6. What do you mean you wanna play football? Figure skating's not good enough for you, son?

5. Your Mother and I are going away for the weekend. You might want to consider throwing a party.

4. Well, I don't know what's wrong with your car. Probably one of those doo-hickey thingies—ya know—that makes it run or something. Just have it towed to a mechanic and pay whatever he asks.

3. No son of mine is going to live under this roofwithout an earring. Now quit your belly-aching, and let’s go to the mall.

When my daughter was three, we watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the first time. The wicked queen appeared, disguised as an old lady

selling apples, and my daughter was spellbound. The Snow White took a bite of the poisoned apple and fell to the ground unconscious. As the apple rolled away, my daughter spoke up. “See Mom. She doesn’t like

4-H speech by Kevin Jones, 12, of Sedgewick, AB.

HOW THE TEACHERS’ STRIKE AFFECTED MY LIFE

Because of the teachers’ strike I had lots of time,So I put my 4-H speech to this little rhyme.

I thought of the ski hill, the gym, and the pool,This whole teachers’ strike just sounded so cool.

But my vision of playing and goofing around, And sleeping in late soon came crashing down.

Although I was planning some parties and fun,My father was needing a slave, not a son!

He seemed so happy this strike had evolved,The problem of cleaning his bams was now solved.

For calving in winter is a terrible event,The soul gets exhausted, the body gets spent.

So he gave me more chores and said with a smile,“I sure hope this strike lasts for a while.”

With a frown on my face I headed outdoors,And soon started doing my huge list of chores.

The first thing we do is the cows must be checked, And then fix the fence that the old bull had wrecked.

One of the cows was having trouble, well I couldn’t rhyme that but she was really having trouble!

We grabbed the calf-puller and also the chains,We tried to pull gently between labour pains.

This is not like school where you get a recess,For we keep on pulling till we get success.

The calf needs help because of rejection,The cow needs pills to help fight infection.

The calves got their shots and ear tags, too,The heifers got pink ones, the bulls they wear blue.

We worked without dinner from 7 till 4,My muscles are aching; my back was so sore.

Oh how I long to do social and science,But the teachers still strike in utter defiance.

I’m not here to murmur, whimper or whine,But give them more money, oh please Mr. Klein.

Right after dinner, we put out the feed, and then put oyiUredding that the little calves need.

Although I am tired and long for my bed,The bulls and heifers still haven’t been fed.

I wish the school system wasn’t in this big mess, Teachers, oh teachers, could you not take less?

We finally get done at almost 11,The supper tastes good, my bath is like heaven.

At last in my bed, I just started to dream,When I was awakened by this terrible scream.

“Kevin, come quickly, your help is needed.”By the tone of the voice I knew I should heed it.

We hop in the truck hell bent for election,Off to the vets for another C-section.

Now calving goes on day after day,There’s not much rest, and even less pay.

When it comes to the strike, I must confide,I don’t know the facts so I choose neither side.

I read in the paper the battle still rages,The board needs more time, the teachers need wages.

They both say the strike will do students no harm, But neither of them had to work on the farm.

To work this dam hard, one must be a fool,Which is just one more reason, I want back in school.

Despite what I say in this little ditty,I'd rather be farm boy than boy from the city.

But if teachers should strike again for some reason,I beg them, please don’t stike again during calving season.

Because I have a very good friend, Donna Clark, with ALS, I am collecting pledges in honour of Donna and the late Johnnie Stumpf.

Anyone wishing to donate to this cause please make cheque payable to Betty’s Run for ALS by June 7 and send to:

Marilyn Posein, R.R. #1, Milo, Alberta TOL 1L0Thanks for your support.

X & z-tty 'js JR U m . fW * -A JU S

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease) is a rapidly progressive, fatal, neuromuscular disease with no known cause, prevention or cure. Complete immobility and death often occur within two to three years after diagnosis. ALS is not a rare disease. In fact, ALS affects 7 out of every 100,000 people in Canada and 2-3 Canadians die every day from ALS!

Betty Norman was a very active 58-year-old Calgary woman who was diagnosed with ALS in August of 1996. Her courage and determination to make a difference inspired the 1997 "This One's for Betty" walk/run. Sadly, Betty passed away at her home in July1997, less than one year from diagnosis, and two weeks following the fundraising run that she inspired.

Now in its 6th Year, Betty's Run for ALS has raised over $625,000 to fight this dreadful disease, thanks to the participation and generosity of caring people, just like you. Money raised through donations not only benefits ALS research and awareness, blit also provides much-needed equipment and support to patients who are now facing its daily challenges. Since1998, the demand for the Society's services has more than tripled and we anticipate the communities' needs to continue to rise.

This year's run is dedicated to Betty's memory, to other loved ones who have been taken from us by this terrible disease, and to those people currently living with ALS. Through your support of Betty's Run there can be hope hope for today that there will be equipment and support services available for those suffering now ...and hope for tomorrow, that a cure for ALS will be found soon. By working together, a world without ALS can be a reality.

A i , SImagine. Muscle by muscle, nerve by nerve, your body shuts down. Your mind remains lucid and alert, as your body gradually dies. By the end of a given day, two to three Canadians will die of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis; more commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's disease",

Lou Gehrig, remembered as a star ball player with 493 home runs to his credit, succumbed to the disease at age 38 in 1941.

But Lou Gehrig isn't remembered only for his astounding feats as a ball player. The disease which claimed his life also took his name.

Lou Gehrig's disease, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, eventually fatal neuromuscular disease. ALS attacks nerve cells, especially those in the spinal cord, which control the voluntary muscles throughout the body. As these muscles fail to receive messages, they gradually weaken and die. Complete immobility and death often occur within two to three years after diagnosis.

ALS is not a rare disease. It is as common world wide as Multiple Sclerosis, and can strike anybody. About one in 50,000 will develop ALS in any given year. Although young people are affected, the disease occurs mostly within the 40 to 70 age groups.

Early symptoms include tripping and falling, loss of muscle control in the hands and arms, difficulty in speech, swallowing, breathing and chronic tiredness.

Few people with ALS are alive at any one time. Patients tend to grow weak rapidly, and families have all they can manage just to help their loved one function.

Therefore, patients and their families have little time to invest in public exposure. They often remain unseen and unheard; thereby not creating the level of interest and empathy generated by other illnesses.

Both competitive and recreational runners/walkers/ wheelchair athletes are invited to participate in our 6th annual event to create ALS awareness. Proceeds from "Betty's Run For ALS" will be dedicated to ALS awareness and raising funds for patient services, equipment and research.
