our relationship with the Lord. This begins with devotion, a devotion to His Word, making the Bible the foundation for our day, and a devotion to prayer, our means of intentional communing with our Heavenly Father. I think the reality is that any one of us, if we’re being honest, can say with minimal thought involved that we likely do not invest

special depth of faith to step out and give of our finances into the work of the Lord, especially when things are tight in the budget as it is, and for so many in these days financial burden is not just a problem, it has become a way of life. But, the Bible is very clear that everything we have is from the Lord and I believe wholeheartedly that if we sacrificially give to the work of the Lord that He will bless in return. It isn’t a question of, “can I afford to give?” Instead, the question is, “Can I afford NOT to give?” Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not a prosperity gospel statement I am making, this is no get rich quick scheme. I’m not promising you that you are going to get crazy rich overnight if you give a little extra money. But, I am saying that the Bible is clear that the Lord will bless those who are feeding into His Kingdom. In regard to the latter two options, I would like to suggest your consideration of the Messianic Times. We are a ministry which has been in existence for over 25 years spreading news of the work the Messianic Jewish movement is involved in around the world. If you would be interested in taking part in our ministry one

excellent option is write for us. If this would be something you’d like to pursue, contact us at [email protected]. But, most importantly, prayerfully consider giving financially into this ministry. Whether it is a one time contribution or a regular, recurring donation, every single dollar is vital to the work we do, and we’d be honored for you to join forces with us in this new year. Our staff at the MT are ecstatic for what the Lord has in store for us in this new year. For those who have supported this ministry over the years, we are so thankfully for each and every one of you. All of our viewers and subscribers are so important to us and we thank you for standing by our side and allowing us to be the voice of the modern day Messianic Jewish movement for the greater Body of Messiah.

Serving Up the Gospel, One Beverage at a Time by Aaron Abramson

There is a constant bombardment for a person’s attention in New

York City. Art, cuisine, fashion and activism, New York is also home to nearly 100,000 charitable organiza-tions. A person walking along the street is accosted by billboards and other signage about what to buy, how to vote, what to watch, and who to be. Not to mention phone, tablet and computer screens. Forty-three years ago, life was simpler. Jews for Jesus was a fledgling band of Vietnam War protesters—young, unafraid and convinced Jesus was their Jewish Messiah—and they spread the message through humor-ous, hand-drawn gospel tracts. Over the years, millions were given out in busy subway stations and street cor-ners around the city. Jewish people came to believe in the Messiah. We were ubiquitous, bold and persistent. As years passed, heads bowed to phone screens and ears were plugged with headphones. There was a per-ceptible decline in effectiveness as we revisited those same subway stations. After years of striking a nerve within the Jewish community, it was clear we were being avoided by the major-ity of Jewish New Yorkers. Over the years, anti-missionary groups made the rounds in synagogues and Jewish community centers. They spread the idea Jews for Jesus were imposters, a cult. We desperately wanted to re-en-gage our people but how do you change perceptions when you can’t even maintain eye contact? We needed to understand these perceptions and find a new approach. After I began leading the New York branch of Jews for Jesus in 2011, I took a class on strategic communi-cations for nonprofit management. One day after class, I got into a con-versation with the professor about Jews for Jesus, and she said our brand had the most negative associations in the Jewish community. When I asked her why she said, “Aaron, I grew up in New York in a non-religious Jewish family, and I would say, ‘Jesus doesn’t bother me. But why do you always have to be in my way when I’m trying to get somewhere?’” The gospel is naturally offensive, especially to Jewish people. But we want to avoid more obstacles on the way to truth. The message of Jesus aside, we were violating the cardinal sin of New York: to hinder the com-mute during the busiest times of the day. So we began praying and ask-ing ourselves a series of questions around our audience, message, tone and methods. We didn’t want to sac-rifice high visibility or commitment to boldly sharing the truth, but we recognized what worked yesterday may not work today. The gospel is sacred, not methodology. We start-ed experimenting with new ways to bless New Yorkers and engage with them meaningfully, not only to cre-ate positive impressions but to cause

people to stop and ask why we were out there. We began giving little things away. For Rosh Hashanah, we gave out apple-flavored honey sticks and a card with a holiday message in-cluding our contact information. During the warm summer months, we labeled water bottles with a way to get in touch and handed them to parched passersby. Sunscreen, sun-glasses, glow sticks—whatever the item we distributed, we used it for further engagement. But perhaps the most influential giveaway has been our cold brew cof-fee. We began labeling cups with con-tact information, a short message, and a ‘Brews for Jesus’ logo, which plays off of our already identifiable name and causes quite a few smirks. We set up our cold brew coffee and iced tea stations in busier areas and on college campuses, this time not to get in the way, but to aid in the commute. Both the branding and the fact it’s us catches people so off guard many turn to social media to post photos of the encounter (see right). Students have called out, “You’re a lifesaver!” as they grab a cup of coffee on their way to class. One woman took a cup and passed it to her Jewish father, who is now in a retirement home, thinking he might find it interesting. She asked if somebody might be willing to visit her father to talk a little bit more about Jesus. Stewart, one of our local staff, visited him and over time, led him to faith in Jesus. Since then, a number of other friends have also asked to meet with Stewart. It began with a cup of coffee. But we wanted to offer people more than coffee; we wanted to give them hope. We started making boards in New York City and abroad that read “Post a Prayer” to help peo-ple through personal struggles and in moments of crisis. Jewish people from Israel and around the world have been attracted and posted a prayer. Often, we are able to pray for them on the street corner. To engage in deeper conversations, we began setting up boards embla-zoned with intriguing questions. We handed out sticky notes and markers, inviting passersby to post responses on the board. One of our boards reads, “What are you for?” and challenges people to define themselves in a pos-itive way, rather than by what they are against. Regardless of the question, the format frequently leads to deeper con-versations about faith and enables us to discuss just who Jesus is. As we try to bring change to our city, we realize that we ourselves must be open to changing our methods and experimenting with new ways to reach Jewish people at all levels of spiritual interest. We know it’s ulti-mately God’s work to save people, but we strive to be effective vessels through which He can work, “in order that we may win some,” (1 Corinthians 9:22). MT

Abraham Lincoln said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in those years.” If he

could have met Karen Meissner somewhere, somehow, it is possible that she would have been his favorite writer, producer, editor and over-protective Jewish mother. She would have proofread all his speeches until they reached “sizzle factor” status, bringing out her red pen, circling all his errors to make his piece would shine. Had Lincoln actually met her, he may have been as impressed with her as so many others were during her short, but astonishing life. Although Karen wasn’t born until 1951, long after Mr. Lincoln had passed, for this generation, her gram-matical skill from as early as the sixth grade earned her a reputation in a multitude of career fields that stretched over three decades.

The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Harry and Ruth Meissner, she was exposed to many languages spoken by her German parents. She quickly learned such a multilingual home would open incredible doors of communication, empowering her deep appreciation of international culture, customs and traditions. This acquisition at a young age became part of the building blocks on which her already budding adroitness would be built. Her mother, Ruth, remembers her daughter as a “delightful child,” one who was extremely intelligent, a good writer and who loved to put on shows with her cousins for their family. “She had hard times in her childhood,” said Ruth, but when the family moved from their crowded apartment in Queens, New York, to a house they built on Long Island, Karen’s interests expanded even further. Her mother recalls, “She made a curvy path from the house to the street all by herself. She worked on it for days until it was just right.” Besides her sudden interest in gardening, Karen was also fond of dancing, taking lessons from age three until junior high school. She loved to act. She loved music, with Broadway tunes being her favorite. But mostly, she loved the written word in all its methodical glory.

In 1980, Karen moved to Los Angeles, employed by Metro Media Producers Corporation in the post-production department. Before that, she traveled abroad and settled in France for a year, learning to speak French fluently. Subsequent employment with Orion Pictures, Jaffe Productions and the Scripps Network afforded her the opportunity to hone her skills, bringing many popular shows to television and the silver screen. At Jaffe Productions, she became hooked on writing non-fiction specials and documentaries and co-wrote, “Intimate Portrait: Grace Kelly” for Lifetime Television, “Rivals” for the Discovery Channel, A&E’s “Biography,” award-winning, “Modern Marvels” and the “Monuments To Freedom” series, which received a Golden Apple Award, to name a few. She even helped bring many popular films to fruition such as “Terminator” as she provided detailed story synopses for Orion Pictures story department.

She hit it off with Lesa Jaffe while working for Jaffe Productions, inaugurating what would become a lifelong friendship. “We went to the gym and afterward hit the Good Earth restaurant,” Jaffe cites, “We even dyed our eyelashes together.” It was during her position there happy-go-lucky Karen was introduced to the most significant person she would ever meet, thanks to Jaffe and others, at The Church On The Way in Van Nuys, CA, and Ahavat Tzion Messianic Synagogue in Beverly Hills. As inquisitive as ever, Karen discovered her Messiah, Yeshua, to the chagrin of her Jewish boyfriend, who promptly kicked her out when she declared her newfound faith. This was just the beginning of a journey that would see her travel through times of success as well as some severe challenges—facing both head-on, with courage, unending stamina, contagious humor and a never wavering allegiance to the Savior she had come to know and love.

The Quintessential Sizzle of Karen Meissnerby Corry Bell

After the tragic events of 9/11, Karen set out on her own on a freelance basis. Her bio includes a self-assessment; “Documentary writing requires an economy of words, a skill in itself. Writing for film or television presents a different challenge. Whether its refining dialogue, creating more believable characters, helping the narration flow more smoothly, or polishing any text, I can do it.” This confidence would carry her into her next role as the Managing Editor of The Messianic Times in 2008, a position she held for 5 ½ years. One of her protégées, Gail Levin, reminisces about the managing style Karen perfected. “Her pen was her scalpel,” she said. “Karen brought out the best in her writers, and in doing so, she brought out the best in the Messianic movement.”

“I think Karen put The Messianic Times on the map,” said her mom. “She ran all her ideas by me.” Quality work certainly her hallmark during her tenure where she gained the respect and admiration of all who labored under her. “Working alongside her, and being her friend, was a privilege; I will miss her,” Levin said. She goes on to say, “Karen’s editing and writing gave Messianic Judaism substance and credibility. Self-effacing, she made everybody else look good. She pulled those of us blessed to work with her to higher levels of journalistic integrity and craft—we are her legacy.”

In August 1983, Karen met and fell in love with Rabbi Shmuel Oppenheim. They married in July of 1984 and settled in El Paso, Texas, where Shmuel was leading a congregation. Tragically, trouble in the marriage began early on and the couple divorced in 1992. The parting was acrimonious for the first ten years until one day Karen took the initiative and phoned Shmuel, asking for his forgiveness. “She was a better witness than me,” explains Shmuel. “She opened the door for me to take responsibility for the dissolution of our marriage.” He said there were deep regrets on both their parts, but Karen’s moxie was an inspiration to him and helped them to go on to develop a profound closeness that would endure. Karen would declare that they were best

of friends and frequently say Shmuel was still the love of her life. “She never lost her sense of humor,” proclaims Shmuel, “And her faith never faltered. She was a good woman whom I will always miss.”

With all her professional accomplishments, there was a private side to Karen that drew people to her through her humor, her mollycoddling and a fun-loving, good nature. Her son, Levi Oppenheim, affectionately refers to his mom as the quintessential, over-protective Jewish mother.

“When I was little, whenever I would go anywhere she would say, ‘Put on your jacket. I’m cold!’” said Levi. “She always knew when I was up to no good, and I felt it. I knew she knew.”

Her love of books instilled an appreciation in Levi when she would read aloud to her little boy, making the characters come alive with voices and inflections to hold his interest. “I would send her emails, purposely riddled with grammatical errors, and she would send them back to me with corrections,” he said.

Karen’s role as a mother never ceased to be the focal point of her life. On January 28, 2015, she suffered a double hemorrhagic stroke, narrowly escaping death, but leaving her severely disabled. It was during those dark and tenuous days the love of mother and son would shine most brightly. Levi became his mother’s greatest advocate, traveling weekly from Las Vegas to Los Angeles where Karen existed on feeding tubes, breathing apparatuses, therapy and a whole lot of love and support from staff, family and friends. When asked why Levi chose to allow intubation (there was no advance directive for Karen on file), he simply said, “She was my mom. There was really no decision there. I wanted everything for her.”

Karen was left bedridden with paralysis on her left side, but this never stopped her from allowing God to use her to affect many lives. She never lost her wit and her light never went out, even as the Lord placed her among the many stars in Heaven on November 25, 2016, where she will always shine brightly and where her story demonstrates the quintessential sizzle factor, perfected. MessianicYouthTestimony

Icame out of the womb a Messianic Jew. Not really, but my parents both accepted Yeshua before they

got married, and my siblings and I have attended Congregation Beth Hallel our whole lives. When I was about three years old, I remember running into my parents’ room screaming, “Mommy, Mommy! I want to accept Yeshua into my heart.” I was ready, and that’s where my journey began. Since I was young, I do not remember the complete transformation which a lot of people experience when they are older, but I loved God and wanted Yeshua in my heart. As far back as I can remember, I have tried my best to follow Yeshua. In the third grade, I attended Fellowship Christian School. I began in kindergarten and graduated 12th grade. I had amazing teachers, but my third-grade teacher was extra special. She shared with us how im-portant it was to know God personally through a per-sonal relationship with Yeshua, and some people in the class invited Yeshua into their hearts that day. I was a little confused, because though I knew I had, I was a little worried I needed to invite Him in again, just to make sure. My teacher told me one time is enough for God, but encouraged me to rededicate my life to Him if I wanted to do so. I was not sure what that meant, but God graciously showed me. A few days later, I felt the Holy Spirit draw me outside into my backyard. It was this tug I could not control, even at nine years old. I felt God’s presence surrounding me, and I sat in awe, marveling at His cre-ation. It was at this time in my life I rededicated my life to the Lord. At this special moment, I honestly felt the Holy Spirit in a real and powerful way. Looking back, it’s hard to imagine I had such a strong encounter with God at such an early age, but it was real, and I am reminded God tells us to come to Him as a child. I came to Him as a child at three, and then at nine I had a meaningful, personal experience with Him. God has always been a strong part of my life, and I have never known a time without Him. I have been in an en-vironment at school with believers since kindergarten, and it’s been a blessing to be surrounded by teachers and students who love the Lord. While most of my extended family does not know Yeshua (yet), my imme-diate family is strong in the Lord, and I am very grateful. I am beyond blessed to have a mom and a dad still so in love after almost 25 years of marriage and three siblings who bring much joy to me. I am nineteen years old, and I am on the volleyball team at Truett McConnell University in North Georgia. I have attended Congregation Beth Hallel in Roswell, Georgia my whole life. The leadership at Beth Hallel is phenomenal, and I can honestly say I would not be the person I am today if it were not for my youth leaders, Marc and Dara Vidito, as well as my incredible rabbi, Kevin Solomon. Dara has mentored me and helped me grow in the Lord in unimaginable ways. The “Temple Teens” have had a huge impact on my life, and I absolutely love being surrounded by godly, supportive family and friends. God has used my relationships to help me grow and learn. He has also shown me amazing things I would like to share. Last summer, my main highlight was the YMJA Experience Israel Trip 2016. It was a life-changing expe-rience, and I highly recommend it to those who may be considering going when it’s offered. You will never be the same. I've always loved being Jewish and embracing my identity, and this trip helped solidify my Messianic Jewish identity. Messiah Conferences are always the highlight of the summer. The Messiah Conference is a week I look forward to all year long, and each year my expectations are exceeded. It’s a time where my peers shine in such a beautiful way and give of themselves through worship,

Rebekah Mann: God+Family+Friends=JOY!

teachings, dance and more. We have so many great lead-ers in the Messianic movement, but there is definitely something special about being led by my peers. Specif-ically, during the Messiah Conference 2014 YMJA night, the theme was centered around generations uniting together. As the service was winding down, I was sur-rounded by pure, beautiful worship, and I could sense the Holy Spirit strongly in the room. I felt God telling me to go pray for older women sitting by themselves. I prayed for a couple of women and felt the strength of the Lord on me as I followed Him in obedience. There was one lady in particular who God used to have a lasting impact on me. When I saw her, I looked into her deep, blue eyes and could visibly see the joy of Lord and pure love in her. I prayed for her, and she prayed for me. She then spoke six words I will never forget, “I will see you in eternity.” As I shared already, I accepted Yeshua into my heart at three and rededicated my life to the Lord at nine, but from time to time, Satan has allowed doubts to creep into my mind causing me to question my salvation. At that moment every stupid doubt that had wandered into my heart melted away. I am so grateful God allowed this supernatural experi-ence in my life to give me greater assurance as to who I am in Him. Worship at Messiah Conference, at Beth Hallel, during Saturday Night Lights (a Temple Teen event) or even when I am alone, is an important part of my life. One of my greatest joys is giving all of myself to God

through worship. I do not consider myself a worship leader, but I love to worship God on the floor. I love worshiping Him fully—holding back absolutely nothing. It is during worship when I have my most intimate moments with God, and can hear His still small voice speak to my heart. We live in such a fast-paced world where it seems at one moment, we are on a mountain top, and then in the blink of an eye, tragedy strikes or trials come our way. Many of you reading this may think a 19 years is not a long time, but it’s all I have to share. A few take home messages I have learned over the years can be found in the following scrip-tures: “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:6) , “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) I have been through highs and lows in life, and the same people who brought me joy have also disappointed me, but one thing I know for sure is God is with me always, and His word confirms that for me. As I am finishing my first semester of college, I have recognized the importance of my close friends and family to help me through hard times. I am beyond blessed. The first scripture I ever memorized was Proverbs 3:5–6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your paths.” Life is a journey, and if I keep my eyes on Him, He will direct my steps and ultimately my paths. I am so grateful for what the Lord is doing in my life, and I hope this encourages you. MY

How Do You Spend…

One of the beautiful aspects of our Messianic community is we extend beyond borders and into different states and countries—and many different climates. As we celebrate the arrival of 2017, many of us are also mourning the departure of warm weather and days in the sun. We asked a variety of rabbis, youth and young adults, from sunny, southern Florida to the frozen tundra of New York and many places in between, to tell us how they’d spend a snowy day.

SURVEY DISCUSSION: "You're trapped in your house for a full day after a big blizzard. How do you spend your time?"

Jacob RogersSyracuse, NYInstead of asking me a

hypothetical question about

a blizzard, you could have just

asked, “What did you do today?”

There’s two feet of snow on my

back porch, and two days ago, it

was in the mid-sixties and sunny—

welcome to Syracuse.

The first thing I did was shovel,

and then I shoveled, and then I

shoveled, and then I shoveled

some more. I shoveled because my

snow blower wouldn’t start, and all

of my daughters were still sleeping.

Having your children shovel for

you helps build character, but my

daughters are already characters.

It’s very important to have a clear

a path to and from your house, so

when it stops snowing, you can

go to work, and you can get out in

case of an emergency, but more

importantly, so the delivery guy

can bring food. It doesn’t matter

if it’s pizza or Chinese; they both

still deliver, even when it gets

really bad because this qualifies

as “essential travel.” You want to

avoid driving at all costs, especially

if it is the first storm of the winter.

This is because of snow-nesia, a

highly scientific term that means

everyone loses their mind and

forgets how to drive in snow. This is

a temporary condition that will pass

with each additional snowfall.

The Internet has revolutionized

what we do on a snowy day. We

used to go outside to go sledding,

throw snowballs at each other,

try to get your younger brother

to lick the metal fence post in the

backyard and then come back in

and warm up with a cup of hot

cocoa. This has all been replaced,

done away with by WiFi. Instead

of the warm glow of the fireplace,

we now have the warm glow

of the tablet and smartphone.

We used to sit around and play

board games, but now we just

binge watch old episodes of

Seinfeld, The Goldbergs and, God

forbid, SpongeBob SquarePants.

Snowballs have been transformed

into posts, tweets, pins and snaps.

And that fence post in the back

yard? That is now a meme we

try to console ourselves with by

poking fun of those who get less

snow than we do. The wrapping

up in warm blankets and drinking

cocoa hasn’t changed, though.

How do we spend our time stuck in

the house after a big blizzard? We

do it together as a family.

Brian SamuelWesterly, RII’d be praying for the snow blower to

work. If so, I’d be removing the snow

off my driveway, (one of my least

favorite activities in the world). Aside

from that, I love spending some

quality time with my beloved Suzi.

And, yes, we would be singing songs

from Hamilton with each other.

Joe VitkusFort LauderdaleI haven't had to think about this

question for the last 34 years or so

as I'm living in sunny South Florida. I

do remember my days in Wisconsin,

when we experienced snowstorm

after snowstorm. Eventually, the

police came to my door on the

second-floor balcony and told me I

had 8 hours to shovel the walkway

between my house and the highway.

It was literally packed up to the

point I saw students walking by my

windows...on the second floor. They

built steps up and steps down—

however, if anyone fell off the snow

ledge, there was no way out except

onto highway traffic.

The reason I left Wisconsin, in 1981,

was the record temperature being 31

degrees below zero; it was about 70

below with the wind chill factor off

Lake Michigan. They closed down

the city, but I just had to find out

what that felt like, right? I stuck my

head out the door and came right

back in, cracking my nose hairs

because they had frozen in five

seconds. Brrrr. I said to myself, "I'm

moving to Florida." The next year, I

did just that.

I don't really mind the snow

when I go to visit. I don't care to

live there or drive in the snow.

I think I would make some hot

chocolate, watch a good movie

or two and just enjoy my wife’s

company. Oh, and the reason I will

never move back to Wisconsin? I

can't find golf balls in the snow.

Aybars HanSeattle, WAAsleep. Asleep, asleep asleep

asleep more being asleep, and

then some more sleeping. Eat.

Then more being asleep. Waking

up, maybe eating again, and then

being more asleep than before.

Just kidding. Sort of. MT

Jonathan Rutter,

Buffalo, NYBeing from the frozen wastelands of

Buffalo, New York, you might say I

have some experience on the topic

of blizzards and what to do during

them. If I were currently trapped in

my house by a blizzard, today, you

would most likely find me paging

through a dense and relatively

stuffy book about medieval history,

because school leaves me with too

many of those to read, and too few

hours to do so. But if I had a choice,

I would be doing something very

different.

You might say that “being with

family” is a predictable answer

to this question, and you would

be right. But I do not think it’s

necessarily a bad thing. Far too

often, I let things like dense and

stuffy books about medieval

history—things on the grander

scale are eminently unimportant—

take all my time away from things I

really want to do, first and foremost,

being my family and friends. And

what better opportunity is there

to spend quality time with them

than when you’re stuck together

in a blizzard. We could play board

games. We could play or listen

to music together. We could

collectively contemplate how

pleasant it will be to breathe fresh

air when the blizzard comes to an

end. But my choice would be to

weather the storm with those I care

about. They’re more important than

medieval history books.

Alexa WoockTampa, FLI would watch TV, (Phineas and

Ferb, My Little Pony or a movie

with my sister) or play some video

games on my Wii (Mario Kart or Wii

Sports). I would layer my clothes to

be warm and have a blanket with

me at all times. I would stare out

my window looking at all the snow

until I got bored. I would play and

cuddle with my pets (my two dogs,

Shiloh and Kobi, my kitten, Neo, and

my rabbit, Jasper) whom I love so

much. I would spend time with God

and in His Word and listen to some

music: worship, Adele, Tori Kelly,

Jack Johnson or 60s-80s music. I

would eat a lot of food, specifically

ice cream, cookies, s'mores made

in the microwave, anything sweet,

really. I would maybe read some

of a book I haven't yet finished.

Sadly, I would probably stare at my

phone for a while, texting friends or

on Facebook. If I got really bored, I

might clean my room...or my house.

I would hang out with my sister

in her room, talking and laughing

about random stuff. And lastly, if

I had nothing else to do...I would

sleep.

Caleb GoldbergLakeland, FLI would probably begin my day

by writing a song similar to the

one I made a few years ago called

“17-Hour Power Outage,” which

went to the tune of “The 12 Days of

Christmas.” Then I would eat some

cereal for breakfast while snapping

and posting about the blizzard.

Before hanging out with my family,

I would begin cooking some mac

and cheese in a Crock Pot. Since I

have four siblings, I often have many

options of ways to spend my time.

Scrabble is my sister Asha’s favorite

board game, and I would play a

game with her. Then, I may play

Twister with my twin sisters, and

most likely give up after about thirty

minutes of no one winning. Next,

I would try to get everyone in the

family to play some group games,

such as Fishbowl or Taboo. The last

game I would probably play is hide-

and-seek because it always reminds

me of The Chronicles of Narnia: The

Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

After playing games, I would

spend time with my brother, Ravi,

by discussing random topics and

watching YouTube clips of Saturday

Night Live and Stephen Colbert

while I make him food. Next, I

would watch a movie or TV show,

most likely Zootopia, as I have been

waiting to see it for several months.

Afterward, I would FaceTime my

“second families,” the Manns and the

Ashbys, while I made s’mores in the

oven. Then, if I were feeling creative

enough, I would choreograph

a dance or make a short movie

directed by Ravi. It would be based

off a not-so-well-known Bible story,

such as the one we recorded five

years ago called Melodramatic Story

of Perez-Uza (1 Chronicles 13:5–12).

Lastly, my family would probably

end the day by all meeting together

in the family room. My sister Reva

would convince my parents to let

her start a fire in the fireplace. My

sister Asha would ask if we could

sing some worship songs. Then my

mom would have us read the Bible,

and our dad would pray over each

of us. We would finish our time

together by watching a movie. My

mom would fall asleep during the

movie, and when I wake her up, she

would have me massage her hands

and feet.

Shayna RosenfarbNorfolk, VAI would be able to relax and just

enjoy the day off. I could sit in front

of our fireplace with a cup of coffee,

and a good book to get lost in, or

catch up on episodes of “Sherlock.”

I’m sure I would find time to get a

little bit of piano playing in as well. If

my fiancé happened to be trapped

(with my family there of course) at

the house as well, we would most

likely be found working on wedding

details, and scrapbooking while

watching old episodes of “Dick Van

Dyke” or “I Love Lucy.” I am sure my

family would cook up all sorts of

yummy treats to eat while we were

stuck in the house. We could sit

down, and watch a movie together.

A day trapped at home would fill up

pretty quickly, but it would be a day

I would cherish forever. MY

Believers look forward to the prophetic day when all Israel will be saved, and

Shaul’s “one new man” is a reality for every Jew and Gentile. Messianics living in Israel, as members of ish believers to help build the Kingdom in Israel?”

To fill this need, together with Ron Arnow in 2014, they founded the Bless Israel NetworkHimself one new man from the two groups . . . ” Our “Messiah is using the Bless Israel Network to bridge that breach and bring them together.” MT

Each year The Messianic Times organizes a tour to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel, the Holy Land, and people from varying backgrounds and worship styles converge to participate. At first they are mostly strangers, but by the end of the trip they are like family. This year the MT tour pulled together a group of 30 individuals from Pensacola, Florida and Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia for an experience that would change their faith lives forever.

The impact it can have on a believer’s life—walking through a Land that holds thousands of years of Biblical history— is delightfully contrasted by the vibrant, modern Jewish state whose contributions in technology and humanitarian impact are unparalleled in its region and admired around the world. Whether it is walking through the streets of a modern city like Tel Aviv or taking in Tel Shiloh where the Tabernacle stood, or walking the streets of the resurrected and restored Holy City of Jerusalem and praying at the Kotel (Western Wall), Israel is a place where past and present collide with the promise of future beyond one’s wildest dreams.

Here are some of the comments from this year's participants.

“My recent trip to Israel with The Messianic Times was a wonderful experience on multiple levels. In addition to the historical and archeological places we visited, I learned a lot about Jewish culture and traditions, past and present. And understanding Jewish culture and traditions makes me feel closer to our Savior, and because of that, it was priceless!

—Leslie Gordon

“I have just returned from the Messianic Times 2016 tour of Israel. Let me assure you that the experience was astounding on many levels. Rabbi taught and explained so many inter-esting Biblical facts, which one would have never otherwise understood. To experience the Holy Land from the viewpoint of Messianic believers, who meticulously study the Bible and expound on the uniquely Jewish perspective of this amazing place, is priceless.

“From Tel Aviv, to the Golan, to the Galilee, to Caesarea Philippi, to the Dead Sea, to Masada in the Negev, Israel is majestic, and diverse in culture and landscape. It is breathtaking in its beauty. The people were warm and welcoming, the food incredible! This Holy Land is a place of awe and wonder. Israel is truly a must see destination year after year.”

—Leah S

"Our trip was life changing and will stay with me forever."—Jill Wilburn Harper

“We travelled to Israel to learn about its history and future. The tour was a real eye opener! We now have a greater appreciation of the world-wide challenges of Israel. Our tour leaders were great! They kept us busy visiting the sites and learning their significance. Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee were inspiring. These areas are where Yeshua ministered the most. The hotels and food were excellent. We felt safe everywhere we went. We are planning to go again.”

“I haven’t been able to get this trip out of my mind and I know it’s in my heart forever. I am so, so grateful for Rabbi Eric and Pammy (and Paster Scott and Tammy). Rabbi Eric and Pammy were just the ‘icing on the cake.’ You brought so much extra understanding and knowledge and you communicate in such a way that I get it...and it’s logical. I am so grateful y’all choose to take a group to Israel as often as you do. The two of you are a blessing to me and my life, and I am so grateful I had the oppor-tunity to experience this trip with y’all. Pammy sings like an angel.”

“After spending my life reading and studying about the giants of our faith, I was finally able to truly see what they saw and walk where they walked. My life will never be the same. “After gazing across the beautiful landscape of Israel, I now know why stoning was the preferred mode of capital punishment. “I thought that this trip to Israel was going to be infor-mative, little did I expect to find myself connected to the greater story. In a moment, I was drawn in by a people and culture that still fights for everyday survival. God continues to write this grand beautiful narrative which is unfolding right before our very eyes.”

“It was a trip that my daughter and I will always remember as one where we made new friends and grew in our knowledge of Israel and her people. Now, as I sit down each morning

MessianicArtSceneAdding Faith to Illustrative Art Career by Catherine Currier

4Continued on the following page

Setbacks are a common occurence for any art-ist striving to succeed in the artworld. As soon

as things take off, something pops up unexpect-edly and hinders progress. There are two ways to respond when this happens: give up or keep on.

For young Messianic artist Dara Lewis, the phrase “giving up” does not exist in her vocabulary. Throughout her life, one of strict military upbringing, homeschooling, (along with four siblings) she has overcome more than one obstacle daring to impede on her artistic career. A typical criticism, Lewis said, toward young, sprouting artists is an art career is not lucrative and a waste of time. “I was constantly being told that art was a useless venture and that the visual arts were dead,” she said. After a miserable year of forced business school, she switched her degree track. Just a year into nursing, she experienced major roadblocks. Dissected cats soaked in formaldehyde in the Anatomy and Physiology lab were left out near her station, and the exposure caused her to have seizures. The economic recession of 2008 forced her business to close. While dealing with health issues and a lost business, Lewis said there were only two things which helped her cope taking care of Delilah, her horse and creating art.

Growing up by the wheat fields of northeast North Dakota, at 10 years old, she said she would ride her bike to the local stables and shovel stalls in exchange for riding lessons until she was 14. At 16, she was training horses and then purchased her own for exhibitions, she said. A rescue horse, Delilah came with some instability, but Lewis said she still takes care of her. Horses and dragons were the main subject matter for her art before she began to branch out and focus on particular themes.

Lewis pursued her dream of art after recovering from treatments and attended the University at Buffalo SUNY (State University of New York). She graduated in three years Magna Cum Laude. Her experience was not a walk in the park. Being the only follower of Yeshua in her courses, Lewis said she often faced mockery and negative criticism because of her beliefs and her artistic style. “I was told that biblical art would not make me an artist, and it will only waste my time. They were only half right, though,” she said. “To be an artist these days, only catering to the evangelical community is not enough,” she said. Lewis is currently working on projects for both the secular and believing worlds.

Her Yom HaShoah collection displays 19 pieces that disclose a message of good stemming from bad and second chances. Many of the

pieces present darkness paired with light. Lewis said, “As my first solo show, I want to bring in a message of hope to the Jewish community and create a rapport with the arts community as paying attention to important Jewish issues.” As a Messianic artist, she claims it is her responsibility to connect with both the believing and Jewish districts where she lives.

But even that doesn’t seem to be sufficient. Where she currently lives with her husband, Nick, in Indianapolis, Indiana, she said she is constantly being dismissed because of her illustrative style, which, according to the local artists, is not very popular in their contemporary-minded community. “Ironically, however, the largest museums and art centers in New York City are bringing in detailed, illustrative and abstract pieces from Europe, much like mine, because they’ve seen dramatic drops in attendance when they exhibit contemporary pieces,” she said.

As a child attending local churches with her parents, Lewis remembers wondering why pastors would avoid certain books and passages of the Old Testament. She said she often got into trouble for questioning. When she turned 18, she and her family were exiled from their church when the pastor’s wife discovered their Jewish heritage. “I came to believe in Yeshua when I was six years old. That’s when God’s Word sprung to life for me,” she said. After leaving the church, Lewis

frequented a conservative synagogue until her brother located a Messianic synagogue nearby. “I didn’t even know Messianic Judaism existed,” she said. She and Nick now attend Sha’arey Yeshua in Indianapolis, IN. “I would say my relationship with God is a close one—I gain inspiration by abiding in Him on a daily basis, and I always seek His blessing before starting a new project,” she said. Her tenacity and passion, she believes, come directly from God, and He motivates her to keep trying and persist in her art.

A project she is most proud of commenced after graduating from college. Her illustrations of the Tanakh emanate from a fresh, vibrant outlook on the stories cherished by millions. Beginning with “Beresheet,” or Genesis, she said she seeks to provide a fully-depicted account of the Hebrew Scriptures for the average adult reader. “There are already many children’s versions out there, and I know pictures help visual learners understand what they are reading better, especially with straightforward images that are also appealing to the eye,” she said. For this endeavor, she is using digital painting as well as finer media, such as watercolor and charcoal. Rather than the stories being separated into chapters and verses, she said the pictures would inform the viewer of where a story begins and ends while the text is added in around them. “Something I learned in my psychology classes is that stories are better remembered by the reader when they’re grouped individually,” Lewis said.

This will be a continuous undertaking, and she said she plans to create as many illustrations as are needed for each story in the Tanakh. Even though many things have somewhat slowed down its progress, she desires to keep it going as it was one of the first ideas she contrived that wasn’t random and incohesive. and this perpetual sketching of the Old Testament actually work together as a team. Lewis said, “I’ve always wanted the Tanakh project to be the only one, but I know in order to be accepted by those outside the believing community, I needed to not just be known as the ‘Bible artist.’” The Holocaust collection is still personal and relevant for Lewis, but it also satisfies a void. However, after that concludes, the pictures of the Tanakh will take precedence, and it will be shown as a whole compilation as well.

In addition to her fine art, Lewis also performs services for groups, congregations and organizations that need artistic assistance, such as custom logos, CD cover designs, greeting cards and murals. She’s completed patch designs for the Air Force, flyers for the Buffalo HR Dept, logos and t-shirts for B’rith Hadoshah in Buffalo, and a logo design for her husband’s company.

When asked if she could be anywhere in the world, she said, “Israel, hands down.” Lewis hopes to finally make aliyah after a previous failed attempt when health complications arose. She said, “God keeps reminding me there’s work here to be done, so Israel will have to wait for now. In the meantime, I just keep trusting in His perfect timing for everything.”MT

chodesh-yare’ach–levanahvbck-jrh—asuj

A tale of three moons

There are three widely used Hebrew words for “moon.” The first is chodesh—asuj—whose root is chadash—asj—meaning “new.” The association between “new” and “moon” is clear: a new moon is the sign of a new month. The name for this monthly observance is rosh chodesh—asj atr—“the head of the month.” The second word for moon is levanah—vbck—meaning “white,” since the moon so often appears to be white in the night sky. The third, yare’ach—jrh is the most often used word for moon. It can be read in the book of Exodus where Moses’ mother hid her infant from the Egyptians for shloshah yerachim—ohjrh vaka “three months.” It has transitioned nicely to modern Hebrew, where a monthly magazine is referred to as yarchon—ijrh.

Why are there so many words for “moon?” Possibly because the holy days in the biblical calendar are sometimes connected to different phases of the moon: Rosh Chodesh to celebrate the new moon, and certain festivals, like Sukkot, that begin at the middle of the month with a happy appearance of a full moon.

Bring Blessings (and Bagels) by Brooke Manolis

WomenAtTheForefront

When you first meet Ethel Chadwick, it doesn’t quite

matter how your day was going before, because it will be sure to brighten up from that point on. She simply brings blessing with her wherever she goes. Ethel has an infectious joy that she ex-udes wherever she goes. She is a strong woman of faith and has a boldness that makes her such an effective Kingdom worker and essential part of the Mes-sianic Movement. She attends Congregation Shema Yisrael led by Rabbi Jim Appel where she serves as Worship Director and coordinates the synagogue’s multiple worship teams. Ethel’s joyful personality is part of what each new visitor’s experiences. “She is the most outgoing person you could ever meet,” Rabbi Jim Appel said, “she’s the first person to greet new people and invite them to her home.” With a smile and a theatrical wave of her hand, she puts those she interacts with at ease because of the joy she car-ries. Her reputation as a blessing began with a Bible and a curious mind years ago. Born to a Jewish family in Richmond, Virginia, Ethel was very musical and used her talent specifically in choirs. While music was a big part of her life, she was always on a search for the mean-ing of life and found interest in astrology and numerology as part of that search. By her early 20s, she was living in Rochester, New York, and it was there that God began working on her heart by a Gentile co-worker, Doreen. Doreen read her Bible every day at lunch and had a picture of Yeshua on her desk. After a while, being the inquisitive woman she is, Ethel began to ask some ques-tions. Doreen very gently shared the gospel with Ethel and eventu-ally Ethel worked up the nerve to read the New Testament. “I was so shocked and amazed to see a genealogy from King David and to read the beautiful words of Ye-shua in the Beatitudes. I expected it to be anti-Semitic and found it to be a very Jewish book,” Ethel said. Doreen began to introduce Ethel to other Jewish Believers at work, and Ethel began to real-ize just how Jewish Yeshua, and believing in Him really is. So in July 1976, Ethel Chadwick invited Yeshua into her life and heart and became made new. “A lot of things happened in my life that challenged my faith, but I'm happy to say that God is faithful and lifted me up,” Ethel said of her relationship with the Lord. God truly has been faithful to Ethel and has used all of her many gifts in some very exciting ways. “Ethel is a perky, energet-ic, totally optimistic person,” said Rebbetzin Marlene Rosenberg.

Ethel has attended and helped with the Beth Zion Women’s re-treat, which Marlene coordinates for many years and has used her gifts to help bring women together in song. “It has been a delight to get to know her better through the Beth Zion Women's Retreat. She has been choir director, speaker and this year a creative activity presenter. She’s a blessing...not a bagel” Marlene cheerfully added. While some of the women in the Movement may know her as choir director for the retreat, many more in the Messianic Movement may know Ethel from her radio show Bagels and Blessings. On one hand, the opportunity was com-pletely God-ordained and came out of nowhere. On the other, it took some chutzpah and fantastic planning. One day Ethel was listening to the radio at work when the an-nouncer said that someone could win the opportunity to a one-hour show, one-time only. All partici-pants had to do was submit a tape, so she did. After submitting her tape, she received a call from the manager for an interview. “The first question I asked was ‘can i

play Messianic music on the air?’” Ethel said. She was told that she could do whatever she wanted in that one-hour span. She felt that the Lord gave her the name “Ba-gels and Blessings” right away; “after all, I'm Jewish, I love bagels and I want to be a blessing!” Ethel laughed. After this interview, she knew it was time to get to work on this show. She asked some-one to come on to the program to be a guest, and he would give his testimony about how he came to faith in Yeshua from a Jewish background. She chose opening and closing songs and went to a bagel shop and asked for a cou-pon, which she received with no questions asked! God was igniting a flame that, little did she know, would grow and spread in her life. Ethel’s one-time show was a total success! She took phone calls, planned a Bible quiz, and played lots of music during the show! The manager approached her about keeping the show going. After re-ceiving some supportive counsel from her rabbi, Jim Appel, she de-cided to go for it. That is how the show we know and love came to be! God opened wide all the doors

for financial support and listen-ership and blessed Ethel with the opportunity to share Yeshua on the radio waves! “I don't know how many people listen to the program, but a few people have discovered congregation She-ma Yisrael from listening to the broadcast, and they have become an active part of the congrega-tion,” Ethel shared. Since the beginning of Bagels and Blessings, Ethel has had the opportunity to interview many well-known and wonderful peo-ple in the Messianic Movement including Paul Wilbur, Marty Goetz, Joel Chernoff, Phil Klein, Beckah Shae, Ted Pearce, Corry Bell and Lev Shelo, Sue Samuel, Deborah Kline Iantorno,

Sally Klein O’Connor, plus many Messianic rabbis and authors. God has used this show and Ethel to be a channel of blessing to many. Bagels and Blessings is still going strong, and in addition to the show, Ethel is newly re-tired and enjoying it by tak-ing jazz and tap classes, sing-ing in a Community Chorus, teaching beginning piano, and auditing classes for at Mon-roe Community College. She also just filmed her very first commercial for Excellent Air, so who knows what God has in store for Ethel now, but it will for sure be exciting and a blessing to all. Ethel is blessed to have a God-fearing husband and three beautiful children. MT

Rabbi Tarfon used to say, “If you have studied much in the Torah, much reward will be given you for faithful is your employer who shall pay you the reward

of your labor. And know that the reward for the righteous shall be in the time to come,” (m.Avot 2:21) Sometimes we may wonder how our sages derive teachings such as this. Where do concepts like these stem from? Are they made up out of thin air or do they have some root in the Scriptures? First, the Scriptures are filled with the principle of reward and punishment. The righteous will be rewarded, and the wicked will suffer punishment. In our present case, the principle of reward is connected to the study of Torah. This may be derived from the proverb that states, “Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the word will be rewarded,” (Proverbs 13:13). According to this passage, a person who re-veres the Word—i.e. the Scriptures—will be rewarded. Therefore, to labor over the words of Torah is a means by which a person reverences the sacred text. The theme of labor and reward is also a frequent theme of the Apostolic Scriptures. Hebrews 11:6 says God “rewards those who seek him.” Yeshua often speaks in terms of reward for the faithfulness of his disciples. In Matthew 20, Yeshua tells the parable of the day laborers. In this parable the owner of the vineyard hires day laborers at different points throughout the day, presumably to help with the harvest. At the end of the day, he begins paying the laborers in the reverse order of their hiring. But rather paying out varying wages based on how long they had labored, they all receive an equal salary. As soon as he finishes, the ones who had worked the longest began to grumble about the laborers who had only worked a few hours had received a payment equal to their own. The vineyard owner reminds them he had hired them at a set wage and if he paid everyone equally it was not because he was miserly, but because he wanted to be generous to those who only worked a few hours. In this parable, the characters are day laborers in a vineyard. However, Yeshua did not intend for his teaching to be applied to manual labor. He was speaking of the reward of the righteous in the world to come, just as Rabbi Tarfon. He introduced the parable in classic form by saying, “For the kingdom of heaven is like …” (Matthew 20:1). And his conclusion was simply, “So the last will be first, and the first last” (Matthew 20:16). In other words, in the economy of the Kingdom of Heaven, things are not how we may expect. Yes, rewards will be paid out, but most likely in a manner which will not be immediately understood. The reward of the righteous who labor over the words of Torah may be a little different than we expect also.

In a commentary on Genesis 1:4, Rashi speaks about the first light of Creation that existed before Hashem created the luminaries and hung them in the heavens. When this light was spoken into existence and Hashem beheld its goodness, He immediately separated it from the darkness. Rashi explains this by saying:He saw that the wicked were unworthy of using it (the light); He, therefore, set it apart (kschu), reserving it for the righteous in the world to come. Rashi bases his comments on the midrash. According to two separate mid-rashim, this is indeed what happened to the Light of Creation: When He [God] saw the wicked,(who would live in the future) whose deeds are rotten, he stood and hid it, as it is said, “And from the wicked ones the light is withheld,” (Job 38:15). And for whom was it hidden? For the righteous in the World to Come, as it is said, “And God saw the light that it was good,” (Genesis 1:4). And there is no good other than the righteous, as it is said, “Say of the righ-teous, that they are good,” (Isaiah 3:10), and it is written, “Light is sown for the righteous,” (Psalms 97:11); (Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 4:4). Then where is it, the light of Creation? It is stored up for the righteous in the Messianic future, as it says (Isaiah 30:26), “Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of the seven days,” (Genesis Rabbah 3:6). The nature of the righteous is to study and apply the words of Torah, and the reward for the righteous—those who labor diligently over the Holy Writ—will be paid to them in the world to come. Will that reward be the bestowal of the Hidden Light of Creation stowed away since the beginning of time? We will never know until that day is upon us. But in the meantime we will toil over the words of Torah, praying that Hashem would make a new light shine upon Zion and that we all may soon be worthy of its light. MT

BradTV’s interview with Shapira was only the beginning. Ahavat Ammi pro-duces a video series called “Pearls of the Torah” which are released weekly, in which the Torah parsha is discussed in depth. Kim translates “Pearls of Torah” into Korean each week, and it is seen by many Korean Christians. So, even before the conference was ever announced there was a deep desire and burden for more, and Shapira was more than joyed to be able to take part in this unprecedented event for South Korea and the Messianic Jewish Movement. For many the question may be, “Why is a Messianic Jewish rabbi teaching in a conference in South Korea?” And the answer is simple, Ohr L’Goyim (Light unto the Nations) is one of the two key mandates of Ahavat Ammi Ministries. Shapira believes strongly that it isn’t just about sharing the Good News of Messi-ah Yeshua with the Jewish world, but as Paul says, “For I am not ashamed of the Good News, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who trusts—to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16 TLV) As the Messianic Jewish movement grows and its influence continues to blossom around the world, more and more of the nations are starting to catch the true vision of the being grafted into Israel. There is a hunger among the na-tions for sound and solid Messianic Jewish teaching. Shapira is answering

a strong call and burden on his heart to take the important teachings of the Jewish roots of the Body of Messiah to the Jew first and also to the gentile, and specifically to bring a correct under-standing of the roles of Jews and Gen-tiles in the Body and how both relate to the Word of God which was inspired by the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) in a Jewish context. Sadly, it is very easy, with just a simple internet connection, to access teachings and information from the “fringe” of the Messianic movement, some of which produces bad fruit. Much of this often leads to an over-zealousness for Torah, sometimes to the degradation of the gift of Salvation. Ahavat Ammi’s desire with events like this conference in Seoul is to bring a coherent and cohesive under-standing of the unity of Salvation and Torah so perspective is weighed properly. Expectations for the conference are very high, especially considering many Korean Christians are hungry for the teaching of Jewish roots and the Torah. Before the conference even began there were well over 400 people who had registered, and the final numbers were over 600 people who actually attended. A response from one of them was, “It was like a dream that we can listen to Rabbi Shapira’s teaching in person, in Korea. Our eyes are open by his teaching.”The host of this conference, Brad TV, was established two years ago, and it is focused on making programs concern-ing Israel, evangelizing Jewish people and the end times. Their programing have been watched by more than five million viewers from 198 different countries. As with much of the history of Christianity, South Korean Christi-anity has had a definitive influence of Replacement Theology and an aversion

to all things Jewish. However, as is being reported in countries all over the world, there is a revival occurring in which a hunger for the Jewish roots of the faith is rising. There is a realization bloom-ing that Biblical prophecy, including end time prophecy, revolves around and is centrally focused on Israel and the Jew-ish people. So, programming like that of BradTV is giving access to millions of Korean speakers to the sound Biblical teachings in this area. What makes this conference more special is that even the story of its lo-cation is a message of redemption. The facility in which the event was held is the P.C.K. Conference Center which is a property owned by one of the main conservative Christian denominations in South Korea. This denomination has been one that adheres to Replacement Theology, it was completely against the importance of the Torah in the Body of Messiah and has an aversion to end time teaching. Yet, here is a conference about Messianic Judaism being orchestrated and hosted by a Korean television min-istry with a heart for Israel and a desire to make known the vital role of the Jew-ish people in end time prophecy and the main teacher of the conference is a Mes-sianic Jewish rabbi who was born and raised in Israel. How about that for the power of God to be able to redeem and restore even the most drastic of differ-ences for the good and purposes of His Kingdom? Shapira said, “It is our honor and joy to bring the message in proper context to the people of Korea. The hunger that we have been witnessing is a sign of the revival of the last days.” Rabbi Shapira believes that there is a birthing of a powerful revival in South

America and Asia. In as much as the Western World is seeing a decline in the revival spirit that has been seen over the years, there is a clear rising of outpouring of the Ruach HaKodesh in the South America and Asia, and part of this is that there is a turning of the heart toward the Jewish people and Israel. There is much work to be done, this conference in Seoul, the confer-ences and events that Ahavat Ammi have been successful with in Colombia, France, Romania (which was in early December 2016) and in Rome, Italy (late December 2016) is a foundation being laid. It should also be viewed as a challenge to the rest of the Messianic Jewish Movement to be a part of the powerful work that God is doing among the nations to provoke the Jewish people to faith in Yeshua the promised Messiah of Israel. exploring namesin the scriptures

There were ten generations between Adam and Eve and Noah, sometimes called the TABLE OF THE NATIONS:

Adam (ost–“man”), Seth (,a–“granted”), Enos (aubt–“frail man”), Kenan (ibhe–“gotten” or “reed-like”),

Mahalalel (ktkkvn–“the blessed God”), Jared (srh–“rose” or “descending”), Enoch (lubj–“dedicated”),

Methuselah (lkau,n–“his death shall send judgment”), Lamech (lnk–“despair”) and Noah (jb–“rest”).

Enoch did not die, but was taken up to heaven.

These are thegenerationsfrom Adam to Noah…

SHEM is the word for name or renown. In the Scripture, the Shemites became the inhabitants of the Levant or the Middle East. From the Shemites comes the modern word Semites.

After the ood, NOAH became a planter of vineyards and a maker of wine. His three sons were given the mission to replenish the earth, and through them the population grew and spread throughout the known world.

HAM is the word for hot or heat or brown.was Noah’s youngest son. Among Ham’s sons were Canaan, Cush (Ethiopia) and Mitzrayim (Egypt).

JAPhETH means enlarged. Noah’s oldest son inhabited Eurasia. Among his ospring were Javan (Greece) and Madai (Persia).

“NOAH found favor in the eyes of the Lord” is one ofthe most cathartic verses of Scripture. In Genesis 6 we nd Godso disappointed in the direction humankind has been taking thatGod is contemplating the destruction of the entire earth. So theLord said, “I will wipe out humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the ground, from humankind to livestock, crawling things and the ying creatures of the sky, because I regret that I made them.” (Genesis 6:7)e regret of God weighs heavily on the reader until the moment of relief in the following verse: “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” Noah means “rest” and not only is this verse a rest forthe reader, Noah will also be looking for a dry place for the dove to rest once the ood waters nally subside.

The dove came in to him in the evening, and there in her mouth was a freshly

plucked olive leaf, so Noah knew that the water had cleared from the earth.

He waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, and she didn’t return

to him any more. Genesis 8:11, 12
